WELCOME TO ANOTHER VIBRANT AND EXCITING SEASON AT EDEN COURT. We’ve got a great line up of new and classic drama, a huge mix of live music to choose from, festivals, fabulous family events, dynamic dance and enough comedy to keep you smiling all summer long! Firstly though, I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our new brochure sponsors, Hawco. Previously Hawco have supported the Eden Court panto and now we’re delighted to have them on board as our brochure sponsors.
This brochure you are reading is by far the most effective way we have of letting you know what’s on at Eden Court from season to season. We produce 35,000 of these brochures each new season and we post 24,000 to everyone who has asked to receive one or who has bought a ticket to see something in the past year and asked to be on our mailing list. The remainder of the brochures are available to collect from the building and are distributed to hotels, tourist information offices and businesses throughout the Highlands. This whole process is costly, but invaluable, and we are hugely grateful to the support from Hawco which allows us to continue to provide this service. I think we’ve put together another terrific programme of events and, as always, I’m confident that there really is something for everyone. My personal highlight of the season is Dunsinane, a collaborative production between the National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Shakespeare Company. This is playwright David Grieg’s sequel to Macbeth and the hugely talented cast includes Jonny Phillips and Siobhan Redmond. It toured in 2011 and was going to come to Eden Court but the
RSC wanted an extra week. We’re not missing out this time as the previews and opening week will happen here at Eden Court before going on tour. At the other end of the entertainment spectrum we have the Happyness Comedy Festival which is now in its second year. Brought to us by comedy connoiseurs Edinburgh’s Gilded Balloon, this year’s festival has even more going on than last year and I am confident it’s going to grow to become an event that brings the whole community together. There’s everything from TV favourites Dylan Moran, Allan Davies and Jenny Eclair to free family events from the excellent James Campbell and the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppets kids show. There’s just too much to mention here so the best thing to do is pick up a Happyness brochure from Eden Court or visit www.happy-ness.co.uk to find out more. There’s a whole summer of entertainment inside so I’ll delay you no further. Enjoy! Best Wishes

This blissfully funny show follows the incredible adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache, as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents and of course, devastatingly beautiful women. A wonderfully inventive and gripping comedy thriller featuring four fearless actors, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. WWW.LOVE39STEPS.COM

Directed by Roxana Silbert Macbeth is dead, long live the King. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, Siward, the commanding officer, is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards Macbeth’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his WWW.NATIONALTHEATRESCOTLAND.COM
own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. David Greig’s exhilarating play is a vision of one man’s attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war. David Greig is a multi awardwinning Scottish playwright whose play with music Midsummer was a hit of this year’s Edinburgh Festival. His work is regularly produced by the National Theatre of Scotland. His most recent production for the RSC was The American Pilot. The leading characters of Macbeth’s Queen, Gruach and the English General, Siward are played by Siobhan Redmond and Jonny Phillips.

Long Live The Little Knife is a dynamic, absurd and
Calum's Road has become the stuff of modern folklore. It is the
uplifting theatre piece about forgery, castration and blind drunkenness. Liz and Jim are small-time con-artists who need £250,000 to buy their way out of a turf war. Their mission is to be the greatest art forgers in the world. There’s only one problem. They can’t paint.
JOYCE MACMILLAN, THE SCOTSMAN

Calum MacLeod, having battled the inaction of authorities on Raasay for years, sets off alone with a pick, a shovel and a wheelbarrow to build a road that will connect up the island. He wants to turn the tide of neglect and indifference and keep his family - and community - together.
Originally developed with support from the Royal Shakespeare Company and performed at the British Museum, this fast-paced, provocative and boisterous caper finds the incongruous connections between verbatim theatre, free-market economics, the psychology of ‘truth’ and a castrated labradoodle in a classic Chanel clutch bag. A hilarious and harrowing tale where we meet Steve Jobs and Chinese workers toiling to make our beloved iPhones. Think you know everything about the revered brand? Think again.
I keep a tight list. Very detailed. I stick to it. Even more so since she died. But I'm having trouble... Set in Québec, The List is an award winning story of a woman struggling to adjust to rural life. Increasingly isolated, she keeps life in order through obsessive list making. As her marriage struggles she befriends Caroline. When Caroline requests a favour she adds it to her list. The difference between remembering to do it, and neglecting to take it seriously, becomes the difference between life and death.
The really magnificent thing is Maureen Beattie's mesmerising and thrillingly unforgiving performance as a woman who cannot forgive herself.

This emboldened, passionate production will make you question what you thought you knew about one of the world’s most worshipped brands. Mike Daisey’s one man show explores the legality and morality of electronic sweatshops in China, complete with armed guards, underage workers and the harrowing tales of the toxic effects of hexane in these factories.
O’Rourke’s performance is never less than perfectly pitched FEST The best original American play so far this year WASHINGTON POST
Supported by Creative Scotland
One of the most talked about pieces of theatre to come out of the USA in the last few years, this show has been a hot centre of controversy. After being broadcast and subsequently retracted from the popular radio programme This American Life, this is a tale that has clearly made its way under the skin of audiences and media alike. As a self confessed "worshipper at the church of Apple," playwright Daisey tugs at heart strings, and shows how one man's story might not be able to topple an empire, but it can certainly give it a righteous shove.

Scottish businessman Roger Hunt was sent to India in November 2008 to set up a new work project. Shortly after his arrival, he was caught up in a bloody terrorist attack which claimed the lives of many innocent people who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Programmed at the heart of Refugee Week Scotland (Some Other Mother is a story of loss and survival that explores the traumatising impact of the asylum system).
Be Silent or Be Killed is about choice, coincidence, consequence. It's about decision-making and intuition, hope and determination. It's about holding true to the maxim: never give up - never say die. For 40 hours, Roger concealed himself in his Mumbai hotel room, fighting for his life. He survived, just. This is his story.

It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. Votes are won and lost by one, fist fights erupt in the bars, and ill MPs are hauled in to cast their votes.
For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses.
James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed new play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments.
The Audience breaks this contract of silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. The Audience reunites writer Peter Morgan and Academy Awardwinning actress Helen Mirren following their collaboration on the critically-acclaimed movie sensation The Queen. Directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours)

Columba’s Iona THU 08 AUG 16.30
Performer, playwright and author, Matthew Zajac has turned his hugely successful stage play, The Tailor of Inverness into what is sure to be an equally successful novel. Based on the life story of Matthew’s father, this is a story of journeys and of how a boy who grew up on a farm in Galicia (Eastern Poland, now Western Ukraine) came to be a tailor in Inverness. His story is not straightforward but it is absolutely compelling.
Gary Mulgrew SAT 10 AUG 18.30 Gary Mulgrew was born in Glasgow in 1961. He joined NatWest in 1983 but his banking career came to an abrupt end in June 2002 when he was indicted by the US authorities - along with two colleagues known as the NatWest Three - for allegedly defrauding NatWest. After years of court battles he was eventually extradited to America. Two years of detention in Houston, Texas, were followed by two years in seven different prisons in the United States and England until his full release in 2010. Gary Mulgrew will be interviewed by Iain Macwhirter, the trenchant political columnist with The Herald whose articles are compulsory reading for everyone with an eye on Scotland’s fiery political scene and constitutional debate.
Roy Hattersley SAT 10 AUG 20.30
To celebrate the 1450th anniversary of Columba’s arrival on Iona, the Iona Cathedral Trust commissioned COLUMBA’S IONA: A New History, by Rosalind K Marshall, published in May 2013 by Sandstone Press.
In government, Roy Hattersley held many offices including Senior Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection. In opposition he served as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and Shadow Home Secretary.
The island’s history, and the book, will be discussed by a panel of experts chaired by Finlay MacDonald, former Moderator of the Church of Scotland and Chair of the Iona Cathedral Trust. Finlay will be joined by Jayne Scott, Raymond Young and Alastair McIntosh - all members of the Iona Community.
Roy is the author of twenty-four books, including three novels and several biographies. See him in person as he discusses his new book The Devonshires: The Story of a Family and Nation (Chatto and Windus, 2013). Roy Hattersley speaks as he writes, with knowledge, insight and most of all, humour.

After thirty years in the business she should vaguely know what she’s doing. Professional Grumpy Old Woman, writer and panto star; Eclair has been round the block that many times she’s lost count. She is also a Pilates Ninja and a disgrace in her own kitchen. Touring as a stand-up gives Eclair enormous pleasure. It also gives her dreadful varicose veins, but most importantly it gives her partner (St Geoff) a bit of a break. Help him keep her out of the house, by supporting this show!

CALUM’S STORY MAY Two years ago, Calum, a 15 year old boy on the autistic spectrum would not have been walking along the River Ness making his way to the theatre to attend an animation class. He wouldn’t have had the confidence, the trust or the opportunity.
Scottish Fields And Beyond By David & Christine Ewan
It was only when Calum took advantage of the creative opportunities offered by Eden Court that his confidence increased and his artistic passions were fuelled and developed.
Stalls Gallery
She now exhibits and sells her work across the north and from her own gallery in Tomintoul.
Eden Court CREATIVE is the Arts Education Department, the largest of any UK theatre. Calum attends one of the 60 classes which CREATIVE run each week here at Eden Court. Alongside the classes we have a team of 18 Drama, Dance, Digital Media and Additional Needs specialists who deliver workshops across the Highlands. Our team is unique in that they live within their communities and we believe this creates a special connection because every project is developed with the creative needs of the community in mind. For Calum, the film classes he has been attending for the last two years have served as an outlet for his huge creative talent. The support of Eden Court’s specialist tutors has allowed him to thrive, both artistically and personally. All our classes are designed to be accessible to all ages and abilities and we actively encourage participants with additional needs to attend mainstream classes. We feel this creates a more positive learning environment and allows people like Calum to be treated in the same way as everybody else. Eden Court’s Digital Media classes were a great starting point for Calum because the class sizes are kept small and this creates a calm, secure environment for the pupil and also allows the tutor to dedicate more time to each participant. The tutors are skilled in engaging with participants and encouraging and developing their individual talents. The fact the tutors were aware of, but didn’t make a point of, Calum’s autism allowed him to be challenged in a good way. He has been able to use the sessions to work on his school targets of expressing himself with words and gestures and judging expression. He has made friends with his fellow participants, and is now able to make his own way to classes, something unimaginable two years earlier.
................................................................................. Here at Eden Court we present a wide and varied programme of music, drama, dance, comedy, and film and offer a diverse range of arts education opportunities. Our work is supported through revenue funding from Creative Scotland and the Highland Council. In 2012 we saw over 100,000 attendances at our arts education events, across all ages and abilities. Eden Court CREATIVE’s work ranges from delivering drama sessions to supporting the curriculum in school, to creating an all-singing, all-dancing site specific performance for an audience of thousands. Whatever the work requested of us, it is always unique, inventive and creative, serving to enthuse and offer opportunities for the people of the Highlands like Calum to develop their artistic skills and to bring creativity into their lives.

A Company Chordelia and Scottish Opera co-production
This is one of the funniest, funkiest, most irresistibly infectious ballets I have ever had the delight to sit through.
Strict rules, extreme conditions and ferocious competition. The Dance Marathons of Depression-era America were the reality shows of their day. Attracting huge audiences, they could last for weeks, with competitors stopping for only 10 minutes each hour to change their clothes or sleep, and eating while they danced. 10 dancers, two actors and a six-piece jazz ensemble bring this drama to life to a soundtrack of songs from the 1930s, performed by soprano Nadine Livingston. Company Chordelia Artistic Director Kally Lloyd-Jones directs and Kennedy Aitchison leads the band.

Gilbert and Sullivan as it's meant to be - pure, uncomplicated fun, performed to the highest standards. This new co-production with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company - returning to the stage for the first time in over 10 years - brings the humour bang up to date with a Python-esque twinkle. A vibrant, stylish and hilarious romp through one of G&S's finest scores, this show has everything you could want from a great night out. A young man bound by an overactive sense of duty, a soft-hearted pirate king with a hopeless band of rogues at his side, a beautiful young girl, a very modern major-general and an ineffectual bevy of policemen...add a plot hinging on the technicalities of having a birthday on the 29th of February and we're just about there. What could possibly go wrong? Gilbert's high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan's score sees him at the top of his game, with the catchy tunes for which he is so well known. Conducted by G&S expert John Owen Edwards and directed by Martin Lloyd-Evans, the fantastic ensemble cast includes a horde of young, fresh talent as well as G&S stars Steven Page as The Pirate King and Richard Suart as the Major-General. Domingo Hindoyan Conductor Aleksei Kiseliov Cello BARBER Essay No.1, Op.12
In his bedroom, a child rebels against his mother's instructions. In a fit of anger he breaks everything on which he can lay his hands and then surveys the damage. Suddenly each broken toy, each vandalised piece of furniture and each maimed animal come to life to make it clear to him how selfish his behaviour has been.
“What a symphony that would make!” declared Antonín Dvořák when he saw the Niagara Falls. But he didn’t write a symphony: he wrote the most sweepingly romantic cello concerto of all time. RSNO Principal Cello Aleksei Kiseliov throws himself headlong into its torrents, while conductor Domingo Hindoyan and the Orchestra explore Aaron Copland’s dream of a pioneering America. His balletic score Appalachian Spring brings to life the ageold tale of the youthful aspiration and endless possibility of an ideal world.

Billy & Tim - The Story So Far... In 2007 Scott Kyle picked up a play in his local library and it changed his life forever. The play was Des Dillon's Singin' I’m No A Billy, He's A Tim and it propelled Scott and his company (NLP) into the limelight, becoming Scottish theatre's greatest success story of recent times. Since its first performance (in a pub in Glasgow) Billy & Tim has gone on to gross over £1,000 ,000 at box offices throughout the UK and Ireland. In 2010 Scott picked up The Stage Best Actor Award at the Edinburgh Festival for his portrayal of Billy in the show, and since then he hasn't looked back, having gone on to star in Ken Loach's BAFTAwinning movie The Angels Share. In this live talk Scott tells his real life ‘rags to riches’ story, revealing his formula for success and the struggles he faced making the show a success...including a phone call from Billy Connolly (that his mother will never forget), a drunken night out in Dublin with Kevin Bridges, and of course, tea with Susan Boyle. This is an open and honest account of this amazing and inspiring success story so far.

THE TIMES
When Mike Oldfield released his 1973 masterpiece, Tubular Bells, it required more than 30 musicians to perform it. Now, 40 years on, performed by just two massively talented musicians, this thrilling show recreates the album on stage, in real time in a unique and compelling theatrical experience. Tubular Bells for Two burst onto the international scene at the Sydney Festival and was the smash-hit show of the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe – winning a Herald Angel Award and garnering several five star reviews. Join us to witness this herculean feat as Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts recreate the beauty and playful lunacy of one of the most important albums of the 20th Century with just four hands and four feet.

The Blues Band was formed in 1979 by ex Manfred Mann group members Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, originally to play a few pub gigs. Slide guitar ace and vocalist Dave Kelly was recruited, Gary Fletcher filled the bass post. Rob Townsend of Family Fame replaced Hughie Flint in 1982 at the drums. This show features a brilliant selection from their new studio album Few Short Lines which is collecting rave reviews everywhere.
Familiar to many thousands of music fans as the front man in the Scottish rock band Idlewild, Roddy Woomble is also a celebrated solo songwriter & performer. Winning rave reviews across both rock and folk press for his solo debut in 2006 My Secret is My Silence, Roddy’s follow-up album The Impossible Song and Other Songs (2011) has been hailed by critics and fans alike. He was also a key instigator behind the acclaimed 2007 album Ballads of the Book, bringing together leading Scottish poets and musicians to collaborate on new songs. Roddy and his band have been touring the UK ever since the release of The Impossible Song and Other Songs, playing some notable dates including Beautiful Days and Wychwood Festival last summer. As well as songs from the new album, the live set will feature tunes from both solo albums alongside several Idlewild numbers.
