Captain Simon Fraser attempts to win fame by publishing his Highland music. In order to gain the favour of elitist Regency society he is compelled to remove the Gaelic verses, often of Jacobite and virulently anti-Royal sentiment, presenting his music instead as refined chamber pieces.

Voted the nation’s number one bedtime story by BBC Radio 2 listeners, The Gruffalo has been performed to well over a million people worldwide and has even hit the small screens in a star-studded TV animation. Songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged 3+ and their grown-ups.

Tam O’Shanter is a wild night out. Based on the famous poem, it also incorporates other Burns' material such as The Vision, The Cottar's Saturday Night, Halloween, and The Holy Fair and included in the choric romp is the libretto of The Jolly Beggars - the nearest he ever got to writing a piece overtly for the theatre. We see the tale of Tam O’Shanter - his drunken and glorious night out, his ride through the storm, the scene of supernatural debauchery inside Kirk Alloway, and the terrifying chase through the woods. With live music and a large cast of the best Scottish actors, dancers and musicians, this is an evening of outrageous hilarity, death-defying rhyming, anachronisms and short skirts.

Straight from the Edinburgh Fringe and building on the success of the acclaimed, Blackout, THICKSKIN and Davey Anderson have collaborated to create this larger than life coming-of-age story about desire, guilt, and mind over matter. An estimated 50,000 Scots – that is 1 in every 100 – live on the autism spectrum. People with autism can be seen as difficult, odd, challenging and obsessive by an uncomprehending world. They can feel isolated, avoided and even invisible. But it doesn’t have to be like this. The National Autistic Society, Inverness branch, hosts an inspirational evening with practical advice for professionals and people affected by autism and their families. Compered by MFR breakfast presenter Nicky Marr, four speakers with professional and personal experience of the condition bring vividly to life the challenges and rewards of living with autism.

TUESDAY 05 JUNE BRIAN TAYLOR - BBC Scotland Political Editor This academic year the University of Highlands & Islands special guest series will focus on issues in communication and social responsibility. The term social responsibility is widely used today. It refers to the ideology that an individual or organisation should behave in a way that is not detrimental to society but instead benefits it. For this series of events, the focus will be specifically exploring the perspectives of two individuals working in communication and how they feel about social responsibility.

When world-renowned Polar Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes turned his attentions from the great frozen wilderness of the Poles to the world's highest and most testing mountains, he faced several challenges. For a start he was just entering his sixties, was recovering from a very severe heart attack, had no climbing experience and suffered from vertigo. Sir Ranulph will be interviewed by acclaimed high altitude mountaineer and photographer/ cameraman Ian Parnell, who accompanied him on his expeditions to The Eiger and Mount Everest. Ian will illustrate the show with both footage and stills, some televised and some unseen, from these incredible voyages. Don’t miss the inspirational story of how Sir Ranulph conquered his fears, stood on top of the world, AND raised well over a million pounds for Marie Curie.

The story of Bonnie Prince Charlie's adventures after the disastrous defeat at Culloden is dramatic, heroic and really quite outlandish. For several months he was ruthlessly pursued through the Highlands and Islands of Scotland by the Hanoverian redcoats but against almost impossible odds, made his escape to France. Jimmie Macgregor was offered the chance to make a TV series which began on Culloden battlefield as he followed in the Prince's footsteps through the rugged Highland landscape. The result is one of the most dramatic of his illustrated talks, delivered in Jimmie's characteristically informal style.

Acclaimed Czech conductor, Jakub Hrusa, makes his SCO debut with an evening in the key of D! Mozart’s turbulent concerto, performed by the brilliant young pianist Jonathan Biss, touches on veins of dark drama and poignant song. For Dvorák, drawing deep on his national folk heritage of dances and romances, there is lyrical warmth and charm to be found. And for Beethoven, D is the key of humour and grand brassy gestures even though the complexity of this symphony dumbfounded many of his contemporaries. DVORAK Czech Suite BEETHOVEN Symphony No 2

A perfect concert for a summer’s evening: the SCO and the wonderful Dutch director / violinist, Isabelle van Keulen, perform some of classical music’s most popular works. Prokofiev nurtured a secret hope that his symphony would turn out to be a classic and, of course, it has. It’s followed here by Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Concerto, performed by the SCO’s Maximiliano Martín, and Beethoven’s First Symphony.

The Parson’s Pirates

REVIVAL OF THE 1980 PRODUCTION

SUN 17 JUN 19.30 EMPIRE THEATRE

Anthony Besch’s celebrated production has travelled to opera houses around the world since it was first created for Scottish Opera in 1980. Masterfully conceived by a consummate storyteller, Besch’s much-loved production transports Puccini's powerful drama to Fascist Italy in the 1930s, a setting entirely in tune with the dark intensity of this passionate tale. Floria Tosca, a famous diva, is engaged to Mario Cavaradossi. But Scarpia, the sadistic Chief of Police, is infatuated with her and plans to kill her lover and take her for himself. As Scarpia’s schemes unfold, Tosca and Cavaradossi are drawn into a devastating chain of events that has little chance of ending well. Puccini’s music, at times heartbreakingly tender, at times powerful and harrowing, captures the sweeping span of this epic story - from the exquisite stillness of a silent dawn in Rome, to the raw drama of Tosca’s final, desperate plight. Susannah Glanville, star of Opera North’s 2009 production, returns to the role of Tosca and English baritone Robert Poulton is Scarpia. Spanish tenor José Ferrero makes his Scottish Opera debut as Cavaradossi. WWW.SCOTTISHOPERA.ORG.UK

The Parson’s Pirates remains one of the key items in the Opera Della Luna repertoire. The action is set in the parish hall of St Michael’s Under Ware, where the vicar, the Reverend Arthur Bender, is putting on a production of The Pirates of Penzance to raise money for church funds. His cast consists of the two church-wardens, Mr Prickett and Mr Prendergast; Tracy, a punkish girl who does amazing things with chewing gum; an un-named local youth who is recruited to play Frederic; and Mrs Goodbody, a lady who is into alternative spirituality and dabbles in Tarot cards and tantric therapies.

One of the hardest-working bands on the US roots music circuit, Hillfolk Noir have built themselves a huge Stateside following playing what has been described as music “filtered through a countrytinged, swampy-swingin’, hillbilly-delta-bluesragtime word machine”.

Inspired by a half-century of folk, country and rock ‘n’ roll, the band’s last album, Skinny Mammy’s Revenge, was met with widespread acclaim. On its UK release, the album established the band as a force to be reckoned with on this side of the Atlantic too, Americana UK writer Paul Kerr telling readers it was “a delight”. This will be the band’s much-anticipated first UK tour so be sure you’re among the first to see them in action.

Most great guitarists would be grateful to create a legacy of classic recordings, stand-out performances and blistering technique, but Preston Reed has gone much further by inventing an entirely new way of playing the guitar. His influence is crucial for a new generation of guitarists including Andy McKee, Newton Faulkner and Kaki King, who play in the style developed by Reed back in the mid-1980s. Fusing chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion with his breathtaking two-handed style, Reed creates a unique sonic landscape that is almost as breathtaking to watch as it is to hear.
