DON’T MISS Points Wonderland. In 2011 we embarked on our most ambitious programme to date when we produced our very own version of Para Handy which played to critical acclaim at Eden Court before a touring successfully to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

ormally I use this brochure welcome to tell you about a few of my favourite shows from the coming season. This time I’m going to focus on one show that recalls some of Eden Court’s past but which I hope is also the beginning of a future direction for us. We have always strived to do more than just present brilliant shows at Eden Court. In the late 1980s we produced a number of small scale shows and toured them across the Highlands. We then did something similar when our building was closed for redevelopment in 2006 and 2007 and we presented shows in a number of venues and communities. Since reopening in 2007 we have helped companies with their productions by giving them space to make work in. We have done this for both dance and drama companies working at large and small scale. In 2012 this led to our first ever mention in Critics Award as a co-producer of Vanishing
In the next few years we hope to develop all these ideas. We are currently working with Highland based companies Right Lines Productions and Dogstar Theatre Company to produce shows that will start at Eden Court, then tour Scotland. But the first of our new projects to see the light of day is a brilliant co-production with Dundee Rep Ensemble of Promises, Promises (page 33). If you were one of the thousands of people who came to Eden Court and enjoyed the unforgettable Sunshine on Leith or their brilliant productions of Cabaret or All My Sons then not only do you know the quality of the work that Dundee Rep produce but you’ll also remember the presence and performances of one of Scotland’s finest talents, Anne Louise Ross. Anne Louise actually grew up here in Inverness, went to Crown Primary and the Inverness Royal Academy and then spent most of her summers in
Ardgay, Ross-shire, where her granny lived! – so by my reckoning, not only do we get to admire her talent but we also get to lay claim to it...well, a little. This co-production of Promises Promises by Douglas Maxwell is an incredibly powerful play about a school teacher slowly losing control of a difficult situation. It will tour to communities around Dundee before coming to Eden Court on the 11th and 12th November but we’re also touring it all over the Highlands. We’ll let you know via local press and via our facebook, twitter and weekly what’s on (you can sign up for our free weekly what’s on via the Eden Court website homepage) when we have dates and venues confirmed. Or course the rest of the brochure is full of fantastic shows which I hope you enjoy reading about but I thought you’d like to know about our new venture into Highland touring and I hope to see you here at Eden Court or at one of the tour venues for Promises Promises over the coming months Best Wishes Colin Marr Chief Executive – Eden Court

Sassy and feisty, Davina could be described as the Memphis Minnie of today, except she doesn’t play guitar – instead she plays piano in a gin-house style! Her music is based in New Orleans incorporating elements of blues, swing, jazz, R&B, soul and gospel – and in the Vagabonds she has a band that have the talent and attitude to reflect her idiosyncratic style. Vivaldi a Tale of Two Seasons Vivaldi's career from the mid-1710s became more and more focused on his theatrical endeavours. As well as composing operas, he played specially written entr'acte concertos and often acted as impresario. His galante style of the 1730s provides a sharp contrast to his simpler, more direct approach of the 1710s. If ever there was proof that he didn't write one concerto 400 times, this evening’s repertoire is it!

Seductive, audacious, he lives life from one opportunity to the next. But will he eventually take things too far? Director Sir Thomas Allen, designer Simon Higlett and lighting designer Mark Jonathan (The Magic Flute 2012) bring their hallmark theatricality to Mozart’s extraordinary score.
Dark, vivid, bursting with life, Don Giovanni is full-blooded opera at its best, combining exquisite music, powerful orchestration, intense drama and lightly crafted comedy. Jacques Imbrailo, hailed by The Times as ‘the hottest young baritone on the block’ is Don Giovanni and beloved Scottish soprano Lisa Milne is Donna Elvira. LA SERENISSIMA
Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
17th-century Venice – a city of darkness and shadows, where danger lurks in every alleyway and corruption is rife. In the centre of it all, a man in his element: Don Giovanni.
Touring 16 of Scotland’s smaller venues in Autumn 2013, Rodelinda is accompanied by three instrumentalists – on harpsichord, violin and cello – giving a strong flavour of the orchestra that Handel originally wrote for. The sensuous score is full of fragility, beauty and darkness, contrasting moments of frantic energy with those of exquisite stillness, reflecting the human passions at its core.

MichaL Nesterowicz Conductor Brahm’s First Symphony is occasionally dubbed Beethoven’s Tenth, but this is no mere homage. His masterwork builds beyond the legacy of his predecessor, delivering an abundance of melody and intense harmony, leaving no one in any doubt that this is now the Romantic era. Prior to the maincourse, conductor MichaL Nesterowicz serves up their tasty morsels from the world of opera: Massenet’s passionate and endearing Médiation, this time as an interlude between two rousing Wagnerian openers from Die Meistersinger and Tannhäuser.

Respighi's beautiful suite The Birds, with its skilful arrangements of music from the 16th and 17th centuries, complements the Concerto for double string orchestra that Tippett wrote in 1939. Widely regarded as one of the composer's most popular works it is heavily influenced by folk-song, the music of Purcell and 17th century English madrigals. Andrew Manze brings his own arrangement of an enchanting work by William Lawes, once described by Charles I as the 'father of musik', and the evening comes to a lively close with Mozart's great E flat symphony.

Originally developed with support from the Royal Shakespeare Company and performed at the British Museum, this fast-paced, provocative and boisterous caper finds the incongruous connections between verbatim theatre, free-market economics, the psychology of ‘truth’ and a castrated labradoodle in a classic Chanel clutch bag.

Following the hit sell-out production of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, Townsend Productions presents this new drama set in 1834 about the Tolpuddle Martyrs. This is the extraordinary true story of George and Betsy Loveless. He was a Methodist preacher and the leader of the six farm labourers who were tried, convicted and condemned to
harsh transportation for speaking out against wage cuts. This vitally important story is told through Andy Vine's powerful political cartoons and animation, puppetry and the exquisite musical arrangements by revered folk singer and squeezebox player John Kirkpatrick.

In 1948, at the age of 62, Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), writer of Out of Africa, met the 29 year old young poet, Thorkild Bjørnvig,. He was newly married and had recently made his successful publishing debut. The two shared a powerful, dangerous and intimate friendship, their pact, which lasted six years before falling apart. The Baroness is Thor Bjorn Krebs's provocative, free interpretation of the relationship between Blixen and Bjornvig, a relationship which is both platonic and sexually charged, and which questions and challenges the role and nature of the artist. Full of tension and poetry, with three tremendous acting roles, the play is inspired by anecdotes, letters and books by and about both Blixen and Bjørnvig. Starring ROBERTA TAYLOR - one of Britain's most talented and respected actresses. A prominent member of the great Glasgow Citizens Theatre Company of the 1970s and '80s, she became a household name as Irene Raymond in the BBC soap Eastenders and until recently starred as Gina Gold in ITV's The Bill.

Tommy can’t sleep. He hasn’t been able to since his mum died a year ago. Since then, life has gone from bad to worse. His dad is griefstricken, his big sister ignores him and he’s become the target for the school bully. Then one restless night, Tommy goes to the window, throws back the curtain and… …a dragon is looking at him. Straight in the eye.
Terrifying and destructive, but powerfully intoxicating, the dragon burns with the anger and hurt that Tommy feels and makes anything seem possible. They go everywhere together as if connected by invisible thread and suddenly life is much better again. But mysterious fires have started igniting across Glasgow’s Garnethill. Whilst there he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was subsequently incarcerated for 50 years at Craig Dunain hospital in Inverness, for 43 of those years Angus was on no medication. In 1990 before skittering to a quiet demise Glaswegian seminal agit-folknoir duo The Telltales had a minor hit in the UK. In Japan it went to number 1 for six weeks. Twenty one years later they return, older - not wiser, to Tokyo to perform at a live TV awards ceremony, with extra baggage! The inevitable excruciating post-mortem ensues-with songs. Time shifts through the verse, chorus and middle 8 of their lives and careers. These visionaries did not change their artistic style or direction simply for material gain. The Telltales through obscurity maintained credibility. Miranda Dixon - The Cognitive Content Show (BBC9)

Lifeboat is the extraordinary true story of Bess Walder and Beth Cummings. It is a story of courage, a story of survival, a story of enduring friendship. On Friday 13 September 1940, a ship, The City of Benares, set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Only eleven of the evacuees survived. Two fifteen year old girls, Bess Walder and Beth Cumming, spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. They willed each other to survive. Now, over sixty years later, they remain firm friends... this is their extraordinary true story. WWW.CATHERINEWHEELS.CO.UK

Glynis Henderson Productions present Action To The Word's production of Anthony Burgess's A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
By Anthony Burgess
Glyndebourne Opera
Directed by Alexandra Spencer-Jones
Sat 24 Aug
BILLY BUDD NT Live
The breathtaking all-male version of A Clockwork Orange comes to Inverness following its successful season in London's Soho Theatre, three-month tour of Australia and its five-star, sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This electrifying and testosterone-filled, physical theatre horror show exquisitely captures and transcends the spirit of Anthony Burgess' original literary masterpiece, 50 years on from its publication.

We love bringing you live opera and drama through live cinema screenings and we also love bringing you the same, live on our own stages. In August the National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Shakespeare Company are here at Eden Court with David Grieg’s stunning sequel to Macbeth, Dunsinane (24 & 27 – 31 Aug). Starring Siobhan Redmond, this acclaimed drama begins its tour here in Inverness before embarking on a UK tour. We also have The List (Best Production 2013 Critics award), and Promises Promises staring Anne
Louise Ross (an Eden Court and Dundee Rep production). In terms of Opera we have the incredible Scottish Opera here in November with another stunning production, Don Giovanni. Given their track record of sell out performances here at Eden Court, you’d be well advised to book quickly. We’ve got lots more Drama and Opera to choose from, just have a look at the relevant sections here in your brochure

A Clockwork Orange lures its audience into the glorious glassedged nastiness of Manchester's underworld. A playtime of orgiastic ultra violence and sexuality, it is the story of Alex and his Droogs in their battle against the tedium of adolescence. An unapologetic jubilation of the human condition, it remains as terrifyingly relevant today as when the book was published in 1962 and when the Stanley Kubrick film caused a stir in 1971. Peter Cairns, internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer and writer, presents this spectacular AV show combining still imagery, video and music. UNIVERSITY OF THE HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES
If modern British adventure has a face, it looks a lot like Leo Houlding. A climbing prodigy who started by scaling the Old Man of Hoy at just ten years old, 31-year-old Leo has climbed the most difficult and highest mountains in the world. In search of ever greater adventure, 2012 took Leo to the
wildest, least accessible and most contrasting corners of Earth - deep into the Amazon jungle and to the centre of the Antarctic wilderness. Cerro Autana is a sacred mountain deep in the Venezuelan jungle. Just to reach the mountain, Leo faced deadly snakes, searing heat, swarms of insects and a terrifying encounter with a shamans blow pipe - a tale Indiana Jones would be proud of. I was born in Thurso and have lived here my whole life. I found drama at a young age and joined the local drama group, the Thurso Players a week before my 7th birthday (You had to be 7 to join). It was brilliant. Like most kids I had an array of ambitions. At first I wanted to be a princess, then a ninja, then a Pokémon master, then a vet, then a waitress and now, an actress.
I am now in sixth year and wanting to go to University to study acting at the end of the year. Then after I graduate, I can literally get paid for doing what I love!

Thank you to the Eden Court Creative team for supporting Miffy throughout the year. As parents we loved that she was doing a course she enjoyed so much. The fact that she was financially supported was absolutely brilliant because there would have been no way she could have done the course otherwise. In the past year we have noticed a great change in our daughter, she’s matured and become an independent young woman. Through her time at Eden Court she’s made lots of new friends and the tutors were a great support to her. Thanks once again.
Miffy’s case study is a brilliant example of the work of Eden Court CREATIVE and how we can help anyone develop their theatre arts skills anywhere in the Highlands . Whatever it is you want to do just get in touch with us at creative@eden-court.co.uk to see how we can help you achieve your ambitions.

When David Hunter (the Eden Court CREATIVE Drama worker in Caithness) started holding workshops at the school, I just had to get involved. Through David and Eden Court I’ve had some fantastic opportunities. Last year we performed The Tempest at the Shakespeare School Festival and then I did my first musical, Honk and I had one of the lead roles. The highlight so far is being picked from thousands of young Scottish applicants to be a member of RE:LOCATION 2012 Through this I had the opportunity to be a headliner at NFYT (National Festival of Youth Theatre). I mean, I never thought I would see the day where I could be part of anything that could be called a headlining act! And of course getting the once in a lifetime chance to go to Norway and represent Scotland in RE:LOCATION International Youth Project was amazing! Even after RE:LOCATION I’m still getting amazing chances to do things. This year the High School Drama club were given the incredible chance to perform in the National Theatre Connections Festival at Eden Court with The Guffin and I took the lead role. On top of all this I am really enjoying my time as an Eden Court CREATIVE Ambassador– it’s given me so many opportunities. I’ve met cast members from touring companies and I’m picking up tips and learning more and more about backstage and management. Another amazing opportunity I was given through my time at Eden Court was doing my SQA Higher Drama course. This is a very big deal as Thurso High School no longer has a Drama teacher so we can’t sit these exams in school. I auditioned and got a place, which was amazing! I thought with my lack of previous studies it might not happen but it did. I have learned so much to do with the theory of drama and I got to perform at Eden Court again, which is always a delight. I have a lot to thank Eden Court for.
