welcome
...TO YOUR NEW ‘EDEN COURT CREATIVE’ BROCHURE!
Eden Court is the hub for the arts in the Highlands, and we want you to get involved. With more than 60 classes taking place every week, Eden Court CREATIVE offers the largest arts education programme of any UK theatre. All day, every day, throughout Eden Court and right across the Highlands–there’s something going on for you regardless of your age or ability. This term we’ve got our great regular classes for babies, toddlers and parents including Bouncin’ Beans (p6) and Mini Movers (p5) as well as our fantastic new class for 1-4 yr olds Rú-Rá (p5) which introduces young children (and parents!) to Gaelic through gentle songs and rhymes. We’re continuing with last term’s new dance classes for adults, such as funky Breakin’ Classes and Cuban Salsa (p12) for those who want to spice things up! DramaLab now has an increased capacity on Tuesdays, and we’re very excited to start The Hub (p16)–a weekly club designed for young people on the autistic spectrum, led by Hayley Savage. As well as our usual schedule, we’re running lots of new projects for all ages. Hit Squad is a brilliant new scheme for community groups to learn a piece of choreography and take it somewhere unusual to teach it to another group: your high school dance group could teach it to a care home, or get your workmates to teach a dance to your children’s nursery! And don’t forget to check out our Winter Performances (p22)! Following on from last year’s sell-out Under 5’s show ‘Ding Dong’, we’re bringing you the beautiful sensory story of‘Little Blue’, the tiny penguin who just can’t stand the cold–can his friends help him keep warm? Adults haven’t been forgotten about either–for those who tire quickly of panto glitz, our stage version of‘Fawlty Towers: Gourmet Night’ is guaranteed to provide you with some post-watershed indulgence! So - whoever you are and whatever you’re interested in, taking part in drama, dance and physical activities is good for you and full of fun. We’re always looking for ways to make your Eden Court CREATIVE brochure work better for you, so if you have any suggestions just give us a call! Come on–get Creative!
Kati Kozikowska, Eden Court Creative Manager “As the Ambassador for Eden Court CREATIVE, I am hugely proud to be part of something that provides so many great opportunities for studying theatre, dance and film-making in the Highlands. I did a lot of my initial training at Eden Court, including my Higher Drama and my LAMDA (London Academy of Dramatic Arts) certification. The tutors were always there to support me. I had my first real experience of acting via Eden Court CREATIVE and it was their knowledge and experience that encouraged me to take the next step and pursue a career in the arts. Eden Court CREATIVE is a great resource for everyone in the Highlands both young and old. If you haven’t tried it yet, start participating and get Creative–you never know where it might lead.” EDEN COURT CREATIVE’S AMBASSADOR AND FORMER STUDENT, KAREN GILLAN All photography of class participants and staff: Ewen Wetherspoon www.ewphoto.co.uk

meet the creative team Graeme Roger Digital Artist Graeme has been with us since the theatre’s re-opening in 2007 and guides our Filmmaking and Digital Animation course, as well as working on media for our large scale projects like the Ness Islands Halloween Spectacular and Eden Court and Open Books’ collaborative production of Para Handy. Graeme also directed and produced our short film shown as part of the Dalai Lama’s presentation at Eden Court in June 2012. What do you like most about your job? I really enjoy collaborating with other artists, performers and musicians. The variety of projects that come my way is what makes the job worth doing, and being part of a large team means you can share in the satisfaction of a job well done! Doing video design for our theatre shows and recently for the Dalai Lama's visit are great things to be a part of. What’s the most challenging part of your job? Coming up with fresh ideas is an accepted challenge of a job like this, but again this can be seen as a positive; otherwise I would get bored re-doing the same thing! Are there any special events or filmmaking activities that you’re looking forward to? The film screenings that we create at the end of each term are always ace - it’s where you can stand back and see the film-making that has been done by a variety of classes. For folks to see their own short films on the big screen at Eden Court is something that everyone gets a real buzz from. CREATIVE’s involvement at Belladrum Festival is always good fun as well: running stop-motion animation sessions inside a large tent in your wellies wasn't in the original job description though... and the Halloween Spectacular on Ness Islands is also ace to be a part of, as the film-making classes create content on a given theme that is projected as part of the event. Again, it’s always good to have the work we make get seen by the wider public. page 11

GET SCOTLAND DANCING 2012 is the Year of Creative Scotland, and Eden Court is the Highland partner for Creative Scotland’s ‘Get Scotland Dancing’ Initiative. Get Scotland Dancing aims to encourage more people to get active and participate in dance. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games provide an unparalleled opportunity to raise the profile of dance as a creative, participative and physical artform across a four year period, creating an inclusive celebration of dance across Scotland, linking into the wider UK and marking Scotland’s place in the world. Working with Scotland’s key dance organisations, Get Scotland Dancing will bring together professional and amateur dancers of all ages to dance in public spaces in towns, villages and cities –bringing dance to the people and people to dance. It is hoped this will strengthen opportunities to participate in dance and create a lasting legacy for communities throughout Scotland. For more information and to see how you could get involved contact Eden Court Creative’s Dance Artist Louise Marshall on lmarshall@eden-court.co.uk
Creative Identities Eden Court Creative is a Highland partner for Creative Identities’ Dance and Film projects. Reinvesting the proceeds of crime back into communities to benefit Scotland’s young people, Creative Scotland’s Creative Identities programme is a strand of the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities scheme. Over the coming year, we will be running dance and film workshops alongside Action for Children’s street football pitch throughout the Highlands. Be sure to look out for music video/dance and film projects at Youth Clubs In Your Area too. There is also a programme of activities with local partner organisations at our Eden Court Studios, with a screening of some of our Creative Identities work on THU 06 DEC at the Eden Court Cinema! Big Dance Events BIG DANCE, BIG FUN! Eden Court CREATIVE has been having great fun over the summer so far with our events celebrating Big Dance 2012. We helped teach a piece of choreography to school groups all across the Highlands, which they performed at 13:00 on Friday 18 May along with thousands of other children across the UK in an attempt to break the ‘Largest Dance Routine-Multi Venue’ World Record. We also brought the sizzle of South America to the Highlands with our Salsa Street Parties in Inverness, Aviemore and Portree in July. These were fantastic evenings of Salsa, Cha-Cha and funky street dance, with everyone from babies to grandparents (and even pets!) joining in. Our Big Screen Big Dance Week also went down a storm, as Eden Court ramped up the silver screen glitz and glam to teach participants the best moves from the movies! This was accompanied by classic dance–based movies showing at the Eden Court Cinema, making it a week to remember!
STILL TO COME... HIT SQUAD This innovative project aims to create links within communities and bring dance performances into unorthodox venues. We commissioned an accessible, adaptable piece of choreography which can be learnt by one community group to be performed to another e.g. a primary school group performing to elderly members of the community in a care home. ‘Hit Squad’ is part of the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland’s ‘Get Scotland Dancing’ policy and aims to bring dance to people living in rural areas of the Highlands who find it difficult to access regular weekly classes or public events.
YOUTH CLUB MUSIC VIDEOS Look out for music video opportunities happening at Highland Youth Clubs....come and try film-making & Street Dance and then see the finished film either In Your Area or at the Eden Court Cinema! Following the sell out success of‘Will It Snow?’, ‘Ding Dong’ and ‘Around the World in a Rocket’ Eden Court CREATIVE are pleased to present ‘Little Blue’, a beautiful, interactive show for under 5’s and their families. So P,P,P... pick up a ticket and come and join the fun!

With their alternative and risqué winter performances for adults, Eden Court CREATIVE never fail to dampen the Panto mood every Christmas–perfect for all you Scrooges out there! In this rip-roaring stage version of the hilarious TV comedy, Basil and Sybil decide to bring haute cuisine to the hotel dining room...a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Warning: No riff-raff! page 22
