Welcome to our new season at Eden Court This coming season boasts a huge variety of entertainment and, as ever, we have tried to make sure there is something for everyone. I’m really excited to have the National Theatre of Scotland here with the acclaimed James Plays. At the other end of the spectrum we have three absolutely brilliant musicals on offer with Hairspray, Jackie The Musical and the return of a personal favourite, the irreverently hilarious yet utterly heartfelt, Avenue Q. In between you can expect Scottish Ballet to delight with Cinderella and Swan Lake plus we have RSNO with their much loved Viennese Night as well as the best of every other kind of music you can imagine. All this plus comedy, family shows, talks and special events. Sit back, enjoy the brochure and see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!

By Rona Munro Directed by Laurie Sansom

James I, James II and James III are a modern cycle of history plays by award-winning playwright Rona Munro. This vividly-imagined trilogy brings to life three generations of Stewart Kings who ruled Scotland in the tumultuous fifteenth century and represents an unprecedented co-production by the National Theatre of Scotland, the National Theatre of Great Britain and the Edinburgh International Festival. When The James Plays premiered in Autumn 2014, the critical and public impact was extraordinary. Described by The Telegraph as better than Shakespeare, The James Plays sold out their run at the Edinburgh International Festival and the National Theatre of Great Britain in London, causing a storm of attention and thrilling audiences. Each play stands alone as a unique vision of a country tussling with its past and future; viewed together they create a complex and compelling narrative on Scottish culture and nationhood. An ensemble of 20 actors takes the audience through a rarely-explored period of history with playful wit and boisterous theatricality.

Bold and irreverent storytelling explores the complex character of this colourful Stewart king – a poet, a lover, a law-maker but also the product of a harsh political system.

Prisoner of England for 18 years, James is delivered back to his homeland, with an English bride, to reign as James I of Scotland. Returning to a troubled nation, he faces terrible choices if he is to save himself, his Queen and the crown.

James II: Day of the Innocents In the second play of Rona Munro’s thrilling trilogy, innocent games merge with murderous intent in a violent royal playground of shifting realities and paranoia.

Crowned King at age six, James II is a puppet in a vicious game between Scotland’s most powerful families. As he approaches adulthood, James must fight for his crown while the nightmares of his childhood torment him.

James III: The True Mirror Like James III himself, the final instalment of Rona Munro’s extraordinary trilogy is colourful, brash and unpredictable. It turns its eye on the women of the royal court, both lowly and high born, who prove to be its beating heart.

Charismatic, cultured, and obsessed with grand gestures, James III is loved and loathed by his nation. Scotland’s future may lie with his resourceful and resilient wife, Margaret of Denmark. Can she rescue a struggling nation?

Edinburgh; a cold town on the edge of civilisation, in very much the Year of Our Lord, 1696. The church has spies everywhere. The Destroyed Room

A rich vein of black humour is exploded in this account of the last person in Britain to be executed for blasphemy. Using Told by an Idiot’s internationally celebrated theatrical invention, we glimpse into Edinburgh’s dark past to reveal this true story with universal resonance. A collaboration between award-winning poet Simon Armitage, Told by an Idiot, National Theatre Scotland and Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh. WWW.NATIONALTHEATRESCOTLAND.COM

Cross-cultural sparks fly and preconceptions about Muslim women, sex and politics are hilariously and hauntingly shattered in the show The Wall Street Journal says breaks down stereotypes of Muslim women in America and that reviewers worldwide call a must-see production. Having travelled from the U.S to the West End, through Pakistan and to the Edinburgh Festival and beyond, this incredibly important play is an infectiously entertaining mosaic of the sublime, the comic, the poetic and the political that transcends boundaries of culture, religion and gender. Audiences find themselves moved and entertained by its unique and universal appeal.

…gives a human face to those who choose to wear the hijab and those who don’t. THE SCOTSMAN

It begins with what seems to be the recording of a debate, as guests gather to digest world events. They sit among potted plants and standard lamps, discussing the things they have witnessed and debating the ethics of watching. Around them, cameras film their every word and every reaction, beaming them live onto a big screen. But as the debate intensifies, slowly and as if in a dream, the atmosphere begins to change. The Destroyed Room is about the profusion of lenses, which brings the world right into our rooms but also keeps it at a distance. It’s about what we see and what we turn away from. And what’s coming. REaD focuses on one such club: The Scarlet Church where the performers’ illicit existence necessitates the keeping of Red secrets... A cabaret within a play, REaD features song, dance, performance poetry and a hilarious rollercoaster ride through Red history from pre-Raphaelite exotica to social exclusion and popular culture. Gail Porter, Libby McArthur (River City), Lorraine McIntosh (Deacon Blue) Julie Wilson Nimmo (Balamory) and former Radio Clyde presenter Suzie McGuire star in this brand-new production of Mum’s The Word 2. One of Scotland’s favourites, Mum’s The Word laughs at the wonderful comedic

horrors of child and teenager-rearing in this new and updated version of the hit show. Join the mums, now “older and wider”, on their journey into the parenting nightmare that is teenagers! Hysterically funny, poignant and thoroughly enjoyable throughout, this fantastic followup retains many of the funniest moments from the original production as it moves one-step-beyond into, not just the lives of their teenagers, but how the mums feel about growing older, their families and their relationships. Both funny and emotional by turn, this is a wonderful evening out.

Once there was a time with no mobiles, no online dating and no Facebook, when teenage girls waited with bated breath by the letterbox for their weekly issue of Jackie Magazine. In JACKIE THE MUSICAL we revisit those heady days, and tell the story of a recent divorcée who seeks advice once more from the pages of her old Jackie annuals. The quizzes, the fashion tips, the ‘do’s and don’ts on first date’ and above all the Cathy and Claire problem pages are all eagerly devoured by our plucky heroine as she revisits the dizzy world of the teen bible. Starring Janet Dibley (The Two of Us, EastEnders, Fat Friends), Olivier Award nominee Graham Bickley (Ragtime, Bread) and Nicholas Bailey (EastEnders, The Archers), JACKIE THE MUSICAL is accompanied by a pulsating sound track of classic 70’s hits. Thrill once more to the unmistakable sounds of pop idols Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Marc Bolan and many more.

The team behind 2013’s smash hit The Pirates of Penzance returns with another Gilbert & Sullivan comedy classic. A stellar cast, in the hands of director Martin Lloyd-Evans, brings the fun to life with a delicious mix of cheeky English Music Hall and exquisite Japanese tradition. The Mikado has decreed that flirting should be punishable by death. But when his son Nanki-Poo falls for the beautiful Yum-Yum, it looks like someone might be heading for the executioner’s block… Packed with anti-Establishment silliness, and full of larger than life characters including self serving politicians that are all too recognisable today, this playful show features some of G&S’s most popular tunes, including Three Little Maids, Tit-willow and I’ve Got a Little List. Several of the team from The Pirates of Penzance return, including Richard Suart, Nicholas Sharratt, Rebecca Bottone, former Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Sioned Gwen Davies and conductor Derek Clark. Baritone Stephen Richardson sings The Mikado, with comic genius Andrew Shore as Pooh-Bah.

This winter discover the enchanted, sparkling world of Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella, in the European premiere of this beloved fairy tale. In her grief, the young Cinderella plants a rose at her mother’s graveside. When her father remarries, the future seems bleaker than ever. Her wicked stepmother is intent on pushing aside kind and beautiful Cinderella in favour of her two nasty step sisters. The course of true love never did run smooth but Cinderella does meet her prince and romance blossoms. Acclaimed New Zealand designer Tracy Grant Lord’s luxurious costumes and extravagant sets create a glittering fantasy world peopled with characters that are touching, funny and real. Dazzling against the light and dark of Prokofiev’s powerful score, this ravishing interpretation of the timeless rags-to-riches romance is everything you could wish for and more. The Scottish Ballet Orchestra accompanies live performing the world famous Prokofiev score.

Dreamers are people who dare to dream while not being asleep. Lachky takes pleasure in making sense from nonsense and exploring links between reality and surrealism. His work highlights the beauty and power of the moving body and intertwines it with his quirky and humorous style.

Award-winning Eyal, and music producer and artist Behar have created a stream of critically acclaimed, original works for some of the world’s leading dance companies, including Batsheva Dance Company. The explosive world premiere Process Day will be inspired by Tirzah and Micachu’s I’m Not Dancing.

Critically acclaimed theatre from Company Chordelia’s award winning Artistic Director Kally Lloyd-Jones. Combining theatre and dance, this powerful new piece evokes legendary 20th Century dancer Nijinsky’s journey from global success to the desolate isolation of mental illness. Inspired by the rhythmic obsession of his diaries, Young and Old Nijinsky consider their life together, on and off stage, trying to make sense of the loss of self. WWW.CHORDELIA.CO.UK

In 2012, Sandy Allan and a team of mountaineers made an epic journey to the limits of survival. In an incredible feat of endurance, Sandy and his climbing partner Rick Allen reached the summit of Nanga Parbat – one of the world’s deadliest mountains. Widely regarded as the ‘last great climb’ in the Himalaya, the team’s first ascent of the 8,000-metre Mazeno Ridge took eighteen days, three of which were endured without food and water. In 2013, the ascent was awarded the highly coveted Piolet d’Or mountaineering award.

On a remote mountain in Peru in June 1985 mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in an unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner – Joe Simpson – dangling on the rope far below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed.

Sandy will reveal the story behind his journey and read from his autobiographical account, In Some Lost Place, which was shortlisted for this year’s Boardman Tasker Prize – an award widely regarded as the most prestigious international prize for mountain literature.

years later Simon is still at it. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range of mountains that he has not visited and what’s more he’s brought back the stories and pictures so you don’t have to! Come along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama, excitement and beauty of modern, lightweight, alpinism. Told with wit, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and video collected on his great climbs, Simon both entertains and inspires.

Throughout the day we’ll have lots of family friendly workshops as well as a very special film premiere of the Burns Stramash-up! - a film made by local primary school children! Then, at sunset, join us for a lantern procession along the River Ness.

Requiem, Cantique de Jean Racine, and Pavane Feel the Spirit

Inverness Choral Sinfonia (Leader - Andrew Martin) Conductor Gordon Tocher Fauré’s Requiem has been a popular addition to the choral repertoire ever since its first performance, and Inverness Choral Society are pleased to present this work again in Inverness. Two further works by Fauré complete one half of the concert, the Cantique de Jean Racine, a choral work written in 1865 and which won the 19-year old composer first prize in a composition competition; and the much loved Pavane.

If that’s not enough Burns action for you then for families with young ones we have the very special Wee Burns Ceilidh.

John Rutter is perhaps Britain’s foremost popular composer. Feel the Spirit is a suite of seven movements incorporating arrangements of familiar spirituals in a range of styles, and was premiered at Carnegie Hall, New York in 2001.

There will be some interesting characters around the place so keep your eyes peeled and if you need a pit stop our restaurant will be serving delicious Burns fayre all day!

Drama and darkness sit alongside lightness and good humour in energetic young German conductor Clemens Schuldt’s concert of contrasts. Astonishing young British-Taiwanese pianist and Alfred Brendel protégé Kit Armstrong is the soloist in Mozart’s tempestuous D minor Piano Concerto, K466. The concert begins with the wild, gripping emotions of the Olympie Overture by Joseph Martin Kraus, a contemporary of Haydn. By way of complete contrast, Schuldt concludes his programme with the warm-hearted Intermezzo from Richard Strauss’s final opera, Capriccio, and the graceful, sometimes mischievous playfulness of Beethoven’s high-spirited First Symphony.

Piano Gabriela Montero Dancing on the edge of two very different traditions, where better than the joyfully addictive work of Piazzolla to explore this meeting of sounds? The tango rhythms of his Three Pieces for Piano and Strings - half-dance, half-fugue - are complemented by Villa-Lobos’ imagining of a Brazilian Bach, taking drama and structure and creating one passionate yet ordered flow of cultures.

With numerous awards for her spontaneous and expressive improvisations, who better than Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero to join us for Mozart’s Piano Concerto in E flat major? Her extended sparkling cadenzas ring out with exuberance and a sense of freedom, making for an invigorating experience. After performing she very often asks the audience to call out pieces and ideas for her to improvise on - come prepared with your best challenge. WWW.SCOTTISHENSEMBLE.CO.UK

Light and Dark in a Scottish Forest

Bringing together the various talents of some of Scotland’s top amateur photographers, the annual RPS Touring Exhibition includes prints from Highland photographers, Alastair Cochrane ARPS, Mike Tibbs LRPS, Jim Whyte LRPS from the Inverness Camera Club and John Simpson from the Dingwall Camera Club.

Iain Robertson The ‘100 Steps’ forest walk in Cromarty is a constantly changing challenge of texture and tone. These pictures all started from life sketches in a 6”x4” notebook. Enlarging them in the studio meant changes in materials, techniques and priorities.

Whisper of the Stars Bryan Alexander An exhibition of striking photographs portraying the traditional life of indigenous peoples from across the remote regions of the Russian Arctic. Taken by British photographer Bryan Alexander, the images reveal aspects of the lives of the Chukchi, Dolgan, Even, Khanty, Komi, Nenets, and Nganasan people, showing how they live today in their native communities, their traditional camps, transportation and dress as well as activities such as reindeer herding, hunting and fishing.

STALLS GALLERY

Poise and Reflection Jane Lewis This exhibition is a collection of diverse pieces. Muted colours with impressive subject matters portray powerful imagery. Together they form poise and elegance. Traditional mediums are used to create experimental and often avant-garde results.
