MUSICALS Million Dollar Quartet
And a particularly warm welcome to the last Eden Court brochure that I will introduce...but more of that later. There are over 110 different shows in this brochure and that doesn’t include our fantastic cinema programme, the Inverness Film Festival (November 8-12) or our huge programme of classes – all of which are covered in different publications (or check out www.eden-court.co.uk). With so much happening you should be able to find something you’ll love. It will be fascinating to see the drama and orchestral worlds combine when two of our favourite and most adventurous companies, Vanishing Point and The Scottish Ensemble, come together for Tabula Rasa. I’m really pleased to see Highland rooted Dogstar Theatre go from strength to strength and their Sky is Safe should give a fascinating insight into a clash of cultures. February is a long way off but I’m proud that once again Eden Court will be producing its own work and touring to the rest of Scotland with The Return. There are exciting events throughout the programme from Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and two of our national orchestras while our fun-packed pantomime Snow White, and Frosty’s Allotment, our beautiful show or under 5s, make Eden Court the place to be for the festive season. And if you want to get in the mood early for cold and snow come and hear local hero Roddie Riddle speak about his arctic experiences. After 20 years as Chief Executive of Eden Court I’ll be leaving at the end of September. It’s fascinating to look back at the growth in audiences and the type of shows we’re now able to attract. With over 300 shows a year for 20 years, choosing my highlights is difficult but there are a few that stick in my mind.
More recently a sold out week of Hairspray in 2016 was fantastic in itself but also paved the way for the great run of musicals that we have enjoyed this summer. In 2010 as part of the Inverness Book Festival we held one of the first public performances from Edwyn Collins after his devastating stroke. It was an emotional evening, filled with stories, laughter and – of course – great music. I’ve got so many memories of shows I loved – including the return to full programmes in Inverness from Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera and launching the now internationally respected Inverness Film Festival. But more than any of the individual shows, there are two things about my decades at Eden Court of which I am most proud. The first is that we have turned the building into the largest contemporary arts centre in Scotland, which buzzes with life all day long in so many different spaces. The second is the flourishing of Eden Court CREATIVE, which delivers vital work within our building but also to hard-to-reach groups and individuals across the H ighlands, and is the largest programme of Creative Learning anywhere in the UK. Finally I’d like to thank all the dedicated and talented staff at Eden Court who have made everything we’ve achieved in the last 20 years possible and also to thank you, our audience and customers. Eden Court is a very special place which is here for the people of the Highlands. There are many ingredients which make Eden Court successful but the audience is the always the most important.
Featured on the front cover: YolanDa Brown - Page 39
I’d always been told that Inverness couldn’t build an audience for contemporary dance so selling out the Empire for the first visit from Nederlands Dans Theatre 2 in 2004 was a great moment.

Written by Adam McNamara Directed by Joe Douglas Four police officers sit in a riot van. Called out to a domestic dispute which may turn violent, they are on 'stand by', waiting for the go ahead to enter the flat where a man is wielding a samurai sword.
Against the backdrop of public sector cuts to frontline services, we experience the turmoil of the officers caught between following orders and their duty to protect each other.
We wait with them, experiencing their intensely close relationship forged through the stress of the job; their banter and boredom; and the tensions that reach boiling point.

Several people have told me essentially this same story about the still, sad music of Pärt – how it became, for them or for others, a vehicle of solace. One or two such anecdotes seem sentimental; a series of them begins to suggest a slightly uncanny phenomenon
Over recent years Vanishing Point have created and premiered a number of works at Eden Court including the award winning Beautiful Cosmos of Ivor Cutler. The Scottish Ensemble are regular visitors to Eden Court with a loyal audience for their annual concert season and local residencies. Their recent collaboration on the Goldberg Variations with Sweden’s Andersson Dance was a triumph. We are delighted that two of our favourite companies have decided to work together and can’t wait to see their interpretation of Arvo Pärt’s haunting music. This co-production that sets Arvo Pärt's spiritual and mesmeric Tabula Rasa in a theatrical context, explores the recognised role of the piece in the care of patients during their final days. With the musicians forming an integral part of the drama, this visionary production explores the documented role of Pärt’s haunting piece, which has come to be known - and used - as a profound and transcendental piece of music. It is a life-affirming exploration of care, humanity, suffering - and the uplifting power, and endless importance, of art.

Horizontal Collaboration is a courtroom drama with a dark twist where sex, power and politics collide with emotion, seduction and destruction. Four steely U.N. lawyers read startling interview transcripts from their laptops in an explosive tribunal concerning horizontal collaboration - the name for the supposed wartime crime of sex with enemy soldiers. The courtroom's intense stillness contrasts with the volatile narrative of African warlord's wife Judith K. After her husband's assassination, Judith becomes leader and takes her people on a treacherous path towards peace, or does she? Can women ever have the freedom to lead in a different way from men? From writer-director David Leddy, who is described as a leading theatrical innovator (The Times) ‘Institution’ (The Independent), and ‘Genius’ (The Scotsman). WWW.DAVIDLEDDY.COM

Anyone with young children will recognise these immortal words instantly as the opening lines of the book Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynley Dodd. All the Little Gentleman wants is a friend. A friend he can sit in the sun with and listen to the birds. A friend to walk with and share his cookies. But nobody seems to like the Little Gentleman and nobody wants to be his friend.
The seventeenth century has never been so silly! Chaos, mayhem and stupidity reign supreme as children’s comedy trio the Three Half Pints swish their swords, buff their boots and flourish their feathers in their most ridiculous adventure yet! Will they defeat the dastardly evil-doers? Will they save the damsel in distress? Will they actually read the book before writing the show? Fresh from Justin’s House and Spot Bots, join these CBeebies favourites in a hilarious new slapstick adventure of chivalry, swordplay and suddenly falling over.
The Little Gentleman thinks he will live a sad and lonely life forever...Until one day he is woken up by a curious dog who just wants to play. An energetic two-hander with an original score by Danny Krass and design by Karen Tennent, this is a playful celebration of friendship and acceptance.

Revival of the 2008 co-production with Welsh National Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu & Teatro Real, Madrid. Passionate, flamboyant, gripping: Sir David McVicar's La traviata has been in high demand worldwide since its Scottish Opera premiere in 2008. Set in the demi-monde of 1880s Paris, this stunning show is designed with sumptuous period style by Tanya McCallin. With his characteristic eye for detail, McVicar's production gets to the core of Violetta and Alfredo's doomed love affair - finding a heartbreakingly human story in the midst of a hedonistic world where both the rich and the wretched have their fun. Verdi's magnificent score sweeps the characters through their every shifting mood - from the wildly dramatic to the most tender of moments. Russian-Dutch soprano Gulnara Shafigullina, recently Violetta at the Mariinsky, and Anush Hovhannisyan, who represented Armenia at Cardiff Singer of the World 2017, head a cast of international talent including multi-award-winning Dutch tenor Peter Gijsbertsen and British baritone Stephen Gadd. David Parry (Carmen 2016) conducts. Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Every player in the RSNO is a star, and when you hear our principal trumpet Christopher Hart playing this little jewel of a concerto from 18th century Prague, you'll understand why. It's a long way from Ravel's ravishing homage to the baroque era – written in the aftermath of the Great War. And then conductor Gemma New raises the roof with Beethoven's Seventh Symphony: 40 minutes of unstoppable rhythm, raw energy and melodies you'll never forget.
When Christoph König conducts Strauss’s joyous Aus Italien, you’ll wonder why we don’t hear it more often. Brahms’s noble Haydn Variations, which opens the new concert season, and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto are rather more familiar. But wait ‘til you hear Mendelssohn’s much-loved melodies in the hands of our soloist, the extraordinary Kristóf Baráti.

The Fairy’s Kiss Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice Maiden, The Fairy’s Kiss (Le Baiser de la Fée) was first brought to The Royal Ballet’s stage by renowned Scottish choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan. Adding a dark edge to an unsettling tale, MacMillan’s ballet received rave reviews on its 1960 debut. Now, 25 years after MacMillan’s death, Gary Harris has created stunning new sets and costumes for this landmark season.
The Rite of Spring Feel the raw energy of the score – and the anguish of moral conflict, brought to an end through violent sacrifice. Choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director Christopher Hampson, this ballet was widely acclaimed following its 2013 performance at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Conductor Gordon Tocher Soprano Catriona Clark, Colleen Nicoll Tenor Tyler Clarke Bass Andrew McTaggart Mozart’s Great Mass in C was first performed in Salzburg in 1783, one of the soloists being the composer’s wife Constanze. The work remained unfinished, although modern editors have effected completions to facilitate the full liturgy of the mass to be performed. This particular setting of the mass is a large-scale work for double chorus and orchestra and provides a challenge for singers and players alike. Doug Scott – Crawling Down The Ogre 40th Anniversary Lecture EMPIRE THEATRE TUE 24 OCT 19.30 SEAT PRICE £16.00 EDEN COURT FRIENDS DISCOUNT APPLIES
The Ogre (7,285 m) is the most difficult of the world's high mountains to climb – all approaches to the summit involve highly technical rock climbing at high altitude. In 1977 Doug Scott and Chris Bonington made the first ascent, just as the sun was setting extending the boundaries of what had been achieved before at that altitude. But triumph almost turned to tragedy on the subsequent descent in the dark. While abseiling off the summit block, Doug slipped on water ice and crashed into the cliff he had just climbed, breaking both legs just above the ankles. A storm blew in lasting five days, during which time Chris smashed his ribs and contracted pneumonia. It took eight hard days to reach Base Camp – with Doug crawling all of the way and Chris in excruciating pain. It was 24 years before there was a second ascent of The Ogre. Hear Doug tell his story in person 40 years later...

There’s a lovely walk through The South Sutor forest just outside the little town of Cromarty called ‘The Hundred Steps’ although there are actually 127. With mainly birch and beech and fascinating areas of light and shade, I love to go up there with a little sketch book and draw from life. These are then brought back to my studio where they are enlarged to the size you see here. I will use water colour and acrylic paints, charcoal, oil and chalk pastels, conte and graphite sticks. I love the contrast between the sunlight on bark and the dark mysterious shadows.

Led by jazz violin superstar Christian Garrick, The Budapest Café Orchestra play an atmospheric mix of traditional folk and gypsy flavoured music from across the Balkans and Russia.
Renowned jazz guitarist Martin Taylor and the SNJO promise to raise the temperature several degrees with liberated interpretations of the music of Django Reinhardt, one of the most perennially popular figures in jazz. Long after his passing, Django remains a hero to guitarists everywhere and his wonderfully evergreen music never fails to reach into our hearts and lift our spirits.
Evoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires, the evening features Klezmer, Romanian Doinas, Hungarian Czadas and beautiful ballads, such as the theme to Schindler’s List and Andy Statman’s beautiful Flatbush Walt.
There is no guitarist on the world stage today more capable of evoking the spirit of Django's ageless music than Martin. He connects the golden age of Parisian Swing to the present day through a discography full of authentic gypsy jazz, acclaimed recordings with his Spirit of Django ensembles and his extraordinary partnership with Reinhardt's closest musical collaborator, Stéphane Grappelli. The halcyon days of the construction yard at Nigg Bay; known as ‘Highlands Fabricators’, are perhaps best remembered between the early 1970s and the late 1980s when the yard had a healthy order book and employed, quite literally, thousands of men and women. George Emney arrived at the yard one bitterly cold February morning (having travelled up on the Inverness sleeper from London and with the instruction to report to the engineering manager of the day). His reputation preceded him and a very wily manager told him that, in no uncertain terms, he would do exactly as he was told! Come and enjoy an evening with George Emney as he recounts life at the yard - beginning with the Songs of Travel by Ralph Vaughan Williams and followed by some anecdotes interspersed with a familiar Scottish ballad or two!

THU 31 AUG (LIVE) SAT 02 SEP (ENCORE) WED 06 SEP (ENCORE)

The incredible Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful, Great Britain) returns in her Evening Standard Best Actress awardwinning role. A young woman is driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child in Simon Stone’s radical production of Lorca’s achingly powerful masterpiece. Set in contemporary London, Piper’s portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a staggering, shocking, climax. Please note that this broadcast does not have an interval.
The young Clara creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to play with her favourite present – a Nutcracker doll. But the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer is waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure. After defeating the Mouse King, the Nutcracker and Clara travel through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a wonderful display of dances. Back home, Clara thinks she must have been dreaming – but doesn’t she recognize Drosselmeyer’s nephew?
INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL It's exciting to think off all the great films we have screened over the past 14 years, including Scottish premieres of Oscar winning films like No Country For Old Men, Son of Saul, Manchester By The Sea and The Last King of Scotland, as well as the audiences who have taken a chance on some of the obscure films that they might not have heard of. Submissions are now open, and films are being selected - I can't wait to see what wonders will be on the screen this year. FESTIVAL DIRECTOR AND EDEN COURT FILM PROGRAMER, PAUL MACDONALD-TAYLOR
