One of the most magical aspects of cinema is that it opens up a window onto the world. It shows you sights and people that you might otherwise never get the chance to experience and, unlike television, cinema does so on the big screen. This year's Inverness Film Festival will show you eagles soaring over the Mongolian plains, an incredible 1,200 mile pilgrimage across Tibet and two small boys from different castes travelling across Nepal together. And that’s just in our Roof of the World programme. The rest of the festival takes us to Brazil, Australia, Iran, Canada, Japan and all round Europe.

Real Illuminators: Scotland's Pioneers of Documentary Filmmaking

We are also celebrating cinema of the past with a programme that replicates what it would have been like for the majority of Highland audiences in the early 20th Century with Remembering the Highland and Islands Film Guild. This is an evening of 16mm films, stories and poetry on Friday night, followed on Saturday by a writing workshop about your memories of cinema. On Sunday we celebrate early female directors – a subject that is sadly often overlooked – Real Illuminators: Scotland’s Pioneer of Documentary Filmmaking. Plus, for the bravest of cinema lovers we are screening Abel Gance's 1927 masterpiece Napoleon in its newly restored 330 minute glory (yes there will be an interval, three of them).

…a quiet delight. ★★★★ THE GUARDIAN Adam Driver delivers a career-best performance as Paterson, a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey. Sharing the name with his home town, he adheres to a simple daily routine: driving the same route, picking up all manner of passengers, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him. By contrast, his wife Laura's world is ever changing as she embarks upon different and inspired projects daily. Funny, philosophical and profound, Jarmusch's latest feature celebrates the wonder in the ordinary, and proves there's poetry to be found in every aspect of the everyday.

No other band in rock’n’roll history has rivalled The Stooges. JIM JARMUSCH Jim Jarmusch pays tribute to The Stooges, who burst out of Michigan in the late 60s and blew a crater in the musical landscape with their aggressive style of Rock’n’Roll. Jarmusch presents the context of the Stooges emergence musically, culturally, politically, historically and relates their adventures and misadventures while charting their inspirations and the reasons behind their initial commercial challenges, as well as their long-lasting legacy. ROOF OF THE WORLD Geographically the ‘Roof of the World’ is the area with the world's highest mountains – the Himalayas. Our strand of films takes in Tibet, Nepal, Afghanistan and Mongolia, as cinematically they all contain the same themes and imagery. Of the seven films there are five which are about children discovering the world and their place within it, while surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery on Earth. A young girl wants to defy convention and become an eagle hunter (The Eagle Huntress), two boys need to retrieve their hen so the poor one can use the money to feed his family (The Black Hen), when a movie producer buys a boys favourite camel he sets out to get it back (Celestial Camel) and when a family is about to lose their farm a young boy enters a dangerous horse race to save his families livelihood (Zud). In the developed world our youth can become too concerned with their phones and social status, but in other areas of the world childhood fears and responsibilities can be far greater. 16 YEARS TILL SUMMER Uisdean wants forgiveness. After 16 years in prison, he wants to go home to nurse his ageing father. But Uisdean also needs to rebuild his life. With the isolation of the Highland landscape both a blessing and curse, he begins the hard graft of re-inventing himself. What follows is as much a struggle with tradition and Highland identity as it is with the weight of his own past. Using cinematic techniques to deliberately blur the line between the fairy-tale of the heart and the rational judgement of society, 16 Years Till Summer is a hybrid of heart and head; magic-realism and documented tragedy. RAW …a terrific little essay on how, with the right grooming and socialisation, you can normalise pretty much any behaviour with a group of people. SCREEN ANARCHY ★★★★ GUARDIAN Everyone in Justine's family is a vet. And a vegetarian. She is a brilliant and promising student. When she starts at veterinary school, she enters a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. During the first week of hazing rituals, desperate to fit in whatever the cost, she strays from her family principles when she eats raw meat for the first time. Little does she know she will soon face the terrible and unexpected consequences of her actions when her true self begins to emerge…

Having previously screened two of celebrated Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda’s previous films at the festival, I Wish (IFF 2014) and Our Little Sister (IFF 2015), we are delighted to bring you the Scottish premiere of After The Storm. Ryota is a failed writer, a third-rate detective, and a hardened gambler. His wife has left him and although he adores his young son, he is resigned to his position on the sidelines of the boy’s life. But one night, when a typhoon strikes, the family are forced to spend the night together at Ryota’s mother’s home. Could this be a pivotal moment in their lives? A bittersweet and tender Kore-eda style family drama that’s a welcome addition to his complex and fascinating body of work about contemporary families.

Rarely does a debut feature come along with the visual and narrative confidence of “Thirst”, a beautifully crafted, subtly told story… VARIETY A couple and their teenage son eke out a living on a hilltop, doing the laundry for local hotels, despite the intermittent water supply. Their simple life is overturned by the arrival of a father and daughter team of diviner and well‐digger, who promise to bring an end to this precarious existence by finding a source on their arid hill. But ultimately, these newcomers quench a thirst that is much stronger than that for mere water.

Julia Ducournau’s worryingly brilliant first feature film gained a lot of attention at the Toronto International Film Festival after there were reports of dry-heaving in the aisles and fainting audience members. Watch at your own risk, and time your dinner well as you may not want to eat much before, or after, the screening! IFF 18+ I
