Welcome to the 10th Inverness Film Festival. With this milestone I have decided to take a look at how cinema has changed over the last 120 years. Essentially it’s the same, images projected onto a screen in front of an audience, but there have been numerous changes and advances over the years to add new dimensions to old favourites. We’ll be screening George Méliès 110 year old film A Trip to the Moon alongside an inspiring documentary detailing the film’s preservation. We’ll have two of Alfred Hitchcock’s early silent films; The Pleasure Garden and Blackmail and both these films will have live piano accompaniment by Wendy Hiscocks. We’ll also fast-forward 40 years to the era of the grand cinema-scope epic, by screening David Lean’s sumptuous classic, Lawrence of Arabia. All four of these films will be screened using beautiful brand new digital prints. We’re delighted to be screening one of the greatest love letters to cinema ever made, Hungarian director György Pálfi’s, ode to cinema Final Cut – Ladies And Gentlemen. Looking towards the future of cinema, we’ll screen Christopher Kenneally’s fascinating documentary Side By Side, which looks at the changing techniques involved in film-making. Every year we take a look at the work of first time directors so that you can get a first glimpse at the up and coming talent in world cinema. This year we have debuts from Scott Graham, Shell (Scotland), Tusi Tamasese, The Orator (New Zealand), Brandon Cronenberg, Antiviral (Canada), Leo Khasin, Kaddish For A Friend (Germany) and Tim Connery, Easton’s Article (America). As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Inverness Film Festival, I’d like to give special thanks to Michael McDaid, who began the festival, and Matt Lloyd who co-directed my first three festivals. I hope you enjoy the films, and remember don’t forget to vote for the audience award (the first three have gone to Japan, Sweden and Australia, I wonder where will be next). Paul Taylor, Festival Director and Eden Court Cinema Programmer PS You will note that some of the screenings are certified ‘IFF’ rather than the conventional BBFC certificates. This just means that at the time of publication, the BBFC hadn’t given the film a certificate – so we‘ve made our best guess. If you are unsure as to the age suitability of any screening, please ask the Box Office staff, or visit the Inverness Film Festival website for up to date information.

HIGHLIGHTS A LIAR’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY – THE UNTRUE STORY OF MONTY PYTHON’S GRAHAM CHAPMAN SCOTTISH PREMIERE
Graham Chapman, probably best remembered as ‘the dead one from Monty Python’, writes and stars in this animated feature about his own life. Narrated by Chapman before his death in 1989 this animation is incredible, yes. Surreal, certainly. True…who knows? At his memorial service John Cleese called Chapman ‘a freeloading bastard’. Now, as the film reunites him with Cleese, Jones, Palin and Gilliam for the first time in 23 years, he is set to earn a new title – the most prolific corpse since Elvis. I had no idea until now that Graham Chapman is in fact dead – I thought he was just being lazy. Terry Jones (15) I

I WISH KISEKI
SCOTTISH PREMIERE
Sometimes the most wondrous films that you will ever see come out of no-where, they sneak up on you and leave an impression so strong you just can’t shake it. This is such a film. It is the simple story of two young brothers who wish for their family to be reunited after their parents’ divorce. They hear a rumour that when the new bullet trains pass each other on the newly laid tracks near their town, they get a wish. So, along with a few of their friends, they set out on a journey to witness a miracle that could improve their difficult lives. After films such as Nobody Knows, Still Walking and the truly exceptional I Wish, Hirokazu Koreeda is fast turning into Yasujirô Ozu’s heir. His eye for small details and the way that families and children interact with one another is unmatched by anyone in cinema today. (IFF 8+) I

The Basque debate for independence has been ongoing since the 19th century and the Basque conflict has resulted in the death of more than 1,000 people. In 2009 their adventure brought them to Inverness where they performed at the Inverness Highland Games and became witness to the historic events taking place as Scotland prepares for its Independence Referendum. HOW TO START A REVOLUTION
Half a world away from Cairo’s Tahrir Square, an ageing American intellectual shuffles around his cluttered terrace house in a working-class Boston neighbourhood. His name is Gene Sharp. White-haired and now in his mid-eighties, he grows orchids, he has yet to master the internet and he hardly seems like a dangerous man. But for the world’s dictators his ideas can be the catalyst for the end of their regime. Nobel Peace Prize nominee Gene Sharp is one of the globe’s greatest thinkers on nonviolent revolutions. AELITA: QUEEN OF MARS
When engineer Los receives a mysterious radio signal from Mars he begins to fantasise about being watched from the planet where Aelita, daughter of the totalitarian leader, has been watching him from her telescope. With his marriage crumbling, Los becomes obsessed with building a spaceship that will take him to the woman of his dreams. Aelita: Queen Of Mars was the first science fiction film made in the Soviet Union during its golden era of film-making in the 1920’s. Predating Fritz Lang’s German expressionist masterpiece Metropolis by 3 years, Aelita was an influence on numerous films that followed over the next 90 years. This film will be accompanied by the acclaimed musical group Minima who have written an ambient, atmospheric and electrifying score especially for the film. (IFF 8+) I

FILM EVENT
SILENT FILM EXPLAINERS Live musicians were an essential part of the cinema experience, but some audiences were also treated to the finely honed craft of the Film Explainer. Part narrator and part actor, the film explainer stood next to the screen enriching the movies with an entertaining combination of background information, unique interpretation and theatrical storytelling. Join Scottish storyteller Andy Cannon, cellist/composer Wendy Weatherby and respected piper/guitarist Frank McLaughlin as they revive this lost art with their popular brand of traditional stories and music accompanying rare films from the Scottish Screen Archive including Scotland’s first fiction film from 1912. SCOTTISH PREMIERE
Final Cut could be one of the greatest achievements in cinema. It is the age-old story of boy meets girl – they fall for each other, but the girl already has a boy who wants to fight for her. One of the oldest stories in film, only what György Pálfi spectacular movie does is tells this story using clips from 500 of the finest films ever made. When the boy and girl look at each other it’s Sophia Loren/ Woody Allen /Joan Chen/Alain Delon looking back – when the two men face off it’s Charles Bronson/Darth Vader/Keanu Reeves/Toshirô Mifune/ Indiana Jones/Jason Bourne fighting over her. György Pálfi’s film is much more than just a film. It’s a celebration of cinema. It’s the greatest mix tape ever made. (IFF 18+) I

SILENT HITCHCOCK As part of our past/future of cinema strand we bring you new digital restorations of two of Alfred Hitchcock’s earliest films.
THE PLEASURE GARDEN The diverging lives of two dancers are told in suitably melodramatic style: one ascends to the heights, the other stumbles into a marriage with a dangerous womaniser. Hitchcock confidently ‘signed’ The Pleasure Garden, his debut as a director, with a handwritten signature on the opening credits, characteristically defending his decision by saying ‘Actors come and actors go, but the name of the director should stay clearly in the mind of the audiences’. GEORGES MÉLIÈS THE EXTRAORDINARY VOYAGE LE VOYAGE EXTRAORDINAIRE Technology and infinite patience from the alchemist's stone turns celluloid dross into cinematic gold in Serge Bromberg’s and Eric Lange’s tale of preservation magic. The 12-year restoration of a colour version of George Méliès’ seminal 1902 masterpiece A Trip to the Moon involved long, slow, tedious processes but Bromberg's documentary, liberally sprinkled with fanciful excerpts from Méliès’ surviving works, never bogs down in scientific detail. SIDE BY SIDE: THE SCIENCE, ART AND IMPACT OF DIGITAL CINEMA
For almost one hundred years there was only one way to make a movie – with film. But over the last two decades a digital process has emerged to challenge photochemical filmmaking. In Side By Side Keanu Reeves investigates the history, process and workflow of both digital and photochemical film creation. Through interviews with directors, cinematographers, film students, producers, editors and exhibitors, Reeves reveals their experiences and feelings about working with film and digital. At at time when digital and photochemical filmmaking coexist, Side By Side explores what has been gained, what is lost, and what the future might bring. (IFF 12+) I

WHAT IS THIS FILM CALLED LOVE? After spending several years making The Story of Film, Mark Cousins made this film over three days, for just £10. The film is a love poem to both the cinema of Sergei Eisenstein and the man himself, as Mark walks around the city where the great Russian director spent time in the early 1930’s. Cousins carries his photograph and tells him what’s been happening in both cinema and the world.
