FROM JANUARY 2015
WELCOME TO YOUR PACKED GUIDE TO THE NEXT FEW MONTHS AT EDEN COURT.. BUT THERE’S MUCH, MUCH MORE GOING ON.....
THANK YOU TO ALL OUR PATRONS FOR THEIR GENEROUS SUPPORT: Gordon & Rhona Adam
It’s the start of another year of brilliant entertainment at Eden Court. The next 60 pages are your guide to everything that’s happening on our stages over the next few months. As always we have chosen a huge variety of performances and hope that you will find several things to excite you. But Eden Court does much more than live entertainment... As I write this we’ve just finished the most successful ever Inverness Film Festival. In this brochure you can find our cinema screenings of live performances from some of the world’s best theatre, opera and dance companies(p28) but our cinema programme continues throughout the year bringing you the best of World, Independent and Hollywood films to the two comfiest cinemas in the Highlands. Just check the ICA magazine or our website for the full cinema programme. Eden Court CREATIVE delivers the largest programme of creative learning work in the UK. On pages 40 and 41 we tell you about some of the performance element of this work but that is really just the tip of the iceberg. Eden Court CREATIVE delivers work in schools and communities throughout the Highlands – giving people of all ages an opportunity to develop their artistic talents. We even deliver Higher and National 5 qualifications in dance and drama for school pupils. If you’re interested in our 60 weekly classes at Eden Court then pick up the CREATIVE brochure or if you want to know what we’re delivering in your area of the Highlands then please get in touch.
My highlights from this brochure include an amazing week of dance in March when Rambert bring us one of their most famous works, Rooster (p2), based on Rolling Stones music and Mick Jagger’s famous strut. This summer Rambert did a workshop for teenagers around Rooster and the final result was one of the most entertaining performances I’ve seen in a long time. I am also delighted that Scottish Ballet have chosen Eden Court to open Streetcar Named Desire (p3) before taking it on an American tour – this is a chance for Inverness audiences to see this work before anyone else. And finally I’d like to point you towards our comedy section on pages 22- 26 – it’s full of well known faces but it doesn’t include the Inverness Comedy Festival – Happy-ness – which will take place at the end of May (full line up to be announced nearer the time) or the Kevin Bridges performances in August which are already sold out. If you’d like weekly reminders about what’s on at Eden Court visit our website and sign up for our weekly e-mail. If you’d like advance information about events like Happy-ness or Kevin Bridges then join Eden Court Friends – not only will you be the first to know about our programme you’ll also get discounts on most ticket prices and at our restaurant. Just ask at box office for details.

The rock’n’roll swagger of the Rolling Stones is brought to life in Rooster, Christopher Bruce’s electrifying celebration of the swinging sixties. Sharp-suited, snake-hipped men and strong, sassy women perform virtuoso courtship dances to some of the Stone’s most famous tunes, including Not Fade Away, Paint It Black, Sympathy for the Devil and Little Red Rooster. One of Rambert’s all-time, most-loved works, Rooster tops the bill in a mixed programme also featuring Terra Incognita by pioneering dancemaker Shobana Jeyasingh - ‘the choreography fascinates, beguiles, stimulates’ Financial Times - and the latest work from dance’s hottest property Alexander Whitley, ‘one of the rising stars of Britain’s dance scene.’ GQ
Three years after its premiere wowed audiences across the UK, Scottish Ballet begins a new tour of its award-winning production, If you missed it the first time around now is your chance to find out what everyone was talking about, before Scottish Ballet takes it on tour throughout the USA! Trying to leave a troubled past behind her, fading southern belle Blanche DuBois moves into her sister Stella’s New Orleans apartment. Stella’s brutish husband Stanley sees that Blanche is not what she appears to be, and sets out to destroy her.
Rambert combines world-class dancers, inventive choreography and a live orchestra to create an exhilarating theatrical experience.
Set to a specially commissioned jazz-inspired score by awardwinning composer Peter Salem, Scottish Ballet presents its Olivier Award winning adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ thrilling play. The Company continues to push the boundaries of modern ballet in a collaboration with theatre and film director Nancy Meckler and choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, creating a powerful infusion of drama and dance.

Park is an urban oasis, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eight characters play, fight, fall in love and learn to survive. In this playground of relationships, young lovers wrestle naked in a historic fountain, a graffiti artist sprays his story, a busker finds his only appreciative audience in a bag lady and a flag waving bully rants worn out political beliefs. Their stories intertwine creating a modern day fairy tale that is alternately sharp, funny and cruel. Delivering fresh statements about our time and treating us to Vardimon’s insightful humour and beautifully detailed movement, Park is a breathtaking collision of highly acute physical theatre, text, athletic dance and funky music. Told with stunning imagery, thrills, spills, heartbreak, happiness and the odd bit of humour, Three’s A Crowd is an aerial dance theatre show involving harness flying, aerial acrobatics, circus, dance and theatre. Directed by Jennifer Paterson, designed by Becky Minto, written by Zoe Venditozzi, and set to a powerful new score by Luke Sutherland.
Choreography: Peter Darrell, featuring original scenarios by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa Music: Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Crafted for Scottish Ballet by Peter Darrell, the company’s founding Artistic Director, a famous story teller and incredible dancemaker, this Nutcracker will create magical memories for a new generation. Over forty years after its premier audiences once again have an opportunity to share this production with families and friends. After a fun-filled Christmas party full of magic and celebrations, young Carla falls asleep and dreams that she helps the Nutcracker Prince to defeat an army of giant mice. She is rewarded by a visit to the glittering Land of Ice and Snow where snowflakes come to life, sparkling as they dance, then onwards to the magical Kingdom of Sweets - the enchanted Realm of the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy. Peter Darrell’s magical world of The Nutcracker has been reimagined by Olivier Award winning designer Lez Brotherston, adding sumptuous layers of plush Victoriana and traditional festive fare to the original 1973 production. The Scottish Ballet Orchestra accompanies live, performing the world famous Tchaikovsky score. WWW.SCOTTISHBALLET.CO.UK

Opera at its grandest, Verdi’s Il trovatore hasn’t been seen on the Scottish Opera stage since 2001. Dark and menacing, Peter Watson’s production gives this monumental story the space it deserves. The stark, brooding lines of Tim Hatley’s imposing set stand in impressive contrast to the blood and thunder of Verdi’s score, and provide a majestic backdrop for a cast and chorus of over 50. A gypsy woman is discovered in the castle of the Count di Luna, crouched over the cradle of his youngest son. When the boy falls ill, she is burned at the stake for witchcraft. Her daughter, crazed with grief, snatches the child intending to kill him, but in her madness, throws her own son onto the fire. Years later, she has brought the Count’s son up as her own and he and his elder brother, unaware of

The cast includes some of the UK’s finest singers, including Roland Wood (Werther 2013), Anne Mason (Der Ring des Nibelungen 2004) and Matthew Best (Tosca 2005), leading British soprano Claire Rutter (Turandot 2014) and renowned Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones. of Beethoven’s lyrical Violin Concerto, and Donald Runnicles, the BBC SSO’s Chief Conductor, frames symphony and concerto alike in two stirring hymns to freedom: two supreme masters, separated by a century but both set alight by the unbreakable power of the human spirit. WWW.BBC.CO.UK/BBCSSO
The sheer loveliness and passionate lyricism of Barber’s Violin Concerto is superb. It has one of the most arresting openings of any concerto - a great finale to this concert of mid-20th century masterworks. Stravinsky and Britten wrote their works around the same time in the late 1930s, but otherwise they are chalk and cheese: Britten as flamboyant and extrovert as Stravinsky is concentrated in his jazzy baroque tribute to Bach. Swensen has a special affection for Prokofiev’s Five Melodies. They started life as songs, then became pieces for violin and piano - now Swensen has orchestrated them and given a whole extra dimension to these lovely miniatures. WWW.SCO.ORG.UK

A dramatisation of De Profundis by Oscar Wilde. Directed and dramatised by the award-winning Gareth Armstrong.
Alan Ayckbourn’s comic masterpiece is probably the funniest of his famous Norman Conquests trilogy and follows six characters and a tangle of relationships over the course of a summer’s weekend in a country house. Ayckbourn focuses his inimitable, sharp, acerbic wit to reveal the secrets, lies and deception, which bubble beneath the surface of family relationships.
Performed by Gerard Logan, Wilde Without the Boy is a dramatic interpretation of De Profundis, the letter Oscar Wilde wrote to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, from his cell in Reading gaol. Two years previously, Wilde had been imprisoned for acts of gross indecency with other males. Brilliant, loving, witty and passionate, Wilde Without the Boy is a glimpse into the humbled, bruised, loving soul of one of the greatest geniuses ever to have lived.

Monroe as we’ve never seen her before: alone in her bedroom, in dressing gown and slippers; no glitz, no glamour, no masks. Overdosed on pills, the woman behind the icon unravels her remarkable life and bares all, revealing a biting intelligence, a frustrated talent and an imperfect body. This stark confessional (DiMaggio, Gable, Miller, her mother - it’s all here) offers a radical interpretation of this Hollywood legend and leads us, in real time, to the very moment of her death.
Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes, is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley.
Hear the riveting true stories of Crean’s Antarctic explorations as one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive the three famous expeditions. His story is a testament of human fortitude against all the elements of the Antarctic, his 36 mile, solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly has been described by Antarctic historians as the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration. He was subsequently awarded the Albert Medal for his bravery. This multi-award winning show has now played critically acclaimed sell-out performances throughout Ireland, USA, Australia, Europe and the UK. WWW.TOMCREAN.CO.UK

In the eighteenth century, it’s a stormy start to marriage for seventeen-year-old Isabel and her minister husband Aneas as they arrive from Edinburgh onto the remote island of Hirta (St. Kilda) to spread the gospel in the Gaelic speaking North. Amongst the inhabitants lives the extraordinary Lady Grange, based on a true historical figure named Rachel Chiesley, who’s desperate to return to civilisation and tortured by a life of abduction and banishment. While Lady Grange clings with tragic dignity to her old straw chair, Isabel uncovers alarming similarities as she battles between youthful exhilaration and the danger of being too troublesome a wife. An internationally renowned play of profound power about liberty and lost love, revived for its first Scottish tour since 1988. WWW.BORDERLINETHEATRE.CO.UK

Upside of Downs is an exhibition in support of Down’s Syndrome Scotland, the only charity in the country solely focussed on the needs of people with Down’s syndrome and their family carers. This exhibition showcases the work of Deeside based artist Cheryl Lord. Her grandson Alex was born with Down’s syndrome in 2004. Her paintings aim to capture Alex’s warmth and empathy as well as question some of the difficulties he faces. These 30 oil on canvas paintings offer the unique perspective of a grandmother’s love and affection for her grandson. They present snapshots of an individual’s early life and reflect his immense impact on those around him. Following the exhibition’s success so far, both publicly and for her personally, Cheryl is keen to continue adding to this wonderful story for the foreseeable future.

There was once only the sound of bees and the wind in the wiry grass, the low murmuring of moles in the cool dark earth, and the song of birds in the high blue sky.
Varmints tells the poignant tale of one small creature’s struggle to preserve a world in danger of being lost forever. Every day the city grows larger and the noise grows louder, until there is so much noise that no-one can hear themselves think. This exhilarating dance-theatre show is choreographed by B-boy and Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate Wilkie Branson and directed by children’s theatre specialist Sally Cookson. Co-produced and commissioned by East London Dance, Sadler’s Wells and Stratford Circus. Based on the book by Helen Ward and Marc Craste, with kind permission of Templar Publishing.
