o here we are – another year of entertainment beckons and we can’t wait to get started. Something I’m particularly excited about is Vanishing Point and the National Theatre of Scotland’s collaborative production of The Beautiful Cosmos of Ivor Cutler (page 13). This will be a musical and a visual journey based on the extraordinary true story of

Scotland’s most famous exile. For all of us at Eden Court, this is an extra special piece of theatre as the whole thing will be rehearsed here, premiered here, and then taken on the road. It’s always great to be able to accommodate theatre companies and be swept along by the excitement of something that’s in production. If I’m honest, it’s also great to be able to say we had it here first. Local theatre company Dogstar are back with new drama Factor 9 (page 14). Written by Hamish

MacDonald and featuring a cast including Mathew Zajac (The Tailor of Inverness) This story of hope and survival tells how infected blood products from American prisons changed the lives of haemophiliac sufferers in Scotland forever. A real eye opener. At the other end of the spectrum – ahead of appearing in London’s West End, we have the brand new musical, 20th Century Boy (page 39) This fantastic show is inspired by the life of rock legend Marc Bolan

boards with a host of other fabulous dancers. Plus, once again we’re hosting Breakin’ Convention (page 09) and, being the only Scottish venue on the tour, we’re expecting a great turn out from those who and features some of the greatest pop songs ever written including, I Love to Boogie, Hot Love and, of course, 20th Century Boy! No stranger to the West End stage however is Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap (page 15) – this is the longest EVER running show of any kind in British history and has been performed over 25,000 times. I’m delighted it’s on tour for its 60thAnniversary – everyone loves a classic whodunit! Dance aficionados are in for a real treat as Mathew Bourne’s company New Adventures perform their interpretation of Lord of the Flies (page 03). Fan’s of Strictly will whoop with delight as Brendan Cole (page 07) treads the

came in 2012 and a whole host of new breakin’ crews and hip-hop fans from all over the country. There’s just so much. I could go on and on but I’m running out of space! I hope when you read through this brochure you’ll be as excited as I am. I’m laying down a challenge to you this year. Go and see something different that you never imagined was the kind of thing you’d enjoy. Let us know how you get on, you might just surprise yourself. Best Wishes Colin Marr Chief Executive Eden Court

Running til 05 January – don’t miss Eden Court’s Family Panto, Sleeping Beauty! Eden Court is supported by

Matthew Bourne’s NEW ADVENTURES has created some of the most successful shows of the last 25 years, including Swan Lake, Nutcracker! and the sell-out hit, Sleeping Beauty. Now the company unites a cast of New Adventures dancers with remarkable young talent from Inverness in an extraordinary adaptation of William Golding’s classic novel, Lord of the Flies choreographed by Olivier nominated Scott Ambler. Finding themselves abandoned

in a deserted theatre, Golding’s legendary characters are brought to life with raw energy, emotional intensity and breathtaking performances. Civilisation crumbles and the rulebook is forgotten as the story builds to an electrifying climax. Chilling, beautiful and hugely entertaining, Lord of the Flies will enthral Bourne fans and inspire a generation of new audiences. www.new-adventures.net/ productions/lord_of_the_ flies

Spurred on by Simone de Beauvoir, Caitlin Moran and the Spice Girls, Vincent goes into battle with the big boys, arguing against a narrow, over-sexualized definition of femininity to ask what it is that we really, really want. On the day of a crunch Old Firm clash, a fan of each team winds up sharing a jail cell from which their only hope of escape is cash raised by bets on the match to pay their fines. While taking turns to watch the action on a TV visible through their cell door, the pair bicker their way through every entrenched cliché of “Scotland’s shame” from religion to politics and national identity. But aided by their kindly turnkey Harry - whose worries for his sick grandson help put their petty quarrels into perspective - they’re forced to reach a grudging understanding. Des Dillon’s brilliant satire of 90-minute bigotry in Scotland and its inextricable connection with the nation’s two biggest football teams first scored critical acclaim at the Fringe in 2005, and has since been a near-constant fixture in theatres in Scotland. www.goldfishtheatre.co.uk

Nielsen – Helios Overture Stravinsky – Jeu de cartes Vaughan Williams – Symphony No.5 Jean-Claude Picard - Conductor At the heart of the firestorm of World War II, Ralph Vaughan Williams looked around him and saw a vision of peace. Serene, spiritual and heartbreakingly beautiful, Vaughan Williams’ Fifth is quite simply one of the finest symphonies ever composed in Britain. Carl Nielsen’s inspiration could barely have been more different: the gentle rise and fall of the sun mirrored in a shimmering blue Aegean Sea. Igor Stravinsky shuffled a deck of cards to devise his playful Jeu de cartes. Listen out for the Kings, Queens and Aces but beware the Joker – he’s wild! Pre–performance talk 19.15

Berlioz Overture: Roman Carnival Schubert Symphony No.8 ‘Unfinished’ Berlioz Harold in Italy

MOZART Symphony in D, KV 203 STRAUSS Duet-Concertino STRAUSS Horn Concerto No 1 MOZART Symphony No 36 ‘Linz’

Antoine Tamestit - viola Matthias Pintscher - conductor Niccolò Paganini wanted a vehicle to show off his new Stradivarius viola. Hector Berlioz gave him the last thing he expected - a flamboyant, Byron-inspired symphony that drives straight to the brooding heart of the Romantic spirit. It’s like nothing else in 19th century music, and the great French viola virtuoso Antoine Tamestit is one of its greatest interpreters. BBC SSO Artist-in-Association Matthias Pintscher brings a composer’s ear to this remarkable score, and pairs it with the two perfectly-poised movements of Schubert’s Unfinished (and some would say unfinishable) Eighth Symphony.

Clemens Schuldt - conductor Maximiliano Martín - clarinet Peter Whelan - bassoon Alec Frank-Gemmill - horn Clemens Schuldt’s Strauss and Mozart is a deeply enjoyable pairing. Strauss’ lyrical outpouring in these two concertos flows with all the natural ease that he admired so much in Mozart. No composer mattered more to him. A home team of three SCO wind principals take the solos superb chamber music on a grand scale. www.sco.org.uk

Medicine is jolly serious, life and death, pain and suffering, pills and needles. But wouldn’t a trip to the doctor or a rush up to A+E be much more fun if it was a game? In his BRAND NEW show, Dr Phil - a practising doctor, campaigning journalist and the first comedian to appear at a public inquiry - turns the whole of medicine into a succession of games for you to play with your doctor*. What’s the diagnosis? What’s the misdiagnosis? Why are you doing that to me doctor? How

long have I got? What are you doing with all our money? And when did you last wash your hands? Learn how to sing your symptoms, sniff a thermometer, diagnose your doctor, arm wrestle for drugs, get past the bearded receptionist and get out of the NHS alive - all through Dr Phil’s highly subversive guerrilla tactics, some of which may be counterproductive. But at least they’re not boring. And you’ll never look at your doctor in quite the same way again. *nurse, receptionist, manager, politician, regulator, lawyer, pancreas www.drphilhammond.com
