RAMBERT DANCE COMPANY : AWAKENINGS TOUR 2011 TUE 22 & WED 23 FEB 2011 | 19.30 EMPIRE THEATRE
WELCOME WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW YEAR AT EDEN COURT. It’s fair to say that the last twelve months have been challenging for many theatres and cultural organisations. Economic uncertainty, political change and pressure on the public purse have meant that many theatres, including Eden Court, have had to make some tough decisions in all areas of the business. That said, 2010 saw record attendances and a huge variety of shows, events, classes and activities – as well as the arrival in Inverness of Doctor Who and his new assistant, played by former Eden Court student and Arts Education Ambassador, Karen Gillan. The programme of entertainment and events we have lined up this spring is nothing short of remarkable. We’ve everything from our side-splittingly funny panto, Beauty and the Beast (P22) to Alice, Scottish Ballet’s stunning interpretation of the Alice in Wonderland story (P10), to brand-new stage versions of Arthur Miller’s classic Death of a Salesman (P07) and the gritty true-life story of Scotland’s hardest inmate, Jimmy Boyle, in The Hard Man (P20). If music is your thing, then we are proud to present the Orquestra Buena Vista Social Club (P06) Love and
Money’s James Grant, and Idlewild front man Roddy Woomble. Comedy fans are in for the funniest spring in years. Not only can you enjoy visits from some of the UK’s most established comics (Sean Hughes, Phil Cool and Mark Thomas – all P26-29) but we also see bright new Scottish stars shining in the shape of Daniel Sloss & Kai Humphries (P26). World-class dance makes a welcome return to the repertoire in this brochure too, with the internationally-renowned Rambert Dance Company (P05) and Jasmin Vardimon (P13) – both bringing exceptional dance to the Highlands. I’d like to thank to each and every one of our customers. I hope you will continue to support Eden Court as enthusiastically in the year ahead as you always have. Best wishes,
Colin Marr Eden Court Director
Rambert really do provide something for everyone DAILY TELEGRAPH
Rambert Dance Company is at the heart of British dance. Following a sell-out season in London in 2010, we welcome the company back to the Highlands with its ravishing new work, Awakenings. Inspired by Oliver Sacks’ book of the same name, Awakenings is a theatrical rollercoaster based on true life stories. With a specially-commissioned score, both passionate and lyrical, the Rambert dancers and orchestra will draw you into this dramatic and spine-tingling new work. Eden Court dance lovers will also be treated to two further works, both brand new to Inverness - Hush by renowned British choreographer Christopher Bruce, and Itzik Galili’s spectacular samba-inspired A Linha Curva. Under the artistic direction of Mark Baldwin, Rambert Dance Company is at the top of its game, having won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance in 2010. The company last visited Eden Court in 2009 with the enchanting Eternal Light, which was one of the highlights of the year. With 22 of the world’s finest dancers and incredible live music from the Rambert Orchestra, Awakenings should be at the top of your New Year to do list. www.rambert.org.uk SEAT PRICES £19.00 / £17.00

By ARTHUR MILLER. Directed by IAN GRIEVE.
Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. He’s not the finest character that ever lived. But he’s a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid. 34 years ago, travelling salesman Willy Loman climbed into his car to chase the American dream: running on hope and ‘riding on a smile and a shoeshine’ into the land of opportunity. Death of a Salesman is the story of Willy Loman’s life, told in one day. Willy, now 63 returns home for the last time to his family - with his memories, his daydreams and a terrible feeling that he might have taken a wrong turn somewhere along the road.
We are delighted to offer Highland audiences a rare chance to experience an evening with true music legends. Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club™ stalwarts combine in a 15 piece band - direct from Havana to present some of the finest Cuban music ever made. In 2011 the band will take you on a musical excursion from the original 1996 Buena Vista Social Club™ recordings (which sold over 7 million copies) to the present day heat of Cuba's clubs and dancehalls. Joining the band for this incredible concert will be Omara Portuondo, a member of the original Buena Vista Social Club™, whose last visit to Eden Court sold out in record time. www.buenavistasocialclub.com

CHOUF OUCHOUF TUES 12 & WED 13 APR 2011 | 19.30 EMPIRE THEATRE Performed by COLLECTIF ACROBATIQUE DE TANGIER Directed by ZIMMERMAN & DE PERROT
Last year we brought the supremely talented performers from Petit Mal to Eden Court – they were one of the highlights of 2010, so we are delighted to be able to present a show which is just as unique, just as spectacular and just as enjoyable. Chouf Ouchouf brings together contemporary performance and traditional Moroccan acrobatics in an explosion of North African culture. Chouf Ouchouf reflects the daily life in the Medina in a witty and highly skilled show for all ages over seven. The Collectif Acrobatique de Tangier collaborate with Swiss artists Zimmerman and de Perrot to capture the danger, joy and urgency of life in Tangiers. The Medina, the old quarter, where it's ten to a house, and a hundred to the narrowest street. Shout or you won't be heard; push to the front or never be seen. Life and colour lies round every corner, animals and cigarette hawkers fill the squares. Dusk falls like a shutter, then the night. Silently the walls open, and amid the maze-like streets and along the rooftops figures move on secret agendas. What, or who, is in the bag? www.zimmermanndeperrot.com French language site

Artistic Director Ashley Page’s spectacular version of Cinderella, one of Scottish Ballet’s most popular productions, returns to Eden Court in January 2011. Tormented by her stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella is lost and lonely, until a simple act of kindness summons her Fairy Godmother who sends her on a magical journey to find happiness.
Scottish Ballet and the creative team behind Cinderella and The Nutcracker present Alice, an extraordinary adventure into the depths of imagination.
With sumptuous designs from the award-winning designer Antony McDonald, Scottish Ballet’s vivid reworking of this much-loved fairytale transports you to a decadent Vivienne Westwood-meetsAndy Warhol 18th Century France. Prepare to be swept up in Prokofiev’s romantic score - performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
Drifting through episodes from Lewis Carroll’s treasured stories, Alice tumbles into a strange world full of fantastical characters, and guided by Carroll himself, she has to rely on her wits to find her way out. Featuring choreography by Artistic Director Ashley Page, otherworldly designs from Antony McDonald and a specially commissioned musical score by Robert Moran, this is an unforgettable take on the most curious of tales.
The exceptional dancers of Scottish Ballet bring unforgettable characters to life with genuine emotion and plenty of wit, making Cinderella a fantastic feast of classical and modern dance as original as it is visually striking.

BY GIUSEPPE VERDI Director Matthew Richardson brings Verdi’s Rigoletto to the stage in a stylish, intelligent and theatrical production.
Rigoletto Gilda
Based on Victor Hugo’s play, Verdi’s opera tells the tragic tale of Rigoletto, a hunch-back jester at the court of the Duke of Mantua, who is forced to find new conquests for his carefree, womanising master. As the web of court intrigue tightens around him, Rigoletto finds himself the victim of a grave curse, but it is his daughter Gilda who is the one to suffer.

From the aching naivety of Gilda’s first love to the Duke’s untroubled revelry and Rigoletto’s tortured realisation of his failure as a father, Verdi takes the characters from elation to despair in an opera densely packed with extraordinary music. English baritone Eddie Wade sings Rigoletto in his debut in the role, and Edgaras Montvidas, (Nemorino in The Elixir of Love), sings the role of the Duke. Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Nadine Livingston brings a fresh innocence to the role of Gilda. Tobias Ringborg, well known to Eden Court’s opera audiences from last year’s Cosi fan tutte, conducts. scottishopera.org.uk

His journey through the ganglands of Glasgow’s East End has taken him from teenage truant to petty criminal to gangster and to prison. The Hard Man is an intense and stylized exploration of notorious gangster turned artist, Jimmy Boyle’s early life and of the cult of male violence on the streets of
Glasgow – a world dominated by struggle and brutality, success and failure, victims and perpetrators. And a world still frighteningly part of Scotland today. This brand new production is the first major revival for over thirty years.
It’s lively, fast-moving, often funny, with much stylised yet horrifying violence. It comes across like a Cagney gangster movie; the resemblance is played to the hilt, and the same doubts are raised 1+

JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH:
DANIEL SLOSS & KAI HUMPHRIES
A MAN WITH NO MORE ROLLS
FRI 28 JAN 2011 | 20.00 ONETOUCH THEATRE
THU 17 MAR 2011 | 20.00 ONETOUCH THEATRE
Fresh from their smash-hit seasons at the Edinburgh fringe, join two of the country’s hottest rising comedy stars for one hilarious night only. Daniel Sloss is Scotland’s youngest comic prodigy. He is a typical half-man-halfXbox, hormone-ridden teenager and he has just turned 20….. He started doing stand-up when he was just 16, was one of the youngest-ever So You Think You’re Funny? finalists, wrote for Frankie Boyle on BBC’s Mock the Week, was the first stand-up on The Paul O’Grady Show and sold-out his first solo Fringe - all before he started shaving. You might have seen Daniel on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, The Rob Brydon Show or 8 Out Of 10 Cats … or maybe you laughed yourself silly during his second Edinburgh fringe season. It might even be that you’ve never seen Daniel before, but believe me, once you’ve experienced Daniel Sloss’ unique take on comedy, you’ll never forget it. Daniel is joined by another fast-rising comedy star, Newcastle’s supremely funny Kai Humphries. A 2009 finalist in
the prestigious So You Think You’re Funny? contest, Kai’s first TV performance was recorded almost exactly one year to the day after he first stood on a stage (in a special for the Comedy Channel alongside Kevin Bridges, Tom Stade and Mike Wilmot). His debut season at the Edinburgh fringe was a huge success and he is in demand all over the country as a comedian and compeer.

"Sheffield's finest synthesizer player and twaddle talker" (Daily Telegraph) decides it's time to instruct the Nation in moral matters. Well, he would have done - had nextdoor neighbour and sole agent, Ken Worthington not mistyped the show's title, turning morals into more rolls... John's reaction to this mishap is philosophical. At least now his new show can consider - not just the Nation's moral decline - but the vast range of exotic breads appearing in the high street, as the humble roll fades into obscurity. Paninis, ciabattas, pittas, plus the peshwari naan which John recently enjoyed a bite of, inspiring his exciting new ballad "How's your nan?" "How's your nan? How's your nan?"
Had the crowd laughing hard with loveable accent, silly stories and exit joke, too rude to print, that had them in stitches
The man who does for the Bontempi organ what Hendrix did for the guitar THE GUARDIAN
is more pressing a question than finding out about the state of an unleavened bread - that's what i said "How's your nan? How's your nan?" Better find out while you can Go and see her before you hear she's dead! John Shuttleworth is an ex-security guard and singer/songwriter from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. He is the official King of the Yamaha and star of Radio 4's The Shuttleworths and BBC2's 500 Bus Stops. He will join us in the Highlands for one night only. step and pursue a career in the arts. Eden Court’s Art Education Department is a great resource for everyone in the Highlands both young and old. If you haven’t tried yet, start participating and get inspired!’

STEPHEN VENABLES: GORDON SMITH
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SHACKLETON
THE PSYCHIC BARBER
TUE 01 FEB 2011 | 19.30 EMPIRE THEATRE In the last ten years, internationally acclaimed mountaineer Stephen Venables has twice repeated Sir Ernest Shackleton’s famous crossing of South Georgia. One of the great epics of exploration, Shackleton’s treacherous expedition to cross Antarctica via the South Pole is a tale of escape and survival more miraculous than any fiction. Forced to set out in search of help after his ship was crushed in the Antarctic ice,
Shackleton voyaged 800 miles across the Southern Ocean. On reaching South Georgia, he and his companions continued on foot with no mountaineering equipment and minimal supplies, crossing thirty miles of unknown, unmapped glacial mountains. They finally reached the whaling station of Stromness where they were able to mount the successful rescue of their remaining 22 companions marooned on board the ship. stephenvenables.com

Here We Are UK This is the story of the 107 houses of Cairndow and the people who lived – and live – in them, their livelihoods and their occupations. It is about the impact of where you live on your life: and on your way of life on your house. Home is more than just bricks and mortar, but building materials, design and outlook affect your home - the sandstone threshold worn to a curve by generations of boots, the creak of the parana pine stair case, the welcoming wood burning stove.

Playing a pair of ideas off against each other can achieve as satisfying a musical menu as you could wish for. Here, Brahms plays Haydn - the grand master of variations form - at his own game before we hear Haydn's long lost cello concerto. Then two great German composers travel south for a taste of Italian song and dance.

When Elgar’s First Symphony was premiered, audience members didn’t wait for the finish – they simply jumped to their feet and cheered mid-performance. 101 years on, it’s still the supreme British symphony, an unforgettably emotional self-portrait of a great artist in a turbulent age. Meanwhile, pianist Simone Dinnerstein’s Bach recordings outsell pop albums – hear why tonight!

In February, the Scottish Ensemble once again works with senior students from RSAMD ‘Side by Side’ in a programme which celebrates the work of British composers. The evening incorporates work from the existing repertoire and introduces the world première of Joe Cutler’s New Work for solo violin, ensemble and electronics. Cutler’s work is the latest in a series of projects which have evolved from the Ensemble’s initial exploration of the electronic sound world during the IRCAM residency in Glasgow. A true Ensemble production, one that is not to be missed.
The final concert of the Scottish Ensemble’s season sees the return of Anthony Marwood as guest director. For some time the Ensemble has been looking to work with Anthony again and when he suggested Orlando Jopling’s arrangement of Schumann’s Cello Concerto for violin and string orchestra, this seemed the perfect ANTHONY MARWOOD opportunity. Morton Gould’s Pulitzer Prize winning Stringmusic is preceded by the youthful Mendelssohn’s final string symphony.

Edwina last visited Eden Court in 2008. Her performance was so well received that we kept asking her to come back. Now she’s found a window in her calendar, we are delighted she is able to make a return to the OneTouch Theatre. Edwina spends most of her time on the road performing her songs to an everincreasing audience of fans. As well as her own gigs, Edwina is often invited to support major artists on tour and over the last few years has opened shows for Van Morrison, Nanci Griffith, Roger McGuinn, Jools Holland and Loudon Wainwright III among many others.

Back after more than a ten year break, Richard Wood is arguably one of the most entertaining and talented fiddlers from the Celtic world, and he has lost none of his fire and zip in the intervening years. Accompanied on guitar, bodhran, and vocal by Gordon Belsher the performance combines the best of jigs, reels and Strathspeys with Richard's own compositions. If ever there was a demonstration as to the high quality of Canadian musicianship then these two lay down the standard for others to follow. For more than two decades, Richard Wood has impressed audiences all across Canada, as well as in the US, Europe, and Japan. Highlights include TV guest appearances with Shania Twain on David Letterman, at the Carnegie Hall with Irish legends The Chieftains.

The story of Die Fledermaus is a tale of revenge, with Dr Falke seeking to settle the score with Eisenstein for a previous joke gone wrong. He gets his revenge in style at a risqué party at the home of the outrageous Russian aristocrat Orlofsky. Through the course of the party there is case after case of mistaken identity. Opera della Luna have earned themselves a matchless reputation, touring the country for over ten years with acclaimed productions of Gilbert and Sullivan and Offenbach, and they now turn their hand to the “waltz king”: Johann Strauss, and this most sparkling of scores.
