WELCOME TO THE EDEN COURT WHAT’S ON SEASON BROCHURE We’ve got a packed season ahead with a huge line up of drama, musicals, comedy, dance and family events. I would normally use this introduction to tell you all about my personal highlights but the brochure is so full that we thought the space would be better used to single out some of the great shows we’ve got coming up in 2015 that we don’t have space to tell you about inside. Further details of these, and all other shows, can be found on our website or by having a chat with our box office staff. I hope you enjoy the season.

Best Wishes

Colin Marr Chief Executive Eden Court

Scottish Ballet brings great text to life this autumn as the stylistic language of American playwright Arthur Miller and Welsh poet Dylan Thomas come together in a powerful study of words in motion. Choreographer Helen Pickett’s world premiere of The Crucible is based on American playwright Arthur Miller’s 1953 Tony awardwinning play. Pickett translates this incredible dramatisation of the Salem witch trials with her inimitable style of dance language. A dancer and choreographer under William Forsyth, and currently Resident Choreographer at Atlanta Ballet, Pickett layers rich, evocative characterisations and lyrical story telling in this first-ever ballet version of Miller’s chilling tale of innocent men and women destroyed by malicious rumours. A UK premiere, Christopher Bruce’s Ten Poems was created for Ballet Keil (Germany) in 2009. Set to a recording of ten Dylan Thomas poems, emotively read by Welsh actor Richard Burton, Ten Poems builds on the melodic rhythm of the famous prose. Bruce, one of Britain’s most prolific and important choreographers, brings each one to life with exquisite little vignettes of story and character. WWW.SCOTTISHBALLET.CO.UK

Choreography: Peter Darrell, featuring original scenarios by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa Music: Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Original Philip Prowse designs reimagined by Lez Brotherston.

Crafted for Scottish Ballet by Peter Darrell, the company’s founding Artistic Director, a famous story teller and incredible dance-maker, this Nutcracker will create magical memories for a new generation. Over forty years after its premier audiences once again have an opportunity to share this production with families and friends. After a fun-filled Christmas party full of magic and celebrations, young Carla falls asleep and dreams that she helps the Nutcracker Prince to defeat an army of giant mice. She is rewarded by a visit to the glittering Land of Ice and Snow where snowflakes come to life, sparkling as they dance, then onwards to the magical Kingdom of Sweets - the enchanted Realm of the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy. Peter Darrell’s magical world of The Nutcracker has been reimagined by Olivier Award winning designer Lez Brotherston, adding sumptuous layers of plush Victoriana and traditional festive fare to the original 1973 production. The Scottish Ballet Orchestra accompanies live, performing the world famous Tchaikovsky score.

SQUISH

Just two guys keeping it real. They come from the street so it’s breakdance…isn’t it? In this case it’s not just B-Boying, but a precisely worked-out balancing act between hiphop and contemporary dance. Tony Mills has redeveloped this dynamic and humorous duet, originally co-created with Matt Foster (David Hughes Dance Productions). Box Fresh will be presented at Internationale Tanzmesse 2014 before the UK tour.

Success, on some level, is important to all of us...but at what cost? Set within the confines of a squash court, this dark, funny and touching solo explores what drives us towards our goals and what we lose during this journey. Squish was presented at Dance Base Fringe 2013 and later redeveloped into a duet; Squish Squared, which toured Scotland as part of the Glasgow 2014 Culture Programme.

This powerful and hugely energetic dance theatre production returns to Eden Court for a one off performance. The dance marathons of Depression-era America, with strict rules, extreme conditions and ferocious competition, were the reality shows of their day. Attracting huge audiences they could last for weeks on end, with competitors stopping for only ten minutes every two hours to sleep or wash. Ten dancers, two actors and a six-piece jazz ensemble bring this drama to life to a soundtrack of songs from the 1930s, performed by soprano Nadine Livingston.

NEW CO-PRODUCTION WITH OPERA NATIONAL DU RHIN Sung in Italian with English supertitles. Based on the famous tale of the triumph of love over malice, this new production is a highly entertaining take on one Rossini’s most popular comedies. Featuring a host of colourful characters, and music that’s bright, breathless and full of energy, the show mixes fairytale fantasy with cruel reality. This is a Cinderella story…but not quite as you may know it. Rossini’s sparkling score demands impressive vocal agility and the best in comedy characterisation. Russian mezzo-soprano Victoria Yarovaya, winner of the 2013 Mercedes Viñas Prize, is Cenerentola, and rising Rossini star Nico Darmanin is Prince Ramiro. The talented ensemble cast also features baritone Richard Burkhard (The Magic Flute 2012), soprano Rebecca Bottone (The Pirates of Penzance 2013) and renowned bass Graeme Danby. Revival of the 2005 production Sung in English with piano accompaniment Scottish Opera’s brooding, atmospheric Macbeth returns in celebration of the 2014 Year of Homecoming. Inspired by events in the wartorn Balkans, Dominic Hill’s production is at once contemporary and ageless; a world of camouflageclad leaders and grungy, chain-smoking witches, where power is all but it comes at a price. Unsettling and full of tension, the drama of Shakespeare’s play is underlined by the brilliance of Verdi’s score. Desperate and furious, at times ethereal and visionary, his music gets to the heart of this powerful story, intensifying the tragedy as Macbeth’s destiny unfolds. The endless sublime melodies of Mozart’s joyful Eine kleine Nachtmusik ensure its enduring popularity, and it’s matched in exquisite tunefulness by Borodin’s Sinfonia for Strings. Written as a love letter to his wife, the work’s third movement takes the form of a Nocturne and is one of his best-loved and instantly recognisable tunes. Chris Guthrie is bound to a harsh farming life by her intense love of the land. She dreams of the seductive yet distant world of books and learning, but when war breaks out, Chris suddenly finds herself facing a very different reality as a widowed, single mother in a land altered beyond recognition. Set in a farming community in the North East of Scotland, Sunset Song charts Chris’s struggle to adapt to her new world and hold together her fragile family. Her survival depends solely on her belief that beyond the sunset lies hope. Marking a hundred years since the start of the First World War, Sell a Door Theatre Company and the Beacon Arts Centre revive Alastair Cording’s faithful adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s classic Sunset Song, recently voted Scotland’s most popular novel of all time. Let’s raise our glasses to long lost loves and current lovers, to mums, to dads and to absent friends. Uninvited Guests stage an event that is somewhere between a wedding reception, a wake and a radio dedication show. We speak of our own and other’s loves – deep, passionate, ambivalent and unrequited – and dedicate songs to them. If you are joining us on this happy occasion, you can send a dedication to someone you love to info@uninvited-guests.net by Tues 21 Oct 2014.

In the thrilling tradition of M R James and Edgar Allan Poe, this literary spine-chiller celebrates three lost gothic works from the great Victorian female writers.

Your letters of love may become part of the show, romantic gestures or signs of friendship, shared publicly between us.

Adapted and performed by Rebecca Vaughan (Austen’s Women, I, Elizabeth). Directed by Olivier Award Winner, Guy Masterson (Morecambe).

Authentic old Country, done afresh. THE TELEGRAPH

The new Emmylou Harris. NETRHYTHMS (UK)

She could emerge as this decade’s Gillian Welch with a sound and style that could have much wider appeal.

Zoe Muth has the authentic honky tonk aura of Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline in her voice.
