AN OVERVIEW - ABOUT THE SECTOR
FACTS AND STATS •
WHAT ARE CLINICAL COMMISSIONING GROUPS? Since the Health and Social Care Act 2012 and the abolishment of primary care trusts, the responsibility of organising and delivering services for the NHS in England has been in the hands of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) – clinically-led groups who work alongside a governing board. The purpose of these groups, made up of GPs, registered nurses and secondary care specialists, is to commission most of the hospital and community NHS services in the local areas for which they’re responsible.
THE DECISION MAKERS It’s increasingly important to engage with CCGs and be in the minds of commissioners, because CCGs continue to gain in power and responsibility – in November 2014 CCGs were invited to become co-commissioners of primary care in their areas. The majority of CCGs have already signed up to co-commission and the rest are expected to follow suit, making them responsible for the performance management and budgets of their member GP practices.

ABOUT THE AUDIENCE Commissioning Success (CS) goes out to anyone responsible for commissioning NHS healthcare, including clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), commissioning support units (CSUs) and those with a vested interest in
the current health agenda – including providers with a vested interest in tendering for contracts. It focuses on the delivery and management of healthcare commissioning in an ever-changing healthcare landscape.
W H AT W E D O F O R T H E M Commissioning Success offers readers the must-have tips, tools and knowledge they need to make a success of clinically-led commissioning. We provide relevant, up-todate information in the form of case studies, interviews, in-depth analysis, features and news tailored to meet the needs of commissioners, and deliver this across a range of media so that readers can choose how to receive and digest our content.
LEADING WITH A MANAGEMENT AGENDA, NOT A CLINICAL ONE As a magazine, we’re not here to explain to the commissioners what specific medical conditions mean for the patients, and how they should be treated in detail – they’ll know this already, and besides, there are medical journals for that – we’re here to inform them of the clinical priorities that commissioning groups are targeting across the country and help them with the logistics of implementing services that will help achieve these goals. This helps commissioners – whether they’re GPs or managers – make informed decisions about the healthcare of their communities with the budgets they hold. Topics leading the agenda at the moment include: • The use of data for determining risk and reducing admissions to A&E
• Pilots and initiatives to protect the elderly and vulnerable • Preventive solutions for conditions such as type 2 diabetes • Legal complications, including potential conflicts of interest • Co-commissioning and delegated commissioning of primary care services • Managing co-morbidities and long-term, chronic conditions, such as asthma • Creating a joined-up, consolidated map of healthcare that is simple for the population to navigate • Encouraging populations to take greater control of their own health
NOT A COMMISSIONER? Interested from the sidelines? We’ve got something for you too. Commissioning Success is a must-read for medical providers or anyone with an interest in commissioning. The magazine will help readers to stay one step ahead of the decisions made by those who hold the NHS purse strings and make decisions that affect the entire population.
“IT IS A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN CCGS… AND IT’S A CRITICAL STEP TOWARDS JOINING UP THE COMMISSIONING SYSTEM, WHICH IN TURN WILL HELP UNLOCK NEW MODELS OF INTEGRATED CARE DESCRIBED IN THE NHS FIVE YEAR FORWARD VIEW” Ian Dodge, national director for commissioning strategy at NHS England
