When God Shows Up on Earth From the Heart BY ALAN COHEN I AM A BIG BEATLES FAN. The more I hear their music, the more I recognize the sheer genius behind it. I saw a rare YouTube video of an especially vibrant 1964 Beatles concert in Australia at the height of Beatlemania (“Beatles Live— Australia”).One comment on the YouTube page struck me: “I’m a solid atheist. But I swear John, Paul & George (still Love U Ringo!) were slapped on the back by a Higher Power. How does it happen that 3 of the most incredible songwriters ever just come from nowhere? If I meet God, and I tell Him He didn’t give me enough information to believe, God might say, ‘I gave you proof: the sun, the Earth, and The Beatles.’” The writer is far from an atheist. He or she recognizes the presence of God in the world through the Beatles. God manifests divinity by way of people. We are the windows through which heaven shines into the world. The Beatles, talented as they were, did not give themselves their talent. It was seeded within them by a Force far beyond their human personalities. Their role was to bring it to a waiting world, which they did masterfully. Those talented musicians served as vessels through which the Creator delivered huge gifts to make the world a better place. During this season many people celebrate God showing up on Earth. Christians remember the birth of Jesus Christ. Jewish people observe Hanukah, when God miraculously extended light to beleaguered freedom fighters. Hindus enjoy Diwali, and people of African descent observe Kwanzaa. All of these holidays recognize that for a moment in time, God reached into the world and lifted it closer to heaven. The same God that blessed the world through Jesus, the Beatles, and other visionaries wants to bless the world through you. You have talents that no one else can bestow. But you have to honor your inspiration enough to deliver your gifts. The only difference between great THE EDGE MAGAZINE 763.433.9291 P.O. people and mediocre people is that great people trust and act on their guidance. The German philosopher Goethe said, “As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live.” A turning point in my career came when I was about to lead a weekend seminar. Until that time I went into my programs doubting my abilities, wondering if I was qualified, questioning my decisions. At the outset of that seminar I decided to do an experiment: I would imagine that any intuition I had about where to take the program was guided by a Higher Power. I would not judge my choices. Instead I would envision that I was working in co-creation with an intelligence that knew how to create the best possible program. The results were phenomenal! The seminar turned out to be the most successful I had ever done, and I enjoyed myself far more than I had when I doubted my decisions. Certain talents are unexplainable except as intervention by a Higher Source. Mozart wrote his first opera at the age of 6. He later stated, “It is when I am, as it were, completely myself, entirely alone, and of good cheer…that ideas flow best and most abundantly. Whence and how they come, I know not, nor can I force them.” Genius inventor Nikola Tesla explained that

his ideas came to him in a flash, from a source beyond this world. He would then work them out in his mind such that the inventions were complete before he even reached his laboratory to construct them. Beethoven wrote many of his greatest compositions when his physical ears were essentially deaf. A Course in Miracles Lesson 353 asks us to affirm, “My eyes, my tongue, my hands, my feet today have but one purpose; to be given Christ to use to bless the world with miracles.” You don’t have to be a Christian, or any religion, to put this vision into action. You just have to live true to your passionate purpose. Every day we have a thousand opportunities to help God show up in the world. To let someone into a traffic lane when you could speed ahead. To phone a friend who is hurting and say, “I just want you to know I’ve been thinking about you and I’m on your team.” To publish your book or song or start your business, trusting you will reach the right people who can benefit from it. World change agents are so focused on giving life to their visions that they pay no attention to naysayers, within or without. If Steven Spielberg, Steve Jobs or Barack Obama had denied their gifts expression, the world would be emptier for it. You don’t need to be a Spielberg, Jobs or Obama. Just quit comparing yourself to others and finding reasons you can’t. What is within you must come forth. Live true to your visions, knowing that you did your part to make the world a little more like heaven. When you do, you will look forward to getting up in the morning, your heart will be at peace, you will sleep well, and one day some not-so-solid atheist will say, “I now see proof that there is a God, after all.” a ALAN COHEN is the bestselling author of A Course in Miracles Made Easy. These spiritual travels delighted the author because in this way she found a connection with her father after he died. By using an earnest and special meditation, frequent links with the ethereal were established. Memorable quotes came from these visitations., such as: “If you can’t trust God, who can you trust?” The details of varied excursions in the spirit world are simple examples of the joy of trusting. Their experiences in what “seems a lot like heaven” produced wonderment. What do you call the firmament where Earth souls and Spirit souls meet? The author never gave it a name but the intrinsic nature of this dimension seemed to be a peculiar personal paradise. Another quote that was particularly sweet but yet startling, “God never was picky about who He had working for Him.” The refreshing familiarity with Spirit led to an awareness of being in a friendly space. Fear of death and fear in general had vanished. Seeing the Spirit as a friend and a protector was a secondary benefit from this book. It may be subtle, but all of the fun little Spirit escapades ended up leaving one feeling eternally alive in a creative and loving universe. Author Sandra Marian has been communicating with the spirit world intermittently for over 35 years. The Guide, which she had known for many years before her father passed, returned again for some of these sessions. She had not seen him for quite a while and she was taken with how he had grown in power. He embodied faith as an energy, an energy that can come to all. The author also beckoned everyone

Supporting the New Year’s Shift A Pleiadian Message BY CHRISTINE DAY BELOVED ONES, WE GREET YOU. There is an ongoing intensification of pure consciousness light entering your planet and this is designed to generate a powerful shift within the dimensional grids on the Earth. The energetic magnetic core is about to change its vibrational pulse at the moment of the New Year and this will dramatically alter the energetic landscape of Earth. This is a time of preparation for the planet and for you as the New Year approaches. This happening will herald in a complete and significant reality change as this cosmic energy births an electromagnetic realignment throughout Earth. This entire process will initiate permanent, eternal changes to the restrictive timelines within Earth — altering forever its frequency, which has held the Earth plane firmly within a third-dimensional illusion. These dramatic changes forge open a gateway on Earth, allowing you to utilize a reconnection to the Higher Realm components of Self. INSTANTANEOUS BIRTHING When the electromagnetic energy anchors, there will be an instantaneous birthing of this cosmic umbilical cord. The picture is a pathway uniting heaven and Earth, spreading a divine energy of purity throughout the Earth plane. This opening, this moment of creation, will be instrumental in you regaining the ability to move up and down between the worlds via this sacred naturally reopened pathway. You are being prepared energetically within your cells to accommodate this monumental shift that will soon engulf your environment on Earth. These energetic preparations are creating a constant disorientation within your senses as your systems go through a series of complete resets, moving you into another phase of your energetic transmutation. Now you are being made ready, and will continue to be experiencing an increasing sense of unfamiliarity within your senses. This process results in you feeling a lot of confusion and unexpected events happening within your current environment in your third-dimensional day-to-day life. That which was familiar is no longer in existence within your experience. Stability at this juncture will only be accessible through your multidimensional heart center. Connection to your heart will re-establish a continuous state of equilibrium and inner guidance within you through this time. Your heart cells recognize this frequency of awakening that is currently birthing. 8  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

Your heart remembers and knows this vibrational flow, and it will automatically open and make adjustments within you as these ever-increasing multidimensional adjustments occur throughout the Earth plane. Your heart will continue to make further dimensional adjustments within you in response to this illumination process, and this will be sustained through your heart connection.

TIME TO LET GO This is your time to let go on another level and allow the vast guidance of your heart to move and reposition you forward through this unfamiliar terrain. This is your time to gain a significant reinstatement of your abilities as you unite within the multidimensional nature of your heart. As you move closer to the New Year time frame, your disorientation within the third-dimensional illusion will accelerate. As the Earth’s rotation aligns to a different dimensional element in relationship to the sun, there will be an acceleration of light resonance entering Earth. The sun’s consciousness has an enormous part to play, and your heart cells resonate with the brilliant essence of the sun’s rays. Allow an unfolding of this process by bringing your conscious awareness to engage with the sun’s consciousness. This is the direct action of you participating in your own multidimensional rebirth. Your planet’s magnetic core pulse is going to increase as the rotation of the Earth opens into a higher dimensional vibrational light phase with the sun. The sun is holding a mirror to your planet, which sets in motion a metamorphic change within the magnetic core. You need to be simultaneously working within the essence of the sun through the cells of your multidimensional heart. Know that a new variance is about to be revealed on Earth at the very moment of New Year. This is the “next step” aspect of the New Dawning, which is being anchored now throughout your planet and throughout the New Year time frame. This is a moment for celebration as a new higher order is set in place, in motion within humanity! This happening can be likened to the sun raising itself for the first time over Earth, shedding a light, an illumination into the darkened, denser areas on your planet for the first time. NOT ALONE What is essential for you to know is you are not alone during this transition. You can call forth the sacred pre-agreement alliances that you set in motion before you came into this incarnation. You require this support

right now at this pivotal time to play your role out to its fullest potential. You do not need to remember who these pre-agreements are with, simply know that you, your Higher Self, set these pre-agreements in motion for your highest good at this juncture to be utilized now. Know that you have a significant part to play at this unique time in the history of Earth. You need to prepare for this happening by working within your heart and activating the support teams that await you. As you create a strong, anchored alignment within your heart, you will be prepared and aligned energetically to fully utilize the frequencies opening up at this sacred time of New Year. Let go and be within your heart, and build this alignment channel to receive. At this sacred moment of New Year an electromagnetic energy will descend on Earth, creating a higher element of divine love, through which you will be able to align with your heart center. This opening will enable you to realign to your own healing and life purpose. You will be held within the frequency creation of a new power center, which anchors on Earth at that moment. Through these series of electromagnetic openings there will be layers of birthed vortexes, each carrying this new frequency imprint of consciousness. These vortexes will interact within the sacred sites, creating a form of golden webbing between the sacred sites across your Earth plane. You will naturally have full access through your heart to engage and utilize the pathways to the Higher Realm components of Self within this web. This will allow for a dynamic personal change within you. Through the conscious choice action of you reaching within your heart, there is a shift with the old third-dimensional veils lifting, revealing Higher Realm reconnections, supporting all of humanity forging a new imprint at this time. The work you do consciously in this reconnection will ripple out across the whole planet. Those of you who are committed to your path create a forging of the sacred multidimensional framework here on Earth. You are being called, summoned forth at this time. This calling is based on the pre-agreements you have made prior to coming here in this incarnation to fulfill this aspect of your mission. This next phase on your planet promises to be a magical adventure leading you to an exhilarating journey of a self-manifestation of monumental proportions. At this juncture, your Higher Self is urging you to remember your purpose and innate gifts through the reconnection to your multi➤ see NEW YEAR’S SHIFT on p. 10

NEW YEAR’S SHIFT

continued from p. 8

dimensional heart. Allow yourself to be guided by your heart and play your part of this at this enlightened sacred time. We offer you two separate processes to support you during this transitional happening.

1. TO BE DONE LEADING UP TO THE TIME OF THE NEW YEAR: The conscious breath is going to be an essential element in your rebirthing, reconnection process. This breath is in and out of the mouth and must be used during the entire process. Remember the conscious breath says, “Yes, I am willing to let go” and “Yes, I am willing to receive my light.” The Conscious breath allows you to bypass the ego mind and allows old dense energies to leave the body. Bring both your palms to rest on your heart center, which is your entire chest area. Bring your awareness and conscious breath into where you feel your hands physically connecting to your chest/heart space. Open your awareness deeper into the space within your heart, which is opening up. You may see, sense or feel this opening. Place your conscious breath, like a soft wind, into your heart space. Remember, this is a multidimensional space so it could feel like a huge space, or could feel like there is movement, fluidity or something completely different. Be with what is presenting. Use the conscious breath again and feel yourself align deeper and then open up your awareness within the space that is revealing itself. This is your heart space. Claim this with your conscious breath! Now bring the sound, ANTAY ENNN. Bring it right into the space. Feel your unique sound being received by your heart cells. They recognize the frequency of your sound and will begin to open up on another level. Continue to bring in the sound, ANTAY ENNN, through the space — feeling, seeing or sensing the opening until it feels complete for now. Each time you complete this process, your heart is being enlivened is readiness for the New Year shift. You are consciously participating in your own awakening. Know that you can call us, the Pleiadians, forward to support you during this process and you can call forth your pre-agreements to assist you further. 2. PART ONE — TO BE DONE THE MORNING OF DECEMBER 31 (Note: you will be working with the Conscious breath during this entire process): Bring both your palms to rest on your heart center, which is your entire chest area. Bring your awareness and conscious breath into where you feel your hands physically 1 0  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

connecting to your chest/heart space. Open your awareness deeper into the space within your heart, which is opening up. You may see, sense or feel this opening. Place your conscious breath, like a soft wind, into your heart space. Remember, this is a multidimensional space so it could feel like a huge space, or could feel like there is movement, fluidity or something different. Be with what is presenting. Gently lift both your hands away from the heart, and as you do a veil will begin to be lifted off your heart. Bring your awareness into the space that is opening between your hands and your heart. Now you will place the sound within the space, EETAHN ASETAY (pronounced eetarn asset ay). Feel the space expand out and utilize the sound until the space is wide open. Now gently bring both your hands back on the physical chest and begin to bring the sound, EETAHN ASETAY, into your heart cells, utilizing the conscious breath and aligning deeply within the space.

PART TWO — TO BE DONE AT NEW YEAR, MIDNIGHT: Bring both your palms to rest on your heart center. Bring your awareness and conscious breath into where you feel your hands physically connecting to your chest/heart space. It is essential to simply let go with the conscious breath. Claim your heart. Place your conscious breath, like a soft wind, into your heart space. Bring in the sound, ARNDAH, like a call of your unique divine frequency. You are going to create an echo with your unique sound. Build the sound allowing it to open through you. This sound creates the opening to the new frequency pathway that has anchored on the planet. Feel yourself being received through your sound, recognized by the Higher Realms! Keep letting go and allow this reconnection through you. Each time you utilize this process during the following week, you will be adjusted and realigned to the higher consciousness light on your planet. Your own sacred frequencies will be adjusted within your physical cells. You can call us forward every time you utilize this process and know that “you are who you have been waiting for!” Blessings, The Pleiadians. a CHRISTINE DAY is a leading spiritual teacher, healer, channel and author. DECEMBER HOROSCOPE

Conscious Decade Change Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac BY HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS THE STARS ENCOURAGE our personal life to flow smoothly and efficiently this month. The vibe is competent and winter solstice brings a twinkle to the eye as we wrap up this decade. But major political and cultural shifts come to a head over the next three months as Jupiter enters competent Capricorn as the month begins and Saturn and Pluto close in on an exact conjunction in January. Expect political and personal contests around who’s in charge, how power is used, and what really brings security. This aspect calls us to renovate how we do business to integrate our practical work with our spiritual and philosophical perspectives. We need to walk our talk into the next decade. As December begins, old resentments and retribution simmer, but we don’t have to get caught by them with Mercury and Mars in focused Scorpio. Mercury enters forgiving, upbeat Sagittarius on December 9 and brings seasonal cheer, but we may need to speak up and clear the air. Track packages, communiqués and travel carefully December 18-21 as Mercury squares Neptune. Venus enters communal Aquarius on December 19, warming our hearts to the great collective. Winter solstice at 9:19 p.m. December 21, brings us back to family traditions. A solar eclipse December 25 encourages us to start the next decade thoughtfully. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Stay alert at work; do not buy into ongoing power struggles in your environment, but do stay on target with what you authentically know and can pursue. If you have unexpected free time, give it purpose. Take advantage of an opening or opportunity December 9 and 21. Then take a deep breath. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…This month brings a sharp learning curve; it’s time to let your world expand. Take every opportunity to engage a new experience, foreign culture or diverse approach; you’ll

utilize the information to handle unexpected changes in the year ahead. Gemini (May 21-June 20)… Honor boundaries, and hold your property and psychic space cleanly; good walls make good neighbors. The first week may include some frustratingly stubborn people, but tension softens after December 9. Watch for confusion and misunderstandings December 18-20 and enjoy ingenuity towards New Year’s. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…If old scar tissue that complicated earlier relationships twinges as the month begins, instead of nursing resentment, use it as a chance to clear and open the way for a fresh approach to intimacy in the year ahead. Be in charge of your healing. Nurture sweetness as the year closes. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Your daily habits, health and issues with coworkers need attention in early December; clear the decks and create more room for joy. New lightness and sociability flows after December 9. Make new connections mid-December and, while still nurturing relationships, prioritize self-care over the holidays. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Make sure to finish work, don’t get too distracted by the many small pots cooking on the stove, but don’t stop there. Get cozy with art supplies, craft the night away as much for personal therapy as for winter solstice projects. In the process, reimagine the new year ahead. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Review family traditions, revel in what feeds you, and unravel karmic knots even if uncomfortable, but don’t enmesh in old dysfunctional patterns. Enjoy extra access to imagination December 3-8. December 13, track important things and people carefully. Appreciate a fresh breath of community after December 19. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)… Resentments float up to be released, like bad splinters; make the necessary changes so they don’t come back again. Take

responsibility for your joy. Look for opportunities hidden in challenges mid-month. Keep your priorities clear, and therefore others are reassured, December 21-25. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)… It’s your season! Shine but be careful not to get too obnoxiously outgoing December 15-21; be open but responsive to others’ feelings. To prepare for the new year, assess material resources, money and stuff; pare down inessentials and focus on what can grow your life in a healthy direction. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)… Have patience and pace yourself, for this month may feel like a like a marathon. Your life has the opportunity to pivot towards freedom this winter, but whether through loss or through success is up to you. Complete projects December 19-22, be kind to yourself December 24-26, and scope out possibilities December 27-30. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)… Liberate dusty corners of your psyche, let spirit in, and gain faith in the process as Jupiter enters your solar 12th house. Affirm: ‘I am listening, I am heard’ A Monthly Affirmation BY CHARLOTTE “MAMA” ROSE THERE IS A SPIRIT WITHIN each of us that animates our flesh, inspires our action and magnetizes thoughts into the space that is our “mind.” This month I invite you to use the affirmation, “I am listening, I am heard” to free any and all blocks that you have to creating freely. Your mind is an open space. A prairie field where many things, and many thoughts, have grown and burned. Where some roots remain deeply hidden, some flowers show their color and some patiently

await their divinely timed bloom. It is in this space that we find patterns. The movement and relationship between our thoughts and feelings are brought to our awareness here. When we are listening we can hear the voice of our spirit as it directs each facet of our inner landscape. When we are listening we are guided to speak. When we speak we are always heard, always received. The most common block we find to creating the energies in our lives that we desire to play in is the idea that when we speak, we are not being heard. Awareness functions as a feedback loop. We say something and awareness returns it

Sexual Abuse Within Spiritual Communities — The Energetic Impact Looking at spiritual disillusionment and sexual trauma through the lens of the chakras BY

LISA ERICKSON

BEYOND THE HEADLINE STORIES of the #MeToo movement has been a less publicized but equally powerful reckoning within religious and spiritual organizations. From Catholicism to Tibetan Buddhism, Sufism to yoga, spiritual leaders have been brought to task for their abusive behavior, particularly sexual abuse. While all sexual trauma can have a devastating impact on survivors, those who experience it at the hands of spiritual leaders often experience a double wounding, because the very tools and beliefs they might have drawn upon to help them heal are thrown into doubt. This kind of disillusionment has a profound impact on the entire subtle body. In many cases, this disillusionment extends to all in a community, not only the direct victims. Consider the case of Claudia (name changed for privacy), a yoga and meditation studio owner who had been one of the first Western students of her well-known Indian guru. When serious sexual abuse accusations were brought against him, at first she had trouble accepting their validity. But as more and more women came forward, including some she had known for years, she had to face the reality of what had occurred. She fell into a deep depression, questioning all her life had been founded upon. She felt simultaneously duped and guilty, for many women she had known for years had not confided in her, because of her closeness to the teacher. She blamed herself for ignoring red flags and considered closing her studio and even ending her association with yoga altogether. Without this foundation, Claudia didn’t know who she was anymore, and the tools that had sustained her through so many other difficulties in her life — her yoga and meditation — now felt tainted. Claudia’s experience is typical for spiritual community members in the aftermath of abuse allegations. It becomes difficult for survivors and other community members to separate the trauma they have experienced from the spiritual teachings and practices they have received. back to us so we may hear our own voice. We see our own voice as it manifests into thoughts, emotions and circumstances, telling us more and more about our experience, our desires and our needs. Our greatest need in this life is to be heard. To be heard is to be accepted for who we truly are and to be accepted is to be loved. Love is available to us in all moments, for the one moment is the essence of who we are. To be heard is to accept the moment as it is. From the space of “acceptance,” “passive awareness” or “receptivity,” we are able to cultivate strength so that it may inspire and ➤

disillusionment is far-reaching because it strikes simultaneously at the root, heart and crown chakras – the base, center and top of the primary subtle body. While counseling and many holistic modalities may be helpful to someone working through these issues, chakra work can be a great support because it addresses both the emotional and spiritual issues involved. Here is an overview of how each of these key chakras may be impacted and how an individual might work with them: • Root/First Chakra — The root chakra is impacted by almost all sexual trauma, because a sense of trust and safety has been shattered. A survivor’s underlying value system has been thrown into doubt — our psyches and energy body rest upon a foundation of values and beliefs, and spiritual disillusionment damages this foundation. It’s important to focus on trauma-informed healing modalities and practices that rebuild a sense of safety, particularly in the body. Finding ways to work with the elements, nature, somatic healing, and trauma-sensitive body work will all be especially beneficial. • Back of Heart Chakra — While the front of our heart chakra is our relational center and connects us to our human support system, the back connects us to our spiritual support. How we experience spiritual support varies according to our religious or spiritual framework — some of us sense guardians, angels, deities or guides, while others experience a more abstract connection to, or integration with, a larger force. When we experience spiritual disillusionment or doubt, we feel spiritually unprotected and unsupported. It’s important to identify this feeling and focus on experiences, individuals and healing systems that increase a sense of energetic and divine support and protection. Visualizing light coming into the back of heart can help to open up an individual’s awareness of the support and protection they do have on many levels. • Crown Chakra — Our crown chakra is where our energetic link to our religious or spiritual tradition is held. Through our crown chakra we receive and process teachings, realizations, transmissions, empowerments and initiations (including things like baptisms and confirmations). A blocked crown is associated with intense spiritual doubt and disillusionment. As with the back of the heart chakra, an abuse survivor can augment their healing process by picturing a gentle golden light at the top back part of their head, or by engaging with a longer crown chakra meditation. Working with the crown energetically helps an individual connect directly with spirit and spiritual planes, rather than doing so solely through the mediumship or conduitship of a teacher or tradition. Too often, abuse has been enabled through dependency or ➤ see ENERGETIC IMPACT on p. 14

mobilize us toward opportunities to express our truth in more and more fullness. With more and more colors, textures and tones. Use the affirmation, “I am speaking, I am heard” to remind yourself that every prayer you send is answered in awareness and returns your power to you. We have the opportunity to choose, in each moment, where we put our focus. This is our true power. Just as when we relax our gaze we include the whole scene within the scope of our vision, we can choose to relax our focus to include more information in our awareness. In other words, to hear more of our spirit. “I am listening.” We expand our awareness. With this expansion we see patterns, and they cease if they do not align with our intention. Our intention is to create love, to create safety, to create stability, to create security, to create fun and joy and freedom. We intend to create opportunities to share ourselves freely so that our gifts may be received and both heal and inspire those around us to live as we do, in the flow. With our expanded awareness we see our intentions, and we naturally clear the fears that have curbed them to create reflections in our lives of what is unhealed — the parts of our experience that have yet to be seen and accepted. We see the

process of manifestation and master it in our state of exalted being. We say, “I am heard.” This balance is our birthright. We all deserve to have our needs met, to manifest the security and support needed to share our truth and be both nourished and nourishing to those around us simultaneously. Remember, there is a place for you here. There is community that awaits your unique expression of the whole. You have never been separate, although you may have felt alone. You are being called now to come home to your body, to feel, to allow your thoughts to be and move and transform and inform your system. This is your permission to relax. It a permission you will hear in your own voice when you listen and you’ll realize, “I am listening, I am heard.” Relax now and find your spirit, the compass and infinite energy source that never leaves you and is always armed with the support you need to be you. a CHARLOTTE “MAMA” ROSE is an artist, psychic and mother of two based in St. Paul, MN. hierarchies within an organization that cause participants to internalize the idea that their spiritual growth must be facilitated rather than direct. Activating the crown chakra is part of reclaiming direct spiritual connection. As with all energetic transformation work, when we engage with it we are linked into larger shifts occurring around us. The intensity of focus on sexual abuse right now, and the surfacing of the cultural and institutional shadows that have perpetuated it, are part of a painful but necessary purge. Change needs to occur within every type of institution, including religious and spiritual ones. Some institutions will not survive, and all will be changed forever. The prevalence of these scandals raises a lot of big questions about the role of religious and spiritual traditions in today’s society. Are they dinosaurs? Can they adapt? Can the value and power of the teachings be preserved if they are? Should they be? These are all contemplations that will drive deeper energetic shifts as we grapple within society to answer them. As for individuals working through these issues themselves, many find that while painful, the journey through them actually deepens and strengthens their spiritual connectivity and faith. Claudia, for example, went through a long and uncomfortable process of sorting through her history with yoga and her former teacher and lineage. While doing so she incorporated chakra work on her subtle body level to rebuild her energetic foundation. She reclaimed for herself those practices and beliefs that were truly in alignment with her deepest held values. She came to realize the ways her own direct spiritual connection had been clouded by her dependency on her teacher. By connecting directly, the teachings and practices became hers, rather than being “loaned” through her relationship with the yoga lineage. This empowered her as both a person and a teacher, and today she is thriving in both domains. a LISA ERICKSON is a trauma-informed energy worker specializing in women’s energetics and sexual trauma healing, and the author of Chakra Empowerment for Women: Self-Guided Techniques for Healing Trauma, Owning Your Power & Finding Overall Wellness from Llewellyn Publishing. A Commitment to Increasing Intimacy DENISE WIESNER IMMEDIATELY WHEN I use the word intimacy you might think of sex. But looking at the definition of intimacy — closeness, togetherness, affinity, rapport, attachment, familiarity, friendliness, friendship, amity, affection, warmth, confidence — you can see sex is not included. Why? Because you can have sex without intimacy. But truly, in my experience, the best sex is when there is a deep closeness with a partner. We all long to connect, to belong, to give and to receive love whether we are in a relationship or not. But to do this we must begin to cultivate intimacy. Like Chinese medicine and the balance of yin and yang, our lives will be best served if we seek both global and personal intimacy. This means tuning in to and taking action in our world (yang), while making sure to spend time with people in person where we can see, touch, feel, and receive energy (yin). This all stems from being intimate with ourselves — loving ourselves just the way we are. Many of the activities I enjoy are in part because of the connection with others. My annual retreat to Maui is not just because of the wonderful spiritual speakers and teachers, but because of the people: my Satsang, a group of like-minded people getting together for a spiritual practice. In Hinduism, Satsang means a sacred gathering for truth where there might be spiritual discourse, chanting, dancing and meditation. In my Buddhist community this is called a Sangha. By doing more inquiry, I found that one could purchase a “sangha in a box,” a starter kit of sorts that comes with a DVD practice, BY

chants, songs and a picture of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist. In Buddhism the idea of practicing in a community is essential because our practice is not just about ourselves but for the benefit of everyone; in that tradition, the self and the other are all part of the one. At first, I did not understand why it was beneficial to meditate with a group of people, especially because it is such an internal process. Later, I realized that there is power and energy in the collective; it is the intimacy of being able to share in an experience together. I believe it is the same in many religions where people gather to have an intimate relationship with God. Maribai Bush, one of my teachers, has us do a practice that is called “ just like me.” In this practice, we are facing a partner with our eyes shut and she is reading from a list of human experiences. For example she would say, “This person has at some point been sad, disappointed, angry or hurt, just like me.” When I did it with my partner on retreat, I felt intimacy and compassion even though my eyes were shut because, in that very moment, I sensed and felt that we were not different, my partner and I. And even with different spiritual and religious beliefs, because of the internet we can now feel connected to our brothers and sisters around the globe. When I see videos of atrocities in different parts of the world, it isn’t hard for my heart to bleed for these people for, after all, we are all part of the human condition. The videos feel so real and intimate; an up close and personal snapshot of a person’s life. Truly, this empathic experience is part

of my global intimacy, but it lacks the personal intimacy I also need. I long for touch and an oxytocin boost. Oxytocin is a naturally occurring hormone that is made in the hypothalamus and is stored and released by the posterior pituitary gland in the brain. When released, it produces a feeling of love and satisfaction. It is the primary hormone released during an orgasm and one can get it from a 20-second hug. Knowing we, as humans, crave intimacy and are chemically wired for pleasure, what gets in our way? Part of the difficulty in creating intimacy in this day and age is the endless to-do list, the stress that seems to affect most everyone, and not having enough time. Worry about having enough money, worry about children, worry about trying to conceive, worry about health, worry about work, and worry about worry all occupies space in a person’s life that makes the mind restless and the body agitated. And another impediment to true intimacy is the reliance on social media. Take any trip to a restaurant or coffee shop and you find people only involved in their cell phones. One Valentine’s evening when at a restaurant, I saw a couple across from each other each buried in their cell phones. Sometimes just the mere act of looking into each other’s eyes is the most intimate one can get. But to have a connection with another, we must first love ourselves. This is the deepest intimacy. Not when we have what we want, not when we lose five pounds, not when we become a wife, husband, father or mother, not when we wear makeup, not when we dress up, not when we make a billion dollars — right now. This year, I am committed to having more intimacy. How am I going to do this? These are my steps: • Make dates with people I care about for coffee, tea or dinner — This is the time I will make eye contact and listen from the deepest place in my heart to their stories, their lives and their emotions. I will practice the “ just like me” exercise where I don’t try to fIx them but will open my heart and listen. • Take time off the to-do list and engage in intimate exercises with my beloved — This might mean heading off into nature, cuddling, taking a bath, massaging each other, or just do a simple naked full-body hug. And if this isn’t enough, I will have each of us make a list of

something we want to try out. It could mean a new sexual toy or it could mean a trip to the hot springs. • Playing more games with friends — Yes, the good old fashioned board games. They make so many cool ones now! • My favorite suggestion that one of my patients has is the “surprise date night” — In this date, one partner plans a surprise night for the other. The rules are that the partner gets to find out what the other person likes to do beforehand and then chooses to surprise them with an outing. • Be intimate with myself — Practicing Metta: mindfulness. May I be healthy, may I be happy, may I live with ease…and then being able to offer that to others, to my family and to the world. Taking time to take care of my body, mind and spirit. • Getting a pet — When my bird passed away there was an emptiness in my household. According to Heartmath, unconditional love from animals can slow down our heart rhythms in a very beneficial way. • Investigate how to give more to my community, volunteer my time to help others, and take a stand toward a social condition I am passionate about — When our family fed the homeless, I remember how my problems became small and my heart became big. • Practice Soul-gazing — I will look in the mirror to see the beauty and glow in my eyes. I won’t judge. I will notice the inner critic. I will see the beauty that is me beyond my physical body. Now, with enough practice, I will lovingly gaze at another person. I will see the beauty that is theirs. I will see their beauty beyond their physical body and circumstances. How will you create more intimacy for yourself, your community and your family? a DENISE WIESNER, LAc., DIPL. Laughter Breaks Trauma’s Grim Spell BY JAMES S. GORDON, M.D. An excerpt from The Transformation

READER’S DIGEST USED to tell us each month that “laughter is the best medicine.” Drawing on folk wisdom, the Digest was reminding us that laughter could help us through the ordinary, daily unhappiness that might come into our lives. In 1976, Norman Cousins, the revered editor of the Saturday Review, wrote a piece that signaled the arrival of laughter in the precincts of science. It was called “Anatomy of an Illness (as Perceived by the Patient)” and appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the United States’ most prestigious medical publication. When the best conventional care failed to improve his ankylosing spondylitis — a crippling autoimmune spinal arthritis — Cousins took matters into his own hands. He checked himself out of the hospital and into a hotel, took megadoses of antiinflammatory vitamin C, and watched long hours of Marx Brothers movies and TV sitcoms. He laughed and kept on laughing. He noticed that as he did, his pain diminished. He felt stronger and better. As good an observer as any of his first-rate doctors, he developed his own dose-response curve: ten minutes of belly laughter gave him two hours of pain-free sleep. Soon enough, he became more mobile.

DECREASES STRESS Once the healing power of laughter was on the medical map, researchers began to systematically explore its stress-reducing, health-promoting, pain-relieving potential. Laughter has now been shown to decrease stress levels and improve mood in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, to decrease hostility in patients in mental hospitals, and to lower heart rate and blood pressure and enhance mood and performance in generally healthy IT professionals. In numerous experiments, people with every imaginable diagnosis have reduced their pain by laughing. Laughter stimulates the dome-shaped diaphragmatic muscle that separates our chest from our abdomen, as well as our abdominal, back, leg, and facial muscles. After we laugh for a few minutes, these muscles relax. Then our blood pressure and stress hormone levels decrease; pain-relieving and mood-elevating endorphins increase, as do levels of calming serotonin and energizing dopamine. Our immune functioning — probably a factor in Cousins’s eventual recovery — improves. If we are diabetic, our blood sugar goes down. Laughter is good exercise. It’s definitely healthy. And it’s first-rate for relieving stress. 1 6  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

Laughter also has a transforming power that transcends physiological enhancement and stress reduction. Laughter can break the spell of the fixed, counterproductive, self-condemning thinking that is so pervasive and so devastating to us after we’ve been traumatized. It can free us from the feelings of victimization that may shadow our lives and blind us to each moment’s pleasures and the future’s possibilities. The wisdom traditions of the East extend laughter’s lessons. Zen Buddhism surprises us with thunderclaps of laughter to wake us from mental habits that have brought unnecessary, self-inflicted suffering. Sufi stories do the same job but more slyly. Over the years, I watched as my acupuncture and meditation teacher Shyam, himself a consummate joker, punctured the self-protectiveness, pomposities and posturing that kept his patients and students — including, of course, me — from being at ease and natural, joyous in each moment of our lives. The stories he told from India, China and the Middle East brought the point home: seriousness is a disease. Sorrow is real and to be honored, but obsessively dwelling on losses and pain only adds to our sickness. Laughter at ourselves and all our circumstances is our healing birthright.

THREE LAUGHING MONKS A story I first heard from Shyam about the Three Laughing Monks is apropos. It is said that long ago, there were three monks who walked the length and breadth of China, laughing great, belly-shaking laughs as they went. They brought joy to each village they visited, laughing as they entered, laughing for the hours or days they stayed, and laughing as they left. No words. And it’s said that after a while everyone in the villages — the poorest and most put-upon and also the most privileged and pompous — got

the message. They, too, lost their pained seriousness, laughed with the monks, and found relief and joy. One day, after many years, one of the monks died. The two remaining monks continued to laugh. This time when villagers asked why, they responded, “We are laughing because we have always wondered who would die first, and he did and therefore he won. We’re laughing at his victory and our defeat, and with memories of all the good times we have had together.” Still, the villagers were sad for their loss. Then came the funeral. The dead monk had asked that he not be bathed, as was customary, or have his clothes changed. He had told his brother monks that he was never unclean, because laughter had kept all impurities from him. They respected his wishes, put his still-clothed, unwashed body on a pile of wood, and lit it. As the flames rose, there were sudden loud, banging noises. The living monks realized that their brother, knowing he was going to die, had hidden fireworks in his clothes. They laughed and laughed and laughed. “You have defeated us a second time and made a joke even of death.” Now they laughed even louder. And it is said that the whole village began to laugh with them. This is the laughter that shakes off all concerns, all worries, all holding on to anything that troubles our mind or heart, anything that keeps us from fully living in the present moment.

LAUGHTER YOGA Researchers and clinicians may lack the total commitment to laughter of the three monks, but they are beginning to explore and make use of its power. Working together in various institutions, they’ve developed a variety of therapeutic protocols that may include interactions with clowns and instruction in performing stand-up comedy. “Laughter yoga,” which has most often been studied, combines inspirational talks, hand clapping, arm swinging, chanting “ho, ho” and “ha, ha,” deep breathing, and brief periods of intentional laughter; it often concludes with positive statements about happiness. I agree that funny movies and jokes and games of all kinds can be useful tools to pry us loose from crippling seriousness. Still, I prefer to begin with a simple, direct approach: three to five minutes of straight-out, straight-ahead, intentional belly laughter. It’s very easy to learn and easy to practice. I’ll teach it to you. I do it with patients individually or in groups, when the atmosphere is thick with smothering self-importance or self-defeating, progress-impeding self-pity. panacea, a cure-all. But, again and again, I’ve seen it get energetic juices flowing, rebalance agitation-driven minds, melt trauma-frozen bodies, dispel clouds of doubt and doom, and let in the light of Hope. This laughter needs to begin with effort. It must force its way through forests of self-consciousness and self-pity, crack physical and emotional walls erected by remembered hurt and present pain. Once you decide to do it, the process is simple. You stand with your knees slightly bent, arms loose, and begin, forcing the laughter up from your belly, feeling it contract, pushing out the sounds — barks, chuckles, giggles. You keep going, summoning the will and energy to churn sound up and out. Start with three or four minutes and increase when you feel more is needed. And after laughing, as you become relaxed and less serious, you may find that people relate to you differently. Sensing the change in you, they may greet you or smile at you on the street. And you may find that you’re happy to see them and that you enjoy the warmth of this new connection. Don’t take my word for any of this. Do the experiment with daily laughter and see. a DR. Living Inspired is a Call to Action BY

LUMARI

LIVING INSPIRED IS A call to action. It’s active inspiration that brings you the connection with Spirit and your calling and purpose, and then moves you forward. You are called to move, to create, to engage and to live in a fuller capacity. That’s one of the reasons that living inspired is so important to your life and to our world. When you are called to action from the space of living inspired, you feel joy and exuberance. You are called forward onto the clear path to your vision, self-expression, service and your dreams. This call to action, initiated by true inspiration, is a positive, generous, uplifting forward motion. You feel openings, notice possibilities and you may notice things that need your particular vision and expertise. The calling comes in when you are taking action, whether that action is to get going on a project or start a new movement to change the world. How do you start living inspired so you can engage in your call to action? Do you know what lights you up? I created this new quote, “What lights you up, lights your way.” If you know what lights you up, what brings joy, intrigue, fun, interest and passion into your life, you are being shown your light. When I say, “What lights you up,” I’m asking you to explore where your joy and interests show up in your life. When I say, “What lights your way,” I am pointing you to the path that already contains your light. What lights you up is your inner light, your inspiration, your connection to your gifts and to the divine. What lights your way is your light shining outward and the divine light shining onto your path. So the lights are shining. What do you do next? Take action in harmony with your light. Initially, think of your light as your calling. Later, your understanding of your calling will

become much bigger, more realized and more profound. So, listen to the calling, then take action. When you are living inspired, you are in action. Go do something. Initially you may take a simple action. You may make some notes, call a friend, write a poem, donate money, sing a song, share an article, help someone in need. Do something that you love and that makes you smile. Each time you take actions inspired by your own light, you are starting to live inspired. Then, let this expand. Grow, share and open to more joy! For me, right now, writing this article is bringing me joy. I can feel my own light and I hope you can feel yours. It’s a simple act, a call to action that brings my gift into the world. What do you want to share? What lights you up, that may, in turn, shine some light to others? I’d love to know! In my book, Living Inspired With Lumari, I reveal the higher frequencies of living inspired that empower your vision, your creativity and the capacity to jump right in and create, lead and succeed. When you work with the teachings and wisdom of living inspired, you are able to bring your visions, art, healing, business and leadership into the light and into our world. Living inspired is your call to action. When you are living inspired, your call to action becomes a gift in your life and an accelerating gift in our world. a LUMARI is the author of several books, including Living Inspired With Lumari: Engage The Lights Of Awakening, Revelation & Transformation. LIVING WITHOUT FEAR & WITH TRUST R e a d a l l 1 5 a r t i c l e s o n o u r M o n t h l y To p i c o n D e c e m b e r 1 a t E d g e m a g a z i n e . n e t

Reducing Fear by Awakening our Conscience and Self-Trust “Fear is present when we forget that we are a part of God’s divine design. Learning to experience authentic love means abandoning ego’s insistence that you have much to fear and that you are in an unfriendly world.” — Wayne Dyer BY

KERI MANGIS

WAYNE DYER’S QUOTES always strike at the heart of the matter. But this one makes me pause. After all, we do live in an unfriendly world, do we not? With its wars, greed, hatred, theft, cruelness and disregard for life, it is a stretch to pretend that this is a safe, friendly world where benevolence and kindness outweighs selfishness and meanness. In a friendly world, minor traffic violations would not turn deadly based on the color of someone’s skin. In a friendly world, 43 percent of the American population would not feel the need to live with a gun in their home. In a friendly world, the chances of a woman being sexually assaulted would not be one in six. Personally, willing ourselves to believe we live in a friendly world is not only a naïve act, it is a dangerous one. This is not a friendly world, nor are we an overwhelmingly friendly species. At best, it is a world in which the forces of good and evil continue to do battle each day, as they have for millennia — and sometimes goodness wins. And yet, we cannot live our lives looking over our shoulder every day, narrow-eyed and suspicious. I’ve done that before. It only made me more afraid. But neither can we live holed up in our homes. Our isolation and loneliness would damage our hearts, which thrive on connection and belonging, as well as our souls, which crave meaning. To live without fear in today’s world, one of three things must occur: • We tell ourselves, despite all evidence of our eyes and ears, that this is a friendly world, and we are safe. This option demands some degree of delusion and escapism. In choosing this option, we have to limit what we see, hear, and get curious about. Thus, we can’t fully participate in the world, nor can we make it better. We cannot be a catalyst for change if we have

our fingers in our ears. • We trust some higher power, angels, fate, or our own good intentions to keep us safe. Option two requires an amount of self-importance, even arrogance. To believe that there is an ultimate being that is looking out for our well-being — ours personally, over others who experience horrible fates at the hands of a cruel world — must be the epitome of spiritual narcissism. To believe that angels (or God) focus on who wins the football game, who gets the prime parking place, or who lives and dies in a car crash — can we not see the self-importance we’re assigning to ourselves? We are not blessed if we beat cancer, nor cursed if it kills us. God is not “watching over us” any more than anyone else. Or…
 • We awaken our conscience and let it guide us. We trust that we have the capacity, the strength, the courage, the patience and the resiliency to face whatever friendly and unfriendly forces we might meet as we go about our days. With this option, there is no delusion. Nor is there any need to hide away. With this option, we can accept the truth that “bad guys” don’t just live in books, movies and in other countries but live among and with us. Caroline Myss defines evil as what happens when people “consciously choose to disconnect from

their conscience.” When defined like this, it is difficult to deny the presence of evil in our society, and suddenly there is plenty of reason to be fearful. But, by living life with our conscience awake and working for us, we do not need to outsource our safety. Though we can lean on the spirit world for guidance and even protection, it’s as a friend or guide rather than a parent/disciplinarian/ authoritarian. When our conscience is awake, we own our choices and responses. We admit our shortcomings and cease blaming others. We have faith in ourselves, in our truth, in our integrity. Ultimately, we live from our power — even in an unsafe, unfriendly world. a KERI MANGIS, on the surface, might seem a gentle yet candid introvert. 7 Things to Remember about Fear “One of the effects of fear is to disturb the senses and cause things to appear other than what they are.” — Miguel de Cervantes BY GINA M. GAFFORD

ABOUT 16 YEARS AGO, I was swimming in the ocean, and a wave crashed upon me, and I hit my head on something. Everything was fine until 4 a.m. when I started to throw up, and the room spun around. I thought I was going to die. After going to urgent care, I found out that I had a bad case of vertigo. I never experienced something so scary in my life, besides giving birth to my two daughters. Fear crept up inside me because I imagined the worst-case scenario. I had to hold my best friend’s hand because I was so debilitated. Fear feels so real. It can cloud your mind and create hopelessness. Now I can look back and remember the words, “This too shall pass.” Seven things to remember about fear: • Give fear no power. Be aware of your thoughts. Your mind will create imaginations that are not true. Remind yourself to stay in the present moment. • Remember, fear is another emotion. Emotions pass. • Identify the specific event that caused the fear and sever the emotional ties. • Remember, the more you hold onto fear, the more it manifests. Fear is like food — you want more. • Be aware of the burden of your thoughts. Are you afraid because of your attachment to something? An example is an attachment to failure or success. • Reprogram the subconscious mind using mantras, meditation or hypnosis. • Learn to transform your fear. For example, turn your fear into gratitude. I remember hearing that the antidote to fear is gratitude. Anthony Robbins, a noted author and life coach, says, “The antidote to fear is gratitude. The antidote to anger is gratitude. You can’t feel fear or anger while feeling gratitude at the same time.” Sometimes when I feel fear, I say to myself, “I am so thankful for my life. I will be okay.” Fear is a human instinct, but irrational fear is harmful to maintaining homeostasis in the human body. The mind is very powerful. However, we can train our mind to become aware of our thoughts. With this awareness and mindfulness, we can see how fear manifests and learn how to transform it. a GINA M. Fear Factored Out Spirit Leaves BY JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER WHERE THERE IS LIGHT, darkness cannot exist; likewise, where there is love, fear will not exist. These are only words, though. Each of us as human beings will experience episodes of feeling fearful, whether it’s encountering the unknown or having past traumas triggered by present issues. Regardless of external conditions, all fear emanates from within. That is the wisdom and truth in the adage, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Older souls know this. They have reached the point of having almost completely transmuted all fears into love. Younger souls, on the other hand, are fearful most of the time. Cedric Red Feather has reviewed the ages of the soul with me many times so that, now, I am able to recognize a person’s soul age by certain signs and behaviors. “Baby souls and younger souls,” he explains, “are always fearful. Everything is still strange and new and unknown to them. They haven’t had that many lives on Earth as humans; they just don’t have the memory tapes as a reference when dealing with various situations. An older soul, like me, well…I’ve been around. I’ve seen things.” What Cedric means is that, through successive incarnations, we’re exposed to different life encounters. We gain experience through facing an abundance of challenges so that, in future lives, we have an Akashic remembrance to which we can refer. We can feel greater confidence as a multitude of circumstances arise and play out. Obviously, more is involved here than simply living lifetime after lifetime. Through conscious effort in life, one attains realizations and begins to grow spiritually. That is how all fear is eventually transmuted to love. I used to be afraid of many things — spiders, very cold weather, adolescent boys in a group who laugh too loud and long, very deep water, and things that go bump in the night. The inciting events are not important; they merely serve as projective canvases onto which feelings of dread and helplessness imprint, creating overlays with past negative encounters. After the Harmonic Convergence of 1987, my spiritual learning curve engaged a

rapid acceleration. What ultimately changed was my response to fearful imaginings; I stopped giving in to fear or letting it determine my treatment of others. There was a radical shift in my perception of the world and the way my human self and soul fit in it. I realize how fortunate I am in this lifetime as the result of some of the choices I have made. I chose professions that I could excel in, emerged, free of the demands of marriage and children. I don’t think of these as sacrifices anymore — as things I am missing out on; I have done these in previous lifetimes. What I have done is create a present lifetime that is graciously spacious and open. I have ample time to reflect, question, synthesize and understand. My current state of fear-less-ness took a lot of work, arising from decades of meditation, prayer, ceremonies, reading and listening to spiritual treatises and channeled material. The path is not important, however; what matters is keeping the focus. I now have more extended periods in which I am not afraid. As soon as anything negative wells up, I acknowledge it and immediately replace it with love and light. Anytime I perceive the negative intentions of others or threats of any kind, I instantly connect to the healing energy of love and benevolence that surrounds all of us. In response, I generate only benevolent feelings and intent. As we walk about this Earth, we are as sweeping waves of energy, carrying in our wake a group of angels, spirit helpers and guides. We are constantly surrounded by loving, kind intention. In acknowledging our connection to Source, there is no room for anything negative to thrive. I remind myself each day that I am a part of a much larger energy, and that this greater energy, oversoul or Divine Source energy is a great force of love and compassion. In this way, I am equipped to meet the next turn in the road, replacing fear and dread with love and light. a JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER, J.D., M.A., is a ceremonial singer who has learned over 60 traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota. Fear: You Can’t Live With It, and You Can’t Live Without It JEAN WALLIS YES, THAT’S WHAT I SAID. If we didn’t have fear we would not survive. We’d run into trucks. Fear becomes an obstacle rather than a support when we let it dictate our lives and do not manage it. What is fear, anyway? One definition of fear is the expectation of pain. When we think we will be hurt, we fear the source of that hurt, whether it is an experience, a person’s actions or an object. Another definition of fear that Spirit gave to me a couple years ago is that fear is just a sign there is a problem to be solved. When we can identify the problem, we can face it and eradicate the fear. When we are problem-solving we are in control of the situation, not a victim of the situation. Oh, yes, fear puts us in the victim role. Let me give you an example of fear being a problem to be solved. Let’s say we are afraid to drive on the freeway. What is the problem? What are we afraid of? That we will be overstimulated by the movement? That someone will not drive safely around us? That we will miss our exit and get lost? All of this culminates in the fear that we will have an accident and get killed. Problem 1: If we are overstimulated, we can BY

drive in the slow lane, try to go on the freeway during non-rush-hour times, focus our attention on those ahead of us and not having any more broad a vision than is necessary to drive safely ourselves. Problem 2: We cannot control the other drivers. Maybe drive during the day or early evening when there will be fewer drivers drinking on the roads. Leave a lot of room between us and the other cars so we don’t get cut off closely. Take a defensive driving course to be more prepared for dangerous drivers’ behavior. Problem 3: Check out a map to see our exits in advance and notice those in progression to ours. Get in the appropriate lane as early as possible to be ready to exit when the sign shows up. Be proactive with fear and it leaves. So, to understand fear better, let’s look at where it comes from. It comes from our ego. Oftentimes we think of ego as a personality thing, like “That person has a big ego,” meaning the person is arrogant or thinks they are better than everybody else. That is not the true meaning of ego. Our ego is a tool of our mind. It is not ➤ see LIVE WITH IT on p. 22

continued from p. 21

our mind, just a tool of our mind. Our ego is designed to bring us (our mind) information about things that are a possible threat to our survival. The significant word here is “possible.” As we have life experiences, the ego jots notes about what hurt us or made us uncomfortable in any way. When we have a new experience, it refers to its notes to see if it has anything in common with a hurtful experience of the past. If it finds even the smallest thread of comparison, it will bring us information saying, “Danger, danger, warning, warning, stay away from this!” Now, this is all well and good, because it is sharing information with us that could be useful to prevent our harm. However, the problem is that somewhere along the line we gave up our choice-making to the ego and no longer discerned for ourselves whether there was true danger or just a problem to be solved. So now the ego is making choices for us. It was not designed to do that. To manage the ego and use fear as a support, we can just thank the ego for bringing us the information, but make our own decision on how to behave, taking that information into consideration. We are the masters/mistresses of our universe. We can be in charge. We do not need to be in fear. We can be in our Divine Consciousness instead. a JEAN WALLIS is a psychic in Minneapolis who currently teaches courses on Emotional Empowerment, Universal Energy and Psychic Development, Exploring our Body, Mind, and Spirit, Eternal Love Meditation, and Kwan Yin Healing. Freedom and Truth — a Perception Shift Away “All Suffering is due to wrong identification.” — The Buddha BY ERIC J. CHRISTOPHER

THE PROCESS OF DISSOLVING my deeply rooted fears began when I was backpacking around India as an impressionable 24 year old. I decided to work at one of Mother Theresa’s homes for the destitute and dying in Calcutta (now Kolkata). The experience of sitting with people as they died seeded a belief in me that we are not our bodies, and that our consciousness transcends this dense Earth realm. This belief eventually sprouted into an inner knowing as I encountered experiences that reinforced this truth. For example, when my girlfriend died of breast cancer 13 years ago, an evidence-based medium was able to tell me things no one would know but us. Also, as I became fascinated with past-life memories, I researched numerous verified past-life memories of children as well as adults who recalled past lives through hypnotic regression. In their book, A Lawyer Presents the Evidence for the Afterlife, Victor and Wendy Zammit argue that if all of the evidence for the afterlife were put in a court of law, it would win easily and unanimously. Evidence of the afterlife reveals that we are eternal, indestructible soul beings. Although we one day will lose our body, we can never separate ourselves from the energy and consciousness that animates our body. Thus, a key premise in releasing fears is to know that you can never be harmed. From the vantage point of the body, that sounds absurd, and it is, because the body gets hurt, sick and dies. But truth is relative, and from the “more relatively true” vantage point of your “more permanent self,” you ultimately cannot be harmed, because you are energy and consciousness that comes from Oneness, and how can Oneness be harmed? The more Truth can become embedded in the belief system of the ego, which is based on the illusion of separateness and identification with our body, the more our fears begin to melt away, being replaced with a calm, inner assurance that all is well and always has been and will be. Fears are built into the human experience. Fears come with a body that can get hurt and die. Messages of fear also come in when we’re young and we are completely dependent on outside caregivers for a sense of love, value and security. When it doesn’t happen, because our parents are humans operating from their own issues and beliefs, subconscious fears can take root, such as not being lovable, being judged as “less than” or fear of failing, etc. We get conditioned early on to look for our sense of self through outside sources like family and friends

rather than from within. Thus, a big key in releasing subconscious fears is to identify more with the aspect of you that cannot be harmed. Freedom comes with an identity shift. When I help clients release limiting fears, I initially guide them on a deep inner journey within to connect with their Higher Self and Source energy. This is possible because no one can be separated from their Higher Self and Source energy…it simply gets covered up in the human experience. Thus, hypnotherapy can be used to help de-hypnotize yourself from the source of all suffering — ego identification. From the vantage point of Source, all fears stem from false beliefs of the ego self. They feel true from the ego’s mindset, and may have become embedded into our subconscious mind’s operating system at a young age, but these beliefs are not actually true from the standpoint of a higher dimension of yourself and of Truth. As we begin our spiritual journey of awakening out of ego identification, there becomes a trickle-down effect of releasing subtle fears that are not in alignment with our Higher Self. We, as souls, are challenging ourselves to allow our body/mind systems to be clear vessels for the brilliance of our true selves to shine through. As we operate and live less from our false fears and outdated programming, and more from our true selves, we are naturally guided by our own passions, gifts and strengths. We become the beings of freedom and love that we always have been and always will be. a ERIC J. CHRISTOPHER has a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and is a certified hypnotherapist. His life passion has been to spiritually awaken and help clients do the same by guiding them to connect to their inner wisdom and higher self that can uncover and heal the roots of limiting fears and beliefs. He specializes in past-life regression therapy, life-between-lives therapy, and also present-life deep emotional healing of the body and subconscious mind. He has a private practice in St. Paul. A LIFE WITHOUT FEAR BY

DAVID A. SCHWERIN, PH.D.

FEAR IS ONE OF OUR greatest enemies. We all have fears: of public speaking, of dying, of pain, of relinquishing control, of experiencing our feelings and of living fully. In addition, an elevated sense of self-importance increases the frequency of other fears: of failure, of unmet desires, of rejection, and of losing prized possessions. Becoming conscious of these fears requires considerable self-reflection. Many fears are held in our subconscious. We are, therefore, not aware of how they negatively impact our lives. True fear triggers responses that protect us, actions that can save our lives. Illusory fear, which exists only in our thoughts and imagination, often goes by the acronym False Evidence Appearing Real. Both true and false fears can be useful if we understand the reason for their existence. False fear shows up as worry, anxiety, stress and thoughts about what could go wrong in the future. When you connect with your Higher Self and soul, fearful thoughts fade away. You gain confidence that your decisions are aligned with love, truth and the unity of all that exists. The soul’s guidance might not correspond to society’s rules but rather to your soul’s mission and intent. As I explain in the book Know Your Soul: Bring Joy to Your Life, both the Higher Self and soul can be trusted to do what is needed to acquire greater self-knowledge, accomplish a specific task and contribute to life. We may view life’s circumstances as unpleasant or fearful. That is because we don’t see the whole picture or have the ability to connect cause and effect. In fact, there are no accidents or mistakes and therefore no reasons to fear. Life is a joyful experience once we trust and surrender to our soul’s guidance and direction. Your small self — your ego — is frequently frightened, reacting unconsciously to things that happened in the past or might happen in the future. Our ego defends us against feeling painful childhood experiences. We need to replace this immature voice with the more mature voice of our higher self and soul. The Higher Self is closer to the human personality and we connect to it more easily.

The soul is focused on the big picture; it is accessible as we evolve. When sense of self derives exclusively from the ego — a split-off particle of the total consciousness — the personality is unable to let go and trust higher powers. This split-off part must be integrated with its source; otherwise, it withers and dies. You can’t embrace a fearless state when your sense of being comes exclusively from your small self’s urges and instincts. When fear arises, acknowledge it but don’t become engaged. It will pass like every other emotion. Fears arise from thoughts and beliefs we mistakenly assume to be true. Expanding on Dr. Lisa Rankin’s book, The Fear Cure, these misconceptions include: • Uncertainty is precarious and to be avoided. • It is impossible to accept the loss of cherished friends, family or possessions. • It is a dangerous world; control must be maintained. • I am separate from others, isolated and alone.

These fearful assumptions are merely thoughts that your small self adopts as true. In contrast, these ideas inspire courage: • Uncertainty offers opportunities for a wider range of exciting experiences. • Loss is natural and often leads to growth. • We are all interconnected, interdependent and indivisible. • The universe is meaningful, purposeful and trustworthy. In truth, we live in a friendly, benevolent cosmos; fearless living is our birthright. a DAVID A. SCHWERIN, PH.D., is author of two books and dozens of articles published worldwide. His third book, co-authored with Diana Muenz Chen, titled Know Your Soul: Bring Joy to Your Life, is available on Amazon. David has spoken to academic, political and business audiences in the U.S., China and India and received numerous honors for his work in China.
