Monarch Butterflies: Messengers of the Afterlife BY C . E . F L O R E S
The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), with its distinctive orange and black wings, is intimately associated with the Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) customs of the Purépecha people in the Mexican state of Michoacán. This magnificent butterfly’s migration across North America is a powerful symbol of transformation, migration, and the cyclical nature of life. The arrival of millions of butterflies in late October and early November is believed to be a physical manifestation of ancestral spirits returning from the afterlife, bridging the gap between worlds. Clusters of these brightly colored souls overwinter in the oyamel (Abies religiosa) fir forests of central Mexico. In many regions of Mexico, the concept of three deaths is a prevalent belief. La Primera Muerte (the First Death) is the death of the physical body. La Segunda Muerte (the Second Death) occurs when the soul leaves on its journey through the spirit realm, symbolized by the monarch’s journey in the spring. La Tercera Muerte (the Third Death) is the moment when the the deceased is forgotten by the living.
During Dia de Muertos celebrations, a period of remembrance, those who have departed are welcomed with altars adorned with marigolds (Tagetes erecta), known as the ‘flower of the dead.’ Its vibrant orange petals emit a fragrant call to the souls on their journey. Burning copal (Bursera spp.) resin fills the air with its aroma, inviting loved ones to pause for a visit. Favorite foods, gifts from the earth, are prepared and placed out to tempt, while a glass of water for these wandering souls stands nearby. At times, a white towel laid beside the glass captures the impression of the visiting spirit who sought refreshment. So the next time you catch sight of these remarkable butterflies, remember that their graceful flight carries profound messages of life beyond, connecting distant realms and conveying the enduring love that transcends even the greatest of distances. a

Life After Adulthood: Growth of the Soul, Ages 29 to 84 B Y C AT H Y G N AT E K
The longer you live, the more you get a feel for life’s ebbs and flows, the natural rhythm of cycles of growth, sustenance, and decay. Psychologist Carl Jung wrote that at midlife, the soul calls us to “individuate,” to throw off all the “shoulds” imposed on us by others and explore the unknown parts of who we are. Like all of life’s major transitions, this awakening coincides with an astrological transit, the “Uranus Opposition,” when Uranus in the sky opposes Uranus in our birth chart. Uranus is the planet of revolution, freedom, and the soul’s demand that we devote ourselves to the deepest part of who we are. And, when this transit hits at age 39-44, life can explode for us. Our birth charts are unique and complex, a fingerprint of our soul. So, the explosion differs depending on what house Uranus is transiting. If it is in the 10th House, you may feel an urge to pursue that dream career that you ignored because it did not fit the world’s expectations for you. If it is in your 4th House, you could be seized by a desire to move, to learn about your roots, or to reshape family relationships. What blows my mind is that every life transition can be seen in the movement of the planets, from our “First Saturn Return,” at 29 when we are called to face limitations and stand on our own, to our Uranus Return at 84 when we gain the freedom to express ourselves without concern for what the world thinks. And everything in between: Our Pluto square Pluto and Neptune square Neptune in our 30s, opening us and working us over in preparation for the big moment of the Uranus opposition; Our Chiron Return at 50 when we reconcile ourselves with our own suffering, a moment when we often reach peace around our own wounded nature. From there, we continue our maturation process with the 2nd Progressed Lunar Return at 54 when we come home to our capacity to mother ourselves, and our Second Saturn Return at 58-59 and Uranus Square at 63-65, which prepare us for retirement and the joy of stepping into the “third act” of our life. Astrology can guide us through these moments of change, offering clues from your birth chart of how you might experience the moment and how to work with the energy. And, if you are struggling with a transition, it can offer the comfort that “this too shall pass” by letting you know when the transit will end. As in childhood, each stage of growth brings trials and pains. Xibalba, the Place of Fright BY L A U R A L A B R I E
When the ancient Maya people left this incarnation, most descended into Xibalba, the Place of Fright, the realm ruled by the Lords of Death. According to the Popul Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, those who plummeted into the Underworld faced terrifying challenges like the House of Giant Deadly Bats, the House of Darkness, and the House of Knives. there. You slip into the water and dive beneath the surface, and there, under the water on the back wall of the cave, you see a huge black hole. Imagine the fear you might feel. This is the gaping maw of Xibalba, the entrance to the Underworld. It is a portal to the Place of Fright. It is said that when the clouds cover the sun and the rain god Chaac sends water to the earth, the portals to the Underworld are thin, so thin that you can feel the darkness of the other side. I have been there. I felt the energy of Xibalba. In truth, it is not just the abode of the ancient Maya dead. It is still calling to souls who stand at its doorway today. a

“For most people, death is probably the single most joyous experience of their life.” I remember hearing these words from my mystic teacher of past life regression. I found his words to be true as I later became a past life regression therapist, guiding thousands of people to other lives their soul has lived. In these sessions, people experience glimpses of entire lifetimes in an hour or two. These lives are often full of unique challenges and transitions, but one thing they have in common is that they all come to an end. Yet the end of life is where the fun begins for the soul. It’s a time of moving up to a higher vibration that feels like “home.” It’s a time of reunion, of basking in unconditional love and acceptance no matter how badly we feel we screwed up our lives. It’s a time of reflection and evaluation of how we handled the challenges of that life, especially loss. Did we shut down and guard our hearts, allow the grief process to naturally run through us, and then have the courage to love again or be the source of comfort for those who inevitably experience loss? The afterlife is also a time of planning for the next life, to again
challenge ourselves with whatever we want to learn, accomplish, or experience as a soul. Earth life is designed to be challenging. The soul’s instinct is to grow and evolve, and it uses earth lives to do so, especially since earth is one of the most difficult places to incarnate, due largely to the strong amnesia of our permanent soul self. Eckhart Tolle says we grow the most on the heels of tragedy or loss. Indeed, I’ve witnessed many people begin their spiritual journey after the death of a loved one. As the sage Adyashanti put it, “The spiritual search is Life trying to be conscious of itself.” As we begin to awaken and identify more with our true nature while living this life, our fears evaporate, life flows more easily, and we will have created a more fulfilling life to reflect upon when we joyously cross over to the other side. a

What is our life like after our physical life is complete? Do we continue into the beyond? As I have worked with those who have passed and no longer have a physical body, my perception of physical death has changed. I have worked with a Team in the non-physical realm throughout my life. They are always teaching me more about their world through the mediumship sessions I do for people and by talking to me directly. When we pass, we are always met or greeted by others who have already passed. They may be family, friends, pets, Angels, or a combination of these entities. Those on the other side are anticipating a reunion with us, full of love and support. People who have had what we may consider a difficult or tragic passing experience something a little different. They have shown me that someone came to get them and remove them from the situation before their passing. Their physical body was experiencing the tragic passing, but their soul was now separate from their physical body and observing. It is similar to when you have surgery, and your body experiences the pain, but you are separated from it and don’t remember. Those who have passed attend their celebration of life – sometimes, with passed family, friends, Angels, and others walking with Jesus. Those who ask expect Jesus to be there for them, and Jesus is happy to be with all who ask. He can be with multiple people around the world at once because he is multidimensional, just as we are. Many who pass continue to show support for people here in multiple ways – letting you know they are around by using electronics, songs, moving items, dreams, feelings, knowing, and anything else possible to get your attention.

They can bring people or opportunities to make your life easier – answering our prayers when experiencing abuse, mental anguish, or physical pain, sending signs, or a loving, supportive presence in your time of need. They want people to call on them whenever and as much as they want or need. They are able to be in multiple places at one time as they are fully stepping into their multi-dimensionality. There is no time or space in their world. They are still playing a supportive role without a physical body. The more we connect to and acknowledge them, the more they derive immense pleasure in knowing they are making a positive impact on us and our world. How good does it feel for you to help someone and have them appreciate it? They feel the same way when they help us. They want us to strengthen our connection to them. We are bringing our worlds together as they teach us more about themselves, their world, and how they can help bring change to this world we live in. When we experience changes to our relationships, friendships, and the beauty of the world, create material accomplishments, and learn and grow, they do, too. We are navigating the new connected world together as a Team.

There’s a substantial belief that the term “after life” is now a mistake conclusion. Rather than thinking life is over once we die, we now have some data that says there is life after our time here on earth – a different form of life perhaps, but life, nonetheless. During a recent Feng Shui consultation, my client mentioned that her deceased cat was still hanging around. She could hear her purr from time to time and felt her cuddle up next to her in bed. Surprisingly, her cat had died 10 years ago, yet she was still “alive” on some level. The concept of being alive is true of a space as well and depending on whether it was nurtured or not, loved or not, the outcome could be positive or negative. Feng Shui is built on the principle that the owner's intentions are the most important element in creating a supportive space. That intention (whether consciously put in place or whether it was an unconscious action) remains even if the residents have moved out. In other words, the energy that the occupants create can determine the fate of the next people who move in. If a divorce recently occurred in a home, the next owner may have some partnership issues as well. If health is an issue for a person who then moves to another place, the next person or people have a high probability of experiencing health issues.
Without an intentional Feng Shui clearing and blessing, the after-life of that space could influence the relationship of the new occupants who inadvertently struggle with a version of the same issue. On the other hand, if the occupants of a home come into a substantial amount of money while living there (win the lottery, inheritance, stocks, etc.), who wouldn’t want to move in after they have moved? The after-life of that home, conscious or not, influences the current owners in a positive way. When we moved out of our home after 28 years, we brought specific items with us to not only remind us of our special place but to share the after-life with our new place – a place that had never been lived in before. Our home was sold to two people who adore it and are remodeling in an exciting and enticing way that reflects their intentions. I have no doubt that the after-life of that home created the invitation and the inspiration they needed to make the space their own unique home. Life after life. a

As I pondered the meaning of life after, I realized it could take me in many directions. But I want to share with you my life after story of when my mother died in 2020. It was a peaceful death, and she was ready to go when she passed away. Leading up to her death, we had many conversations about the state of the world and that it appeared as if things were in a constant chaotic downward spin. I assured her I knew many light workers and that things would turn out okay. And I told her that, ultimately, we as a society would get our act together, and things would be good; this seemed to appease her, and she would agree. The evening she passed, I luckily could be with her, even though the pandemic had just started and slowly things were going into lockdown. For many years, my mother had

heart disease, and in March 2020, she accepted that the time was near to leave, and she entered into hospice. I got to be with her on her last 24 hours on earth and listen in on her phone calls as she said goodbye to her brothers and sisters and finally to her three sons. My dad sat quietly off to the corner in a lazy boy. She was comfortable in her chair, chatting with my dad and reading the paper. I needed to run out to do some work and left her with a bowl of raspberries and a danish, a perfect last meal. I returned to the apartment and helped her into her bed, and we watched a favorite cable news show. She believed in always going to bed at the same time, so at 11:30 p.m., I told her it was time to go to sleep. She looked at me with a curious look of disbelief, and I had to remind her that the show was being replayed and, yes, it was indeed time to go to sleep, and I was not fooling her. Around 1:00 a.m., I felt her soul leave her body with a sucking whooshing energy. Her spirit hung around as the funeral people came, and she made sure I accompanied her body down into the waiting hearse. As I checked in with her soul, she told me that as she was dreaming that last evening, she got further and further away from her body and closer to the light. Her Guides told her she did not need to go back into her worn-out body. In a jubilee joyful opportunity, she kept going. No longer in a broken body, she was finally free as she flirted around visiting family members as a way to bid farewell. She also sent me the message that I was right in my suggestion that the chaotic energy of the world would dissipate as more and more raised their frequency. Life after a parent dying is never easy. As time went by, I realized how wise she was and the deeper meaning of her conversations. I miss her every day. She was the glue that held the larger family together, and when she passed away, the family slowly dissipated away as well. Nothing stays the same, and my life after her death has opened up the opportunity to understand how precious family and friends are and that spending time with your chosen family is important. Remember, tomorrow is never promised, and no one lives forever. Take the opportunity to lean in, be bold, and do the things you want to do now. What you do now could be your most joyous life after story. a

Our environment has a big impact on us, and we are only just beginning to understand to what extent. I have been dowsing homes for over 20 years, and in my experience as a Master Dowser, I have found the energy of our environment, while sometimes not seen or felt, can cause stress in our bodies and homes, which can lead to an array of physical and emotional symptoms. When I dowse a home, I find and cure geopathic stress and negative vortexes, both negative vibrations. The impacts from these vibrations can range from the inability to sleep soundly, having a depressed immune system, or a lack of motivation, inspiration, or clarity to a lack of harmony in your relationships or the inability to feel relaxed in your own home.
– G E O PA T H I C S T R E S S – Geopathic stress occurs when the natural vibrations emanating from the earth’s core are interrupted. This energy supports all living things on earth, and when interrupted, the resulting stress can impact our health and well-being where we live and work. Causes of geopathic stress include fault lines, underground water currents and aquifers, adjoining soils that differ in composition or type, and underground mines and tunnels.
The impact of geopathic stress can sometimes be seen on the surface in the form of cracks in walls or the ground – even in concrete – and breaks in plant growth, such as tree lines or shrubs, where one tree or shrub is dying or is much shorter than the surrounding ones. During dowsing, any geopathic stress in your home is identified and ‘cured,’ so it will no longer impact you or your family and uplift your space.
– VORTEXES –
Negative vortexes are places where the earth's etheric has been disturbed, and instead of creating a connection to higher realms of light (Positive Vortexes), they create an opening to the denser energies of the earth. We can identify a positive vortex by the places (or places) where everyone loves to be in your home. If you have a natural positive vortex in your home, you are fortunate. These places create areas of natural, uplifting energy. When you spend time in this area, you will feel energized and inspired. Conversely, negative vortexes are places in your home where no one wants to hang out, and often clutter will build up here. If someone in your home is sleeping in a negative vortex, they may experience bad dreams, nightmares, night terrors, and feelings of hopelessness and depression. A tendency towards addictions is also increased when a negative vortex exists in a home. When your home is dowsed, the negative vortexes are either neutralized or turned to positive vortexes, which creates a higher vibrational energy in your home. Finding and curing negative vibrations in your home will transform your home. When you transform the energy of your home, you transform your life. a

A mushroom's life begins with the death of something else. Inside a dying tree, the mushroom will begin to spore. A dying insect will create the perfect host for new life. The death of one plant or being can be the start of new life for another—a new beginning. The end is never the end for a mushroom. Mushrooms take life from the death of nature around them, making death a gift for life. Mushroom life can begin anywhere—from the dirt, woodchips, trees, tree stumps, and insects that crawl or even the ones that fly! Smart and vigilant, they know how to not only survive in many different conditions but also thrive in them, and come in many different varieties. Lion’s mane, with its many different natural gifts to help the brain and also help with anxiety, is just one great example of how smart and helpful these little fungi can be. Cordyceps are great for libido! They can increase your sexual endurance, passion, and stamina and are a great alternative for stress management. Let's not overlook Reishi, the King of mushrooms, also known as the "mushroom of immortality"! It's incredible how these mushrooms feed off dead trees and plants, absorbing their life force and using it to benefit anything that consumes them. It's like a health boost for our bodies, making us feel amazing and giving us a whole new level of vitality. This list doesn't even cover the over half dozen psychedelic mushrooms and the few psychoactive ones out there. When a mushroom spore finds its forever home, it starts its life cycle by putting out an enzyme that kills any harmful part of the soil, tree, or antibody that would halt the growth of the mushroom, making for optimal growth and securing it to begin its second stage of life. This enzyme not only creates better living
conditions but also turns the soil into the optimal area for the mushroom to continue producing fruiting bodies. When the mycelium enters stage two of its life, it firmly establishes itself in the soil, tree, or insect. At this point, the mushroom starts building a complex network and laying the groundwork for its next stage. It absorbs the remaining life of its host, providing a peaceful end, and transforms it into a nurturing habitat for new life. This is when it begins the process of developing into the mushrooms we come across in stores, during nature walks, or even in our own gardens and front yards. This begins the last stage of the mushroom's life cycle, but not the end! As the fruit starts growing and taking shape, it's already preparing for its "final" adventure. It releases spores into the air and soil, ensuring its cycle continues. These spores can travel through the air, landing on dying insects and other areas, kickstarting a new cycle. This not only brings new life to a dying site but also gives a refreshing view and a tasty meal to anyone who stumbles upon it. On April 27, 2009, I experienced the shattering loss of my husband due to an accidental carbon monoxide exposure. My personal journey through this sorrow is at the heart of my book Finding Joy After Loss, My Journey Through Grief. This event thrust me into a profound abyss of grief propelling me on a quest to find solace and understanding in the wake of this life altering event. Supported by a resilient network of family and friends I soon realized that the subject of death was met with silence and unease. It became evident that discussions about mortality were inherently uncomfortable and intertwined with our collective fear of the unknown realm beyond life. Fueled by a desire to break free from this fear and unravel the mysteries of existence, I embarked on an introspective journey. In the search for answers that had eluded me I turned to psychics and mediums, angel communicators and spiritual teachers drawn by their unique insights into the afterlife and angel realm. Through their channels, they offered glimpses and interpretations that cast light on the enigma of transitioning from life to whatever lies beyond. Attending retreats provided a sacred haven to reconnect not only with my departed husband, but also with my late parents infusing my quest with renewed purpose.
Amid this transformative journey, I discovered the Modern Mystery School. A haven for advanced spiritual teachings that unlocked the truths that I had sought for so long. A Purifying Herb Used for Centuries

Sage has been used by many different cultures for a wide variety of different purposes though the ages. It's been used for its metaphysical and medicinal properties as well as flavoring food. Let's look at this helpful herb and what it can do. Sage is a part of the salvia family and is a marvelous medicine! The term salvia comes from the Latin word Salvus, which means healthy. Sage has anti-inflammatory properties to decrease swelling and the pain associated with inflammation. It can protect the body from bacterial and viral infections. You can drink sage tea to ease digestive problems. It is great for respiratory disorders like asthma, coughs, and bronchitis. So, make sure you drink sage tea during the fall and winter months! Sage can also help ease depression, relieve skin disorders, excessive sweating, and help regulate different endocrine and metabolic disorders. Drinking sage tea twice daily increases your antioxidant levels to help your body's natural defenses. Sage is truly a medicinal miracle. Sage has been used for centuries to cleanse negativity from a space or person. Shamans and indigenous people use sage to exorcise "evil" and bring in "good" spirits. It's also used to bring on trance states during rituals, and some cultures even believed that sage made them immortal. There are different types of sage: white, blue, garden, and even desert sage. How's a person to know the proper sage to use and why it matters? The indigenous tribes have used white sage since the beginning of time for cleansing, purifying, ceremonial rituals, and even hygiene. They use this herb for sacred
medicine by burning the sage, called smudging. Personally, I don't like using the term smudging as I feel it has negative connotations. I prefer the term smoke cleansing, and I choose blue or garden sage when doing this. I have been working with members of the Lakota and the Chippewa tribes, asking about the do's and don'ts of using white sage. Both tribes have said they are fine with people using the white sage. Both tribes again are grateful to pass on this important tradition. They feel it's wonderful that we, as a society, are listening to their beautiful practices. They encourage us to use their sage in cleansings, purifications, and even rituals. These cultures would prefer that people work with the indigenous culture to procure their sage. This way, it is grown and harvested appropriately, and the revenue returns to the indigenous culture to be used as needed. I'm working with a local group of the Chippewa tribe to bring in their sage to Midwest Witchery and Healing. Currently, I carry other variations of sage. When burning sage, make sure you always use it with intention. For example, if you are using it to cleanse your home from negativity, state that when you are burning it. ALWAYS make sure windows are open. Otherwise, you may have the unfortunate result of a smoke detector going off! You also shouldn't blow out the sage. Let it burn out on its own. This ensures that the process is complete. A little goes a long way. You don't need to use the entire stick of sage at once – that bundle can last a long time. You don't need to burn sage constantly. Try weekly, monthly, or whenever the energies feel wonky. Although white sage is the more traditional sage used by indigenous people, we have other forms of sage that you can use similarly. If you decide to use white sage, please ensure you do not get it from someplace that mass produces it, as it is sacred. If you can, source it from the indigenous people directly. If you can't, come to Midwest Witchery and Healing to be directed to the proper sources. Stages of Faith 3: Mythical & Literal Faith by MAUREEN HIG GINS, MA
This is my third writing about James Fowler’s book, "Stages of Faith." You can find my other articles on this topic in The Edge Magazine. I find his work important because it tells us that, if we have difficult circumstances during the childhood years and don't heal from it, we may become "stuck" back in time. This means we may still behave and think like the developmental stage we're stuck or anchored in. This effects our relationships, beliefs, personal and work life and spiritual consciousness. Stage 3 - Mythical-Literal Faith (age 6 to 12) - During this stage, the child has concrete thinking so can construct an orderly, linear, and rather dependable world. They sort through what is "real" and what is "make believe." They can still have creative play but want to make sure that what is real is backed up by concrete facts. One of the greatest gifts of this stage is to narrate one's own experiences. It is also the stage where industry vs. inferiority is internalized which forms how we see ourselves with our creativity and future work life. If you have traumas or very stressful and difficult experiences during this stage, and do not work them through, you may stay stuck in this stage as an adult. You may keep a ceiling on what you can accomplish in life. This can later negatively impact your career and creativity. You may stay within the concreteness of your stories which makes it hard to make positive changes. You may base your life on your roles and what is expected from you based on childhood expectations. Your description and view of God may be that of a person who can relate to you and you to them. God may be considered a parent figure who knows best.
traumas and challenges. It is important to hold the intention that you are letting go of the past and replacing it with your own spirit. A shaman would call this a soul retrieval. This will raise your consciousness to one more aligned with Unity/Oneness consciousness which is what we need to move into a better world. Raising our consciousness means that we recognize that we are not our experiences. Our bodies may think we are our experiences, but it is not true. We can retrain our bodies to let go of the past and claim a magnificent present and future. Let's all join hands and do this work together! What do you do if you're stuck within this concrete stage? To get through the limitations of being developmentally stuck within Stage 3, you need to realize that you are stuck and that your beliefs and behaviors are limited and based on your grade school years. We are all limited and stuck within some sort of old story, even if we are beyond this stage. The difference is that the stories within this stage are more literal and concrete – more organized within the context of the culture and family we grew up in. A small part of each of us may be stuck within this stage – its just a matter of degree. An important part of healing this stage in life is going within your unconscious beliefs, patterns, emotions and behaviors. This is most easily accessed by paying attention to your physical body since everything you haven't worked through is held within it. Staying present to how your body is feeling, helps your body feel heard/understood/seen so it can relax and begin the process of healing. It’s helpful to work with a counselor or practitioner to assist with this since this may be intense work. A key component to permanent healing is replacing your issues with your spirit.
