Welcome to the last issue of 2023. As we look back on the last six years of publishing, I am amazed at how many topics we have covered and how many people we have met and featured. I always say that meeting new people is the best part of my job. Meeting Northshore Media Group’s Forty under 40 was, as always, such a pleasure. We have people from all over our listening and distribution area, and it is always so interesting to meet these 40 young professionals. A few I had met before, but many of them were new to me. It is impressive to see the quality of young professionals living and working here on the Northshore. The future is bright with their current and future leadership. They all were under 40 when nominated and come from many different backgrounds and professions. We will be host a reception for our honorees at The Southern Hotel and welcome guests. egrettably, New Orleans’ iconic Canal Street department stores like Maison Blanche and Godchaux’s were shuttered long before I moved to south Louisiana, but I’ve spent a great deal of time in Manhattan and I’m old enough to have lived through the heyday of upscale shopping malls, so I’m intimately familiar with those immersive emporiums of yesteryear. From elaborate holiday displays and mood-setting music to stellar customer service and infinite options for outfitting and accessorizing yourself and your home from top to bottom, it was easy to completely shut out the outside world and just lose yourself in the experience. Nowadays, most people, mainly younger generations, choose the quick and easy, detached and impersonal route of online shopping. But, if you’re mourning the demise of that aforementioned bygone era, you’re in luck. Its spirit is alive and well at Niche Modern Home in Mandeville. When I initially sat down with Steve Macloud and Jeff McNeely, co-owners of Niche, they were in the process of moving their flagship Mandeville store about a mile and a half to the west on Highway 190 from its original location in The Market at Chenier to its primo new spot in Premier Centre, adjacent to Whole Foods and Target. The new store was understandably in a state of complete disarray, as they were a couple of weeks away from their grand opening, so we had to weave our way through a maze of boxes, piles of unsorted inventory, and scattered shelving units to finally settle onto some lovely sofas tucked away in the back for a chat. This was actually the perfect setting for a raccoon-ish creature like me, who’s easily distracted by pretty, shiny things, especially when they’re organized into tidy stacks and lovely displays. The state of chaos, however, made it easier to focus on all the nitty-gritty details of their business and backgrounds. The two New Orleans natives painted the picture of living far from home when a “gravitational pull” brought them to Mandeville, closer to the family and culture they both missed dearly, where they were inspired to open their own establishment. “When Steve and I initially decided to do this, we recognized there wasn’t a lifestyle store on the Northshore,” Jeff explained. “We lived in the Northeast for a number of years and there were lots of shops like this, where you can come in to buy gifts, furniture, accessories and decor at an affordable price. That’s how the name Niche came to be. We felt like there was a niche that needed to be filled in this area.” “That was nearly 12 years ago,” Steve added. “It was a little 1200-square-foot space, and we never dreamed it would morph into what it is now. This little store has held its own.” “Held its own” is an understatement. The original location quadrupled in size over the course of just a few years, stretching into a series of rooms jam-packed with carefully curated inventory. In addition to a much better parking situation and accessibility, the new place boasts around 5,500 square feet of wide open space with movable walls that will allow for endless possibilities in the way of configuration and flow. They also officially became a chain last year with the opening of a new store in Covington, drawing in a whole new customer base from points further west, and creating another repository to fill with beautiful things.

So, let’s talk about the beautiful things you’ll find at Niche. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or looking for a special gift, “lifestyle store” is an apt description, given the width and breadth of the inventory. If you’re looking for cozy, they’ve got bedding, pajamas and slippers. Needing some aromatherapy and pampering? Along with scented candles, you’ll find fragrances and specialty toiletries for both men and women. There’s a whole section brimming with gourmet foods and all the kitchen accessories, serving trays, linens and tableware with which to serve them, plus lots of barware for parties or intimate dinners. If your home just needs a little sprucing up, they carry all manner of lovely and unique art, decor, lighting and accessories. Their selection of sofas and chairs can be customized by choosing from 500 different fabric samples. Speaking of customized, you can also order up personalized etched glassware and charcuterie boards, and staff can even help you assemble and beautifully wrap a tailor-made gift bag or basket. Despite the wide selection, there seems to be an overarching, cohesive aesthetic. Jeff told me just why that is. “Everything we buy would go in our house, it’s very much our taste. We’ve traveled the world, so there are a lot of references to places in Europe we’ve visited and great hotels we’ve stayed in. A lot of what we gravitate to are timeless designs. Traditional made a little more modern.” Steve went on to clarify, “When we named the store, we thought ‘modern’ could be a stigma. People typically think of modern as hard edged, sterile and not comfortable. So when we named it, we thought of it as soft modern. Clean and simple designs that are current, but classic enough that they don’t become dated.” “Soft modern” was the result of the merging of their two styles. Steve leans more toward modern, while Jeff’s taste is more traditional. So, how did this synergistic duo wind up in business together? They initially met and became a couple back in 1992, when they were attending Nicholls State University. In their subsequent moves to Washington, D.C. and Manhattan, Steve spent 16 years as a graphic designer and art director, creating signage, logos and even Larry King’s Christmas card one year! Jeff worked in the furniture industry, first in merchandising for a national retail chain, then as a corporate trainer and national account manager for a manufacturer.

They eventually opened a store similar to Niche in a suburb of D.C., but Steve held another job while Jeff mostly ran it. Niche is their first all-in, total leap of faith, tandem endeavor. If you’ve ever found yourself in a blind rage and on the verge of drawing up divorce papers in the middle of The Home Depot while trying to choose paint colors or inconsequential hallway lighting, you know how risky this is. Not everyone is cut out to go into business full-time with their significant other, but Jeff and Steve have found that they balance each other out quite nicely. While they both have an eye for decor and design, Steve spends more time handling the marketing and general business side of things these days, leaving Jeff to focus on staging and arranging their ever-evolving inventory. When asked to sum up the essence of Niche, Jeff said, “The type of store that we are is how we believe most people want to live. They want a beautiful home, they want it to be polished and elevated, but they don’t want it to be a museum. They want to be able to put your feet up on the sofa, let the kids climb all over it, and let the dogs sleep on it. Like the sofas, the rugs we carry are also 100 percent polyester, so you can clean them with soap and water. Polyester used to be a bad word, but it’s become incredibly durable and beautiful.” It’s this tasteful, but relaxed vibe that has helped their design business take root and blossom. Customers started coming in, falling in love with what they saw, and asking Jeff and Steve to replicate that in their homes.

If, like me, you’ve had a designer basically taste-shame you for your choice of paint colors or finishes, fear not. This is not how they operate. Jeff assured me that a lot of their clients are afraid of being judged at first, offering up a litany of disclaimers on the current state of their homes. But the team will simply come in to see how you live, help you wade through a sea of design choices, and figure out how to incorporate at least some of your existing pieces in a fresh, new way. If you decide you want, for instance, a pink kitchen, as one of their clients did, they’ll find a way to make it work! But, as Jeff explained, they typically try to find a balance between classic and trendy. “Our foundation is, let’s stick with the classics on the big ticket items, like a sofa, rug or chair. But maybe take a little more risk with pillows, accessories and things that are not a big investment, but have a big impact.” The brand new store opened about two weeks after I met with Jeff and Steve, and the timing was especially fortuitous, given the proximity to the holidays. Steve had told me that customers were clamoring for Christmas as early October in their first year of operation, so they’ve made sure to meet and exceed those expectations ever since. They warned me there’d be about 24 trees and lots of holiday bling, but my brain was not prepared for the mind blowing transformation I was about to behold. It was like someone had waved a wand over a warehouse and turned it into an enchanted fairyland!

When I arrived, the parking lot was packed and the front doors were flung wide open, allowing K.C. and the Sunshine Band’s “Boogie Shoes” to set a fun and seasonally appropriate (it was still October, after all!) vibe. Just inside, a young woman was video chatting with a friend, carefully chronicling every detail of the magnificent Christmas tree nestled within a lovely living room vignette. “I’ve already been here for an hour and a half,” she confessed. “There’s so much to see. It’s a Christmas wonderland!” She wasn’t kidding. My inner raccoon initially took over and my attention darted from shiny object to shiny object, and I stood mesmerized by some swirling, glittery tabletop trees and chapels for longer than I’d care to admit. Realizing this chaotic approach would not be conducive to the job at hand, I decided the best course of action was to use the first pass through the store to linger at each Christmas tree just long enough to guess at the motif, like a word association game show. Some conjured up abstract descriptors, like ethereal, regal, whimsical, nostalgic and classic. Others had more concrete themes, like the Nutcracker Suite, Louisiana, dogs, kitchens, cocktail parties and weddings. Each was strategically placed beside gifts and accessories associated with the themes.

Once the trash panda in me was satisfied and a little mental clarity was restored, my second pass allowed me to look beyond the holiday splendor to the bones of the actual store, from the neatly arranged fabric samples along the back wall to the cool cocktail lounge tableau beneath a neon sign that reads, “It’s always 5 o’clock at Niche.” And where in the world did that stunning checkout counter come from? It’s sort of an insult to refer to it thusly, as it resembles the sleek reception areas at some of the chicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in. I made reference to the department stores and emporiums of yesteryear earlier, but the comparison is even more valid during the holidays. While Niche certainly offers the option to make purchases via their website, it would be a shame to rob yourself of the immersive sensory experience they’ve created in their brick-and-mortar stores. It’s something that’s not lost on their loyal customers. “Teenagers who used to come in with their parents are now coming in looking for furniture for their own homes and bringing their kids to see the Christmas trees and pick out ornaments, just like they used to,” Steve marveled. “So we’re seeing a second generation. It’s something we never considered, but it’s a wonderful feeling.” While they’re fully engrossed in the holiday season, Steve and Jeff are already excited about their big plans for Easter, Mardi Gras and future sip and shop events. Alliyah Brooks is an evolving leader and strong advocate for education. She has studied education for the past four years, with an emphasis on special education. Alliyah inspires children of all ages to have vision, purpose, and a can-do attitude. She is passionate about making learning fun, engaging, and inclusive. She has been welcomed into interactive learning environments. She serves the Children’s Museum of St. Tammany and the parish as a substitute teacher and mentor. Alliyah coordinates and facilitates various activities for the children and guests that visit the museum on field trips, summer camps, and during outreach opportunities. Alliyah has served as the lead summer camp counselor for the Children’s Museum of St. Tammany, hosting NASA’s Astro Camp. She loves to see children create, imagine, and explore in the galleries of the Children’s Museum. With a servant’s perspective, she has participated in the Slidell Boys and Girls Club’s Youth of the Year, Salmen High School’s mentoring programs, Confident Women United, and Celebrate Recovery’s Celebration Station. She has attended the Association of Children’s Museums’ annual conference, where she was inspired with new ways to meet the needs of children in St. Tammany Parish. Anne Doussan Chiang believes in the value of serving others. From working with the children and families of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital while attending Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, to helping Tibetan refugees in India as she earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Tulane University, Anne jumped at the chance to get involved. As Anne explored ways to merge her career path and the desire to help others, she found the answer in medical social work, first completing her practicum at the Tulane Abdominal Transplant Institute, and then assisting patients who suffered from stroke and heart failure at East Jefferson General Hospital. Currently, Anne is a stay-at-home parent to Ruthie, 19 months, and Leo, born on October 18th. While parenting two children under the age of two keeps her busy, Anne continues to prioritize her civic duties. Since 2015, Anne served on the Board of Directors at Boys Town Louisiana. Her time as Board Chair ended this past July, yet Anne continues to act as a board member and assist the organization as it helps children and families throughout Louisiana.

In her role as Assistant Manager, Cate is responsible for overseeing loan administration tasks after loan approval, which includes managing teams across Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, and West Virginia. She began her journey with First Guaranty Bank in 2011 where she discovered her love of lending. She now takes pride in working with the newest generation of bankers in her department, helping them grow and learn more about the world of loan administration. Cate recently completed her first year of the Graduate School of Banking at LSU with plans to graduate in 2025. She is also a graduate of the 2022 class of Leadership Tangipahoa. Cate was raised in Ponchatoula where her family roots go back seven generations to the founding of the town. A native New Orleanian, Christina Pappion was always fascinated by the city’s rich culture and talent. When Christina was young, her mother began working at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Growing up around world renowned musical talent from all over the country fueled her growing passion for the arts. In her youth, Christina won many Art and Talent competitions throughout the city. After graduation, she received an Art scholarship to Xavier University and continued her education at the University of New Orleans. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts, she decided to work for two local nonprofit art organizations teaching art to the youth in the inner city community of New Orleans. After getting married and having her two beautiful girls, Christina decided to start her own business creating live paintings at events and weddings. In 2015, Pappion Artistry was born! Colby began his career with Allstate in 2017, and quickly learned the value of honest advice when it came to protecting the financial future of Louisiana residents. Grady attended Holy Ghost Catholic School, St. Thomas Aquinas, and he earned his undergraduate degree in Construction Management from LSU in 2009. Grady’s connection to Covey Rise Lodge, a hunting preserve near the farm, began in 2006 when he guided hunts on weekends to help support himself through college. He has always enjoyed hunting and fishing, this strengthened his love for the outdoors. After graduating from LSU, he realized that traditional office work wasn’t his calling. In 2011, he started farming at Covey Rise, which was only 20-acres at the time, it quickly doubled and now almost 120 acres. In 2013, he became a partner in the farm. Covey Rise Farms provides local, specialty vegetables to restaurants in the greater New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas. They also offer a produce club where customers can purchase boxes of produce, along with local products like cheese, meats, handmade pastas, and flowers, all conveniently delivered or available at pickup locations. Grady is active in the community and donates his time and farm products to many needed causes in the area.

Heather Levin has gone from homeless to homeowner… While Heather may have lived in a shelter with her children, a place she never imagined for herself, the accomplishments she has achieved, since then are remarkable. Through her work for Family Promise of St. Tammany, the very program that helped her out of homelessness, Ms. Levin has grown, both personally and professionally. In less than 5 years, Ms. Levin has completed one degree, and has been promoted several times. Her first position with Family Promise was as an Administrative Assistant, but she has also taken on the role of Mentoring Specialist due to her experience from going through the program and her newfound experience working for the program. She is currently the Associate Director and Bookkeeper for Family Promise. Heather has also joined the Commission on Families in St. Tammany Parish, where she serves as Treasurer. Most recently, Heather is part of St. Tammany Parish Leadership Class of 2024. The biggest accomplishment of Ms. Levin’s story is the part that she worked with Habit for Humanity to build her children their forever home.

In addition, Jay has been heavily involved in STHS’s NonPharmacological Opioid Alternatives program along with a heavy collaboration of a multi-disciplinary effort to address the Opioid Epidemic going on to present this program at the local, state, and national levels. Continuing on his journey through innovation, he completed his registry in musculoskeletal ultrasound (RMSK) in November 2021. When Jay is not working, he enjoys spending time and traveling with his wife and three kids.

Jessica Bennett resides in Hammond with her husband Ben and two children, Claire and Owen. As North Oaks Health System’s Chief Ancillary Officer, Jessica serves as a community liaison helping to ensure exceptional healthcare for the Northshore. She belongs to the Louisiana Hospital Association and Louisiana Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She serves as the vice-chairman of the Tangipahoa Tourism Board of Directors and secretary of the Lion Athletics Association for Southeastern Louisiana University. She also is a past Tangipahoa Chamber Board of Directors member and 2021 graduate of Leadership Tangipahoa. She launched her North Oaks career in 2011 as an occupational therapist, and her career trajectory has continued to rise ever since. In 2009, John embarked on a new chapter by joining Apple Inc., taking on various roles, including leadership and business titles. Justin Brien is the proud owner of Natural Movement Solutions, located in downtown Covington. He has a unique education in Osteopathic Manual Therapy and exercise training. His manual therapy techniques and training methodology are deeply influenced by a French Osteopath with whom he studied for over a decade. Justin combines specific reinforcement and stretching exercises with a European Osteopathic approach to Manual Therapy, aiming to restore harmony to the body. He is best known for his ELDOA exercise classes. ELDOA is a French technique that specifically aims to create space in the joints. Beyond his practice, Justin also serves as an instructor for the ELDOA educational program. Professionally, he has worked closely with NFL players and notable NBA head coaches, including Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors and Willie Green of the New Orleans Pelicans. She attended Delgado Community College where she received her Associates Degree in Business Administration; Kelsie then went on to Southeastern Louisiana University to study Sports Management and complete her Bachelor’s Degree in 2016. Kelsie began her youth sports career as an intern at Coquille Parks and Recreation during her undergraduate programs and fulfilled her childhood dream by accepting a full time position in a short seven months. She currently serves as the Assistant Director of Programs for Coquille Parks and Recreation where she oversees over 3,500 youth participants within a multitude of sports and continues to stay involved by educating and coaching young athletes. Through the National Alliance for Youth Sports(NAYS) and National Recreation and Park Association(NRPA), Kelsie continually elevates her education through certifications such as a Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA) and as a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP). Kelsie strives daily to not only provide the Northshore with a diverse and inclusive sports, but she aims to provide all youth athletes with an educational sports atmosphere. Her passion radiates through her accomplishments and continuous growth for the future of local athletes. Kelsie’s highest ambition is to continue to be engaged, and flourish alongside the families within Northshore sports.

Meredith Alvarez grew up in Mandeville, and there, attended Fontainebleau High. She started teaching swim lessons and quickly discovered her passion for teaching. She moved on to LSU where she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees and became a math teacher. Having taught at Lakeshore High School since its beginnings 14 years ago, she has had the unique opportunity to watch her cherished school grow into the amazing institution it is today. Meredith teaches Algebra II and AP Calculus and considers herself blessed with the opportunity to mold young minds and help boost their self confidence in mathematics. She has always considered her favorite part of teaching to be the lifelong relationships she makes with her students, and she finds this too being the Swim Sponsor at Lakeshore. Meredith has helped grow the swim team over the past 14 years into the DII powerhouse it is today, including three consecutive state runner-up finishes. Whether it be in arithmetic, athletics, or anything in between, Meredith loves to watch those she has taught grow, become stronger, and make her proud. He became a parishioner of Our lady of the Lake Church where he would marry his wife, Jenny. While their family grew, Mike ascended through the fire department becoming a paramedic, completing a nationally recognized elite firefighter course, obtaining numerous technical rescuer certifications, and a degree in fire science from Columbia State University. As a child Mike only wanted to compete. No matter the competition, setting goals and achieving them was an addiction. A 2002 recipient of the St. Bernard Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship being one highlight. After becoming a father to Mason (14), Matthew (11) and Molly (9), Mike quickly realized that the feeling of achieving a goal, paled in comparison to helping others achieve their own goals. This led to the start of a local baseball organization whose mission is to teach young athletes the game of life through competitive baseball, without the cost of expensive academies. Mike enjoyed coaching and mentoring so much that in 2020 he left the fire house to become a training and safety officer at his department. He currently spends his days training recruit and incumbent firefighters, and most evenings coaching kids from 8 to 14 years old.

Sherrard Crespo is a licensed clinical social worker who obtained her Masters Degree in Social Work from Louisiana State University in 2017. Her professional background is highlighted by her work with suicide education, prevention, intervention, and postvention. Sherrard is currently employed with VIA LINK in the position of Director of Outreach and Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana where her current duties include: clinical oversight of VIA LINK’s 24/7 contact center, community outreach and education on VIA LINK services as well as specialized skills and information on suicide response, crisis intervention, grief, and trauma. Cenzo Caronna is a Louisiana native with a background in engineering and a passion for entrepreneurship. Raised in Mandeville and an alumnus of Louisiana State University with a degree in Biological Engineering (2017), Cenzo spent the 4 years following graduation immersed in the advancement of earlystage tissue engineering companies working in R&D, project management, and commercialization. In 2022, Cenzo returned to his roots, founding Thrivvy, The Search Engine for Groceries, with an aim not just to grow a business but to also build meaningful technology from his hometown. Beyond leading Thrivvy, Cenzo is an integral part of the Northshore’s startup ecosystem. He serves as the Entrepreneur in Residence and Program Manager for the STartUP Northshore initiative under St. Tammany Corporation. During his free time, Cenzo loves traveling, hiking, and spending time his wife, Erin, and their dog Scout. His favorite thing about being the EIR and Program Manager for STartUP Northshore is seeing the innovative ideas being developed by the founders he works with and seeing their business models take shape as they become successful ventures.

After working for the NYC Department of Finance in the Sales Tax Auditing Division for 4 years, the allure of Covington drew her back home. The holiday season is one of the most cheerful times of year. This season gives us all a moment to enjoy quality time with our loved ones and spread joy throughout our community. As the year concludes, we reflect on our year and what we’ve accomplished and look forward to our goals for the new year. 2023 was full of proud moments that were only possible because of the hard work of our employees, Team Tammany, and the support of our passionate citizens. As we have done for the last four years, we centered our work around our citizens’ needs. I am proud to share that I have proposed a 3rd consecutive record infrastructure investment to efficiently support our communities for generations When I took office in 2020, I inherited a situation where development was outpacing infrastructure. We slowed down development, while investing in our roads, bridges and drainage. We are starting to see the benefits of our work, but there is more to be done. This year, the public gave feedback on our building practices and standards, the Unified Development Code, which we rewrote to align with your values. We have also completed the draft of our Multi-Modal Transportation Plan, which identifies new roads and improves traffic and safety on existing ones. It brings me immense joy and gratitude that I will humbly serve as your Parish President for the next four years. I am excited to work with a new Council for the benefit of all of our citizens. Just as we will, I encourage you all to celebrate the joys of the holiday season, while reflecting on your accomplishments and growth in 2023. I wish you a holiday season full of peace, love, joy and prosperity. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! As we enter the holiday season of giving, I want to take this opportunity to highlight some of the ways our employees give back year-round. We just wrapped up a very successful October, where we once again partnered with the St. Tammany Cancer Center for the United in Pink Campaign, raising thousands of dollars and bringing hope and awareness to so many women across the parish. We also partnered with our local food banks to donate money and canned goods raised through employee dress down days and our always successful Jack-o-Lantern Jamboree. In November, our employees traded their handcuffs for hammers once again and volunteered for another build day with Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West. That same month our deputies put together and delivered Thanksgiving baskets to needy families in our community. The Deputy’s Association, which is funded through employee contributions, purchased the food for these baskets. This month, the Deputy’s Association will host its biggest event of the year – our Annual Senior Holiday Dinner. On December 11, deputies will feed and entertain more than 1,500 of our local senior citizens. During other events throughout the year, deputies assisted in dog adoption events, assisting St. Tammany Parish Animal Services in finding homes for numerous pets; hosted Back to School events, making sure local children have the school supplies and information they need to have a successful school year; and put on Shop with a Cop, where selected local children are provided with a shopping spree during Christmas time. Throughout the year, deputies support the Special Olympics and the Senior Olympics through special events and fundraising efforts on their time off, and partner with STARC every Mardi Gras to collect beads which in turn provides work skills and financial assistance for many special needs residents in our community. And, last but not least, let us not forget our Reserves. These men and women donate countless hours, working parades and festivals, keeping our overtime in check and freeing up full-time deputies to patrol our streets. I am so proud of all of our deputies who not only chose a career of service but seek out additional ways they can give back when off the clock. EDGE December 2023 | January 2024

he new president of Southeastern Louisiana University, Dr. William Wainwright, is no stranger to higher education on the Northshore. Before being appointed Southeastern’s 15th president by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System, he spent nearly a quarter century as a higher education administrator. His most recent stint prior to this appointment was as Chancellor at Hammond’s Northshore Technical Community College (NTCC).

Staying True to the Mission When Southeastern was ﬁrst established in 1925, its mission was to serve the educational, economic, and cultural development of the region. Those tenets remain vital, and when Wainwright assumed the SLU presidency, he brought

longstanding ties he’d developed with people all over the Northshore. He believes in casting a wide net into the small rural communities dotting the landscape of southeast Louisiana. He’s talked to alumni from the Bogalusa area who told him that back in the 70s, they were only able to attend the university because of the bus that ferried students daily back and forth from St. Tammany and Washington Parishes. To Wainwright, stories like that stress the importance of the institution to many residents in Louisiana’s rural communities. Both the current superintendent of the St. Helena Parish School District and the superintendent of the Bogalusa City School District are Southeastern alumni, which is indicative of the university’s connectivity to the surrounding parishes.

Collaboration, Engagement Strengthen Ties Wainwright also chairs the St. Tammany Corporation’s Board of Commissioners. He’s excited by how these endeavors solidify the regional touch, like the recent NSpire Startup Slam that took place at Hammond’s Columbia Theatre and was sponsored in part by STartUP Northshore. That opportunity gave regional entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their products to a panel of judges. Wainwright stressed how business alumni seek further opportunities to engage with SLU graduates who choose to remain in the area. One of his goals as university president is to broaden the outreach and discover new people and talents in the region. He also loves to hear stories from alumni, from how-they-met anecdotes to the way community mentors and faculty impacted the grads’ career trajectories and the longterm relationships that developed from these university ties.

Building a Culture of Future Forward Wainwright’s guiding mantra is “future forward” as he continues to build from established culture. He wants Southeastern to be on the cutting edge, ensuring the needs of present students are satisﬁed while still planning for the future of the university. He cites two examples of future forward manifestng now — the groundbreaking renovation of D. Vickers Hall and the future Robin Roberts Broadcasting Center. Both futurefocused activities and investments will prepare graduates with programs in strategic communication. Wainwright noted the signiﬁcant interest from industries to support investments in essential and dynamic communication, including the potential pros and cons of AI as it rapidly evolves. Dr. Wainwright and his wife, Misty, are committed to making Southeastern a globally competitive portal that provides students with state-of-the-art, nationally ranked programs serving the region, state, nation and world.

Nutcracker STORY STORY AMY VERGES

veryone has heard of The Nutcracker ballet, right? But if you’re like most, the story is quite puzzling. I mean the opening scene is a lovely Christmas Eve party in a grand drawing room, but the next thing you know there’s a nutcracker fighting a huge mouse. How did we get there? And what’s with that big guy with the black cape? The ballet choreographed by George Balanchine is based on Alexander Dumas’ revision of the fable, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written by E.T.A. Hoffman in the 1800s. The opening scene is set in the beautifully decorated home of Dr. and Frau Stahlbaum on Christmas Eve. Their children, Clara and Fritz, eagerly await the arrival of their guests. As the home fills with holiday cheer, parents and children alike take turns dancing for each other. Suddenly the excitement stops as a large, mysterious, darkly cloaked man enters the room. Herr Drosselmeier, Clara’s godfather, is quickly recognized, and the children are intrigued. He entertains them with magic tricks, and brings out two large presents. Inside, the children find life-sized dolls, which begin to dance at Drosselmeier’s command! After their performance, it’s time to open gifts. Beautiful dolls, toy guns, hobbies horses, and drums are enjoyed by all, but Drosselmeier’s gift to Clara is the coveted one, a beautifully decorated nutcracker. Building the excitement, Drosselmeier shows the party guests how the nutcracker works. As he hands the gift to Clara, Fritz becomes jealous and grabs it. A tug-of-war between Clara and Fritz doesn’t end well, and the nutcracker breaks in two as it hits the floor. Devastated, Clara begins to cry and is consoled by her friends. While Fritz is reprimanded, Drosselmeier quietly picks up the broken pieces magically repairing it. He presents it back to Clara who is immediately overjoyed. Dr. and Frau Stahlbaum are relieved. The night is saved! It becomes late in the evening, and the children are getting tired. The guests slowly depart thanking the Stahlbaums for such a wonderful party. Everyone heads to bed, but the excitement has been too much for Clara. She sneaks back downstairs to check on her nutcracker. Cuddling up on the couch with her gift, she drifts off to sleep. The grandfather clock strikes midnight waking her up. She

looks around the room confused. Is that Drosselmeier on top of the clock? Is the tree growing? The toys around the tree begin to come to life. Frightened, Clara hides behind the tree. She quietly watches as an army of mice appears. Little toy soldiers prepare for battle, then Clara notices her nutcracker has become life-sized. He leads his soldiers in a battle against the mice. Suddenly, the Mouse King appears. He has seven heads and is huge compared to his army. He draws his sword and begins to clash with the Nutcracker. Clara watches as the Mouse King and his mice overtake the Nutcracker. In desperation, Clara removes her slipper and throws it hitting the Mouse King in the head. Her distraction allows for the Nutcracker to gain the upper hand, and he kills the Mouse King. The Nutcracker and all of his soldiers celebrate and thank Clara for her bravery. As quickly as the celebration began, it ends with the Nutcracker’s transformation into a Prince. He escorts Clara into an enchanted winter wonderland where they are greeted by dancing snowflakes as they make their way to the Land of Sweets. So far so good? Now that you know about Act I, we can move to Act II, which is known as the Land of Sweets. (Keep in mind, we are in Clara’s dream…she’s really still asleep on the couch in the Stahlbaum’s drawing room) The Prince and Clara arrive in the Land of Sweets where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and dancing angels.

The Nutcracker Prince tells her about the battle, the terrible Mouse King, and Clara’s bravery. Grateful for their victory, the Sugar Plum Fairy prepares a special celebration. As the guests of honor, she leads them to two beautiful thrones where they sit and watch the delightful performances of the Spanish Chocolate, Arabian Coffee, Chinese Tea, French Marzipan, Russian Trepak, and Mother Ginger’s Italian Polichinelles. Afterwards, the Dewdrop and her flowers waltz gracefully honoring their guests. Finally, The Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier dance together in what is called a “Pas de Deux” or dance duet. As Clara’s dream comes to an end, all of the dancers join together in a spectacular finale. Act II ends finding Clara waking up on Christmas morning in the drawing room with her Nutcracker tucked in at her side. You may find slightly different versions out there, but traditionally, that’s the Nutcracker in a nutshell! Much of the charm of downtown Covington is our historical 19th and 20th century architecture. Much of the vibrancy of downtown Covington is our outstanding cuisine. Often the two collide creating a charming and vibrant experience. The Seiler Bar and Columbia Street Tap Room are located in the 20th century building that was once the Seiler Hotel. Meribo, Coﬀee Rani and New Orleans Seafood and Spirits rise above 19th century Lee Lane. The historic Southern Hotel is home to The Gloriette. Many of us old timers recall when the best oyster po-boy in the world was served at Nathan’s Bar on Gibson … which today Mattina Bella calls home. Arguably, the best donuts on the north shore are found at Butter Krisp located in what has historically been Butter Krisp. Buster’s Place Restaurant and Oyster Bar operates from the same space where the owner’s great grandmother once served as one of America’s ﬁrst female insurance brokers and is named for the grandfather that continued Aubert Insurance there as well. The Greyhound is in the same building that once housed the Greyhound bus station. Del Porto Ristorante was once Hebert’s Drugs. Before that, it was the Frederick–Planche Ford Dealership and originally was a silent movie theater (Park Theater) complete with burlesque stage. LOLA, with its train dining car, is in the “new” train depot – constructed in the 1920’s to replace the old 19th century train depot on Gibson Street. This old train station was the destination of Homer Plessy in 1892 … the trip he never took. As a child, Lee Harvey Oswald resided on Vermont Street. Some say at today’s Valencia. Some say it was next door. Culinary artists abound in Covington. Some just happen to be in delightful, historical, architectural gems. Together they make Covington … Covalicious.

We have already had a great fall in the City of Mandeville! Our Fall Mandeville Live! free concert series at the Trailhead was a huge success and the bands were amazing! Concerts continue at the Dew Drop with remaining dates of Saturday, December 2 (Charmaine Neville, Community Gospel Choir) and December 16 (J. Monque ‘D Blues Revue). Also MARK YOUR CALENDAR for holiday related events including the Old Mandeville Business Association’s holiday sip and stroll on Friday, December 1 and the Christmas Past Festival on Saturday, December 9. The City of Mandeville will also put on our annual Winter on the Water Christmas parade followed by the lighting of the Christmas Tree on Saturday, December 2. I am proud to announce that the City of Mandeville will partner with the Northshore Jewish Congregation for the first public Menorah Lighting in Mandeville on Friday, December 8. Lastly, a great place to obtain early holiday gifts is our Mandeville Trailhead Market which is held every Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Drainage improvement projects are currently underway in the Montgomery Street area of Old Mandeville and will soon be completed. Drainage improvement projects will then move to the Fontainebleau subdivision and begin later this year. One of the major components and suggestions of the recently received Mandeville Resiliency Plan is the purchase of property and the creation of Stormwater Parks for increased capacity. We are currently in the process of purchasing property in the heart of Old Mandeville for one of the first Stormwater Parks! Mandeville continues to sell itself in terms of new business development. If you have not heard, the old Tiffany Lanes Bowling Alley on Highway 22 has sold, and a new Bowling Alley proprietor is beginning the process to renovate it into a new family-friendly bowling alley to open in February 2024. It will be called Paradise Alley and will have a stage for live music, food, an arcade, and 31 lanes including 5 VIP lanes. This will be a major addition to the family entertainment sector of our local economy, and we are so excited! We indeed have a great team at the City of Mandeville! They came for fruit and left with the whole dang vineyard.

That about sums up how husband-andwife team Neil Gernon and Monica Bourgeois wound up as the new proprietors of the parcel of Northshore land formerly known as Pontchartrain Vineyards. In addition to rebranding it as Wild Bush Farms, they’re planning some big changes, while also maintaining some beloved traditions. Nestled on 34 acres in the rolling hills of Bush just north of Covington, the origins of the vineyard date back to the early 1990s. That’s when previous owner, John Seago, planted the ﬁrst vines, thereby resurrecting a local winemaking tradition that is said to have begun in St. Tammany Parish in the late 19th century, only to be quashed by the passing of Prohibition in 1920. Over the years, Seago put his heart and soul into it. Along with producing signature wines with playful, Louisiana-centric names like Le Trolley, Roux St. Louis, Zydeco Rosato and Rouge Militaire, he launched the hugely popular Jazz’n the Vines concert series, which locals still ﬂock to every spring and fall. But nothing lasts forever. After decades of dedication, he decided to put Pontchartrain Vineyards up for sale a few years ago, leaving its future in limbo. And along came Neil and Monica. “We were just hoping to buy some local fruit to experiment with,” Neil explained when we spoke recently, still sounding a bit stunned by the unexpected turn of events. “But we immediately noticed it was a mess and the vines had been neglected. When we found out it was for sale, Monica - I like to call her “Lady Fantastic” jumped at the idea and said we should buy it and start replanting.”

And so they have. But before we get ahead of ourselves, who exactly are these intrepid vintners who are literally putting down roots in rural St. Tammany? To understand the native Louisianians’ vision for the place, it’s helpful to trace their path to the Northshore, which started decades ago in the French Quarter. “I was beverage director at Dickie Brennan’s Bourbon House when we met,” Neil told me. “I was very into wines, and Monica got into them, too. We ran bottle shops for a while and got into distribution, then we started a project in Napa called Vending Machine Wines.” My brain immediately leapt to one of my favorite holiday traditions: enjoying the majesty of the Ritz-Carlton-New Orleans’ elaborate Christmas displays, whilst also beholding the magical prosecco-dispensing machine adjacent to the Davenport Lounge. Please tell me that’s a sensation that’ll soon be sweeping the nation. But, alas no. Neil explained that their company was so-named because the labels looked like candy wrappers and they thought VMW sounded sort of high end. My dashed fantasies aside, this venture allowed them to really dive into the winemaking business. They started with classic Napa varietals, but soon began to play around with ﬂavor proﬁles, experimenting with less oaky cabernets and chardonnays, interesting varietal blends, and even low-alcohol options. The timing of that fateful trip to Bush turned out to be especially serendipitous, as Monica had recently spent her pandemic-induced downtime taking online farming classes through the University of California, Davis. Her newfound know-how and their combined penchant for experimentation and ingenuity are crucial to not only creating intriguing new wines, but also to addressing the challenges of

growing wine grapes in the south. Of particular concern is something called Pierce’s Disease, a vine-killing scourge caused by a nasty bacteria that flourishes in places with mild winters. This is no simple endeavor, but the synergistic duo seems to be harnessing exactly what’s needed to make it successful: passion, patience and planning. “The new vines are growing fast. We’re very excited and we’re experimenting with hybrids and indigenous wines. But it’ll take three or four years until we’re able to use the grapes we’re growing here.” In the meantime, they’re relying on the very common practice of using fruit grown elsewhere. When I spoke with Neil, he was overseeing the processing of the grapes they’re currently growing in California while Monica was faithfully tending to their burgeoning crops at home. He was quick to point out, however, that all the wine will be finished, bottled, produced and labeled right here in Bush. So, what can we expect from Wild Bush wines? “Sweet is just not our style. We’ll keep one sweet wine and we’ll sell frosés for fun at the concerts, but otherwise, we’re going in the opposite direction of the other wines that have previously been produced here. We’ve changed the name to reflect that, and also because we’re proud that it’s made here in Bush.” Neil and Monica are starting off with 15 new wines with a variety of flavor profiles. This new crop of wines sports technicolor labels to match the whimsical names and descriptions, but the contents are serious business.

SOME OF THE ONES CURRENTLY OFFERED INCLUDE: • Like Swimming. A carbonic chillable red made with mission grapes. Lots of fun fruit with carnival food allure (cotton candy and taﬀy) and ﬁnishes like a hibiscus tea. •

Hot Biscuits in Love Sparkling. A Pet Nat (naturally sparkling)-style bubbly with tropical notes that ﬁnishes with nice acidity.

•

Creature Feature. A dark, brooding blend of Teroldego, Petite Sirah and Syrah.

•

The Kid’s Got Heart. An Oregon Pinot Noir/Syrah blend brimming with brambly strawberry and smokey bacon fat notes.

•

Tornados in Space. A northern Italian varietal with vibrant color that could light up a Led Zeppelin poster with jammy raspberry and blackberry notes and soft tannins.

They are also planning to introduce some indigenous wines, so along with grapes, they’re growing blueberries and orchard fruit. One can only imagine the fun they’ll have naming and describing those. It’s no secret that the South is not exactly renowned for its ﬁne wines, so Neil enjoys surprising people with the quality of their product. “I love turning an eye-roller into a ‘holy cow, this is unexpectedly good’ believer!”

But tasting is believing, so he’s keen to invite wine lovers from near and far to visit the property’s recently updated tasting room to discover it for themselves. “Come to the concerts, they’re so much fun and have great energy. But come do the tastings, too. For $10, you can sample six different wines, plus hear stories and learn all about the process.” That’s right, music lovers. Neil and Monica are well aware that Jazz’n the Vines is a much-beloved, major draw for the vineyard, and they plan to keep it going. “We’re definitely continuing the concert tradition with some really cool bands,” Neil assured me. “The only big change is no more traffic jams! You used to get checked in from your car, which caused a huge back up. Now, you’re guided to a parking spot first, then checked in.” They’ve also launched a wine club that not only delivers a rotating selection of wine to members’ doorsteps, but also provides discounts for additional purchases, plus access to concerts, tastings, release parties and other happenings. Next up on the Jazz’n The Vines concert calendar are Pine Leaf Boys on December 2. As we close the book on 2023 and prepare to start a new year (and a new term), I am unabashedly excited about the future of Tangipahoa Parish! Everywhere we go, we hear great things about our parish. We thank longtime Councilmen Carlo Bruno and Trent Forrest for their service to our parish, and we also congratulate Councilwoman Kim Coates on her rise to the House of Representatives. We will celebrate our incoming administration in ceremonies on January 8. Over the next few months, I’ll share more of our goals and plans for 2024. One thing is certain—we will continue to strive to make Tangipahoa the Best Parish in the State!

St. Tammany NOW highlights who and what makes the St. Tammany business community thrive and illustrates the opportunities to diversify and fortify our economy. On Friday, November 3, just as National Entrepreneurship Month was getting underway, St. Tammany Corporation’s entrepreneurial ecosystem building initiative STartUP Northshore hosted the ﬁrst-ever pitch competition to take

place on this side of the lake: the NSpire Startup Slam. The spectacular live showdown took place against the backdrop of the historic Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in Downtown Hammond, with four exceptional startup founders vying for a game-changing prize package of cash and services valued at more than $60,000. The evening kicked oﬀ with a lively networking reception featuring live music from the Reginald Sanders Jazz Trio, hors d’oeuvres from Cate Street Seafood Station, and drinks served by Crescent Bar. Throughout the night, the vibrancy of the Northshore’s entrepreneurial ecosystem was on full display, from the camaraderie of the founders and startup

Kinkz $60,000 Slam enthusiasts coming together from across the region, to the incredible ideas that took center stage during the pitches, to the crescendo of the night when, after much anticipation, the winner was announced. Ahead of being invited to pitch on stage before a live audience and panel of esteemed judges, finalists had to make their way through two rounds of a rigorous application process and independent panel review. From a pool of about two dozen applicants, only 12 were selected to compete in the semifinals, and from there, judges chose four finalists to advance to the main stage. In the days and weeks leading up to the NSpire Startup Slam, each startup received one-onone professional pitch coaching from Abbey Kish, Founder & CEO of Kish Consulting and three-time national champion speaker. The four startups that earned spots at the final competition represented a range of creative, original, and diverse ideas that reinforce STartUP Northshore’s vision that the Northshore can become the premier destination in the Gulf South for entrepreneurs to startup, scale, and grow their businesses to be successful. 11th Haus, a modern alchemy and wellness brand based in Covington, is all about connection, creating highquality pheromone products to enhance relationships, self-discovery, and connection with the world, inspired by astrology’s 11th house themes. Kinkz, based in Slidell, is described as a passion project dedicated to assisting women on their journey to embracing their natural hair and building their confidence. Kinkz simplifies hair care for women with curly hair with easy-touse styling tools, including innovative Kinkz Hair Ties, for quick and damage-free styling in just five seconds. uLand, an Australian-founded educational tech startup, offers engaging disaster preparation and sustainability education through storytelling and visualization, making learning impactful and user-friendly. Unique XP, based in Slidell, redefines fan engagement through personalized, real-time micro-experiences and itineraries, transforming passions into extraordinary adventures.

A panel of five business leaders from across the Northshore and the Greater New Orleans Region served as judges and scored each contestant on categories including concept, business model, market, traction, team, and commitment to and potential impact for the Northshore. The panel of judges included Jon Atkinson, CEO of The Idea Village; Caitlin Hunter, Corporate Affairs Representative at Chevron; Marty Mayer, President & CEO of Stirling Properties; Robby Miller, Tangipahoa Parish President; and Sabrina Short, Founder & CEO of NOLAVATE Black. All four founders made compelling cases for their businesses, with Kinkz emerging as the ultimate winner and Founder & CEO Alana Scott walking away with the grand prize. “Gratitude fills our hearts as we embark on this exciting journey, leveling up our business with the invaluable resources from NSpire Startup Slam,” said Scott. “The experience of being surrounded by incredible, competitive founders has been nothing short of inspiring, propelling us toward our limitless potential.”

The prize package that Scott walked away with included $25,000 in cash f ding matched by high-quality in-kind services, mentorship opportunities, and access to a network of investors and industry professionals valued at over $35,000. ABOUT AMANDA AND DANNY In every issue, EDGE of the Lake invites a local chef or restaurateur to visit another eatery on the Northshore. Amanda Savona and her husband, Danny Savona, have owned and operated restaurants together for 24 years. They currently run the Crazy Pig Southern Kitchen in Mandeville and Covington. These comfy, cozy eateries are all about Southern hospitality and serving up breakfast, brunch and lunch all day, infusing fresh ingredients and New Orleans ﬂair into classic, old-school recipes. The breakfast and brunch menus feature their signature omelets and Benedicts, fresh-baked biscuits, a wide variety of sweet and savory dishes, plus mimosas and pepperinfused Bloody Mary’s. Regional favorites, like po-boys and shrimp and grits, are offered at lunch, along with burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads and more. Plus, they have a full cocktail, beer and wine

I’d been to lunch at Lola before, but this was my first-time having dinner. Even on a Friday night, it was easy to get to the location in downtown Covington and there was plenty of parking. The building used to be a train depot and after being greeted promptly, we were seated in the caboose. It’s super cute, cozy, and decorated beautifully. It has a bird theme, including in its Art Deco wallpaper, and the gorgeous roses on the tables gave it a romantic feel. They also have a wonderful playlist with a Ray Charles vibe. Our server’s name was Wyatt and he was knowledgeable, efficient and patient, which was nice because we took our time reviewing the menu, which is very Southern, but fresh. They have their own eclectic, creative style, and they incorporate a lot of produce and a variety of sauces and dressings into their dishes. We started with the chicken and andouille gumbo and it was very good with a nice, dark roux. A lot of love went into that gumbo, and instead of rice, it was served with crab boil potato salad. We also had tuna crudo served in wontons, which was super fresh with lots of good textures and the right amount of heat. For one of our entrees, we chose the Korean barbecue flank steak, which was cooked perfectly and the seasoning was on-point. We also chose the butter beans and ham hock special. The beans were fresh, well seasoned and cooked perfectly, and the ham hock just fell apart. It was all really well executed. The wine list had a good variety of European as well as domestic wines, and we selected a Sauvignon Blanc with our appetizers and a Tempranillo with our entrees. We noticed a lot of amazing fresh fruit cocktails with satsuma and watermelon being served, but we opted for the beautiful German chocolate cake. If you’re looking for a special place to indulge in dessert, this is the one. I would definitely recommend Lola for an anniversary or a romantic date night. You can tell the chef pays attention to the details and everything really shines.
