The Northshore Media Group family recently came together to celebrate the end of a fantastic year with our annual holiday party! Staff from McComb, Brookhaven, Hammond, and Covington gathered for laughter, good cheer, and maybe a little too much fun for some. It’s always a joy to reflect on the hard work we’ve done and the connections we’ve made, and this gathering was no exception. It’s moments like these that remind us how lucky we are to work with such an amazing team. As we dive into the new year, we carry that same energy into this issue, spotlighting the best of the Northshore, including the winners of our Readers’ Choice Awards.

This issue is packed with stories that highlight the creativity and innovation thriving in our community. One of our favorite features shines a spotlight on Jacquie Inda Hood , a local artist who has turned her incredible talent into designing custom, eye-catching hats. I had the privilege of visiting Jacquie on my 27th wedding anniversary, and she crafted a beautiful hat that perfectly captured the spirit of the occasion. Her work is a testament to how art and personal expression can bring so much joy.

We’re also diving into Palette Northshore, an exciting new hub for entrepreneurs that’s going to become a cornerstone for creativity and collaboration on the Northshore. Also in this issue we included a full social section celebrating the vibrant events and faces of our region.

As we move into this new year, we hope you enjoy exploring all the stories that make the Northshore such a remarkable place to call home.

CELEBRATING OUR PLATINUM ANNIVERSARY

How the Northshore gets well – and stays well – has changed in MANY ways since we first opened our doors as St. Tammany Hospital 70 years ago, but much has stayed the same. We still treat every patient as if they were family. Since 1954, St. Tammany Health System has been on your side, on this side of the lake. And like our patients, we just keep getting better.

A CULTURE OF CARING FOR 70 YEARS AND...

Jacquie Inda Hood

A stronger heart. A stronger you.

Danny, a New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame wide receiver (1967-1973), faced a battle off the field with atrial fibrillation. After undergoing two cardiac ablations in Chicago, Danny returned to New Orleans and sought treatment from Ochsner’s expert cardiology team led by Dr. Sammy Khatib. Now, he’s back to speed walking, biking, and cardio training, reclaiming his health and vitality.

It’s officially time to Laissez les bon temps rouler!

There is nothing quite like Mardi Gras in St. Tammany Parish, featuring our vibrant culture, krewes and celebrations with family and friends. As we gather in our community to parade, I wish all of our krewes, marching groups and families a safe, happy Mardi Gras. See you all soon on the parade route!

2025 is off to a fast start for St. Tammany Parish Government. We are continuing to build on the pillars of my administration: infrastructure investments, smarter growth, driving our economy and enhancing our quality of life.

This Spring, we are taking on a new challenge: restructure our tax system. Our citizens have spoken, and we heard them loud and clear – they pay enough taxes. You want your government to live within its means to serve you, and I wholeheartedly agree.

On March 29, 2025, our citizens will make a major decision about the future of our community. We have proposed restructuring an existing sales tax to allow us to accomplish two monumental tasks: continuing to prioritize our record infrastructure investments and fund our public safety agencies. Roads, bridges, drainage and our safety are among the most important contributors to our quality of life, and we must protect that.

This is not a new tax, nor is it an increase. Regardless of how you vote, your taxes will not change. This is an effort to protect our community for years to come, without costing you a penny more.

Our citizens’ values and ideals must be on the forefront when we make all decisions. I highly encourage you to reach out to me at President@stpgov.org or your Parish Council at Councilmembers@ stpgov.org to get involved.

Serving as your Parish President continues to be one of my greatest honors.

First and foremost, I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Safe New Year!

Last year was a productive one for the St. Tammany Parish Sheri ’s O ce as we completed my multi-year plan to become more community policing oriented by establishing more accessible district stations in each of our four patrol districts. If you have not visited the station in your district, I encourage you to do so and to meet the amazing men and women who patrol our streets..

As we say goodbye to the holiday season, here in Louisiana we are switching gears to the Carnival season.

I am pleased that St. Tammany krewes continue to provide family-friendly options for our residents to enjoy Mardi Gras parades and festivities.

Don’t forget to look for the STARC oat at the end of several of our local parades. I am proud once again to partner with this worthwhile organization to help collect beads for their clients to sort, repackage and sell.

is program not only prevents these beads from ending up in our land lls or attics, but it provides work and funds for the citizens served by STARC. It’s truly a win-win for our community.

Ensuring a safe and fun Carnival season takes a great deal of planning and cooperation.

Our deputies work together with the municipal law enforcement departments, state police and other surrounding law enforcement agencies to maintain order and provide crowd and tra c control along parade routes throughout our parish.

Our Reserve Division is an integral part of this cooperative e ort, and I cannot thank them enough for the countless hours they work during our many Northshore parades and festivals. We truly could not do Mardi Gras without them.

I wish you all a safe Mardi Gras season and encourage each of you to make good choices and to watch for our deputies along the parade routes so you can join me in thanking them for the job they are doing to maintain a safe environment for our families.

“Laissez les bons temps rouler!”

Artistic

The Collections & Creations of Jacquie Inda Hood Alchemy

Artists truly fascinate me. I think all creative people are born with a certain spark, but the lucky ones somehow figure out how to channel that energy into exactly the right medium or aesthetic. When they make that connection, it’s like touching their spark to a fuse, and whoosh! The resulting fire allows them to transform experiences and perspectives into tangible creations they can share with the world. It’s second nature to them, but it’s magical alchemy to us mere mortals.

But plenty of people live their lives feeling like artists in search of a medium, so how do the fortunate ones figure it out? From what I’ve seen, things are often set in motion by an inspirational person or event, meaningful exposure to some impactful art, or there may have even been some challenging obstacles or emotional circumstances they’ve had to overcome. Sometimes it takes a bit of amateur detective or psychologist work on my part to figure it out, but in Jacquie Inda Hood’s case, it was all laid out for me in full color.

So, who is Jacquie? In the simplest terms, she’s a successful hat designer and collage artist who uses an eclectic array of materials and objects in her work. But, naturally, there’s way more to her than that. And as always, I like to start with a bit of an origin story to lay the groundwork for the bigger picture.

Though she’s lived in Southeast Louisiana all of her adult life, Jacquie started out as a Texas farm girl.

“I had a fabulous childhood. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents on their 3,000-acre farm, where they raised cattle, cotton and corn. I was always fishing, camping and going to summer camps. But I especially loved digging through the dumpyards looking for treasures like bottles, paper and magazines.”

Jacquie inherited her love of this brand of treasure hunting from her father and grandmother. Her grandmother maintained a booth at an antiques mall, her father was in the candy and tobacco business, and they both were avid collectors who liked to arrange their findings in glass bottles for display for their businesses and for pleasure. Additionally, Jacquie’s great grandmother was a clothing designer, and she inherited a love for vintage dresses and fabric (as well as a collection of both) from her and her great aunt, who ran a dry cleaning store.

Jacquie’s family moved to Lake Charles her senior year in high school and she wound up graduating from McNeese State University with a liberal arts degree. She entered and won multiple beauty pageants, including Miss McNeese 1983, and she competed in the Miss Louisiana and Miss Louisiana USA pageants, with singing and dancing as her talents. At one point, she considered becoming an art teacher, but after working for a local TV station for a while, her career plans were put on hold when she married a local physician at the age of 23. They moved to Hammond and Jacquie soon directed all of her energy into the business of being a doctor’s wife, which included raising a family and getting involved with various charities and philanthropic endeavors. When her children, Lacey and Bo, reached their teens and her marriage ended in divorce, however, her life took an unexpected new trajectory.

“Divorce was scary, but I’m brave. It’s like I jumped off a cliff and went for it, and it became a period of self discovery for me. I always knew there was more to me.” Instagram account, @jacquieindahood and jacquieindahood@me.com.

Jacquie met her current husband, Tom, at an art show and not only found the love of her life (and started using his nickname for her, Inda), but also gained a beloved new mentor. Covington artist, gallery owner and former Southeastern Louisiana University art professor Gail Hood became her mother-in-law.

“I love to collect pieces of vintage paper and cards, like my grandmother, and I originally decorated martini glasses with them. Gail encouraged me to create collages on canvas, and she offered me her collection of magazines from the 60s, as well as her amazing old art studio space in downtown Covington.”

Jacquie repeatedly credited Gail with helping her find both satisfaction and success as a self-taught mixed media artist, but her path of selfdiscovery hadn’t exactly reached its conclusion. It suddenly split off in another new direction.

“The hat business took me by surprise. I started out just doing it for fun for Galatoire’s Friday lunches, then I was making crazy Mardi Gras hats and headbands for an event planner friend. I posted them on Instagram, and immediately received orders for Endymion.”

I didn’t have to inquire about the origins of this interest in headwear, because earlier in the conversation, while discussing her childhood memories, she had told me, “My grandpa always wore hats. My dad wore cowboy hats and hunting caps. Everyone in Texas wears hats!”

After moving to St. Tammany Parish in 2020, she was asked to host various workshops and small groups in Old Mandeville, and a pop-up event at Cameo, a local boutique, turned into a permanent spot called Hoodwear Hat Bar. All of this allowed her to grow her customer base, which now even includes Shania Twain and Tom Drummond from the band Better Than Ezra.

Today, Jacquie works out of her studio by appointment, and her customers can choose from a broad selection of hats, from fedoras to cattlemans to trucker hats and everything in between, all of which she acquires from sustainable sources. Some are for everyday use and some are for special occasions, like the Kentucky Derby and Mardi Gras. But the magic happens when they’re personalized with her assortment of adornments and accessories, like vintage fabric, playing cards, matchsticks and feathers.

Some customers choose to be actively involved in the design process, while others leave it up to Jacquie. They may provide images of the gowns or outfits they’ll be worn with, or they may provide a theme, ranging from elegant to outlandish. Some of the more outlandish?

“I’ve had someone ask for a Victorian lampshade, and another gave me a Black Swan Barbie theme. And go! They trusted the rest of it to my vision. Every hat is one of a kind. I wouldn’t do this if I had to mass produce them.”

Serving as an inspiration to late bloomers everywhere, it’s worth noting that the 63-yearold’s mix media art career is only 10 years old, and the gangbuster hat business clocks in at only four.

While she loves the hat business and working with her clients, these days, she’s rebranded it as Parlour and transitioned to working by appointment only. This will allow her to focus on other projects, mainly her first love: collages.

“I paint with paper and I have a vintage chest of drawers full and waiting for me.” But she has even more plans for 2025. “I’d love to do a podcast and I want to do two books: one about my outstanding Southern artist motherin-law and a coffee table book about my hats.”

While fashion and collage art initially might have seemed like completely different animals, after learning more about Jacquie and her background, they both clearly stem from her most valuable collection of all. Over the span of her lifetime, she has managed to methodically sort through and assemble the best experiences from her Texas childhood and the most inspirational artistic influences from family members of both blood and marriage. And when the time was right, she applied her own inherent visionary spark, creating a tinderbox of creativity.

COMMUNITY LEADERS

Mid-winter in Covington is a time when our busy cultural arts and events schedule slows down. We are pleased that Lynn Trefzger (voted Funniest Female Performer by Campus Activities Magazine) returns to the Fuhrmann Auditorium on February 13th with her trunk full of zany characters and her hilarious ventriloquist’s show for us older folks. Zumba with the Mayor is on the 16th followed by Line Dancing with the Mayor (5:45 p.m., Boston Street parade review stand) prior to the Krewe of Olympia rolling on the 22nd .

On March 3rd, the Krewe of Bogue Falaya’s Lundi Gras second line meanders from the Bogue Falaya Park boat launch to the Southern Hotel. Mardi Gras Day morning, the Lions Club Parade rolls followed by the Krewe of Bogue Falaya. Line Dancing with the Mayor is at 9:45 a.m. at the Boston Street review stand. The Parade After Party rocks at the Trailhead with local favorite Soul Revival.

March 5th is Mayor Mark’s Blood Drive. On March 9th the streets of Covington go to the dogs with Mardi Paws. Our annual 4 Unplugged St. Patrick’s celebration on March 13th is followed by our annual Covington Celtic Club walking parade on March 15th. We support and celebrate Youth Service Bureau on March 16th with Chef Soirée at Bogue Falaya Park and kick-off our Sunset at the Landing concert series at the Columbia Street Landing on the 21st. Rockin’ Dopsie keeps us rocking on the 27th at Rev. Peter Atkins Park, the Covington Business Association hosts the Final Friday Block Party on the 28th and the British Car Club of New Orleans presents one of the South’s nicest British car shows at and around the Trailhead on the 29th.

Thank goodness things slowed down …

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you had a great holiday season with your family. I know we will accomplish great things in 2025. Here in Louisiana, as soon as the holiday season concludes, we move right into Carnival Season! Please mark your calendars with these important dates:

Friday, February 21-Krewe of Eve Parade-streets close at 6pm and parade begins at 7pm.

Saturday, March 15-Krewe do Pooch Parade and Costume Contest. The parade begins at 12 noon on the Mandeville Lakefront. This year’s theme is “Woofs of Art”.

Lastly, our first Mandeville Live concert for the Spring 2025 season will be on Friday, March 21 at 6:30pm at the Mandeville Trailhead!!!

Habaneros has opened in the old Cucina Congemi; Cilantros has opened in the old Dave & Jerry’s; and Newk’s Eatery recently opened in the old Felix’s! We are so excited about all of these new businesses locating here in Mandeville. I get asked almost daily about the new Bowling Alley in the old Tiffany Lanes. I am in text contact with the owner and as soon as I have an opening date from him, I promise I will post it (I am hoping for February).

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me personally on cell 985-630-8578 or email cmadden@cityofmandeville.com.

It is a pleasure to serve as your Mayor. It is also a great pleasure to serve with our amazing City of Mandeville employees here at City Hall, with our Police Department, and with our Public Works Department. I look forward to working with all of them for another great year for Mandeville in 2025!!! I hope you have a healthy and happy one!

COMMUNITY LEADERS

Dear Citizens of Slidell,

Exciting changes are ahead! I’m stepping down as your Mayor, effective January 20, 2025, as I have accepted an offer from Governor Landry and the State of Louisiana to serve as a Legislative Affairs Officer with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

Serving as your Mayor has been the most rewarding experience of my career. Together, we’ve achieved significant milestones that have enhanced our community’s quality of life. Notably, we’ve completed the renovation of the Henry J. Calamari Tennis Courts on Second Street and built new outdoor pickleball courts and a state-of-the-art skatepark at John Slidell Park.

These accomplishments reflect the dedication and hard work of our city’s employees and the support of our residents. I am confident that Slidell’s future remains bright, and I look forward to continuing to serve our community by advocating for the needs of our region and the state in my new position with the DOTD.

As per the city’s charter, Councilman-at-Large Bill Borchert will serve as interim mayor beginning January 21, 2025. I know Bill will continue the progress we’ve made and help guide our city toward an even brighter future.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Mayor. It has been a honor and privilege, and I look forward to continuing to serve our state and our community in my new capacity.

February and March mark the start of visitor season here in Tangipahoa, and we’re rolling out the red carpet!

From “snow birds” seeking a warmer climate to ride out the winter months, to the return of high school soccer championships, Tangipahoa becomes a second home for our visitors in February. This year, we’re welcoming the Louisiana High School Athletics Association Boys and Girls State Soccer Tournament and championship series the week of February 18. Over the course of five days, we will welcome dozens of teams from across our state to play under the lights of Strawberry Stadium to fulfill their championship dreams. It’s a magical experience— one you’ll surely want to attend!

Before we close out the soccer championships, we’ll also welcome Tangipahoa’s oldest Carnival club, the Krewe of Omega, who will parade through the streets of downtown Hammond on Friday night, Feb. 21. Omega’s history dates back to a group of college students at Southeastern Louisiana University who put together a Mardi Gras parade back in the 1980s. Today, that tradition continues, and Omega’s trek through Hammond includes a voyage through the SLU campus before turning downtown and delighting revelers across the city!

The following week, Ponchatoula’s annual Antique Trade Days kicks off and runs from Feb. 28 through March 2. Held twice a year, Antique Trade Days is a phenomenal event that draws a host of vendors to the Strawberry Capital for lots and lots of shopping! The arts and crafts fair is a must see! Most of the activity is centered around the railroad tracks, but merchants across the city will have specials that weekend.

Speaking of March, that’s when Tangipahoa’s spring festival season kicks off, and we’re looking forward to the Independence Sicilian Heritage Festival (March 7-9), the Amite Oyster Festival (March 14-16), Hammond’s Smokin’ BBQ Challenge, and lots of festival-related events all month long! For a complete list of our February and March events, go to the Tangi Tourism calendar of events at https://www.tangitourism.com/Events/Community-Calendar.

In Tangipahoa, hospitality is our speciality, and we’re looking forward to welcoming all of you for these and so many other events coming up in February and March.

Northshore Media Group celebrated their 2024 Forty Under 40 honorees with a reception held at The Southern Hotel.

The Forty Under 40 honorees were selected from over 250 nominations, showcasing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional success in their careers or show great potential for future achievements.

The winners had the opportunity to meet and network before being presented with their awards. The event was proudly sponsored by Gulf Coast Bank and Trust and St. Tammany Corporation.

After the awards ceremony, Brian Shirey, Vice President and General Manager of Northshore Media Group, presented checks to the young professionals organizations from the Tangipahoa Chamber and the St. Tammany Chamber.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024! The future of the Northshore is indeed bright. A special thanks to The Southern Hotel, Creative Cakes Bistro and Bakery, Joel Treadwell, Phillip Colwart, and the staff of Northshore Media Group.

A Symbol of the Northshore’s Entrepreneurial Movement

From left to right:

Rory Gallardo, Co-Founder

The Northshore is undergoing a dynamic transformation, fueled by a surge of entrepreneurial energy that is redefining the region’s economic and cultural identity. From local startups to community-driven initiatives, the area is brimming with opportunity and reinvention. The Northshore offers more than an exceptional quality of life — it is becoming a vibrant center for business creativity, collaboration and innovation. Adding a new dimension to this movement is Palette, a collaborative business incubator set to open in Covington this spring.

Located at the redeveloped office complex at 201 Holiday Blvd., Palette reflects how local economic development leaders are listening to the needs of business owners and positioning the Northshore as a hub for the next generation of entrepreneurs. Palette offers a monthly membership model whereby members get everything their businesses need to succeed under one roof, all for about the cost of a monthly cell phone bill. Palette’s vibrant and engaging physical space, designed by Greenleaf Architects, will feature multiple co-working spaces and private offices, event space, conference rooms, a podcast studio and an outdoor workspace. Members gain 24/7 access to the space, proactive concierge services, and a robust lineup of educational and networking programs designed to foster community and inspire growth.

“There’s never been anything else quite like this on the Northshore,” said Palette co-founder Catherine Hover. “Palette combines workspace, community, education, and unparalleled access to resources — everything you need to take your business to the next level.”

More than a coworking space, Palette is the embodiment of the Northshore’s commitment to evolve with entrepreneurs as remote work trends change. Palette provides a flexible, dynamic environment where business owners can interact directly with like-minded professionals without the burden of a high-cost office lease, or the distractions of working from home or busy coffee shops.

Palette is spearheaded by former President and CEO of Stirling Properties Marty Mayer, commercial real estate advisor Bradley Cook, local entrepreneur Rory Gallardo, and Louisiana native Catherine Hover, who previously built two successful Palette locations in Saratoga Springs and Schenectady, New York. After successfully launching and scaling those communities, Hover set her eyes on impacting her home state with an expanded and enhanced concept for the Northshore.

At the forefront of Palette’s mission is Amanda Delaup, Chief Experience Officer and an advocate for small business success. A longtime Northshore resident, Delaup’s own entrepreneurial expertise includes successfully launching and scaling the business consulting firm Cup of Grace Co., and the CertaPro Painters franchise on the Northshore, where she drove significant revenue growth and established a strong market presence. As Chief Experience Officer of Palette, Amanda is responsible for delivering innovative programs, building meaningful connections, and providing resources that help members succeed.

“My goal is to ensure every business feels supported, equipped, and empowered to achieve their vision while building a strong, collaborative community,” said Delaup.

This focus on collaboration is evident in Palette’s programming. Regional partnerships with organizations like St. Tammany Corporation, STartUP Northshore, Northshore Community Foundation, Louisiana Economic Development, Greater New Orleans Inc., The Idea Village, Southeastern Louisiana University, Ochsner Health System, and b1 Foundation will offer access to expert-led workshops, roundtables, and guidance on business resources such as state incentives, seed funds, and federal grant navigation. Some partners, including St. Tammany Corporation, will even host regular office hours at Palette, offering tailored support to member businesses and ensuring entrepreneurs receive the resources they need to thrive.’

“Flexible workspaces like Palette are a valued component of a healthy entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Chris Masingill, CEO of St. Tammany Corporation. “By continuing to support entrepreneurship on the Northshore, we’re attracting and retaining the talent that will drive our region’s future investment.”

Evidence of Momentum

St. Tammany Parish has earned a reputation as one of Louisiana’s most promising regions, celebrated for its strong public schools, extensive recreational opportunities, and strategic location near major economic centers. Today, the region is experiencing an undeniable surge in business activity and innovation, signaling its evolution into a thriving economic engine.

“We’re

seeing an incredible movement on the Northshore,” said Bradley Cook, commercial real estate advisor and cofounder of Palette Northshore. “There is so much talent and potential here, and it is all coming together at the perfect time to create something remarkable. People are no longer just living here — they are building here.”

The Northshore’s entrepreneurial momentum is evident in the numbers. From 2019 to 2022, St. Tammany Parish consistently added more businesses than it lost. In Q3 of 2024, the region saw an average of 66 new business incorporation filings per week, reflecting its strong commitment to fostering innovation (The AnalyST Economic Research Publication). With a high school graduation rate of 90.7% (U.S. Census Bureau) and proximity to multiple colleges and universities, these strengths have cultivated a skilled workforce and positioned the Northshore as a model for economic reinvention.

Entrepreneurs Leading the Charge

The Northshore’s entrepreneurial transformation is powered by local individuals who are shaping the region’s future. Take Sarada Bonnett, for example. As the event coordinator for Covington’s Three Rivers Art Festival, Bonnett has spent years bridging the arts and the broader business community. Under her leadership, the award-winning Three Rivers Art Festival has grown to become one of the largest juried art festivals in the Gulf South region, drawing more than 50,000 patrons to Downtown Covington each year. Now, she is part of a growing effort to deepen those connections and create new opportunities for collaboration.

“Becoming a founding member of Palette was a no-brainer for me. As a nonprofit, it’s difficult for us to afford our own office space. Not only does Palette give Three Rivers a fantastic space to operate out of, but it gives me the opportunity to foster meaningful collaborations and connections between our local artists and the business community. The possibilities are endless, and I’m so excited to be a part of it,” Bonnett said.

Dominic Luke, co-founder of Love MORE and CEO of Grit Executive Coaching, is another local entrepreneur who immediately aligned with Palette’s vision to create a hub where local movers and shakers can collaborate — a space where people of like minds can connect and grow.

We decided to join Palette because of community. You can do

great things when

you

are working with likeminded

people, and growth can happen faster. Palette’s mission is to build community, and that’s our mission here at Love MORE. So becoming a Founding Member

just made a lot of sense for us,” said Luke.

A Vision for Growth

As 2025 begins, the Northshore is poised for a vibrant new era of growth and opportunity. Among those driving this momentum are the visionaries already embracing Palette’s mission. Although the doors have yet to open, Northshore business owners and nonprofit leaders are rallying behind the project, recognizing its potential to reshape the local entrepreneurial landscape.

For those eager to play a role in shaping this dynamic ecosystem, Palette offers a ground-floor opportunity to be part of something truly transformative. To learn how you can get involved, visit www.PaletteNorthshore.com.

our turn: by Shawn Breaud and Shane Songy

ABOUT

In every issue, EDGE of the Lake invites a local chef or restaurateur to visit another eatery on the Northshore.

Shawn Breaud and Shane Songy, the driving forces behind Prime Hospitality Group, have brought their passion for hospitality and community to the Northshore with Desi Vega’s Steakhouses in Covington and Mandeville. Diners at either location can expect impeccable service, a welcoming atmosphere and expertly crafted menus that feature USDA Prime steaks. In addition to providing an extraordinary dining experience for casual evenings or special occasions, the restaurants also serve as hubs for gathering, connection and celebration.

My business partner Shane Songy and I recently visited Bon Sake Sushi & Bar on a Thursday around 3:30 or 4pm for their daily happy hour. We’d been there many times before, and despite not being peak time, there were still plenty of people there.

It’s located in downtown Covington, which is cool, and it’s a really inviting space. It feels like someone’s home, like an old New Orleans home, with a hip interior and a chill environment.

We chose to sit in the main dining area, but you can also sit outside on the patio (they’ve put up a temporary enclosure for the cold weather), at the sushi bar or the actual bar area. And that bar area deserves a little attention. It’s really unique with floating shelves on a mirrored wall that changes color. It’s very eye-catching and adds to the contemporary feel and energy.

The menu is a big mix of classic and innovative dishes. They offer plenty of traditional options, of course, but there are also a lot of non-traditional things for people who maybe aren’t huge sushi fans. For example, a friend of mine swears by their wings, which come with a choice of buffalo kimchi, orange, or teriyaki BBQ sauce.

But, we started off sharing the Prime Rib Steamed Buns from the small plates menu. It really grabbed our attention, so we just had to try it, and it didn’t disappoint. The buns were fluffy and not bready, and they acted as a warm jacket around a generous portion of braised meat, which was cooked to perfection. They are served with kimchi aioli, cucumber, ginger pickled onions, and are just delicious.

From the Signature Maki section, I chose Surf & Turf roll. It’s a mix of seared beef and tempura shrimp with cream cheese, jalapeño, green onion, ponzu, and eel and voodoo sauces. It was beautifully plated and the flavors were incredible. It was well seasoned with a nice spice, and it didn’t even need any dipping sauce. Just dynamite. Of all the things I’ve tried here, this was the best.

Even at an off-peak time, it was well-staffed and it’s fascinating to watch them work with such technique and skill. Some sushi places feel like you’re in a club, but this one has good energy while still being relaxed. Reed Ingram, one of the owners who’s a friend of ours, is almost always there overseeing things and making sure his customers are happy. And in addition to his passion for creating amazing dishes, he has a lot of integrity when it comes to the quality of ingredients they use.

We will definitely be back, and I would recommend it for all sorts of occasions, from date nights and family meals to group events and business meetings.

Friends, family, and community leaders gathered at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium to honor the creative brilliance of St. Tammany Parish at the 18th Annual Parish President's Arts Awards, hosted by Northshore Media Group Vice President Charles Dowdy and presented by the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs. This prestigious event celebrates the exceptional talents and contributions of artists, patrons, and cultural leaders in our community. With awards spanning culinary arts, literature, music, performing arts, visual arts, and more, honorees like Gavin Jobe of Meribo (Culinary Artist of the Year), The White Sisters (Musical Artists of the Year), and Phil Galatas (Visual Artist of the Year) shined brightly. Special accolades included the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented posthumously to Ronnie Pogue, and the President’s Award honoring the Lacombe Art Guild.

This year's celebration also spotlighted the future of the arts with the Emerging Artists Award, recognizing the budding talents of Elizabeth Burris, Ayvah Johnson, Eli Strain, Caroline Tebbs, and Malachi White. The Arts Awards, supported by grants from state and national organizations, continue to amplify the cultural richness of St. Tammany Parish, reminding us of the powerful role art plays in shaping our community.
