Flourish Embrace your inner strength. Flourish in life.
Written by Betsy O’Leary | Photos by Riyen Helg
To…that’s precisely what Marisa Truitt, BS, MS, LPC, the owner/director of Flourish Counseling, LLC wants to promote to the patients who seek help with stumbling blocks in life.
In just a year and a half, Flourish Counseling has established itself as a rising cornerstone of well-being, thriving with two locations: the charming 114 SW Railroad Avenue in downtown Hammond and the equally inviting 154 West Pine Street in Ponchatoula. This swift expansion speaks not only to their commitment to care but also to the community’s embrace of their vision for mental health and wellness.
Truitt is keenly aware of the "so, so great" need for mental health practitioners in Tangipahoa Parish. Yet, she remains steadfast in her commitment to quality, carefully vetting every member of Flourish Counseling’s team. From nurse practitioners to counselors and even the medical assistant, each staff member undergoes rigorous background checks and personality assessments to ensure they are well-suited to guide those seeking care. Today, Flourish proudly employs a dedicated team of 10 counselors, two nurse practitioners, a medical assistant, and an operations manager—together forming a robust network of support for the community’s mental health needs.
Flourish Counseling provides the community with a diverse team of counselors, each offering specialized expertise to meet a variety of needs. Currently, their youngest client is just eight years old, though Truitt envisions expanding services to include even younger children that are navigating trauma.
One counselor focuses exclusively on teens, addressing the unique challenges of adolescence, while another specializes in helping couples overcome marital difficulties. One team member is a dedicated practitioner who champions female empowerment, fostering growth and confidence. Together, these specialties create a holistic approach to mental health, ensuring tailored care for every stage of life.
Truitt recognized a critical gap in care when some clients failed to improve after being referred to outside practitioners for psychiatric medications. Determined to uphold Flourish Counseling's high standards, she recruited nurse practitioners to provide these services in-house. This approach ensures continuity of care and offers a more integrated and cost-conscious model. Before prescribing any medication, the client’s mental health needs are thoroughly assessed, followed by a collaborative effort between the counselor and the nurse practitioner to craft a personalized treatment plan tailored to the client’s unique circumstances.
One team member, Nurse Practitioner Christy Hutchinson, is described by Truitt as “the most understanding and knowledgeable person,” a sentiment that underscores their collaborative approach to client care. Together, they explore innovative ways to invest in their clients’ well-being. Christy also specializes in GeneSight testing, a cutting-edge tool that analyzes how an individual’s genetic makeup can influence their medication response. This personalized approach helps guide treatment decisions, ensuring clients receive the most effective and tailored care possible.
Flourish Counseling is committed to accessibility and personalized care, accepting Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Healthcare. Some counselors on the team even take on privately paid clients. Understanding that the therapeutic relationship is deeply personal, Truitt acknowledges that not every counselor will be the perfect fit for every client. To address this, Flourish provides a free 15-minute online initial consultation, allowing potential clients to connect with a counselor who aligns with their needs and offers a comfortable space to navigate their challenges.
Flourish Counseling prides itself on fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere—a true haven for its clients. Fresh coffee, cold drinks, and snacks are always available in the safe, comforting space designed to put patients at ease. Truitt’s vision and determination have been bolstered by her biggest cheerleaders: her mother, sister, and husband. Their unwavering belief in her dream and encouragement during moments of doubt played a pivotal role in Flourish’s successful expansion, making it a place of hope and healing for the community.

Tangipahoa Parish Floods North Carolina with Kindness in the Wake of Hurricane Devastation.
As we all remember, Hurricane Helene landed in Florida and then traveled up the coast to Western North Carolina, a region that historically doesn’t see that type of storm. The area received so much water that streams had become rivers, creating mudslides and leaving behind a path of destruction. Tangipahoa, as a community, understands the devastation a storm can cause and immediately began coordinating relief efforts. Parish President Robby Miller and his staff got busy filling relief trucks to send to the Carolinas.
At the same time, Hammond resident Deek DeBlieux, a committee member for the Board of Directors of the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina, was asked to coordinate relief efforts. His first priority was securing items such as the heavy equipment and generators needed to begin digging out the 1200-acre facility. “I could do that easily from Hammond,” said DeBlieux, “they did not have access to telephones or computers at the time.”
Knowing the North Carolina National Guard was active, DeBlieux contacted Joe Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of the Tangipahoa Government. Thomas is retired from the Louisiana National Guard, so DeBlieux hoped he would have contact numbers for the local National Guard.
Thomas called back with an even better solution. One that was not even on DeBlieux’s radar. Parish President Robby Miller and the other parish leaders offered the option for YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain to be the recipients of the ongoing parish relief efforts.
Thomas and his team spent the next few days gathering supplies and working with DeBlieux to coordinate the delivery of those supplies directly to Asheville, NC. The relief supplies went to the Asheville area and were split between the Asheville YMCA and YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, which are only about 20 miles apart.
“Hurricane Helene was horrific for a community that wasn’t prepared for it at all,” said DeBlieux. “We’re used to hurricanes. We see them coming, and we prepare. They saw it coming but had no clue that it would dump the amount of rain it did.”
“Tangipahoa Parish directly impacted the communities of Asheville and Black Mountain, North Carolina tremendously,” said DeBlieux, “And, it happened without hesitation. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.”
The damages at the facility alone are estimated to exceed $30,000,000. While the rebuilding efforts have been ongoing, the organization needs more help. The easiest way for the community to help is to visit ymcablueridgeassembly.com/donate. There are portals where donations can be made to help save the historic buildings and to help make the campus safe for organizations to utilize the facility again.
As a last thought, DeBlieux pointed out how awesome it is to live in Tangipahoa Parish, where Robby Miller, Joe Thomas, and their teams thought ahead to offer help without being asked. “It gives me chills to belong to a community that reaches out so many states away to help others.”

“Flourish Counseling is honored by your confidence in our care. Our team of experienced therapists is here to support you every step of the way, empowering you to face challenges head-on and emerge stronger. Thank you for trusting us as your partner in mental wellness. Together, we’ll help you flourish!” ~ Marisa Durand
Jenny Richardson Fore is running for Juvenile Judge in the 21st Judicial District Court. She is married to Colt Fore and has two children, Cecile and Cassius. Living in Denham Springs, they are also active participants and supporters of their community and throughout the 21st District.
Fore is a 2010 graduate of Louisiana State University, having obtained a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a minor in political science. While at LSU and as an LSU Tiger Cheerleader, Fore balanced the pressures of being a student-athlete while excelling academically. She then went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Southern University Law Center in 2013.
After law school, Jenny went to work for the Honorable Blair D. Edwards as her law clerk, making her the only candidate having been employed by a Juvenile Court. Fore says, “This is where my passion grew for the children and families of our communities. God put me in this court for a reason, and I wanted to do everything I could to make a difference in juvenile justice and the lives of families.”
For the past 10 years, Fore has continued her work with youth by serving with the Public Defender’s Office in Juvenile Court. She has also been heavily involved in the juvenile drug court program, worked closely with Judge Edwards, District Attorneys’ offices, the Office of Juvenile Justice’s probation officers, school systems, and families, to do everything they could together to ensure at-risk and system-involved juveniles become productive members of society.
At approximately 1,900 cases, Fore has handled the most juvenile delinquency cases out of any of the candidates in this juvenile judge race. Of these, close to 1,500 involved juveniles placed in detention. As such, Fore has established and maintained a relationship with the facility that detains these youth, the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center. This includes her having participated in cost-saving technologies with the Center, such as online court hearings, where from 2021 to present Fore engaged in approximately 575 online court sessions.
When asked about her “Why,” Jenny stated, “I know firsthand the importance of maintaining a court system that protects our citizens and communities. Providing delinquent juveniles with consequences, along with resources and rehabilitation to make them productive members of society, is what is desperately needed. This includes support and guidance for families to be successful. Here, I will lead our juvenile court with the personal care and attention our children and families need, along with an unwavering toughness against those who harm our citizens. I know what it takes to combat the rise of juvenile crime from a legal standpoint, and as your Juvenile Judge, I will bring this knowledge and passion to the courtroom. I will continue to use my experience and understanding of at-risk youth to work toward lowering juvenile crime while listening to those citizens who have been affected. Together, we can make a difference in our communities.”
“I have met many of you along the campaign trail and look forward to meeting the rest of you along the way. I would appreciate your support and vote on March 29, 2025.”

Twin Steeples Creative Arts Center in Ponchatoula Lights Up Tangipahoa with Vibrant Events!
Since the opening in 2021, it’s likely you’ve probably driven by Twin Steeples Creative Arts Center at 220 East Oak Street in Ponchatoula many times and not been entirely sure what it was. The center, housed in a pair of beautifully restored historic churches, offers a gathering space for artists, performers, art enthusiasts, and the community!
Twin Steeples Creative Arts Center is dedicated to celebrating creativity in all of its forms. From visual arts exhibitions to live music, theater productions, and educational workshops, the center’s programming caters to a wide audience. The mission is to foster artistic expression while providing a space where the community can connect and engage.
“We have found that people spend the majority of their time at work or at home,” said Executive Director Leyla Hekmatdoost. “We want the center to be a go-to ‘third space’ for the local community where they can spend time together without needing to spend a lot of money.”
Hekmatdoost has been working hard to ensure that Twin Steeples’ upcoming calendar is packed with opportunities to experience the magic of local and regional talent. In contrast, Visual Arts Coordinator Lydia Perrilloux works equally hard coordinating the artists and shows so everything goes without a hitch. Highlighted events include rotating art exhibits that feature pieces by emerging and established artists, intimate acoustic music sessions, and hands-on workshops such as painting or photography. Each event is designed to inspire creativity and spark conversation!
Once a month at Open Mic Night, Twin Steeples features paid musicians for guests to enjoy. On other nights, you might wander in and find a class or even a free workshop taking place. Local artists supplement their artwork by teaching their craft so others can let their inner artist emerge. Also, every month, visual artists come together and critique one another. This gives the artists structured feedback and promotes growth for the artist. Community members can also join Downtown Yoga of Hammond and limber up at their monthly yoga class. All levels of experience are welcome. If you’re able to pay, they accept donations! .
One of the most anticipated events is the 3rd Annual Fundraiser: Rumble in The Steeples which is taking place on March 23rd. The event features artists who paint live in a playful competition. The guests then bid on the finished work. The money raised helps to bring high-quality programs to Ponchatoula and beyond. It truly is a magical event!
“What sets Twin Steeples apart is its dedication to accessibility and community involvement. Being a working artist can be isolating, so the artists’ biggest benefit is building a community that gives them exposure to patrons who purchase their work. But whether you buy the painting or quilled card, Twin Steeples exposes everyone to culture and education that won’t break the bank.
The center actively collaborates with local schools, offering art classes and performance opportunities for students. Its outreach programs ensure that everyone has access to the arts regardless of background or age. There are also plans in the works to offer summer camps for local students in 2025. Stay updated on their events and programs by visiting their website or following them on social media
Celebrating the arts and creating memories that will last a lifetime can be as easy as participating in your local Arts Center! Both Lydia and Leyla at Twin Steeples encourage the community to join and participate as members and/or sponsors.

Putting Tangipahoa on theMap PARISH
Corporate Travel…Corporate Headquarters Good Times…Good Paying Jobs
Easy to Get Here…Easy to Do Business Here
While tourism and economic development may seem like two separate missions, in Tangipahoa Parish, both go hand-in-hand.
Leading the efforts to put Tangipahoa Parish on the map to bring visitors and attract businesses to our parish are Tangipahoa Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Executive Director Carla Tate and Tangipahoa Parish Economic Development Executive Director Ginger Cangelosi.
For several years, both Carla and Ginger have complied quite a record of success in increasing the number of major events being hosted here as well as the number of businesses and companies moving and expanding here.
“I am excited about what we have achieved and I’m equally excited about future growth and economic development in Tangipahoa Parish,” said Cangelosi. “Our team and community are now seeing the positive results of our past efforts as more and more companies are becoming familiar with the many assets and endless opportunities we have in Tangipahoa Parish.”
Carla Tate is equally encouraged by the continual increase in visitors and hotel room stays in Tangipahoa Parish.
“Our visitor trends continue to increase every year. You can look around and see many of our current events and festivals continue to grow in attendance,” said Tate. “In addition to their growth, there are a number of new events that have chosen our parish, and they are bringing regional, national and international guests to Tangipahoa Parish.”
The success of their efforts is due in large to the day-to-day work and cooperative partnership Ginger and Carla have developed. Their teams are also actively engaged in working to roll out the red carpet for potential new business, expansion possibilities and new events. It’s a job that takes determination, knowledge and patience. It's vitally important work as they are helping businesses and organizations make decisions about investing in Tangipahoa Parish.
Another key factor that drives what Tangipahoa Parish has to offer in the world of tourism and economic development is Parish President Robby Miller. President Miller has always been focused on and committed to helping grow our parish through economic development and tourism.
Ginger Cangelosi is keenly aware the role the Parish President plays in the success of her work.
“Parish President Miller is always at the table when we bring prospects to our area. His willingness to lend this department the resources needed and help people "Get to Yes" is very important. These companies are always impressed when they understand our parish's willingness and commitment to economic development.”
Carla Tate also has high praise for the role Parish President Miller plays for tourism.
When the parish president gives the official welcome at our events, it goes a long way. When you think of fine dining in Hammond America, Jacmel Inn tops most lists. Located at 903 East Morris, it has been a delicious option for diners since it opened in 1977.
Jacmel began as a residence built in 1888. Original owners Paul Murphy and Rick Colucci renovated the kitchen while keeping much of the cozy atmosphere, such as the fireplace that glows warmly on cold evenings.
In 2022, he and his partners, Krizia Robledo, NP, and Rafelo Robledo, MD., took over ownership of Jacmel, and Flores took the helm as the new CEO. His focus is on providing an enjoyable atmosphere and a top-notch dining experience for everyone.
Journey to Louisiana
Flores was born in Miami and raised in his parent’s home country, Honduras. At 17, he returned to the USA, living in Colorado. He then moved to Houston and started working in the restaurant business.
Wanting to be closer to his family, he relocated to Mandeville. It was then that Flores ventured to New Orleans to learn the art of fine dining service. He worked at Superior Seafood as a bartender and in the kitchen, simultaneously completing Commander’s Palace six-month program of fine dining skills. Flores became an expert at plating food and pairing wine and different liquors with meals.
A Family Enterprise
Flores joined the Jacmel team as a server. He then was a bartender before becoming assistant manager and eventually manager. When the opportunity of ownership presented itself, he knew just who to approach. His sister, Krizia Robledo, NP, and her husband, Rafael Robledo, MD, are established business owners in Hammond. The couple have practiced medicine at the Internal Medicine Clinic of Tangipahoa in Hammond for years but were looking for an additional way to invest in the local community. Partnering together fits that goal perfectly.
Changes, Goals, Everyone Plays a Role
Flores was determined to continue to provide customers with the best service with Jacmel’s elegant plates and the expectation of a fine dining experience. Executive Chef Brandon Martinez, who began as a sous chef, now delights guests with unique, one-of-a-kind dishes that can not be found anywhere else. They also collaborate with Chef Kalych Padro, an international, award-winning chef whose experiences include catering at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Chef Padro specializes in banquets and catering, creating exquisite menus tailored to every budget while striving to be “next level” in what is offered.
No Shortcuts
Food quality and freshness sets Jacmel apart, for instance, when fish is served, it’s often only about 10 hours out of the water. All fish are bought whole and sliced in-house to preserve freshness. Jacmel also rotates its menus with the seasons to incorporate fresh ingredients from our local farmer’s market.
Jacmel is Branching Out.
While keeping many favorite dishes on their menu, the team also offers cuisines with Spanish, French, Italian, and other Mediterranean influences.
Catering events at other venues is a big step Jacmel is focusing on this upcoming year. For large and small gatherings, private or corporate, Flores wants people to know that Jacmel will cater to the individual. When catering events, the team brings everything and cleans it up. Taking the burden from the clients. They offer a dedicated banquet menu for large events like weddings, rehearsal dinners, baby and bridal showers.
The
Famous Bar
The talented mixologists at Jacmel won first place in last year’s Hammond Regional Arts Center’s “Art of the Cocktail” for their Brown-Butter Old Fashioned, a drink that takes two days to prepare. They squeeze their own juices and make all syrups in-house. The talent doesn't stop there as this year GM Julia Cervini won Tangi Lifestyles Best Bartender!

When speaking with professional artist Anne McLeod-Anderson, you can tell how the thread of Art wove its warp and weft throughout all phases of her life.
Born and bred a Louisiana girl, Anne has had the opportunity to spend time in New York City absorbing its electric vibe and taking acting lessons staying creatively focused during her time.
And That’s How It All Began
Anne grew up in St. Landry Parish and spent much of her time with relatives in nearby Acadia Parish, where flat farmland prairies sparked visual memories of those landscapes where horizontal lines prevailed. After Anne graduated from the Academy of Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, she enrolled at LSU to start her path past high school. But her course was not a straight one. She headed back to the bayou at USL (now ULL) before her threeyear Big Apple jaunt.
As she learned the principles and elements of art, she is sure to incorporate line, space, balance, and focal point. Anne enjoys using visual components to draw the view and create paintings. Together with the horizontal lines, it creates a sense of peace and unity throughout her paintings.
Post-Katrina Life
Like many New Orleanians, Hurricane Katrina displaced Anne from her home. She began painting professionally in 2006, after returning to Opelousas and reconnecting with the vibrant art community in Lafayette. There, she took watercolor lessons from Mare Martin and learned a new technique for painting. When Ms. Martin suggested that Anne show her art professionally, she connected with artist George Marks.
Marks had created an artists’ co-op where Anne began showing her work. A local interior designer, Jeffery McCullough, began using her work in homes he was decorating. That opened up opportunities in Jackson, Florida, and Atlanta, where mainstream galleries showed Anne’s work. Her art has also appeared in hit television shows such as Tréme and NCIS New Orleans. The exposure led to her representation by the online gallery Where Art Works. Her work hangs in both Oschner and LCMC hospitals after their recent expansions.
When asked what her plans are moving forward, true to her nature, Anne replied, “I’ll just continue painting and see where it takes me.” For those who’d like to reach Anne about her works she can be emailed at Madamecat2001@yahoo.com .
Air Products teams up with Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation to Introduce Students to
Lake Environment.
Lake Maurepas will become a classroom for local students, thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Air Products Lake Maurepas Community Fund to the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation (LAWFF).
The LAWFF will use the $200,000 to fund field trips to the Turtle Cove Galva Canal Complex in Manchac and the Environmental Research Station located in the wetlands on Pass Manchac, a natural pass that connects Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas. The research station is managed by Southeastern Louisiana University researchers who study the ecology of the lake.
Teachers from schools in Tangipahoa, Livingston, and St. John the Baptist Parishes can apply for funded field trips for their students. Field trips are available to students in 3rd -12th grade in Tangipahoa, Livingston, and St. John the Baptist parishes.
“We are investing in our youth to help provide a better understanding of our state’s ecological systems,” said Danna Leblanc, Commercial Executive Director of Air Products’ Louisiana Clean Energy Complex. “Southeastern researchers are doing great work at Turtle Cove, and it’s incredibly important for our youth to learn about the history and the ecosystem of the lakes. It is our hope that these field trips can contribute to a greater interest in science careers and our environment while creating a lifelong love for Louisiana’s natural habitats,” said Leblanc.
Typical field trips begin with a lecture on the wetlands ecosystem, environmental impacts, coastal wetlands loss, and the history of Turtle Cove. Topics include wetlands ecology, bald cypress tree and marsh restoration, and plant and animal adaptations to the wetlands environment.
The group will then board a 40-foot pontoon boat for a ride through the wetlands surrounding the research station, where students will have the opportunity to see the natural flora and wildlife of the Lake Maurepas ecosystem. The students will then do a guided boardwalk tour, including plant identification, dip netting, and water quality sampling activities.
The Air Products Lake Maurepas Community Fund grant will be administered through the LAWFF and will cover transportation costs, lunches/refreshments and activities for students during their field trip to Turtle Cove. Every student who participates will receive a life jacket that they can keep for future adventures on the water.
"As a foundation dedicated to enhancing the public’s appreciation of Louisiana’s rich natural resources, we are thrilled to offer students the opportunity to learn about the unique ecosystems of Lake Maurepas and the Manchac wetlands," said Missy Fox, Executive Director of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation.
"This grant will help foster a deeper connection to our environment, giving students hands-on experiences that will not only inspire their love for science but also cultivate future stewards of our state’s invaluable natural habitats."
To apply for funding, teachers can visit lawff.org/ap-turtle-cove-grant to complete a grant application.
