Since the opening in 2021, it’s likely you’ve probably driven by Twin Steeples Creative Arts Center at 220 East Oak Street in Ponchatoula many times and not been entirely sure what it was. The center, housed in a pair of beautifully restored historic churches, offers a gathering space for artists, performers, art enthusiasts, and the community!

Twin Steeples Creative Arts Center is dedicated to celebrating creativity in all of its forms. From visual arts exhibitions to live music, theater productions, and educational workshops, the center’s programming caters to a wide audience. The mission is to foster artistic expression while providing a space where the community can connect and engage.

“We have found that people spend the majority of their time at work or at home,” said Executive Director Leyla Hekmatdoost. “We want the center to be a go-to ‘third space’ for the local community where they can spend time together without needing to spend a lot of money.”

Hekmatdoost has been working hard to ensure that Twin Steeples’ upcoming calendar is packed with opportunities to experience the magic of local and regional talent. In contrast, Visual Arts Coordinator Lydia Perrilloux works equally hard coordinating the artists and shows so everything goes without a hitch. Highlighted events include rotating art exhibits that feature pieces by emerging and established artists, intimate acoustic music sessions, and hands-on workshops such as painting or photography. Each event is designed to inspire creativity and spark conversation!

Once a month at Open Mic Night, Twin Steeples features paid musicians for guests to enjoy. On other nights, you might wander in and find a class or even a free workshop taking place. Local artists supplement their artwork by teaching their craft so others can let their inner artist emerge. Also, every month, visual artists come together and critique one another. This gives the artists structured feedback and promotes growth for the artist.  Community members can also join Downtown Yoga of Hammond and limber up at their monthly yoga class. All levels of experience are welcome. If you’re able to pay, they accept donations! .

One of the most anticipated events is the 3rd Annual Fundraiser: Rumble in The Steeples which is taking place on March 23rd. The event features artists who paint live in a playful competition. The guests then bid on the finished work. The money raised helps to bring high-quality programs to Ponchatoula and beyond. It truly is a magical event!

“What sets Twin Steeples apart is its dedication to accessibility and community involvement. Being a working artist can be isolating, so the artists’ biggest benefit is building a community that gives them exposure to patrons who purchase their work. But whether you buy the painting or quilled card, Twin Steeples exposes everyone to culture and education that won’t break the bank.

The center actively collaborates with local schools, offering art classes and performance opportunities for students. Its outreach programs ensure that everyone has access to the arts regardless of background or age. There are also plans in the works to offer summer camps for local students in 2025. Stay updated on their events and programs by visiting their website or following them on social media

Celebrating the arts and creating memories that will last a lifetime can be as easy as participating in your local Arts Center! Both Lydia and Leyla at Twin Steeples encourage the community to join and participate as members and/or sponsors.
