If you are a barbeque enthusiast or if you just like to participate in a good time, we invite you out to 17th Annual Hammond BBQ Challenge. Since the inception of the Challenge, our radio stations have been a proud sponsor of this event that gives back to dozens of local charities while also promoting this area. With over 50 Kansas City Barbeque Society Professional Teams that participate vying for more than $15,000 in prizes, this is a sight to behold. For the amateurs who just want to have fun, the Backyard Boogie and Chicken Little contests are a great fit. The professional teams can’t feed the public, but on the west side of the tracks, most local teams participate in “Tip 2 Taste” and Hammond High and Springfield High Pro Start students operate a full service kitchen, preparing everything BBQ for sale to the public. Please come hungry and join us for this year’s Hammond BBQ Challenge….and give back to charities in our community. ~ Brian Shirey MARCH 27 & 28, 2020

CONNECTING WITH ALL
Written by : Matt Middlecamp, Director of Southeastern's Baptist Collegiate Ministry
The Southeastern Louisiana University Baptist Collegiate Ministry was established in 1954 by the Louisiana Baptist Convention (LBC) and continues today through the efforts of the cooperative program of the LBC. The BCM is on the campus of SLU and serves the 15,000+ students.
College is often one of the hardest transitions in one’s life and most pivotal because of the life-altering decisions college students face. It is during college that students are making career, relational, financial and spiritual decisions all the while often being on their own for the very first time. BCM strives to help students navigate these life decisions and to provide support during the decision process.
BCM exists to develop the next generation’s leaders and reach people for Christ. Our purpose can be understood through the four following words:
Reach: Sharing the Gospel as ambassadors of Jesus Christ in the collegiate community.
Connect: Helping students find and connect with their peers, with a local church in the community, and also connect to campus life through being integrated in a large portion of university life.
Strengthen: Helping build students in their faith and teaching them to share their faith with others. Students are also mentored and strengthened through leadership opportunities/development.
Mobilize: Providing opportunities to share Christ locally, in our nation and around the world through a large variety of challenging mission opportunities.
SLU BCM integrates this purpose into the everyday lives of our students. We want to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ on campus, help students grow in their commitment to Christ and provide students the opportunity to lead and serve locally and around the world.
There are many ways for college students to get involved with SLU BCM!
HERE ARE SOME OF THE WAYS TO BE INVOLVED:
FUSE: FUSE is our worship service held on Thursday nights during the Fall and Spring semesters.
LateNite: LateNite is a fun activity held every Thursday at the BCM. Activities include Ultimate Frisbee, Scavenger Hunt, Open Mic, Swing Dance, Board Game Night, Movie Nights, Karaoke, etc.
Free Lunch: Free Lunch is held on Thursdays and is provided by a local church.
Community: Bible study groups are environments for building community and growing in your faith. Groups are student-led, scripture focused discipleship groups.
Missions: We serve our local campus and community through partnering with local churches. We also take BCM specific mission trips during school breaks. Students also have the opportunity to serve nationally and internationally during the summer through our Summer Missions program.
Events and Fellowship: A variety of events and fellowship opportunities take place through the BCM. Some events include Cookouts, Dances, Pool Parties, Bonfires, Beach Retreat, SLU Athletic Games, Freshmen Game Nights, Semi-Formal Christmas Banquet, State and National Conferences, etc.
We would like to connect with all of you. To alumni, we want to say thank you and we want to hear from you. To those who want to get involved in BCM, please contact us for more information. Please follow SLU BCM on Instagram @selubcm and Facebook @SLUBCM, or email us at slubcm@gmail.com.
Matt Middlecamp holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Arkansas and a Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been the BCM Director at Southeastern Louisiana University since 2014 and has worked on college and university campuses in Arkansas and Mississippi prior to serving at SLU. He is married to Jacque and has two sons, Deacon and Kenyan.

VINTAGE MARKET DAYS
Written by: Michele Carlton
In the little town of Amite you will find one of the largest vintage markets in the state of Louisiana. Every March and October Don and I, Michele, the franchise owners of Vintage Market Days® of Southeast Louisiana, host an upscale vintage-inspired indoor open-air market featuring original art, antiques, clothing, jewelry, handmade treasures, home décor, outdoor furnishings, consumable yummies, and a lot more.
Vintage Market Days® started in 2012 by two friends and is still owned by Dianna Brown. Their appreciation for simplicity and love for all things vintage inspired them to create an event that would allow customers and vendors an opportunity to slow down, smile, laugh, and shop in a charming atmosphere in their home community of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Don and I bought our franchise in the summer of 2015 after being a candle vendor, The Good Stuff Candles, at one of the Tulsa events and falling in love with everything VMD™ had to offer. We searched all over the area for a venue and found the perfect location at the Florida Parishes Arena in Amite. The arena and the staff are incredible, and we couldn’t do what we love without them. My favorite part of the event is to watch all the designing and planning come to life with just a building and a dirt floor, and to watch it be created into an awe inspiring event, just for it to return back to a dirt floor a few days later. It is quite a sight to see!
What is our favorite part about Vintage Market Days®? That’s easy. The people! Our vendors have become a big part of our family. Many of

them travel from one VMD™ to another, and while it is not easy being a traveling gypsy, they pull it off with grace and integrity. After all the blood, sweat, and tears of opening up an event to watch the faces of our customers walk through the door and see what all the vendors have set up for them is a true pleasure. The vendors have spent days setting up their spaces like small stores and we are in awe at the different displays they do for each event. The vendors are so amazed at the kindness shown to them by the customers. They say true southern hospitality is still alive in the south.
For us, Vintage Market Days® is so much more than a show. It’s an event and we take time to invite you to our party. Every one of our events is theme based. We pick out a theme and make it come to life for you. From the personalized invitations, to creating a fun atmosphere where you are surrounded by music and food with some of the best people from all over the United States in one place for three days makes for an event you sure won’t forget!
Our sponsor, photographer Tiffany with Mia Jolie Photography, is able to capture the true moments and heart of our event. The compassionistas from Compassion That Compels, our non-profit, who volunteer at our events, are so bright and bubbly their passion is contagious. These women have all undergone or are still undergoing treatment for cancer. Compassion That Compels donates compassion bags to women battling cancer. Their mission is “Supporting women during and beyond a cancer diagnosis, one compassionate act at a time”. If you haven’t ever stopped and talked to these beautiful souls I highly recommend you do.
Don and I invite you to come and be our guest March 13th-15th, 2020 to discover what all the talk is about! We promise you a day of slowing down, sipping on some sweet tea, and relaxing together with friends and family.
Tickets are available online at selouisiana.vintagemarketdays or you can pay at the door all three days of the event! Friday’s tickets are $10 and are good for all three days of the event! Saturday and Sunday tickets are $5 and will get you back in as many times as you want to come see us. Children 12 and under are FREE! Hours are Friday and Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 10-4. We can’t wait to see you at Vintage Market Days® of Southeast Louisiana’s “Blessed” event at the Florida Parishes Arena in March!

Tangi Humane Society – Connecting Families with New Pets Please... Take me HOME.
Written by Nick Gagliano
There’s a special place on River Road in Hammond. It’s a place where volunteers work each day to help abandoned dogs and puppies find a new and happy home. It’s the Tangi Humane Society.
“We are blessed with people who volunteer their time to help abandoned animals get healthy and find a new and happy home,” said Tangi Humane Society’s Randy Stegall.
The Tangi Humane Society began in 2000 in Springfield and moved to Tangipahoa Parish four years later. In 2011, they moved to their current location on River Road in Hammond.
“Each year we are responsible for 350 to 500 adoptions. We are a no-kill shelter, so it is crucial we find homes for the animals in our care.”
Adoptions can take place at the shelter itself during regular business hours. Photos and bios of available pets for adoption can be found on their website, tangihumanesociety.org.
Adoptions also take place on the second Saturday of each month at Ponchatoula Feed and Seed or PetSense in the Town and Country Shopping Center in Hammond on the third Saturday of the month.
The Tangi Humane Society has dogs of all sizes ready for adoption. Each animal is screened for health issues to ensure they are ready for their new home.

“Good homes and a good fit are an important part of the adoption process. We try to match our animals with the right families to make sure they are both happy in the long term.”
Prospective families are encouraged to come in and visit the animals to start the socialization process.
As an all-volunteer organization, the Tangi Humane Society relies on donations and volunteers. The Hammond Vet Center provides many vet services and PetSense provides donations of food and items throughout the year.
“We always welcome monetary donations, but donations of time are just as important. It is imperative for our animals to get re-acquainted with good people.”
Volunteers mainly help walk the animals as part of the regimen to return to a healthy lifestyle and to help the animals with socialization. A vast majority of the animals are abandoned or abused so it is crucial to help them with their socialization skills and trust of humans.
Abandoned animals come to the Tangi Humane Society in a variety of

“We are here to help, and we have a great relationship with our local law enforcement agencies and Tangipahoa Animal Control.”
Just like other non-profits, the Tangi Humane Society could always use more monetary donations and specific donations for the 20 kennels. Dog food, blankets and lots of love are always needed.

FIGHTING FOR THOSE WHO FOUGHT:
By Cabrina Gordon
It’s not simply a place to sleep, but a facility that helps save lives. Quad Vets of Quad Area Community Action Agency, Inc. equips veterans with tools to get back on their feet, according to Executive Director Wallace Sibley. A private nonprofit organization located in Hammond, Quad Vets provides housing, employment, transportation and other services to encourage clients’ rehabilitation and independence, despite their difficult circumstances. Quad Vets is open to any homeless veteran in the United States — not just those who live locally.
“Every man is given the opportunity to get their entire life back,” Sibley says.
Quad Area CAA has a history in southeast Louisiana that spans over 40 years. The operation began with Winnie Sibley, a schoolteacher who took a summer job with a parish program called Weatherization. At this time, weatherization had only four parishes, hence the “quad” name. As Quad Area expanded, she asked her son, Wallace, to assist. In 2006, she opened a two-story house servicing homeless veterans.
34 TANGI LIFESTYLES NEIGHBORS
tangi
Today, Quad Vets has 100 employees. Clients include veterans who served as early as the Korean and Vietnam wars. The charitable agency received the Best Practice in the Nation Award for two consecutive years and boasts a staggering success rate. Of the 10,000 clients annually, 90% graduate gainfully employed and independent.
“They leave paying their own bills, and they have a place to stay,” Sibley says. “We’re very unique in the regard that no one else can say nine out of ten program participants leave self-sufficient.”
To receive assistance from Quad Vets, veterans first connect with a social worker who is a liaison with Veterans Affairs (VA). The social worker conducts testing to determine if the veteran was anything except dishonorably discharged. Next, the veteran registers with a VA clinic or hospital. Once officially enlisted in the program, the veteran can stay at the facility for up to 24 months, a federal VA rule. He or she may choose to leave the program at any time.
A priority in the Quad Vets program is counseling. With the VA clinic, veterans receive mental health support and addiction recovery treatment. Saving money is another priority. Some clients qualify for VASH, a voucher system that funds 70% of living expenses for life. Others attend financial management training and learn how to build a budget. There are agencies that assist clients once they graduate from the program, such as paying for apartment deposits and buying beds. Additionally, veterans receive donated furniture, kitchen supplies, and other items.
“This is a lot safer. The people here are great,” says “David,” a veteran who has been enrolled in the program for several months. “I can go back to work now. All of these people around here have helped me out a lot.”
Employment takes precedence in the journey to self-sufficiency. Graduates of the program work within the organization, while current clients are privy to occupational opportunities at Quad Vets, such as janitorial and maintenance work, which includes building, property and yard work. Clients seek employment off-site as well. In fact, Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller and Chief Administrative Officer Joe Thomas prioritize hiring veterans in the local community and providing occasions for promotions.
“You learn the stories, and you see the people. You watch them get a job, and you watch them be successful. It’s extremely fulfilling for me as an executive director,” Sibley says.
This fulfillment extends past his job description. Sibley invests extra time communicating with the veterans. They accompany him to church every Sunday and to the grocery store, for example. The atmosphere at Quad Vets is reminiscent of family, as Sibley describes. Bearded Villains, a local group, prepare and serve a massive Thanksgiving meal to the veterans. Graduates of the program visit often and remain in contact with Sibley and other staff members. The veterans receive Christmas gifts from generous donors in the community. For the veterans, the bonds that they share with Quad Vets' staff are important on their roads to recovery.
“The staff is outstanding. I have no complaints,” says Thomas, a Quad Vets client who has been with the program for over 3 months. “I’m impressed.”
In the future, Sibley hopes to implement a recreational facility and a used car service for the veterans on-site. As a means to that end, Quad Vets is hosting a raffle with incredible prizes including Yeti coolers, a Heritage handgun and the grand prize of a custom golf cart. The tickets are available online at quadvets.com, at the Strawberry and Tickfaw Boopalus festivals, or at the facility. The drawing will be held at the Tickfaw Boopalus in Springfield on April 18 at 4:00 pm. Winners need not be present to win.

38 TANGI LIFESTYLES
1: Swimming pool with the kids
Brian was a competitive swimmer in high school. He built a pool in his back yard to teach his children to swim and hopes his passion for swimming will live on in them.
2: Mardi Gras
Brian’s family has a long running tradition of celebrating Mardi Gras. He’s a 15-year member and current float lieutenant of Olympia and his family always spends Mardi Gras weekend celebrating on St. Charles Avenue with friends.
3: Southeastern Athletics
Supporting his Alma Mater particularly at sporting events makes the list of favorites. He appreciates the luxury of having quality collegiate athletic events with a family friendly atmosphere in the convenience of his backyard.
4: Cooking & Entertaining
Brian and Kelly have a group of close friends who all have children of similar age. Whether it’s at the Gohres' home or a home of their friends, everyone brings a dish to eat and their beverage of choice. The kids play and the adults enjoy watching them!
5: Vacationing in Michigan
In the summer of 2018 Brian and family visited Michigan for the first time. The beauty of the landscape combined with absence of heat and humidity made such an impression that he has resolved to make summer vacation in Michigan an annual tradition.
