SPRING HAS SPRUNG and optimism is filling the Tangipahoa Parish air (along with the smell of boiled crawfish). Our streets are busy with traffic; our businesses are reporting excellent sales and life is returning to our community as more folks receive Covid vaccines. We are and have always been a fun-loving parish and as we go head-long into the spring and summer, we hope that everyone will keep in mind that we’re not totally out of the pandemic woods yet. We hope our Parish will celebrate this spring and summer with a measured level of responsibly so we can continue to loosen up and build on the excellent progress we’ve made.

This is traditionally fair and festival season. Even though we’re not quite “back to normal” yet, we can still maintain the spirit of the season by supporting one of the many local non-profits who are the true beneficiaries of our great events. Everything from Boy & Girl Scout Packs and Troops; Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs; School Sports Teams; Organizations serving those with special needs; all of these groups depend on the funds raised when they man the booths at our fairs and festivals. With the exception of the Sicilian Festival (June 4th-6th) and the inaugural Pirate’s Weekend (April 10th11th &17th-18th) all other major spring events are either considering a date later in the year or have been postponed another year. To all of the organizers of our spring events, you should know we appreciate your hard work and we can’t wait to get back into the swing of things.

Finally, the input we get from readers shapes our content. Please share your thoughts for stories at info@tangilifestyles. com and send your pictures for our SEEN & HEARD and your events for our calendar to events@tangilifestyles. com. Also, be sure to tune in to or download the apps for TANGI 96.5 and KAJUN 107.1 for your local daily news, weather and sports. We hope you’ll enjoy all we have to offer!

EIGHT REASONS TO EXERCISE

From North Cypress Fitness Center and webmd.com

1. EXERCISE BOOSTS BRAINPOWER

Not only does exercise improve your body, but it also helps your mental function. Exercise increases energy levels and increases serotonin in the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity.

2. MOVEMENT MELTS AWAY STRESS

As much as it may stress you out just to think about exercising, once you actually start working out, you will experience less stress in every part of your life.

3. EXERCISE GIVES YOU ENERGY

You might be surprised that by working out 30 minutes a day, it can change your whole day. When endorphins are released into your bloodstream during exercise, you feel much more energized the rest of the day.

4. IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO FIND TIME FOR FITNESS

The key is to use your time more wisely. Take your children to join you in physical activity while enjoying family time.

5. FITNESS CAN HELP BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

Think of what exercising with a partner can do for a relationship, whether it is with a spouse, a sibling, or a friend you used to go to lunch with once a week.

6. EXERCISE HELPS WARD OFF DISEASE

Research has shown that exercise can slow or help prevent heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis (bone loss), and loss of muscle mass.

7. FITNESS PUMPS UP THE HEART

Not only does exercise help fight disease, but it also creates a stronger heart -- the most important muscle in the body. That helps make exercise and the activities of daily life feel easier.

8. EXERCISE LETS YOU EAT MORE

Pound for pound, muscle burns more calories at rest than body fat. So, the more muscle you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate. And, of course, you also burn calories while you are actually exercising.

Take a trip with us. After the past year’s pandemic journey, we come to a fork in the road. If you take the left fork, you will get stuck in the same “2020 woe-is-me” rut. If you take the right fork, you will be traveling on the “now is the time to move forward” super highway. In fact, one of the first core principles you'll discover is that at North Cypress Fitness they are "ALWAYS moving forward NEVER standing still!"

For everyone taking the right fork route, you will soon find the North Cypress Fitness Center team leading the way and encouraging everyone to move forward and return to a healthy lifestyle.

“We all know the past year has been uncomfortable and depressing for many families in our community, said Dion Grossnickle. “But now is the time to shake off 2020 the best we can and get back to a healthy physical and mental lifestyle. All of the science agrees that exercising is one of the best ways to ward off diseases while improving physical and mental wellness.”

North Cypress Fitness Center has weathered the storm, and today the North Cypress team has upgraded and created several procedures that makes North Cypress unparalleled when it comes to cleanliness and safety.

Owners Richard Henry and Dion Grossnickle are proud and certainly recognize their team for creating a number of best practices everyone can enjoy when they return to North Cypress Fitness Center.

“We have always had a great team at North Cypress that has always put our customers first. These past twelve months, our team has championed the cause, and they work every day to make exercising at North Cypress Fitness Center the best possible experience it can be. This is true for all of our re turning customers and our many new customers.”

Since the first of the year, Grossnickle said he is seeing more and more of his past customers returning while seeing an uptick in new customers. Their specialized exercise classes are almost at capacity, and the gym is constantly in use throughout the day.

North Cypress Fitness Center has always catered to all members of the community. With the summer months quickly approaching, North Cypress Fitness Center will be ready to have their many summer activities families enjoy once again. The pool, the family workout opportunities, and the outdoor area will be open and operational.

“People have been isolated for so long, I believe they feel this is the time to start venturing out to return to exercising and getting back to the basics.

We are thrilled to see them, and it’s just like seeing an old college buddy or family member. You are always welcome at North Cypress.”

61 SUNS

While the rest of the new music scene seems to be permeating with solo artists and laptop audio engineers, these local musicians have stuck to the tried and true band format: two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer.

Local genre-bending rock group 61 Suns has been a long time in the making. Since its two founding members met, Brad Lamonte, of Tickfaw, and Tyler Durbin, of Amite, have had a common thread: the guitar. They first crossed paths as underclassmen at Hammond High Magnet School, in Ms. Marcia Arceneaux's guitar class.

Lamonte says, "There's no other way to say it, we were the best ones in the class. There were a lot of people in that class when we first started that didn't know how to play guitar at all, and they wanted to learn." Since Lamonte and Durbin had previous experience and had the ability to play a few chords, they were placed in the advanced ranking.

tangi Entertainment
Brad Lamonte

Their acquaintance with the instrument had come long before then, however. Both Lamonte and Durbin grew up with musician fathers. It was from them that they learned the basics, then they self-taught to fill in the cracks.

Following their classroom jam sessions, the two filled positions within Lamonte's father's band. They gigged the local scene until the end of their teenage years, and then sought to make a name for themselves. In 2018, they began performing as a duo under the simple moniker Brad and Tyler.

The remaining two members joined 61 Suns through family and friend connections. Bassist Dawson Davis of Hammond was introduced through a mutual musician friend. Drummer Paul Liuzza Jr. of Independence was a friend of Lamonte's family.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the group's popularity has continued to grow in 2020. They performed a Facebook-live concert from Durbin's living room which has since reached 1,400 views -- other videos on their page have acquired as many as 11,900 views.

As 61 Suns transitions from covers into original works, Durbin and Lamonte both say they want to write the kind of music they would want to listen to. "Led Zeppelin's not making music anymore," Durbin says, so they'll have to fill that void somehow.

Brad Lamonte describes the relationship with his bandmates as more than just business. “It's friendship, and it's brotherhood," he said.

Looking to the future, they hope to continue playing in local venues like LaCarreta, Boopalu's and Salty Joe's, and they also hope to expand to larger venues such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Blessed Through Giving

“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. ~ Deuteronomy 15:7-8

There is no greater gift in life than to give to those in need. Once a month, 25+ members of Eagle Heights Community Church meet at Our Daily Bread in Hammond to assemble commodity boxes for the community of Tangipahoa Parish. Our Daily Bread is a local food bank that has been serving the community since 1999.

Although Eagle Heights Community Church is just one of the serve teams associated with Our Daily Bread, we are able to fill enough boxes to feed 800-1000 families each month. Without fail, every month boxes are filled with essential staples for those in need. Every volunteer on the Serve Team works a full-time job yet still carves out time to serve the community. Neither Hot or Cold nights nor Covid-19 can keep the wonderful members of each serve team from serving the local body every month.

I was asked about two years ago to start serving on the Commodity Box Serve Team. I had no idea what to expect but

knew I needed to step up and join the team. Serving on the Commodity Box Team has been a wonderful experience for me that has blessed me in so many ways. About 4 months ago, I started bringing my 9-year-old son with me so that he could experience the benefits of setting his desires aside to serve others. I have been able to see a transformation in his attitude from “oh, we got to go fill boxes” to “Dad, we get to go help others in need”. My son is tasked with opening cases of food and breaking down boxes, so they can be recycled. It is not rocket science and at times I am sure he feels it is a bit repetitive, but his desire to want to serve others is truly heartwarming. We get to spend quality time together while making a difference to others. I know that the experience of serving others is one that will stay with him forever.

I know that so many residents in Tangipahoa Parish are blessed by what Our Daily Bread is doing. I consider myself among those blessed by Our Daily Bread.

Matthew "Matt" Bourque is a native of Gonzales, Louisiana. He and his wife Lynn moved to Hammond in 2008. They have four children Ella Claire, Jake, Finn and Hayes and have attended Eagle Heights Community Church since 2008. Matt has a Master’s Degree from The University of Louisiana at Monroe in Gerontology, and he and his wife both work in the healthcare field.

... but through love, serve one another. Galatians 5:13

Our Daily Bread thanks local volunteers for its success s

Grateful and humble. Those two words encapsulate the sentiment at Our Daily Bread. Our Daily Bread, is a local food bank which has served Tangipahoa Parish since 1999 and since its inception its mission has been to alleviate hunger and make an eternal impact by sharing kindness and compassion with everyone in need. This past year, more than ever before, Our Daily Bread is grateful to be in a position to serve those in need and humbled by the level of community support.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Heather Poole, the food bank’s development manager, reported Our Daily Bread has tripled the number of clients it serves. With the increase in number of meals served, food boxes to be put together, and donations to be processed, Our Daily Bread needed more volunteers and they needed them quickly. Heartfelt calls to members of the community were answered with an abundance of new volunteers offering their time and talents during this critical time.

'When the pandemic first hit, a lot of our regular, older volunteers were unable to volunteer due to a concern for their health and the health of their families. We saw a decrease in our regular volunteers but a whole new crowd of volunteers from the community stepped up to help out," says Rick Durham, Chairman of the Board.

"Teachers, families, church members, corporate volunteers, and individuals from all over the community came to help. Without them, none of this would be possible," says Durham.

Wal-Mart Distribution Center has been a long-time, major supporter of Our Daily Bread. They have helped provide necessary equipment like a walk-in cooler and freezer and a refrigerated truck. Most recently, they have been helping us to meet the demand for food assistance by providing us with food donations every week. The employees

18 TANGILIFESTYLES.COM

at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center volunteer their time, going beyond their normal job responsibilities preparing and loading donations twice a week almost every week. Entergy is another large corporate sponsor who provides a significant number of volunteer workers and donations..

"Corporate sponsorship is vitally important to our cause. It has helped build a strong foundation which allows our volunteers to come together and feed more of our community," says Durham.

Volunteer workers serve hot meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Meals are currently served as a drive-thru in order to meet COVID-19 safety guidelines. In addition to the hot meals, emergency bags of food are provided for those who do not qualify for monthly food boxes and for those who need additional food assistance beyond their monthly allotments.

Over 2.2 million pounds of food were distributed by Our Daily Bread volunteers and staff in 2020, breaking all previous records

In 2020, Our Daily Bread distributed 132,764 hot meals, 33,431 emergency bags of food, and 25,902 monthly food boxes with the help of over 3,000 volunteers

If you live in Tangipahoa Parish and are in need of assistance, or if you would like to donate or volunteer, visit ourdailybreadhammond.org or call (985)542-4676.

March is Women’s History Month,

so here is a Pop

Quiz

for all our Tangi Lifestyles Readers: What is the leading cause of death for women?

If you answered breast cancer, we are sorry to say you answered incorrectly.

Each year 267,000 women in the United States die from heart attacks which kills six times as many women as breast cancer according to the Women’s Heart Foundation.

Another alarming statistic is heart attacks for women under the age of 50 are twice as likely as men to be fatal.

While these are all important statistics, they are just numbers until a family member becomes part of that group. Then it is more than a number.

Dr. Lorett Swank, her mother Loretta and niece Hannah Moody became painfully aware of the fatality of heart disease for women when their sister, daughter and mother, Jana Moody, passed away from a heart attack on January 25, 2005.

“Jana was 42 years old and appeared to be in excellent shape,” said Lorett. “She exercised regularly, did not smoke or have high blood pressure and there was no family history of heart disease.”

Jana was in private practice in Hammond and seemed to have everything going her way. Hannah was eight years old and Jana loved practicing law. Her family described her as an attorney and friend you wanted on your side. She was passionate, opinionated, and committed to her family, friends, and clients.

Early in January she began not feeling well. She was feeling anxious, short of breath and had a faster than normal heartbeat. Just like many doctors at that time that did not correlate women with heart disease, her doctor told her the symptoms were just a result of her high-stress job.

On January 24, Jana was in her office when her administrative assistant heard her fall. She was unconscious and rushed to the hospital. After arriving at the hospital, Jana rallied and was starting to feel better, but she was sweating profusely. At first the doctors thought her issue was low sugar but suddenly she crashed with another episode. She was rushed to the Cath Lab where they determined she had a blocked artery known as the widow maker. They removed the blockage but as time went on, they feared her brain was deprived of too much oxygen.

The next day their fears were confirmed when the neurologist let the family know Jana had no brain activity. The decision was made to remover her from the vent and die peacefully. Jana’s cardiologist then approached the family to let them know Jana was an organ donor and all her other organs were intact and healthy. As her last act of kindness, Jana’s organs were donated to help others live.

Since that time, Lorett has been an women’s advocate for cardiac care. She continues to monitor her health while exercising regularly, eating healthy foods and seeing a cardiologist regularly.

“Heart disease is a real issue for women in our community and now that my children are in college, I have time to get involved to help other women,” said Lorett. “So that’s why I have accepted the position to be on the Leadership Team for the Northshore chapter of the American Heart Association.”

The American Heart Association had a strong presence in Tangipahoa Parish until Hurricane Katrina. That is when the

in St. Tammany Parish.

As part of the Leadership Team and as a tribute to Jana, Lorett has formed a team for the Heart Association’s Annual Heart Walk. The Heart Walk will be Saturday, May 8 at the Fontainebleau State Park in Covington and she is inviting her friends and local community members who want to help fight heart disease to participate by either forming a team or donating to her team as they walk to keep hearts beating.

Lorett serves as the Chief Student Success Officer and Director of Student Excellence at Southeastern Louisiana University.

“I have been overwhelmed by the number of friends and associates who have contributed to the Heart Walk in Jana’s honor,” said Lorett. “I am especially proud to be part of the Northshore Heart Association and carry on the local work that Dr. Ann Carruth started years ago for our community.”

Lorett also encourages everyone to be a difference maker and not a statistic. If you would like to be a part of the Northshore’s American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, please visit www.heart.org

Best Small Bank in Louisiana and the U.S.

26 TANGILIFESTYLES.COM

What does it take to be the Best Small Bank in Louisiana and the U.S.? It’s something that First Guaranty Bank knows well as they were just awarded this honor by Newsweek Magazine.

To identify America’s Best Banks, Lending Tree in consultation with Newsweek, ranked candidates from among more than 2,500 FDIC insured financial institutions. The banks were assessed on 55 factors, including various fees, current and historical interest rates, account terms, customer service features, and mobile app scores. First Guaranty Bank won, not only the honor of Best Small Bank in Louisiana, but, also in the entire U.S.

“This is a tremendous recognition that we didn’t even know we were in the running for,” says Alton Lewis, First Guaranty Bank’s President and CEO, “but we embrace it and will continue to live up to the honor every single day.” Lewis continues, “This isn’t the result of one person, one department, or one region. It’s the efforts of everyone in the bank; everyone excelling at their job.”

Randy Vicknair, Senior Vice President/Chief Lending Officer, states, “We were just doing our jobs as local community bankers. We had no idea this type of analysis was being completed until we started getting congratulatory calls from all over the country regarding our status as ‘Best Bank’.”

The team at First Guaranty Bank acknowledge what they think it takes to be the Best Small Bank. And they say, first and foremost, it’s understanding and listening to their customers. It helps them identify ways in which they can improve and tailor their products and services to fit the needs of their customers. To better understand the voice of the customer, they implemented surveys. Customers get to voice their praise or concerns and give honest feedback and as Vicknair states, “We’re listening. We have a team dedicated to reviewing the survey responses and acting on them.” Vicknair continues, “Partnering with our customers is also important. It helps us understand their needs and how we can better help them; whether it’s buying a home, starting or expanding their business or saving for the future. I’ve told several customers and team members that my title as CLO is often interpreted as Chief Lending Officer, but it also means Chief “Listening” Officer. I encourage everyone to share their experiences and feedback with us!”

To further illustrate how they’re listening, First Guaranty Bank has recently invested in a new online banking system and mobile app. This new system provides many updated features and benefits to their customers. “Change isn’t always easy, especially a big change like this, but it was

necessary because our customers let us know they wanted something more robust and we like to think we delivered on that,” said Desiree Simmons, Senior Vice President/Marketing, Training and Loan Administration.

Speaking about other things that make them the Best, Lewis states, “Supporting charities, the local government and schools are a big part of what we do, and this past year was no exception.”

“It’s not just one thing that makes us the Best Small Bank,” states Simmons. “Among many things like mentioned above, it takes a dedicated team that really understands our mission and a fully involved Board of Directors to help guide us. And we have that at First Guaranty Bank.”

Not only does First Guaranty Bank understand the importance of their customers; they place a high value on their employees, too. “Our employees are a big deal to us. They are the ones who foster the relationships with our

customers. They are essential to us now and always,” boasts Lewis. Growing their work family means welcoming new employees before they even start. “We know how important it is to make a good impression, so we start early in the process. All new hires get a subscription box to FGB. This box contains FGB merchandise, which includes branded T-shirts for casual dress days, lanyard, lapel pin and the ever famous ‘I’m Kind of a Big Deal at FGB’ mug. We want our new employees to be as excited about joining our corporate family as we are about them joining,” continues Lewis.

When asked what sets them apart from the various banks around Louisiana, Lewis simply replied, “It’s our unwavering commitment to go further to help the people, our customers and our communities. To us, it’s all about respect; respecting each other, respecting the customers, respecting everyone.”

On April 24th, Tangipahoa Parish residents will have the chance to vote on a half-cent sales tax proposed by the Tangipahoa Parish School Board.

The half-cent sales tax, if passed, will enable the district to address many long-term, deeply rooted challenges which have plagued the system as it relates to educational funding. Though most won’t notice the half-cent when making a purchase, our students and employees will notice a significant, positive difference. The additional funding will be dedicated to providing additional resources for students and additional pay for employees. All fulltime employees will receive a 7% raise. This includes teachers, custodial workers, cafeteria workers, and bus drivers.

Melissa Stilley, superintendent of the Tangipahoa Parish School System, spoke in depth about the system’s current state of funding and the significance and benefits that a half-cent would provide.

Tangipahoa Parish residents to vote on the HALF CENT SALES TAX to improve parish schools and build community — April 24, 2021

“Out of 69 school districts in the state of Louisiana, Tangipahoa Parish ranks dead last as the least funded district,” stated Stilley. Stilley explained that the half-cent alone would significantly close the sizable gap in funding; however there is even more benefit for schools and our community.

“When communities pass taxes to support schools, the state provides additional funding to the district, meaning our district would receive a minimum of $5 million in state funding,” said Stilley. “That additional funding would provide resources like before and after school care, accelerated learning programs, STEM courses and vocational STEM programs, pre-K for every four-yearold and reduce class sizes.”

Our children’s education is absolutely most important. Giving students the resources to reach their potential is paramount. Those resources include access to quality teachers. Tangipahoa Parish School District cannot currently compete with neighboring parishes’ compensation, and as a result, many quality educators leave for more money. This half-cent will begin to even the playing field in order to recruit and retain the best talent.

When communities pass additional taxes to support schools, the state provides additional funding to the district.

“Despite being the least funded district, Tangipahoa Parish ranks third for funds spent on the classroom – which shows that the missing component in the district is the effectiveness and availability of experienced teachers,” stated Stilley.

Jamie Mills, principal at Loranger Elementary School, elaborated on how the benefits of the tax creates substantial positive changes for community morale, as we’ll keep qualified teachers employed for the long run.

“The half-cent sales tax will be amazingly beneficial for our schools and staff as it allows us to increase our human capital, reaffirm community morale, and to hire, recruit and most importantly retain experienced employees,” said Mills.

If approved, the half-cent sales tax will go into effect in July of this year.

YEARS STRONG! 70

The Greater Hammond Chamber is now officially the TANGIPAHOA CHAMBER!

Board Chairman Lindsey Palmer with Stirling Properties, shares, “I’m proud to serve as the 2021 Chairman for the newly rebranded Tangipahoa Chamber of Commerce, a name that better reflects the work we do and the community we serve.”

Founded in 1950, the Tangipahoa Chamber serves over 600 member businesses throughout Tangipahoa Parish representing over 20,000 employees.

“We know there is strength in numbers and invite all businesses in the parish to join us,” shared Palmer.

Chamber CEO Melissa Bordelon notes, “Our leaders are problem solvers, connectors, and builders who are committed to working with our local, parish, and state elected officials to help our businesses grow.”

The Tangipahoa Chamber partnered with Anntoine Marketing + Design to craft their new logo which tells the story of who the chamber is and how they plan to move forward.

First, to grab your attention is a bold red ribbon with the Tangipahoa Chamber lettering. The element reflects the big welcome the Chamber shares with each new business as the owners’ dream becomes a reality. From day one, the Tangipahoa Chamber introduces member businesses to the community and encourages others to support their efforts personally and through their business connections.

“We know there is strength in numbers ...”
34 TANGILIFESTYLES.COM
“...and invite all businesses in the parish to join us.”

A perfect match is found in the choice for the color red as it is passionate, full of action and energy. The circles behind the welcome ribbon spotlight elements that connect the parish. The teal, curving line represents the Tangipahoa River. Train tracks are important as the communities up and down the parish grew because of this connectivity. The tracks are also important as the Tangipahoa Chamber owns the Historic Hammond Train Depot which serves as the hub for their local business initiatives. The two black lines that frame the circle represent Interstates, I-55 and I-12, whose crossing in Tangipahoa Parish is an asset that continues to make our region desirable. They connect our parish and bring visitors and tourists to celebrate all that is good in our cities and towns.

Finally, an oak leaf is planted between the established date of 1950. The mighty oaks which are plentiful and loved in our area represent honor, wisdom, and stability. It is also a nod to our favorite Hammond oak – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Friendship Oak. The Friendship Oak represents the strength & friendship that Tangipahoa Chamber will project to the entire Tangipahoa business community for years to come.

“If you are doing business in Tangipahoa Parish or want to do business in Tangipahoa Parish, you should become a member of the Tangipahoa Chamber,” said Bordelon.

The MAGIC Wand

There are many conditions in medicine for which a magic wand would be very useful. Unfortunately they are in short supply. There is, however, an ingenious tool that has been shown in head-to-head studies to magically melt fat more efficiently with fewer side effects than any other fat melting method available.

Here’s how it works: through a small needlestick incision, a laser filament the width of angel hair pasta is inserted into the fat layer. Laser energy then melts the fat, closes off the tiny blood vessels in the fat layer, and tightens the skin by generating collagen formation.

All of this is done safely in a matter of minutes under local anesthesia.

A recent large review of the various

methods of fat removal confirmed that laser liposuction is superior to standard liposuction. Moreover, the much touted procedures which seek to eliminate fat by either freezing, low-level laser, ultrasound, or radio frequency can only offer very minimal, incremental fat melting. To put it in practical terms, a lower abdominal “pooch” may typically take multiple fat-freezing procedures, each taking an hour or more, for tangible results. When treating this same area, Smartlipo totally eliminates all excess fat and tightens the overlying skin in 30-60 minutes. The total investment in time and money is much less with this “one and done” approach.

To those of us who’ve been doing liposuction since its introduction into the U.S. in the 1980s, this laser wand is as close to a magic wand as we’ll ever get!

LOCAL BUSINESS M VE

Movement Mortgage has been busy helping locals make moves all over Tangipahoa Parish. Recently, Rick Sedberry took some time to answer a few questions and give us an inside look at what Movement Mortgage is all about.

Whether you’re buying, selling, refinancing, or building your dream home, you have a lot riding on your mortgage lender.

What is your story?

Before starting a career in the mortgage business, I worked in hotel management. I enjoyed it, but it demanded constant travel. After several years, I wanted to settle down and start a family. I then transitioned to the mortgage industry, where I’ve been for 22 years now. The best part is that it’s a job that has allowed me to make a difference in so many people’s lives.

Why Hammond, LA?

I have worked or lived in the Hammond area for more than 20 years. My wife, Jennifer, and I will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary this year. We’ve been blessed with two daughters; both enrolled at St. Scholastica Academy in Covington. Madison is a Junior, and Kaylee is in eighth grade. The family dogs are Sasha, a blue heeler, and PJ, a lab mix. When not working with future homeowners, I tend to fill my off-hours with CrossFit, hunting, and fishing. I also study Isshinryu Karate at Dibenedetto’s Karate in Hammond. I’m also an active participant in the local community, having recently served as Chairman of the Greater Hammond Chamber of Commerce.

38 TANGILIFESTYLES.COM

Why did you choose Movement Mortgage over other lenders?

I chose Movement Mortgage in 2018 because I wanted to work somewhere I could better serve my clients, while also making a difference in the communities we serve and the world in which we live. My assistant, Melissa Black, has worked with me for nearly five years. She keeps me on track and keeps the process moving. My business at Movement has grown quickly, so last year, Jennifer and I decided to form a husband and wife team. With Jennifer’s recent addition as a Movement Mortgage loan officer, we’ll be able to expand our efforts and touch even more lives.

It is Movement Foundation that makes Movement Mortgage special. Movement Mortgage exists to love and value people by leading a Movement of Change in its industry, corporate culture and communities. Funding approximately $30 billion in residential mortgages annually, Movement is the sixth-largest retail mortgage lender in the U.S. The company employs more than 4,000 people, has more than 650 branches in the U.S. and is licensed in 50 states. After funding its balance sheet and investing in future growth, Movement’s profits are paid to its primary shareholder, the nonprofit Movement Foundation. Since 2012, Movement has invested more than $260 million of its profit in Movement Foundation. Those funds are used to build schools and affordable housing and to support community centers and global outreach. For more information, visit movement.com.

A Suitcase Full of Paints

Ryder Mathews went from a New Orleans kid doodling GI JOE to a local artist creating murals and commissioned art. He currently resides in Loranger but art has taken him on a journey of discovery. However, this art journey may have never evolved past the occasional sketch if Ryder’s father had not come across a lucky suitcase.

His father trained horses at Jefferson Downs Fairgrounds and came home one night with a suitcase full of paints left behind in the tack room. Ryder’s 12-year-old mind nearly popped. An occasional drawing helped him pass the time, but a whole new set of paints provided a new quest to conquer.

The painting world was his oyster but Ryder quipped, “You might not think so if you saw the paintings.” In a more literal sense, quests would also impact his artwork as he became enthralled with fantasy and folklore. Ryder is a self-proclaimed Dungeons and Dragons geek, and art enthusiasts don’t have to look far to see its influence in his artwork.

Textured painting has become a favorite for Ryder. The openendedness of each painting can invoke a different emotion from each observer, and he prefers vibrant colors to pop off the canvas. Ryder said one of his paintings depicting a wayward ship made a clear message to his friend.

“My friend saw this as a symbol of America now.”

At first glance, a casual viewer may not see this message but Ryder didn’t either. That is the beauty of a textured painting.

After years of teaching himself, Ryder enrolled at Southeastern as an art student ready to master his craft. Anyone with an afternoon to walk through Downtown Hammond can see the product of his education through a mural spanning the side of Mariner’s Inn and the art displayed at Noland Stewart Salon.

Currently working as a full-time artist, Ryder’s commissions help pay the bills, and every cent makes him thankful for that suitcase full of paints.

EXNICIOS Extravaganza 2021

Recently, we caught up with John Exnicios from The Exnicios Group of Keller Williams Realty Services and he shared some exciting news about a recent event.

"I'm from New Orleans and my love of Mardi Gras moved with me to Hammond. So as a way to bring some joy back into our lives, my team and I planned the first ever Exnicios Extravaganza," said John.

Hammond businesses came together to put on their own version of the Endymion Extravaganza titled "the Exnicios Extravaganza" sponsored by Fleur De Lis Title Company and Carrie Sanders of GMFS Mortgage.

On Saturday, February 13th they welcomed locals to dance the night away to the Grammy Award-winning Rebirth Brass Band. Normally, the band would be performing at the Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans following the Endymion parade, but this year their vibrant sound echoed through the historic Cate House in Hammond. It was a formal evening filled with tuxedos, ballgowns, and plenty of great food and spirits.

The evening included the crowning of local royalty with Todd Delaune of Red White & Brew being crowned as King and Alyson O'Leary of D.R. Horton becoming Queen. A guest appearance by artist, Terrance Osborne, who graciously brought his original art of Rebirth, which was used for a previous Jazz Fest poster added to the festive atmosphere.

John and his team called the evening a complete success. When asked why he puts his time, energy, and resources into promoting events such as the Exnicious Extravaganza, his response was simple.

"Doing business is about more than just business. It is about building relationships," said John. "Relationships that can withstand difficult times such as what we have all been through recently."

When reflecting on the evening John couldn't help but laugh at some of the happenings. Including Zac from Gnarly Barley having to make an emergency run to bring some more beer.

After the last of the guests left John found that Hammond had really left their mark, quite literally. The ladies high-heeled shoes left divetts thoughout the home so deep it will require some professional help. But in his own words... It was so worth it!

John and his team are looking forward to the next event and want to remind everyone that if you're looking to buy or sell real estate, they are ready to provide the expert service you deserve.

KIMBERLY EASLEY BODDEN'S

Kim grew up in St. Helena Parish in a community named Easleyville which is named after her greatgrandparents who started a store/gas station at the intersection of Highway 43 and 38 in 1928. She attended Oak Forest Academy where she graduated as valedictorian in 1997, LSU in Baton Rouge for undergraduate, and LSU School of Dentistry for dental school and orthodontic residency. After completing residency in 2009, she “hung a shingle” and opened her orthodontic practice in Hammond. Kim strives to treat each patient as a family member and has overwhelming gratitude for her patients and career. Married to her sweet and supportive husband, Shawn, for 15 years, they have two children, Jillian (10) and Eli (8) who attend Holy Ghost Catholic School in Hammond. She asserts “Children have a way of helping you pay attention to the beauty in dayto-day life.” Having lived in Ponchatoula since 2004 and worked in Hammond since 2009, Kim feels fortunate to be able to raise her children and care for her patients in such an amazing community. Aside from family and career, these are Kim’s 5 favorite things:

Time in the country with family

Rescue pups

In 2009, she and her husband adopted an amazing dog, Marvin, from the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter. She made a commitment that rescue dogs would always be a part of her family. After Marvin passed over the rainbow bridge last summer, the family adopted two more rescue pups, Benny and Luna. Within minutes they were part of the “pack”, bringing joy to the family.

Some of her best days are spent with family in rural St. Helena Parish where she grew up. Swimming, walks to the creek, riding side-by-sides and motorcycles, feeding the chickens, picking blackberries and blueberries, burning bonfires, shooting fireworks, and playing football or kickball. She also loves time on the water boating, fishing, tubing, and riding jet skis. Fresh air and sun is good for the soul. It’s truly about enjoying family time together

Summer

The Little Things and Surprises

Kim loves to figure out creative ways to have fun. It may be a pop-up minute to win it game, or an interesting way to hide or wrap a gift. She also loves to surprise her kids with vacations. If at all possible, she keeps trips a secret until the last second. Little things like perennial holiday decorations that she brings out every year and her collection of salt and pepper shakers that her kids and friends take turns picking out which set they want to leave out on the kitchen counter.

Summer is her season! There are so many things about summer that make her smile - sitting by the pool listening to music, swimming, going to the beach, snowballs, long days, more time with family and friends, vacation. Summer is by far her favorite season.

Movie Night

After a busy week, she loves to curl up with a blanket, some popcorn, and the people she loves to watch a movie. Family movies and comedies are her favorites.
