The Christmas season is upon us, and our Northshore Media Group team hopes you’ll all remember to give one of our many local businesses the chance to earn your holiday spending. They’re owned by our neighbors and support local families. We hope you’ll consider purchasing art from one of our many talented local artists, or maybe gift cards from a local restaurant. Consider season passes for the Columbia Theatre or membership to Twin Steeples or Hammond Regional Arts Center. Our community’s self-supportive habits make us strong. Rather than simply clicking the website of a business in another state or country, see if you can get it here first. We always hear “Shop Local” this time of year, and it may sound trite, but shopping locally, especially during the holiday season, will continue healthy growth of this wonderful place we all call home. We hope you’ll enjoy this issue as we celebrate some of our local business success stories, the inspiring vision of SLU’s new President, and other fun and inspiring stories, including some of our neighbors’ favorite Christmas songs. Our next issue will feature the winners of our 2023 Tangi Lifestyles Readers’ Choice awards. Please take a minute to vote at tangilifestyles. com. It’s simple and quick. The last day to vote is December 10th. From all of us at Northshore Media Group, we hope you will join us in GIVING THE GIFT OF LOCAL this year, and most importantly, we wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Back in the Saddle Again From trophies to titles, Dawn Chiasson knows the importance of hard work and dedication and it shows in everything she does. 8 | TangiLifestyles.com

We recently had the opportunity to visit with Tangipahoa native, Dawn Chiasson, at her charming home in Ponchatoula. While there, she introduced us to her husband, Blake, and Fifi, her award-winning show horse. The couple, who have been married for 39 years, have a son, three grandchildren, and a shared love of farm life. Both are competitive horse riders, showing registered quarter horses at local, state, and national events every month. In 2023, both Dawn and Blake placed in the top ten of the 3DOTS Organization. Each received a trophy saddle for earning the most overall points in all combined classes. For Dawn, the saddle is a visual reminder that great things are possible through hard work and perseverance. In 2020 she had an accident which resulted in extensive injuries. Hesitantly, she shared, “I managed to break every rib on the left side of my body. It was a long road to recovery.” Humbly, Dawn credits Blake with her success. “He put

me back on the horse and led me around the arena on a lead, giving me encouragement and literally holding my hand until I healed enough to take over myself,” shared Dawn. “To go from barely being able to walk to winning a competition is an incredible feeling.” When she’s not enjoying farm life, Dawn is serving the community as the founder and managing member of Ponchatoula Auto Title & Notary, more commonly known as Toula Title, which was voted Tangi’s Best Notary Service in 2022. Dawn brings over 35 years of managerial experience to the table including a Bachelor of Science degree in Paralegal Studies from the University of Southern Mississippi. After graduation, she moved back to the New Orleans area where she was named the 1999 New Orleans Pro Bono Project Paralegal of the Year and worked as a paralegal for a local Fortune 500 company. Knowing the importance of being vested in the community, Dawn currently serves on the board of the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce and is an active member of both the Tangipahoa Chamber of Commerce and the Tangipahoa Professional Women’s Organization.

Toula Title has a contract with the State of Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles which enables them to assist with vehicle registrations and license plate renewals. They offer standard plates as well as a large inventory of specialty plates. Toula Title also employs two full-time notaries who can draft, prepare, and execute affidavits, acknowledgments, and authentic acts. In February 2022, Dawn became a Remote Online Notary certified through the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office. This allows her to offer an online notary service to her customers which is a convenient alternative for legal document preparation and execution. Dawn firmly believes and implements the policy of God, family, and then work and everything will work out as planned. Dawn intends to continue providing the community with good, honest service by serving each customer in the same manner she would expect to be treated if she were a customer. To learn more about the services offered at Toula Title, follow them on Facebook where you’ll find weekly updates on Toula Title events, the specialty plate of the week, and local events happening in the area.

“It’s a vibe.” Those are the words of talented barber and up-and-coming businessman, Teal Myers, when he and his wife, Fallon, recently described Teal’s deep passion for the art of barbering.

STUDIO & SALON

By the tender age of 10, Teal drew inspiration from the local barber who became more like extended family. As a boy and then a young man, Teal was drawn to the conviviality of the barbershop. It was a place for different personalities sporting the latest hairstyles and swag to celebrate their culture, the spot where men laughed and swapped stories while getting a shave and a fade.

Written by Betsy O'Leary Photos by Rieyn Helg

This early connection stayed with Teal. Learning the barbering trade was the natural extension of his youthful curiosity.

GROOMED

TangiLifestyles.com 1212 | | TangiLifestyles.com

But while he learned much about the trade in those early years, the burgeoning businessman in Teal soon emerged. Five years ago, with Fallon’s steadfast support, Teal took the plunge and opened his own barbershop in Ponchatoula, The Groomed Studio & Salon. There, he honed his styling and salon skills while building a solid team of talented barbers and stylists. After five years there, the opportunity arose to move his salon to a spacious spot in downtown Hammond, and Teal jumped on it. Once he made the deal, they moved to 209 East Thomas in Hammond. There, Teal established his modern, upscale salon that serves patrons of all ages. Teal brought along two essential team members from his Ponchatoula salon, Shea Verbois and Colby Watson. More than an employee, Shea is a treasured family friend who came with tons of experience acquired from owning his own salon. Shea’s presence gives Teal peace of mind, knowing that he can step away from the salon and it will thrive under Shea’s stewardship. Colby came to Teal fresh out of high school and full of energy. Teal gave him opportunities, and he’s flourishing as a vital member of the team. Clientele include men, women, and children for their salon services, like their charcoal masks, revitalizing steaming facials, shampoos, blow-outs, beard trims, and razor work. Teal and his team of stylists keep up with all the latest styles of braids, knotless braids, twists, retwists, and dreadlocks. They also offer complimentary soft drinks, coffee, tea, red and white wine, champagne, whiskey and bourbon. Teal is not one to rest on his laurels. Intrigued with the idea of spreading his entrepreneurial wings in another direction, he has plans to turn his former Ponchatoula location into a barber school. Within the next six months, his dream of offering others the opportunity to learn the barber trade will begin. If all goes according to plan, he will be accepting his first class for fall 2024 enrollment. Teal wanted to send a special thanks to his mom and dad for their constant prayers and support. "I glean from them for the path they have created for me and the light they have given to the community." You can check out Teal and his team online at thegroomedstudio.com. They can also be found on Instagram, Facebook, and Google, or download their free app, thegroomedstudio. Fallon adds that they are always looking to expand their team, and welcomes licensed barbers and stylists to come in and apply for positions with The Groomed Studio & Salon.

What's your favorite Christmas song?

tangi Education

Written by Betsy O'Leary | Photos by Johnny Chauvin

The new president of Southeastern Louisiana University, Dr. William Wainwright, is no stranger to higher education on the Northshore. Before being appointed Southeastern’s 15th president by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System, he spent nearly a quarter century as a higher education administrator. His most recent stint prior to this appointment was as Chancellor at Northshore Technical Community College (NTCC).

Staying True to the Mission When Southeastern was first established in 1925, its mission was to serve the educational, economic and cultural development of the region. Those tenets remain vital, and when Wainwright assumed the SLU presidency, he brought longstanding ties he’d developed with people all over the Northshore communities. He believes in casting a wide net into the small rural communities dotting the landscape of southeast Louisiana. He’s talked to alumni from the Bogalusa area who told him that back in the 70s, they were only able to attend the university because of the bus that ferried students daily back and forth from St. Tammany and Washington Parishes. To Wainwright, stories like that stress the importance of the institution to many residents in Louisiana’s rural communities. Both the current superintendent of the St. Helena Parish School District and the superintendent of the Bogalusa City School District are Southeastern alumni, which is indicative of the university’s connectivity to the surrounding parishes.

22 | TangiLifestyles.com

Collaboration, Engagement Strengthen Ties Wainwright also chairs the St. Tammany Corporation’s Board of Commissioners. He’s excited by how these endeavors solidify the regional touch, like the recent NSpire Startup Slam that took place at Hammond’s Columbia Theatre and was sponsored in part by STartUP Northshore. That opportunity gave regional entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their products to a panel of judges. Wainwright stressed how business alumni seek further opportunities to engage with graduates who choose to remain in the area. One of his goals as university president is to broaden the outreach and discover new people and talents in the region. He also loves to hear stories from alumni, from how-they-met anecdotes to the way community mentors and faculty impacted the grads’ career trajectories and the long-term relationships that developed from these university ties.

Building a Culture of Future Forward Wainwright’s guiding mantra is “future forward” as he continues to build from established culture. He wants Southeastern to be on the cutting edge, ensuring the needs of present students are satisfied while still planning for the future of the university. He cites two examples of future forward manifesting now — the groundbreaking renovation of D. Vickers Hall and the future Robin Roberts Broadcast Media Center. Both future-focused activities and investments will prepare graduates with programs in strategic communication. Wainwright noted the significant interest from industries to support investments in essential and dynamic communication, including the potential pros and cons of AI as it rapidly evolves. Dr. Wainwright and his wife, Misty, are committed to making Southeastern a globally competitive portal that provides students with state-of-the-art, nationally ranked programs serving the region, state, nation and world.

Noah

KNOWS GRILLIN’ Written by Betsy O’Leary Photos by Stacey Lindsey

For Noah Lindsey, a sixth grade student at the Southeastern Louisiana University Lab School, barbecuing is a passion — and potential career choice. Southerners love their barbecue, and there are many debates to be had over smoky grills about the preference of a dry rub over the glaze of a top-secret family BBQ sauce recipe (and vice versa). The truth is that there are few foods as enticing as barbecue cooking on the grill or in the smoker. Simply catching a whiff of grilling meat wafting through the neighborhood is enough to make someone follow their nose to the source and pull up a chair at the picnic table. You might even say that barbecue is in the bloodline of young Noah Lindsey. He’s the son of Jason and Stacy Lindsey and the grandson of Ponchatoula’s Mike Whitlow. Mike is the owner of The Real Deal — An American Kitchen at 2170 Veterans Avenue in Hammond near the first traffic circle by Club Deluxe Road. 26 | | TangiLifestyles.com 26 Tangilifestyles.com 26 TANGILIFESTYLES.COM

When it comes to championship BBQ, Noah can throw down with the best of them. He loves to enter in the Kids Q category, featuring either chicken or his hands-down favorite, barbecued pork chops. He has not just placed but taken home the blue ribbon for the 13 and under category in multiple competitions. This summer in Morgan City, LA, Noah won first place for his age division. While most of the five or six competitions he enters each year are sponsored by the Barbecue Competitors Alliance (BCA), some are local unaffiliated contests like the recent ‘Toula Que & Fall Fest. Noah is also a familiar face at the annual Smokin’ Blues & BBQ Challenge held each March along the railroad tracks in Hammond. He is a past contestant in the children’s Chicken Little Competition.

Giving Back to His Community While his family, including older sister Ryann, are proud of Noah for bringing home the blue on the competitive BBQ circuit, they are equally impressed with his willingness to cook for others right here in Tangipahoa Parish. For the past three years, Noah has been the guy behind the grill for the Southeastern Lady Lions soccer team. Doing his part to support the Lions at one of their home games each year. He has also barbecued for sheriff’s candidate Chris Gideon during his political campaign. He landed those gigs after first assisting Grandpa Mike, beginning at age seven. Pulling off a major cooking operation for scores of hungry athletes and fans is no small task. The work begins the night before with the prep for the sauces. But it is all fun for the young grill prince who hopes one day to open his own BBQ restaurant right here in the community. Noah also takes pride in being able to serve others some of his delicious offerings straight off the grill. So the next time you catch the tantalizing scent of slowcooked barbecued meat in the air, follow your nose to the source. You just may discover that the young man tending the grill is none other than Noah Lindsey. 27 December December 2023/ 2023 /January January 2024 2024 || 27

Terral, her husband of 33 years, noticed her boredom during the off-season, and took it upon himself to order her a candle making startup kit. When she posted about starting to make candles on social media she received over 200 preorders in a two-week period; hence, Faller Road Candles was born. Encouraged by the interest, Kim began doing research. “I reached out to friends from Vintage who I knew made candles to find out more on the criteria. Things like when to pour, what size wicks go best in different types of jars, etc. We watched countless how-to videos on candle science and continued doing our homework.” She then developed her branding with the help of her friend, Amanda Hammonds, over a cup of PJ’s coffee. She’d heard that it was helpful to name the candles after things that were meaningful to her, and Hammonds, knowing Kim, suggested "Oh Happy Day!” Kim said “Yes, that’s perfect,” and now that has become Faller Road’s signature candle and best seller. Her next request was from her friend Dayna Breaud looking for a signature candle she could sell and market in her business. After months of testing scent combinations, "Can I Get an Amen" was born and has become another fan favorite. “From there,” Kim continued, “it just kept growing, so I started naming them after special things in my life including each of my daughters, Amanda and Allie.”

"Making candles makes me happy. I don't see myself retiring from this any time soon. I enjoy working directly with friends and neighbors, and adding new products each year. That's what makes it so rewarding for me." - Kim Ridgell

Kim sells her candles in several locations throughout the parish, at Roomie’s Merry Market every year, and in her home at two annual shows. They are purchased for home and office, wedding and shower favors, teacher gifts, and more.

Along with several locations throughout the parish, you can also find them on Facebook under Kim Ridgell or Faller Road Candles. Kim looks forward to making “Oh, Happy Day” and other Faller Road Candles products for many years to come.

“Every year, I try to add one more thing, says Kim. “I’ve added wax melts, candle tins, sprays, and dough bowls. This year, I’ve added laundry detergent to the mix, and I do it all here in that little room right there” as she points down the hall. She said she looks for something new for every holiday season. When asked where she sees herself in the future, Kim said she doesn’t really have a huge goal because it has already become way more than she ever imagined, and for that, she is grateful. “I just want it to continue to be a positive thing where there is a lot of interaction with people.” “The way it is now and has been for the past five years, I can do special pours at night if necessary to get orders out for people to pick up. I never want it to get where I’m not offering the same good quality and customer service that I have taken pride in since 2018.” December 2023 / January 2024 | 35

Smiles

Spreading Written by: Abigail Fischer Photos by Ryan Helg

The SLU Police Department is on a mission to bring as many smiles as possible to the patients at Children's Hospital and they need your help.

Every great organization starts with a desire to make a difference. LEOs (Law Enforcement Officers) and Lions for Little Ones is no exception. The Southeastern Louisiana University Police Department, led by Lieutenant Ronald Plaisance and Sergeant Michelle Blanchard, created LEOs and Lions for Little Ones in 2022 with the full support of Chief Michael Beckner. The organization collects toys for the patients at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans throughout the year, with an extra push during the holidays. 38 | TangiLifestyles.com

Lieutenant Ronald Plaisance was inspired to create a toy drive by his cousin who has been successfully hosting toy drives on the West Bank for the last 15 years. He knew they could help the community come together and give back. Each toy donated is distributed to children who are not able to be home with their families for the holidays. “Last year we were able to fill two police cars from the ceiling to the floor. The staff at Children’s told us it was

the largest delivery they had received, and that felt pretty good,” said Lieutenant Plaisance. There are two options for toy donations. For those who like to go shopping personally, new and unwrapped toys can be dropped off in the UPD lobby 24-7. Those who would rather shop electronically can scan the QR-code at the bottom of this article and purchase a toy from the approved toy list provided on the UPD’s Amazon page. The online orders will be shipped directly to Lieutenant Plaisance’s team. Participants can choose toys for every age ranging from newborn to teenagers. This includes books, games, and electronics. For more information on what types of toys can be donated, consult the Children’s Hospital’s approved toy list. Keep in mind, any non-approved toys will not be able to be donated. The organization is currently not accepting monetary donations, however, non-toy items such as tape and wrapping paper are greatly appreciated.

to “shop” and pick the toys they feel suit their child best. The toys are then wrapped and delivered to the patients on Christmas morning. “I hope we get a big turn out this year!” Sergeant Michelle Blanchard shared, "We can really make a difference for a lot of kids with the community's help." To learn more about the LEOs and Lion’s toy drive, scan the QR code below and follow the link to the UPD’s website. Flyers are also posted throughout SLU’s campus, or you are welcome to contact the UPD directly.

The donated items are first inspected by the hospital staff then the toys are set out for the parent’s

Air Products Launches Multi-Decade Community Fund to Support Lake Maurepas Lake Maurepas is home to a thriving community of fishermen, crabbers and recreational boaters alike, who all enjoy the relaxing afternoons with friends and family at their homes and camps along its banks. To help protect the ecology of the lake and to support education and recreational improvements of this special place, Air Products is stepping up with a multi-decade commitment to the community and all who love Lake Maurepas.

LOUISIANA CLEAN ENERGY

In October, the company announced the launch of the Air Products Lake Maurepas Community Fund, which will commit $1 million annually to benefit communities bordering Lake Maurepas starting in 2023 through the overall operation of its Louisiana Clean Energy Complex project, which is currently anticipated to be at least 25 years. Through engagement with its stakeholders, Air Products – via its charitable giving affiliate the Air Products Foundation – will award grants to eligible Lake Maurepas area non-profit organizations supporting ecological, educational, and recreational improvements for those who live, work, and visit the lake area. At launch, the Fund is making inaugural investments to support the missions of two safetyfocused organizations. The Livingston Parish Fire Protection District #2 and the Manchac Volunteer Fire Department will each receive a grant of $400,000 to support their first response missions, facilitating the purchase of new patrol and emergency response boats that will bolster response times and add to overall safety for residents, boaters and commercial fisherman on Lake Maurepas.

$1 Million Yearly Commitment

First response agencies play a critical role in the lake community, and they need to have the best equipment possible to keep our lake safe and healthy. It’s only fitting that the first grants from the Air Products Lake Maurepas Community Fund are directed toward their missions. -Danna LeBlanc, Louisiana Clean Energy Complex

“Air Products and its employees are committed to improving the Lake Maurepas community for all who spend time on the lake and beyond, through supporting and improving the environment, promoting boater safety, and enhancing educational opportunities in the area,” said Danna LeBlanc, commercial executive director for the Louisiana Clean Energy Complex, chair of the Air Products Lake Maurepas Community Fund, and a south Louisiana native. Brian Drury, chief of Livingston Parish Fire Protection District #2 said, “There is no money in our budget to purchase this type of vessel. We would’ve had to ask for a tax to make this happen. We love our community and this donation just enables us to give them more support. It’s another huge step for making it a safer place for everyone to come enjoy our waterways on the weekend – and to live.” George Coxen, chief of the Manchac Volunteer Fire Department said, “Having more emergency response boats helps us fulfill our volunteer spirit of service to our community around Lake Maurepas and improves our ability to get to a scene to assist our neighbors.” The Fund will support parishes bordering Lake Maurepas by funding needed educational, ecological, and recreational projects for years to come, with a focus on Livingston, St. John the Baptist, and Tangipahoa parishes.

Donations to the fire departments in Livingston and Tangipahoa parishes will fund the purchase of rescue boats similar to the one pictured at right.

Last June Bobby Barbier became the 18th baseball coach in Southeastern Baseball history. His wife Kody is a teacher at Madisonville Elementary while his daughter Landry is a 6th grader at Lancaster. He is a native of south Louisiana attending Shaw High School before eventually playing and coaching at Northwestern State. Here are his 5 favorite things:

1

Family Trips: Anytime Coach can spend with his two girls is special to him. Whether it is short trips to the zoo or long trips to Disney, he cherishes his time together with them.

Staff and Players:

2

The relationships built in this game are the most important thing to Coach Barbier. The best part of his job is getting to be around those 50 men everyday.

3

Cooking: From gravies and gumbos to smoking briskets, Coach Barbier loves all types of cooking. You can find him at a tailgate over his black pot at Lion athletics events.

Arcade with Landry: Coach and his daughter, Landry enjoy going to arcades like Dave and Busters. Mom goes, also, and usually ends up beating both of them in all of the games.

4

Nature Hunting has always been a big part of Coach Barbier's life. His dad taught him at a young age, and he has continued to do it until this day. December 2023 / January 2024 | 57
