The Honourable Wine Convent of St Urban Ljubljana was founded on St Martin’s Day, 11 November 1993. Its headquarters was first located in the Ljubljana Town Hall, then later moved to the Ljubljana Castle. Since 31 May 2013 its Ceremonial Seat has been located in the Castle’s Archers’ Tower. The Convent gets its name from St Urban, whose name day is 25 May. This day marks the start of the blossoming of the vine, which is why for seven centuries, St Urban has been the spring patron of vinegrowers and winemakers.
The Wine Convent is a congregation of men. In total it numbers 21 members, all of whom love and respect the vine and wine and work to nurture and develop a true culture of wine enjoyment. In each other’s pleasant company, they familiarise themselves with the special features and characteristics of Slovenian wines and with the ways they are deeply entrenched in the days and holidays of the wine-growing regions; they also take an interest in European and international wines.
