WHOOPI GOLDBERG

TO LAUNCH A WOMEN’S

CANNABIS LINE OF PRODUCTS

B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Whoopi Goldberg is launching a new line of medical cannabis products targeting women. Goldberg, who has been relatively public about her own cannabis use, said her “Whoopi & Maya” company received financial backing from friends and family members, and she will serve as chairwoman. “I want to go nice and slow with this. I don’t want this to be a joke to people. It’s not a joke to women,” Goldberg told USA TODAY. “Whoopi & Maya” offers four products: a balm, a tincture, sipping chocolate, and a bath soak. All products are infused with marijuana and aim to reduce the pain and cramps from menstrual cycles. Pricing is yet to be determined. 8

WWW.EDIBLESMAGAZINE.COM | ISSUE NO. 23

The product line will be available in California during Quarter II of the 2015, hopefully in time for 420. Whoopi is one of a handful of Hollywood celebrities jumping on the cannabis bandwagon. Bob Marley’s family has partnered with a cannabis company to produce Marley Natural products, and Snoop Dogg backs Leafs by Snoop.

California voters this fall are widely expected to pass a ballot measure legalizing recreational cannabis. In many cases, medical and recreational products are identical aside from dosing caps; the only difference is whether a user needs a doctor’s recommendation.

By launching in California, Goldberg and partner Maya Elisabeth are entering one of the world’s largest cannabis marketplaces, with California producing $2.7 billion in sales last year, according to the cannabis-focused data firms New Frontier and ArcView Market Research.

This summer California lawmakers approved series of measures formalizing a form of the state’s new medical cannabis regulatory system. Those measures lay the groundwork for a legal recreational system, and could potentially give anyone offering medical cannabis products a leg up in selling recreational products if they are legalized this fall.

The cannabis industry is one of the country’s fastest growing industries, increasing annually by 31%, with a national market worth $5.7 billion.

“Success at the ballot box would massively increase California’s total legal market share,” Troy Dayton, CEO of The ArcView Group, said in a statement. CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

WHOOPI GOLDBERG’S CANNABIS LINE CONTINUED “vape” pen filled with cannabis oil to combat glaucoma headaches. She said she’s not interested in creating a recreational cannabis company to sell joints to people who just want to get high. Goldberg came up with the idea for the company with a friend, and found Elisabeth to partner with.

Elisabeth said she and Goldberg believe their niche - if you can call 50% of the population a niche, she laughs - is ripe for success. She said women have for generations been herbal healers, and she believes the company’s cannabis products are no different. England’s Queen Victoria is widely believed to have used a similar tincture to relieve her own cramps, Elisabeth said. “I’m excited for people to feel comfortable using cannabis,” said Elisabeth, a founder of the allfemale Northern California edible marijuana products cooperative Om Edibles. Goldberg said smoking pot or drinking cannabis-infused tea has helped control her own cramps and pain, and she currently uses a

Another interest of the two women is in breaking what some are calling the “grass-ceiling” in the semi-legal cannabis industry, which has seen limited participation of minorities and women in leadership roles. When it comes to starting cannabis-focused businesses, state regulators have written rules that tend to favor established small-business owners with access to capital and clean criminal records. And because cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, some would-be entrepreneurs

“A lot of white men don’t have to think about this,” said Elisabeth, who is Caucasian. Goldberg, an actress and comedian known for films like “Ghost” and TV shows like “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” has been open about using cannabis, penning a column for The Cannabist and arguing for legalization on “The View.” “This is a nice quiet way that I can be part of this,” Goldberg said of the new company. “It had to help people if I were going to be involved.” This venture into the public spotlight is anything but quiet, and we thank these women for coming out into the limelight to spread awareness about the benefits of cannabis.

US Supreme Court Rejects Challenge of

Colorado Marijuana Laws On April 4th, the Supreme Court rejected a conservative challenge to the cannabis legalization laws adopted in Colorado and elsewhere that permit adults to buy, or possess one ounce of cannabis.

of cannabis, 22 other states have adopted similar measures. Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska went further and allowed for the production and sale of cannabis for recreational use.

By a 6-2 vote, the justices turned away a lawsuit brought by Nebraska and Oklahoma, whose state attorneys complained that illegal cannabis was pouring into their states as a result of Colorado’s liberalized laws.

Supporters of the laws praised the court’s decision. “This is good news for legalization supporters,” said Tom Angell, chairman of cannabis Majority. “This case, if it went forward and the court ruled the wrong way, had the potential to roll back many of the gains our movement has achieved to date.” Faced with this state-by-state rebellion against an unchanging federal drug law, the Justice Department issued guidance telling prosecutors to focus on “significant traffickers of illegal drugs,” not on users of medical cannabis.

“The state of Colorado authorizes, oversees, protects and profits from a sprawling $100-millionper-month cannabis growing, processing and retailing organization that exported thousands of pounds of cannabis to some 36 states in 2014,” they said. “If this entity were based south of our border, the federal government would prosecute it as a drug cartel.” They argued that Colorado’s law violates the federal Controlled Substances Act, which treats cannabis as a dangerous drug and forbids its sale or use. The prosecuting states urged the Supreme Court to take up the issue as an “original” matter and declare that Colorado’s law was preempted by the federal drug laws. Usually, the high court hears appeals from lower-court rulings. But on rare occasions, the justices are called upon to decide disputes between states. Typically, however, these “original” suits involve disagreements over boundaries or the use of river water that flows from one state to another. The suit brought by Nebraska and Oklahoma also implicitly challenged the Obama administration for its refusal to intervene more directly in Colorado. Since California’s voters in 1996 authorized medical use

Last year, the justices asked U.S. Solicitor Gen. Donald Verrilli to weigh in on the interstate legal battle over cannabis, and in December, he urged the court to turn away the lawsuit. Nebraska and Oklahoma have not suffered a “direct injury” from their neighbor to the West, he said, and they remain free to vigorously police cannabis in their states. In response, the Nebraska and Oklahoma state attorneys said the Justice Department has “turned its back” on enforcing the federal law and is permitting it to be “dismantled by piecemeal nullification.” Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. dissented Monday. “The plaintiff states have alleged significant harms to their sovereign interests caused by another state,” Thomas wrote. “We should let this complaint proceed further rather than denying leave without so much as a word of explanation.” CONTINUED ON PG 20

APRIL FEATURED REVIEWS MARY’S MEDICINALS

Mary’s Medicinals - aka Mary’s Nutritionals in Colorado - is a company that’s name has become synonymous with cannabis infused topicals. The company’s award-winning Transdermal Cannabis Patch instantly earned them a spot as one of the best companies in the industry.. The Transdermal Patches work wonderfully. I use the CBD patches almost weekly for neck pain caused by old injuries. The patches offer a quick onset and unsurpassed duration, Mary’s patches are 2x2 squares, easy to use, and adhere simply to any veinous part of the skin for discreet, all day (or night) relief. I also really enjoy the Muscle Freeze, a gel that combines CBD and natural plant extracts for a soothing, cooling effect. This product would be closely related to BioFreeze or Icy Hot; however, unlike those products, Muscle Freeze rubs into your skin smoothly and does not leave a layer of sticky residue after applying. Additionally, I tried the Elite CBD Compound, which contains a proprietary carrying agent blend for an inside/out approach to healing. The compound is applied topically, and helped me with pain, inflammation and muscle soreness. While reviewing these products I was experiencing severe back pain likely caused by the chain keeping me at my desk - just kidding! Since I don’t believe there is a way to use too many topicals I used all three of Mary’s remedies at the same time and I am pleased to report that within 30 minutes I was no longer experiencing pain. The pain subsided until I needed to reapply several hours later. For more information about Mary’s Medicinals or Mary’s Nutritionals please go to: MarysMedicinals.com or MarysNutritionals.com

The Doobie Company was started with the hope of bringing innovative and healthy medication options to local Proposition 215 patients. While people usually associate medication with health, traditional methods of medicating with cannabis are far from healthy. Traditional edibles tend to be high in sugar content and may contain ingredients that some with healthier or more active lifestyles try to avoid. The Doobie Co. is “dedicated to getting medicated” by offering healthy alternatives to high sugar edibles.

THE DOOBIE CO.

Doobie Juice Medicated E-Liquid uses premium quality shatter in a painstaking and time-consuming cooking and steeping process that has been developed and fine-tuned over the past three years to maximize flavor and potency. The e-juice is offered in Sativa, Indica and Hybrid options and are very discrete. Doobie Juice contains more than 1200 mg of THC per 15 ml bottle and is SC Labs tested. It can be used as an e-liquid, as a tincture, and as an additive that can be dripped on any product for smoking or eating. They also offer .5 gram bottles which has half the potency. The flavors are delicious! Out of the three I tried - Cereal Rip, Vanilla Buzz and Strawberry Slap - my favorite was the Cereal Rip, perhaps because it was the Sativa version. I really enjoyed how smooth it was to hit and how versatile the uses are! Doobie Protein Bars are made from all natural ingredients and are a healthy way to satisfy hunger, consume high-energy nutrients, and (most importantly) get medicated. The bars incorporate extracts in the form of varying butters and oils, which are applied in three different phases of the production process. The medicated protein bars are made from oats, wheat bran, sunflower seed, nuts, and dipped in chocolate. In addition to THC, each bar contains six grams of protein. The scrumptious bars are perfect for daytime medicating. They not only give you the THC pick-meup, the protein gives you a little extra oomph to get up and moving! Cannabis Social Clubs

Shut Down in Colorado Springs The Colorado Springs City Council voted 6-3 to ban cannabis clubs in Colorado Springs. This means clubs will have until 2024 to completely phase out. The ordinance prohibits the opening of any Marijuana Consumption Club - defined as “an establishment, organization, association, club, teapad, or other similar entity or place where a purpose is to allow the consumption of marijuana, medical marijuana or marijuana product on the premises” - but is letting some clubs stay open. There are approximately 15 existing clubs and of those only facilities “lawfully operating” prior to the moratorium beginning September 22, 2015 will be grandfathered in. The compliant clubs will have to apply for licenses from the city and comply with a new set of zoning rules. These

guidelines include a mandatory ventilation and filtration system, no sales, trades, reimbursements, etc., no one under 21 is allowed entry, no on-site cultivation and the clubs must remain out of operation between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. The licensed clubs will then be forced to close their doors in March 2024. There are currently two campaigns currently underway to undo this ordinance. A lawsuit has been filed in the district court by nine companies and 14 individuals. The other is a petition to force a referendum, which is essentially an appeal to the Council to repeal the ban. If Council declines it will be sent to a public vote in a special election. The group spearheading this endeavor must collect 14,649 valid signatures by April 21.

GARDEN OF WEEDEN

Garden of Weeden is a Los Angeles based medicated dried fruit company specializing in small batch, artisanal products. Their two main products are Johnny Appleweed Medicated Apple Rings and Bananas! Medicated Banana Bites. Neither of these products contain any added sweeteners. The owner does not believe in using concentrates as an infusion method. Instead Garden of Weeden uses infused organic extra virgin coconut oil providing a more natural delivery and delicious taste to their edibles. They even print the test results for their coconut oil right on the bag. The healthy portion includes “about 10 servings (serving size: 15mg - about 3 rings only and contains 150mg per bag,” according to the packaging. The rings are low dose which makes them a great daytime medicating option. Garden of Weeden products all are soy and gluten-free as well as vegan friendly! The medicated apples are both delicious and healthy, plus who doesn’t like eating dried apples? After consuming these, not only will your tastebuds be satisfied, you will not be disappointed in the result. They leave you feeling euphoric and productive. For more information about Garden of Weeden check out their website: www.TheGardenofWeeden.com

Derby Bakery - a new kid on the block - entered the cannabis industry in January, though they are clearly not amateurs! The company offers a line of baked goods currently including cookies, peanut butter cups and caramels, although I am sure there is more to come. The company entered the market by adding cannabis to existing award-winning baked goods.

DERBY BAKERY

Their packaging is impeccable! The branding is subtle and attractive, they also use high-end, food grade, re-sealable packages that keep the products extra fresh. This is a nice touch for baked goods as I don’t always want to eat a full cookie, sometimes I just want to nibble throughout the day. The cookies are soft and delicious. There is a slight hint of cannabis but is mostly masqued. Derby Bakery infuses their products with a hybrid CO2 oil allowing for a nice mellow effect. Both the Lucky Lemon Cookie, made with white chocolate chips and Macadamia nuts as well as the Triple Crown Cookie, which is a chocolate pecan nut cookie are wonderful and the packaging really does keep the cookies soft. Each contain 40mg of THC. The Daily Double Peanut Butter Cups are milk chocolate cups with rich peanut butter centers. The infused peanut butter within the cocoa cup is whipped to velvety texture, and treats your taste buds with a medium roasted, malty nut flavor that is salty and semi-sweet. Derby Bakery Peanut Butter Cups use organic, locally-sourced ingredients from Sonoma County. The Daily Double Peanut Butter Cups are packaged 4 per bag in dosages of 20mg per cup. These peanut butter cups rival Hershey’s, they are absolutely delectable! Since they are low dose I decided to eat all of them at once. Once the medication hit I was not left debilitated and really enjoyed the effects of the Derby Bakery products. As their packaging packaging suggests, it was absolutely my lucky day, in that I had the chance to try these edibles! If interested in a phenomenal new edible check out Derby Bakery online at: www.DerbyBakery.com

PUNCH EDIBLES

Just as the company’s name would suggest, Punch Edibles will hit you hard. These chocolate bars are small but mighty. There are two main products that come in various flavors. The PunchBar comes in 150 and 225mg and in thirteen flavors - I tried the Toffee Milk Chocolate and Mint Bars. The Punch Combos come in 225mg dosages and five different flavors - I had the Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Crunch and the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter & Jelly Combos. My favorites were the Mint Chocolate Punch Bar and the Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Crunch Combo. Each product is scored out in nine bite size pieces. Each of those pieces contains 25mgs and just over 12 calories - which means these are a great low-calorie option for anyone looking to medicate on a diet! Punch Edibles are made with the highest quality Absolute Shatter and are lab-tested for potency and purity. The Punch packaging is very well done. It contains a significant amount of information considering the shortage of surface area. There is a cannabis warning decal, full nutrition facts, and an image depicting the scored out chocolate bar showing the milligrams of each piece. In preparation for this review I knew I had four flavors to try but had been warned about these potent little devils, so I only ate one square from each bar. Approximately, 45 minutes later I was hit hard. Needless to say, these are not edibles for the faint of heart, nor are these daytime medicating edibles. These are the type of edibles you have after a long week and you deserve a good rest. Punch Edibles began in 2014 and have been doing so well the Punch brand has expanded into media and concentrates with Punch Media and Punch Extracts. BETTY KHRONIC

A new healthy edible company has hit the scene that you need to know about, Betty Khronic. They make Raw Vegan Cannabis infused Energy Bars, that are all Sativa specific. Coming from athletic backgrounds, the founders of Betty Khronic incorporate cannabis as a part of healthy lifestyle, in addition to exercise and clean eating. They extract only high grade lab-tested, Sativa strains by hand, using 100% Organic Cold Pressed Coconut Oil. The extraction process is done in small quantities the all natural way, using NO toxins such as Butane or CO2. Yes, this process is more tedious and more labor intensive, but it is all natural; the way nature intended the plant to be. Extracting in small quantities also ensures consistency within their extraction formula. From the extraction process to creating the bars everything is done in house, literally from farm to table. The energy bars are 40mg each (two in package), and contain almonds, chia seeds, cacao, pepitas, dates and canna-coconut oil. You feel like you’re eating something that’s good for you when you eat a Betty Khronic edible! In addition to being Sativa edibles only, they are Vegan, Paleo, Raw, Organic Ingredients, Gluten Free, GMO Free, Caffeine Free, contain No Artificial Preservatives, and have No Added Sugars. To learn more about Betty Khronic go to www.BettyKhronic.com

DANK GRASSHOPPER

This is by far the strongest candy bar I’ve ever had. Ever! Which is not necessarily a bad thing. But if you’re new to edibles, it would be wise to avoid this specific bar like a plague. You don’t want to start with a bad experience. If you have ample experience medicating with edibles, and have an idea of how much cannabis you can tolerate, then this bar is fantastic. The bar comes very attractively wrapped. Well, because it looks like money. It’s a very playful way of letting the consumer know what to expect from ingesting it. The pertinent information is clearly visible. As someone who’s had their share of products with down to business medically astute packaging, it’s nice to see companies give you the same information in a more esthetically pleasing way. With edibles this strong, I usually find it difficult to measure out how much to eat consistently. Some bites seem to kick harder than others from day-to-day. But with this 1000mg bar, it’s been incredibly consistent. I know that I need between 20-30mg to get a good night sleep, and with this bar, I can calculate fairly consistently how much to eat every night. This product may not be suitable for the casually medical or recreational user, but it is excellent for the experienced patients who need higher doses or prefer to more precisely calculate their preferred dosage.

The ProCannaZine Medicinal Elixir is a lab-tested, syrup concentrate containing 100mg THC, that can be added to any drink “to taste the flavor and feel the high,” according to the product label. The company suggests to start by diluting a portion of the bottle with 8-16oz water or beverage of your choosing. The bottle is sealed and with a child-resistant cap to ensure that there are no accidental overdoses. ProCannaZine provides several flavors, but I happened to taste the Tropical flavor. I decided to pour half the bottle into a Sprite and proceeded to see what would happen. I must admit I am not all that familiar with the effects of typical cannabis syrups as they are not usually my thing. However, I was very pleased with ProCannaZine. The onset was smooth, but it hit me hard. It was the kind of high that just made me laugh uncontrollably. I laughed at absolutely nothing until my belly ached, and then, I passed out - hard. It took me out for the entire night and I did wake up a bit groggy. So, this review comes with a warning: ProCannaZine offers a superb product, please be advised this is a knockout type of edible, so I suggest this be taken on a Friday night in preparation to sleep in on Saturday. If you’d like to find out more about ProCannaZine, check out their instagram: @ ProCannaZine_Elixir

PROCANNAZINE

VARAVO: CHOCOLATE & VAPES Varavo is a company I have had the pleasure of working with since its official launch in September 2015. Varavo offers a full line of cannabis oils and cannabis infused chocolates. The Varavo line is simple and classic. They currently only offer Milk, Dark and White chocolate. They have not added any other fancy flavors or other additives, instead they went with the classics and they have done it well. Each of the flavors are offered in 50, 200 and 500mg (total package). Uniquely Varavo opted to offer ‘chocolate chunks’ instead of a traditional bar. Each chunk is individually wrapped in a childproof blister pack. Each piece of chocolate is stamped with the Varavo name and a proprietary cannabis emblem ensuring that there is never confusion or accidental consumption due to not knowing these are cannabis infused products. The chocolate is smooth and delicious. There is absolutely an underlying marijuana flavor, however, it is not at all offensive - it does not overpower the chocolate. Varavo has gone above and beyond with their packaging. Their packaging is clean and professional looking. It includes all pertinent information as well as some bonuses including a Braille warning label. The cannabis warning emblem is seen throughout the packaging from the outer box to the blister packaging and again on the actual product. They have also included a ‘dosage meter’ to intended to give patients a better understanding of how much THC is in each dose, as well as how long to wait for the onset of effects. These products and packaging were clearly designed and

created with the patients in mind. The chocolates are potent and consistent. Each time I have tried Varavo’s chocolates I have had the same high with the same onset. The high is mellow, I have both a head and body high, but never feel couch-locked after consuming a Varavo chocolate chunk. Additionally, I happen to know that Varavo’s White Chocolate Chunks are our Editor-in-Chief's favorite white chocolate product on the market. Mostly white chocolate edibles taste horrible because it is difficult to mask the cannabis flavor, not Varavo’s! Varavo also offers Sativa and Indica disposable cartridges. Each strain is offered in 350 and 700mg. The company also offers a vape pen and cartridge with the logo printed on the end. The pen and cartridges are both black allowing for a seamless and sharp looking vaporizer. The oil is the perfect honey color. They do not add any additives, there is no glycol or glycerin, just a cartridge filled with quality cannabis oil. The oil tastes clean and has a nice flavor. Admittedly, I am not really a vape-er, I would much prefer some good flower any day, but I really like Varavo’s vapes. The indica gave me a really great body high and I only needed a couple of puffs right before bed for a restful night sleep! Both Varavo’s chocolates and vaporizers are awardwinning, without a doubt they earned those titles due to their exceptional and superior products. For more information about Varavo please go to: www.Varavo.com

COVER FEATURE: TRIPP KEBER CEO & CO-FOUNDER, DIXIE BRANDS

there with them. I chickened out. I didn’t want to live in New York. I didn’t want to be a Wall Street finance guy. I wanted to be an entrepreneur and work for myself.” “The world as I knew it was over. I thought my life was going to be carefree. Now there were 7 women without husbands, and 11 children without fathers,” Tripp said. Fast forward a few months later, “My wife was in love with another man. That just shook me to my core. I was already dealing with more emotion than any person should have to. I had no escape, living in a state where I knew no one, other than his soon to be ex-wife and children.” Tripp acknowledges that with how he was feeling at the time, a gun should never have been in the mix. He was ashamed about that moment for years. Even though he describes himself as a coward in that moment, he takes suicide seriously and says of others going through depression, “You don’t know what that person is going through.”

This issue, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tripp Keber, the CEO and Co-Founder of Dixie Brands. He says he and his business partner, Chuck Smith, got into this business by happenstance, in 2009, which he calls “The Dark Days.” They were real estate developers right at the turn of the economy. Being from the South, they decided to name their company Dixie, paying homage to South of the Mason-Dixon Line. Prior to launching Dixie, Tripp says he was Denver’s oldest teenager; a true party boy. His successful real estate business and sale of his voice and data tech company in 2001 afforded him some spare time and a temporary retirement, even though he was far too young to actually retire. “We did not get into it to help people. We got into this to make money, initially. Boy, were we wrong, the money didn’t show up or materialize for a while. But more importantly we started hearing from patients that the products were really helping them on a level that alcohol and opioids couldn’t,” Tripp said. That positive reaction to their initial product launches inspired them to look into deeper opportunities in the industry. The elixir was their first product, when cannabis infused beverages was relatively untouched by the infused products markets. At the time, no one was sure how to market to the range of demographics medicinal cannabis appeals to. But they believed that it was possible to create a brand and establish a moral high ground

based on making quality products. There was a lot of theory that legalization was going to happen, but no one realized how long it was going to take and how complicated the matter would be. They certainly could not have predicted that 50% of the industry would be infused products, growing every year. In 2010, Tripp had half a million dollars invested in the business, being far too frugal to walk away, and no return in the near future, he doubled down repeatedly. He makes it no secret that he is just not one of those people who has had a lifelong love affair with cannabis, aside from the occasional social toke. He explained that he just never knew how great the plant is for you. Tripp says that cannabis has helped him personally with alcohol, “I just chose the wrong solution to many years.” He shared with me details of a story he talked about at the November 2015 Marijuana Business Daily Conference. In 2002, around February-March, he had an extremely dark moment that involves holding a 9mm pistol on the kitchen floor of his home, and considering suicide. He had just sold his tech company September 1st, 2001, and 10 days later 9 of his friends (3 of whom he lived with) died in the World Trade Center attacks. He was heading to New York on the train when the tragedies occurred. He softly recollected, “Candidly, I should have been

He picked himself up and moved on, while supressing his feelings with drugs and alcohol. He says that it was risky for him to admit that to a crowd of 6,000, at the conference where he first told the cautionary tale. There’s a perception of Tripp being a “Willy Wonka of Weed” type character, where he is perceived as invincible and infallible, while he says that is just not the case. Tripp's younger brother, a cannabis enthusiast introduced him to cannabis. Since his brother managed to stay out of trouble, and it was then Tripp figured that maybe his little brother was smarter than he was. “Alcohol is a depressant. I had a pretty healthy relationship with alcohol, I get angry, those emotions are generally deep seeded or from your childhood or whatever pisses you off. It’s easier to control when under the influence of cannabis as opposed to alcohol or God forbid some stronger drug. I use marijuana today to control my emotions. If anyone is ever on that floor, [they can look at me and say] if that turkey can do it, so can I!,” Tripp said. The experience that he shared is one that many can relate to, and it certainly humanizes the persona the public knows him as. Last year, Tripp and Dixie were featured as part of the cast of Pot Barons, a cable television show about the legal emerging cannabis industry in Colorado. Not only was it a risky proposition to air their operation on national television, Tripp was terrified they were going to name the series “Marijuana Morons” and cast him as the lead. Tripp acknowledges what an honor it

was to be involved in the series, and says that it was incredibly rewarding to reach a demographic that was probably not acutely aware of what is going on in cannabis. However, Tripp confided to me that his dad said, “What are you some kind of asshole? Every Time they show you, you’re drinking Tequila and smoking cigars!” While some acting and editing may have been involved, Tripp says, “Doesn’t mean we weren’t silly on occasion! Nevertheless responsible journalist that took true interest, Jerry Cohen, was passionate about this plant, wanting to present it in the most positive light.” Pot Barons portrayed some of the aftermath of 2014’s Colorado regulation changes. Edible companies had to change their packaging numerous times and extraction companies had new explosion-proof hood regulations. These changes put many producers out of production for months on end, until in compliance and approved by the respective regulatory agencies. California, among other states, are facing regulation changes as the “kinks” get ironed out with the legislatures. Dixie has weathered the storm. When asked what it took to get through those trials and tribulations, Tripp said, “It starts at the top, at the leadership level. And then it takes delusional confidence, which can work for or against you. We have almost 100 team members in Colorado

alone, day in and day out. It takes a strong management team, dedicated employees, and a tremendous amount of intellectual horsepower. 'Stick-to-it-iveness' is the key. 2016 is going to be the breakout year in the cannabis industry especially for infused product vendors.”

T-shirt and say, ‘Brother, how are we going work together?’ It’s a collaborative effort, we have to work together. All aspects of society and the industry must come together to make this plant mainstream and socially accepted in as many circles as possible,” Tripp said.

With California being the world’s 8th largest economy on the planet, Tripp optimistically thinks that California will learn from Colorado and potentially do a better job. “Stealing from one is plagiarism, borrowing from many is research. Hopefully they use only the best aspects from each state. When you’re first you don’t have that luxury. It’s scary to be a pioneer,“ Tripp said.

Tripp believes (and so do we) that Medical and Recreational regulations should indeed be separate, and have different taxation rates. “We don’t tax pharma? So why do we tax medical marijuana?,” he said.

When asked how special interest may play a role in California’s regulations, Tripp said, “Cannabis has become big business. There are a lot of people pulling in multiple directions. I’m proud of Colorado. But it will not be like the first time. People will probably unfairly profit initially. Regardless, we are making progress, with a plant that’s been marred by black market stigma.” “Day in and day out working hand in hand with regulators. The regulators seek first to understand then be understood. They’ll reach across and say, ‘Teach me. Educate me. Show me the reasons behind this.’ We’re happy to build a facility to proudly show off to state regulators and federal law enforcement. I’m not a marijuana activist. I’m a reformist. I have to be able to reach across the aisle, even if i’m in a business suit and they’re in a Bob Marley

He also agreed with my comments on how despite the rigorous child proofing regulations, those are all meaningless if the user is not responsible. He even shared hate mail stories of people sending in pictures with a gun to the Dixie bottle because they couldn't get the bottle open. He thinks by 2018-2020 cannabis will be rescheduled Federally, or some kind of executive order will go through by then. Dixie is now in 6 states and 2 countries, Arizona, Oregon, Colorado, California, Nevada, Washington, and Australia. In addition to their THC infused drinks, chocolates, mints and tinctures, they have recently launched a pet hemp CBD line called Therabis. Keep on the lookout for more products and exciting endeavors from Dixie Brands. They are another example of how Colorado companies are leading the way in the Green Rush. For those of us in other states, we continue to have reform to look forward to.

POT & PREJUDICE No doubt the Dixie brand is recognizable to those in the cannabis community and many of those not in the industry, thanks to MSNBC’s “Pot Barons”. Dixie Brands boasts an extensive list of products ranging from the well-known Dixie Elixirs to topicals, chocolates, drops, capsules, mints, and vapes to a pet line called Therabis, and now even a full hemp CBD line named Aceso.

Their range of products allows the company to hit more target markets based on need, dosages and consumption abilities. In my humble opinion, I love their elixirs/drinks. Truth be told, there is one in my refrigerator at all times. Not only do they offer a great value, but minimal consumption provides you maximum benefit. Plus they all taste great! Dixie prides themselves on being a trusted source for innovative, safe, effective and delicious cannabis products. All of their products are well controlled, specifically dosed, and produced with the highest regard to quality. They use only high quality CO2 to infuse their handcrafted products. For the 420 celebration they have “flipped the script”. Instead of cashing in on the influx of sales for the “Super Bowl of Cannabis”, they are giving back. As one of the largest companies in the industry, it is important that they pave the way for social responsibility. Dixie teamed up with Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) to shed light on the harsh consequences of the U.S. war on marijuana. Dixie and MPP are on a mission this high holiday to change the paradigm surrounding 420. For every case of the Limited Edition 100mg Wildberry Lemonade Elixir sold to a dispensary/distributor in California or Colorado, they will donate $15 to MPP to help fund the fight on the legalization policy. They are not only talking the talk; they are walking the walk! The packaging is fun, just like the 420 celebration reflects. The flavors POP on your tongue like a 420 celebration should, but more importantly they are doing good for our community! Do us all a favor this 420 holiday season and be sure to purchase a Limited Edition 100mg Wildberry Lemonade Elixir to support the fight for our companies, our friends, our family. Wild Berry Lemonade Dixie Elixirs, made only for the 420 holiday season, are a great combination of a delicious product and meaningful philanthropy that will actually effect change and all of us that believe in the positive effects of cannabis/MMJ. From drinks, to chocolates, to mints...to the future. To find out more about Dixie and the Pot & Predjudice campaign, please go to: www.DixieElixirs.com

DABSOLUTE CONCENTRATE PEN The Dabsolute Concentrate Pen is a 100% U.S. manufactured product that caters to patients and connoisseurs who value performance, durability and local business. This pen is a product that stands alone amongst the competition because it simply is amazing at what it does. The Dabsolute Concentrate Pen is a no non-sense product designed to NEVER clog and does not require cartridges! The beauty of the Dabsolute Concentrate Pen is that you have full control over what you put in it., versus trusting a company to use proper ingredients, but not knowing what they are really using. The Dabsolute Concentrate pen is made from surgical grade stainless steel making it virtually indestructible, bolsters one of the largest surface area heating elements in the industry and is covered by a lifetime warranty against material defects and workmanship. If you follow the instructions and your Dabsolute will last forever - don’t use it over 17W and your coil will last 6+ months easily. As for cleaning, it is as simple as submerging the atomizer and mouthpiece in a bath of 91% isopropyl alcohol. The Manager/Owner of Dabsolute Earl Ross, has a degree in Chemical Engineering and has big plans for the future of his company, “As the company grows we will diversify our portfolio in the cannabis industry, we have some exciting new technology not yet seen by the world, and when we bring it to full commercialization I think we’re going to make a significant and positive impact on the industry and country as a whole.” We tested this product by using a CO2 concentrate. The pen came in a nice kit that was easy to assemble. Upon putting it together, I placed a small portion of CO2 in the pen and began to inhale. The pen is extremely smooth, it does not taste like it is overheating (and burning) the oil - like some pens do. After using it, we can truly say there is no comptetion to U.S. made products. The Dabsolute Concentrate Pen is DABSOLUTELY a great replacement for anyone who is over having to carry around a rig. The Dabsolute Concentrate Pen (DS HP Kit) retails for $225. For more information on where to buy The Dabsolute Concentrate Pen please go to: www.TheDabsolutePen.com

KEEF COLA U I

HIGH OCTANE

pon first sight of these aluminum bottles I thought they may be some sort of new brand of beer. Please keep in mind I am new to Colorado, and had no idea what Keef Cola was. After further examination, it was apparent that I would be reviewing a soda.

sampled the High Octane flavor which is modeled after Mountain Dew (in the real world). Keef Colas are only 10mg so they are perfect for the recreational user interested in trying a high quality edible that is not overpowered by the cannabis flavor. In fact, there is virtually no cannabis taste at all. Keef Cola also offers a 100mg medical line. The flavor excited my senses and triggered a synaptic pathway that revealed childhood memories of my friends and I chugging Mountain Dew before skateboarding. I am seriously thinking of switching out my regular sodas for these things!

E

ven though the name of the flavor was High Octane, I felt extremely relaxed after drinking it and was able to focus on my work. Everything about Keef Colas are great! From the packaging to nostalgic taste, I would absolutely recommend this to anyone!

PRODUCT REVIEW

KYMBER WARD STAFF EDITOR Edibles List first came to learn about Karl Young and Hermetic Botanicals late last year and then he met our California team at the 2015 Best of Edibles List Awards Show on January 8, 2015. As the Event Director I was a bit stressed pre-show, Karl introduced himself and asked if I wanted to try a product that would help with clarity, concentration and memory. My answer was obviously “YES!” Minutes later, he appeared with a package that read ‘FOCUS Nootropic Gummies’, and instructed me to eat one or two of the gummy bears. Approximately thirty minutes later I went to find the man who had given me a miracle! I quickly noticed my nerves had calmed, and I was able to effectively focus and implement what needed to be done prior to 35 vendors and over 500 people showing up. Karl is a remarkable man with a remarkable product. After an electroshock injury to his left eyebrow on a 440v service powerline, he was left with very little functionality, aggression, depression and a limited ability to communicate. While on his road to recovery, he discovered an amazing series of plant-based compounds that help with reconnecting the mind and body. As he began to heal, he began developing this plant-based nootropic that he blended with a gummy delivery. Additionally, Hermetic offers topicals including Soothing Embrace Body Lotion and Essence of Passion Massage Oil. I must say, the Soothing Embrace Body Lotion is truly one of my favorite cannabis lotions to date. I never really like cannabis lotions because most leave a slimy residue on your skin or feel greasy. Hermetic’s body lotion is as smooth as silk. It hydrates, moisturizes and feels like a second skin. The Essence of Passion Massage Oil is another fantastic product. Unlike many of the other cannabis infused massage oils, Essence of Passion does not smell like cannabis, instead it is almost odorless and only needs a few drops to do the job. In an attempt to keep this PG, I will tell you that if you are looking for a great way to spice up your time in the bedroom Essence of Passion will be a welcomed addition. These hemp CBD edibles and topicals are truly wonderful products and I urge you all to go to HermeticBotanicals.com and learn more. You’ll thank me later when you can focus and blow your… mind - all at one time!

FOOD SCIENCE: RACHEL ZEMSER STAFF EDITOR

KEEPING IT CLEAN your flavor supplier typically they have common flavors sold in bulk.

Everyone wants their product to hit all the current trend buttons (natural, clean label, locally sourced, GMO Free, Organic) - but sometimes you have to compromise in order to ensure that you are creating something that is both safe and affordable. It also helps to understand that just because something sounds like it is not natural, doesn’t mean that it isn’t!

label bacteria inhibitor that is created via fermentation of milk and sugar with probiotic organisms and works in a wide variety of applications like salad dressings and cured meats, soups and dairy products. It will be pricier than the synthetic options, but allows you to maintain a “natural” statement on your label (assuming all other ingredients are natural as well). Of course, it is always an option to cook you product. Canned foods and jarred shelf stable sauces often just rely on heat as the preservation method. However. any thermal process would have to be approved by the FDA and local health inspector. Another option for preservation salt or sugar, these also inhibit bacteria by lowering the water activity of the product.

Let's begin with mold inhibitors. If you are a baked goods manufacturer and plan to last on the shelf, your products will need to contain something to keep the fuzzy stuff off your brownies. Luckily, there are a wide variety of both natural and synthetic solutions. Potassium sorbate for example is a great yeast and mold inhibitor that is inexpensive and works in a wide variety of pH’s and food bases. This is not one of the natural choices, but it does the job! Sodium benzoate is also cheap, synthetic and keeps the bad bacteria at bay! As a more natural option called cultured dextrose (sold locally by Mezonni Foods), is a cleaner

What about flavorings? No one in the specialty food industry wants to put artificial flavor in their products and that is understandable, but keep in mind natural flavors are more expensive and less concentrated than artificial, so to get the desired flavor impact you will have to use more of them. For instance, if you wanted to flavor a lemon cake, you may only need .2% artificial flavoring, but it will take 2 to 3% to achieve the same effect using natural flavors. So, what can you do? The answer is WONF (with other natural flavors), a specific blend of flavors similar to what you are looking for, but at a slightly lower cost. Also, be sure to talk to

There are always natural alternatives in the world of ingredients and it’s just a matter of balancing out what you need with the right price point. Marijuana infused food products need to be well preserved and properly made to ensure they are safe and effective when consumed. Contact your local food scientist for assistance if you have any doubt about your food products safety before selling it at the next cannabis trade show!

I get calls from various start up companies asking me how they can keep their label “clean” and ensure that their product has no preservatives, is all natural and uses fresh local ingredients—oh and they also want it to be affordable and shelf stable too!

Even starches can fall into the natural or not natural debate. If a starch is referred to as "modified food starch" it is not a natural thickener. You will need to ask your supplier for a natural "unmodified food starch. There are additional ways to thicken a product using dehydration or water evaporation using tomato paste (if your product is tomato based). There are even different gums and hydrocolloids you can experiment with. Most hydrolloids are natural like xanthan, gum Arabic, and gum acacia. Gum supplier websites like TICGums.com offer a wealth of information about gums and how to use them.

TRUMP “BASICALLY” FOR

MEDICAL MARIJUANA KYMBER WARD STAFF EDITOR In a February 10th interview, on The O’Reilly Factor with Bill O’Reilly, Donald Trump weighed in on his view of the cannabis industry when O’Reilly started the conversation regarding illegal drug trafficking over state lines from legal states. Trump agreed that people going to Colorado to

get legal cannabis and selling it over state lines is “a real problem.” In terms of actually answering the question at hand - what will you do to stop the trafficking? - Trump answered in true Presidential Candidacy form, “I would really want to think about that one Bill; because in some ways I think it’s good, in other ways it’s bad. I do want to see what the medical effects are.” He also goes on to proclaim that as far as medical marijuana goes he is “100% in favor of it,” yet alludes to not being in favor of adult use by retorting to O’Reilly with, “But what you are talking about, perhaps not. It is causing a lot of problems out there.”

In true O’Reilly/Trump fashion, the pair went head-to-head about the validity of medical marijuana. O’Reilly taunted Trump by calling medical marijuana ‘a ruse,’ suggesting that people just use it to get legal pot. Trump quickly responded that he knows several people with ‘serious problems’ and that medicinal cannabis indeed helps them.

While this interview does show Trump in support of medicinal cannabis, this does not mean that cannabis advocates should begin praising him as a cannabis supporter. Only time will tell how he intends to handle adult use and adult use laws if elected President later this year.

Cannabis Killed My

Stage IV Lung Cancer

Monday, December 16th 2013, I had been complaining of a small niggling pain on my left side around my ribs for a few days, but nothing too bad. I’d had an hour massage on the previous Friday, so I thought that I was just feeling the after effects of that. As the days went on each time I took a big deep breath I did have slight pain on my left side, so I got it checked out. On Thursday, the 19th of December 2013, an Emergency Department doctor found a mass on my left lung after a chest X-Ray this was quickly followed by CT scan with contrast.

The ED doctor came out and motioned for us to come into her office and sit down not saying a word. She opened the conversation with, "I’m so very sorry.…..What? I’m so very sorry. There appears to be a sizable mass in your left lung – what? What is it? Have you ever smoked? What? No? Never! The look on the Doctors face said it all. There seemed to be silence, just the doctor looking at me and that time seemed to be slowed down somehow. She kept saying sorry, sorry to give you this news so close to Christmas. What? She said she has contacted a Respiratory Registrar to come down to see me to book in for a biopsy of the mass. My head was spinning! I recall saying a number of times, what? No? What? I don’t smoke, I never have, what? Well we can remove it right? What? It’s like I could hear myself saying the same thing over & over but I couldn’t stop. But I’m so healthy. What? No? It really did feel like she was talking about someone else, It didn’t feel real. I was thinking to myself, it will be fine, Doctors will operate and take it out somehow, it will be fine. It wasn’t fine. After several attempts to biopsy the tumor, finally on Monday, the 13th of January, 2014 the Doctors were able to get a sample with a CT guided chest/lung biopsy through my back. The X-Ray taken 4 hours after to check the lung, showed a minor 76

WWW.EDIBLESMAGAZINE.COM | ISSUE NO. 23

hemorrhage around the left lung mass and as a bonus they managed to give me a pneumothorax (partially collapsed lung).

Wednesday, the 15th of January, we got the results, Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (adenocarcinoma). A PET scan was booked to see if it had spread, as I was a non-smoker the doctors were convinced that the lung would not be my primary. Friday, the 17th of January 2014, I had the PET scan. The doctors found that the lung mass was the primary at 5 cm, tgwo lymph nodes in the chest and one in the base of my neck were affected, and there was fluid around my heart, and cancer in the pleura or lining of the lung. The Doctors told me as it had spread to the lining of my lung and lymph nodes they classified me as stage IV Terminal Lung Cancer with a prognosis of 6-9months to live. Thursday, the 30th of January 2014, the first round of chemo began (5 hours). Thursday, the 6th of February 2014, the second round of chemo began (1 hour). Friday, the 14th of February 2014, we found out that the biopsy taken was positive for Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) mutation, so no more chemo, yeah! Thursday, the 20th of February 2014, I started the non-chemotherapy drug TARCEVA 150mg tablets (Erlotinib), this is a EGFR inhibiting drug. Tuesday, the 25th of February 2014, I started juicing heaps of fresh cannabis leaves. Wednesday, the 26th of February 2014, my husband cooked our first batch of cannabis oil. Sunday, the 20th of April 2014, my husband cooked our second batch of cannabis oil. Tuesday, the 22nd of April 2014, we received cannabis oil from an

experienced medical cannabis activist that was prepared to help. Tuesday, the 20th of May 2014, we started experimenting with suppositories and eventually by mixing .5ml of organic coconut oil with .5 ml cannabis oil in a 1 ml syringe just straight up. We call it ‘the backdoor method.’ I believe that this was our break through and also with this method I experienced no ‘high’ and was able to have the full 1 ml of cannabis oil per day as that is what was recommended for an aggressive cancer. Wednesday, the 3rd of September 2014, PET scan Conclusion: complete metabolic response. Residual nonFDG avid scar tissue in the left upper lobe corresponding to the site of the previously intense FDG avid primary malignancy. NO CANCER!!! Yes, there is a lot more detail that I could go into but this is just a quick look at my year so far. I hope it helps someone if so, please let me know. My husband and I would like to thank all the amazing people from around the world that helped us on a Facebook Group Site called ‘Cannabis Oil Success Stories’. These people taught us all we know and helped save my life. Also, a BIG thank you to: www.UnitedPatientGroup.com www.FirebirdTouchTherapy.com www.chrisbeatcancer.com (for good nutrition & other advice) www.cannabiscurescancer.com www.cureyourowncancer.com Remember happiness is a choice… choose every day to be H A P P Y!
