CBD Patient
Research Opportunity A UCLA-based research group is interested in identifying patients who are currently benefiting from Cannabidiol (CBD) therapy. If you or someone you know has been experiencing relief from medical symptoms through the use of high-CBD flowers, concentrates, tinctures, or other high-CBD products, please read on regarding the possibility of enrolling in observational trials in exchange for free or greatly subsidized medication. The CBD Research Institute (CBDRI) was established by a group of UCLA-based researchers and physicians with the aim of accelerating CBD research. Frustrated by the political hurdles standing in the way of conventional academic research into a cannabis-derived compound, and yet inspired by the promise that CBD has shown outside of the academic realm (carrying life-saving benefits for epileptic children in Colorado, for example), the CBDRI aims to conduct observational studies of patients using CBD for other medical conditions. Housed at the California Nanosystems Institute on the campus of UCLA, the CBDRI
has designed a highly standardized, medical-grade CBD product for use in these trials and intends to provide it free of charge to eligible patients, in exchange for timely submission of patient data through our web-based data collection portal, in order to help accelerate this important research. If you would like to be considered for inclusion in these studies, please send an email with the following information to contact@cbdresearch.org. (All information will be kept confidential and only used for the purposes of the study.) • Name • Date of Birth • Medical Condition Being Treated with CBD • Specific Symptoms Being Treated with CBD • Form of CBD Being Consumed: (Flower, Concentrate, Tincture, etc) • Brand of CBD Product Being Consumed (if applicable) • Approximate Dose and Frequency Being Used • Amount and Quality of Relief Being Achieved

SAFETY IS USER RESPONSIBILITY
B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF We are two years into the country’s “social experiment” with legalizing cannabis in Colorado and Washington, and we are still dealing with the controversy of the safety of edibles. California is just shy of being medically legal for twenty years. It’s safe to say, cannabis infused edibles are not going anywhere, and now account for 50% of the market share.
the timer. Once the timer is set, and the button is pressed, you have a 5 second countdown to cancel before being locked out. The safe remains locked until the timer reaches zero. The Kitchen Safe has no built-in overrides or secret backdoors, once it’s locked, it’s locked. The timer can be set in one-minute increments for up to 10 days.
Our mission is to spread the word: Medible safety is user responsibility. In an effort to dispel any negative perception of edibles, we reached out to The Kitchen Safe, a product seen in late November 2014 on Shark Tank, Season 6: Episode 10. The Kitchen Safe is the world’s first time-lock
The Kitchen Safe has been so successful, they are producing a next generation product called kSafe, that is operated by a phone app. In March of this year, less than three days after launching their Kickstarter campaign for kSafe, they cruised past their $50,000 goal with 450 backers. A research proven system that turns temptation into motivation, kSafe empowers people by helping them to achieve goals that they may have previously struggled to complete. Connected via the kSafe app, its personal enhancement abilities are endless and can be applied to a variety of everyday situations. Constructed with high quality materials and available in white opaque, black opaque and white translucent, kSafe can hold TV remotes, games controllers and tablets as well as heaps of snacks. Controlled through Bluetooth and a low energy electronic lock, there are absolutely no overrides.

container designed to help people avoid junk food and other temptations. Simply place an item in the Kitchen Safe, close the lid, and set
While there are obviously many creative uses for The Kitchen Safe, the reason we are standing behind this product and promoting it is to spread awareness about edible safety. Lock up your edibles, whether that’s in a Kitchen Safe or any other lockbox stored away from children and dogs. As this movement is being dubbed Prohibition 2.0, we can liken cannabis to alcohol in the sense that you wouldn’t leave bottles of liquor out for a child or dog to get into. In order for our country to fully accept the legalization of marijuana we must act together to rebrand cannabis collectively. Let’s be adults and medicate responsibility, which includes being accountable for your edibles.
We started Edibles Magazine with the intent to put knowledge, news, information and the laws out there for our readers. We always hear news about children being hospitalized because of cannabis infused edibles, but we never hear about how low that number is compared to all the other reasons children and pets go to the emergency room. The truth is, regardless of state regulation for edible packaging, if a patient or recreational user leaves an edible out of its original childproof package, they are at fault if their child or dog inadvertently consumes it.

TEXAS TO
LEGALIZE MARIJUANA? CHACE DACY STAFF EDITOR
Texas State Representative, David Simpson (R), introduced a bill to decriminalize marijuana in the state. His bill will join 25 other cannabis bills currently filed this session. The 24-page bill, H.B. 2165, removes all mentions of marijuana in Texas law and would end prohibition of the plant in the state and view it as a traditional crop. This bill is vastly different from legislation passed in other states where marijuana is currently legal. In those states, regulation and taxation has been strictly controlled, and in most, sales is monitored from seed all the way to final purchase. Simpson admits that he knows there is little chance of this bill actually passing but hopes this will help to begin marijuana reform in Texas. Simpson sites religious views as part of the reason for proposing the legislation. “I don’t believe that when God made marijuana he made a mistake that the government needs to fix,” Simpson said in an op-ed (short for “opposite the editorial page” aka opinion piece) for The Texas Tribune. According to his op-ed, Simpson is “especially cautious” to make laws banning plants, the marijuana plant being one of them.
Simpson points out that the United States’ attempt at the prohibition of alcohol only lasted from 1920 to 1933, which is a reason as to why he believes marijuana should be legalized. Simpson also notes that that prohibition of alcohol brought about an increase in organized crime and government corruption and emphatically believes that the illegality of marijuana is doing much of the same. “Our current ‘war on drugs’ policies…[have led to] a proliferation of ever-changing exotic designer drugs and a disregard for constitutional protections in the name of eliminating drugs at any cost,” Simpson wrote in his op-ed. According to the op-ed, Simpson wants to encourage a discussion about the “impact of prohibition enforcement on constitutionally protected liberties.” However, in an interview with the Houston Chronicle, Gary Hale, a former intelligence chief of the Drug Intelligence Agency, said that Simpson’s bill will probably not pass as it currently reads. “A blanket decriminalization of marijuana and a classification as a vegetable is not going to happen,” Hale said. “Overall legalization will not happen, but in my opinion, it will happen in incremental baby steps.”

New York to Tighten Up
OM EDIBLES
TM
MMJ Laws
NATHAN FOISY STAFF EDITOR Last summer, New York lawmakers proposed legalizing the use of medical marijuana with intensive and restrictive regulations. The Health Department is now nearing final guideline decisions that may indicate the fruition of supporter’s concerns. The law states that only patients afflicted with at least one of ten predetermined conditions will be permissible to obtain cannabis for medical use. Unfortunately, the final regulations are not including new conditions, such as PTSD. At this time, it is unclear as to how many patients will be allowed to register for legal use, ranging from thousands to hundreds of thousands. These restrictive regulations are concerning to Assemblyman Richard N. Gottfried, the law’s sponsor, who voiced his unease to the Times, “There are people from very, very young children to very elderly New Yorkers who are going to continue to suffer unnecessarily.” Initially, the state will only allow five, licensed, non-profit groups to produce, sell and operate a total of twenty dispensaries statewide. The prices will be dictated by the Department of Health Commissioner, Dr. Howard A. Zucker - not the market - which concerns many potential patients that high costs will be prohibitive in accessing the medicine they need. The regulations have prohibited sale of the whole plant and inhalation of the plant; thus, meaning only costly extracts and other consumables will be allowed for use. Additionally, producers will only be permitted to cultivate five strains of cannabis, of the DOH’s choosing, and will not be permitted to use strain names that may parallel ‘street names’. The obvious and vexing issue with all these restrictions and regulations is that New York seems to be substantially behind the times. The medical marijuana market is not a new concept, over 20 states have already legalized cannabis, and it has been medically legal in California for nearly two decades. It seems as though New York is taking extreme caution as they witness other states still navigating their own marijuana reforms and regulations. Gabriel Sayegh of the Drug Policy Alliance rightfully commented, “If we were having this discussion in 1998, one would understand the extreme caution. But it’s not the late 1990s, it’s 2015.” 16
B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Om Edibles is a San Francisco based company, founded in 2006, by a badass stoner chick, with a long-term affair with cannabis. Maya, creator of Om Edibles says, “It [cannabis] always brought so much joy to my life.” Two years after dispensaries started opening their doors, Maya became a medicated barista, aka “budtender,” at an underground shop on Polk & Sutter. It was her first time making a living with cannabis, and with a degree in Psychology; she became an enthusiast, connoisseur and educator of marijuana. It was at that time Maya’s first product was created, frozen medicated cookie dough that patients could take-and-bake at home and have freshly made edibles anytime they wanted them, without the hassle of going to a dispensary. Not very long into the shop’s existence, and in an all too familiar fashion, the Federal government shut it down. [Coincidentally, the landlord of that shop is my close friend and web design client, but it took a decade and Instagram for the universe to formally introduce us to Maya.]
Maya openly expresses her love, knowledge and gratitude for the herb, while sharing how to use and enjoy cannabis as a part of a healthy lifestyle on a daily basis with her patients. In addition to the Peanut Butter Truffle and Lion Balm, they offer an array of tinctures, bath salts, olive oil, coconut oil and a hard candy line as well their peanut butter cups (that are absolutely amazing). The Liquid OG Kush tincture is everything you love about Kush. All of Om’s products are made from whole bud plant extract, as Maya believes it is the vendor’s responsibility as a medicine provider to only distribute the most natural ingredients possible, especially when dealing with patients with compromised immune systems. Additionally, they offer CBD tinctures as well as CBD coconut oil, which are also made from a whole bud plant extract, allowing the use of the entire spectrum of cannabinoids. Maya believes in using additional herbs like lavender and chamomile to enhance the healing effects of her tinctures. Maya explains that , “[her product] should be used as a vitamin supplement or super food.” The Epsom salts won 2nd Place at the 2015 SoCal Cannabis Cup in San Bernardino. To successfully creae this product, Om combines the healing effects of marijuana with hydrotherapy.
Despite the collective’s unfortunate fate, Maya continued to forge ahead with her cannabis infusions. Her next hit product was a topical she still carries today, “Lion Balm,” great for any kind of physical pain from cuts, scrapes, bruises, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, menstrual pain and more. Ahead of her time in the cannabis industry, she knew that being able to medicate without “getting high” was key to re-branding marijuana in the public eye.
Using a proprietary blend of cannabis and herbs, the medicated bath is an intoxicating experience, for the entire body. The bath helps the body heal itself, as the herbs are absorbed through both the skin’s pores as well as the colon. It also helps with anxiety, depression and any dermatological issues.
Maya and her team at Om Edibles have become extremely passionate about helping people with healthy edibles. They use only organic high quality ingredients for their edibles and topicals. In 2011, her Peanut Butter Truffle won Best Edible at the San Francisco High Times Cannabis Cup.
Beyond the plant as a medicine, Maya testifies that cannabis brings us together as a part of a collective consciousness, allowing us to forget about our negative stressors, and selfmedicate.
The Om Edibles Mission: Stay true to integrity and be passionate about being compassionate.
The bath salts are made from a whole plant extract
Maya expressed her feeling about how cannabis affected her life, “In this chaotic environment we live in, I honestly believe that cannabis makes me a better person.” 17
B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Mission: Helping Veterans heal through cannabis fellowship with other like minded Veterans and community projects. Kevin, the founder of Weed 4 Warriors Project, was a Special Ops certified Soldier in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the first infantry unit deployed in Operation Freedom. He spent his first eight and a half months of deployment working at terrorist training camps in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Africa. After four years active duty and four years in the reserves, Kevin went directly from the military to government contracting; thus, leaving him no break to take a breath of fresh air and putting him in a mental state that in his own words, “almost killed me.” As a result of being in the US military, Kevin began showing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) and was afraid it was going to prevent him from continuing his career. He left the military 40% disabled, and he says, “I didn’t want anything to do with the military VA.” It was not long after his discharge from the Marines that he started to lose feeling in his legs. He began drinking heavily and using prescription painkillers. Kevin’s doctors hospitalized him officially diagnosing him with severe PTSD. Additionally, diagnosed with a mild brain injury suffered from head trauma due to use of, USMC martial arts, in both training and combat; in addition to, “taking one to many punches to the head” while professionally fighting after leaving the military. “I was looking for an outlet to release all the aggression, ” Kevin said. A life built around anger and hate, left him in a desperate position where he attempted suicide on multiple occasions. One of his fellow veterans who had 50% of his intestines removed due to Crohn’s disease - developed from anthrax shots - suggested using cannabis instead of the psyche medications, after Kevin’s last suicide attempt. He was always aware of the medical use of cannabis, but being from a disciplined background with strict rules and high-andtight haircuts, he was sure to conduct his own research before treating himself with cannabis. Within six months, Kevin stopped 18
drinking alcohol and weaned himself off all of his prescribed psychiatric medication. In short, his life began to improve with cannabis. His first experience with edibles is a cautionary tale. A friend gave him some THC capsules and 180mg cookies, and without having any clue what a standard dose is to someone who has never really ingested marijuana before, he consumed them. “I took the caps and the cookie at the same time. It was the worst trip ever. My only knowledge of cannabis was smoking blunts and drinkin 40s in high school,” Kevin said. Kevin’s first unpleasant experience with cannabis infused edibles did not deter him in any way. Through additional personal research, Kevin learned about ‘microdosing,’ which is something the Weed 4 Warriors Project highly promotes - starting low and going slow. The key thing for new edible consumers to remember is that you can always eat more, but you cannot eat less. One day, not long into Kevin’s new love affair with cannabis, a collective in San Francisco, Elemental Wellness, hosted an Air Force Iraqi Freedom Veterans group. Inspired by the dispensary’s effort, Kevin came up with the concept of helping Veterans with cannabis. W4WP began as advocacy at first, putting out free artwork for veterans and getting information and knowledge to the general public and cannabis community. It quickly grew into much more than spreading cannabis awareness to Veterans; it became a platform for Veterans to create an alliance, helping and connecting fellow Veterans, allowing them to gain back the camaraderie lost after leaving the military. “When you’re on the battlefield, you fight for your sisters and brothers left and right of you. My wife didn’t understand me. Your family doesn’t understand you. When you get Veterans back together, you get the camaraderie you build with each other, which left the biggest hole in my heart after leaving the Marines. They’ve found that when football players retire, there is a void left in the brain without their team. Our mission to is to help Veterans and give them the camaraderie with their brothers and sisters. I used to think, I’m the only one out there thinking these crazy thoughts,” Kevin said. Due to the negative stigma still associated
with cannabis, most veterans that are cannabis patients are closet smokers, out of fear of repercussions from the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs (commonly known as the VA) or public opinion. These fears and judgments make it extremely difficult to get Vets the help they rightfully deserve. Many Veterans with disabilities leaving the military are treated with free pharmaceuticals, which often times worsens their quality of life. According to Kevin, “Eighty percent of the psyche meds are making things worse.” He explains “[sometimes] I’ll be at the VA talking about cannabis, and no one will say anything during the group, but afterward they’ll approach me privately and say, ‘I smoke too,’ and share how cannabis has helped them. But they still don’t want to be public about it.” “It started with social media and just putting myself out there. Then I got hit up by Denver, and connected with some people out there”. To help another Army Vet brought him to tears, “that love is never going to die, before our movement these Veterans had nothing to fight for, it’s always been in them, but it’s caused such a great impact,” Kevin said.
advocacy groups for marijuana legalization. Currently, the organization is working to expand their network and are in the beginning stages of opening a Resource Center for Veterans, where they can receive free counseling, free medicine, take classes on cannabis, and participate in camps. They want to create a retreat, where Veterans and their families can go to get help through cognitive therapy and activities like medicated paintball wars and hiking. Additionally, as part of the W4WP’s five year plan, they will create a ‘grow squad’. Essentially, they will supply Veterans with genetics clones, so they can grow their own medicine, at their own homes, and then donate part of that medicine to help more Veterans. The Weed 4 Warriors Project, currently has six chapters in California including; Los Angeles, Sacramento, Ventura County, San Diego, and San Jose - beginning May 3rd and more to come soon. They have
additional chapters in Colorado, Arizona, and Washington/Oregon. W4WP is not exclusive to US Veterans, in fact, an Australian Veteran is working to establish chapters ‘down under’. If you are interested in starting a chapter, reach out to W4WP on their contact page at www.Weed4WarriorsProject.org. They are selective in who they allow to run a chapter as it is extremely important they know your heart is in the right place. The leader of the chapter is responsible for finding a location to hold meetings, working to help Veterans in the local areas, empowering other Veterans with the mission to give back to the community. They support all Veteran organizations, whether or not they relate to cannabis as the goal is to help Veterans in any capacity. If you are a vendor or donor, and would like to contribute to the Weed 4 Warriors Project, please email them directly at weed4warriorsproject@gmail.com. They seek to form strategic alliances, working alongside different companies, connecting patients with vendors. Currently, they are
working with vendors like MIss Mary Jane’s Edibles, Shatter Stick Vapor and Cali Sticks. Ultimately the goal is to get cannabis legalized whilst assisting veterans. All services are free to Veterans, as the organization is not i to profit off the Vets. The only all they ask for is proof of military service. If you are a Vet in need of assistance with medicine or are struggling with suicide or PTSD, please call the W4WP Hotline (408.681.9497). They are there to help you. Through Kevin’s personal experience with cannabis helping to save his life, he preaches that cannabis is a tool, not a cure. “I’m proud to be a Marine and a Veteran, and I’m proud to be in control of my life with cannabis. Everyday I look at my children and think about it and think that I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for cannabis. That story is popping up time and at a time again with Veterans. It’s emotional but empowering at the same time. For us, it’s fuel to our fire; our passion.” W4WP Hotline: 408.681.W4WP www.Weed4WarriorsProject.org
Having lost several of his Veteran friends to suicide, it is his passion to help keep that from continuing. Kevin says, “We are losing more than 22 veterans a day (that’s only monitored in 21 states). Veterans account for 7% of the nation’s population, and 20% of the nation’s suicide. That’s a scary thing, if you really think about it. W4WP allows an outlet, instead of locking yourself in a room and hiding, afraid of what we may do in public. Living in a warrior mindset for so long makes you shut out the world. There are a lot of Veterans out there that if it wasn’t for our organization they wouldn’t be here right now.” In an effort to help end US Veteran suicides, Weed 4 Warriors Project operates a hotline [408.681.W4WP], that anyone can reach out to, for any reason. Kevin explained that on several occasions he has personally talked people out of suicide. He testifies his gratitude for being able to personally help Veterans with cannabis. Weed 4 Warriors Project is currently in phase II, which is setting up Veteran support groups across the nation. They will make donations and create chapters in the legal states, and in non-legal states they will form

KYMBER WARD STAFF EDITOR Miss Mary Jane’s Edibles is a force to be reckoned within the California medical marijuana industry. Their story begins with personal need and a desire to benefit those around them. Mr. & Miss Mary Jane met while Mr. Mary Jane was working alongside the brave men and women in the US Military as a private security contractor. Upon finishing his assignment, he struggled with the same issues many of our Veterans face upon returning home after battle and he turned to cannabis. Cannabis allowed him the opportunity to have a normal life after battle. Although they were passionate marijuana advocates, they did not enter the industry until Miss Mary Jane’s mother-in-law, was diagnosed with advanced thyroid cancer. Miss Mary Jane baked her first batch of medicated Brownie Brittle for her mother-inlaw on the first day of her treatment and with that, the idea of Miss Mary Jane’s Edibles was born. After four months of research, development and rigorous lab testing through SC Labs, Miss Mary Jane’s Edibles went to market in October 2014. According to Miss Mary Jane, their company “strives to be an honest edibles company that also gives back to the community.” They pride themselves on the being an ‘honest’ edible company; in fact, they run their business using a simple set of guidelines: Hardwork, Honesty & Humility. They believe it is not only the job of edible companies to provide, safe, consistent and lab-tested medicine for patients, but to help educate along the way. In five short months, Miss Mary Jane has gained quite the following and was even voted #3 in OC Weed Review’s Top 5 Edibles of 2014. They are directly involved with Weed 4 Warriors Project, an organization that provides Veterans with medical marijuana information, a safe place to fellowship with other Veterans and safe access to free medicine with proof of service. “Our patients are what drives us. We love hearing from our patients, especially Veterans, who tell us how much our edibles are benefiting their
MISS MARY JANE’S
lives. Those stories are what compel us to do this each and every day,” explained Miss Mary Jane. Upon meeting Mr. & Miss MJ, it is extremely apparent that they are in it for the patients, not the financial gain. Miss Mary Jane may be a new player in the marijuana industry, but is no stranger to the kitchen. She has been baking since being trained by her grandmother at a young age and founded her own mainstream baking business, catering events throughout Southern California. Miss Mary Jane’s Edibles offers a full line of gourmet baked goods that are some of the most exquisite looking (and tasting) edibles around. Living up to their beauty, they are equally as potent, with all of their edibles containing no less than 60mg active cannibinoids, made from the highest quality marijuana. Their menu currently consists of cake pops & truffles, whoopie pies, brownie bites and baked brittle - each edible containing the perfect mix of potency and rich flavor. My personal favorite is their Chocolate Turtle Cake Pop (120mg). It was not only amazingly scrumptious, but it was the perfect size and I did not need to eat copious amounts of product (aka calories) to feel the desired effect. However with that being said, they have just launched their 4-pack brownie bites sampler and let me tell ya, they are like tiny pieces of heaven. The decedent, little creations come in four mouth-watering flavors: cookies & cream, salted caramel, peanut butter cups and double chocolate. Each brownie bite contains 60mg. In the edibles industry, it is difficult to set yourself apart from the competition. Miss Mary Jane’s Edibles is not worried about competition. In fact, they have a refreshing approach on being a competitor in this industry. Mr. & Miss Mary recognize that there are other companies with excellent product and feel that it is much better to work together rather than against one another. “When I am dropping off to dispensaries I always like to tell them about other ‘honest’ edible companies we believe in. We have received tons of guidance from others in
the industry and we feel it is important to keep the grass roots alive” Mr. MJ said. The wild, wild, west of marijuana that is California will drastically change come 2016. Miss MJ explained, where they hope to see the industry and their company in five years, “We absolutely want to see it (California) go legal for recreational use and we are gearing up for that – assuming California will go the same route as Colorado. We are in it for the long haul and are already developing our packaging and setting systems into place that will allow us to succeed when regulations are put into place. It is going to change the game.” Their main focus is on the end user, they want to create and experience for the patient from the moment they see the product at the dispensary, to opening the box, to actually consuming the product. They understand there is a difference between medicating and enjoying it, “just because it’s medicine doesn’t mean it has to taste terrible,” proclaimed Ms. MJ. MMJE promotes edible safety and encourages patients to medicate responsibly. They encourage their patients to always keep their product away from children and pets, “keep it under lock and key and out of reach of children just as if you would with a regular medication.” Mr. MJ explains it simply, “You can always eat more, start off at low dose and work your way up. At this point, dispensaries shouldn’t be offering edibles without proper testing results and patients need to be educated.” Miss Mary Jane’s entered the market impart due to the fact, they did not see anything like their product on the market. They may be new in the industry but they are a company to watch. They bring a level of professionalism and sophistication into an industry that is severely lacking those qualities. Their edibles are delicious, potent and absolutely stunning. All of us at Edibles List expect to see great things from Miss Mary Jane’s Edibles in the future and encourage our fans in California to check them out if they are looking for high quality, high end, edibles. 21

GEORGIA PREPARES
PUBLICLY TRADED COMPANIES FACING DANGERS Two of the suspensions were apparently based on additional illegal activity including unlawful activity and manipulation. Whether the grounds for these accusations are factual or not, the increased speculation is a clear reaction to the booming marijuana market.
FOR NEW MEDICAL MARIJUANA LAW forced to relocate to Colorado and other states as medical cannabis refugees, just to receive the treatment, but are now seeing a bright light of hope as their own states are legalizing the use of medicinal marijuana.
NATHAN FOISY STAFF EDITOR After heartfelt pleas from families with children afflicted with severe medical conditions such as debilitating epilepsy, to the Capitol last month, Georgia has approved the bill to enact the possession and use of medical marijuana for those with medicinal necessities. All that’s left is for Gov. Nathan Deal to sign the bill, which he says he plans to. The nearly across-the-board support for the passing of the bill has those in need very optimistic for the future of continued medical support using cannabis. The bill will allow the use of cannabis oil to treat the diseases that have shown results otherwise unseen before implementation. In past years, many families have been
24
This will allow Georgia residents to travel to those states that legally produce and sell whole plant CBD oil and return with it to their own state without legal consequence. Of course, the planning of implementing cultivation within Georgia will be the next step in the process. Though Georgia patients will still see difficulties cultivating and possessing medical cannabis oil within state lines, until further reforms are made, the residents seem to be hopeful that they will be about to obtain their medicine without fear of prosecution. With the bill signed, qualifying patients will be able to receive cards from the state that will allow the use of cannabis oil containing no more than five percent of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Possibly helping over 500,000 Georgians, the bill covers eight conditions so far, and will hopefully be extended to treat those of even more illnesses. Parent Corey Lowe and many other families are attending “Cannabis Oil 101,” an informative session on the new cannabis laws and cultivation trials. Lowe mentioned, “Next session we’re going to be back at the Capitol full force fighting for cultivation, and adding fibromyalgia, PTSD and autism hopefully.”
NATHAN FOISY STAFF EDITOR The most common misconception about cannabis in the stock market is that the current publically traded companies and are typically ancillary or hemp based companies, not actual THC companies that are involved in the production or sale of marijuana. As long as marijuana remains scheduled as is, any company directly profiting off of the sale or production of cannabis canot be publicaly traded. The Securities and Exchange Commission has recently closed trading with numerous publicly traded marijuana companies due to insufficient information sharing and company infidelity issues. Some of these companies include Cannabusiness Group, Inc., GrowLife, Inc., FusionFarm, Inc., and Advanced Cannabis Solutions, Inc. This suspension of public trade came with an issued warning – or Investor Alert – that urged investors to be cautious of newly acquired trade with marijuana companies.
The mindset of the pot explosion was that the marijuana industry as a whole would be a large cash crop; therefore, every individual cannabis business must yield the same bountiful reward. With all the new companies and legalization laws, government agencies are bound to be circling closely nearby, eagerly watching for opportunities to strike down “unlawful” activities and practices. In 2013, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority remarked the industry to include several “instances of firms being run by people with criminal records.” Happenings such as these only perpetuate the stereotype of the cannabis industry being less than legal and crime ridden. It is important that as the industry matures it will weed out the ‘bad eggs’ and allow for the true professionals to shine through. As with any industry it is important to be aware and understand all facets of a company you are looking to invest in. Unfortunately, due to some companies executing poor business practices, skepticism is building not only with the private sector but with the SEC which could ultimately hinder the growth of the industry. Cannabis companies should not be discouraged from pursuing public trade (if they do not directly profit from marijuana), but should certainly be more aware of practices and that this industry is already under the spotlight and will remain there until being federally legalized.

EDIBLES SAFETY:
Mold-Free Baked Goods
How To Keep Yeast and Mold Out Of Your Medibles RACHEL ZEMSER STAFF EDITOR The most common marijuana infused food products are typically baked goods-items like cookies, brownies and cakes. These are considered to be fairly safe items because they are baked to a very dry state and usually have high amounts of sugar. A dry high sugar environment is not ideal for yeast and mold growth. If your baked good is not dry enough, or it doesn’t have enough sugar—or it has some high moisture inclusions like fruit or jam, your product may all of a sudden be a happy growth medium for spoilage bacteria. In food science, the term “moisture” refers to how much water is in a food product, but “water activity” (aw) is used to describe the amount of available or “free” water in a food product or its environment. The free water is what microorganisms can access to grow and thrive in a food system. The aw of pure water is 1.00; the aw of a completely dehydrated food is 0.00. The aw can be manipulated and lowered in foods by adding solutes such as salt or sugar, physically removing water through drying or baking, or binding water to various components in the food like fiber, sugar or starch. It is difficult to know exactly which combination of ingredients will give you a finished food product that does not support spoilage bacteria growth. You could just take a chance- make your baked good, wrap it up and sell it around town but a better way to ensure a clean mold free product is to have a simple water activity (aw) test performed on your product. Any food-testing lab can do this. You want your aw to be around the 0.65 to 0.7 range—the lower the aw the longer your product will remain yeast and mold free. Follow this path to ensure shelf stability of your baked good product: Create and document your recipe in grams, keep track of your oven time and temperature, this will ensure consistency in the long run. Take your finished good to a local food lab and ask them to test the aw. It should be less than 0.70. Test every baked good batch for a few months till you feel secure that your process and cook time are giving you consistent results. The aw of your baked good can be used as a quality control measure to help ensure that your baked good will last longer on the shelf. You should package it in a sealed foil package that will keep out moisture, air and light. A shelf life study should be done on your product before selling it to the masses. The aw unit can be purchased from Decagon (aqualab.com), the only U.S. manufacturer of Water Activity equipment. A handheld unit will cost about $2,000. DISCREET CAPS
The validity of cannabis as alternative medicine, with the backing of more and more doctors and scientists, is being proven everyday. Unlike opiate-based painkillers, cannabis has been proven to not be physiologically addictive.
B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
While some people still prefer to medicate by smoking, there is a growing demand for smokeless alternatives as there are a number of people in need of the relief cannabis provides but cannot or do not want to smoke as their delivery method. Consuming tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) via ingestion is a much more regimented form of medicine.
As the marijuana industry expands, the demand for smokeless alternatives will only continue to grow. Ten out of ten doctors will recommend edibles over smoking marijuana. The main downside of most edibles is the fact that you have to consume so many calories to achieve the desired effect. Discreet Caps, strain specific cannabis capsules are new to the California medical marijuana market, providing targeted relief for both day and night.
Sativa Capsules: Symptom Relief: Depression, ADD, fatigue, mood disorders Ingredients: High grade cannabis, organic coconut oil, vegan gelatin capsule Dosage: Take one capsule, wait 45-60 minutes before increasing dosage. Best taken with food and plenty of water. Effects: Tend to be uplifting and creative with cerebrally focused effects
Each capsule is 30mg, and are offered in 6 and 12 capsule jars, in either Indica or Sativa. Optimal for discrete medicating, these medicinal capsules are not only inconspicuous, they have zero calories, zero total fat, zero saturated fat, zero trans fat, zero sodium, zero sugar and are 100% organic, vegan, gluten-free and Kosher.
Indica Capsules: Symptom Relief: Anxiety, insomnia, pain, muscle spasms Ingredients: High grade cannabis, organic coconut oil, vegan gelatin capsule Dosage: Take one capsule, wait 45-60 minutes before increasing dosage. Best taken with food and plenty of water. Effects: Tend to be sedating and relaxing with full-body effects

CBD REFUGEES:
FLORIDA’S CHARLOTTE’S WEB CHACE DAVY STAFF EDITOR Renee Petro’s son, Brandon, has been living with epilepsy for most of his 13-year-old life. He has seizures nearly every day, and according to a Tampa Bay Times article, Renee is terrified by every seizure he has. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder, which causes those affected to have seizures. It affects approximately 3 million Americans, and currently has no official medical cure. There have been few official studies done regarding cannabis and helping control epileptic seizures. However, there are several reports that medical marijuana, specifically strains high in CBD and low in THC can help curb epileptic seizures. According to a TIME article, Charlotte’s Web--which is low in the psychoactive component THC, which gets users “high” and high in cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound that possesses significant medical benefits- is “believed to reduce seizures in those suffering from certain forms of epilepsy.” Florida legislature passed a bill last year making the “Charlotte’s Web” strain legal. It’s use, on the other hand, remains a political debate, meaning that Renee Petro is still unable to use it to help her son. According to the Tampa Bay Times article,
Brandon Petro has been well served by medical marijuana in a controlled atmosphere. “They flew to California, where medical marijuana is legal. Brandon began treatment under a doctor’s supervision,” the article reads. “Renee said he went seizure-free for the three week trial. She said his mood seemed to improve.” There is certainly a lot of anecdotal evidence showing that Charlotte’s Web could be useful in helping control epileptic seizures, but Dr. Selim Benbadis, director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at University of South Florida and Tampa General Hospital, warns that people should be cautious before diving headfirst into any kind of treatment with the strain. “We need clinical trials,” Benbadis said in the Tampa Bay Times article. “There are also people who do not respond, but you don’t hear about any of them in news stories.” However, what Benbadis fails to take into consideration is that publically funded clinical trials will not happen until marijuana is rescheduled and many of these parents are faced with dire situations. They have exhausted all other avenues and are left without a choice but to hope cannabis provides a relief pharmaceuticals have failed to provide. There are so many patients that are desperate for the help of cannabis and are unable to get the medicine they need due to antiquated legislation and reform. It is only a matter of time until patients will be able to use their medicine freely without fear.
edibles safety:
3 Tips On How To Eat Marijuana Edibles JOSEPH WINKE STAFF EDITOR Eating can be a great delivery mechanism for the sacred marijuana herb. Not only does it avoid the lungs altogether (unlike smoking and vaporizing), it allows for consistent dosing and is very discreet. When cannabis is inhaled, the body metabolizes THC through the lungs and you experience an euphoric “high” feeling almost immediately. Edibles instead utilize the liver, which provides a much different experience and requires a different dosing curve. Smoking brings a quick onset of the psychological effects followed by a steady and linear decrease in effect, typically lasting 1-2 hours, which on a graph would look much like an upside down checkmark. Eating cannabis is a longer process with a slower onset, much like a gentle, sloping hill. Onset is slower, taking 30-60 minutes (compared to 30-60 seconds with smoking) and the effects typically lasts 4-6 hours. Your mileage will vary of course, depending on the strain, cannabinoid profile and quantity ingested. One of the great things about smoking’s quick onset time is that it functions as a regulator, making it difficult to overdo it. [Note: Nobody has ever died from consuming too much cannabis at once, or “overdosing,” but taking too much can be psychologically upsetting.] THC hits the brain so quickly, by the time you can pack another bowl you’ll start to realize the effect of your last hit. This isn’t to say you can’t overdo it –– joints make it notoriously easy to take rapidfire hits –– but when it does happen the adverse effects are usually not at the same scale as with edibles. Edibles are a completely different game. As edible manufacturers pack more and more THC into each gram of food, eating even a small medicated chocolate bar, brownie, or breathmint, can result in an overwhelming experience. There are numerous anecdotal reports of people who’ve eaten too much cannabis freaking out. For example, the police officer who confiscated marijuana from suspects, baked some special brownies for his wife and himself, then feared for his life and called 9-11. Let’s avoid incidents like that.
34
Consuming alcohol is an apt, yet imperfect, analogy: Smoking weed is like taking a sip of
beer. As you drink more, you feel the beer’s effects and you can gauge the amount of alcohol you’re taking in. Short of binge drinking with a funnel, it’s hard to really ‘overdose.’ The same can’t be said of liquor. Line up tequila shots and you can down the fifth shot before your body realizes what a bad idea that was. (Don’t worry, it will remind you in the morning.) Most people don’t have a mental model of what an appropriate dose of edible marijuana is. If they take a couple hits from a pipe or joint, they can then see how they feel. But in edibles, where the dose is disguised with other ingredients, they have no concept of how much marijuana was consumed or which and how many cannabinoids are affecting their brain. Due to the government’s criminalizing and demonizing of all cannabis use – i.e. the war on drugs – realistic cannabis education is lacking. Very few people clearly understand strains, concentrations, dosages or quantities. By patient demand in medical cannabis states – and by government mandate in places like Colorado where cannabis is legal – many cannabis dispensaries are now testing their products and providing strain descriptions and cannabinoid labeling to show the CBD and THC mg counts. However, due to lack of regulation in places like California, many dispensaries do not include this information on labeling. In this case, it’s like going to a bar where the bartender hands you a pint of a mystery liquid. It tastes great, but you don’t know if it’s a beer, wine or liquor. This is what happened when Maureen Dowd ate an edible candy bar in a Denver, Colorado hotel room. She ate a whole bar in one sitting that was meant to be divided into 16 doses. In our analogy, she thought she was drinking a beer, but instead downed a bottle of tequila. There is no need for this to happen. These steps on how to eat a marijuana edible are intended to help you avoid a negative cannabis experience:
1. Pay attention to set and setting: Don’t have unrealistic expectations for your first time with an edible. Many people obtain edibles and immediately want to use them recreationally, or to medicate. This is a very risky proposition as the edibles market is very disparate in its dosing and concentration. Bring an expectation of discovery to your first time with any new marijuana edible. You won’t know how it affects your body until you try it. Make sure your environment and mental
space is set up for a relaxing time, and that you’re in a safe place. It’s also a good idea not to try any new edibles alone. We have to calibrate before we can celebrate.
2. Calibrate, start small and wait: This is not the time for bravado. Most edibles now are labeled with their THC content (avoid edibles which do not list their THC content). Do some mental math and divide the edible up so that you have about 10mg per dose, based on the edible’s total THC. If it’s a 40mg edible, break off a quarter. Ingest this much, and wait at least a solid hour to see what its effects are like. It can take up to three hours for an edible to fully metabolize, so one hour is really a minimum wait time. How do you feel? If you don’t feel anything after your full hour, wait at least an additional 30 minutes. Then, eat an additional half of what you just had. If you initially ate a quarter of that 40mg edible, break off another quarter and bite that in half. Wait again another 90 minutes. Repeat until you find a dose that works for you. Why not eat another quarter? This has to do how our body metabolizes substances, especially orally. A lot of the active ingredients are ‘used up’ building up a base level of the substance in the body. Think of water boiling: it takes a lot of energy to get it to the boiling point, and then once it’s there it doesn’t’ take much to sustain the reaction. This is true of the psychological ‘euphoric’ state as well. If you don’t ‘feel anything’ on your first dose, a lot of the THC is ‘warming up’ your body to the new state. You might just need to ‘raise the temperature’ a few more degrees. What you want to do is find the exact right amount to start things out, without boiling over.
3. Go pro: Invest in a scale. ‘Break off a quarter’ sounds like great instruction until the cookie literally crumbles. This has happened to me, which makes it really hard to figure out how much is enough. Even I have ended up overdoing it a few times. The solution here is to a get a scale accurate to a tenth of a gram, so that you can measure how much you are taking. You can find one online for less than $25. If you’re serious at all about responsibly modulating your consciousness, a scale is a fantastic investment. This really is the best way to find your edibles “edge” and be able to reliably go back there, time and time again. In fact, the scale will pay for itself rather quickly as you’ll consume less medicine. 35

B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
The One. The Only. The Original.
Many may imitate, but there is only one EdiPure. They are the original and largest infused gummy candy maker. It all began with the first medical license issued in Colorado in 2009. Since then, they have exploded on the market, currently spanning California, Colorado and Washington. EdiPure’s original line offers, sour gummies, peach rings, rainbow belts, raspberry jellies, red fish, sour lemon drops, sour apple drops, sour gummy bears, sour worms, watermelon tarts, cherry bombs, banana chips, dried pineapple, dried apricot, mixed nuts clusters, and the list goes on. They say they started with gummy candy, because they’re actually preferred by adults, and perfect for easy precision dosing. Staying ahead of the curve, EdiPure is launching a new, gourmet and Kosher product line that includes candied almonds, peanut brittle, gourmet licorice, candied nuts and more. EdiPure teamed up with a national candy maker in order to expand and perfect their edible portfolio. EdiPure also has a new CBD line, made from whole bud plant extract, not hemp-based CBD oil, sourced from China with unknown origins and potential contaminants. They are currently working on a disposable vaporizer line as well.
Colorado’s preferred cannabis infused edible, would like to Thank You, the loyal follower by celebrating its 6th 4/20 Holiday.

EDIPURE
EdiPure has always been a brand that complies with regulations pre-emptively. They anticipate that when cannabis becomes recreationally legal in 2016 for California, only the bigger businesses with financial backing will be able to obtain the licenses the state will offer. While they’ve been scrutinized for “targeting children” by infusing candy, no children were actually reported to have been dosed with infused candy for Halloween, and studies have shown that chocolate is actually more preferable to children than gummy candy. They are one of the largest recreational infusion brands in Colorado, and are on the board of the Colorado Chamber of Commerce. An infusion license was just issued to EdiPure in San Jose, the only city in California to begin issuing edible licenses. There, they will begin the construction of their Co2 processing plant and new California headquarters. Additionally, they are currently building their own facility in Chicago and Nevada as they have obtained both dispensary and infusion licenses in those cities as well. Next on the map for EdiPure is New York, which might be a struggle with their tightening medical marijuana restrictions. One day, in the not-so-far off future, should expect to see EdiPure in every state.

THAISTICK VAPORIZERS
SID D H I BHANG INFUSIONS
JAMES SHEATHER STAFF EDITOR Following the recent consumer demand, there has been a proliferation of vaporizer pens and attachments aimed at streamlining the process of consuming smokeless concentrates. The ThaiStick Vaporizer Pen and Refill Cartridge products aim to satisfy a desire for the highest quality vaporizer concentrate possible with current technology. The Oregon-based company Xtractix, manufactures the liquid for ThaiStick in a state of the art facility that ensures the product is never heated past 85°F and never comes into contact with anything but stainless steel, ensuring a pure and high end product making it ideal for medical consumers. The ThaiStick lineup includes both a disposable and reusable vapor pen, refill cartomizers preloaded with a gram of oil, and an applicator of liquid concentrate for those who would rather refill their own cartomizers – the device that is screwed on to the battery supply to deliver e-juice through a vape pen. Patients can choose between sativa, indica, or hybrid concentrates that are offered in a wide range of flavors from bubblegum to watermelon. The infusions produced by ThaiStick run at 80% THC, O.2% CBD, and 0.5% CBN and the effect upon use is immediate. The full flavored Original reveals the purity of the concentrate in its unflavored form, where you can taste the full range of terpenes that are preserved in the production process, which uses only laboratory grade N-Butane. A single gram of concentrate can last a long time, as it provides between one and two hundred hits – depending on the size of your average hit. One of the most appealing aspects of the ThaiStick system is its accessibility. A delivery system, which vaporizes highgrade oil at the push of a button, is ideal for the on-the-go consumer, and its potency and quick onset make it ideal for breakthrough pain or nausea. In an effort to promote user safety, the ThaiStick reusable vapor pens come in childproof containers and the battery can lock by clicking the button five times.

In the end, it is the quality of ThaiStick products combined with the discrete accessibility of vaporizer pens that makes it an appealing choice. The mint flavor is a popular flavor and highly recommended; it was my personal favorite because of how smooth it tasted.

STATELY DUCK APOTHECARY The One. The Only. The Original.
Russ explained that his wife is one of the biggest reasons Stately Duck exists today. “Without her, we wouldn’t have done anything,” Russ said. “It’s all thanks to her, really.” Joy said athletes are some of their biggest customers, “The MMA guys especially love it.” “Our products work without the marijuana in them,” Joy explained. “[But] it works better with it in them. It’s the ultimate medicine.” The biggest draws to their products-mostly topical creams--not having to ingest marijuana to feel the relief. “Customers can treat the pain where it is, instead of being drugged up all the time,” Joy said. CHACE DAVY STAFF EDITOR When talking about medicinal marijuana, the first words that come to mind probably aren’t “lip balm” or “massage oil.” That’s exactly the perception that owners Joy & Russ, of The Stately Duck Apothecary in Gig Harbor, Wash. are trying to change. Stately Duck’s products, which along with the aforementioned products range from bathing soaks to herbal teas, are all infused with cannabis. A familiar tale in the industry, Stately Duck saw a need in the market as they noticed, “None of the products [I looked at] had the right combination of ingredients,” Joy explained. They believe their products are meant to be a more clean way of recovery. Stately includes both infused canna coconut oil and hemp seed oil, which work in conjunction with natural herbs and essential oils. Each of their products are meant to serve very specific purposes and treat very specific ailments. They pride themselves on being an all-natural herbal company. “We were worried about inactive ingredients that may cause cancer,” Joy said. Joy cited inactive ingredients in common products such as Icy Hot, which he found out is linked to cancer. After a lot of research, he and his wife decided to create the Stately Duck Apothecary. The Stately Duck has been around for around a year and a half, and is named that in honor of Joy’s grandpa. “He was a hard, true old guy,” Joy explained. 64

featured NEWS:
FIRST CITY RUN RECREATIONAL DISPENSARY CHACE DAVY STAFF EDITOR The town of North Bonneville, Wash., is a quite town with littleto-no notoriety; however, the town has been making waves in the news recently thanks to the city’s local government opening up a recreational marijuana shop called The Cannabis Corner. According to Bee Miller, supervisor of The Cannabis Corner, having the city run a marijuana shop was one of the only ways for the local government to get money back from the sale of recreational marijuana in North Bonneville, since all money from sales in Washington goes to the state’s budget. “For the recreational marijuana market, it’s definitely a gamechanger,” Miller said. Miller said the idea of having the government run a cannabis shop spawned from the fact that local governments operate liquor stores. “It’s the same concept as liquor stores, Miller said. “We’re using models that exist for other industries and putting them together to create a strategy that’s smart and effective for our local community.” The Cannabis Corner currently employs 11 people, and is still pulling in new vendors. “Having a local job to commute to is so good for area residents,” Miller said. “We’re supporting a whole network of hundreds of jobs in the region.” Despite the hefty taxes that Washington State puts on the sale of cannabis, Miller said the shop is actually turning a profit. “We’re still running a solid business that providing local, regional jobs,” Miller said. “We’re seeing results every day, even if they’re small.” With the cannabis industry gaining steam in Washington, and now that the store is finally open, Miller said the store has received a lot of positive feedback from the community. “I’ve noticed that in the store, everyone that comes is really happy, and we actually have some regulars,” Miller said. “We have a dedicated regional following, people are so thrilled that prohibition is starting to end.” Miller said the clientele that walks through the doors is mostly older people that don’t have access to the black market, and potentially have a lot to lose by acquiring marijuana illegally. “There are people that are willing to pay a little bit more to do it right,” Miller said. 66
