MEDICAL FEATURE: 420INSIGHT.COM CONTRIBUTOR

CANNABIS & CHRON’S

A new clinical study published in the journal Pharmacology and by the National Institute of Health has found that cannabis is effective in treating Crohns disease, which is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBDs such as ulcerative colitis and Crohns affect over a million people in the United States. Many IBD victims suffer from pain, diarrhea and poor ability to digest food, and up to half of IBD cases are so severe that they ultimately require surgery to remove the affected bowel segment. The study, entitled: “Cannabis Finds Its Way into Treatment of Crohn’s Disease” (International Journal of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, Vol. 93, No. 1-2, 2013 Dec 17;93(1-2):1-3. [epublished ahead of print] © 2013 S. Karger AG, Basel.PMID: 24356243) is co-authored by Rudolf Schicho, PhD and M. Storr, both of the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, Medical University of Graz in Graz, Austria. In the study abstract, Schicho and Storr note that In ancient medicine, cannabis was widely used to treat and cure bowel disturbances and inflammation, and a recent clinical study now shows that the medicinal herb Cannabis sativa lived up to expectations and proved to be highly efficient in cases of inflammatory bowel diseases. The researchers report that a prospective placebocontrolled study has confirmed what was largely anticipatedfromanecdotalreports,i.e.thatcannabis produces significant clinical benefits in patients with Crohn’s disease. They note that mechanisms involved are not yet clear, but most likely include peripheral actions on cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2, and may also include central actions. The Crohn’s Forum notes that the body produces substances called Endocannabinoids or Endogenous Cannabinoids, which function in a similar manner to Cannabinoids found in medicinal marijuana. Cannabinoids (CBs), either produced within the body or taken from an external source (ie: Pharmaceutical or Medicinal Marijuana), exert effects that may be of benefit to patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and certain types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Medicinal Marijuana affects Cannabinoid Receptors (CB) in the Gastrointestinal Tract and can exert effects that help relieve symptoms. These effects include a reduction of: Pain, Inflammation, Diarrhea, Gastrointestinal Hypermotility and Secretion. Cannabis can reduce painful Gastrointestinal cramping as it is a smooth muscle relaxant, and can relax the Intestinal spasms. Cannabinoids can also increase healing of injured Epithelial Tissues. Many of these effects are due to Cannabinoid stimulation of Cannabinoid Receptors (CB) located in many parts of the body. The human body produces and utilizes its own cannabinoids, but can also utilize cannabinoids from external sources such as cannabis. In their paper, Schicho and Storr observe that over the past decade there has been a steady increase in the number of publications addressing the anti-inflammatory effects of Cannabinoids and potential underlying mechanisms, and in particular

that preclinical data on the ameliorating effect of synthetic and natural CBs in animal models mimicking features of IBD have been rapidly evolving. They cite a prospective placebo-controlled study by T. Naftali et al. (Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol 2013;11:1276-1280.

External Resources) on the effect of cannabis in IBD than confirms what had been suggested for a long time from experimental studies, to wit that Cannabinoids may provide anti-inflammatory effectsandsymptomaticbenefitinpatientswithIBD. The Austrian researchers note that CB1 and CB2 receptors are located at the colonic epithelium, making a protective effect of the cannabinoid Delta-9-TetraHydroCannabinol (THC) via epithelial permeability is conceivable, in which case CBs could enhance epithelial wound closure in the colon. They also note that other studies have demonstrated that a prominent characteristic of CBs in experimental intestinal inflammation is their effect on immunocytes which mainly express CB2 receptors. Upon CB2 activation, T cells undergo apoptosis and decreased proliferation in colitis, and additionally, activation of CB2 diminishes the recruitmentofneutrophils,Tcellsandmacrophages to the inflamed colon. CB receptors are also found in the enteric nervous system (ENS), that controls gut motility and secretion. CB1 receptors present in the ENS represent a break that protects the ENS from hyperstimulation, which is easily caused by overexpression of inflammatory mediators that activate the ENS during IBD. Consequently, they deduce that activation of CB receptors by THC may reduce hypermotility associated with the inflammation of the gut, and that reduction of hypermotility may alleviate diarrhea, producing beneficial effects for the patient. The Crohn’s Forum reports that signaling through CB1 also has potent effects that may be beneficial to persons with IBD, including: reduction of Nausea/Vomiting, inhibition of Intestinal Motility, and anti-Inflammatory effects. They note that pharmaceutical companies are attempting to design medications that increase signaling through CB1, and which could potentially offer effective treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) including Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. CB1 is present in the Brain and is responsible for the Psychological and Behavioral effects seen with use of Medicinal Marijuana. In order to be an effective treatment and minimize psychological effects seen with Medical Marijuana use, the pharmaceutical should be specific for CB1 and not cross the Blood Brain Barrier. Moreover, CB1 appears to protect against severe Colitis.TheForumcitesstudiesinmicethathaveCB1 blocked or do not have CB1 (CB1 knockout mice) which develop more severe experimental colitis symptoms than wild type mice. In animal models of Colitis, pretreatment with CB1 agonists (chemicals that activate the Receptor) leads to reduced chemical-induced Inflammation and Edema than animals not given pretreatment medication. They note that the herb Cannabis sativa contains many more chemicals that may be relevant to disease treatment benefit than marijuana’s commonly known active compounds, THC and CBD, observing that it has been estimated that

THC accounts for only one-third of medicinal marijuana’s effects, and that, chemicals found in Cannabis sativa extracts may either enhance the Inhibit the therapeutic effects of THC. In an article originally appearing in Alternet, republished by Salon, Paul Armentano notes studies revealing that marijuana contains more than 60 active compounds likely possessing distinctive therapeutic properties, including anti-cancer properties, anti-diabetic properties, neuroprotection, and anti-stroke properties of cannabinoids other than tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound of cannabis, whichitselfhasvaluabletherapeuticeffects. Of course, a major obstacle and inhibiting factor to more widespread deployment of Cannabis in fighting diseases like IBS is that marijuana, including medical marijuana, remains illegal in in most US states at the federal level in the USA as well as in various countries around the world. However, in 2012 Washington and Colorado passed ballot initiatives legalizing marijuana for both recreational and medical, and currently 20 states and DC have enacted laws to legalize medical marijuana, but Texas is not among them. In a conference at Houston in November, 2009, the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates adopted a new policy position calling for review of marijuana’s status as a Schedule I drug in the federal Controlled Substances Act’. The old language in Policy H-95.952 had previously recommended that “marijuana be retained in Schedule I,” which groups marijuana with drugs such as heroin, LSD and PCP that are deemed to have no accepted medical uses and to be unsafe for use even under medical supervision. The AMA’s revised policy states: “Our AMA urges that marijuana’s status as a federal Schedule I controlled substance be reviewed with the goal of facilitating the conduct of clinical research and development of cannabinoid-based medicines, and alternate delivery methods.” Drugs listed in Schedule II, for which medical use is permitted with strict controls, include cocaine, morphine and methamphetamine. A pill containing THC, the component responsible for marijuana’s “high,” is classed in Schedule III, whose looser requirements allow phoned-in prescriptions. The wheels turn slowly where cannabis is concerned. However, a poll commissioned by the Marijuana Policy Project in Texas shows that a strong majority of voters in the state support taking marijuana off the criminal market, legalizing it for adults, and taxing and regulating it similarly to alcohol. According to the poll, 58% of voters support making this change, while only 38% were opposed. The Texas Democratic Party made decriminalization of marijuana part of its official platform last year, and KHOU Houston reports that two Texas lawmakers have vowed to reintroduce marijuana legislation as many times as it takes to move the state closer to Colorado and Washington state-style pot regulations.

MEDIBLE REVIEW: KYMBER WARD STAFF EDITOR Do you know the Muffin Man? If not, you really should! Muffin Man is one of the best edibles I have recently tried. The Muffin Man was created on the streets and in the Coffeeshops of Amsterdam where the roots of the cannabis culture originated. In 2002, Muffin Man’s passion for cannabis prompted The Muffin Man to move to Amsterdam to pursue a career in the cannabis industry. He became the head breeder for a prominent seed bank. Though, he never abandoned his culinary roots and always found time to bake medical muffins for his eagerly waiting friends and people he met. As word of mouth spread about the mysterious

While their Cali Bars are delicious, I simply cannot get enough of the amazing Caramel Marshmallow Bars. These gluten free products consist of a layer of fresh, small batch made marshmallow and caramel studded with toasted walnuts and pecans, dipped in milk chocolate and sprinkled with crunchy candied walnuts. These bars are a delicious gluten free option and I super excited to see what comes next.

Good News Cannabis Users: Smoking Weed Will NOT Make You Stupid!

MEDICAL NEWS: SHELLY EVANS STAFF EDITOR

Most avid marijuana users are not at all surprised by the news that smoking weed won’t make you dumb, we already know. To the rest of the world, this is big news, but what it means for our community is huge. Until now, any studies that have hit mainstream media surrounding marijuana have been what Nickolas Jackson, Statistician at USC calls “taking a snapshot”. Often times they are the kind of studies where test subjects are observed during specific points in time where too many variables could convolute the findings. Factors like mental health and major life events. That style of information gathering is what has perpetuated the idea of the “stupid stoner” and directly affected marijuana users with harsh regulations and prohibition - all mostly based on incorrect data. Recently, there has been a trend of studies that are changing the conversation around marijuana’s medicinal legitimacy. These new studies are proving what was previously a theory. A theory that long-time marijuana users already know - that marijuana does not make you less intelligent. One

particular study is drawing attention as it is the first of it’s kind - a medical revelation. The study took 789 pairs of teenage twins. Each of the twins were a pairing of a chronic marijuana user and a non-medicator. The study took place over a period of ten years taking subjects from Minnesota and Los Angeles (in separate studies). Each subject enrolled at the age of 9-11. The conclusion? While there was no definite answer regarding the safety of marijuana use in teens, there was also no link between IQ and marijuana use. Though other studies of this kind have been published; this particular study is innovative in it’s control of test variables by using biologically similar pairings.

There have been studies that came before this one where scientists attempted to take a longer sampling of IQ with random test subjects and even though there were more than 2000

in this sampling, the results returned similarly. In this most recent random, non sibling study - as has been seen consistently with most studies of it’s kind - though there were minor declines in IQ observed with the medicating test subjects; the same rate of decline was seen in the non-medicating test subjects suggesting that the decline was due to some third shared stressor or event. This sentiment was agreed upon by lecturer of Psychology at Loyola Marymount University: “[An adolescent marijuana user] is probably going to show this IQ drop regardless of whether he or she is actually smoking marijuana”. This medical breakthrough may not make huge splash on the surface, and information-wise, but studies like this one that shed light on stereotypes, and that educate the public on marijuana mean the destigmatization of marijuana. When the use of marijuana is removed from stigma and the common belief that smoking makes you less intelligent - and thus less useful to society - it will bring us one step closer to passing legislation that allows for legalization. So, while in the short term this may not be earth-shattering news, it could in the long term be a stepping stone on the road to legalization.

medible REVIEWS:

JILLY JANE’S MEDI-ROONS TRIPLE 7 BAKERY RACHELLE CUMMINGS STAFF EDITOR Medi-Roons are a product I have been dying to try since they hit the market. I am always looking for a healthier alternative to the cookies and gummies that currently have the market cornered. Although, I do predict that more and more consumers and patients will seek out nutritional edibles (hint hint, nudge nudge edible makers). Medi-Roons are both delicious and good for you! Medi-Roons currently offers two products, the Lemon Pie and Brownie in both indica & sativa. Before I go into the actual review, let me just preface this by telling you I HATE citrus in baked goods and pastries. I am no lemon meringue kind of a girl. With that being said, the Lemon Pie Medi-Roons are amazing. They are moist and decadent. When you bite into one you cannot help yourself from eating the whole thing. I personally tasted the sativa Lemon Pie and the indica Brownie, both were absolutely delicious and an effective medicine. Unlike all of the sugar based edibles I am used to I did not feel horrible after I ate them. It is extremely nice to have an edible that bridges the gap between patient and edible without being pumped full of GMOs and other harsh chemicals. Medi-Roons are made with only natural products. They are gluten free, paleo, vegan and scrumdiddlyumptious. The co-founder of Medi-Roons understands the importance of getting the right medicine to the patient using the right delivery method. The Medi-Roon’s owner is a United States Marine Corp Veteran who personally uses his indica products to help manage PTSD. Both the Lemon Pie and Brownie come in 8 packs - 30mg each, so there is a total of 240mg in the entire package. Upon first biting into the Lemon Pie, I expected to taste the equivalent of lemon mixed with grass in a cookie; however, to my dismay, the cannabis was (almost) undetectable and the lemon flavoring was not overpowering. In fact, I felt like Goldilocks and the lemon was just right! The Brownie was equally well done. The marijuana was far more prevalent in the brownie, yet not overpowering. There was a nice balance of the 3 C’s - coconut, cacao and cannabis. The best medicine truly does start with the food you eat and in the wise words of Medi-Roons, “Live the High Life Naturally!” Medi-Roons has done a phenomenal job of creating a healthy and tasty edible. I am happy to say that Medi-Roons are 100% Edibles List Approved. 22

SHELLY EVANS STAFF EDITOR The Jilly Jane’s Triple 7 Bakery Fruity Stoned bar is… beautiful. Looking at it, you can just tell it’s going to be a good time. First of all - lezbehonest - I like anything rainbow. Call it a stereotype if you must, but I do. The Fruity-stoned bar is a gorgeous ombre’d package with a clever rainbowbranded logo. I almost feel like Jilly Jane just made this bar for all the queer people of the world. So I’ll pretend it was made for us and consume it often in appreciation. It’s very clever and comprehensive branding because the wrapper is multi-colored, (and it’s called the fruity stoned bar), so it builds anticipation for more rainbow. It does not disappoint. The fruity stoned bar is a rainbow-licious bar of cereal buttery marshmallow goodness, but it’s in a rainbow wrapper. C’mon. They’ve got me from the jump. It offers a very mellow, euphoric body high. I’m actually writing this article to you after having medicated with some of it and I don’t feel trippy, or out of control. I feel like bobbing my head to 90’s R&B and talking to people that I love. My body feels very relaxed and my head feels clear. I love this feeling and the energy it brings. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of the fruity-stoned bar. It’s a scrumptious, visually and orally delightful treat with great consistency, texture, and clean flavor that offers a very chill, functional high.

medible REVIEWS:

SO KIND KYMBER WARD STAFF EDITOR Just because it’s medicine does not mean it can’t be pretty! SoKind edibles are an extremely fun way to medicate. Their handcrafted designs are like little works of art. SoKind offers tastefully designed, frosted cookies and brownie bites. Upon first examining the package I noticed that SoKind not only vacuum seals the product with an instructional insert, they also wrap and seal each individual product. While their packaging is somewhat rudimentary, I do applaud them for taking packaging guidelines into their own hands, as California has not yet implemented those regulations. In order for a company to continue operating in California in the coming years, it will be important to anticipate future needs - much like SoKind has. Additionally, I really appreciated the informational insert included with the edibles. At this point, almost all edible companies are including some sort of informational guide with their products. In theory, these are great for consumers; however, many of them use cannabis jargon a novice user may not understand. Not SoKind! SoKind cleverly describes all pertinent information, warnings, ingredients, etc. in a way that anyone can understand. It is educational and witty - great job SoKind! SoKind’s award winning cookies are truly a tantalizing treat. The frosted designs range from psychedelic swirls to colorful pot leaves to aliens and more. I tried a 200mg Rastafarian themed cookie. At first, I was not sure what to expect seeing as I couldn’t tell what kind of cookie it was. Once I took the first bite it was extremely evident it was a chocolate chip cookie. As I continued eating, I was surprised to not really taste the weed, instead it actually tasted citrusy. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that the frosting was not overly sugary and the cookie itself was soft. The brownie bites are a bit more traditional and elegant. Some have swirls or designs, but I believe the prettiest version are the pastel colored brownies with a white drizzle (depicted above). They are pretty enough to be featured on any high-end bakery’s shelf. The brownie bites come in 3 packs totaling to 200mg between them. The flavor profiles were well balanced, but I found them to be a bit too dry for my taste and the cannabis taste was far more prevalent than the cookies. All in all, I enjoyed these products. SoKind, keep the colorful edibles coming! Check out some of SoKind’s trippy treats on Instagram: @sokindcookies 24

HEALTHY HIGH B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF When asked about the inspiration of his company, the creator of Healthy High said, “I felt there was a tremendous lack of healthy options for patients medicating with edibles and wanted to bring my culinary experience and knowledge as a nutritional coach together to provide healthy edible alternatives to patients. Food itself can either be the cure or cause for ailments and disease. By delivering cannabis and all it’s wonderful healing benefits in a treat that isn’t full of artificial garbage and ingredients that do more harm than help, it’s a win-win. You’re doing your body a favor by choosing a healthy edible as opposed to adding to the problem by eating junk.” The owner of Healthy High was working as a private chef and nutritional coach to Hollywood celebrities, helping his clients shift their lifestyles and diets to become healthier through raw and vegan foods as well as juice cleansing. Additionally, he ran his own dehydrated, raw, organic snack foods company, selling products locally and online. We’ve reviewed some of Healthy High’s products before, but because there is such a lack of healthy edibles out there, we want to bring light back to their line as a truly healthy option. They infuse their products using raw, organic coconut oil and high quality cannabis trim. The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bar is one of their most popular products. It is made from all-natural, simple ingredients that you can pronounce. There are no preservatives or artificial additives of any sort and it is made with coconut oil, which has been proven to support weightloss! Their products are currently Indica based, they are great for pain relief, deep muscle relaxation, anxiety, nausea, headaches and insomnia. “I’ve seen, first hand, the powerful transformation and healing that’s possible through choosing healthy foods. I helped one of my clients lose 60 lbs in a little over two months by doing just that. The foods we eat contribute directly to many of the health problems that people experience - obesity being one of them. Poor food choices lead to the deterioration of health and good food choices promote health and longevity. The power of cannabis combined with healthy foods is a recipe for greatness!,” said the owner of Healthy High. They have several exciting new products in the works. They will be expanding to include Sativa options as well as high CBD products. Their new products will retain Healthy High’s focus on healthy, natural ingredient-based edibles and will provide a low-calorie, high potency product that’s easy to measure individual dosing in a convenient, discreet package.

MADE WITH LOVE MEDIBLES

MOTHER’S MEDICATED

SHELLY EVANS STAFF EDITOR

RACHELLE CUMMINGS STAFF EDITOR Made with Love Medibles is a company that offers scrumptious treats for anyone with a sweet tooth. The best part, you can have your cake and eat it too! The masterminds behind Made with Love have come up with an interesting take on an average cupcake. In fact, when I opened the bag I had no idea what to expect. There were two products I was to review, Sticky Lick Me Bar and a mini ice cream cone. My interest was piqued with the ice cream… what could it be? The Sticky Lick Me Bar is an ooey gooey Lucky Charm cereal bar, complete with some charms on top. The bar is 150mg and is incredibly potent. It was a nice mellow high, but it hit me pretty hard. With that said, this is still definitely not a daytime medicating kind of an edible. The real showstoppers were the frosted ice cream cones. As I mentioned, I was not entirely sure what they were, so I took a gamble and bit into one. The cones are approximately 1 inch in height, frosted with sprinkles over top. When you bite into it you do not find ice cream, but instead there’s cake! The three flavors I tried were red velvet, white and chocolate. Let me tell you the chocolate cake was effing amazing! I had one and then ultimately ended up eating four more. I strongly suggest you try these little bites of amazingness. Check them out on IG: @madewithlovemedibles 30

I have to say, I was really delighted at the high from Mother’s Medicated products. The experience is incredibly euphoric. When I was feeling the effects of Mother’s Medicated I felt this overwhelming sense of calm and clarity, and my body felt amazing. I felt very comfortable, and relaxed, and my predominant thoughts were of really pleasant creative ideas, and hilariously overwhelming gratitude (which I’m sure all of my Facebook friends found amusing). Mother’s Medicated Cannatella is such a unique product and I was immediately intrigued. While the taste was intense, the texture on warm toast was lovely. It’s a “chocolatey” spread that’s chocolate free. I ate it on toast but any one of the Mother’s Medicated spreads I’ve eaten could just as easily eaten from the jar, or added to a recipe. I was initially a little gun-shy about Mother’s Medicated Jammies because it has a really unique flavor and appeal but it grows on you and it’s become my favorite spread. It’s a little bit nutty but very sweet and super creamy. The overwhelming flavor is almost cashewlike. I ate this one directly from the jar. The Mother’s Medicated Almond Butter was unique too with it’s nutty, complex taste. It’s unlike any almond butters I’ve had before and it has a bit of a saltiness that I really enjoyed. The coolest thing about all of these products is that they are special diet friendly, so they’re Gluten Free, NonGMO, Vegan, chocolate & caffeine free, and they’ve got a low glycemic index. These spreads are especially nice because if you have a high tolerance, just an ounce will do the trick (about enough to cover the inside of two bagel halves), because they are potent.

MEDIBLE REVIEW:

MOONMAN’S MISTRESS

FINALLY HEALTHY PALEO EDIBLES! B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF EdiblesList.com is adding a new dietary specific icon to our vendor profiles: P for Paleo. When I started this company I was looking for healthy edibles, and I’ve finally found a sugar-free edible that can really be included in part of an overall healthy diet. MoonMan’s Mistress is one of my new favorite edible companies. They offer a Paleo, Gluten-Free, Dairy Free, Soy-Free, Low Glycemic product line.

The Trail Mix Super Nova Cookie won 1st Place Best Healthy Edible in our Best of 2015 Edibles List Awards. If healthy medibles is what you are looking for, look no further. This cookie is anything but a cookie.

Their patients have reported the below health conditions have been positively effected by these products. • Autoimmune Diseases (such as Crohn’s, Hashimoto’s, Celiac, Lupus, etc.) • Food Allergies • Patients on low glycemic and low carb diets or those with specific dietary needs • Inflammation and Pain Management • IBS • Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Insomnia

Their brand promise is to provide the healthiest, most taste worthy It is like a nut-free, protein filled, edibles made with authenticity superfood treat. You can Mini Space Cake and the Trail Mix great way to start your day with a also expect to see them supporting Super Nova Cookie. Their edibles superfood jumpstart and get your education on sustainability of the are 20-50mg each, are created meds all at once, without feeling body via the value of medicinal in a certified gluten-free facility guilty that you just ate butter, sugar cannabis and clean eating. and 100% of their ingredients are and fat. For those of you who are new to the Paleo Diet, it is an effort to eat like we used to back in the day…WAY back in the day. If a caveman could not eat it, neither can you. This means anything we could hunt or find – meats, fish, nuts, leafy greens, regional veggies, and seeds.

The Chocolate Chip Crater Cookie is not just a classic favorite, but is also made with the benefits of coconut oil. Remember, not all Chocolate Chip cookies are created equal. Their Crater Cookie is one of the healthiest cookies around without compromising taste! The Pumpkin Pecan Mini Space Cake is their best version of the seasonal fall & winter flavor packed with the all the health benefits of pumpkin. Year round you can enjoy the comforting taste of pumpkin in this mini cookie shaped cake. I love pumpkin, so I was thrilled to review this one. It was yummy, SO yummy!

“This industry is about treating and healing people. We felt the market needed more healthy alternative options. There are many patients (including Liz, one of the cofounders of MoonMan’s Mistress) who cannot consume many, if not most of the edibles currently in market due to dietary restrictions, allergies, autoimmune diseases and things of that nature. We wanted to address this gap by offering “clean” alternatives made with ingredients beneficial to the body. Our core foundations are based on healing and education, performance and recovery,” Jamel, Co-Founder of MoonMan’s Mistress says.

LOS ANGELES NEEDS

A NEW MARIJUANA POLICY

SHELLY EVANS STAFF EDITOR If you are an avid marijuana user in Los Angeles and are not worried about the future, it is probably because you have not heard the news yet. If we do not get our act together and vote on regulations that we want, by 2018, all medicinal marijuana dispensaries and businesses will be illegal.

sale and transport of medicinal marijuana after it enacted the CUA (Compassionate Use Act). Even now, instead of moving forward, the proposed action could mean a major setback and real damage to the medical marijuana industry.

The legislation is called the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act. The tricky thing is that on the surface, the legislation sounds great. It would allow the state for Apparently the city’s conservative the very first time to issue medical governor Jerry Brown believes that marijuana business licenses. the mediators of Los Angeles county Unfortunately, underneath it’s an are for trifling reasons attempting uglier monster. This does not just mean no more legalized weed, but because the owners of any shops open after 2018 will actively be committing crimes, it could potentially mean the loss of business and a potential criminal prosecution charge. Do not fret too much though, there is a silver lining. The GLACA (The Greater Los Angeles Collective Alliance) is working on legislation that would implement a local permitting scheme for all medical marijuana businesses including dispensaries, growers, delivery services, edible manufacturers, etc. It’s a piece of legislation that could save all the businesses left exposed by the many loopholes in Prop D. If this piece of legislation passes, the great new Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act would actually do Los Angeles some good. We would be included in the wave of regulation and by the year 2018 all existing businesses could apply for a permit and continue to exist into 2019.

MEDIBLE REVIEWS:

MASTER BAKER

EATMYGREENS

CHOICE REMEDY

KYMBER WARD STAFF EDITOR

RICHARD BELL STAFF EDITOR I reviewed the MasterBaker Snowball Effect 100 mg THC/package. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The packaging is very nice, but I could not tell that they were cookies until opening it. The package was clearly marked with all of the pertinent information. That is always good when you know your own tolerance level. For me to stay at a comfortable level, I know not to eat more than one quarter of the package’s contents at a time.

SHELLY EVANS STAFF EDITOR I am just now discovering the concept of savory edibles and let me tell you, they’re out there, but they’re pioneered by people like the founders of EATMYGREENS, Javier and Marisa. Javier co-founded EATMYGREENS to share the product he’d cultivated to help his mother ailing of cancer. What makes Chong Mix so unique is the fact that right now - it’s the only product EATMYGREENS carries.

When asked why Chong Mix is ‘’EATMYGREENS’ shining solitary product, Javier commented, “Our company focused on the product itself -- on Chong Mix….We decided to focus on one product and make it the best of the best. We feel we have accomplished that. Quality over The cookies are absolutely delicious. They quantity.” How unique! I say, why mess with were very fresh and crisp. If you are used perfection? to eating infused foods, you may be able Chong Mix is a delightful experience for to tell that they are medicated. But for the palate with its colorful blend of herbs, me, they were very tasty and effective. I spices, and little top notes of delicate have had to consume more medication sweetness. The different textures of its than usual lately because of some ingredients crunchy, and smooth are outstanding medical problems. This is blended together to make eating Chong definitely a pleasant way of doing that. Mix a really interesting sensory experience. From my experience, the dosing is pretty spot on. The packaging states 100 mg OG Kush. I didn’t see any weird preservatives or other odd ingredients. That is a huge plus in my book. I have to be very conscious of what I consume because certain ingredients in foods affect me in a huge way.

The packaging for this medible is really clean and informative. The dosage and nutrition facts are displayed clearly on the front of the packaging and it’s easy to tear open on the side.

It is an Indica-based edible so it is paired with a sense of calm and heaviness and comfort that makes you want to sleep. Chong Mix is such a unique, vegan, palateMasterbaker definitely has a hit here. I pleasing medible with really effective can’t wait to try another of their culinary psychotropic effects that are engineered creations. Please look them up when to treat pain, insomnia, pain, and you get a chance, and happy landings… depression.

Lazy Fruit by Choice Remedy are THE quintessential example of “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” I have to admit, when I first saw these products I was not that enticed. I am always uncertain when it comes to gummies, often times the flavors just don’t quite taste as they should or all you can taste is the CO2 oil sprayed on them. However, I was well aware that Choice Remedy makes phenomenal products, so I tried the Fruit Punch flavor. It was absolutely delicious. The gummies have a perfect sour to sweet ratio. The gummies themselves are fairly large in size, but only weigh in at 40mg and rolled in sugar. I decided to eat mine before bed and then I decided to eat another because it was so delicious. This time I tried Melon Margarita, let me tell ya’ the flavor profiles are on point, to say the least. The Lemonade really tastes like Lemonade. It is neither too sweet nor sour. About an hour after I ate them I started to doze off. I woke up feeling refreshed and without a weed hangover, so that’s always a win! The founder of Choice Remedy became a medical marijuana patient in 2001 after suffering an injury at work. He founded the company in 2009 and set out on a mission to educate people on the proper use and benefits of medical marijuana. As well as to help those suffering find relief through cannabis as an alternative to prescription drugs. Choice Remedy never uses BHO or harmful chemicals in their edibles and coconut oil or avocado oil is their preferred infusion process. They will decarboxylate the cannabis 70-80% then slow cook it in the Choice oil. Choice Remedy edibles are both delicious and effective. PATIENT STORY:

CANNABIS & ALCOHOLISM

KARIN CLARKE CONTRIBUTOR My name is Karin and I am an alcoholic. I have spent the past 27 years abstinent from all mind altering drugs, pills, booze, medications, etc. I have found peace within myself and have helped others afflicted with the disease of alcoholism through working a 12 step program. I was dying from drug addiction and these 12 steps showed me design for living that I will always respect and be grateful for what I have learned. What also came for me in those 27 years is living life and the dreaded aging process. Having fun, challenging myself physically, having a family, carving out careers and finding adventures has been part of what makes me happy. What I did not expect to find was Cannabis. Cannabis was called “pot” when I stopped smoking it and it was the “gateway” drug straight to hell. My story with Cannabis started when a dear friend of mine told me she had stage 4 colon cancer and was given 3-6

As my own curiosity grew, I contacted a company who created topical creams and potions infused with Cannabis. The owner told me that I would not get high using their products which I wanted to try for a massage oil to help relieve pain and inflammation. He sent me samples with his word that I would not get high. Much to my relief (both physically and mentally) I did not get high using these lotions and potions. What I did get is serious pain relief, better sleep and I have not taken arthritis medicine for almost 2 years. Oh, that fabulous arthritis medicine that was prescribed by my doctor, I had to have my liver tested for damage from the prescription drug in order for it to be refilled every three months. I’m pretty sure that is code for “not good for my body”!

This experience made me start to dig further, find stories, find more studies and listen to what people were using Cannabis for, other than just “getting high”. I was blown away to find there is a medicinal side to Cannabis that I never knew existed. I opened my mind to something that for 25 years I told

myself was bad and would kill me if I ever used it. I was completely opposed to pot. I had been appalled at the dispensaries on every other corner opening in my neighborhood and was furious they were there.

months to live. She was 49 years old and this news was devastating. She was not the kind of person to sit back and let cancer dictate her circumstances so we got busy looking for alternatives. She found that vaping Cannabis was the only treatment that helped her sleep and minimize her pain from the cancer and traditional cancer treatments. Her appetite was gone and Cannabis was the only “medicine” that helped her get food down! Along with Cannabis she sought help from other countries that provided treatments not approved here in the United States. My friend lived for 2 ½ years after her diagnosis. She was 51 years old and 18 years sober when she passed away from cancer in December 2013.

meDIBLE rECIPES:

With Valentines Day coming up, you want a classic romantic meal that not only provides great nutrition but may have an affect on the libido. We all know that fish has been known to act as aphrodisiac, at the same time, what guy (or good woman for that matter) doesn’t like bacon! Here’s a twist on a classic dish to add a little red meat to the flare.

Totally Medicated Bacon Wrapped Baked Salmon

Ingredients

4 wild salmon fillets, about 5 oz. each (that’s just under 2 lbs of salmon in total); 2 sprigs tarragon, cut in half; Zest of 1 lemon; 8 slices of bacon; 2 tbsp. maple syrup or honey; (optional) 3 tbsp. Canna Olive OIl (We like Chef Nuha or Goodies By Magooch) Sea Salt and freshly ground pepper

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375 F. Season the salmon to taste with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Top each fillet with a sprig of tarragon and some lemon zest. Wrap each fillet with 2 slices of bacon. Heat some Canna Olive Oil in a large ovenproof skillet over a medium-high heat. Fry the salmon on each side until golden brown (about 2 minutes per side). Brush each fillet with the maple syrup or honey, if using, and transfer to the oven. Place the salmon in the oven until cooked through (about 8 -10 minutes).

420 Infused Shrimp Ceviche Ingredients:

1 lb cooked-shrimp (We prefer the tiny version as to require less chopping.) 1/4 finely diced, red bell pepper 1/4 finely diced orange or yellow bell pepper 1/2 finely diced jalepeno pepper 1/4 diced jicama 1/4 diced cucumber 1 tablespoon finely diced shallot 2 tablespoons cilantro 2 tablespoons of Canna Olive Oil Juice of 1 lime Juice of 1 lemon 2 cups of sliced cucumber for dipping Instructions:

Toss then chill in the fridge for 30 mins before serving.

What’s a great appetizer to fish? More seafood of course. Shrimp Ceviche is far easier to make than traditional raw fish ceviche.

Canna Olive Oil Infused Asparagus Ingredients:

1 bundle of asparagus 3 tbsp. Canna Olive Oil Instructions:

Brush bundles of asparagus with Canna Olive Oil. Add as many sliced greek or klamata olives as you want to the mix and shred lemon zest over it all. Add sea salt and black pepper to taste. Preheat oven for 375 and cook for 10 mins 54

Paleo Homemade Chocolate

What’s more romantic as a desert than chocolate? How about a paleo twist? Ingredients: 2 Tablespoons Canna Coconut Oil (We like Trikom Treats Canna Coconut Oil) 3 tablespoons coconut butter 2 tablespoons almond butter 1/4 teaspoon pur vanilla extract 2 teaspoons mint extract 1 teaspoon pure maple syrup 1 tablespoon cacao powder for coating Instructions: Place Canna Coconut Oil, butter, almond butter, flavor ingredients, and pure vanilla extract into a bowl, and combine until smooth. Mix thoroughly. The mixture will be soft, so place it int he freezer for about 10 mins or until you can roll the batter into 1-inch balls with your hands. Roll each ball in the coating.

MEDICAL CORNER: 420INSIGHT.COM CONTRIBUTOR What is Glaucoma? The optic nerve carries signals from the eye to the brain, resulting in vision. Glaucoma can lead to damage of the optic nerve, and untreated, long-standing glaucoma can lead to blindness. In many cases, this damage is caused by an increase in pressure within the eye (intra-ocular pressure), resulting from abnormalities with the amount of fluid in the front portion of the eye, called “aqueous humor“, which is produced by a part of the eye called the ciliary body. Pressure in the eye builds either due to (1) a decrease in aqueous humor clearance due to a blockage in the outflow space, or (2) an increase in the amount of aqueous humor in the front eye compartment. For example, when blood pressure is high, the pressure in the capillaries of the ciliary body may also be high, leading to increased production by ultrafiltration/decreased absorption of aqueous humor, leading to an increase in liquid and, subsequently, pressure. What Are The Types of Glaucoma? There are two types of glaucoma, which each lead to different symptoms: Primary open-angle glaucoma [most common]:

Can Cannabinoid Therapies Help? In a study published in International Journal of Pharmacology and Biopharmacology in 1979, researchers studied a group of 16 participants with open-angle glaucoma, along with high blood pressure (8 participants) or no high blood pressure (8 participants). They found that when participants inhaled whole-plant cannabis with 2.8% delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), their heart rates first increased (in order to compensate for decreased blood and intra-ocular pressures caused by THC, the heart starts to pump blood faster in order to maintain blood flow to vital areas), and then their blood pressures and 60

In 1980, the same researchers, assisted by other colleagues, published an article in Ophthalmology reviewing the results of their 1979 study and noted that the lowering of blood pressure that led to decreased intraocular pressure [in the eyes] occurred within 60 to 90 minutes of inhalation. They also note that since cannabis inhalation led to side effects of increased heart rate, “feelings of having [a] rapid, fluttering, or pounding heart” (palpitations), and psychoactivity (i.e. the changes in perception, thought, feelings, etc. that is frequently associated with cannabis use), and excessively decreased blood pressure which can lead to such feelings as being lightheaded, the ability to recommend inhaled cannabis for patients may be limited. Additionally, given that the decrease in blood pressure caused by whole-plant cannabis use/THC may lead to a harmful reduction in blood flow to an already potentially damaged optic nerve (which could further damage the nerve), (1) development of cannabinoid therapies applied directly to the eye, rather than administered systemically (i.e. to the entire body, as with inhalation and ingestion), and (2) testing cannabinoids other than THC, may be more appropriate. In a 1981 study, the same researchers, again assisted by additional colleagues, found that use of 0.1% THC in light mineral oil, administered directly to the eyes (i.e. topically) of human participants with high blood pressure, resulted in decreased systolic blood pressure (pressure in vessels felt immediately when the heart contracts/pumps) which also may lead to decreased intra-ocular pressure. One of the authors noted in a guest editorial published in Journal of the National Medical Association in 1982 that in both animal and human studies, the maximum intensity of effect on intraocular pressure for topical administration of THC occurs at approximately 6 hours post-administration and lasts for 8-12 hours. In 2000, an animal study published in Graefe’s Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology found that topical administration of HU-211 (a synthetic, nonpsychoactive cannabinoid derivative, or varied/altered form, that blocks NMDA receptors, instead of stimulating cannabinoid receptors) to one eye of rabbits was able to decrease intra-ocular pressure. Effects began within 1.5 hours of administration and lasted for more than 6 hours. Additionally, IOP was decreased in the eye to which HU-211 had not been administered, although the effect was small and lasted for only 4 hours. Although no information on potential side effects was noted, this study shows that use of synthetic cannabinoids may be useful in treating

glaucoma without the potentially inconvenient or harmful side effects of psychoactive wholeplant cannabis use. Potential Control of Other Symptoms Symptoms of glaucoma that may be eased by cannabis use include pain, nausea, and vomiting, and a symptom of glaucoma which may be worsened by cannabis use is eye reddening. Not all patients with glaucoma will experience decreases in pain, nausea, or vomiting with cannabis use, and standard therapies recommended by a healthcare professional are the recommended first-line treatment. Additionally, the symptoms noted above are the direct result of increased pressure in the eye which can cause damage to the optic nerve. Therefore, reduction of intraocular pressure, rather than mere symptom control, is imperative. However, if you are not experiencing improvement in symptoms with standard therapy, or if standard therapies are causing negative side effects that you are finding it difficult to manage, these potential benefits of cannabis use can be discussed with your provider. Conclusion Cannabis use may temporarily relieve intraocular pressure, but it does not cure glaucoma. Although cannabis use has been shown to decrease IOP and has a favorable safety profile in general, its use is limited by:

the fact that it only works for a few hours before another administration is needed, which is important because psychoactive effects may decrease the ability to perform certain duties necessary in daily life, such as driving, and certain side effects that impact the heart and must be carefully considered or avoided in patients with heart issues.

t o p i c a l s

Eye pain Nausea and vomiting (accompanying the severe eye pain) Sudden onset of visual disturbance, often in low light Blurred vision Halos around lights Reddening of the eye Since many people show no signs of glaucoma until damage has already resulted, it is important to regularly attend appointments with an eye care professional in order to be properly screened.

intra-ocular pressures decreased. Effects were greater and lasted longer in participants with high blood pressure than in patients without high blood pressure, continuing for approximately 3-4 hours.

c a

Gradual loss of peripheral vision, usually in both eyes [i.e. when your primary attention is focused on one point, a loss of peripheral vision leads to an inability to see anything “on the sides”] Tunnel vision in the advanced stages Acute angle-closure glaucoma:

CANNABIS & GLAUCOMA

Additionally, other therapies for glaucoma may be more or equally effective and have fewer side effects than whole-plant cannabis use, due partially to their direct application to the eye (rather than systemically) and a subsequent reduced potential for negative or inconvenient side effects.

However, for patients experiencing certain negative side effects from standard therapies, whole-plant cannabis use may be an alternative option for managing high intra-ocular pressure and potentially certain symptoms, as well. Due to the potential for whole-plant cannabis use to decrease blood pressure and therefore blood supply to the optic nerve (potentially resulting in damage), as well as its potential to cause other negative side effects (especially for patients with heart issues), use should be carefully considered with and monitored by a healthcare professional. Increasing research on the use of cannabinoids in topical treatments may one day lead to new therapies for reducing intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma.

food science:

WHAT’S IN THAT FOOD PRODUCT?

RACHEL ZEMSER STAFF EDITOR I attended Hempcon a few weeks ago (Cow Palace, San Francisco) and was not impressed with the array of packaged cannabis food products on display by the many food vendors. Over the past few months I had been applauding medible food companies making the effort to be transparent with ingredient statements, allergen listings and nutritional information. However those companies are far and few between and I am seeing way too many products lacking important need to know information that should be on the product package. Imagine a world where you go to a supermarket and none of the foods list what they are, or what is in it. What if you have allergies or are trying to watch your calorie intake? What if you want to eat more protein, less carbs or more fat? Buying food products would be a mystery without ingredient statements. That’s the way it is right now in the world of Cannabis infused food products. A mystery. If entrepreneurs want to be ready expand and grow they should try to follow and comply with food labeling regulations, even if the FDA is not watching you, you should still make your product as if they were! The FDA has a very detailed guide that is available for anyone in the food industry, and it’s all available online. This website refers to the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR’s) by chapters and sections with links directly to the details on that section. http://www.fda.gov/ Food/GuidanceRegulation/ nceDocumentsRegulatoryInformation/ LabelingNutrition/ucm2006828.htm Become familiar with these regulations and try to adapt them to your own product. Diligent food labeling is crucial for the reputation of the cannabis food industry and will earn your company and product the respect it deserves. Show your consumers that you care about food safety and food laws. Here are a few mandatory labeling rules that apply to all retail packaged foods made and sold in the U.S. You should try to follow these rules and apply them to 72

your own products. Common and Usual Food Names: (21 CFR 101.3(b)(2) The common or usual name must be used for a food if it has one. It would be considered misleading to label a food that has an established name with a new name. If the food is subject to a standard of identity (like salad dressing or cheddar cheese) it should bear the name specified in the standard. In other words, if you only use fanciful names like “Elixir” or “Health Syrup” no one will know what you are selling. Make sure you clearly state “carbonated sugar sweetened beverage” or “Rice Crisp and Marshmallow Bar” underneath your marketed name.

is to include the name of the food source in parenthesis following the common or usual name of the major food allergen in the list of ingredients in instances when the name of the food source of the major allergen does not appear elsewhere in the ingredient statement. For example: Ingredients: Enriched flour (wheat flour, malted barley, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), sugar, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, and/or cottonseed oil, high fructose corn syrup, whey (milk), eggs, vanilla, natural and artificial flavoring) salt, leavening (sodium acid pyrophosphate, monocalcium phosphate), lecithin (soy), mono-and diglycerides (emulsifier).

The second option is to place the word “Contains” followed by the name of the food source from which the major food allergen is derived, immediately after or adjacent to the list of ingredients, in type size that is no smaller than the type size used for the list of ingredients. For Ingredient Listing (21 CFR 101.4 example: (a) Ingredients should be listed out in descending order of predominance. 420 LEGAL NEWS:

SEATTLE SAYS NO

TO SPEED WEED SHELLY EVANS STAFF EDITOR If you have a delivery service in Seattle, you may want to pay close attention to what’s to come next in your legislature. It was announced this past month that there will be no tolerance of delivery services in Seattle due to the number of unlicensed and illegal delivery services. If you own a dispensary that has a license even you ,unfortunately, are not safe. The delivery of marijuana is - in Seattle right now - very illegal. If you have a delivery service, and you are publicly advertising, it might be a good time to put the kibosh on that. Twenty eight percent of the marijuana industry - according to the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis board - is “black market”. Legal retailers suspect it is the overwhelming majority and because they feel that black-market companies are making business harder for licensed businesses to stay afloat. Ultimately, this is about money. Government money. In the time that cannabis has been legalized in Washington, it has generated a whopping 65 million dollars in tax revenue. In the time that cannabis has been legalized in Washington, it has generated a whopping 65 million dollars in tax revenue. The governmental powers-that-be, would like it to remain profitable. As a cannabis business owner in Washington, you need to be incredibly business savvy. Make sure you know and are adhering to the laws set in place by the WA government, and if you are running a delivery service - consider putting it on hiatus for a while. Not having been aware when they come knocking - that the service your dispensary offers is illegal won’t protect you from the coming wave of crackdowns (which are starting with publicly advertised delivery services). Understanding the red tape can help you navigate the legal realities of being in the cannabis industry, and protect your business from being shut down. The state’s efforts aren’t all negative though. In fact, Attorney Pete Holmes of Seattle stated that while there will be many enforcement steps to protect the interest of big government - he has already drafted legislature (to be approved by state government) that would introduce a “pilot program” allowing dispensaries to legally make deliveries. The red tape is there, but following it will help keep you in business, and help keep the medicating population of Washington very happy. Review the law. Review your practices, and medicate and promote medicating consciously. 76
