LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
ISSUE NO. 29
Letter
from the
Editor
As we approach the holidays, it is a time of year where we reflect on the past year and contemplate on the things we are grateful for. I recently fell sick bringing me to the point of near death, and never before in my life did I think I would be so grateful just to be alive. I knew ambition, happiness, perseverance, stillness, acceptance and drive, but only now do I know what it’s like to have extreme gratitude just to be able to breath, to be able to drink water and to be able to eat solid food. Life is fragile and short. If you don’t have your health, you have nothing at all. I want to thank every single person that contributed and helped with the Infused Expo in October. The support system around me, my friends at Women Grow, the vendors, speakers and attendees made the event a great success in education and networking. I truly could not have done it without the help of everyone involved, especially Keiko Beatie. My mission and journey in cannabis is to educate, spread the word, knowledge and light on the benefits of the amazing plant known as cannabis sativa. It is a mission and calling that many have heard me say along the way, “Cannabis chose me, I didn’t choose cannabis.” There have been many ups and downs, and I am filled with overwhelming gratitude for those that have stood by my side and supported the cause along the way.
The future of cannabis is here. Cannabis will eventually positively impact and change our entire way of life. One day, there will be a generation that never knew what it was like for cannabis to be illegal. One day, our roads, infrastructure and fuel will all be made of hemp, and petroleum products will be a thing of the past.
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
It is time to learn, share and grow. Finding your place in the cannabis industry may not be easy if you’re just getting in now, but we are witnessing the first new industry emerge since the tech boom 30 years ago.

This is an exciting time to be alive, and I am so grateful to be alive. I thank everyone for their continued readership and support for Edibles List Magazine and EdiblesList.com. We founded our company to help self-regulate an industry that had no regulations. Now that day is finally here. Have a safe a Happy Holiday Season! B. Le Grand

With the stigma of cannabis finally beginning to subside and legalization taking place, the revolution and movement is indeed making a difference in our society today.

Veterans Cannabis Group
Advocating for Change B. Le Grand
Aaron Augustis joined the Army in 1998, and was already a 22 year old sergeant in the when he went to Iraq in 2003, just six weeks after the initial invasion. He spent a total of five and a half years in the military and was released just before Christmas of that year. After returning to the states, he tried going back to school but quickly dropped out of all his classes, bought a surfboard, met a girl, and smoked a whole lot of pot. Once Aaron was home, it wasn't long before he realized where he was, where he had been, and what he had done. The memories, feelings, and emotions he'd kept bottled inside in order to be a leader in a combat zone, came flooding back. "You can't show any weakness. Nothing is familiar to you. The only thing I was sure of was that the sun sets in the West, and the constellations were in the sky. There are so many feelings and sources of stress you deal with but can't express. All those feelings have to come out, and they come in great waves. Without cannabis, I would have thoughts and feelings I couldn't control and would start crying. Smoking cannabis allows me to calm down and be present. I know that I'm home, and there aren't bombs on the side of the road, and I don't need a weapon to go to the store." Aaron didn't connect with the Veterans Administration until 2011. It wasn't until being laid off from his job in 2014 as a financial advisor in San Francisco that he actually had the time to get into counseling, and decided what he really wanted to do was begin meeting with other veterans with similar experiences using cannabis to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. "There wasn't anything established in Marin or Sonoma. I thought: Veterans, Cannabis - I can do this!" That is how and why Aaron decided to create Veteran's Cannabis Group. "If you're a combat veteran with PTSD, you should be able to get a prescription for medical marijuana. We're an educational resource network and support group for veterans using cannabis. That's the big picture. The veteran issue may help deschedule or reschedule cannabis. The VA is a federal entity, and should help us. Do some research. Educate people, and educate yourself with the facts. Veterans cannot be denied their benefits if they use cannabis." Contact if you want to help. Q&A
TALKING TOPICALS with Gar Gar Souders, cannatopics.com
Dear Gar, I get migraine headaches at work sometimes, can a topical help? - Shawna Los Angeles, CA Hi Shawna, A topical salve could be just what you are looking for. Salves are often used for migraines by applying a small amount to temples and back of neck. One of the amazing things about infused topicals is their ability to bring relief without the head high -- great for work! Hi Gar, I am an amputee and have daily pain. Is there anything that might help that I can use on a daily basis? -Rick Chico, CA Hi Rick, Strong infused topical creams have shown great success for amputees. These products can be applied as needed for pain and muscle spasms with no side effects. Dear Gar, I am a breast cancer patient and am currently taking a Phoenix Tears Oil daily. Are there any topicals that I can add? -Jessica Auburn, CA Hi Jessica, Breast cancer patients can use a high THC cream during the day and an external oil based tincture at night. In addition to your internal oil, which uses the body's CB1 cannabinoid receptor system, the topicals will use the CB2 system to provide even more cannabinoids to the body.
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
Dear Gar, I hear a lot lately about "whole plant" medicine. Does this apply to topicals as well? -Mary Denver, CO Hi Mary, The term "whole plant" absolutely applies to topicals. All of the components of the cannabis plant work together in a natural harmony. When one is removed, the effect changes. There are hundreds of different chemical components in a cannabis plant. These cannabinoids, terpenoids, proteins, sugars and many more, all interact perfectly with each other, so while using a single component of the plant may bring relief, the results are usually much better when the "whole plant" is used When using whole plant formulations, all parts of the plant are utilized in various amounts; including sticks, small flowers, trim and even small leaves. This creates a synergistic effect, bringing the ultimate overall medicinal value to the topical. This is also called the "Entourage Effect". Gar Souders has been researching the effects and formulations of Cannabis Infused Topicals for over a decade. He is the Founder of CannaTopics, and also a member of several pro-Cannabis Organizations. EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

Infused Expo Recap Keiko Beatie
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
It started out as a vision that would educate, inspire, and network the growing community of edibles, and it finally came to fruition this past October in downtown LA. On Sunday, October 23rd the inaugural Infused Expo took place in Los Angeles at the historically majestic Casa Vertigo. With speakers, panels, cooking demos, and an expo floor featuring some of the largest and up and coming edible and topical companies on the market, the Infused Expo made its debut to the public.
16
Being labeled as the first of its kind within the cannabis industry as an expo and conference focused on the growing industry of edibles and topicals, the 2016 Los Angeles Infused Expo had all the makings of a game changing event. Some of the most iconic names in the cannabis community came out to support this venture with passion and true insight. Created by B Le Grand, Publisher and CEO of The Edibles List, and Keiko Beatie of Women Grow OC, OC Norml, and Hemp Radio, it was an undertaking that was a labor of love and commitment. “Education and information on edibles and topicals are needed at this time within the industry”, said Keynote speaker and Master Grower Ed Rosenthal, whose new line of edible “Stardust” was unveiled at the Expo. Other speakers who made an impression upon the hundreds of attendees were Maya Elisabeth of Whoopi & Maya™, Bob Eschino of Incredibles - the top selling edible in Colorado, Elvy Musikka - the Federal Marijuana Patient, Ed Breslin of Xternal Topicals, and Academy Award
nominated actor and cannabis activist Eric Roberts. The panels that drew attention were: ‘Packaging and Labeling for The Future’ with Bob Eschino, Tomar Grassiany, and Wayne Neilsen of Zuma Print, ‘Testing for Tomorrow’ with Mallory Speakman and Kareem Kassen of SC Labs, ‘Branding and Marketing for The Future’ with Wendy Rall of Budd Branding and Ed Breslin, ‘Minorities In Cannabis’ with Buck Angel, Dr. Brandie Cross of The Pot Lab, Scout Durwood of MTV’s “Mary + Jane”, Francis Schauwecker of Mary Jane University, and Steven Chang of Incredibles, and ‘Dosing and Cannabis Applications’ with Dr. Allen, Dr. Evans, and David Slocum of Mothers Nature Remedy. All were great educational panels that inspired and piqued the interest of guests at the Expo. Cooking Demos took place during the day by talented chefs Donna Collins of Global Infused Jams, Jellies and Sauces, Keira Fae Sumimoto of Weedmaps TV, Cheri Sicard of the Gourmet Cannabis Cookbook, and Dr. Raw Organics - an all natural cannabis infused candy company. Guests, if they had a doctor’s recommendation, were able to taste test the food presented with enthusiastic delight. In the Expo area, there were amazing brands that are getting ready to come forward to consumers with well tested, packaged, and marketed topicals, tinctures, and infused edibles. The options included: Incredibles, Stardust, CannaClear, Infused Edibles, To Whom It May Concern, Hashman Products, Dazey Hemp, Shaman Jellies, Jams and Sauces, Mother Nature’s Remedy, Tax Defense Partners, eCannaPay, Organically Yours, Hummingbird Farms, Mary Jane University, and Deviant Dabs, just to name a few of the exciting booth presentations. One tag line that was mentioned throughout the day by vendors that they couldn’t leave the booth because there were so many people seeking information! What a great problem to have at an event. It’s true; newcomers were on hand to learn, ask questions and soak it all in!

Interview by Keiko Beatie
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
Most people know Eric Roberts as an actor of many big and small screen presentations. But how much did we know about his cannabis connection? One of the most well-trained and schooled actors in Hollywood sits down with Edibles Magazine and shares how he initiated a self-imposed 1000 day rehab from cannabis and what he learned from the experience, plus, his life, love, and volcano.

1000 Days of Cannabis Self Prohibition
Eric Roberts is an East Coast boy, with high cheek bones and boyish good looks, and has been acting since he can remember, and loving the life he chose. Eric Anthony Roberts was born April 18, 1956 in Biloxi, Mississippi, to Betty Lou Bredemus, 1934-2015, and Walter Grady Roberts, 1933-1977. Both were at one time one-time actors and playwrights, who met while touring with a production of George Washington Slept Here, entertaining for the troops during the wartime.

C O V E R TEXT S T OHERE RY In 1963, Eric’s parents co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in Atlanta, Georgia, off Juniper Street in Midtown. They ran a children's acting school in Decatur, Georgia while they were expecting his younger sister Julia. Roberts has two younger sisters, Lisa and Julia, and his daughter Emma Roberts is well a known actress who has played opposite notable names such as Jennifer Aniston and Johnny Depp, making her major-film debut at age 10 in the 2001 drama Blow.
His career took off after a well-received performance in King of the Gypsies in 1978, for which he earned his first Golden Globe Award nomination. His second Golden Globe nomination came for his portrayal of Paul Snider in Star 80, co-starring Mariel Hemingway in 1983. Eric then followed up by receiving both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for his role in Runaway Train with Jon Voight in 1985.
Roberts has performed in over
250 films, and 200 small screen TV roles.
Now in a career spanning forty years, Roberts has performed in over 250 films, and 200 small screen TV roles as well as stage productions, including The Pope of Greenwich Village with Mickey Rourke and Daryl Hannah in 1984, The Dark Knight with Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger in 2008, and The Expendables with Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in 2010. His equally varied television work includes three seasons with the sitcom Less than Perfect, as well as recurring roles on the soap EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
With a vast array of roles that has taken Eric all over the world playing demanding parts, through it all he found solace in consuming cannabis as a form of relaxation and expansion, but he doesn’t utilize cannabis while acting. He is a well known performer with an impressive amount of training by some of the best in the industry. Eric studied in London for two years at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, then returned to the States and continued his studies at the American Academy in New York. He made his NY stage debut in "Rebel Women" in 1976 at age 20 and appeared in regional productions, once playing the newspaper boy in a production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" starring Shirley Knight and Glenn Close.

TEXT C O VHERE ER STORY Another World as a young boy in 1964, the NBC drama Heroes, a magic mushroom dealing version of himself on HBO’s Entourage, the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, and Brooklyn 99 on FOX. One role that I had the pleasure of seeing him in at the Sundance Film Festival back in 1996 was It’s My Party with Margaret Cho. It seems like this could have been a challenge, but Eric had such heart and compassion shine through in this tender story of a man dying with AIDS. I feel that the film and his role didn’t receive the notoriety it deserved because of the subject matter. In 1987, Roberts was arrested for possession and spent 36 hours in jail, pleaded guilty to harassment, and had all other charges dropped. In 2010, Roberts appeared as a cast member in the fourth season of the VH1 reality television series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew for dependency on medical marijuana. His wife Eliza convinced him that being on VH1 would introduce him to a new generation of fans and broaden his audience, and it worked. Eliza and Eric’s stepson Keaton Simons appeared to discuss the effects of drug use on their lives. Then came his commitment of 1000 Days of Self-Imposed Prohibition of Cannabis.
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
During this time, his relationships with his loved ones began to evolve for the better. Eliza, who is an actress as well and was featured in the popular cult classic Animal House, is Eric’s muse and inspiration. His Stepson Keaton Simons, who he has a heartfelt relationship with, became more open and honest during the prohibition.
20 18
Eric made it through Dr. Drew’s program, but after the days went by he realized he didn’t have an addiction and he wanted to prove to his love Eliza that Cannabis impacts his life in a positive way. Also to share how it is a medicine and should receive respect and understanding. Eliza does not partake in cannabis use at this time, by the way. The 1000 Days wasn’t difficult for Roberts, and it provided insight on how it affects his mind and body, and the integration of the medical benefits. Roberts is very spiritual in his life, and his compassion for fellow humankind is warm, genuine, and infectious. After the 1000 Day Self-Imposed Prohibition came to an end, a realization came to all parties, Eliza, Keaton, and Eric, that cannabis is a medicine and using it was a positive infusion into Eric’s life. C O V E R TEXT S T OHERE RY Keaton was now infusing too, as he is a talented musician with the group “BACKBONE”, and his understanding now incorporates cannabis in assisting in creating music and art. BACKBONE is an incredible fusion of funk, rock, jazz, and ska. Eric Roberts is in the works to be a Cannabis Entrepreneur and is developing a line of edibles and other needed products in the cannabis community. His name as a supporter could assist the acceptance to the masses as he has grown and realized its importance. Most noteworthy is that Eliza has come to the positive understanding as well; that cannabis can heal, cure, and create health and wellbeing, and support balance within one’s life - just as it has done for Eric and her son Keaton. His favorite method of medicating is edibles, and vaporizing, both flower and Co2 concentrate, and he loves Sativa. His favorite strains are Green Crack and Sour Diesel.
Many thoughts of gratitude to the cheerleaders Eliza The Muse and Bentley the Dog for being kind, warm and inviting to share their support to Eric and lots of furry hugs. Most of all to Eric, for sharing his journey of cannabis awareness and how prohibition is no longer
needed, personally and publicly. Eric is keen on a pasta, pizza sauce, and the belief that food and cannabis can bring people and families together. Indeed as the plant has brought more love and understanding together for this family. Thank you Eric! May you continue to act, enjoy, love, and vaporize!

Let’s be on the lookout for the line of products coming from Eric Roberts as his 1000 Days of Prohibition was not lost. Having his close family understand, grow in unity, and support his efforts for the expansion of cannabis awareness is appreciated by us all in the community. We need to continue to blend the mainstream and have a person of Eric’s caliber and character come out in support is a step on the path of no more prohibition and access for all. Seek out the music of BACKBONE with Keaton Simons and his musical partner Adam Vadel, you will be melodically enlightened.

MUSIC FEATURE TEXT HERE
BACKBONE Steps into the Ganja Zone
Patrick Ian Moore Adam Vadel and Keaton Simons both already had impressive musical resumes back when they first met, having worked alongside powerhouse performers like Pharcyde, Gnarls Barkley, Carlos Santana, Joe Cocker, Iggy Pop, Snoop Dogg, and Chris Cornell, just to name a few. So it seemed to them like a good idea to get together and form a new style of musical collaboration, and when that happened - BACKBONE was born!
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
What is BACKBONE exactly? The answer is many things, but primarily BACKBONE is a band that closely resembles something more along the lines of funkadelic performance art with a rotating cast of collaborators from every musical genre creating an experience of groovy and moving sounds. Aiding Keaton and Adam in this process is their good friend, iconic American bass player, and fellow artist, Lonnie Marshall. Lonnie is perhaps best known as the frontman for Weapon of Choice, but has also played with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fishbone, Tone Loc, Les Claypool, George Clinton, Joe Strummer, and Ice Cube. Marshall also teaches guitar workshops at The Silverlake Conservatory of Music, and has been doing so since it was originally founded by Flea in 2001.
22
Keaton Simons isn’t a stranger to the world of entertainment. His mother Eliza played the role of Brunella in Animal House, directed by John Landis in 1978. She was pregnant with Keaton at the time, so technically he was the youngest cast member of the legendary comedy. Eliza’s husband and Keaton’s stepfather is Oscar nominated actor Eric Roberts, and his step-sister Emma and aunt Julia are established in the industry as well. When Adam Vadel and Simons met, they became as close as brothers in no time at all, and began to form a new musical family of their own. In addition to music, the two men shared another passion that would only serve to bring them both closer together; Cannabis! Adam and Keaton had both been smoking cannabis recreationally and using it medicinally for years before they met. After getting to know one another, they discovered that they shared not only a love of cannabis, but also a love of using the plant to aid in the creative process, and
to help them each reach new levels creatively by freeing their minds with the use of marijuana. Simons said: “When people ask me if I’m high right now, the answer is always yes and no. Have I been smoking, and is my mind free, and am I creating? Yes! Am I all fucked up and too stoned to function? No. Infusing with cannabis medicinally unlocks new levels in the mind’s creativity.” Adam added, “When you begin creating, and then continue to smoke and use cannabis each time you reach a new level or phase, you just keep positively progressing. It’s the same with making music, playing video games, making art, or surfing. Score a goal, smoke a bowl, and ride the wave. It’s beautiful.”
BACKBONE is making more than just music. Their creative endeavors also extend to on-the-air roundtable discussions, philosophical debates, and cannabis fueled conversations with their weekly late night web-series ‘BACKBONE Ganja Zone” on Z420 TV. On Ganja Zone they talk about anything and everything related to marijuana and music, while also receiving visits from friends in both industries. You can catch the show live on Wednesday nights at 9PM PST on z420.tv. Recently they performed at The Infused Expo and even made an appearance at The Edibles List Magazine Booth at The Los Angeles Comic-Con. You can also see BACKBONE play live at Hotel Cafe on November 25th. Hardcore fans are called BackBoners. (They wanted that in print.) 100 Pounds of Cannabis Seized from Un-Licensed Dispensary
LC Squared There are some entrepreneurs taking high risks in Southern California. On the morning of October 26th, San Diego Police executed an hours-long raid of Outer Reach Meds which is the 13th unlicensed shop to be searched in the city. A team of 20 officers have combed the entire dispensary as well as the adjacent two businesses, a smoke shop and a liquor store. The contraband that was found included 100 lbs of cannabis, large amounts of edibles and concentrates, an unspecified amount of cash and three firearms. Upon this find, Police Lieutenant Matt Novak confirms that, “This is, by far, the most product we've gotten. While no arrests have been made, police have detained two employees during the raid. Detectives also believe that the owner of the dispensary also owns the smoke shop and liquor store, which prompted their own searches.
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
Police say they raided the surrounding businesses because they believe they are connected as far as ownership and leases. The businesses involved in the raid are Cabana Liquor, Palm City Smoke Shop, and Outer Reach Meds.
24
According to the San Diego Police Department, the narcotics unit is working with the City Attorney's Office to investigate "all illegal marijuana dispensaries operating within the City of San Diego." Outer Reach Meds is one of about 50 identified unlicensed dispensaries in San Diego; some closed up shop as soon as police executed search warrants. As of now, 22 dispensaries remain under investigation. EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

EDITORS PICKS
PRODUCT REVIEWS Dr. Raw Organics THC Tincture. California. Patrick Ian Moore. Dr. Raw Organics’ THC Tincture is a small bottle filled with powerful medicine. One ½ fluid ounce, 15 ML, contains a total of 210 MG of THC and 15 MG of CBD. An eyedropper of the liquid has a dose of around 10 MG of THC, so 1-3 of those is a good serving, depending on your tolerance. This is potent stuff, so don’t overdo it. The taste can definitely be described as “strong”, like a shot of wheatgrass infused with grain alcohol, but the flavor isn’t exactly important with a product like this. If you’re brave enough, taking it directly on or under the tongue is a fast way to medicate, and it’s not terrible - just seriously medicinal tasting. I also added the tincture to some pumpkin spice coffee with cream, and also to some spicy Thai coconut soup. The taste was undetectable and it was a simple and effective way to infuse both items. The ingredients are simple: organic cannabis, and organic cane alcohol. Like all the products made by Dr. Raw, it’s an all natural way to medicate and comes in delightfully old school styled packaging with a classic looking aesthetic. This THC tincture is an easy and practical way to take your medicine on the go, and in most any situation. Once again - it’s a very potent potion, so use responsibly and have fun. Warning: If you have an intolerance to alcohol, this may not be the tincture for you.
Dr. Raw Organics Raw Bites. California.
In addition to being a relatively healthy cannabis cookie, these raw bites taste incredibly good. If you’ve ever eaten really well made bakeless chocolate oat cookies, that is very much what the raw bites taste like. The ingredients are all natural and include oats, blue agave nectar, cinnamon, roasted peanuts, sea salt, flax seed, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, coconut flakes, and cannabis infused coconut oil. When it all comes together in this marijuana mixture, the flavor is robustly layered in the best of ways and the different components play very well together and provide a unique medicating experience with great taste. Start by eating half of a raw bite, and see how you feel 30 minutes later. The Dr. Raw Organics products feel stronger than some other edibles labeled the same strength, so try to go slow. Tucked away in the beautiful Willamette Valley, Oregon is Genesis Pharms. This family run cannabis business is guided by the belief in the power of cannabis to help and to heal. Sean and Kassy Beeman are husband and wife who have a mission to assist those in need of medicinal assistance with cannabis. From growing the plant, to creating new innovative products and hiring veterans who have given their service to our country, this is the chosen path to success, health, and well-being that Sean and Kassy are creating with Genesis Pharms.
Sean’s doctor took a biopsy and declared his liver cured.
Genesis Pharms began their journey in 2005, when Sean was diagnosed with chronic Hepatitis C. He started on a quest to find a product that would alleviate his illness. For the next 5 years, Sean tried most any product he could find available in both Western and Eastern medicine, to included pharmaceutical, natural, and herbal. Nothing seemed to work. Then came the startling reality that his physician shared; Sean’s life was in jeopardy. He had possibly 3 to 5 years before the Hepatitis C would take his life. Sean learned about the whole plant process of cannabis and had reservations about attempting this for himself. He called the legendary Rick Simpson, and in speaking with him he learned all about the how the liver is able to heal itself. There was no need for fear and the only loss was going to be the disease from Sean’s body when using the cannabis oil.
What has transpired after Sean’s recovery is that Genesis has grown into a compassionate community of like minded individuals, generating top quality cannabis products made with love and care. An important aspect of outreach is Genesis Pharms hiring and supporting Veterans whose service to our country has been marred by returning home with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome or PTSD.
Rick’s words inspired Sean to make his first batch of Whole Plant Concentrate Oil and began to ingest it daily. In the first 90 days, he lost 100 pounds, as this was part of the process of cleansing the body of years of built up toxins. In these first months Sean felt an amazing transformation of his health and healing taking place. Only 11 months later, EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
Sean and Kassy soon knew they had the knowledge and success to share the herb’s capabilities with those in need. They created a path to educate, support, and provide compassion by utilizing cannabis oil introduced by Rick Simpson. No more pain and suffering, and this is how Genesis Pharms was born.

They even have a “Special” intimacy tincture for those who want to create a romantic moment. Genesis Pharms practices sustainability and a holistic approach to plant production and are dedicated to growing practices that promote soil health, conserve natural resources, and prevent environmental degradation. They are proud to be growing on land that is certified by Oregon Tilth, an Accredited Certifying Agent (ACA) for the USDA’s National Organic Program. Sean and Kassy use the same techniques that nature has used for millions of years. In nature, plants feed from the extradites of bugs and the decomposition of organic material. A lot of
the decomposition is done with different forms of mycelium. Genesis continues to naturally replenish the soil with crops grown on the property. Leaving the soil unturned allows for the spread of mycelium between all plants. This allows the plants to share vital nutrients, as well as providing an effective means of water control. It is the mission of Genesis Pharms to optimize the farm and make it fully self-sufficient. Utilizing the latest technology and Mother Nature, they’ll soon have a farm that feeds itself! As they strive to procure most everything from within a 20 mile radius of the farm they feel they are supporting the community. Locally sourced plants have adapted to the soils and weather patterns of the Oregon Willamette Valley, making it a smooth transition to the fields of Genesis Pharms. With the goals of assisting those in need, supporting Vets by hiring within the company and sourcing products locally Genesis Pharms is on an admiral path. With plans to develop an outreach program in Washington, Nevada and California, we hope you don’t have to wait too long before you can experience the benefits from the oil and products from the honorable Genesis Pharms. How to Play it Safe with Infused Beverages Rachel Zemser, cannabisculinologist.com
There are many new and exciting cannabis infused food products on the market and cannabis companies are getting more competitive with highly processed products like pressed mints, healthy meal replacement bars and probiotic chocolate. One category that has been very slow to emerge is the ready to drink (RTD) beverage category. RTD beverages are not commonly produced by cannabis entrepreneurs because they either require refrigeration (not available in most dispensaries) or an understanding of thermal processing to ensure a room temperature shelf stable finished product that won’t support yeast, mold or the deadly anaerobic spore forming pathogen Clostridium Botulinum.
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
The methods used to create shelf stable products are not intuitive or simple to execute. They require a deep understanding about bacteria and food safety and it’s crucial that the right process be implemented properly to ensure that no one gets sick from consuming contaminated products. Uninformed entrepreneurs often think that adding citric acid or lowering the pH is enough to ensure product safety but this is not the case. A unique time and temperature “scheduled process” that is product specific must be established by a food safety professional with experience in food and beverage processing.
32
There are multiple ways in which a beverage can be thermally processed. The methods include pasteurization, HPP (high pressure processing), aseptic packaging, hot fill, and cold fill + preservatives. It’s important for a beverage entrepreneur to be familiar with all the options because the same beverage formulation will come out dramatically different in flavor depending on how it is processed.
Hot Fill/Pasteurized Beverages: Beverages that are hot filled (195F +) have a long 1-year and longer shelf life, but they are “cooked” so the top notes and flavors are muted and they won’t have a fresh beverage vibe. High Pressure Processing: This very expensive method uses pressure (not heat) to kill off the bacteria, The final flavor tastes like a fresh pressed juice and it has a 30 to 60 day shelf life. Products like Evolution (Starbucks) and Harmless Harvest (Whole Foods) are examples of this type of processing. The retail cost is usually more than $8 dollars for a 12-oz serving. Aseptic Filling: A very fast heat and fill of product into a sterilized container. The flavor is not damaged as much as Hot fill, but it still is “cooked”. Examples of this are boxed nut milks in the shelf stable section of the supermarket. Cold Fill With Preservatives: Beverages that are very low in fruit (less than 10%) can be cold filled into a package and only use preservatives to inhibit bacteria. These products are not expensive because there is no heat to process the product and it has very little fruit juice in there.
Beverages can be dangerous if they are processed incorrectly. Products that are not properly heated, have a high pH (above 4.6), are “sealed up” and contain vegetable purees could support deadly pathogens which can cause serious illness or even death. Do not attempt to figure this process out on your own. Hire a food scientist, microbiologist or “processing authority” to assist.

You coined the phrase, “it’s not what’s between your legs that defines you!” You not only inspire people to think outside the box, you are re-defining gender and educating an entire generation on the fluidity of sexuality and identity politics. How do you identify and why? I identify as a man, but obviously my own definition of a man, because I still have my vagina. I believe that you are the only person that can define yourself and no one else. It was a lesson I learned when I chose not to have penis surgery or what we call "bottom surgery" in the trans world. I always saw myself as a man. And so when I had the opportunity to transition to a man it was exactly what I did. The great thing about today is that we have so many different ways to transition and you can now just be!
34
Are you a weed smoker? Yes I am an out and proud user of cannabis. 28 or so years ago, I got sober from drugs and alcohol. My problems with substances I have since discovered came from my issues with my gender. Once I became me and through years of working on my mental health I have finally found peace. I am a very hard working man and travel the world spreading my message of self love, with that come sleepless nights and some anxiety. I started to use sleeping pills to sleep. But they were making me feel like I was using drugs and hated that feeling. My friend suggested cannabis as a natural sleeping aid. WOW it is amazing! I never feel hungover or in any way like
I am going to go back to using. I have been using cannabis now for 5 years and have never even thought of drinking or using drugs. I’ve heard you speak publically about the significant connection between the use of cannabis and having a positive body image. It may seem like a bit of a stretch to connect the two; marijuana and body image, can you clarify? For sure I can. Within the transgender community we have lots of anxiety, PTSD, mental health and just plain old selfdoubt and detachment from ourselves. What I have found with the use of cannabis is that it helps me to reconnect to myself when I am feeling low. What I have also found is that there is a large use of prescription drugs being administered to my community for all the things I spoke of above. I am not a fan of narcotics and think that most of the time they can be very damaging for long term use. They just put you in a state but don’t give you a place to explore how you feel, where I think cannabis does. That said I am not saying cannabis or narcotics can work for everyone or don’t work for everyone. What I want is to start dialogue around using the alternative such as cannabis for example with PTSD. Marijuana consumption has taken various popular forms; there are edibles, vaporizing, bongs, water pipes, pipes, joints, blunts, which is your preferred method? My favorite is the vape because of travel as well as using edibles, which my favorite is chocolate. But sometimes I just love a good old fashion joint. Do you think our current presidential candidates are talking enough about marijuana legalization, and Trans Equality? No way! No one is. We need to get cannabis fully legalized and get people to understand why it is important. We are being blocked by big pharmaceuticals. Cannabis is the new way to help people start to reconnect with their bodies and minds. We need to remove narcotics from the table and start to help people see the benefits of cannabis. This is why I have become public about my use. I don’t want to look like a hypocrite and when you are visible this creates change! On your social media, I frequently see you post the hashtag, #tranpa, what does that mean? #tranpa is just a way of expressing that I am an elder in the trans community. I had my transition 20 years ago. I have seen lots and lots. I mentor many LGBTQ youth and so they call me, “tranpa”. You can learn more about Buck Angel at: www.buckangel.com/buck-off

California’s Conundrum: The Environmental Impact of Widespread Marijuana Cultivation
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
L. C. Squared
36
Cannabis cultivation is an entirely brave new world for California. No venture is without its obstacles and perils. While the potential legalization of recreational cannabis due to Proposition 64 may yield a bounty of benefits for the state and its citizens alike, it may indeed come at a dear cost due to potential risks mass cultivation may pose to the environment.
Marijuana Regulation. This gives Southern California growers an advantage because local municipalities and utilities work hand in hand to develop the best practices for environmentally friendly cultivation.
As the vote to potentially pass Prop 64 draws closer, California lawmakers are currently at work drafting legislation to control cannabis production in order to lessen its impact on the environment. By next year, the California Department of Food and Agriculture will release new water regulation laws that will allow cannabis growers to store water. In addition to identifying the source of their water, they must gain a permit from the newly formed Bureau of Medical
On another note, the Coachella Valley faces an issue in which there is a lack of necessary infrastructure in order to cultivate cannabis. Soulliere worries that even though residents in desert cities ration their water, there’s a lack of a necessary system in order to feed potential growing sites. This adds burden to the cultivators, as they alone will have to pay money to expand any existing infrastructure.
Growers in SolCal are quickly seizing this opportunity as Desert Hot Springs has already received over 50 applications for grow sites ranging in size from 225,000 square feet to 1 million square feet. Naturally, these facilities will require considerable amounts of water, but Desert Hot Springs officials are already ahead on planning as they are collaborating with the Mission Springs Water District to ensure that all municipalities are ready to act once cultivation centers are set up. The administrative officer of the Mission Springs Water District assures that the facilities will be managed properly, saying, “We have yet to receive applications for facilities that are not in areas that were previously developed or disturbed.” In 2014, Desert Hot Springs voted to use undeveloped land filled with abandoned buildings, all of which would be perfect for growing cannabis in order to draw in big money for tax revenue for the struggling community.
Meanwhile, large-scale cultivators in Northern California are taking heat for not taking measures to prevent environmental damage. According to a research team led by an Ithaca College professor and a UC Cooperative Extension specialist,
EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
TEXT HERE EDUCATION they found that Northern California’s Emerald Triangle, which is arguably the world’s biggest pot producer, threatens the habitats of two species of fish. An environmental scientist at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife studied both of the threatened fish, the Chinook salmon and the steelhead trout. He found that the regular watering of the cannabis crops diminishes the waterways, putting the fish at unnecessary risk. He explains that the, “stream flow from this water-intensive activity is likely to have lethal to sublethal effects on state and federally listed salmon and steelhead trout and will cause further decline of sensitive amphibian species.”
To prove their point, the research team used Google Earth’s high-resolution satellite imagery to locate and map outdoor grow and greenhouse sites. By recreating crop clusters in a new map, they found that most of the production sites were dangerously close to important watersheds. This means that not only were growers diverting precious water away from the local wildlife, they were pumping pesticides and other chemicals into the ground which could potentially contaminate the habitat. The study recommends that grow sites should settle in areas with better access to roads, gentler slopes, and ampler water resources in order to reduce the threat posed against an environment. This means that future cannabis policy should take into consideration land-use planning in order to minimize any repercussions cannabis cultivation may have on the environment. However, it’s not entirely the fault of the farmers, the lack of peer-reviewed studies on cannabis growing hindered the understanding of the amount of impact the crops potentially had on the environment. This article was sponsored by ilovegrowingmarijuana.com
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
The average cannabis plants takes at least 6 gallons of water a day, while the Emerald Triangle conveniently takes its water from unregulated streams and watersheds. If cultivation sites remain unchecked and unregulated, several species including the fish could face lethal consequences. The researchers conclude that this creates a potential conflict between the rapidly growing cannabis industry as well as the safety and welfare of protected species and their habitat which makes this a federal and local-level environmental concern.

Catholic Church Donates $850,000 to Fight Cannabis Legalization L.C. Squared
As Election Day draws closer, the Catholic Church once again makes its presence known by unsurprisingly pledging its efforts to defeat cannabis legalization. In Massachusetts, the Boston Archdiocese donated $850,000 in support of the Campaign for a Safe and Healthy Massachusetts which looks to defeat Question 4, the initiative that would legalize recreational cannabis for the state. This is, by far, the biggest contribution to the anti-cannabis campaign, marking a 50% increase in funding. A spokesperson for the Archdiocese explains, “It reflects that the archdiocese holds the matter among its highest priorities. It’s a recognition that, if passed, the law would have significantly detrimental impacts on our parishes, our ministries.” Opponents of Question 4 use the slippery slope argument of cannabis being a gateway drug and exacerbating the opioid epidemic while also being dangerous to children. Proponents for the initiative assure that the market would be safer and betterregulated while generating new taxes for the state.
Edibles Magazine Issue 29
The Catholic Church isn’t alone in their stance against legalizing, the Mormon Church has also joined the fray in which leaders have sent letters to their members in Arizona, California and Nevada. The aforementioned states as well as Massachusetts and Maine will all be deciding on whether or not to legalize recreational cannabis while Arkansas, Florida, Montana and North Dakota will vote on initiatives for medical cannabis. Unfortunately, the churches seem to be preaching to the choir as public opinion is largely in favor of legalization. In Massachusetts, the support for Question 4 is at 49% over the 42% who are opposed. According to a Quinnipiac University survey, 54% of registered U.S. voters say they support legalization, marking this an all-time high of support. We will see if the supporters will stick to their words come Election Day. EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
