REMARKABLE WOMEN

IN CANNABIS In honor of Women’s History Month, Edibles List Magazine would like to present you some of the most Remarkable Women in Cannabis.

PIONEERS PAVING THE WAY

When we first decided to do an issue dedicated to women, I never realized what I would come to learn about this industry. Currently, the perception is that the marijuana industry is male dominated; however, after getting to know the women behind our business, I found that is simply not the case. Cannabis is one of those rare things that does not discriminate and is all inclusive. More and more women are flocking to our industry and I am so thrilled to see how many strong, driven and truly noteworthy females have found their way into the world of cannabis. I for one, would never in a million years have thought that I would end up here. The overwhelming consensus of the women we featured, is that: we did not choose cannabis, cannabis chose us. I also did not think that women would feel as though it is an asset to be a female in weed versus other industries, and very few women reported actually having negative experiences in this industry. I wish I could say

the same. One of the first cannabis events attended, after leaving the fashion industry, was CannaCon in Seattle. I was unpleasantly catcalled on the showfloor in front of other vendors by a man who was a bit miffed because I would not give him my number. Now, a year later it is rare to see that behavior. Thankfully, the industry has grow up in a year.

In honor of Women’s History Month and We Love Cannabis Year (Okay, I made that up , guilty!) Edibles List Magazine would like to present these Remarkable Women in Cannabis. Though it is no surprise that women have such an affinity to marijuana seeing as the plant itself that produces the flower in which we smoke, vape, eat, etc. is in fact a female. There are many more amazing ladies in the weed world, but we could not list them all. Here are a few that we are sincerely inspired to know. I cannot wait to see who makes the list next year and remember ladies in the wise words of

KYMBER WARD Beyonce, ‘We have to step up and take the lead!’ Kymber is the Director of Sales and a Staff Editor for Edibles Magazine. Pre-cannabis she was an International account executive for a high end dress company as well as the licensing coordinator for a premium denim company. Kymber came into the cannabis industry just over a year ago and she won’t be leaving any time soon. Though her motives for entering this industry were financial promise, it only took one patient story to change it all for her. Now, she works to further cannabis awareness and hemp education through building strategic partnerships in the cannabis indusry.

JAZMIN HUPP CEO, Women Grow

KRYSTAL & CHELSEA

“I love the real meaning of feminism and I am Co-Owners, Yummi Karma angry the word has been f***d with by people who don’t believe that women and men “We love being women and we love selling products for women.” should be equal.” THE INVIGORATING ENTREPRENEUR - Jazmin Hupp is the dynamic CEO of Women Grow, a professional networking organization that invites women into the legal cannabis industry. They operate monthly meetings in 44 cities in the United States and Canada, after only eighteen months of being in operation. Jazmin played an integral part in the early branding and marketing pushes for Women Grow that has made the organization such a success today. Her entrepreneurial background is in media, tech and retail. Jazmin has been a founding member of six startups and explained that half of them had failed. She even offered up some sound advice to young entrepreneurs, “You should look for other entrepreneurs who have failed previously. They will be better at what they do based on having had something that didn’t work out in the past.” Jazmin has been a cannabis user since the age of sixteen; she grew up in a cannabis culture where using it was safe, and weed became an alternative to alcohol for her. She is the daughter of a jazz musician – hence Jazmin with a ‘z’. After growing up in Southern Oregon, she went on to college in New York and quickly realized the cannabis was not a readily available option for most people. We had a great conversation about being the CEO of a female company, she even joked about how she is probably the person who gets hit on the least in this industry, due to her job. On a more serious note, she shed light on some of the issues that significantly hinder women from entering the industry, including the policies surrounding child protective services. She went on to explain that she has made the choice to not have children in order to continue her work without having to live in fear that her kids will be taken. Jazmin touched upon something that truly affects women in this industry and is continuing to keep women out which is simply unacceptable. I have to tell you, this woman is a treasure trove of advice and knowledge especially when it comes to entrepreneurship. She explained the art of effective communication, “There is a performance aspect to how I communicate, but that is because I value clear and effective communication. So, anytime you are communicating with someone you are performing in someway.” Jazmin was clearly meant to be an entrepreneur and leader. She has always had a hard time accepting things that are unfair. Her wisdom goes beyond her years and it probably has something to do with the failures she has had to overcome. She persevered and came out on top with Women Grow.

THE DYNAMIC DUO - Krystal and Chelsea Kitahara are the sister-duo behind this year’s Best Savory Edibles Winner, Yummi Karma. YK is a marijuana infused edible company specializing in products marketed to women including tinctures, chips, sauces and topicals. The Kitahara sisters were entrepreneurs from the start. “Way back in the day, we were the Cleaner Sisters. I would charge a dollar to vacuum, and would pay (younger sister) Chelsea to do it for ten cents,” explained Krystal. That business spirit only grew from there. The girls tried several small business ventures, even taking on the organic orange juice market during college. Krystal believed in the honor system, and left a refrigerated cart of unpasteurized juice for her classmates. “I was pleasantly surprised that everyone paid. I learned that having a quality product was important, and the customers would follow,” Krystal said. That philosophy is what fostered the growth of Yummi Karma. The sisters were active in the cannabis industry, and wanted to develop products that they saw lacking at their favorite collectives. “Basically anything that appealed to women. It seemed like everything was made for guys and we wanted to change that,” Chelsea explained. That’s exactly what they did, but it wasn’t easy. “The paradigms have shifted in the last two years. Being women in the cannabis industry wasn’t as accepted when we first started out. I would walk into a collective and the buyer would assume I was just a rep -- not the owner. Now, we get a lot more respect,” Krystal said. Respect has grown between the sisters too. Through the hard work and success of Yummi Karma, Krystal and Chelsea have learned that they balance each other out, especially in stressful situations. Chelsea said it best. “We’re like yin and yang. Krystal has strengths where I have weaknesses, and vice-versa. It all works out in the end.” While outgoing Krystal serves a more public role in the company, Chelsea, with a business degree from the University of Oregon, handles more of the back-office operational duties. Even though it is long hours, and never-ending meetings, the sisters enjoy the ride. “Being able to navigate through this process without massive amounts of red tape is freedom for an entreprenuer. We have been able to test things. We make a small batch, sell them to a few dispensaries, see how the move and then go from there.” I have had the pleasure of working with these two ladies for quite some time now and I have to admit their Drift Away tincture is something that stays in my makeup bag and goes everywhere with me. They are truly strong women, whose products are both tasty and effective.

CANNABIS AND THE MODERN WOMAN PAUL FIMBRES STAFF EDITOR

Anyone with a bit of common sense knows that cannabis isn’t limited to any one gender. Both men and women can benefit from the medicinal, therapeutic and recreational benefits that the plant is capable of providing. However, much of the conversation around cannabis in modern culture has revolved around male-centric or unisex concerns. The truth is there are a number of ways in which women uniquely benefit. This article is a look at opportunities and situations where, if you are a woman with these female-centric concerns, you can potentially find new opportunities or solutions for yourself. REASONS TO CONSUME Menstrual cramps can be a debilitating problem for some women. The related pain and duration of incidence can be enough to impair their ability to work and engage in day-to-day functions. As with any illness, society’s primary goal for patients is pain relief and improving function in society. In addition to its long-standing reputation as a general cramp pain reliever that female cannabis-consumers worldwide can attest to, efforts are being made into creating menstrual-cramp specific cannabis-based treatments. In addition to the standard ways

to relieve menstrual cramps using marijuana products, there are also efforts at targeted products like suppositories, such as the Foria Relief pill, which offers 60mg of THC and 10mg of CBD per dose (this is 6x the recommended dosage in most medical states, and such a product should only be used by those with experience and a tolerance). Both men and women can experience eating disorders, and we encourage anybody who fears they may have one to contact a medical professional directly. However, for those women looking to tilt their appetite a bit in one direction or another, cannabis can be just the thing they’re looking for. Cannabis usage has been tied to healthier body mass, as people who consume are more likely to fall into their respective medical body mass index (BMI). REASONS TO BE IN THE INDUSTRY The burgeoning cannabis industry is one that still seems to be driven by small business owners, a category where women and minorities are more likely to be represented and given a fair shake, and in growing numbers. In industries where monolithic businesses are allowed to thrive- see the beer industry, for example- power tends to

coagulate into the hands of a few powerful and extremely wealthy men. Thanks to the decentralized and young nature of this industry, the cannabis industry is one where women-owned businesses are managing to make a lot of headway. Considering that cannabis is already a billion dollar a year industry and growing, right now is the perfect time for women to get in and make their mark. Researchers from Washington State University found results that prove more women should be smoking more cannabis. While looking to find out the effectiveness of the plant’s pain-healing qualities over time, the university found that women are 30 percent more susceptible to the pain-healing effects of weed than their male counterparts. They also found that this just builds up their tolerance. After conducting experiments on female rats who have a menstrual cycle similar to that of women, the researchers found that compared to males, females needed to up their dose of THC after only 10 days of cannabis exposure. Since women get higher, they build a higher (pun intended) tolerance to it. Thus, the mystery behind why your stoner girlfriend can out smoke you is finally solved.

BRITTANY CONFER

MORIAH BARNHART

Director of Public Relations/Communications, Foria

“I am just happy to be out here helping women.”

“You are the leader of your team. Educate and empower yourself.”

THE SENSUAL ENTHUSIAST - Brittany Confer helped launch Foria alongside with Matthew Gerson in May 2014. She went to Penn State and received a degree in Communications. After that she lived in Miami for a few years, but ultimately ended up at a boutique public relations agency in Beverly Hills. One day Matthew walked in and began talking about cannabis, Brittany was immediately drawn to the project. Shortly thereafter, Brittany left her company and called Matthew to let him know, the very next day she started working at Foria.

THE MAINSTREAM CANNAMOM - Moriah Barnhart has been giving her daughter CBD to treat a brain tumor since 2013. She knew from the beginning that there were far too many children suffering because their parents did not know that cannabis might be a way to help. She explained that it was her own child’s diagnosis that made her see that there were so many other parents out there dealing with the same thing.

She explained that the statistic that there are currently 26 drugs approved by the FDA for male sexual pleasure, however, there was not a single one on the market for women. This notion drives Brittany and she explained, “For the first time I was not looking up at the clock wondering if it was 5 o’clock yet. From the very beginning, I was inspired to do anything that involves cannabis and increasing the quality of life for people. It’s been great!”

Moriah founded CannaMoms in 2014, the first and only organization that caters to helping children who need cannabis as a medicine. According to Moriah, CannaMoms began as a community and support system that transformed to informal lobbying. Moriah explained her motives behind founding CannaMoms, “I saw needs I had in my journey and all I could think about were the children. I wanted to make sure that no other parent would have to watch their children suffer because they didn’t know [cannabis could help].”

Clearly, Brittany found her calling and a home in an industry. She was one of the first in-house PR teams for a cannabis company. Foria Pleasure has quite possibly been the best marketing campaign in the industry; now Foria Relief has already reached over 200 press hits since their launch last month. Brittany and I went into a long conversation about how Foria’s success is really helping the industry, Once upon a time when you searched for cannabis and sex, it was really hard to find some without “XXX” attached to it, and there was absolutely no educational material on female sexual health. Now because of Foria, when you search those terms you find a multitude of webpages discussing cannabis and female sexual health.

CEO & Co-Founder, CannaMoms | Dahlia’s Botanicals, Founder | Founding Chair, Women Grow Tampa Bay | Founder, GrowBox

She also goes on to explain how she has used CannaMoms as a non-offensive way to bridge the gap between the cannabis industry and the mainstream. CannaMoms is a 501(c)(3) (pending), which has a board consisting of attorneys, physicians, politically connected and highly credentialed individuals. She knew that if CannaMoms was not set up correctly, they would never penetrate the minds of the mainstream individuals they are trying to reach. She described how she had to carve out her own place in the industry since there was nowhere that parents really fit in. She began working with Women Grow, which has become a resource by networking with other woman who have helped them in their quest to break the stigma of cannabis as a medicine for children. Moriah believes that in the early stages of the industry women were disregarded until some of the women based organizations began popping up. “There is something empowering about empowering other women,” said Moriah. Lastly, Moriah had some wise words for parents interested in cannabis as a medicine for their children, “Educate and empower yourself. We are taught to not question authority, but this is the first time in history where parent’s feelings and rights are coming before science. Trust yourself in that you know what’s best for your child.”

She explained to me that Foria is all about “increasing pleasure and diminishing pain, naturally”. Though a man created Foria, Matthew is very serious about helping and empowering women and Brittany has been a one helluvah of a soldier in that mission. She explained that she is extremely grateful to Matthew for bringing her into the company. Foria is literally changing the way that the mainstream media views our industry. Brittany explained to me that, “Being a woman in our industry, at this point in time, has been an advantage because the media has been so female focused lately. Media is hungry for stories in the industry and we [Foria] is happy to give it to them. It is through what we are doing and organizations like Women Grow that will inevitably help empower women to take over the industry.” For more information about Brittany Confer and Foria visit: ForiaPleasure.com IG: @ForiaPleasure Twitter: @ForiaPleasure Facebook: /Foria

to people to open up by the dump or by the railroad tracks and then clean up those areas. In Sacramento, we opened right next to an abandoned lot that was full of trash. We had it cleaned up within a week; we worked hard to give back to the whole community. We had a program at the dispensary where you donate your time or skill in trade for medicine. That was how we were able to offer so many free classes,” she proclaimed. We discussed some of the biggest differences between business in the beginning versus the industry we live in today, “Sometimes it’s disheartening to go to the business expos and hear the business people talking down about people who use cannabis, they are just in it for the money. It is also sad to see some of the marginalized people who were able to come into the industry in the beginning are now being pushed out,” said Aundre.

AUNDRE SPECIALE

Aundre is one of the original few still standing that braved the new world in order to create the cannabis industry we know today. If you are interested in learning more information about Aundre or her collectives please go to: CBCBBerkeley.com PhytologieOakland.com AbatinSacramento.com

Director, CBCB Berkeley Director, Phytologie Oakland Director, Abatin Wellness Center Sacramento

“Be fearless, choose love. Don’t discount love, volunteering and community activism because that will help get you support, it’s incredibly powerful.” THE COMPASSIONATE CAREGIVER - Aundre Speciale, Director of CBCB Berkeley, Phtyologie Oakland and Abatin Wellness Center in Sacramento, is one of the best souls I have had the pleasure of coming into contact with. She embodies one of the founding pillars of our industry, compassion. Back in the early 90’s, Aundre’s neighbor in Venice, California, was none other than the Hemperor himself, Jack Herer. Around the same time that The Emperor Wears No Clothes was being written, Herer was in the process of opening The Hemp Booth at Venice Beach, responsible for educating vistors about the benefits of hemp and cannabis. Aundre described the time Jack asked her to help him work the booth, “He asked if I wanted to work his hemp booth, I literally had to ask what hemp was. He explained that it was pot and my answer was ‘Hell yeah!’” From then on, Aundre was a permanent fixture in the Herer entourage. She lived and toured on the hemp bus along with him Captain Ed, the other hemp godfather and several loyalists to the cause. She explained that the bus toured around, mostly in California, to educate people about cannabis as a food, fuel, fiber, fun and medicine. “This was some time in the early 90s at the height of the “Just Say No!” and D.A.R.E. campaigns and pot, weed and marijuana were all dirty words,” explained Aundre. She went on to say that because of this uncertain time, they never knew what kind of situation they would be walking into at the next stop. “Sometimes we would be met with protestors, and other times we were met with rally’s in Jack’s honor,” she said. When her time with the hemp campaign ended, she still remained active among the cannabis activism scene. She served on the board of Marijuana Policy Project and was a founding member of Americans for Safe Access. She also spent time raising her family, until 2004 when she went full force back into the industry. She desired to create a place that she would want to go. A safe access point where the fundamental idea of compassionate caregiving was stretched further than what most were doing. Aundre opened up several dispensaries with a focus on working with the patients to give back to the community. Ultimately, she opened a fully female run dispensary in Sacramento for less than a $10,000 investment; however, she did things completely different than the typical dispensary. “We opened a community center next door that offered over 200 classes available to the entire community for free. These classes ranged from CPR classes to Veteran support groups, even free haircuts and meals,” said Aundre. She explained to me that the Choose Love Business Plan, consists of choosing love and compassion. When she began creating her style of collective, she kept the community in mind. “I used to give advice

BRIANNA “BRI” P.

Executive Assistant, Remedy Plus

“Never allow anyone to limit you, don’t accept ‘No’ as an answer & always trust your instincts.” THE DEFIANT PATIENT - Brianna works as an Executive Assistant and right hand - to Abdul, the owner of Remedy Plus, an edible company specializing in gummies. In fact, Bri and Abdul knew each other from the “real world” before cannabis. They were co-workers in an admissions office for a college. In fact, when Abdul began Remedy, he tried to get Bri on his team, but she just was not comfortable with the industry yet. Midway through Bri’s undergraduate studies, she had to put her education and career on hold to become a full-time patient. She was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) along with an autoimmune disease. Several diagnoses later, not only did doctors find a pituitary tumor, they found a tumor on the left cerebellum. After her diagnosis, Bri went through several surgeries. Naturally, Bri was put on a pharmaceutical regiment that left her sick and unable to have a functioning life, so she decided to take herself off the medicine. Four months later, she went in to see her doctor. She described the scenario to me, “My doctor ordered an MRI and told me that I had responded to medicine because my tumor had shrunk. I kind of laughed and told her for the first time that I hadn’t taken my medicine in four months and that I had been smoking cannabis every night. We then proceeded to get into a full-blown argument and she told me CONTINUED ON PG 20

I was playing Russian roulette with my life, and that I was gambling on something with no medical benefits or research.” Bri is a powerhouse, I happen to know she just recently underwent another brain surgery. Within two days, was emailing and carrying on as if it were business as usual. Bri is one of those people that has truly overcome trials and tribulations while utilizing cannabis. She went on to tell me she cannot really smoke anymore because coughing bothers her head, so Remedy Plus gummies are getting her through. team made sure that Bhang paid all taxes and advised them to take all existing “regulations” and go above them. For instance, “We triple test our products; first, at the time of extraction we test in-house for potency and contaminants. Then it goes to a 3rd party lab to be tested again for potency. Then we infuse the product and take one sample from each batch and send it back to the lab to be tested for potency and contaminants as well. This is where the industry is going.” If you would like more information about Shanna or Bhang Chocolates please go to: GotBhang.com IG: @BhangBhang Twitter: @BhangChocolate Facebook: /BhangChocolate

MEGHAN LARSON

Owner, Bhang of California

CEO & Co-Founder, Adistry

“I am just like everybody else; I am a mother, I am a wife, I am a business owner and I am in the cannabis industry.”

“I am not the puppet, I am the driver behind Adistry.”

THE QUEEN BEE - This woman can run with a pack of men and come

out the alpha. Playfully known as “Queen,” Shanna Droege is the magnanimous female who has played an integral part in creating the international canna-chocolate empire that is Bhang. Shanna and her husband “Chief,” are the licensees of Bhang Chocolate for California, and have been working with the company since its infancy in 2010. Bhang offers high quality infused products. She explained that cannabis is all that she has ever done. She grew up in Orange County and cannabis was something that her family was very open to. She then moved on to dispensaries. Shanna has owned, operated and consulted for between 16-18 dispensaries throughout her career. Shanna first came across Bhang when then Sales Representative, now Washington state licensee, Jon Paul, walked into her dispensary with a brilliantly packaged edible. At the time, edibles were not on par to what we are used to now, and Shanna instantly gravitated to the company. They began working together, and Shanna began using her connections to introduce Bhang to the masses. By 2011, Shanna and her husband teamed up with Scott Van Rixel, Owner of Bhang, to handle distribution in California. In 2012, the Queen and her Chief, officially became a part of the Bhang family, as licensees. This meant that they would take over all distribution and production for all of California. When I asked why she uses cannabis, Shanna mentioned that she has severe anxiety and insomnia, so sometimes she will vape indica to help; however, she had some valid remarks about that question, “I don’t really think there should have to be a reason as to why someone medicates. I don’t medicate during the day for the most part, especially with edibles, but take me to a BBQ where I can relax and sure, I’ll nibble on a chocolate bar or smoke. I do prefer to vape though, I think it is the cleanest way to smoke and more discreet. Basically if the time is right, I don’t think I need a reason use it.” Shanna brought up a really great point, this is a plant, we shouldn’t have to be ashamed or need to have a reason to use it when we do. Now that we have states that are legal for adult use, and as long as people abide by the laws, they should not be made to feel as though they need a reason to use cannabis. Bhang is one of the “corporate” companies in the cannabis industry and Shanna explained that the decision to setup a corporate structure was vital the success of Bhang today. “Bhang is from the people; I was born and raised into the industry. Her legal

THE TALENTED TECHIE - From Yogi to tech mogul Meghan Larson vows to be the absolute best at what she does. Meghan and her partner founded Adistry, the premier cannabis marketing network. Meghan’s background is in marketing for art studios and various creative organizations. She met her business partner who was looking to take on Weedmaps and other finders when they realized there was no one offering a great platform for digital marketing in the cannabis industry; thus, Adistry was born. Adistry is an advertising platform that offers the industry a solution for all cannabis marketing needs. It was also the very first video ad server for the cannabis industry. They offer a full spectrum of services including ad design and campaign management to publishing ads across their extensive publisher networks which include events, magazines, and websites. Meghan found her niche in the market and was able to carve out a whole new section for her to belong in. She is not a baker of delicious edibles nor is she a collective owner; instead, she is the head of a canna-tech company. I was intrigued to know what it was like from her perspective of not only being a woman in the industry, but the female face of a tech company. Meghan’s answer was perfect: “I have always been taught by my father to never think women were different. Man, woman, or Martian I want to the best.” According to Meghan, this industry has been overwhelmingly welcoming to women. Right now the market may be perceived as predominantly comprised of white males ranging from 21-40 years old. However, this does not necessarily lend itself to creativity, which leads me to believe is precisely the reason as to why there is an influx of feminine energy coming into this business. last year. The workshops will continue throughout the year, two each month, as a free service to the brands and the farms Emerald Family Farms represents and supports. In addition, to being involved in all aspects of the business, Lexi is raising two young girls who are fully aware of what it is their mother and father do. “We have raised them in an environment where cannabis is known as a medicine and not a drug. They understand that although not all people share this same view it isn’t something they need to fear. We operate from a set of morals and ethics rather than any failed, fear mongering, prohibitionist policies,” explained Lexi.

ALEXA “LEXI” DAVIS

Owner & General Manager, Emerald Family Farms

“I believe this industry is becoming a platform full of support for any woman who wants to jump in and take it head on, all they have to do is jump!” THE GLORIOUS GROWER - Alexa “Lexi” Davis is one of the owners of Emerald Family Farms (EFF), a company representing Master Gardeners, Breeders, Healers, and small batch private reserve farmers, that has become one of the fastest growing cooperatives of farms in the Emerald Triangle. They produce a wide range of products from CO2 oil, shatter, disposable pens, edibles and of course some of the best organic flower on the market. Emerald Family Farms has a network of subsidiary brands that they help bring to market and offer a safe haven for smaller farmers. Emerald Family Farms, like its name suggests, is a family striving to bring everyone to their fullest potential. They enjoy bringing smaller famers into their network and sourcing the absolute best products the market has to offer. They are also adamant about keeping the pioneers such as third and fourth generation cultivators with invaluable knowledge in the industry. Both Lexi and her husband Isaiah, were born and raised in Humboldt County and have always had a true sense of the roots of this cannabis industry. Less than a year ago Lexi and Isaiah teamed up with four other like-minded individuals to create a wholly organic cooperative, which now provides top-quality pesticide and chemical free medicine for patients. Emerald Family Farms is comprised of six active partners who not only oversee, but are involved in every aspect of the day-to-day operations of the company. Although too busy to give themselves official job titles at the moment, Lexi serves in a broad management capacity, meaning on any given day one can find her facilitating communication between the managing partners, streamlining production in the warehouse, working with testing laboratories, handling sales, social media, and marketing. Lexi and Isaiah have been active in lobbying efforts for local cannabis farmers. “We set it [Emerald Family Farms] up because Isaiah and Patrick Murphy, another partner at EFF, were policy Co-Chairs of California Cannabis Voice Humboldt (CCVH) and were instrumental in drafting the medical cannabis land use ordinance for Humboldt County.” The ordinance passed unanimously and Humboldt County became the first and only county to regulate medical cannabis under current California laws. The idea was to attempt to bring farmers into compliance and get Humboldt County’s stricter cultivation guidelines grandfathered in before state licenses come into play. “Our passions switched, it was no longer about risk versus reward; it was about what was right and wrong. We had a moral obligation to protect the 15,000 or so small farms in Humboldt and create equal access for small farms into the market place.” Emerald Family Farms was formed from a set of values including, equal access, safe working environments, responsible agriculture, and protecting the small farmers. The partners at Emerald Family Farms are passionate about giving back to both our industry and their community. Lexi explains that they recently set up a question and answer type workshop with their lawyers and advisors for some of the smaller farms and companies, in order to answer questions about compliance and what to do when things go legal recreationally in the future. The meeting was attended by 55 people and was a spinoff from the farmer compliance workshops that CCVH started

As a mother working in the cannabis industry, Lexi had some enlightening advice for mothers who may be afraid of being in the public eye, associated with the cannabis world, “I worked for Child Protective Services for years before I had children, and now in this industry, I have a deeper understanding of what they are looking for when they are coming in. It is a matter of child endangerment from many different aspects of this industry for them. We are open and transparent with our children, but our home is our safe haven and we keep them away from all the risks involved with a cannabis business in regards to any minors.” “I am so humbled by the fact that this industry is finally breaking down walls that should have been gone long before. This industry at the core of my culture and life since the beginning, and although we have just broken the tip off the iceberg, there is no stopping us now.” For more information about Lexi or Emerald Family Farms go to: IG: @EmeraldFamilyFarms Twitter: @EmeraldFamily1 Facebook: /EmeraldFamilyFarms

MJ SANSOUCI

Co-Founder, Strictly Edibles

“I remember some clubs that we definitely put back because I was female vendor, but we won them over anyway!” THE TEAM PLAYER - MJ and her husband started Strictly Edibles, an edible company based in the Bay Area, after having a next-door neighbor who was unable to smoke after getting sick and it was drastically impacting his life. “We realized there was a real need for people to medicate without smoking. They need a cleaner way to get it into their system,” said MJ. She explained to me that their company is one big team. Her and her husband are Strictly Edibles all the way! Everything they do is in an effort to benefit the company. She told me that having a company with her husband is not only “challenging but rewarding.” MJ was actually born on 4/20, so it is evident that she was meant to be in the industry. Her background consists of growing pot, waiting tables, being a Veterinarian Assistant and making t-shirts; however, she found a home in cannabis. Strictly Edibles Collective offers some of the best edibles I have ever had. The Tomi Cakes and doughnuts are not only award winning, but absolutely delicious. We have known MJ and Strictly edibles for a while and we have been fortunate to watch them grow. They have fantastic products that come from a great team. ZEN POTION

Zen Potion - Niruana Cannabis Tea - 77mg

Zen Potion is a new cannabis infused coffee and tea line of edibles. The first thing we noticed was the ridiculously gorgeous packaging. Zen Potion has great branding with pyramid-like triangular boxes that are extremely visually appealing. It felt like I was committing an act of vandalism opening it. Upon breaking it open, a fancy teabag appeared full of fragrant herbs. Additionally, inside the packaging, Zen Potion includes a thoughtful Buddhist quote. On average, cannabis infused tea bags consist of dosing that ranges anywhere from 2.5 to 20mg. Zen Potion set a new bar with a whopping 77mg for a cup of tea! They also offer a 7.5mg hibiscus tea and a 50mg black chai tea, in addition to infused coffee K-cups. The tea has an earthy, vrey herbal taste, full of flavor and aroma. We suggest adding organic honey or maple syrup and/or almond milk to your liking. The teabag is strong enough for two cups of tea. We would recommend making at least two cups, or brewing one cup and then brewing a less strong cup with the used tea bag afterwards. The tea definitely does its job. It leaves with you a great body high, that might be a little heavy on the eyes, but amazing for sweet dreams, with no fuzzy weed hangover. We recommend this one to tea lovers, patients looking for a healthy way to consume their medicine, or anyone in need of a ‘staycation.’ (Just be sure to pre-stock the house with snacks - there won’t be any driving).

BOSS LADY EDIBLES

A new trend in the infusion market is cannabis bath bhombs. What better way to get your meds than directly through the skin? Boss Lady’s bath bhombs are large balls that dissolve into your bath water, creating an infused bath dream escape from pain. We highly recommend trying out their bath bhombs. Not only are they medicated with cannabis, they have healing essential oils and just a hint of menthol for topical pain relief that is unmatched.

Bath Bhombs & Cookies and Cream 1000mg Bar

Their chocolate bars are 1000mg and will hit you like a truck. Proceed with extreme CAUTION. This, ladies and gentlemen is 1000mg. if you know that you can tolerate the whole bar, congratulations! This will last most patients a few days. Fortunately, the label is very clearly written. So if you eat the whole bar, you didn’t read it. White chocolate isn’t everyone’s favorite, but because it is such a high-dose edible, you don’t need to eat very much to get the job done. There wasn’t a detectable medicine or awkward taste at all. I personally give it a high score for taste. We really like this candy bar and it definitely does the trick! Plus, there is an added benefit, they are cost effective! Since they are so high-dose, you can buy one and eat it over time. Just refrigerate and break pieces off as you desire to, and enjoy!

HEAVENLY SWEET MEDIBLES Heavenly Baked - Maui Wowie Krispie Bar - (Sativa 147mg)

The Heavenly Baked Maui Wowie Krispie Bar by Heavenly Sweet Medibles is a far cry from your average infused rice crispy treat. While super yummy, it’s not low calorie! The recommended dosage is 3-4 bites to get started, depending on your tolerance you might need more to feel the effects on this one. While you can taste the medication, it definitely left a chill, relaxed feeling. This particular bar has a Sativa infusion, so while all edibles take on a “body high” type feeling (because the THC is absorbed through the lower G.I. tract), you may notice that it still leaves you functional rather than couch locked like a Hybrid or Indica edible would. We recommend this one to anyone with a sweet tooth who isn’t fond of the gummie candies or items that need to be refrigerated. Beyond the extra points on being strain specific (we love Maui Wowie!), Heavenly Sweet Medibles takes their Maui Wowie Krispie Bar presentation to the next level. In addition to the sensual flavors of coconut, marshmallow, and toasted macadamia nuts, the krispie bar is covered and dipped in white chocolate, then drizzled with dark chocolate, and then topped with more toasted macadamia nuts. Who needs a fruity cocktail on the beach when you can take this staycation with you anywhere. WWW.EDIBLESMAGAZINE.COM | ISSUE NO. 22

KARIN CLARKE

President - KC Business Solutions , Cornerstone Membership Sales Director SW/SoCal, Women Grow Sales Representative, Making You Better Brands (Xternal)

“It is incredibly advantageous to be a woman in this industry. Don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.” THE SOBER CANNA-SALESWOMAN - Karin came into the industry by way of payment solutions for cannabis companies including point of sale banking at dispensaries. She has an extensive background in Sales and Sales Training and for her it was a no brainer to step into the cannabis industry. She uses no/low THC products, as she has been sober for 28 years and does not like the feeling of being high. Low THC products do however; help with her arthritis and anxiety. She also uses cannabis topicals to significantly improve her quality of life. She has not taken pharmaceuticals for her pain in almost 3 years and attributes that to cannabis. You can read more about her story in our February 2016 issue (see Issue #21). When I asked her how she likes being a woman in the industry her answer was short and simple, “Awesome, it’s inspiring to be here. I think being a woman and being educated about cannabis and the endocannabinoid system has an affect on how people perceive you in the industry.” She also explained how the industry has room for everyone. Right now, there are two very distinct types of women in the industry. There are the professionals and those who embrace the “sex sells” idea. Karin noted, “I am not a fan of exploiting women to sell anything.” Although there is a place here for both, it would be nice to see a bridge in the gap. Here is some great advice from Karin to someone looking to get into the industry: “Jump in and get educated! This plant provides medicine as well as getting high. For me, I am on the medicine side of things. I think there is room for everyone. Most importantly, do not judge. Do not judge cannabis as a plant and do not judge the people using it for whatever reason they need. I was one of those people who judged for a long time and I missed out on so much.” Karin also owns KC Business Solutions, which provides corporate background checks, payroll and payment solutions, as well as business consulting and training for the cannabis industry. TANGANYIKA ‘TANGY’ CEO/Founder, Jayn Green Author, The Canna Print

“Women are powerful. Use your power for good.” THE FEARLESS FIGHTER - Tanganyika aka Tangy has appeared in our magazine previously (see Issue No. 18) as a part of our Veterans issue. Tangy is a USMC veteran, who has dedicated her life to advocating for cannabis. She began her career in cannabis as the Executive Assistant at TKO Edibles. She loved working for the company, but bigger things were in her future. She has a cannabis brand called Jayn Green that features a full line of self care products including beard oil, beard balm and body butter. The products all stemmed from someone sitting next to her at a 420 College with a terrible smelling salve on. She felt that there had to be a better way, so she began making her own topicals that not only worked but had an amazing scent for pleasure as well. Activism is a vital part of this industry, and Tangy is absolutely involved. Recently, she spoke at the NAACP about adding diversity into the industry. She explained to me that she feels that minorities should not be left behind in this industry and that she is worried that is beginning to happen. Her goal is to help educate minorities about the benefits of cannabis, “There are so many entrepreneurial opportunities, and we can really use our intellect to shine here.” Tangy is a fighter; she went through two tours in Iraq while in the military. She notes that this industry’s fight is long from over and how important it is that we stay inclusive to everyone. It shouldn’t matter who you are or what your background is, if you have something to offer our community accepts you. She even told me her favorite aspects of the industry, “I love this industry. I love the grind of it. I love the passion of the people. I love helping people.” Tangy is the co-producer of the cannabis documentary The Secret Life of Trimmers, and she just published an eBook starter guide for Cannaprenuers called, The Canna Print. It is a complete guide about how to get started in the industry, how to get involved in a non-legal state, where to find funding options, how you can become an investor in the industry, 50+ benefits of cannabis and so much more. MACKENZIE MEDICINALS Topical Tincture Healing Oil

Mackenzie Medicinals Topical Oil is cannabis oil blended with other essential oils to further enhance the healing properties of cannabis. The base is organic coconut oil, and the bottle contains 450mg of THC. In addition to cannabis infused oil, this fine little topical tincture includes Copaiba - oil from the Amazon is a wound healer and anti-inflammatory, Emu oil - heals burns and is a transdermal, and Tamanu - from the South Pacific which is an anti-neuralgic and an antibacterial. According to the owners of Mackenzie Medicinals, patients have reported that it has helped them with pain from arthritis to fibromyalgia, as well helping to heal skin infections, burns and rashes. I have inadvertently carried the spray in a jacket I always wear. In fact, I walked into something - I am kind of clumsy - and had a giant bruise on my hip while out with friends one night. Since I happened to have the topical healing oil in my pocket, and within fifteen minutes after using it, the throbbing from the bruise was gone. It is no wonder they won first place for Best Topical Tincture in the 2015 Best of Edibles List Awards. It is smooth when sprayed on and leaves the skin feeling moisturized. Amongst the many chews available on the market, Veda Chews sets themselves apart with an unparallelled medical product. We really enjoyed these mini chocolate caramel chews. The products they have available are Gold CBD, Silver CBD, Indica, Hybrid, Sativa, and Mega Hybrid. With their products ranging from 40mg to 210mg they have taken the guesswork out of dosing with each package separated and individually packaged into 4 doses. It helps that they are individually sealed in a pharmaceutical-grade tray ensuring you eat one at a time.

VEDA CHEWS

Chocolate Caramel Chews & Topical Roll-On Balm

The THC flavor is strong, though they’re small, so it’s easy to digest. The recommended wait time for additional dosing is approximately 1 hour, to which I impatiently ate another about 40 mins in. Great body and head high, long-lasting with no hangover feeling. The high is light but noticeable and gives you some nice warm-fuzzies, and maybe a few extra laughs. What we really love about this product is the fact that it’s Non-GMO, Sugar-Free and Vegan. I’ve finally found what I’m looking for! - a truly healthy edible. In addition to the chews, they also offer a Veda Balm, a CBD topical product with 60mg THC and 60mg CBD (in the small roll-on), the large balm has exactly twice as much medicine, infused with 180mg THC and 180mg CBD.

BHANG CHOCOLATES Bhang Chocolate Bars & Vape Pens

Bhang is one of the most renowned brands in our young industry. Scott Van Rixel, the CEO and his team of licensees have turned a chocolate bar into an international sensation. Scott came into the industry with a great brand and amazing product (with fantastic packaging) and teamed up with the right people, and now the brand is in six states and has an international presence. At this point I am sure many of you have heard of Bhang, if not tried their products, but for anyone who has not tried one of their chocolates or someone looking for a safe and consistent edible to start with, Bhang would be it. If you are new to edibles, I would suggest trying the ice chocolate bar. It is peppermint milk chocolate using a hybrid CO2 infusion. Bhang’s chocolate is made using fairly traded Venezuelan criollo cacao and only the finest natural ingredients. In this specific bar, the flavor of cannabis is virtually undetectable and the flavor brings me back to when I was little and would eat the mint chocolates left on the pillows at a hotel. However, do note that this bar is 180mg, so start go and go slow. The bar is scored out in 45mg pieces, therefore, you can portion it out depending on your tolerance. Additionally, I tasted the fire chocolate, cookies & cream, cherries & cream and CBD caramel bars. I liked the fire chocolate because it is has a kick to it that actually creeps up on you. The textured packaging is eye catching and sleek. They even include barcodes, complete nutrition facts, along with all pertinent information. The Bhang vaporizer cartridges are smooth and clean tasting. I tried the 550mg All Natural Purple Diesel. It was great tasting and incredibly effective. The company offers a few lines of cartridge, the Bhang Black Private Reserve series (testing at 70%), the Pure Oil (testing at 50-60%) and the All Natural (2030%) lines as well. They also have the Bhang Perfecto, a discreet disposable pen filled with the All Natural oil. SUNNI DAZE EDIBLES Medicated Pies & Mini Pies - 35mg & 100mg

Sunni Daze Edibles offers a line of medicated pies that are available in Key Lime, Chocolate Silk, Banana Cream, and Fluffernutter flavors. Their pies come in minis as well and are made by a professional baker with nearly a decade of experience in the cannabis industry. The medicated pies are infused with a cold water hash infusion and come in both 35mg and 100mg options. Sunni Daze Edibles is run by a professional baker, they want their product to feel tailor made for each individual. There is a flavor for everyone. Our favorites were the Key Lime and Fluffernutter pies. The cannabis taste is not overpowering, and the consistency of the pies are just as they mentioned fluffy and delicious, but not too sweet. Straying away from the norm of cookies and brownies, Sunni Daze Edibles leaves a taste in your mouth that you will surely remember. “That is a huge factor for me, if it doesn’t taste good I don’t want to eat it. I also feel that the dosage I have allotted for the pies at 35mg or 100mg is strong enough for an experienced cannabis consumer as well as a good entry level for a first time user. I chose pies because I felt that I had never seen it done before. I love key lime pie, it’s a nostalgic dessert for me and I really like making it too. Why not make it medicated? Twice as nice!,” said the creator of Sunni Daze Edibles.

The inspiration behind Dhamma Edibles is to provide a healthy, nearly 100% organic alternative to consuming medical cannabis in an edible form with Vegan and Paleo options. There are several exceptional brands out there, that are making movements in the edible industry. However, many products being provided are saturated in high fats, gluten, and artificial sugars. Which then limits the span of consumerism to a specific patient prototype. The goal is to start a health initiative that reaches all patients far and wide.

DHAMMA EDIBLES Cinnful Bites, Coconut Cups, & Brownie Bites - 200mg

Their 200mg award-winning organic Cinnful Bites package contains four mini cinnamon rolls and are a patient favorite. Toast them or microwave them at home and drizzle the paleo, vegan icing on yourself for a warm and delicious treat that makes you feel good about what you ate. They also have 200mg coconut cups, brownie bites, and infused croutons (that also come in a 400mg bag). Dhamma’s aim is to introduce grain-free, gluten-free, low-sugar, and starch-free products that are healthy but delicious. Dhamma avoids anything GMO, non-organic, refined and processed, so that their edibles are not contributing to additional health ailments. They take gentle care with the ingredients that they put into their products as well as the kind of cannabis. They lab test all of their products to ensure accurate doses to achieve pain-relief and comfort for our patients.

BUTTER BABY! Cannabis Infused O.G. Butter - 894mg

If you’re looking for straight infused cannabutter that you can just cook with, then Butter Baby!’s O.G. Butter is the product you’re looking for. They won first place for Best CannaButter in our 2015 Best of Edibles List Awards. Sometimes it’s easier or more cost effective to buy your own infused butter and then make infused snacks or meals over and over again. The 4 ounce jar (1 cup) is infused with 894mg of THC. Most edibles on the market are sweet or sugary, you can take Butter Baby!’s cannabutter and spread just a little on toast for a stoney wake and bake, or you can use a quarter cup (or a half cup depending on your recipe size and tolerance) and make some infused mashed potatoes or mac and cheese. The possibilities are only limited to your imagination. What we love about Butter Baby! is that they use only organic and pesticide-free buds, with a triple step filtration process, and they are lab tested. We greatly appreciate their contribution of a clean, pure product to the edible market.

to make it their industry and embrace the values of social impact companies. Simply put, an Industry that recognizes and respects all stakeholders; vendors, customers, owners and employees and is committed to being environmentally sound and sustainable. She commented on the fact that until we see cannabis go federally legal, there is so much opportunity for small businesses and women. It is apparent that our industry is maturing quickly and the importance of understanding business is going to be a vital part of having a successful company in the cannabis market. Sheri is truly a woman who knows what she wants and goes for it. She wants to help this industry blossom under women. She has lived in the man’s world and knows its downfalls and foibles. It is time to leave it behind. She hopes to see the cannabis industry be led by women who embrace the social impact. To learn more about Sheri Orlowitz and Artemis Holdings please go to:

“Being around females in the industry is great. It’s not just stoners out here!” THE RENAISSANCE WOMAN - Though this industry was born out of the grassroots movement, there is a growing fear that big business will come in and shut out all the little guys. It is no secret that the cannabis industry is the hottest market for investment right now. However, whom should they invest in? How should vendors work with investors? What deals are good deals? How should cannabis entrepreneurs (or wannabes) proceed, raise money, grow their businesses? These questions are precisely ones that Sheri Orlowitz, of Artemis Holdings Group, can help answer. Sheri represents the “other side” of the industry, but she is using her standing in business, law and the political realm to help further the cannabis industry domestically and internationally. Due to her reputation and integrity, she is able to get in front of the politicians and CEOs of large corporations and non-profits and explain the benefits to those who may otherwise be uncomfortable with the thought of legalizing cannabis. Currently, she is working with the Greek government to approve a GMP facility to cultivate, process and export medical cannabis to the EU, which will inevitably lead Greece into an economic upswing. Sheri’s background is in entrepreneurship and has had of several successful careers. She was an actress for eight years, a commodities trader, a lawyer for the DOJ – she actually dealt with asset forfeiture, the set of laws that allows the Feds to seize your assets - without being proven guilty - if suspected to come from the sale of illegal drugs - like heroin, meth or even cannabis. Additionally, she has developed real estate, raised close to $100 million for her ventures, and orchestrated leveraged buyouts of ten manufacturing companies that she operated as CEO and CFO. Business and finance are going to become an important part of the industry explained Sheri, “If cannabis businesses, dispensaries, and cultivators–are going to be successful they need to ensure they excel legally, financially, and operationally, that is what she wants to help do. Margins are good, they forgive a lot right now, but I am beginning to see the landscape strewn with failed businesses. So, it’s starting to happen and in this industry it can happen fast.” She went on to explain the importance of GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices) especially at the infused products level. These are used in the pharmaceutical industry and she feels they need to be adopted into ours. She explained this gap is exactly the reason she came into the industry; she felt she could lend some of her expertise gained in 20 years of presiding over and ensuring quality and consistency in manufacturing companies to the cannabis industry. Manufacturing is uber male dominated, but Sheri explained that she steeled herself for the industry and received the respect it was not easy, it was not pleasant, it is not the future. The cannabis industry does not need to parallel; women have the opportunity

JENNY R. CEO & Co-Founder, Goodies by Magooch

“Being around females in the industry is great. It’s not just stoners out here!” THE BLAZIN BAKER - Goodies by MaGooch has become a force to be reckoned within the California cannabis market. Jenny and her husband Rocky formed the company in 2009, after not being able to find a reliable and consistent edible manufacturer. Rocky was really the reason why they began. He could not find an edible he liked until they found an older woman making infused olive oil. Slowly but surely, Jenny found herself making at least a cake a day for Rocky and other family members. Shortly thereafter they found themselves at a dispensary trying to sell their edibles. Jenny explained that she received some amazing branding advice when she first began. At first Goodies by MaGooch was Fresh Baked or something in the like, but a dispensary owner looked and them and pointed out five other companies with fresh or baked in the name. It was then they realized they needed to create a brand to differentiate themselves from the competition. Pre-Cannabis Jenny was a bookkeeper and Rocky was a carpenter in the union, both were pretty good jobs but she explained that neither were as rewarding as their lives now. Now, they are able to truly help people. Jenny explained to me that they actually sponsor patients here and there. They are passionate about giving back to the people who are truly the foundation of the industry, the patients. Gbmagooch.com Twitter: GBMagooch IG: GoodiesByMagooch

CEO, Alaska Cannabis Club President and Director, Go GREENE

“Reaching your full potential begins with setting big, detailed, audacious goals - goals that you commit to. Whether you achieve the goals you set or not is irrelevant.” THE PUBLIC POWERHOUSE - Charlene Egbe, better known as Charlo Greene, is a broadcast journalist and media expert turned activist and businesswoman who has perpetuated the ongoing conversations surrounding legalization and diversity in the cannabis community. In September 2014, she solidified her spot as a cannabis activist when she realized her job as a journalist had led her to her calling, cannabis. She could not help herself; she had to tell the world her truth. It was then that she punctuated her on-air report about the Alaska Cannabis Club, with the bombshell that she was the club’s founder and owner, proudly declared her activism and signed off for the last time with, “F*ck it, I quit.” Charlo explained to me how surreal it was discussing a cannabis club that no one had any idea she was the owner of. Immediately following her exit, Charlo successfully led the charge in Alaska’s 2014 effort to legalize recreational marijuana, securing Alaska’s place as the third state in the nation (and first Republicanled state) to legalize usage for adults. Through her newly launched socially conscious organization Go GREENE, Charlo is joining forces with nationwide grassroots activism campaigns that seek to change the way the world thinks about cannabis. Charlo currently belongs to the Minority Cannabis Business Association, and serves as the only non-medical doctor on the Board of Advisors for MD Herb - a leading online medical marijuana resource. Additionally, Charlo also serves as CEO of the Alaska Cannabis Club (akcannabisclub.com), Alaska’s first and only legal marijuana resource. ALISON ETTEL

CEO & Co-Founder, TreatWell

CHACHA VAVOOM

Owner & Founder, The 420Nurses

“When you break it down, girls have a home in this industry in any way, shape or form.” THE PROMOTIONAL GENIUS - Vanessa “ChaCha VaVoom” Sahagun has turned an organization with only a handful of members into an internationally known conglomerate. Women all over the world are flocking to the 420Nurses as a way for them to bridge the gap between their every day lives and cannabis. The 420Nurses is a marketing company created by women for women providing services including promotional modeling, online promotions, print distribution, social networking and activism. The 420Nurses have been severely misjudged in our industry. There are people who feel as though the 420Nurses just perpetuate the cycle of objectifying women, but what most people do not realize is that these girls are professionals. Although some people do not agree with what Ms. VaVoom (as she is most known as) created, it is a platform that allows women to come together and find a home within the cannabis industry. She has created a safe haven for women to express themselves within the industry. She said it best; “We want[ed] to bring more of a home to these girls where they’re not going to feel alone. It’s more of a family where we are able to grow.” Vanessa explained that the 420Nurses began out of necessity, “Promotional modeling and cannabis were a part of my life. To me promotional modeling and being in this industry is huge.” It all started with promotional models wearing cannabis clothing and sparking conversations about pot at various events. The 420Nurses are unique in the fact that they do not distribute or sell cannabis - they just smoke a lot of it! In addition to promotional modeling, the 420Nurses can be seen advocating and collecting signatures for CCHI. ChaCha and her crew have been collecting signatures and assisting in legalization efforts for years. Many are too quick to judge this woman and this organization. ChaCha explained that 420Nurses is not geared toward sexualizing women. It is about empowering women to feel comfortable with cannabis.

“Being an entrepreneur is part of who I am, and I am out to change an industry!” THE CANNA-PET LOVER - Alison Ettel is the CEO of TreatWell, a cannabis company specializing in high quality, non-psychoactive medicine. They offer a full line of pet and human tinctures. She came from a very professional background and switched into the cannabis industry after using cannabis for the very first time during her recovery after a coma from meningitis. It took her months to recover, but she remembers distinctly what cannabis did for her: “The fog cleared from my brain. I started getting an appetite back, I could walk…and I could just feel this connectivity starting,” she explained. Alison is not some “dumb stoner”; in fact, she has an extremely extensive background. She holds a few masters degrees and has worked on Wall Street, and a think tank and in software – until meningitis took over and she found her true calling, cannabis. She started out because she wanted to raise the bar in the industry. She did not trust the consistency or quality of the medicine and knew there had to be a better way. She began by educating herself, took classes and consulted with doctors, researchers and some of the best alchemists around. While learning about cannabis she had an interesting revelation, “The more I learned about the plant, the more I became fascinated by it. The potential for the plant is almost limitless,” exclaimed Alison. The founders began by working with humans and then gradually progressed into the pet side. Alison is a huge pet lover; on the side she is a dog walker, pet sitter and bakes organic treats for some of the shops in San Francisco. There was not a lot of information out there for TreatWell in the beginning when it came to pets and cannabis. Now, Alison is considered one of the leading experts on the topic. The beginning formulations were trial and error when pets had run out of any other option, but they seemed to hit the nail on the head fairly quickly, based on some of their outcomes and cases. Alison is well educated and explained to me that 75% of her customer base is women, so she has not had a hard time connecting with the industry at all, despite being a female. She also went on to explain, “People initially underestimate me a lot in this industry. But I talk the talk and I have the knowledge and data to back it up, so people quickly realize that I know what I am talking about.”

Vanessa Sahagun is a truly genuine person. She has created a platform where women can express themselves and choose how they represent themselves and the industry. Not everything the 420Nurses do are done while scantily clad. These ladies have filled a niche in the market and have done it extremely well.

She also touched on a subject that I found interesting, “I think there is a clash of old world and new world in the cannabis industry. One of our advantages is that we have many years of anecdotal data and we are able to use this in conjunction with the research and scientific data, which is very powerful. We provide a piece of the puzzle that the doctors and vets are seeking in addition to what they read in the research studies.”

meDIBLE rECIPES:

A great late winter starter, I love different spices during colder weather. Here is an Indian Inspired clean eating dish.

Medicated Curried Chicken Salad

Ingredients

3 cups of shredded or diced cooked chicken 1 small apple, diced 1½ cup of infused mayo (I prefer to make my own paleo mayo) 3-diced chives 1 tablespoon of curry powder ¼ cup slivered almonds Sea salt and black pepper to taste Instructions

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. You can serve the salad on its own or put on top of lettuce cups, cucumber slices, endives, etc.

420 Homemade Paleo Mayo Instructions

Ingredients: 2 Egg Yolks 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard 1 teaspoon of sea salt ¼ -1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper depending on preference ½ teaspoon of onion powder 2 cups of canna olive oil

In a food processor or using a hand-held food mixer add all the ingredients above with the exception of the canna olive oil and start to mix. Add the olive oil as slowly as possible. Some food processors have a drip valve or tool that you can use. Make sure the machine mixer does not get too hot. Stop mixing and adding olive oil once desired consistency is obtained. If the mixture turns to watery add another tablespoon of vinegar and another egg yolk and slowly blend it into the mix once the desired consistency is achieved.

Cannabis Infused Tahini Vanilla Truffles

54

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons raw tahini 4 tablespoons canna coconut butter or coconut cream 1 tablespoon unsweetened shredded coconut 1-2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup ¼ tablespoon-cinnamon Pinch of Sea Salt ½ teaspoon of pure vanilla extract 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds for coating Instructions: In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients with the exception of the sesame seeds until smooth. Take the mixture and form 1-inch balls or hockey puck shapes and coat with sesame seeds. If you want some extra sweetness, coat in shredded coconut.

In staying with our quasi-Near East theme, this dessert is sesame seed based which is great if you have a nut allergy!

Flying High Infused Greek Lamb Kabobs Keeping with the slightly “non-western” flare, check out these Greek Lamb Kabobs. Ingredients:

1 lb cubed lamb stew meat 1 bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces. I prefer orange or yellow 2 zucchinis, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces Juice of 2 lemons or limes ½ teaspoon of dried oregano ½ teaspoon of sea salt ¼-1/2 teaspoon of black pepper ¼ cup of canna infused extra virgin olive oil Instructions:

Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Place in alternating fashion the meats and veggies on a skewer In a small mixing bowl, mix all the dry ingredients with the lemon or lime juice Brush this mixture onto the skewers and allow to marinate for 10 minutes. Place the skewers on the grill or in a pan and cook for approx. 3-4 minutes per side and drizzle with a little canna infused extra virgin olive oil just prior to serving.

For more information about Dana or Forbidden Leaf visit: www.forbiddenleaf.com IG: @ForbiddenLeaf Twitter: @ForbiddenLeaf Facebook: /ForbiddenLeaf

DANA DWIGHT Owner & Creator, Forbidden Leaf Hemp Seed Oil, Lotion & Soap Co.

“Who better to defend a female plant than a woman?” THE HEMP GODDESS - Dana Dwight began working with hemp seedoilin2004.Hermotherwasdiagnosedwithterminallungcancer and they used hemp seed oil as a nutritional supplement to help with the nausea and pain. After her mother passed, she continued using hemp seed oil for inflammation diseases like psoriasis. She explained that Forbidden Leaf specializes in cold pressed hemp seed oil, which is much different than other companies as most of them use refined oil, according to Dana. Apparently cold pressed oil retains all of the vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Forbidden Leaf offers a complete hemp seed oil skin care line and are planning to enter into the THC infused line shortly. Dana’s first time using cannabis was at the age of twelve. She stopped smoking for a while and then picked cannabis back up after being diagnosed with cancer. She explained that it is important to “reach out to others and to never give up.” Her mother was truly the inspiration behind what she does and although she has passed, Dana wants to continue her legacy of being so involved with this plant. Dana and I discussed how more and more females are banning together and that it is creating a greater power for us. As she said, “I think it is time for women to have a voice. Times are a changing and we are bing heard.” She rose a great point about where she hopes to see the industry go. “I’d like to see the hemp industry come back to America. We need to bring awareness to the other aspect of cannabis, which is hemp.” Too often we come across people that believe since we have legal cannabis in some states, the war is over. However, this is a single battle and we have so many yet to come including tackling the idea of children and cannabis or the fact that people are still serving life sentences and the tight restrictions around growing hemp. The war is far from over and we need everyone’s help to fight it. 56 WWW.EDIBLESMAGAZINE.COM | ISSUE NO. 22

KEIKO BEATIE A Woman of Many Hats

“I really feel that being a woman in this industry is powerful and that we have the capability to connect on a much deeper level, than say the men do – I am a sativa girl!” THE CANNABIS GODMOTHER - Keiko Beatie is one of those unsung heroes. She does not own a ginormous company nor does she create edibles, but the words cannabis and Keiko have become synonymous. Keiko first came into the industry because she saw the need to help the patients through activism, education and spreading awareness. Keiko has so many great tidbits of advice; if you don’t know her, you need to. She explained to me that she has been utilizing cannabis in health for years. According to her, “I always knew that cannabis was a medicine and through my studies of holistic and Ayurveda medicines, I knew that plant matter had something that connected more with the body’s tissues. I knew that we have endocanabinoid systems and there are cannabinoids within the cannabis plant. I also knew that if we flooded the body with good enzymes from a plant, then we would have a chance to have it be whole and well again.” What means so much to her is sharing with those in need about how the plant may assist in better health and alleviating serious ailments and diseases. Keiko feels honored to have had many success in fighting cancer, epilepsy, PTSD and many other health issues. Keiko is involved in several outreach programs and organizations. She is one of those people that embody the spirit of the industry. She is always there to lend a helping hand or ear. Pre-cannabis she worked in the surf and music industry curating film, art and music for major surf film festivals, museums and events throughout the world. She is inspired by music, art and film and worked with such groups as Van Halen and The Police, the last film she worked was the surf film, A Deeper Shade of Blue.

She explained how she has reacted to anyone who feels like she cannot do something because she is a woman, “If anyone has thrown any shade, I ignore it. It can be challenging, but I try to let go of anybody who puts any blockages towards women. I feel that we are all human beings and it doesn’t matter if you are a man or woman. I think all of us as a team should be able to move forward and assist the out-reach for cannabis.” Keiko goes on to describe what it has been like to be a woman in the cannabis industry and why it is way may be able to connect more deeply than men; “I love the women in this industry, because we are all around a female flowered plant and we are all stimulated by the compassion it has to offer as well as what it offers to us as individuals. I love men, I gave birth to one - but I do feel that women connecting, women respecting each other and reaching out is much more of a strong force than us working against each other. This is a female plant, so the energy it has to offer us is so powerful.” With a varied and diverse background, Keiko consults with delivery services and had created a successful collective in Southern California with a partner. Her background is in Ayurvedic, Chinese and Holistic medicines. She has knowledge in midwifery, acupuncture, herbology and rebirthing and was the third person in the US to have a baby born underwater. Keiko is a Vegetarian Chef and worked in a top Orange County and Santa Cruz Vegetarian restaurants. Keiko also assisted in creating the first cannabis TV Network, the US Weed Channel, is the Co-Host at Hemp Radio and has done on camera reporting for Cannabis Financial Network and other outlets. She also works with Women Grow OC and is a board member for OC Norml. Keiko is a writer for Edibles Magazine and other cannabis publications, is a producer for the new film, The Secret Life of Trimmers and founder of West Coast Cannabis Film Festival. Lastly, Keiko had some amazing advice for young entrepreneurs, “Believe in yourself. Know what you want to do, see your goal and reach out to others. You have nothing to lose. It just takes one step and don’t let anyone’s ‘no’ falter you because you know what, there could be 10 yes’s right behind there. Be true to yourself. Be true to others. And always feel that through this plant we can grow a lot of love and positivity.” She has a goal and personal mantra for the community and industry “Acceptance and legalization through education, outreach and partnership.” For more information about Keiko Beatie please check out: LinkedIn: Keiko Beatie or Greenwaverelations@gmail.com

President & Pioneer, Julie’s Natural Edibles

“Don’t be afraid! Being a women is great!” THE PIONEERING PARENT - Julie Dooley is not your stereotypical “stoner”. She is the President of Julie’s Natural Edibles, which was founded in 2008. She was diagnosed with Celiac disease and cannabis was the only medicine she would use as a therapy. She began by making butter with her Co-Creator Kate and it grew into so much more. Julie’s background is in science. She went to college for Human Genetics and she actually joked about her degree, “The only thing I did with that, was have babies.” She has three children that she could not help but gloat over. Julie then went on to explain that she simply got bored and began working at the University of Denver as the Budgeting Director. There she learned how to manage millions of dollars for a large entity. Julie and I discussed the importance of working together to further the industry. She explained that in Colorado the large edible manufacturers decided a long time ago that they were not competitors. The big players decided to ban together in an edibles council of sorts in order to be sounding boards for one another and conquer the ever-changing reforms together. According to Julie, “You have to work together to stop regulations before it happens. You can save yourself thousands.” Julie is an incredible self-made businesswoman. She explained to me that she continues to educate herself on everything. After deciding to make granola she had to learn how to scale that recipe to accommodate thousands of orders. Clearly, she is a proud mama. She spoke about her “wonderful children” and how her children help to keep her feet on the ground. I asked her what it has been like to go from housewife to international cannabis expert, “I know a little bit more than other people. It is very humbling to be a part of this industry. We’re creating it. My kids have benefited by watching mom go from an idea to a company. They have a deep respect for cannabis and me.“ To finish off she gave me some extremely valuable advice for new entrepreneurs: 1.”Take heart regarding the things you don’t know or understand. I knew nothing about marketing. INCREDIBLES COLORADO

GUM-E BITE SIZE BITS

It might just be a Pavlov response, but every time I see “E” on Incredibles’ packaging, I am eager to examine its contents. I really do love the re-sealable packaging. Sometimes I like to take my time and get to know my edibles a little better. So it is nice to have that option of sealing in the freshness. The packaging is very clearly labeled.

gummies are actually made from scratch. That’s right! No spraying here.

The entire package contains 100mg of THC, each gummie being 6.6mg-8.3mg, perfect dosing for medical or recreational purposes. Now we all know there are a ton of infused gummie candy companies out there, but what we love about Incredible, besides being one of the original edible companies in Colorado, is that these

I have to say, the gummies tasted incredible! They didn’t have that weird aftertaste that I normally get with gummies (usually because of the type of oil or concentrate used). As far as I could tell, the potency seemed spot on. The entire package is filled with tangerine, grape and cherry flavored gummies.

I ate two and waited an hour, then took two more. Shortly after, all was right with the world. My pain and spasms settled down. I no longer cared about what was going on with the primaries. And somehow, I was still able to get some things done.

BLACK CHERRY BAR

If you like fruit in your chocolate like I do, this is the candy bar for you. The black cherry chocolate bar by Incredibles is absolutely delicious. The 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC makes this bar ideal for daytime use. Incredibles really set themselves apart from their competition by offering THCinfused products containing homemade, in-house hash oil, butter and bubble hash. They fully decarboxylate the oil and test every batch. By creating everything in-house, they have more control of the process from start to finish ensuring consistent and quality products.

Upon first bite, I was introduced to the taste of rich dark chocolate, and dried cherries. My initial thought was how could this possibly be medicated, because it was so delicious. It didn’t take long to realize

58 58

WWW.EDIBLESMAGAZINE.COM | ISSUE NO. 22

that it was indeed medicated. After about a half hour, I felt a calm over my body. The combination of THC with CBD works really well for me. With that combination, my body feels heavily medicated, while my head stays clear. If you suffer from occasional low blood pressure. However, I would advise a word of caution. For me, the combination tends to lower my blood pressure as I run normally low already. It really hasn’t been a problem for me, because I’m sitting all day. But if I were able to stand, I would be concerned about losing my balance, or falling and hurting myself. Other than that little caution, I really like this product. It seems like edibles taste so much better from when I started medicating some years ago. I have never had a product from Incredibles that I did not like. So unless you detest fruit

n my opinion, these treats are among the best in the gummy category. And knowing that I have sealed in the freshness for tomorrow, makes it even better.

with your

with your chocolate, you will love this bar. There is something about black cherry that just goes perfect with dark chocolate.

COLORADO MEDICAL & RECREATIONAL EDIBLE REVIEWS

JULIE’S NATURAL EDIBLES

Leading the way in Colorado Edibles

D

ear Julie & Team: You win. Well played ladies, well played.

J

ulie’s Natural Edibles offers a full line of both medical and recreational, premium and healthy cannabis infused edibles in Colorado. All of their products are gluten, refined sugar, pesticide and non-GMO free. This makes me feel less gluttonous, considering I ate all five of the Nutty Bites, in one fail swoop.

L

et me tell you about these Nutty Bites, they are small clusters of almonds and sunflower seeds tossed together in a maple syrup blend with a hint of cinnamon. If I had to give these an award I think it would simply read; “Julie’s Natural Edibles - Nutty Bites - You Win!” These are by far the best edibles I have ever tasted. There is little to no detection of cannabis and it does not weigh you down after consumption. They are guilt-free... almost anyway. I do suggest that everyone tries these gooey squares of splendor; I would however, strongly advise that one not eat the entire tube, in one sitting. The high was extremely mellow and the desired effect would have been reached after one square. I believe I would have been able to function on them fine at anytime of day. Since I ate five, I slept really, really well but did not wake up feeling groggy.

J

ulie’s also offers three other great options if you are in need of a healthy snack or breakfast, perfect for daytime medicating; fresh granola, granola bars and roasted seed mix. I particularly enjoyed the roasted seed mix because it is a blend of raw pumpkin and sunflower seeds, grown without pesticides that they slow roast the seeds with their strain specific cannabutter and sea salt. These are a great option instead of munching on a bag of chips.

Their full line of products include the flasQ, a 20oz infused drink in several flavors and strain specific options. MIST!, their sublingual spray. tinQture, a sublingual oral tincture. Along with a 12oz drink and capsules. The sativa agave tincture is simply divine. The agave Take Flight tincture is both sweet and smooth. You can use it in a cup of tea or even just drop it under your tongue. It is delicious and I found myself going back for more every so often. Watch out though, the entire bottle contains 600mg. The sativa MIST! - as you know, I do like my sativas - is really uplifting and discreet. It comes in a 100mg, childproof spray bottle. It is allnatural, gluten-free, vegan, caffeine free, low glycemic and lab tested. MIST! is the perfect discreet daytime medicating option. L OCAL NEWS: MEGHAN FARMER CONTRIBUTOR

TRY 5 MILLIGRAMS

As Oregon became the third state in the nation to legalize recreational cannabis for adults 21 and over, concern began to grow amongst members of the community of the potential safety and public health risks associated with edibles. While the legislative and regulatory process began in early 2015, misinformation and over sensationalized media articles were misdirecting the public. There emerged those amongst the Oregon cannabis industry who wanted to help change this public misconception and help educate the public on how to consume edibles in a safe and responsible way. One of these people, was David McNicoll, owner of cannabis-infused cupcake company, Dave’s Space Cakes, he became involved in state politics and helped educate legislators about edible-cannabis products. Having realized the benefits of edible cannabis over the past 9 years as a member of the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program, McNicoll made it his mission to further his educational efforts and better inform the public about the advantages of consuming edible cannabis, by explaining what edibles are, and how to properly understand dosage for people new to ingesting edible cannabinoid products. The end result was the formation of OREC, the Oregon Responsible Edibles Council. Starting from the ground up, McNicoll reached out to other Oregon edible-makers on the grassroots level, and gathered support from within the industry, eventually growing OREC into a nonprofit trade association consisting of over 20 member businesses of Oregon’s edible cannabis industry. McNicoll, Chair of OREC, formed the group to also help bring Oregon small businesses together. “The legalization process presents a tremendous opportunity for small Oregonian edible companies”, said McNicoll. “We want Oregon businesses to band together so we can help establish a strong localbased edible market and help each others businesses succeed.” The members of OREC believe the best way to inform the public and hopefully dispel any misinformation about edible marijuana is through education. The first educational campaign created by the group, “Try 5”, encourages first-time users of edible products to begin with no more than 5mg of THC. OREC’s campaign hopes to reduce cases of accidental over-ingestion; and will launch in Oregon in conjunction with the expansion of the Limited Marijuana Retail Product definition to include edibles from Senate Bill 1511-16, projected to go into effect sometime in the spring of 2016. The mission of the “Try 5” campaign is to teach consumers how to consume edibles cautiously when ingesting them for the first time and begin the conversation about the importance of proper dosage. The campaign launch will involve posters and printed handout cards which will be given to state-licensed dispensaries as collateral items for their customers. Stephanie Calderon, Edible Buyer for TJ’s Organic Provisions, a dispensary and OREC member-business in Eugene, OR, is excited to display the “Try 5” poster. “OREC is a valuable resource to train budtenders and dispensary staff when it comes to edible education for the public”, said Calderon. “Education is the key to helping your customer understand that starting low will allow for a more positive first time edible experience.” Keep an eye out for future public education campaigns from OREC concerning parental education, tips for proper at-home storage that will help keep products out of the hands of children and a fact-based & effective youth prevention program. OREC is an advocate for child resistant containers and packaging requirements that will help prevent accidental exposure of edible marijuana and hopefully dispel any fear of child consumption. OPHELIA CHONG

Founding & Managing Partner, Stock Pot Images

“I really feel that being a woman in this industry is powerful and that we have the capability to connect on a much deeper level, than say the men do – I am a sativa girl!” THE POTENT PHOTOGRAPHER - A little over a year ago Ophelia Chong, a Photography teacher at The Art Center in Pasadena, was taking a shower and realized that there were no stock agencies specializing in cannabis imagery. That is precisely the moment that Stock Pot Images was born. A month after her revelation, she was funded and the LLC was established. Ophelia explained to me that the standard stock image sites like Getty only offer limited and stereotypical images, “Anything you see on Getty are stereotypical images of what prohibition has done their view of the cannabis user, what they would label as “stoners”. It has nothing to do with our community and doesn’t even look real. Stock Pot only photographs real users and real communities. You can’t fake out a cannabis user, they want authenticity.” “The name just came from stock photography and pot pictures, so Stock Pot just came out of the blue. Plus, you can’t tell its cannabis right away. It is not as direct as “weed porn” or “weed pics” it has a little more of a playful tone with cannabis,” Ophelia noted about the name of her company. Her background is in Photography and has been a creative director specializing in book and magazine design for over two decades. She earned a Photography BFA from the Art Center and is an instructor at her alma mater in the photo dept. since 2010. Before the cannabis industry, she worked for film companies and film festivals and moved into print and design after that. She explained that she got into the industry because of a family member who has a terminal illness and began using cannabis to help alleviate some of the symptoms. She also told me that she is not really a smoker but will vape from time to time but she jokingly admitted she mostly does edibles because she likes to snack. When we discussed what it is like for her as a female in the industry, she said, “I think it’s easier to be a woman. There is less competition. People don’t want to go into it because it’s illegal and they have a misconception of what it is.” She also told me she loves the women in the industry because we are all quick to help one another and have not “reached the bi**hy factor” yet. She also stated that as opposed to other industries, men and women are on more of an even playing field; it’s not so much about women as it is that there are difficulties for people in general. In the ever-changing market we live in, large companies are in fear of being shut down – this is something non-discriminant to women or men. Ophelia is also the founder of Asian Americans for the Cannabis Education along with Monica Lo and Tiffany Wu. This is a group of Asian Americans that want to educate other Asians about cannabis. Ophelia explained to me that statistics show the two largest groups against cannabis legislation

MEGAN GRAHAM

Owner, GEMM Farms

“The women get it, the boys are just beginning to.” THE CARING CBD SPECIALIST - Meghan Graham is the Owner of GEMM Farms, a hemp CBD Company based in Oregon. She explained how she go into the industry “My mother-in-law has always been a medical marijuana patient since the inception of the OMMP. In the beginning, she had little luck finding a reliable and consistent grower. So, in August 2010, when I was 8 months pregnant with twins, we got our first clones and she assigned us as her official growers. It was until 2013, that we decided we’d like to make a business out of it and thus, GEMM Farms was born.” Her husband had to have a complete knee replacement in 2014 and they did not want him to have to take opiates, so they went to a local clinic and learned how to make topicals. They shared it with her mother-in-law and other patients. They received such amazing feedback that they new they were on to something and continued to push forward. She described her passion and what drove her into the industry, “We keep it really close to helping the patients. My patients are my influence. How can I best help them? Let’s grow some great weed. Let’s make them brownies and topicals!” Her explanation of what it was like to be a woman in the beginning versus now was pretty spot, “At first it was kind of like knocking on the door of a boys club. Now, as it’s progressed everything has changed, it’s welcoming. We are beginning to find like-minded people and it has been very rewarding.” Megan also went on to explain how she feels that if the women in this industry continue to support one another they will go far because they have business skills as well as the nurturing side of being a woman. food science:

HOW SWEET IT IS...

CANNABIS EDIBLES AND SWEETENERS RACHEL ZEMSER STAFF EDITOR Lets face it, we all love sugar! Not only does it taste great, but it’s incredibly functional providing bulk and structure to baked goods, confections and a multitude of other food products. Sugar is amazing—except that we all need to limit our intake. Sugar leads to diabetes, obesity, and cavities, amongst a ton of other health problems. Unfortunately, this wonderful delicious functional ingredient can only be consumed in small amounts. The cannabis infused food product industry is growing rapidly but due to the gray legalities of state and federal regulations, the “Edible” creators are relegated to creating their products in commercial kitchens and are limited to making simple products like candy, baked goods and chocolate bars. Sugar based products are fairly safe, shelf stable and appeal to the masses. Just a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down! There are many sugar substitutes out there that can help the nutritional profile of your product but most have drawbacks. High intensity sweeteners like Stevia and monk fruit may not have any calories, but they also don’t have any bulk or functional capabilities. Have you ever tried to make a cake out of Stevia—not possible! There are also sugar alcohols out there like Sorbitol, Xylitol and Erythritol, which are commonly found in gum and sugar-free candy. Consumers need to be careful when eating products that contain sugar alcohol. If you have ever eaten a whole chocolate bar made with sorbitol, you know why—it can cause grumbly stomachs

and gas in sensitive consumers. There are two new exciting sweet ingredients on the market that can help you, the edibles formulator, control sugar in your products but still provide the bulk you need to create those products! You may have seen the word Chicory Root Fiber, Inulin or the scarier sounding “Oligiosaccharide” on labels of food products that have a nice dose of fiber. All of these ingredients are in the same family of “prebiotics”. Prebiotics are a category of functional fiber ingredients that stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial “good” bacteria in the colon. Most prebiotics come in both syrup and powder form and have less than 3% glucose. The powder form is typically around 95% fiber and the syrup, which is a blend of the powder and water- is around 70%. They both have a light sweet taste (about 50-60% of sucrose). Prebiotics essentially can be used to replace all or part of the sugar in your formula with fiber. Your carbohydrate content can stay the same, but your grams of sugar are now grams of fiber and your product will have a lower glycemic index. You can call it “dietary fiber” on your label and educate your consumer on the benefits of prebiotics in their food. The company Vita Fiber (bioneutra.ca) sells prebiotic fiber in retail sized containers or in 25 KG containers. It can be used in candy, granola, beverages, trail mix and anything that could have or would have contained sugar. Manufacturers take notelike with all fiber products, some consumers may be sensitive to large quantities consumed in one sitting. Make sure your portion sizes have no more than 5 or 6 grams of “dietary fiber” per serving.

The second ingredient worth exploring is a bit more complex and difficult to procure and it has some development restrictions. Allulose is a brand new sugar replacement on the market that virtually no one is using… yet! Allulose is a very low calorie (0.39 calories per gram) sugar that tastes exactly like sugar, because it is! It official sugar name is D-Psicose, and it is one of the many different sugars that exists in nature in very small quantities. It was first identified in wheat and has since been found in corn, figs and raisins. It is a monosaccharide (simple sugar) that is recognized as a carbohydrate and absorbed by the body but is not metabolized, so it is essentially calorie free and has no impact on blood glucose levels. Allulose is not yet available in supermarkets but manufacturers can order it directly and use it in moderate amounts in their food product creations. Allulose has received Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status from the FDA. There are two companies that sell allulose- Tate &Lyle and a non-GMO version from The Anderson Global Group. Prebiotic fibers and D-Psicose are both great ways to reduce sugar, increase fiber and help consumers manage their glucose response. Unlike high intensity sweeteners like monk fruit and stevia, which must be used in combination with maltodextrins, these two ingredients already have bulking capacity and can provide the function you need without the calories or sugar. Women and cannabis throughout history

PAUL FIMBRES STAFF EDITOR

Looking back at world history, it can often seem like all the most famous events are dominated by men. Women were often unfairly relegated to positions of homemaking and childrearing, limiting their impact on the geopolitical landscape. Even in the world of cannabis, figureheads have historically trended towards male figuresCheech and Chong, Willie Nelson, Bob Marley, Snoop Dogg, and many more have all played the roles of famous stoners in the 20th century. However, things in marijuana culture haven’t been quite the “boy’s club” that one would assume at first. As it turns out, there are a number of cases in the advancement of cannabis as a medicinal and recreational tool where women either beat men to the punch, or discovered entirely new fields of benefit and purpose. Going back to the dawn of human civilization, childbirth has been a historically deadly and painful activity. Even today, in the era of powerful modern medicine, a standard pregnancy epidural is little more than an injection of morphine. The ancient Egyptians has something a bit more natural for their child birthing medicinessalves made from cannabis. civilization. It has continued to be used by various cultures for similar reasons throughout the rest of human history.

History is full of moments where cannabis was used for pain relief. Perhaps the most high-profile case of a figure in history using cannabis to treat an ailment is the nineteenth century monarch Queen Victoria. Although obviously something of a misnomer, she is sometimes referred to as “the first medical marijuana patient”. Queen Victoria was noted to use the plant as a way of soothing her menstrual cramps, marking a uniquely feminine foray into the realm of medical marijuana.

More recently, Valerie Corral of “Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana” has been one of the major activists involved in the process of legalization. For any patients in California who has benefitted from California’s adoption of medical marijuana laws, they have Valerie Corral to thank. AH WARNER

Founder & CEO, Cannabis Basics

“Women work as a community and in general we’re not threatened by one another. We have a collaborative mindset that most guys just don’t have.” THE LEADING LOBBYIST- In 1994 Ah Warner, Founder and CEO of Cannabis Basics, a lifestyle brand based in Washington walked into Fremont Hemp Company and found Jack Herer’s book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes. It was then her life changed and Cannabis Basics was born in 1995 as a result. Since the 90’s, Ah has been a cannabis activist. She told me about a photo of her two-year-old running around the capital while they working on the 1997 hemp initiative. However, she explained that she never really embraced the label activist until recently. She was watching what was happening in her state’s legislation and realized that there were changes that needed to be made. “I looked into the future, I saw what I needed and what I wanted for my company. I knew I did not want to be in the adult-use stores and saw the writing on the wall that they were doing away with the medical industry. So, I reached out to Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, showed her my products and from that moment forward she was behind me. She knew what I was asking for, and what I wanted was to get my products defined differently than the intoxicating cannabis products,” explained Ah. On January 22, 2015, Ah and her co-author Kari Boiter, were able to introduce the Cannabis Health and Body Aid bills into both the House and Senate, with bipartisan sponsorship on both. Due to her lobbying efforts, she got every legislator samples of her product and the bills were ultimately signed on June 30th, and were enacted July 1st. With Ah’s bill they were able to define cannabis health and beauty aids (or “CHABA”, as Ah likes to say) as anything less than .3%, for topical use only and non-intoxicating. They have also opened the marketplace to sell to mainstream locations and cannabis health and beauty aids were removed from the Washington State Controlled Substances Act. This is the first time in history that anything related to cannabis was removed out of the CSA in Washington State and the first time something has been done like this in the country. She also started the International Cannabis Health and Beauty Aids Alliance. “It is not a standards and ethics group, but more of a think tank and support group for people who do what I do, that make these narrowly defined products,” said Ah. Her degree from the University of Washington is a Bachelors in Women Studies with an emphasis on sex studies, so she has a pretty solid education and learned a long time ago that “If the boys don’t want to play nice, I just ignore it and go my own path,” Warner explained. Additionally, in May of 2013, Ah founded Women of Weed, a private social club, and is a guiding member of both NORML Women of Washington and MJBA Women’s Alliance supporting education and activism around cannabis and ensuring that women have several seats at every table. Learn everything you can and then share that knowledge because at the end of the day we are all working together, toward the same goal.” THE MEDIA MAVEN - B. Le Grand, our “Fearless Leader,” as I like to call her, is the genius behind EdiblesList.com and Edibles Magazine. She founded the company in 2010, while living in San Diego. The Edibles List was created out of need, as most companies are. The Edibles List was born after B moved from San Francisco to San Diego and noticed that the cannabis markets were completely different between the two cities. In San Francisco, a patient could get edibles and product from a reliable source. “In San Diego however, shops would open and close. If you wanted to get your meds you’d have to wait four hours for a creepy dude to show up at your house, with a backpack full of pot. I walked into a dispensary and their edible selection consisted of a spoon dipped in chocolate,” explained B. Edibles List began as a submission form to collect data on all edible vendors out there and what they carry. It has since grown to be the number one source for finding cannabis infused products. In 2013, Edibles Magazine, the first and only magazine dedicated to edibles, topicals, tinctures and vapes, launched in California, Colorado and Washington, simultaneously. Today, the magazine has expanded to Oregon, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii, with subscribers nationwide. B graduated high school early and left Hawaii to pursue something bigger. In 2002, at the age of 16, she moved to San Francisco. There, she went to school for advertising and began her career in multimedia and online marketing. She worked for an interior design firm that gave her all the tools she needed to succeed. She’s had her own web design and marketing firm, Designs By Bo, for 14 years, and was the Creative Director and Editor-in-Chief at Runway Magazine from 2011-2012. B reiterated some solid advice she said her dad always gave her, and that we have all probably heard before: “Fake it until you make it! Once you make it, you wont have to fake it anymore.” She’s has been on her own and working for herself since she was 16. It takes a certain kind of person to uproot themselves at such an early age and embark on a new journey, but what was the alternative, “Stay in paradise with my friends and never leave?” Now that you mention it, that doesn’t sound so bad. Does it? She spoke about how together we can impact the future. “If we can dispel the lies surrounding cannabis, since so many people don’t understand all of the lies that originally criminalized cannabis - then at some point, our kids and further generations will not know what it’s like for cannabis to be an illegal plant, with a demonized persona. We are at a turning point in history, we are at the end of prohibition on cannabis,” said B. In addition to running one of the best companies in our industry, she is the lead singer, guitarist and keyboardist for her band, Le Grand, a cross between Adele and 50s doo-wop. I happen to have some insider knowledge on this woman, and I know what she has done to keep her company thriving and in an upward trajectory. It is important to note that B is without a doubt one of the most hardworking people I know. She has a solid, business savvy, mind with a compassionate and giving way about her, and she genuinely fights for the patients and the plant. If you would like more information about B.
