The soft creamy texture paired with an impeccable mix of spices and flavors. Something Chocolate is relatively new on the scene but has certainly taken the industry by storm. The four signature flavors Black Betty, Back In Black, Black Water and Black Dog all have integrated flavor profiles like Amaretto and Hazelnut that compliment the obviously high quality Belgian chocolate that is being used. The creators of the Something

More and more companies are realizing that in order to maintain market share they need to create more of an experience for the consumer; Something Chocolate has done just that. What really sets them apart is that they began their chocolate journey with non-infused truffles. MEDIBLE REVIEW:

RACHELLE CUMMINGS STAFF EDITOR To Whom It May Cannabis Chocolates produced by The Art of Edibles Collective are handcrafted truffles and boozy bonbons, and are truly bringing another level of elegance into the cannabis industry! To say these are gourmet chocolates is an understatement. When you first see the packaging you are drawn to it, much like a stunning piece of art. Their brand identity and packaging were designed to ease the stigma around cannabis products and shy away the classic “stoner” lifestyle by presenting them in a very sophisticated, artful and approachable way. The Art of Edibles developed a signature hand-pressing process that never involves butane, chemicals or heavy machinery in order to create our cannabis oil. Organic cannabis flowers are pressed with organic coconut oil, which is then distilled twice for maximum purity and flavor, and finally, mixed with the remaining ingredients. The finished products are some of the best chocolates (both infused and non-infused) I have ever tasted. To Whom It May honors the holistic and healthful intent of medicinal cannabis by only using premium ingredients and organic options whenever possible. Their chocolates contain no dairy, no gluten, no refined sugars, no soy and no lecithin or any other emulsifiers. One of the most important points to note about this company is their dosing and distribution channels are different than what we are used to. The owner explained that he created 14

and twenty-four. In the box of four you get one flavor with all four dosages. The eight piece set you receive one flavor and two of each dosage. The twenty-four-piece box includes one of each dosage, in every flavor, plus two non-medicated pieces of chocolate as a bonus. Unlike most companies in the industry, To Whom It May is exclusively distributed through their own delivery collective, The Art of Edibles, specializes solely in edibles, as the culinary arts is their specialty. This means a patient can purchase the product directly through The Art of Edibles instead of having to track the product down to various shops in LA that may or may not currently have stock. Instead a Los Angeles based patient can go directly to www. theartofedibles.com to sign up with their collective and have chocolates delivered straight to them.

range of dosages available in the U.S. including four distinct dosages: 2 ½mg, 5mg, 15mg and 45mg. This tiered dosing approach allows a patient with any tolerance and to medicate the way they see fit.. Although in places like Colorado and Washington the suggested dosage is 10mg; unfortunately, for some that is still too much THC. Within a single box you can gradually build your tolerance, you could start with the 2 ½mg chocolate and work your way up gradually to the 45mg. This company offers a unique buying experience. Along with the four dosages, they offer four flavors and three different box sets of: four, eight

To Whom It May is a sophisticated edibles brand; it is also a state of mind, free of tasteless judgment about how people incorporate cannabis into their lives. They aim to provide a meticulously measured and irresistibly delicious edible experience so that people feel empowered to express themselves fully as they are, and to use cannabis as a tool for engaging even more meaningfully in the world around them. MEDIBLE FEATURE: KYMBER WARD STAFF EDITOR Over the past year the subscription box model has grown across all industries, including cannabis. We know there are several existing subscription boxes in our industry but none tailored to a part of the market that we know and love: edibles. We learned about Shades of Green some time ago, they are a company offering a subscription box catered to patients who enjoy or are interested in learning about edibles. Shades of Green was created to be a “filter” for patients to easily discover new edibles, without having to rely on their own trial and error. As the company began their market research, the most common response was that someone had tried a “bud brownie” before, but had an underwhelming experience. It was apparent that there was a real need to change the perception of edibles in this industry. There are many different “shades” of “green” out there, it’s just difficult for patients to access them and thus, Shades of Green was born. Soon after, the founders began compiling a list of gourmet macarons, refreshing beverages and savory snacks! The founders of Shades of Green are two Midwest guys who were always bombarded by alcohol advertisements and exposed to negative cannabis propaganda outlining it as being an illicit “drug”. They enjoyed cannabis edibles and saw a need in the market that does not necessarily replace a regular dispensary visit but instead is a way supplement the market. To receive a Shades of Green box you have to begin by becoming a member of their collective. Go to www.shadesof. green to pre-verify. You must have a valid doctor’s recommendation from a licensed physician as well as a valid state ID. Then you choose the package you would like. You can choose the package that works best for you. Please note: shipping is already included. Then mid-month you receive a package with various edibles each month. No box is ever the same. Currently, the packages they offer are month based, so you can purchase a 1-month, 3-month or 12-month

SHADES OF GREEN subscription. However, we have heard they are changing it, so you can choose different quantities of edibles you would receive each month. Services like the Shades of Green box and delivery collectives are convenient in cities like Los Angeles where there is a concentrated amount of dispensaries with either an overwhelming amount of smokeless options or absolutely none. Shades of Green is also great for the patient who loves to dabble and try new things or a novice patient who is interested in learning about edibles while trying new things to

see what may work best for them. However, despite the convenience of these services there may be a grim future for delivery collectives on the horizon in California. AB 266 has completely negated the delivery collective system from its licensing options. Companies who want to distribute will have to get a license to distribute only to licensed retail locations. Luckily we still have quite some time left before laws are implemented and by then who knows what will have been amended. The founders of Shades of Green are on a mission to unite collectives and rally for a direct-to-consumer distribution license to be added into legislation. We are proud to say that the Shades of Green January box will feature a few of our top picks! It’s safe to

say that The Edibles List knows edibles, so we are happy to share a few of our faves with our readers. The companies included in our box are: • Sensi Chews sensiproducts.com • Yummi Karma yummikarma.com • Miss Mary Jane’s Edibles missmaryjanesedibles.com • Remedy Plus remedyplusedibles.com • Goodies by Magooch gbmagooch.com • Varavo varavo.com And as an added bonus Lazy Mae’s Edibles and Canna Candys are included! We are giving away a Shades of Green x Edibles List Box. If interested check out our instagram @ edibleslist and text EDIBLES to 63975 to better your chances of winning! In the future the company plans to give the patients more control over selecting the products that go into their individual box each month, and also expand our product offering to areas such as CBD, high-end flower, and even concentrates! Although there are several boxes on the market most focus on smoking accessories. They wanted to fill the gap in the market with their unique take on infused edibles. The founders are passionate about foodcannabis pairings and the real need for safe access to quality medicine. These guys strive to change the many negative associations that come with cannabis. Shades of Green views edibles as a much healthier alternative to inhaling smoke. Their November Box, featured Jambo Superfoods, one of the healthiest edibles on the market (gluten free, raw & vegan). This is a good example of watching trends and paying attention to where the industry headed. “Let Food Be Thy Medicine, and Medicine Be Thy Food” – Hippocrates. This sentiment is truly something the folks at Shades of Green are trying to protect. Our team at Edibles List is looking forward to a new box every month! MEDIBLE REVIEW:

ZASP MEDICATED BEVERAGES

RACHELLE CUMMINGS STAFF EDITOR Zasp offers a full line of highly refreshing cannabis infused drinks. The drinks are available in Black Cherry, Pink Lemonade, Tangerine and Tropical Punch; all of which are available in both 80mg and 120mg. I really enjoyed the Pink Lemonade, which I tried in 120mg and the Black Cherry flavor in 80mg. The Pink Lemonade was light and refreshing with a slight hint of cannabis. The 120mg drink was highly potent. I only drink part of it at first but there was a quick onset. The Black Cherry flavor reminded me of a sweet tart. I really enjoyed these drinks, as they were both thirst quenching and satiating. Zasp offers a much smaller serving size than their competitors. Instead of a 16 fl oz serving size, Zasp’s serving is only 8.4 fl oz, with only 60 calories and 15 grams of sugar. The company uses organic cane sugar to sweeten their drinks, which I really appreciated because the Strawberry Lemonade did not have that gross fake sugar taste. Their packaging is clean and professional; it includes ingredients, nutrition facts, all medical warnings, contact information and basically anything you would see on an FDA certifies product – even though we know the FDA does not certify cannabis infused products. A couple of interesting features we have never seen on packaging before are the strength meter giving you a strength meter between 1 – 5 and shows what the strength level of that particular drink is. The consumption advice gives a recommended timeline in which you can control your own dosing. If you are looking for a refreshing cannabis infused drink, look no further than Zasp. COFFEE COMPARISON

WHICH BREW IS BEST FOR YOU? We decided to put California’s most well-known coffee companies side-by-side to see which company truly makes the best cannabis infused coffee out there. We purchased products from House of Jane, Ganja Grindz and Pot-O-Coffee and decided to do a blind taste testing at the Edibles List offices. Below are the pros and cons we felt about each company. Cheers! Ganja Grindz Coffee Company 100mg G-Cup www.ganjagrindz.com

Pot-O-Coffee 100mg O-Cup www.potocoffee.com

Available Products: Single Serve G-Cups (Decaf & Regular), Cider (G-Cups), Bottled Cold Brew, Teabags, Coffee Filters Packaging: PROS: Ganja Grindz uses bold colors which are easily associated with cannabis in a consumer’s mind - red, yellow and green. It outlines a full ingredient list, nutrition facts, bar code & lot numbers (which means they must be able to track a bad batch if someone gets sick or did not feel medicated), best by date, type of cannabis identifier (Indica, Sativa, Hybrid), dosage, compliance information and even showcases the exact CO2 oil they use, The Clear CO2 oil. CONS: They use a sticker that you have to peel off before use. Aroma: PROS: Immediately upon brewing we were instantly hit with a rich, complex, delicious smell of coffee. CONS: Once you detect the cannabis smell it begins to take over the coffee fragrance. Flavor: PROS: This coffee is obviously made from a high quality blend. We enjoyed the actual taste of this coffee. Just as it smells, the flavors are rich and complex, even a little bitter. CONS: The CO2 oil leaves an odd aftertaste in your mouth. Potency: PROS: Ganja Grindz offers their G-Cups in 25mg and 50mg. Their dosages are perfect for the typical marijuana consumer with an average tolerance level. The high was clean and many of us loved starting our day with cannabis AND coffee and were still able to maintain productivity. CONS: For this test we actually had to reach out to the makers to receive a comparable dosage to the others. Ganja Grindz should offer a better range of potency levels. Perhaps a higher dose for the people who truly need 100mg+ to medicate properly and a lower dose for true novice patients beginning at 10mg or 15mg or even lower. Infusion Method: PROS: Ganja Grindz flat out tells the consumer that their product is made using The Clear “ultra premium cannabis oil”. It is really nice to know exactly where the oil is coming from. The transparency is appreciated because at the end of the day this is medicine and we want to know what are consuming. CONS: We made more than one cup of their coffee and noticed that the oil does separate from the coffee and you can actually see the tiny oil droplets.

Available Products: Single Serve-O-Cups & Pods (Regular & Hemp CBD), Teas – offered in Hemp CBD as well (O-Cups & Pods), Cocoa (O-Cups & Pods) Packaging: PROS: We liked their branding. The logo is clean and has that kind of label that actually makes an impression on the consumer. Pot-O-Coffee puts their single serve O-Cups in actual child safe packaging. CONS: However, we also know that many people use the K-Cup stands to hold their coffee pods and that packaging will not work. While the child safe packaging includes dosage information and preparation instructions coffee pod itself only has dosage and compliance information. There is no consistency on information. Aroma: PROS: It smells like coffee… CONS: But the cannabis scent pretty much overpowers the coffee scent. Potency: PROS: According to their website, they offer their Single Serve-O-Cups in 10mg, 50mg & 100mg. Their product selection offers dosages that allow people to choose how heavily they would like to medicate. CONS: Unfortunately, we were unable to drink the entire cup of Pot-O-Coffee to get a true feel of the potency. When we brewed the coffee we noticed not just particulates in the cup, but a substance resembling cannabis wax floated up to the top. Pot-O-Coffee coffee leaves a residue on the inside of the cup where the coffee levels off. It is incredibly unappealing and since we did not know what that substance was we chose to not drink more than a sip or two. All of us cared to avoid ingesting the unknown clumps. Please note: We did brew more than one of the products to ensure it not a fluke. Flavor: CONS: This coffee was not the best. It is too Earthy for me – it tasted like coffee, cannabis and dirt. Infusion Method: CONS: All we know is that it is infused with “natural cannabis oil” – according to their website. No further information is provided anywhere. We are can only assume those mystery clumps may be oil solidifying that was not properly infused. Overall, it’s blatantly apparent a lot of money went into creating the packaging for this product. It is unfortunate that they did not quality control their product before rolling it out to the dispensary market. We wouldn’t recommend this one.

House of Jane 80mg C-Cup www.houseofjane.com Available Products: Single Serve C-Cups & Pods (Decaf & Regular & High CBD), Instant Coffee, Creamers, Teas (C-Cups & Teabags), Bottled Teas, Hot Chocolate, Powders, Edibles Packaging: PROS: House of Jane’s packaging is clear and informative. Included are the ingredients, dosage, compliancy information and warnings. They do not include a lot of ‘fluff’. They also indicate whether the coffee is infused with Indica, Sativa, Hybrid cannabis. CONS: The packaging can get lost amidst the other companies on K-Cup rack, as they used muted colors. Aroma: PROS: It smells like a good cup of coffee – bold and flavorful. CONS: If this cup of coffee were sitting on the counter next to an uninfused cup, you would have no idea, which is which. This is concerning because without some sort of ability to detect cannabis after brewing it could allow for people to accidently dose themselves by confusing the cups. Flavor: PROS: The taste of cannabis is almost undetectable. The coffee is dark, bold and flavorful – all around it makes for a pretty good cup of Jane. CONS: Some may say that the lack of cannabis flavor is a con. The coffee was sweeter than what I would like without adding any sort of additional sweetener. Also, there were several coffee grounds that made it through the filter and into the cup. Potency: PROS: HOJ offers their C-Cups in 20mg, 80mg & 200mg. After consuming the 80mg, which was a good dose for consumption in the morning, I was medicated but able to continue my day. Infusion Method: PROS: They use a high grade CO2 oil. The oil for the most part did not separate. Additionally, they use Maltodextrin, a food additive with some associated health risks and is not a suitable choice for someone with Diabetes.

CHICAGO OPENS ITS FIRST DISPENSARY

JEREMY TAYLOR STAFF EDITOR Chicago’s nickname “The Windy City” is quite appropriate this month as the winds of change will be permeating the city with the opening of it’s first medical cannabis dispensary. After two years of due diligence and legal hurdles, Dispensary 33 received their official license to sell medical cannabis on November 20 but as reported by the ChicagoReader.com, all staff members still need to be certified by the state, and patients need to fill out a ‘dispensary selection form’ to register Dispensary 33 as their official dispensary as well as a boatload of other forms (like new patient registration), before patients can start lawfully obtaining their medical cannabis from Dispensary 33. The official opening is scheduled for the first week of December.

In the meantime, as a thank you for their support, any member of the community who may be curious about the medical cannabis facility have been invited in for an open house tour of Dispensary 33. This gives a chance for those who may not be patients and otherwise would never see the inside of a dispensary to see what it’s all about. “People have no idea what the inside of these places are going to look like and if you don’t have a card you may never know what the inside of these places are going to look like,” says Richard Park who heads the shops research and client education department. “Since we got such good public approval, we thought we owed it to the community to be like, ‘Come check us out.’” For citizens who need help acquiring patient status, Dispensary 33’s staff is offering professional assistance as a courtesy to the public. They ask that those who need this assistance to contact them by sending an email.

On November 23, the owners, staff, local politicians, and activists for medical cannabis were present for the official blue ribbon cutting ceremony as they patiently jump through the states final legislative hoops. Sen. Heather Steans stated, “I think it was a long time coming,” just before cutting the blue ribbon. She continued, “It was years of debate around getting this bill passed, which I think is very straightforward and humane. We have certainly one of, I think, the most restricted medical cannabis bills of any of the states, [but] I think many many people are going to benefit from it.”

There’s a growing trend around the world that pairs perfectly with the new wave of cannabis legalization in the United States and abroad: the preference of vacation rentals over hotels. This shift away from the corporate side of lodging makes sense; when tourists want to experience a new city, they don’t just want food and entertainment. Travelers demand a cultural immersion, and staying in private homes provides just the right dose of authentic living for eager visitors. Trip Advisor, Home Away, VRBO, and AirBNB have quickly risen to the top as mainstream sites for consumers to connect with home owners, but the acceptance of cannabis in these websites has been slow to gain traction. What is a poor 420 friendly traveler to do? That’s where BudandBreakfast.com steps in--the leader for connecting like minded individuals in the hospitality industry. One of their premier properties, Bella Vista Estate, provides luxurious large group lodging in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. While encouraging clients to partake legally, staff embrace a healthy way to enjoy cannabis, and are also available for planning your dream itinerary. If you are visiting the region for a holiday, to celebrate a milestone family event, or just hang out with friends, Bella Vista combines the best in Western tradition and modern amenities, and will provide an unforgettable vacation rental experience. Although reunions, retreats, and ski trips have been the most common groups at this estate for the past decade, destination weddings have become extremely popular in the last 5 years, given the resort’s breathtaking panoramic views. Plus, there are very few rules at the estate, so unlike other venues, couples have the freedom to design their big day from start to finish. Recently,

the

LoveandMarij.com started as a way to spark change in the way people think to use cannabis. Having the right to enjoy legal marijuana is tremendous, but I’m on a mission to elevate the social acceptance of WHERE and HOW people should be able to legally recreate! Love and Marij’s creator believes there should be a cannabar next to every open bar at every wedding where the law permits and that anyone who wants to take a limo out on the town to drink the night away should have the option to enjoy cannabis in that limo and have a cannabis infused meal should they choose to. While people in states where marijuana is legal are technically able to enjoy these luxuries, only a handful of business owners will actually allow cannabis on their properties, making it difficult to enjoy cannabis outside of the home. By creating

opportunity to win a free wedding at Bella Vista Estate in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, with Love and Marij and Cultivating Spirits. Love and Marij birthed the concept of a classy cannabis giveaway once CEO (former producer of Pot Barons on MSNBC) Niki McDonald saw how popular the “weeding” industry is for alternative couples. This special contest is co-hosted by Colorado’s premier cannabis event company, Cultivating Spirits, a recognizable brand that has introduced a refined cannabis evening of fun with their unique approach to food, wine and flower for the consumer. The Weeding winners will enjoy over $20,000 worth of prizes for their complimentary union. Whether participants are ambitious tourists, first time users, or seasoned aficionados, Cultivating Spirits and Love and Marij are emphasizing education and safe imbibing practices with their upscale contest. The #IsupportMarijEquality campaign poses to work for the larger goal of helping all see cannabis in a new light–not just contestants. In a time of desperate need for us to help governments, patients and citizens shun the “War on Drugs” mentality, the world is in dire need of mainstream weedings to set the bar for high standards. CEO of Cultivating Spirits, Philip Wolf, is paving the way for what many of us in the cannabis industry strive for: a rebranding of user identity. It is of considerable importance that a marketing and branding guru invests more of his work towards redefining this historical crop, and Mr. Wolf encourages us all to stop focusing on trademarks and dedicate more to the trade. We no longer grow in our basements, hide our passion, or stealthily conceal ourselves as we indulge in this sacred plant. Cultivating Spirits recognizes and employs a proud population that is pro THC and the communal mission; staff members create

a hub of articles and imagery that celebrate new trends in cannabis use, Love and Marij aims to demystify cannabis use in social and upscale settings and inspire more people to enjoy cannabis openly! Love and Marij is inspired by pioneers in the cannabis experience industry like Cultivating Spirits, who hosts sophisticated food, wine & cannabis paring experiences, Buds and Blossoms, who can incorporate cannabis into any floral arrangement and Puff Pass and Paint, where people can legally smoke and express their creative side. We write about cannabis friendly date ideas, real weed weddings and we list vendors that are cannabis friendly. We also have a shop where we highlight gifts perfect for cannabis friendly couples! To help get the message out there, we are hosting

safe and savory occasions for partaking so that clients may step out of the harsh and misleading “stoner” persona, and come out of the closet as sophisticated cannabis supporters. Just as the craft brewer or skilled winery rep is not labeled a drunk or an alcoholic, Mr. Wolf is helping us discover new ways to be marijuana enthusiasts in an upscale fashion. He has gained national recognition for being the sativa sommelier, the innovator of indica, the kush connoisseur. From spearheading initiatives in global events such as Winter X Games in Aspen (guests include multi-millionaires and A-list celebrities), to private honeymoon tours (folks like you and me), Cultivating Spirits has tackled the branding and marketing beast that is inherent around marijuana to rename the game. The company is currently involved in many exciting projects, including the Love and Marij proposition for cannabis equality, proving their business model is much larger than just hospitality. Bella Vista has also partnered with Cultivating Spirits to host Medicinal Mindfulness retreats at the Estate. You can also look for their Cannabis Wedding Expo, set to hit Denver in January. Mr. Wolf recently attended a weeding at Bella Vista for the CEO and founder of BudandBreakfast.com, Shayan Bastani. He and his gorgeous bride, Courtney, were the perfect canna-couple to set the stage for an autumn ceremony and reception. Guests ranged from age 8 months to 80 years, and they tastefully created an atmosphere of respect for the plant and their families. A friendly Cigar and Bud Bar was stationed right by the pool, so folks who hadn’t had a toke since the ‘60s felt perfectly at ease reconnecting with cannabis, and then returning to the tent for the main scene. Read more on the blog post of their special day on Love and Marij.com.

DISPENSARY FEATURE: B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Kind Meds first opened its doors November 6, 2009. A female owned and run medical dispensary, they opened Kind Meds because they observed how expensive medicine was becoming and how patients began losing access to the medicine. Kind Meds is about natural, organic medicine without the harmful side effects that require additional medication to control. They carry bud flower, concentrates, edibles, transdermal patches, topical lotions and salves, CBD oil, tinctures and elixirs.

Kind Meds mission is to provide low-cost quality cannabis to Colorado medical marijuana patients. While they had the opportunity to go recreational, they decided to remain medical just to see how recreational played out. ‘We don’t compromise by using harsh chemicals

KIND MEDS

that create quantity. We believe in quality.” “I believe what sets the store apart from every other medical store is, I know every one of my patients on a personal level, and we are committed to providing quality and consistency. It’s a partnership with the patient because without them Kind Meds wouldn’t have been successful for over 6 years.” Kind Meds, like many others in Colorado, have been deeply affected by the constant regulation change and over regulation of cannabis. Not only do medical shops face steep competition from the recreational stores, recreational shops can grow as much medicine as they want without having to worry about the 30/70 rule. That means they can overproduce and keep their product without having to worry about over production or selling the product within 48 hours. Rec shops are able to thereby lower their prices blowing away any medical competition. With the new medical crackdown in Colorado, patients will have to undergo a more invasive evaluation. They must have a history free of drug abuse, mental or physical abuse and have a history free of mental illnesses. It will soon not be practical for patients to seek medical evaluations. It will be easier for patients to seek out rec shops and pay the recreational taxes. Additionally, new dispensary owners are limited in what they can grow, purchase or transfer within the medical market.

A few weeks ago in mid-late November there was a massive edibles recall for products contaminated with pesticides. Kind Meds absolutely suffered as a result of the massive recalls. Branded, trusted companies were a part of the recall. “If patients saw the name on the product, they became apprehensive and less likely to purchase the items even if they weren’t a part of the recall. One solution was to lower our prices and suffer a loss to move the products.”

Looking towards a brighter future that includes Federal rescheduling of cannabis, medical research with specified results, and a commodity trading, Kind Meds’ owner says, “We would like to see medical patients obtain access to the medicine that they need at an affordable price. We want our patients to obtain quality care by doctors and dispensaries without overreaching policies at an undue expense.”

MALTODEXTRIN

IS IT GOOD OR BAD? RACHEL ZEMSER STAFF EDITOR Shelf stable food products in the supermarket have lots of unrecognizable ingredients in them. Many entrepreneurs are quick to say “I don’t want any of those chemicals in my food,” but they don’t bother to understand exactly what that item is. FORBIDDEN LEAF HEMP SEED OIL SKIN

CARE PRODUCTS

RACHELLE CUMMINGS STAFF EDITOR Forbidden Leaf is a company specializing in high quality hempseed oil skin care. I repeat this is a hemp company NOT a “cannabis” company. Unlike cannabis infused topicals, Forbidden Leaf hemp seed oil topicals only contains trace amounts of the psychoactive profile, THC. Hemp possesses its own healing qualities like Omega-3, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Forbidden Leaf boasts an entire hempseed oil topical line including massage oil, lip balm, hand soap, glycerin soap, body wash and lotion. If you’re looking for a cannabis themed gift for someone who doesn’t get high, Forbidden Leaf is it! Forbidden Leaf’s lip balm is fantastic! When I first opened it, the aroma tantalized my nose; it smelled faintly like cake batter. Upon later inspection I found it is flavored with organic vanilla bean. It does not feel oily on your lips and goes on smoothly and stays on. One of my biggest complaints about lip balm is the amount of beeswax used in the product. Lip balm is usually oily and thick and the beeswax actually makes me breakout, but not Forbidden Leaf’s lip balm! The Forbidden Leaf body lotion is simply divine. It smells delightful and is made using a mix of hempseed oil, chamomile, Japanese green tea, etc. The lotion comes in two fragrances, unscented and California Sunshine, which is a mix of pink grapefruit, sweet orange, mango and tea rose. California Sunshine smells almost good enough to eat! This lotion is fantastic for extreme dry skin conditions. Their hemp body wash and hemp hand soap are other exciting products of theirs sure to get people’s attention as well. patient feature: DR . ALLEN MILLER STAFF EDITOR My name is Dr. Allen Miller, DC, DACBSP; I am a chiropractor with a specialty in Sports Medicine. I was the team physician for numerous international Track & Field Teams and accompanied them to multiple meets and ultimately to the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. In my off time, I raise horses, guide back country horseback camping and hunting trips. I have competed on horses professionally and have the scars to prove it. In the years prior to beginning my life in chiropractic and sports medicine, I was the bodyguard for celebrities beginning with Dinah Shore. To say the least, I have led a very exciting but physically taxing life. I have broken almost every bone in my body, and on one hunt 7 years ago, I was several miles in the back country and my horse slipped, falling crushing my left foot and fracturing my right ankle and leg. After riding the 12 miles back to the truck, it started to snow, resulting in hypothermia and frostbite to my feet bilaterally. This short strip resulted in severe nerve damage in both feet, along with open fractures and chronic pain that required four surgeries to correct. Without a great explanation of every horse that has bucked me off, or every accident, and repairative surgical technique I had to endure, suffice to say if it weren’t for scar tissue I would not be standing. As a result of all these crashes, I was taking 1012 Norcos a day to be able to walk and function in a very highly physical life. Over the last few years, it’s been harder to get this level of Norco, Vicoden or the other pain opioids because the insurance companies are requiring a 50% reduction of these prescriptions by 2018. This family of Opiates are analgesic alkaloid compounds found naturally in the opium poppy plant Papaver somniferum.[1] The psychoactive compounds found in the opium plant include morphine, codeine, and thebaine.(, p. 1) The opioids were the drug of choice, it was great for the patient, and even better for the doctor because the patient was happy, he was drugged out of his mind, but happy. Off and on, through injuries, broken bones, stabbings and reconstructive surgeries I traveled down prescription hell. The pills were great, they let me work, think and keep up with my unique lifestyle. The flipside is you have to “whore” yourself, and convince a doctor that regardless of the extensive history of injuries you have had, you still have pain. Because it’s becoming harder and harder to obtain Opioids, I investigated cannabis solutions, subsequently obtained a recommendation and started medicating myself. This is where the fun really begins; the path to finding the right combination of MMJ strains is arduous. For the most part, the “budtender” in essence is acting like your pharmacist providing product advice based on several factors, personal use, research and patient interaction. These people are savant’s regarding the plants, the chemical structure it actions, everything. However they don’t know the other disease process of the body, the impact of the aging process, lack of hormones, aging and all the factors that cascade forward into the current symptoms one has due to a disease. The body reacts, adapts, evolves and changes to different factors allowing the body to function.

54

KICKING OPIOID ADDICTION WITH

Where the work comes in is finding the right dosage of which strain to use for your condition. This is very personal, however, the purpose of this article is to explain the rationale behind the products I used and how I got off opioids without withdrawals, loss in function, or production. The following is my personal journey and my analysis. There are two types of pain, mental and physical, for sake of space I will not describe the anatomy of the pain structures. For this purpose, I’m going to speak to the subjective component of Opioid addiction. My biggest fear was and still is I would be stuck in a situation my disabilities rendered me helpless. I kept a pain pill in my pocket that was my crutch if something happened. After obtaining the recommendation for MMJ, without guidance whatsoever I headed to different dispensaries. I did not tell my doctor that I was going to try MMJ to treat my pain. I did bring up the subject, but I was told he would stop seeing me as a patient if I did use cannabis. I have tried most products available for pain, and this is not an incitement of other products, this is what I found works for my me and subsequently a lot of my patients. As I stated, you have two areas that are going to report pain, whether the pain is real or not is immaterial, that’s another issue, right now the brain has been rewarded every time a person takes an opioid, In essence, you are rewarding the brain for having pain. The more pain, the more pills regardless of the actual level of pain experienced. In my case, I see patients, write reports and manage the marketing for 50 clinics internationally. I, like other patients cannot be “high.” I need to be effective, with this said, and based on my history, blood tests, and following a physical exam with Dr. Stephanie King at Dedicated To Health Medical Group, we decoded that I would start on a regime of 40mg of an edible a day to be divided at 20mg during day for pain and again before bed for sleep. I decided on a high CBD, low THC formula to work at my level. I wanted a low THC level as it helps the CBD’s work better, but because I was taking long term opioids I would have withdrawals, and I can’t have that in my environment nor do I have time for rehab. One other thing to consider that rapidly came to my attention, cannabis is not like prescription drugs, there is no immediacy. I realize this is elementary however it’s a complex issue to the chronic pain patient taking opioids; we patients have been conditioned for years to take a prescribed amount over a prescribed amount of time with expected results. In the case of cannabis, it takes some more time than others to see positive pain killing effects, which is slow in comparison to prescription medication. This is the problem, every chronic pain patient including myself is deathly afraid of the pain escalating into debilitating pain. Simply put a patient on long-term opioid treatment has been conditioned to take a prescribed amount and this kills his pain and this gives the patient confidence in their surroundings. However when the brain does not get the drug it wants at the time it wants it, the body revolts with increased pain, disability, cramping, nerve pain and muscle spasms. This is because the painkillers (e.g. Vicodin, OxyContin, Norco, Hydrocodone) commonly prescribed by physicians to treat pain -

cause a change in your brain chemistry that is not under your control. (Burke, 2013, p. 3) So as time goes on, the patient has no concept of what part of the pain is residual from the injury or the brain calling out for more drugs. My philosophy was to use MMJ, or a cannabis product first before taking a pain pill, slowly weaning off the opioids replacing them with cannabis products. I am not a smoker, and can’t smell like marijuana in my work environment. After investigating several products, I settled on edibles, it was discreet, nobody knew what I was taking and it didn’t smell. In this transition from the controlled result of pain pills to cannabis, a natural product, I discovered I had to be confident in the effects of cannabis. This is difficult because not all products are made equal. First, I had to embrace that it worked, and I had to be patient with the effects and its ability to work. Through significant trial and error, I found a product that killed the pain, reduced the cravings and “energized” me so I could work and live normally. What worked best for me was “The HealthCare Bar”, a 200mg THC nut bar. It had just enough THC that it blocked the pain signals and the craving of the opioid. The CBD’s had an immediate effect reducing my sedentary and active pain. This bar is what I settled on for daytime use, for work, and everyday activities. Again, the philosophy behind dosing with cannabis with a consistent dosage at set intervals with cannabis products to relieve the effects cravings and discomfort associated with chronic pain. This product is great for giving me relief during the day and through everything I do. I take approximately 20mg in the morning 10 mg in the afternoon till about 4 pm. It is great for everyday use. The second factor to consider is the breakthrough pain, where as sharp pain, comes as a result of increased activity. Doctors love to say, “Curtail your activities. Learn to live within your pain.” I believe that is complete crap. If you’re feeling better, you live life, you do what you want to do, if not, you are not living. What is the point of living stuck on the couch, depressed from your pain, which means to live, one must increase activities, the breakthrough pain is a necessary evil. Seated on a horse for several hours results in significant back pain. Well, I do have significant back pain, I’ve broken my back, and had numerous operations to correct the damage, but I like to ride horses. Instead of using the pain pills shortly before an activity, killing the pain, I now have to be more cognizant of what my activities will be and medicate accordingly. The first and not in any particular order is Jumbo Superfood products in the form of THC/CBD Potion. This is a spray for the mouth that when used kills pain and muscle spasms quickly through product absorption in the mouth. What is great is it tastes and smells like Peppermint. If I have to stand for more than about 15 minutes I get severe bilateral foot pain due to the fractures and nerve damage associated with frostbite. However, life and work do not allow the luxury of sitting after 15 minutes, in my work I have to stand on a stage for a TV show, and other activities that require standing for long periods of time. This is why I favor Jumbo Superfoods THC Potion as its small discrete and does not smell

In conclusion, substituting cannabis products to treat pain is the course of therapy for surviving and thriving in your life. We all know the disadvantages and side effects of prescription medication. I have found what works for me. I have confidence that the products I use will not leave me stranded in pain. I utilized blood tests, DNA tests to evaluate which vitamins worked best for my metabolism, and I used Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to make up for the loss in hormones consistent with my years of physical abuse and the natural consequence in aging. I’m 60 years old, broken everything, and still ride horses, back country camp, fish and more. I’ve had more than 30 surgeries, with plates, screws and other hardware bonded to my skeleton that keep me vertical. I use a cannabis product about every 4 hours to get through my grueling workday. Yes, finding the natural alternative is a difficult one, however, it’s a rewarding one. I have spent the last 30 years treating patients; I wish I had this in my bag of tricks years ago. Not only do I use it personally, I counsel Rheumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Pain, PTSD, Pro Athletes and all patients on the use of cannabis to increase their quality of life. References

For sleep, this has been the biggest problem for me as sleep is difficult because everything hurts. I can get to sleep, but staying asleep is tremendous work because my body hurts and spasms waking me up. I again found W-Vapes Indicia Brand to work best getting me to sleep and keeping me asleep. I woke up without a hangover and in most cases I woke up pain-free. This gave me enough time to begin the daytime regime with the bars and other products I mentioned. The advantage prescription drugs have been that it’s easy, very little work with exceptional accuracy, and it’s predictable. However, with times changing and the physicians inability to prescribe these drugs now,

people are moving to another easy remedy and that’s Heroin. We’re seeing reports of high school and college-age student athletes that are addicted, as they can no longer get the drugs and subsequently move to Heroin with several reports of deaths due to overdose. One must ask why are people moving to of all drugs Heroin from opioids, not cannabis? Driven people have to function they thrive by being busy and productive. They want the quick fix to the problem, and hide it so nobody knows their secret. Kill the pain in 10 minutes and go back to work is the philosophy, not much different than the football player we used to shoot-up with painkillers so he could go back on the field, same mentality. The good news is cannabis is great in this situation, very little or no harm from ingesting the products. If one does over ingest, it will wear off without significant side effects, and most importantly cannabis will not interfere with anything in the body, it allows the body to heal. The bad news is it’s slow, the body has to accommodate and substitute the more potent synthetic drug for the safer, more natural alternative. This while the brain is screaming in pain, making it physically difficult to even move, motivating the patient to kill the pain as fast as possible. Cannabis is not a quick and easy fix in these situations, it takes longer, but it’s safer increasing a patients longevity and pain-free existence.

“green.” As I said, I use it for breakthrough pain, and it works great, extending my ability to stand or move and I use it for horseback riding, and all the other activities I participate in. If I am by myself and out of the way of patients or others I utilize the W-Vapes Sativa for breakthrough pain and relaxation as well. W-Vapes has done an amazing job of making a quality product that does not leave an aftertaste that works quickly. Remember, one of my biggest fears is having pain that escalates and I can’t elevate it. This is what was great about W-Vapes, great product and it works well for my chronic pain rheumatoid arthritis patients as well. A third product that I thoroughly enjoy, that again has the highest quality rating I’ve found, is Something Chocolate by Mitch Koulouris. These chocolate truffles taste as good or better than anything I have tasted anywhere in the world. I used to travel with Olympic teams and they just love to feed us every delicacy known to man. Something Chocolate is up there with them all. What I appreciated, is the quality of the product. I found when testing Something Chocolate truffles for my patients, the purity of the product made the absorption of the 20mg of THC/CBD mix enhanced. I only need to cut his product in half to get the pain relief I needed without any memory loss or feeling of high. Speaking personally, and from experience, using cannabis does not get me “high.” It relieves the pain, giving me a feeling of being unshackled from my body. I’m not high; I don’t sit and contemplate my navel. I need my body to keep up with my mind; I cannot be burdened by pain, and muscle spasms, this is what takes me off my game. I require the cannabis to fill the void of pain killers so I can function with the fractures, and biomechanical problems I have from the years of abuse, which was a tremendous amount of fun at the time. One other remedy I have found for quick pain relief and muscle soreness is Xternal Balm. It’s a great topical cream that does not smell like weed and gives instant relief. We compared a similar product from prescription medicines and they don’t work as well as this product and Xternal Balm was at a fraction of the cost.

TOPICAL FEATURE:

B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Topicals are one of the best ways to introduce a “newbie” to cannabis. It relieves pain but it doesn’t get you high and it won’t show up in your bloodstream if tested. A great product line we recommend checking out is Ah Warner’s Cannabis Basics based in Seattle, Washington. “The Remedy Pain Stick” is packaged in a convenient and easy-to-administer push stick. It is CBD, THC and terpene rich, while also infused with healing ingredients like arnica montana, aloe, shea butter, and Vitamin E. You simply apply locally to the where you are feeling pain and it helps your body heal naturally. Literally within minutes of using The Remedy Pain Stick my back and neck pain went away. This product is great for arthritis, psoriasis, headaches, multiple sclerosis, burns, cuts, scrapes, bruises and any other kind of physical pain or dermatological condition. The Ink 20/20 Tattoo Stick is designed for fresh ink. If you’re a tattoo enthusiast like I am, you know that the most important care you take with your tattoos is in the first two weeks. If you don’t use the right moisturizers your tattoo colors will fade quickly and it will potentially become infected. Typically A&D lotion or Aquaphor are the two recommend immediate treatments for tattoos, for the first three days. With cannabis being a natural antibacterial and antiviral agent, it seems a wonder why someone hadn’t thought of tattoo salve before. We used Ink 20/20 on a fresh tattoo, and immediately noticed the difference in color, brightness and moisture when compared to using regular A&D or another antibiotic lotion. When used for the duration of the tattoo healing period (7-10 days), we noticed that the blacks stayed black and didn’t fade at all. Additionally, as a topical analgesic, anytime the tattoo was itchy or peeling the itch went away when Ink 20/20 was applied. The only thing I wish is that I had this Ink 20/20 Stick when I got all of my tattoos years ago! Cannabis Basics has a commitment to quality and freshness, only producing in small batches. They buy locally and organically whenever possible, use only natural preservatives and they never test their topicals on animals. In addition to their premium cannabis flower cannabinoid line of topicals, Cannabis Basics also offers an organic hempseed oil line of beauty products.
