LETTER FROM THETEXT EDITOR HERE TEXT HERE Greetings my friends, It’s April now, which means within our industry the holidaze really are upon us. The cannabis community tends to infuse every holiday with our favorite festive plant and it’s easy to remember the clever ways we work marijuana into Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Finding a meaningful way to get the ganja into Guy Fawkes Day or Martin Luther King Day is sure doable but slightly more challenging. While it’s true that some of us honestly try and make every single day a “High” holiday, the highest day of the year is April 20th, AKA: 420. If you’ve worked in the cannabiz on 4/20 before you know it’s crazy busy and insanely fun. However you decide to celebrate, be sure you’re careful, caring and well prepared. If you’re looking for ideas on what to do, our events guide has some great suggestions including The Edibles Infused 420 Casino Night at Casa Vertigo. It’s our very first post Prop 64 and Measure M 4/20 in Los Angeles so let’s make it better than ever!

Edibles Magazine Issue 32

In this issue we explore the origins of the 420 mythos with an article from our own LC Squared and artwork by our cartoonist Breon Bliss, and also highlight the story of one of our favorite companies and allies in the medication mission: the always wonderful W Vapes.

What she wrote is illuminating, insightful and fascinating so be sure to read it. I love getting educated by the people I work with. We’ve also got lots of great new recipes, reviews, news and more. As always we appreciate you reading. Remember to smile at your budtender, tip your delivery driver and know your dose. Please have the greatest Four Twenty ever and share it with people you care about. Also - make sure you watch “Logan” and see “Legion”. They’re new and two of the best live action adaptations of Marvel Comics ever put on the big and small screen. Thanks. ~Truth is not obliged to stick to possibilities.

4/20 isn’t the only high holiday this month, it’s also Passover from the 11th to the 17th and to help you prepare for it we had writer, actress and Hebrew teacher Rakefet Abergel visit Shifra & Alex Klein at the Mitzva Herbal Company to learn everything she could about Keeping Cannabis Kosher and to do a tasting of some of their holy deliciousness. Q&A:TOPICALS

TALKING TOPICALS with Gar Gar Souders, cannatopics.com

Dear Gar, I have Degenerative Disc disease and recently obtained a medical recommendation. I don't smoke and intend to try edibles soon but I was told by a friend that I should also try topicals. I checked at the local dispensary and there were several choices. How do I know which one to get and how to best use it? My friend said I should e-mail you for answers, hope you can help. Thanks, Jeanne C., Santa Rosa, CA Hi Jeanne, Studies have shown that Degenerative Disc disease responds very well to a strong infused cream applied where needed for pain during the day with a high THC oil applied before bed, in place of cream. In many cases a cream will give much faster relief due to penetrating agents it contains. Oils penetrate the skin more slowly while you sleep for deeper healing, and can make mornings better. If the pain level is high, be sure both the cream & oil are the strongest that you can obtain. If your dispensary doesn't carry what you need, ask them for a stronger product. Topical pain relief is 100% fact. Hello Gar, I am a senior and use various infused edibles on a regular basis with great success. While I was picking up my weekly medicine, the young man at the dispensary told me I should add topicals to my purchases. He said it would be good for my pains here & there, and it would be good for my body. What do you think? Lucy S., Denver, CO Hi Lucy, The young man at the dispensary was probably your budtender, and was very knowledgeable. The edible that you are currently using supplies your body's CB-1 system with cannabinoids, but only topicals affect the body's CB-2 system. By using both edibles and topicals, you are nourishing the body's entire cannabinoid system. Try massaging an infused cream on bruised, painful or inflamed areas for added relief. Dear Gar, I played football for years and then became a floor man. Needless to say, I get a lot of knee pain. Do you know of any topical product that I can get to help? It has to be something I can use at work. Paul G., Sacramento, CA Hi Paul, Try a strong topical in a stick form. The stick can be carried in your pocket, ready for use as needed. The beeswax often used in topical sticks will cause the medicine to better stay where you apply it. Gar Souders has over a decade of research into the effects & formulations of cannabis infused topicals. He is the Founder of CannaTopics and is a member of several Pro Cannabis organizations. W Vapes has been healing patients and winning trophies since they launched in 2015 and two of the biggest reasons why are Jeff Nagel and Amber Lee Abbott - the cannabis power couple whose big hearts and vast knowledge have made the company what it is today. 20

The W Vapes Story: Passion and Compassion in Cannabis Concentrate W Vapes launched as a company in the summer of 2015 and their supercritical Co2 extracted cannabis oil vapes have been winning trophies and developing an extremely loyal fanbase of patients and customers ever since. The winning streak they’ve been on started when they were less than a month old and took home the Dab Cup in San Jose at Hempcon and they’re still going strong. Less than 2 months ago they had multiple wins presented to them onstage by wrestling superstar Rob Van Dam at The Best of Edibles List Awards in Los Angeles. So why do they keep winning so many awards and what makes them so extra special? Well - let me tell you all about it. The story of W Vapes really begins in 2013 with a somewhat smaller vaporizer pen company called R.E.L.M: RefiningExtraction-Laboratory-Manufacturing, and the two incredibly special people who created it. Once upon a time; Jeff Nagel was a popular DJ performing and producing events throughout Europe and

North America, and Amber Lee Abbott was an Elite Model, singer, songwriter and photographer travelling the globe. Serendipity brought them together in 2007, the same year the Pre-Interim Control Ordinance was enacted in LA, when a mutual friend recruited them both to California to run The Northridge Healing Center. Both were Southerners from the Carolinas, Jeff is from North Carolina and Amber from South, and upon arrival in LA they found themselves sharing a one bedroom apartment as they adjusted to the new landscape of Los Angeles. In less than a couple of months they realized they had fallen in love and they’ve been crazy about eachother ever since. After they became a couple, it wasn’t long before

they had adopted a dachshund named Wheezie who is now nine and a half years old. After they left The Northridge Healing Center they went on to run the 105/405 Collective in North Hills and from there moved on to become the co-owners of Grateful Meds from 2009 to 2010 - a very popular dispensary that used to be at Melrose and La Brea where Wheezie worked with them everyday and where Jeff was the operating manager. After selling their shop they were able to invest in and focus on growing flower while they refined their skills and built their knowledge of everything you need to be a master of growing high quality cannabis on a diverse scale. It was only after they had mastered both the art and the science of growing that they decided to do that same thing when it came

to making oil, and so that was where they began channeling their energies and attention and it was only then that they created R.E.L.M. and the seeds that would eventually bloom into what we now know as W Vapes had been planted. R.E.L.M. quickly developed a reputation in the industry that was good enough to attract the people who were managing Tommy Chong. Tommy, Jeff and Amber met over a dinner of raw vegetarian food and all three felt that they had enough of a similar vision in their hearts that they could definitely collaborate on a project together. Chong had a nice grow on his rooftop where he was cultivating Kyle Kushman’s Strawberry Cough strain. The flowers were processed into Tommy’s Oil and in 2014 the “Tommy Pen” was created and weighed in at 53% THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and 15% CBD (Cannabidiol) making it about a 3.5 to 1 ratio

Jeff and Amber continued to impress other high profile patients like Snoop Dogg and Mike Tyson, until they managed to attract the attentions of some very wise investors. Once they had finished deciding exactly what the new plan would be they were ready to launch a whole new company implementing the lessons they learned from having R.E.L.M. and choosing what and how they wanted to evolve when it came to their new business. The new company was, and still is W Vapes.

there for a whole year. We’ve heard that it stood for weed, and it eventually came to mean Whatever-Whenever-Wherever which played toward the strength of the subtlety and portability of the product, but still isn’t exactly what you’d call a final thought on the matter. Like other legends of iconic status perhaps it’s better to leave the true answer shrouded in a bit of mystery. What’s important is that they didn’t waste any time moving full steam ahead making the new brand everything they’d ever imagined a cannabis oil vape pen could possibly be. Making great oil starts with sourcing or growing great flower and Amber and Jeff had become masters of both crafts. Once they had plenty of top shelf, pesticide free, organic plants to work with, they were able to set about refining and perfecting their extraction process. of what each individual is expecting from specific Indica, Sativa and Hybrid strains. Selecting the safest, and most effectively proper hardware was also very important to Nagel, Abbott and company . Medical grade stainless steel and glass cartridges were chosen utilizing a central pole inside rather than a cotton wick. This was uncommon in the beginning of 2015 and some of the cartridges you were seeing on the market were probably still using relatively porous plastic and a fair amount of propylene glycol in an attempt to produce large plumes and clouds when being vaped. It was important to W Vapes to be among the first to do a lot of scientific research in order to develop the highest quality product possible from “farm-to-table. They hired their own PhD Chemist to help in the lab and continually ensure the quality of the product by doing as much in-house testing as possible, in addition to multiple third party outside testing laboratories. Supercritical Co2 was essential to extract the oil from the flower, and it also allowed them to first isolate and separate the valuable yet volatile terpenes before losing them to the temperature and pressure of the process. After removing and protecting the terpenes Jeff was able to re-introduce them into his oil during post processing and preserve the taste, smell and flavor of the specific strains he was using to make the W Vapes oil. Terpene separation and preservation was important to W Vapes, because it naturally allowed them to produce vape oil that tastes and smells strain specific, and also aids in giving the patients the full spectrum experience of medicating with their favorite strains of cannabis, as well as the full effects, however subtle,

The stuff that really makes a business like this be not only successful but also special, is the people who work there providing the heart and soul of the daily operations. It was

The oil being made these days is processed until it’s platinum gold, pure and clear. They also now do W Dabs which are full grams of award winning pure Co2 concentrate perfect for dabbing, full flower strain specific CBD cartridges and 420mg All-In-One disposable vape pens that feature a double viewing window of the oil chamber. There is also a new Golden Gram Special Pen, as featured on the cover being enjoyed by Amber Lee Abbott and a line of specially infused pre-rolled joints on the way. The W Vapes website has a store locator and it’s updated daily so you always know where to find them, a list of all available strains with lab results and you can also read exactly what awards they’ve won. Some strains have over 80% THC and the full cannabinoid content is always printed on the packaging so you genuinely know what the strength of your medicine is going to be and how to dose effectively. It will certainly be exciting to see what happens next for these creative, passionate, and compassionate people. “W Vapes is the freedom to feel better, whenever and wherever you want.” The world sure appreciates that. Canada to Legalize Cannabis for Adult-Use by July 2018, Canada Day B. Le Grand In December of last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, said he was not legalizing marijuana to please those who smoke it, rather he wanted the law not to be broken because of it or that criminal organizations should not profit from it. Canada’s government is expected to propose legislation this month that will, if adopted, lead to the full adult-use legalization of cannabis by July 1, 2018. It will broadly follow the recommendation of a federally appointed task force that was chaired by former liberal Justice Minister Anne McLellan. The provincial governments will decide how the marijuana is distributed, sold and will set the price.

Bill Blair, the former Toronto police chief who has been leading the cannabis legalization project for Trudeau’s government, briefed the Liberal caucus on the roll-out plan and the legislation during caucus meetings this weekend. In a summit in Toronto last year, Trudeau said that he had two guiding principles in his initiative to legalize pot that focused on reducing harm as opposed to maximizing benefits — to cut down on underage access to marijuana and to reduce criminal activities that have surrounded the illegal marijuana trade. "I have no doubt that Canadians and entrepreneurs will be tremendously innovative in finding ways to create positive economic benefits from the legalization and control of marijuana, but our focus is on protecting kids and protecting our streets," Trudeau said, according to the Time. “People are right now breaking the law,” Trudeau told the Toronto Star. “We haven’t changed the laws. We haven’t legalized it yet. Yes, we got a clear mandate to do that. We’ve said we will. We’ve said we’re going to do it to protect our kids and to keep the money out of the pockets of criminals." The spread of storefront dispensaries in Toronto has clearly made the prime minister worried. “It’s a situation that is frustrating and I can understand people’s frustration on this,” Trudeau said, according to the Star. Included in the recommendations, is a separation of powers between the federal, provincial and municipal governments, which all will have a stake in the cannabis economy and the tax revenue it is expected to generate. According to those briefed on the plan, the federal government will control the licensing of cannabis growers. Medical cannabis producers are currently licensed by Health Canada, and they distribute medicine to patients through the mail. Adult-use distribution systems–whether by mail, delivery, or in retail stores– will be established by the provinces, which will also possibly control a provincial cannabis tax. Federal authorities will set a minimum purchasing and possession age of 18, but each province will have the ability to set a higher age limit if it so chooses. It is uncertain whether or not existing medical cannabis dispensaries, which are not currently licensed, will be grandfathered into the new system or allowed to apply for federal and provincial licenses. Canadians will also be free to grow up to four marijuana plants per household. Issue No. 34 I Page 28

INFUSED YOGA TEXT HERE

Ganja Yoga: Higher Self Yoga B. Le Grand

As 2018 approaches, we are seeing more and more cannabis events pop up, from infused dinner parties, to patient-consumer events, to business-to-business events. My favorite new cannabis extra-curricular activity is ganja yoga, because it’s not just recreational, it’s also medicinal and great for your health! Cannabis can be used to alter one’s state of consciousness, aid in self-discovery and lead to deeper observations about the nature of reality. It has been used as a spiritual tool across a wide array of religious traditions for thousands of years.

Classes are open to novices, with no pre-requisites at all. Cannabis newbies are welcome to come and try cannabis oil vape pens, and connoisseurs are welcome to bring their own. Out of respect

to the studio, smoking is not allowed inside. The key elements involved are all inclusive of a healthy healing yoga lifestyle. Even when you aren’t in yoga class, you can absolutely be practicing yoga. Be one with yourself, be one with the universe, and operate karmically. Even if you might be averse to yoga, meditation decreases stress and increases focus. Using cannabis can help open-up the heart and mind to the energies of the universe. Integrating chakras with your meditation practices can help you dig deep into your core essence. Emily says, “One of the eight limbs of yoga is self reflection, self-study. What’s important is that you take the time to study the patterns in your thoughts feeling and behaviors, understanding why they are, looking for ways to change the patterns, to live healthier lives and have better outcomes when dealing with people. Our dealings with people are so complex. Yoga can improve those interactions by optimizing those patterns. When you combine that with cannabis, it makes it even more powerful. This is something that only when used consciously, with focus and intention, will it help you obtain new opportunities, when otherwise that opportunity likely to slip through your fingers. This is a program where we have thought through the elements to be sure we are being true to yoga philosophy and helping and putting forth a path for people to get there.” “Each class is about each of one of the 8 limbs of yoga, if you take each and every one of the classes, you will understand the chakras and limbs of yoga. Psychological infrastructure is the foundation you build upon. It’s just as important to exercise your brain, as your body, in every single class. And [our yogis] can incorporate that into their lives. We do not only want to focus on esoteric, for the sake of knowledge, we give actionable information to make people's lives better immediately.” Learn more online at and check class schedules: www. higher-selfyoga.com

Ganja yoga is an experience that allows you to get in tune with yourself while experiencing the benefits of cannabis. If you medicate daily, why not medicate at yoga? But it’s more than just getting high and stretching. Emily Meyers, Co-Founder and creator of Higher Self Yoga, based in West Los Angeles, says, “I am passionate about cannabis as a spiritual tool. I believe cannabis can help us get in touch with your thoughts and feelings in a way that would be difficult to access otherwise, or under normal circumstances.”

PRODUCT REVIEWS Mackenzie’s Medicinals. Suppositories Tanganyika

Picture this... I was in some of the worst, excruciating pain ever. I'm literally hunched over a trash can throwing up for five hours straight, just nauseous and dry heaving because I literally had nothing else to give. This was last Tuesday and it was the first day of my horrible bloody mistress. I couldn't keep any edible down and smoking only made the nausea worse. My skin was clammy and I had hot flashes like I was going through third stage menopause. I call my editor

and tell her I'm barely surviving and she comes through with these cannabis suppositories. I gave zero cares and stuck it right up there as soon as I got it. You can use a glove but I just washed my hands and went straight for it. I laid down so that all that goodness of whatever was suppose to happen actually stayed in place to happen...and something did. I stopped having nausea after like 20 minutes and I was able lay in a comfortable position in the bed and finally pass out like my body needed to do the entire time. When I woke up I thought about all of the cancer patients that desperately need this but don't have amazing people in their lives with access or the willingness to do it. These suppositories really saved me in so many ways that day and it only reaffirmed my belief in this incredible plant.

Happy Seed Edibles. Cannabis Infused Honey

Edibles Magazine Issue 34

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to cannabis-infused edibles and potables, I sometimes regret that bitter aftertaste that comes with combining marijuana to butter; I get completely bummed out when I spend money on a product where the aftertaste is so strong, I feel nauseated before the edible has time to take effect. If you’ve ever felt the need to “wash it down” with the beverage of your choice with every bite, then you feel my pain. Then Happy Seed Edibles and their cannabis infused honey entered my life. Super smooth and buttery without any hint of canna-aftertaste, this honey will turn you into Winnie The Pooh because the taste is so good, you’ll want to forgo

the spoon and just eat it with your hands. You can use this honey in and on everything – tea, coffee, desserts, cocktails, meats, fruit, breakfast (a 50/50 blend with maple syrup for porous foods like pancakes or French toast), whatever you desire – Happy Seed will definitely change the way you look at edibles. Available in indica or sativa blends, this 2oz jar packs quite the punch (125mg of THC per oz) so I definitely recommend starting off with a teaspoon, then waiting at least 60 minutes before consuming any more. I know the jar is about the size of a room service jar of jelly, but don’t let the size fool you – there’s a lot going on in that jar. My particular jar was a sativa blend, so I spent the day feeling peaceful and pain-free the whole day through without feeling like I needed to sleep. It also seems to be a bit of an appetite enhancer, so act accordingly! This is a product I’d happily keep in stock at my home anytime.

Strictly Edibles. Dark Chocolate Raspberry Doughnuts Darcy Thompson

Strictly Edibles dark chocolate raspberry doughnuts come in a pack of three with 600mg of hash coconut oil. The Indica hybrid treats h ave top-n o tch packaging, with clear dosage information right on the front. Solvent free and the size of standard small doughnuts, they can be sealed for freshness if you can’t consume them all at once. One has to appreciate how professional their packaging is with a bar code and even their phone number if you need to contact them directly, sometimes this can be hard in the cannabis community. Although they aren’t organic and a mix of natural and artificial flavoring, they are far from having that terrible fake taste of some candies and baked goods. They taste like they are made from high-grade raw materials. When you open the bag they instantly smell

good and are invitingly consistent looking. I’m happy there are three to a bag and they aren’t giant. Pink on the inside and smooth dark chocolate on the outside, they remain moist even after opening and re-opening over a few days. You can taste the cannabis flavor, but it isn’t overpowering. The chocolate was smooth and not too sweet as well as the dough. There was no grittiness or terrible aftertaste. The high came on within the first twenty minutes and I could feel the mellow Indica vibe for the rest of the night as I continued to up the amount consumed every hour. My need to smoke or dab decreased for the night as well as into the next day. I would almost call it a gentle creeper high and there was no problem with an edible hang over, however I consumed less than a quarter of one. Anyone who loves doughnuts will appreciate the array of flavors and quality of these products. I’ll keep testing the dosage to see what my limit is, so far up to a quarter of one at a time. These cheerful treats made my weekend a lot happier.

Outer Galactic Chocolate. Truffles Richard Bell

I

tried these without reading or knowing any information about them. I assumed that they were some kind of chocolate, and to my delight they were absolutely delicious. These truffles are a fantastic way to get

medicated. I was shocked when I read that they were sugar-free. If it's not sugar, there is something hiding in there somewhere. Maybe some kind of cosmic sweetener. Each truffle is 25mg, and they come in a box of 4, for a total of 100mg per box. The coloring of the truffles are so beautiful and elegant, as if they were sprayed with with food grade metallic shine. These truffles have an excellent little kick to them. The richness of the dark chocolate completely masks any taste that would reveal you are actually taking medicine. If you are into dark chocolate, and have some experience with edibles, you must give this a try. I will definitely seek these out the next time I go shopping for more infused products. Israel Decriminalizes The Use of Cannabis L.C. Squared

On Sunday, cannabis legalization took a big leap forward as the Israeli Cabinet approved a proposal to decriminalize cannabis use which was formulated by the Public Security and Justice ministries. While smoking cannabis in public is still illegal, first-time offenders will only face a fine of at least $250 rather than criminal charges. A second strike will double the fine to $500 while a third will have the offender undergo rehabilitation and education as well as a suspension of their driver’s license. The fourth will be the final straw as the offender will face charges and possible incarceration. Money collected from the fines will fund anti-drug education and rehabilitation. If minors are caught using cannabis, they would only face a criminal investigation if they refuse to partake in the treatment program. The reform was headed by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan who said that the arrest policy was reexamined due to global legalization efforts. He deemed the cabinet approval as, “an important step on the way to implementing the new policy that will put emphasis on explaining and treating rather than on criminal enforcement," which reinforces his declarations in January that criminal prosecution should only be a last resort. The chairwoman of the Committee of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Tamar Zandberg, applauded this measure by saying, “this is an important step, but not the end of the road. It sends a message that the millions of Israelis who consume marijuana aren’t criminals. We will carry on following the details in the committee and ensure that the change is implemented.” Israel’s cannabis industry has been backed by the Ministry of Health whose ultra-Orthodox leader has encouraged its research and innovation. While there may have been only a few dozen users of medical marijuana a decade ago, today there are approximately 25,000 users. Saul Kaye, the CEO of iCan, an Israeli cannabis entrepreneurship enabler predicts bright times ahead due to this measure. “Decriminalizing cannabis in Israel is another step towards creating a Canna-Tech global industry, with Israel at the forefront, he said, “This step, although not legitimizing use, is due to reduce the negative perception of the plant as 'immoral or 'criminal', increasing openness to its outstanding medicinal and wellness properties.” Issue No. 34 I Page 42

Heavenly Sweet Medibles. Kooky Kookie Cereal Jack Paradise

Heavenly Sweet Kooky Kookies Cereal is really even better than what it looks like: It’s a superior tasting version of Cookie Crisp cereal infused with deliciously potent cannabis. To quote a good friend: “This ain't rocket surgery”. Heavenly Sweet took the greatest cereal ever and added weed; meaning they lovingly and carefully infused my favorite breakfast with top shelf goodness. I had it with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and the experience was absolutely fantastic. I even enjoyed it watching cartoons Adventure Time to be specific and it was even more enjoyable than usual as my mind expanded and my body relaxed I found myself full of giggles and smiling big. The whole bag weighs 8 ounces and contains a total of 300mg of THC. You’ve got about 4 servings there at 75mg each, which is perfect for those of us with a well tempered tolerance. If you’re

not a heavy medicator you’ll just want to enjoy this sweet sensation in smaller servings. There are actually 30 standard size doses of medicine in the bag and it’s also easy and fun to just snack on in small handfuls. Moonman's Mistress. Cosmic Cacao Cookies

Edibles are a fickle beast. You eat some innocuous looking morsel, forget all about it, and two hours later you find yourself standing in the kitchen with a garlic press in your hand and a vague sense of purpose. Except that you have no garlic in your kitchen. And you're not cooking anything. But those holes, those holes - like a honeycomb. Could bees make a life for themselves inside my garlic press? Like a bee studio with a collapsible sofa? Anyway, these Moonman's Mistress Cosmic Cacao cookies certainly did the trick. Bonus points for their low-glycemic ingredients -- as a Paleo, bio-hackery kind of guy, they had me at 'arrowroot flour'. I want THC in my body; not sugar. I'm very particular about these things. These cookies had the Paleo trifecta

of dark chocolate, (weed infused) coconut oil and peppermint. It reminded me of a spherical Thin Mint, without the thinness. A Girthy Mint, if you will. In terms of potency, these contain 10mg per serving. The box contained three cookies, but was listed as having only 2.5 servings (ARE YOU MAKING ME DO MATH, WEED COOKIES?) So I did some quadratic formula and Riemann sums and came up with a per cookie potency of about 8mg. I ate two. For posterity, I took the following notes once the Cosmic Cacao had taken effect: "The tangy and slightly strangled delight of a sour pickle.. Trailing off into watching Knicks nostalgia supercuts on YouTube' I think the takeaway here is that these cookies activate the senses, and allow you to approach your old passions with a renewed vigor, even if those passions include standing alone in your kitchen and hypnotizing yourself with tools from the utility drawer.

Sow Eden. Ginger Snaps, Capsules, CO2 Oil, Tinctures Jack Paradise

We tasted, tested and reviewed a few of the outstanding products from Sow Eden and couldn’t be happier with the results.

First up: Premium CBD Infused Ginger Snaps. The Sow Eden CBD Ginger Snaps are amazingly good and seriously some of the best ginger snaps any of us had ever had. The ingredients are organic and sweetened with Blackstrap Molasses. Each cookie is 10mg of full flower CBD and each 2 ounce bag contains six cookies. That’s 60mg total with only 3mg of THC per entire bag making the cannabinoid ratio 20:1. Perfect for pain relief and very delicious. Second we’ve got: Sow Eden Gel Capsules. Sow Eden’s gel caps are available in CBD or in a THC/CBD 1:1 ratio and made using a proprietary process that boosts the bio-availability of CBD. There are Ten 10mg gelatin capsules per bottle making it a 100mg total of Full Spectrum CBD plus the terpenes and each 1:1 THC/CBD gel capsule contains 10mg Cannabidiol and 10mg Tetrahydrocannabinol along with a few other minor cannabinoids like CBG, CBC and CBDV. The carrier oil used to make the capsules is organic virgin coconut oil. When the capsules are kept below 76 degrees, the coconut oil solidifies. At temperatures

warmer than 76 degrees, the coconut oil begins to melt and liquefy. Both products are great for pain management and relief from stress, but we did find the 1:1 caps to be more effective for serious aches and pains.

Next is the: Full Spectrum CBD Oil 1 Gram Syringe. 100% natural, fungus and pesticide free. Each sterile syringe contains over 750mg of full spectrum CBD. This super-critical CO2 extracted High Potency CBD Syringe makes it easy to dispense and dose medicinal oil. No fillers like glycerin or propylene glycol are ever used and no re-introduced terpenes are added. The oil in these syringes is high in terpenes and vitamins, smells and tastes like honey and pine sap, and is sugar and gluten free. These are available in 1 gram size syringes and are always lab tested to ensure quality and potency. This concentrated CBD oil can be taken orally as a sublingual held under the tongue, added to your favorite food or hot beverage or you can vaporize it. It’s even safe for pets.

Lastly comes: The Sow Eden CBD Elixir. Each half ounce bottle of pain relieving CBD Elixir contains about 15 total servings and 150mg of Full Spectrum CBD with 7mg of THC and includes a glass eye dropper that makes this tincture incredibly easy to dose and dispense. The elixir contains 100% organic fractionated coconut oil flavored with 5 different therapeuticgradecertifiedorganicessentialoilsincluding: original/unflavored, orange, lemon, peppermint and cinnamon-turmeric. It is also a pet friendly product. Check them out at: sowedenorganics.com.

Cali Gold. CBD Bar AC/DC 22:1 & Hemp CBD Dark Chocolate Crix Lee

Combining chocolate with CBD is not a new revelation in the current cannabis market, but when it’s done right, you’ll want to keep it in your pain management arsenal. Enter Cali Gold.

I thought I knew everything about THC and CBD edibles, then I read the little “pro-tip” left on the inside of the 50mg wrapper: “Many people use CBD as an antidote to THC overdose. If you eat too much of a THC edible, try CBD to take the edge off.” I learned something new while tasting delicious, pain relieving treats. That’s pretty snazzy.

Edibles Magazine Issue 34

Available in a variety of different strengths, I tested and tasted the 50mg (10mgper piece) and the 125mg (25mg with a 22:1 ratio), and made with 70% Cacao, these classy little fivepiece dark chocolate bars are a chocolate snob’s dream and gets the job done within 30 minutes. Because of my rheumatoid arthritis, I started with two pieces of the 50mg and was feeling decent enough to take the dog on a quick walk in the neighborhood within 40 minutes. When it came to the 125mg, suggested dosage is ½ of a square at a time but as it’s non-psychoactive, I

went with one square and was good to go within 30 minutes; it was nice to be able to do chores and sit outside with the dogs without wincing in pain every 10 minutes. Plus the strain used for this bar was “AC/DC” which happens to be one of my favorite bands. Although it’s recommended to consume a bit of THC alongside of it, that’s not always a feasible choice (especially if you’re at work), so I’d recommend drinking a cup of coffee or something caffeinated, as the caffeine will get the blood flowing and put the CBD to work more effectively.

Measure M Passes in Los Angeles

Edibles Magazine Issue 34

On Tuesday March 7th, Measure M, the City Council backed ballot measure aiming to regulate cannabis businesses in Los Angeles passed by an overwhelming majority when over 80% of voters approved the measure. The LA City Council will be granted the authority to create and amend regulations concerning marijuana commercialization when it comes to the taxation of cannabis sales. In November, Californians voted for the approval of Prop 64, which was the legalization of marijuana in the state, but didn't offer any kind of understandable explanation when it came to who could cultivate, extract, infuse, or distribute cannabis, and cannabis related products.

46

Now, a gross receipts tax of 5% will start being imposed on medical marijuana, and recreational cannabis will have a 10% gross receipts tax. Cultivation, manufacturing, transportation, and research will have a 1% gross receipts tax. The LA City Council can now issue permits and be responsible for cannabis transportation regulation as well. Measure M will also provide the industry a set of local laws and rules that will cover a number of different factors such as: what hours can cannabis businesses operate, and where can they be located? The passage of Measure M effectively repeals the 2013 ballot initiative Proposition D, which outlawed medical cannabis dispensaries while at the same time giving “limited legal immunity to approximately 135 existing dispensaries, considered to be Pre-ICO, because they were operating before the Interim Control Ordinance of 2007. The competing ballot measure, Measure N, would have mostly given control over to the 135 Pre-ICO dispensaries. It was voted against by 64% of voters. Most of those who had initially backed Measure N eventually began supporting M instead.

EVENT RECAP

Emerald Exchange Brings The Best to So Cal Keiko Beatie

Why do Angelinos want buds from Northern Cali you ask? In the U.S. many feel that some of the best cultivation is produced in the Northern California area of “The Emerald Triangle”. Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity County’s are names synonymous with the True OG or Ocean Grown terminology. The dedication of these multi generations of farms is inspiring and respected as they are known to grow the best in the U.S.! Michael states, “It's exciting to see all of the positive response to the Emerald Exchange. Our main goal is to help support the small batch sun-grown cultivators of Northern California, and the Southern California market has been incredibly receptive to that message.” Michael should know as he has been successful within the industry with his vape brand Evoxe. His expertise and

the quality of his brand come to light as he has experience in seeking the top flower available for his own products. What was incredibly apparent was the energy of the amazing staff, attendees and vendors. Just think of all the positive vibes from the classic Renaissance Faire, organically inspired Burning Man, meets old school Rainbow Gathering and the iconic heartfelt Grateful Dead traveling family all coming together in Malibu Canyon

and that is the essences of the Emerald Exchange. Everyone was there for all the right reasons, supporting those who needed true medicine. Some of the great brands in the Farmers Market were: Humboldt Brothers, Humboldt’s Finest, Sweetwater Pharms, Humboldt Trinity Collective and Farms who had homemade Rhubarb Pies. From the Sierra Foothills was Verdant Valley with an amazing Terpene Drinking Water. Of course So Cal was represented with Papa and Barkley, Club M, Evoxe Vapes, The Jelly Shamans and the High Dining Club.

Photos by Evan Mann

Katz’s sums it up with “All Californians care about the quality of the medicine that goes into their bodies, and the cannabis and cannabis products available at the Exchange are created with intention and mindfulness. We are already putting details together for the next event which will happen in the summer and are excited to announce those once they are confirmed.” We

certainly look forward to the Summer Emerald Exchange and supporting our Northern California cultivators. The Emerald Exchange plans to hold four events per year for each of the seasons. For more information on the Emerald Exchange visit: www.emeraldexchangeca.com

With the passing of Prop 64 doors are opening for smokers to be open to the development of commerce and this is exactly what Michael Katz, CEO has done with The Emerald Exchange. This past March on a sunny Southern California day tucked into the canyons of Malibu, the Emerald Exchange took place. Presenting an array of THC products to delight most any cannabis aficionado, the event also had music, live artists painting, relaxing meditation rooms, speakers, enthusiastic attendees and one of the best Farmers Markets I have ever had the pleasure to explore.

Supreme Organics

Crix Lee

If cannabis hard candies aren’t really your thing, then I’ve got just the edible for you. Supreme Organics Fruit Chews are not only Willy Wonka-like in their package design, whose bright yellow, blue, and white stripes stand out from the plain, plastic wrapped fare with a sticker on it that we as patients all know and love so well, they also seem to have captured a little of that magic in the ten pieces of happiness that emerge from said package. Coming in at 100mg of THC (10mg per piece) and four different flavors per, Supreme Organics makes sure that you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. And as each chew is about the size of a 50-centpiece, I found this candy to be much more versatile to my needs. If I wanted them to be a little more firm, I’d just chuck them in the fridge for 20 minutes; if I wanted them super soft, I’ll hold in my hands until it was warm and gooey. And the best part is NO aftertaste that usually comes with the “cooking with cannabutter” territory. The melt point on this candy is so awesome, you can even chuck a piece or two into a hot cup of tea, coffee, whatever floats your boat. I really loved the silkiness of a warmed candy rolling around my tongue, and was pleased to see that, unlike most hard candies, the Supreme Organics chew melted within a few stirs of my tea. It's a great edible to keep in your arsenal. As always, if you’re new to the edibles game, it’s always a good rule of thumb to try half of a piece and wait up to 60 minutes for it to take effect before eating more; for me, it took around 30 minutes and gave me a nice, heady feeling for a good four hours. COVER STORY

420: From Time to Code The Story Behind "4:20" L.C. Squared

In 1971, a group of five friends from San Rafael High School had coined the term. This clique called themselves “The Waldos” due to their choice of their common hangout which was a wall outside of school. One day during the Fall,

the Waldos had heard of a secret marijuana patch near the Point Reyes Peninsula Coast Guard station. The patch was grown by a member of the Coast Guard who could no longer tend to the plants. So with a treasure map in hand, the Waldos decided to organize a weed hunt after school. Since all the Waldos were athletes, they agreed to meet at 4:20 after practice. “We would remind each other in the hallways we were supposed to meet up at 4:20. It originally started out 4:20-Louis and we eventually dropped the Louis,” Waldo Steve told the Huffington Post. “We’d meet at 4:20 and get in my old ‘66 Chevy Impala and, of course, we’d smoke instantly and smoke all the way out to Pt. Reyes and smoke the entire time we were out there. We did it week after week,” said Steve. Unfortunately, after weeks of searching, the patch was never found. Despite their failure, the friends found a nifty codeword based on their meetup time that would easily go under the radar of parents and teachers alike. “I could say to one of my friends, I’d go, 420, and it was telepathic. He would know if I was saying, ‘Hey, do you wanna go smoke some?’ EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

Or, ‘Do you have any?’ Or, ‘Are you stoned right now?’ It was kind of telepathic just from the way you said it,” Steve says. “Our teachers didn’t know what we were talking about. Our parents didn’t know what we were talking about.” With the origin identified comes the next big question, how did the Waldos’ codeword manage to spread across the globe to make itself synonymous with cannabis itself? By the late 60s and early 70s, the hippie culture in San Francisco had all but collapsed. Many fled the Haight-Ashbury district, which is the origin of hippie counterculture, to search for more peaceful settings. Among those who left was the psychedelic rock band the Grateful Dead, who to the Marin County hills - just blocks away from San Rafael High School. Soon, the Waldos and the Grateful Dead would cross paths. A father of one of the Waldos took care of real estate for the Dead while Dave’s brother Patrick managed the sidebands and was friends the Dead’s bassist Phil Lesh. In his interview with the Huffington Post alongside Dave and Steve, Patrick says he’s occasionally smoked with Lesh, but he doesn’t recall whether

Edibles Magazine Issue 34

April 20th, or its numerical counterpart 4/20, will forever remain as the official holiday for cannabis. People will light up their joints and bongs at exactly 4:20 to honor this sacred plant that many have worked so hard to make available across the world. However, what is the true meaning behind these three magic numbers? The four most popular myths have it that the numbers are related to the supposed amount of active chemicals, the date of Hitler’s birthday, a fictional police code for marijuana possession, and the name of one of Bob Dylan’s songs. However, many news sources, including the Huffington Post, the LA Times, Vice News, and even the strict and skeptical Snopes.com have put these rumors to rest as they’ve all agreed that the credit for the numbers go to a group of teenagers during the 1970s. The Huffington Post interviewed two of these five friends who went by their aliases Steve and Dave who came forward with the story.

57

or not he used the Waldos’ codeword 420 around him. Though, Steve admits the possibility by saying, “[The Grateful Dead] had this rehearsal hall on Front Street, San Rafael, California, and they used to practice there. So we used to go hang out and listen to them play music and get high while they’re practicing for gigs. But I think it’s possible my brother Patrick might have spread it through Phil Lesh. And me, too, because I was hanging out with Lesh and his band when they were doing a summer tour my brother was managing.”

58

in its 1991 issue. Soon after, High Times began to use the numeric code more liberally as it was used in reference to practically everything cannabis-related. “I started incorporating it into everything we were doing,” said former High Times editor Steven Hager. “I started doing all these big events - the World Hemp Expo Extravaganza and the Cannabis Cup - and we built everything around 420. The publicity that High Times gave it is what made it an international thing. Until then, it was relatively confined to the Grateful Dead subculture. But we blew it out into an international phenomenon.”

The Waldos had open access to the Grateful Dead’s parties and rehearsals and often used the term “420”. “When somebody passes a joint or something, ‘Hey, 420.’ So it started spreading through that community,” said Steve. Soon after, the Dead took the term with them on their world tours during the 70s and 80s and it spread throughout the band’s fandom. It wouldn’t be until 1990 that New York-based monthly cannabis advocation magazine High Times would come to elevate “420”.

The Waldos say that within a few years their own code phrase would spread throughout their hometown of San Rafael and eventually beyond California. Dave and Steve even say that by the early 90’s they started hearing “420” being said in Ohio, Florida and even Canada. They even saw the number graffitied on signs and etched into park benches. In 1997, the Waldos decided to set the story straight and contacted High Times.

Steven Bloom, a reporter for the High Times, said that he was wandering around a parking lot which served as the “market” for Grateful Dead shows said that he was handed a yellow flyer. The message read, “We are going to meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing in Marin County at the Bolinas Ridge sunset spot on Mt. Tamalpais.” Fascinated by the term, Bloom took his find to High Times which then published a copy of that flyer

Hager then flew out to San Rafael to interview the Waldos and others in their hometown and examine the Waldos’ evidence before concluding that the Waldos were telling the truth. “No one’s ever been able to come up with any use of 420 that predates the 1971 usage, which they had established,” said Hager, in his support of the Waldos’ claim, “So unless somebody can come up with something that predates

EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

them, then I don’t think anybody’s going to get credit for it other than them.” “We never made a dime on the thing,” says Dave, half boasting, half lamenting. Despite the lack of royalties, the Waldos are nonetheless proud of their achievement. The Waldos claim that their friends and families boast to others that they personally know the ones who coined 420. Dave even says that High Times even paid for a trip to the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam in 2009. Dave and Steve now work together in a specialty lending company, though they have little time to smoke pot anymore. The other three Waldos have managed to find their careers in marketing for a Napa Valley Winery, printing and graphics, and gutter cleaning. Who would’ve thought that a meetup time between friends would grow to become a code phrase for the green goodness itself? It would even become the namesake for California’s breakthrough 2003 Marijuana Medical Program Act, SB 420. The number has even made waves in pop culture as movies and TV shows such as Pulp Fiction, Lost in Translation, Family Guy and the Simpsons have all of the clocks set to 4:20. As April 20th approaches, let us remember that the significance of cannabis wouldn’t have been made possible without the adventurous pursuits of five young friends. Thank you, Waldos. Now you now the true origins of 4:20.

Q&A: EDIBLES

Q & A with Dr. Mike: What's the Future of Edibles? Dr. Mike Heller, mjwooly.com

Q: What’s the problem with edibles today? A: They take too long: Most edibles take 1-2 hours to kick in. They are improperly dosed: Making an edible with accurate milligram dosing requires established quality control and testing procedures. This can be an expensive and a time consuming process, many small companies cannot afford this, or take shortcuts to save money and time. Q: Are they going to come out with edibles that work faster? A: Yes. “Nano” cannabis is going to make edibles work in 20 to 30 minutes. Q: What is “Nano” cannabis? A: “Nano” cannabis is cannabis oil broken down into extremely small droplets that absorb into your body in a fraction of the time. They also make cannabis more effective, absorbing 2-4 times more into your bloodstream.

Edibles Magazine Issue 34

Q: How can edibles be made more consistent? A: Products can be infused with hash, rick simpson oil, BHO, CO2 oils, rosin, flowers, etc. These all have variations in content depending on the starting material and processing. As cannabis science advances, these oils can be separated into their individual components with high purity. This way edibles can be made with any combination of active ingredients at a high degree of accuracy.

Q: What if I don’t want edibles with processed oil, I want my cannabis to be natural? A: Edibles can still be made using natural extractions like ice water hash and rosin. It is just more work for companies to control their starting material. In the end this will be similar to having a craft beer instead of a Issue No. 34 I Page 62

domestic beer. Q: Are they going to come out with edibles for things like arousal, anxiety, energy, insomnia, etc.? A: It is only a matter of time until edibles take advantage of different cannabinoid and terpene profiles for specific and desired effects. Before then, experts need to identify the right blend of cannabinoids/ terpenes that elicit desired effects. Then they need to make sure this blend does what it is supposed to in your body. Q: What will edible dosing look like in the future? A: There is a strong trend toward microdosing. Several companies are coming out with products that are 2-5mg of cannabinoids per serving instead of the 1000mg brownies of the past. Q: Why microdosing? A: It is safer and easier to control. The effects of cannabis become much more predictable and enjoyable if you know the exact dosage you need. Microdosing allows you to hit this sweet spot within a couple of milligrams. Q: Dr. Mike what is the worst experience you have had with an edible? A: The first time I ate edibles was pretty wild. I ate a tray of homemade brownies because I was a “newb” and thought they didn’t work. What started as an evening watching “Apocalypse Now” turned into a psychedelic trip 2 hours later. At one point I was crouching on the ground terrified of the Vietnam warzone that had to become my reality. Needless to say I slept the entire next day... lesson learned, microdosing. MEDICATING KOSHER

Keeping Cannabis Kosher Celebrating the High Holidays

Rakefet Abergel

Edibles Magazine Issue 34

When you think of a someone who sells weed, you probably don’t picture an Orthodox Jew. But mom and pop team Shifra & Alex Klein of Mitzva Herbal Collective, located in West Hollywood, California, are not your typical Orthodox Jews. We sat down the other day to discuss this exciting brand new niche of the cannabis industry. Alex described it as filling a void that they’ve seen in the community. There are so many Orthodox Jews who are ill and could use cannabis to relieve their symptoms but either can’t or won’t go to a dispensary for fear of being seen and the stigma attached to it; and even if they could, cannot eat most edibles since they are not kosher.

64

got him some product and he got his appetite back, he was less nauseous, and was able to keep his food down again. He’s now back up to 140 pounds and is able to start chemo again. His daughter called us and said, ‘I don’t know if you understand how the morale of the house has changed, seeing your parent live again.

We’re all more positive now and he's back on his meds. We thought it was the end and now we have hope. You brought us all back to life again.’ So we’re not just helping the patient, we’re helping their families as well. That makes it worth the time and effort to do everything that we do. It’s a huge mitzvah (good deed). Hence our name! We’re not just promoting what we Kosher food has to be prepared in a certain way make, but also what we’re about. Doing mitzvahs and with certain ingredients. When it comes and encouraging others to do mitzvahs.” to medicinal needs, a rabbi will usually allow it, but why have to eat something not kosher I asked them if they were worried about if you don’t have to! They explained that they having their names and faces associated wanted to include observant Jewish people, but with cannabis, especially while living in a not necessarily cater only to them. Also, they conservative community. “You know what? I pointed out that a lot of non Jews also prefer don’t care,” laughs Shifra. “We want to help the kosher products because their ingredients are community,” added Alex. “If our faces get out cleaner and more pure than non kosher products. there because of it, so be it.” Shifra explained to “We knew this Rabbi in our community who me that they have four children in the Jewish was sick with cancer. He had been undergoing Orthodox school systems and that she’s also a chemo and had gotten down to 90 pounds. special education teacher. “We are very open They could no longer continue his treatment with our kids. They know exactly what we’re because he was too weak,” Shifra explains. “We doing. We explained to them that this is a plant EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

TEXT HERE MEDICATING KOSHER that God gave us. A healing plant and we’re using it as a source, a vessel, to help heal people. We’re so open with them that they know what THC, CBD, sativa and indica are. In the house we always hear, ‘Mom!! Can we eat this?’”, Shifra laughs. “They’re like straight up trained. I told my ten-year-old, you know you don’t have to talk about this at school, what mommy and daddy do. And she goes, ‘But why mommy? I’m so proud of you.’ It’s about educating our children and our community.”

In the interest of moderation, they follow the Colorado state recommendation of 10mg of cannabis per dose, so none of their products contain over that amount. Also, all of their products are lab tested for quality and proper dosing. They are always happy to share their lab results with members to offer full transparency and so patients feel comfortable knowing what they’re ingesting. Shifra calls herself the “Queen of Microdosing”.

Alex laughs too. “You know what? We want people to find us. We want people to know that we’re the place you can go to get the real, legit, OU certified kosher products. We want to be known for that. And they’re also parve (made without meat or milk products). Which means you can eat it with anything. Like if you need your medicine, we’re not gonna blindside you and say yeah it's kosher, but it’s also dairy so you have to wait three hours to eat it.” Another part of keeping kosher is not eating milk and meat products together, so the parve ingredients ensure that members can medicate at any time of day and with any kind of meal.

She explains, “You don’t see a lot of edibles in microdoses. So let’s say you're a new user, or a child, you don’t want to over do it. And you don’t want to have to break off little pieces of things. No child wants a crumb of something. They want a whole cookie. And there’s less chance of overdoing it.” They can provide custom made products, as well. So let's say you have a child who can only eat peanut butter because it’s the only thing that won’t make them nauseous; they will make something specifically for their needs.

We provide that comfort through our edibles and through emotional support and education.” They also make their own infused coconut oil from scratch that smells absolutely delicious! I got a chance to taste all of their products and I’m happy to say that there is zero plant taste. They are really just as good as Bubbe used to make! And all of their edibles have either CBD only or a CBD/THC mix.

They can also make trips to other dispensaries if they cannot provide their member with what they are looking for, and deliver to them. All of their services are donation based. For members who are bedridden or would prefer to not walk into a doctor's office, they can get a medical recommendation on their website through their partnership with Hello MD in under twenty minutes. With Passover coming up we discussed how they also plan to make holiday-themed products year round, including infused kosher peppermint bark for Christmas. Since most Jewish holidays can be summed up with, “They tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat,” one could arguably say that edibles could only enhance those celebrations. If you’re ready for some “High” Holidays, you can sign up for the collective on their site MitzvaHerbal.com and follow them on Instagram and Facebook as well. Their entire focus is on support, education, and giving back to their community. It was such a pleasure to meet such wonderful people who are clearly in this for the right reasons. Shifra says, “For us it's about doing mitzvahs. We are the pioneers in our community. And it’s progressive for the Jewish people. So we’re hip now, yeah?” She laughs. “I don’t know if my teenagers would agree.”

Edibles Magazine Issue 34

Also, since Jews cannot light fire on the Sabbath, these edibles enable members to medicate without breaking any religious restrictions during that time of the week. So there’s a real need that is being filled with the availability of kosher edibles. Shifra adds, “We are the first ones on the entire west coast to have OU (Orthodox Union) certification. It’s a pretty big deal. OU is one of the largest and most well known kosher certifications. We had to redo our kitchen, buy new appliances, and list every single ingredient to submit to them, down to the flour. We meet all the standards now. We’re not open on the Sabbath or Jewish holidays and everything is prepared in our completely kosher commercial kitchen. It was a lot of work, but if that’s what it's gonna take for someone to pick it up or not because of its kosher status, then it’s worth it for us. A lot of what we do is make people feel comfortable, because it can be an uncomfortable situation to be in.

FOOD SCIENCE

Reasons Not to Use Supermarket Ingredients To Make Edible Products Rachel Zemser

I am here to advise you not to do this. Perhaps it's ok when you are at your VERY early ideation stage and want to create some gold standard concepts however as you begin to make prototypes to show investors or potential manufacturers, using ingredients from the supermarket is never a good idea. Here are the reasons why: Inconsistencies in Functional Ingredients: In the food industry, ingredients like xanthan, pectin and carrageenan come in many different forms. There are Alpha and Lambda versions, there are high and low methoxy and lots of other specific varieties, each of which has a specific function and works well in certain food environments. The store bought version is typically generic and designed to more or less work in a variety of applications. A better approach is to contact a legitimate hydrocolloid manufacturer and ask for a sample of gum that fits your application. Companies like TIC Gums and Ingredion have websites and experts on hand to assist you. Ingredients with Unknown “Formulas”: If you use a salsa or a jalapeno jam or a spice blend in your Issue No. 34 I Page 65

recipe, you are making it difficult for yourself to recreate your recipe later on. The fresh jalapeno salsa you bought at the deli is only available at THAT deli. A better approach is to create your own “sub” recipe of salsa and document the amount of everything that's in it. High End Ingredients: There are lots of ingredients that have less expensive siblings that you can use. Try to find a more common similar substitute whenever possible. For example, heirloom tomatoes are beautiful but if you wanted to buy a truckload to make an heirloom tomato salsa with- it would be very expensive and make your finished product unaffordable. Sometimes you have to just bite the bullet and use a more generic mainstream version instead. Exotic Ingredients: Greek honey made from thyme flowers is great but you may have to settle for the regular clover kind. Greek honey is expensive and not affordable at the industrial level. When you start your recipe creation, don’t start with the exotic stuff, use the more common versions at all times. Your early stage R&D work is going to be time consuming. You will be making multiple batches in the kitchen and getting your feedback from family and friends. You want to make something that is as close as what you CAN make (in a manufacturing plant) as possible. Find a food science consultant to help you source out industrial ingredients that are affordable and available in bulk. It will save you time and money in the long run. I often get start up companies coming to me with their handmade prototypes that they would like to scale into something that can be commercialized. Their early prototypes are usually made with ingredients that they bought at their local supermarket. They may have hand chopped fresh fruit or used a “seasoning blend” that they bought in bulk at whole foods or used a supermarket brand of Pectin.

Munchies B Gone Chew Away The Munchies

Keiko Beatie

Edibles Magazine Issue 34

Here it is! The gum that takes away that intense “Munchie Craving” when you smoke. Munchies Be Gone is the brainchild of pharmacologist, Doctor Bill Massey of Northwestern University. It contains no THC or CBD, is gluten free, sugar free, no GMOs and allergen free. The gum has various proteins that once chewed bind it with various receptors within the brain that control the hunger patterns. Plus the chewing mechanisms assist with cutting down the craving aspects of smoking. Paul Epner and Richard Zimmer worked on getting this product as they both had experience with the chronic “Munchie” factors with smoking cannabis through the years. With Doctor Massey the research and testing came through and I myself experienced a munchie and cotton mouth free experience. The gum comes in Cool Mint flavor at this time and in the near future Chocolate Chip and Strawberry will market as well. If you smoke and have a tendency to get the munchies, it is suggested that you chew within 10 minutes of smoking and the gum will keep the cravings away for about two hours with two pieces. Suggested retail is $8.99 for 20 pieces and may be purchased online at www.munchiesbgone.com Issue No. 34 I Page 76 EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

Opponents said the measure doesn’t do enough to protect the community, while the supporters said Measure U will provide oversight and transparency. La Mesa rejected a similar ballot measure in 2012, and banned the cultivation and manufacturing of medical marijuana, and the operation of dispensaries.
