LETTER FROM THETEXT EDITOR HERE TEXT HERE Greetings my friends, It’s that time again - the end of the year, and the beginning of a new one. Like Old King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes and The Byrds restated in their 1965 number one hit song, Turn! Turn! Turn!: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, a time to reap that which is planted.”

What I’m saying is, everything changes but we must all keep strong and carry on. New laws and regulations are finally here for the state of California’s adult use recreational cannabis and they could definitely be better. They’re far too restrictive and are already upsetting a lot of people and businesses too. We go into great detail in this issue and outline all of the regulatory changes most likely to affect you as a patient. The continual evolution of this industry is fascinating to see and hopefully these are growing pains. Like Patrick Swayze’s character “Dalton” told us in the 1989 movie Roadhouse: “It’ll get worse before it gets better.” I’m hoping the part about eventually getting better is true, because it didn’t really happen in Roadhouse.

We went to Kauai, Hawaii for The International Cannabis Business Conference in early December and took the opportunity to shoot some stunning photos of Infused Edibles’ line of CBD products on a very beautiful beach there. The conference was a lot of fun and the island feels absolutely magical. Doug Benson was a special guest and he ate chocolates containing magic psilocybin Issue No. 41 I Page 12
mushrooms someone gave him that he believed were completely normal. He was onstage the next day complaining that the chocolates had kept him up all night when he learned that he’d actually been tripping, during his act while he was warming up the crowd for Morgan Heritage and that was pretty hilarious. Morgan Heritage was incredible to see and hear perform live. We met a lot of super cool people on that trip. In other news, the newly formed Edibles List Bowling Team competed Sunday December 17th in The Big Lebongski Cannabis Industry Bowling Tournament in Santa Monica, AND WE WON! We now advance to The Tournament of Champions on April 22 in Burbank, where the grand championship team gets to take home The Big Lebongski trophy, which happens to currently be missing. In a turn of fate similar to The Big Lebowski’s heist caper, the actual Big Lebongski trophy was stolen and a reward is being offered for it’s safe return: a 1 year supply of Supreme Organics cannabis edibles! If you’ve got any leads, let us know or contact Gary at thebiglebongski.com. We did win a hand blown glass bowling pin-bong trophy and it totally works and everyone on the team: Tommy Bechtold, Athena Fatale, Savanaha Lamp, and myself each also got nice little glass bowling pin pipes. We fully plan on taking home the championship trophy once it’s found or replaced come 4/20 weekend so stay tuned. As always: Don’t forget to smile at your budtender, tip your delivery driver and always know your dose. Medicate well and welcome to the future. “Truth is not obliged to stick to possibilities.”

Utah Pushing Forward with CBD Laws
TEXT HERE
Lindsay Culver
Earlier in 2017, Utah lawmakers decided to dismiss the chance at joining more than half of all U.S. states with passing a broad medical marijuana law. Instead, Utah gave state colleges and other institutions a green light to research the medical impacts of the drug with the hope of having comprehensive date next year. They misgauge the time it would take to research the medical possibilities, likely taking years which would require researchers to dissect the depths of bureaucracy that delays and derails research.
Edibles Magazine Issue 41
The hesitation is from marijuana being a Schedule I drug among ecstasy, LSD, and heroin; while highly addictive Demerol, Fentanyl, and OxyContin are listed as Scheduled II.
14
Advocates and lawmakers pushed for the drug to be declassified and regrouped along with such drugs as opiates and cocaine, which have medical uses but are still illegal for recreational use. In 2014, Utah passed Charlie’s law which allowed patients with epilepsy to purchase registration cards so they can possess
CBD oil with less than .3 percent THC without fear of getting in trouble with prosecution. This fell short of addressing the broader need for medical cannabis. Utah has had years of failed attempts to legalize medical marijuana; in 2018 they are pushing the law to the voters. Medical marijuana advocates in Utah received the go-ahead from state election officials in August 2017 to start gathering the necessary signatures to qualify the measure for the November 2018 ballot. The Utah Patients Coalition officials have had time from August 2017 until the end of December 2017 to get hit their goal of 113,143 signatures required before the January 2018 legislative session. If this legislation wins voter approval, it would allow a limited number of cannabis outlets and physicians would be permitted to prescribe marijuana for certain medical conditions. Some of the medical conditions that would be included are cancer, chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism and Alzheimer's disease. Smoking cannabis, driving while intoxicated from medical cannabis and public use would remain illegal.

What You Need to Know About the Upcoming Changes in the Laws
without the acquisition of investors, strategic partners or both. Licensing costs are high and so are all of the new taxes. For makers of edibles there are even more changes happening. The new regulations are very specific about what will now be allowed when it comes to making and distributing cannabis infused edibles. There’s a 100mg cap and the product must be separated into ten individually wrapped 10mg doses (I personally don’t feel anything under 30-40mg minimum.) No more cute shapes that will appeal to children, so say goodbye to gummy bears or worms or anything else resembling a recognizable animal, creature, little person, or other cute shaped object like a tiny candy hat or chair. Some edibles makers will survive by teaming up with other struggling companies in the hope that their combined resources will allow them to continue operating under the new regime. Others will simply have to quit and many have already begun to close up shop in anticipation of being pushed out of the market by the limitations being imposed by the new laws. More and more we

The future of edibles and legalized recreational adult use cannabis in California is rapidly approaching as we all knew it would and many manufacturers are doing their very best to prepare for the new regulatory rules being imposed by the state. While the general public seems pretty thrilled with the idea of being able to “buy legal weed”, those of us who’ve been occupying the medical cannabis space for any amount of time feel more like there is less being gained than there is being lost. For anyone willing to spend 20 minutes talking online to a doctor for forty dollars annually to be granted the privilege of being able to have a 1500mg THC treat delivered direct to their door, the new regulations are troubling, especially for genuine medical patients suffering from chronic pain, debilitating diseases, anxiety and depression. This is probably how Danica Patrick felt when she turned 16 and was finally legally allowed to drive the speed limit. Most voters seemed to think they’d be able to begin purchasing cannabis at stores like Target and Rite-Aid beginning in 2018, but the truth is they’ll need to buy it in a special adult use recreational store that adds a new 15% sales tax. If the product being purchased isn’t already pre-packaged in a specially compliant exit bag, the customer will need to purchase one from the store. It is definitely going to be a lot more expensive for everyone to continue, from the seed salesman to the person eating that marijuana infused cookie and perhaps over 100 people in between. Smaller companies will not be able to afford to stay in the game

COVER STORY are hearing rumors and whispers that it will just be easier to move operations back to the black market and it isn’t hard to see why people would feel that way. We’ll be going into further technical details about exactly what the recreational regulations will mean in terms of changes and how those changes will be effecting both vendors and patients.

We spoke to Chris Cross, CEO and creator of Infused Edibles, whose products are featured in the photos here taken in Kauai, Hawaii during The International Cannabis Business Conference, about the future of cannabis, edibles, and the recreational market. Chris has been in business with his company for over five years selling THC edibles in California and CBD edibles everywhere, and his menu features the highest number of different individual product skus in the entire industry. He helped to enlighten us as to what’s happening with all of the new legislation and what it means for this business. Here’s some of the finer points on what’s coming and exactly what it means for the seemingly uncertain future of edibles.

MOVING TOWARDS HEMP CBD EDIBLES AND OTHER PRODUCTS Hemp is definitely the direction many cultivators and product manufacturers will be moving toward. It can be sold in the regular retail market and enable the vendor to avoid the extra sales tax and exit bag costs associated with selling in a cannabis store. Hemp comes from both the seeds and the stalk of industrial hemp cannabis plants, and cannabidiol oil or CBD hemp oil is an organic botanical concentrate high in CBD compounds. There are more than 85 cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant so far,
and CBD is the second most common after tetrahydrocannabinol. Cannabinoids are special chemicals found in cannabis that have the ability to provide much needed relief to both people and animals who suffer from of a wide variety of medical conditions. The cannabinoid molecules of the plant enter the body and activate certain cannabinoid receptors that are found naturally. Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring cannabis compound present in cannabis plants. It is not psychoactive like other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, such as tetrahydrocannabinol. Despite its lack of psychoactive abilities, researchers have shown that cannabidiol possesses significant antioxidant and neuroprotective properties that have been shown by researchers to be beneficial in the treatment of neurological disorders. CBD is found in all parts of the cannabis plant but is the most prevalent in the female plant’s flower resin glands. Hemp CBD concentrate is made from hemp containing high-cannabidiol that contains a low tetrahydrocannabinol level. The low levels of THC make the CBD oil nonpsychoactive. Hemp belongs to the genus Cannabis sativa and has been cultivated for thousands of years as a source of fiber, edible seeds, edible oil, lubricant, and as a fuel. The hemp "seed" is actually an achene: a simple dry fruit with a hard shell, just like a sunflower seed. It is considered one of the most versatile and economical plants, with many uses from food to bio-fuel. Researchers have found that applying the oil to areas of the skin suffering from acne breakouts often clears up the troubled areas quickly. When ingested, the oil provides anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory effects, which is highly beneficial for many different health conditions. Hemp seeds can be turned into hemp seed oil, butter, hemp milk and hemp flour. The list of food applications goes on and on. Hemp is considered one of the most efficient plants for biofuel as an alternative to gasoline. Over the years, hemp seeds have been part of the food supply in many cultures around the world. In parts of Asia, roasted hemp seeds are eaten as a salty

AN EXPLOSION OF NEW PRODUCTS IN THE CBD SECTOR As the regulations and restrictions on edible products containing tetrahydrocannabinol become more and more limiting to manufacturers, many people in the industry are shifting focus away from THC and moving towards CBD. For those of us who have been immersed in the medical cannabis world or had access to legal product for any amount of time, CBD is something we’ve been aware of for quite a while. It’s easy to forget that a good majority of the public is unfamiliar with the idea of any form of cannabis having medicinal benefits without any of the psychoactive side effects associated with using marijuana. It is believed that CBD interacts with the body through the body’s endocannabinoid system. These systems regulate the body’s appetite, sleep cycle, mood, hormonal balance and immune response system. CBD and hemp oils are each made from different parts of the plant and have different purposes. CBD is a compound found in hemp flowers, so in the extraction process you pull as much of it from the plant matter as possible and then purify it further during processing. Hemp oil is made from pressing hemp seeds and is used in a wide variety of products including new forms of pharmaceuticals. LOW DOSE EDIBLES AND NO MORE 100 MG EDIBLES California’s adult-use market starts on January 1st of 2018 and cannabis edibles sold in adult use recreational dispensaries will now need to be a total strength not in excess of 100 milligrams of THC. Edibles must also be divided into clearly identifiable individual servings of no more than 10mg in strength each. Microdosing is a growing trend as cannabis consumption
becomes more mainstream and is the practice of ingesting edible cannabis products that have such a low serving size that there are almost no noticeable psychoactive effects. Edibles are considered “micro-dosed” if they have 5mg or less of active THC in a single serving. The new limits will apply to medicinal cannabis products as well but the more potent edibles will still be available for well into the new year. High dose products will allowed at medical cannabis dispensaries until July 1st, 2018 provided they have additional labeling that clearly identifies them as being stronger than the new 100 mg cap. Patients will have to make their own potent edibles. CHILD RESISTANT AND TAMPER EVIDENT PACKAGING WILL
BECOME THE NEW STANDARD Child resistant and safe packaging has been a long time goal of many companies and lobbyists in the cannabis industry, so many people see this as a welcome change. California has also now included tamper evident packaging in the new regulations. This means that the product will now be packaged in a container within which a product is sealed so that the

snack food like popcorn or peanuts. The most famous consumer of hemp seeds in history was the Buddha, who ate them during the time of his fasting and enlightenment. Tests have also shown scientists that eating hemp seeds in any form could aid, if not heal, people suffering from immune deficiency diseases.

contents cannot be opened without the clear and obvious destruction of the seal. Things like shrink bands and heat-sealable mylar bags, that must be broken to open the product, will be cost effective options for creating compliant and tamper evident cannabis infused products. It gets even more technical and complicated from there and into details that most of us don’t normally think about, so bear with us. Now, according to the new regulatory rules, if an edible product that contains an ingredient, flavoring, coloring or any kind of additional additive that contains a major kind of food allergen, the word “contain,” followed by the list of the applicable major food allergens must be listed. The information panel text must be in a type size of no less than 6 point font and in relation to the size of the primary panel and container, unless there isn’t enough room on the container available to print all of the necessary information in a type size of no less than 6 point font. If that happens the label will also need to include the warning statements in a type size of no less than 6 point font, and the product needs to be
NO MORE PEOPLE OR INSECT OR FRUIT SHAPED CANDY Edibles resembling fruit, animals, or humans will be prohibited beginning January 1st, and products may not resemble or be referred to as “candy” after then. Labels can’t have cartoons, images, or other messaging that could potentially appeal to kids, and they can't include any kind of health promises or guarantees that can't readily be scientifically proven. The health department also reserves the right to ban any future product that it deems too appealing to children. Packaging that has cartoon characters, images, or phrases that are popularly used to advertise to children, will not be permitted. Also now banned under the new regulations are: “Any cannabis product that the Department determines is easily confused with commercially available foods without cannabis.” This would be up to the California Department of Public Health to determine on a case by case basis. The times are changing and this industry is changing with it, but we won’t all be changing in all of the same ways. Keep reading in the coming months and we’ll be sure we continue bringing you all of the latest and up to date news when it comes to what you are and aren’t allowed to eat when you want to get medicated. Look for all of the great products available from Infused Edibles, including dried fruit, nuts, organic gummies, trail mix, and beef jerky. In California all of their products can be purchased in 150 or 300 mg doses of THC but it seems that will change soon. You’ll still be able to get it all in those same strengths in CBD nationwide. he California State Senate unanimously passed a bill identical to Colorado’s but they have yet to require edible companies to mark their food products. The other legal states seem content leaving edibles unmarked but this creates a precarious situation for consumers when their cannabis treats look exactly like normal food. Consumers currently have an option to put their edibles in a food storage lockbox. This is a practical step towards protecting others from accidental consumption, but even the most careful among us can accidentally drop a gummy bear or misplace a cookie somewhere to be found by an unassuming adult or child. What are their options?

Will California Be Ready for Legalization? B. Le Grand
The short answer is no, California is not ready for legalization. With less than 2 months to implement emergency regulations cannabis entrepreneurs are scrambling to figure out what cities are allowing licensing, where they can realistically find a location and get a license, or figuring out who they can partner with. There are 482 cities in the state of California, and less than 20% of the cities have regulation in place for medical or adult-use cannabis. Some of the cities that are going to be ready come January are Los Angeles Pre-Ico Prop D Collectives, Santa Cruz, San Jose, San Diego, San Francisco, Berkeley and just a few others. Most cities are either putting a ban on it, or allowing only medical to continue to take place until they can establish a framework for adult-use cannabis regulations. It seems the current municipal trend is playing the “wait and see” game. Operators have a 6 month grace period to comply and get on board with the seed to sale tracking system, but taxes must be collected by distributors and retailers beginning January 1st, 2018. If a city allows recreational cannabis, retailers will be able to supply both medical and adult-use products from medical manufacturers. Temporary state licenses must be acquired to continue business, which are only good for 4 months, with the option to renew once. Operators must also acquire a new “Cannabis Tax Permit” in addition to a regular California seller’s permit. At the end of the grace period, there leaves question as to which manufacturers will have gotten licensed for adult-use in their town and will be able to continue supplying for adult-use retailers. High-dose edibles must be phased out and switched over to 10 marked 10mg doses at 100mg total cap per infused product. Retail tax for both medical and adultuse is 15% (although we believe the state made a mistake and should have created a lower medical tax rate for easier access for actual patients, like Colorado did). Retailers will be allowed to supply any back stock of inventory that they owned prior to January 1st, 2018, continued on next page

Will California Be Ready for Legalization? but will no longer be able to purchase any edibles over 100mg from manufacturers. With high costs creating a barrier to entry, many brands won’t be able to make it through or find licensing. The cities that have issued licenses have limits on the amount of licenses they issue. Most licenses depend on a properly zoned location as per the municipalities’ requirements, which makes real estate inflate in green zones, creating a larger barrier to entry. Long story short, it’s a crazy rat race that the industry is going through, and there aren’t enough licenses available for the amount of businesses that want in. How will the consumer suffer? It’s predicted that there will be a lack of supply available during the transition grace period and that will inflate the price of cannabis and cannabis infused products. Then within a couple of years the market will be so flooded that the average wholesale price per pound could drop as low as $500 from the current $1400 average. The current average retail price of a 100mg edible is $10. With the new taxes in place and costs of operating, and child-resistant tamper-evident packaging creating inflation of prices, we are going to see that average price jump up at least triple. The consumer will end up walking out the door having spent $40 on a single edible. Anyone desiring super potent 200mg+ edibles will need to learn to make their own products at home. Let’s not forget that the days of the $30-40 eighths are over. The minimum price of an average greenhouse or outdoor eighth is going to shoot up to $50-60. It goes without saying the State’s new regulations are going to create an even larger black market than what exists right now. Real patients suffering from pain and cancer need large concentrated amounts of THC as they build up a tolerance with their pain management. In a lot of cases we see patients that require 500mg-1000mg just to get through the day. I believe that we are going to see people take advantage of the black market and avoid the burden and cost of having to go through becoming compliant or getting legal. Regulation is good, but over regulation creates a black market. Issue 41 I Page 26

PRODUCT REVIEWS King Chameleon’s Take and Bake Cannabis Brownie Mix Siouxsie Q
Edibles Magazine Issue 41
My girlfriend recently started using cannabis again after a long hiatus, and a lot has changed in the cannabis landscape since her days of blunts and dime bags (though she still rolls a blunt like a pro--it’s just like riding a bike, apparently.) She’s always had a sizable sweet tooth, so the smorgasbord of tasty treats on the market these days has been a delightful revelation.
30
Enter King Chameleons home-baked medicated edibles: There are thousands of choices when it comes to pre-packaged, premade infused treats, but very few that offer the Papa Murphy’s take and bake model. I love getting all June Cleaver for my partner now and then and pretending to be a perfect 1950’s archetype of feminine domesticity, but in between radical politics and subversive art creation, who has the time? King Chameleons’ medicated brownies and cookies take all the guesswork out of making your own stoney baked goods at home, filling your kitchen with the comforting smell of fresh chocolate chip cookies or brownies that emerge hot from the oven, ready to be paired with ice cream or a frosty cup of holiday eggnog, and allowing me to impress my girlfriend who loves infused sweets. The chocolate cookies pack contains 600 mg of THC per bag, while the brownies have just a smidge more at 700mg. All one needs is a baking pan, a mixing bowl and spoon, and a couple of eggs to get the party started. In less than 30 minutes of sweet smelling magic time, you’ll have a pan of fresh edible treats that you can custom dose to your comfort level and THC tolerance. The best part? The President of King Chameleon treats is a bad ass babe, Camille Van Patten, and she’s
mobilized a bevy of gorgeous smokes-models to endorse the product. From tatted up alt models, including several well known Suicide Girls, to Los Angeles fitness models--beautiful women are behind this innovative product.
A few tips for the first time baker: try to resist the temptation to lick the pan. For one, the weed taste is very strong before the batter fully bakes, so you may not enjoy the experience. Also: raw eggs can give you salmonella! And don’t forget the most important part of the experience, as President Van Patten says, remember to enjoy getting royally baked!

My parents have been smoking weed way longer than I’ve even been alive. They’ve clocked years of experience in cannabis consumption and pioneering that I may never match, and yet their familiarity with the new generation of cannabis products and devices is still a brand new world of exploration for them. Both Mom and Dad have been every day cannabis users for decades, but each has found that they are now less and less able to tolerate ingesting actual smoke. As a result, my mother has become the vape pen queen, taking sips from the vape attached to a lanyard around her neck in between crocheting potholders and baby blankets. My dad has become a world class infused baker, crafting THC infused treats like Pumpkin “Pot” Pie, and Infused Rum Balls to effectively dose the family into submission, but he himself doesn’t particularly enjoy the high that comes from eating THC. So when I brought home the Dipper Vaporizer from Dipstick Vapes along with a Speakeasy 710 Dab Dispenser for the holidays, my family was intrigued, but dubious. Though my brother and I are die hard dabbers, Pops never
The Dipper Vaporizer is a great device for first time dabbers who may be intimidated by the traditional experience of heating up a nail and using a full dab rig. The Dipper Vaporizer combines the technology of a nectar collector and a vape pen for an low impact way to consume wax and oil products, such as Speakeasy 710’s 75% THC golden cannabis oil which comes in a handy 1 gram, clean and discreet dab dispenser that takes both the mess and the hassle out of dealing with cannabis oil. The device contains a secret metal pin hidden in the bottom of the dispenser and attaches to the tip. Simply twisting the dispenser creates the ultimate applicator for dabbing, wax joints, or even refilling Speakeasy 710 vape cartridges. Both Mom and Dad happily dabbed their way through Thanksgiving and as I packed my bags and my leftovers to head home to Los Angeles the following day, Dad casually asked if I was bringing the Dipper Vaporizer with me, or if they got to keep it. Though I’d been looking forward to incorporating the Dipper Vaporizer into my cannabis regime, I was happy to part with it for the good of the family. Introducing a new way for my veteran stoner parents to enjoy cannabis is one of the best presents I could ask for this holiday season--aside from maybe another Dipper Vaporizer and a refill of Speakeasy 710 oil. Santa, I hope you’re listening.

The Problem Salver by The Collective Collection Jakki Hernandez
I don’t know about you, but as a chronic pain sufferer and cannabis patient for over 15 years I have grown to love this ever-growing cannabis industry. When I first entered into the medical cannabis world, I would have to use homemade cannabis tinctures or smother a canna coconut oil over my body to provide relief. Nowadays I am lucky to have so many lab tested, effective products to choose from. The Problem Salver, by The Collective Collection was a score of a freebie in a gift bag I received at a Cannabis Social event, and I must say I have been a satisfied customer ever since.
Edibles Magazine Issue 41
I have 2 different chronic pain conditions and have learned to use all different forms of cannabis to ease my symptoms, but when it comes to topicals getting “high” is not as high on my benefit list as is the efficacy of the topical I am using.
32
The Problem Salver comes in a small gold tin that is filled with 2 fl oz. and 250 mg of THC goodness. To start, the certified organic salve is one of the best smelling topicals I have found. A slight floral aroma with hints of clary sage, orange and menthol. Once you unscrew the lid your nose is welcomed by the beautiful herb infused aroma. This scent is so stimulating it also cleared my sinuses during flu season. Just a little wave over the waxy surface with my finger and a gentle rub into my palms before taking a deep inhale, not only opened my sinuses but also gave my senses a nice aromatherapy bath calming my nerves one breath at a time.
The lid also states their salve is a triple medicated organic topical pain reliever that is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and includes a special skin regenerating formula. I was instantly intrigued and continued to dive in. When it comes to pain relief, the “Problem Salver” definitely lived up to its name. My problem is the symptoms of my pain condition are extensive and include: swelling, inflammation, hypersensitivity on the skin as well as bone and nerve pain. It is very difficult to find a product that can help all of those at once. This salve was incredible. I was able to use the back of my nail over the top of the surface to distribute to first dose. At first it almost felt like the wax from a soy candle, as I started to massage it over my foot I found that it easily absorbed into an oil that was moisturizing like a lotion. Once applied I instantly felt relief just massaging the oil into the sore areas of my foot. It felt relaxing and instantly soothed the hypersensitive nerve sensation. After about 30 minutes, a left foot that was once so swollen my cute giraffe sock left a not so cute giraffe indention from the middle of my leg to my toes, was now starting to slowly disappear. Not only did the swelling go down to match its normal right foot brother, the pain, both nerve and bone, had gone from a level 9 to a manageable level 4. Trust me when I say when you live in a pain level of 8 the majority of your waking life, anything that can give this relief without also affecting other organs is a win! Now to solve my second problem, “Where can I find this product”? It appears they are very hard to find, ask your favorite shop to carry this amazing product so you can get the relief I did with this, “magic salve.”

VCC Brands - Cannabis Quencher Jakki Hernandez
This 100mg THC infused Strawberry Lemonade was very refreshing. The taste was tart and sweet with the very slightest taste of cannabis. I enjoyed the flavor but the most refreshing aspect of this drinkable was that it gave me energy. Yes, you heard correctly this drink should have been an energy drink with the amount of focus and alertness I received while drinking. See, today is office moving day, and I was responsible for organizing the inventory room. Most people would drive to their trusty corner coffee shop, while I reach for my choice of cannabis drinks. My first choice, Cannabis Quencher. I liked that I could drink it in phases and screw the top on when I needed to get back to work. It took me about 3 hours to drink the whole 16 fl. oz. bottle. I know, I know I could hear cannabis pros everywhere mocking me, “3 hours” to finish one drink? Yes, I titrate most of my edibles and drinkables, not everything has to be consumed in one sitting and
this is a perfect example. I felt the positive effects after consuming about a 1/3 of this delicious lemonade. Technically you could chug this, it tasted that good, but I’d recommend going slow as I felt the euphoric effects within the first 30 minutes which increased with each portion I guzzled. These effects lasted about 5 hours after finishing the lemonade, when you titrate you are able to feel the benefits in a more controlled manner and since I was so busy with the move I was able to notice I didn’t need my typical breaks, which means this baby was a strong one. I was focused and alert and oddly enough my pain and anxiety levels were surprisingly lower than normal. I would say, Cannabis Quencher Lemonade is a drinkable you would want to take to a social event. I would love to have this at a concert or cannabis event where I could party and enjoy the beautiful buzz this drink provides. Cannabis Quencher is by far my first choice when it comes to choosing a hydrating beverage that also provides energy. I’m pleased to announce as an added bonus they also make sugar free and CBD versions along with so many other delicious flavors I can’t wait to crack open.
Black Bunny Liquorice THC Mints I absolutely love black licorice flavored anything--even the ice cream from Mary Ann’s in Santa Cruz that turns your mouth a terrifying witchy black/green. It’s an acquired taste, surely, especially if you’ve ever been unlucky enough to suffer a massive hangover, but for those of us who love it, nothing else comes close. I grew up eating Black Ropes and Crows candies, and my parents swear I wouldn’t have made it into this world without help from a bottle of Ouzo. But black licorice candy is harder than ever to acquire these days. It’s fallen out of fashion and even a box of Good and Plenty is hard to come by in the average I-5 corridor gas station. This is why I’m obsessed with Black Bunny mints, a new THC breath mint that harnesses the tummy soothing powers of licorice and cannabis in a mild and discreet candy that quells anxiety and quells nausea--and with no
black color, these fennel flavored mints leave teeth, gums and tongues pink, fresh, and one hundred percent kissable. With their eye catching, adorable logo, paired with their effervescent Ariana Grande infused branding and marketing, Black Bunny is a player to watch out for in the cannabis mints game. As someone who often suffers from appetite anxiety and occasional upset stomach, I’ve experienced firsthand how much of a lifesaver these little microdose (2.5mg THC) mints can be before an important business dinner or a big interview. However, as convenient and discreet as the white mints are, what I wouldn’t give for a classic, chewy, dark black licorice candy that also got me a little high. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that a higher dosage, chewy, black, licorice product might be in the future for the phenomenal folks over at Black Bunny. In the meantime, I know that the cute tins of these fabulous THC treats will be making their way into my family’s stockings this Christmas Eve, for it certainly is the season for anxiety and overconsumption induced tummy aches. But never fret, Black Bunny’s got your back.

Strictly Edibles with Margaret Cho & Buck Angel Siouxsie Q
As I drove down Laurel Canyon Boulevard in my blue Mini Cooper nibbling on a 100 mg Key Lime pie donut from Strictly Edibles, the Bay Area based company known for its great tasting, high potency products, I pinched myself, just to make sure I was living real life. The edible wasn’t even close to kicking in yet, but the excitement bubbling up in my throat was undeniable as a barreled my way into the heart of Hollywood, where transgender sex educator superstar turned cannabis entrepreneur, Buck Angel, was waiting to escort me as his date to Margaret Cho’s Los Angeles engagement of her Fresh of the Bloat tour. As a young queer kid with big dreams, I had idolized both Buck and Margaret. They embody the fighting spirit of the LGBTQ movement by proudly defying preconceived notions about how a person’s gender and sexuality can and should be expressed. Now, I was preparing to spend the evening in the same room as both of these modern day icons—hopefully not way too high on a key lime pie flavored weed donut.
As the curtain rose and the house lights flickered on, I was endlessly relieved to find I was still able to give Margaret Cho the standing ovation she deserved. I had survived my duel with the donut and my head even felt clear enough to drive Mr. Angel home. Achievement unlocked. Siouxsie Q: 1 Key Lime Pie Donut: 0

I told the squealing fangirl inside me to cool it, as I met
Buck outside the lobby. We took a few puffs from his Pride Cannabis vape pen, which helped calm my nerves, and headed in to sit down. The lights dimmed, and the giggles started flowing. Cannabis and comedy are one of life’s winning combinations—like peanut butter and jelly. As the 100 mg began to work its magic, I had to remind myself not to melt into my seat, and that while Buck was very nice to invite me to be his date for the evening, I probably did not have an open invitation to snuggle into his leather jacket for the duration for the performance. I was feeling giddy, giggly, and fine, until Margaret started a monologue about her recent dance with sobriety, illustrated by an anecdote about an unfortunate duel with a batch of THC infused edibles. The feeling of being too high from eating weed is a feeling I only wish on my ex-husband, and as Margaret regaled the audience with the horrors of her experience, I said a tiny prayer to the gods of weed, (as well as the nice folks over at Strictly Edibles) that I would not suffer the same fate that night as I tried to act cool in front of my offbeat teen idols.

Cannabis Security, How It's Changed and Why It's so Important B. Le Grand
In many cases when you attempt to report a cannabis related theft or crime to the authorities, the local police will tell you that it’s your own fault for being involved in the cannabis industry, and say, “that’s the nature of that business.” Well, it isn’t the nature of the business. The real reason most people got into the cannabis industry is because they wanted to help people with medicine. Helping people is the nature of the cannabis business, not selfishness and greed.
measure, now it’s mandated by regulation. Nune Gipson from OmniSentry Security says, “Cannabis and security are now synonymous. Security for cannabis is an essential everyday occurrence. Cannabis security differs from regular security because there is a new dynamic where possible issues and concerns occur that are only attributed to cannabis. In comparing cannabis and alcohol products, cannabis is much more valuable pound for pound. Criminal activity would be a better risk than stealing alcohol. Security has the unique job of protecting cannabis in all its forms. From guarding dispensaries and cultivation sites to keeping kitchens and manufacturers safe, security concerns are much more important.” When asked about the new regulations Nune commented, “The new laws will affect cannabis security in a positive way. It will require cannabis companies who have never hired private security companies to become compliant with the laws, which is a very good thing. Statistics prove cannabis related crimes often go unreported due the long time underground nature of cannabis. The new laws will bring a much needed light and protection that cannabis has never seen. The new laws require the cannabis industry to become more transparent than ever. Thus, the need for security to safeguard it every step of the way.”
More and more we see people’s intention turn from pure to corrupt because they get greedy. Almost every single cannabis related crime that has occured in our industry happened because it was an inside job, whether it was someone who has too much access or too much knowledge.
“Security in the Cannabis Industry has changed significantly in many ways throughout the years. Due to Cannabis not having so much exposure and not being formally legalized, everything was done pretty much in hiding. Which also means, owners or growers not hiring private security companies but instead, many growers Cannabis security used to be an optional themselves providing their own security, EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

I look forward to the day that you can actually report a cannabis crime, and it looks like that day is coming soon. Up until now, it was extremely difficult to report cannabis crimes. If a dispensary or grow was robbed, was it really an option to call the cops? Not exactly. Over the last few years I’ve seen everything happen in the industry from embezzlement via wire fraud, to petty theft attempted robberies of dispensaries, to large organized heists robbing grows with automatic weapons. My favorite story is when I was budtending on the West Side of Los Angeles, a guy came in, acted like he was going to sniff the mason jar of buds, proceeds to open his mouth like he’s drinking the buds, fits about an eighth in his mouth and walks out the door. It was clever and there was no stopping him, even with an armed guard on duty, the managers didn’t want the weed back after he did that, and the culprit knew that going in.

Cannabis Security, How It's Changed and Why It's so Important which was and still is illegal. Being in a cannabis business, as an owner you may not hire your own in-house security. The rules and regulations have become stricter as cannabis has become legal and more publicized within the States. Also, in the early years the industry didn’t see a need for security. As the industry became more profitable and publicized, it became more of a target for criminals,” she said.
merchant accounts for credit card processing, we are limited to very minimal digital payment options. “I feel the direction [of the future of cannabis security] is multi-faceted. As dispensaries become profitable, I can see businesses becoming cyber hostages, with their systems frozen until they pay a certain amount of bitcoin currency,” said Anthony Ruiz from Red Anchor Security.
It is going to become critical that every dispensary, manufacturer and even the state prepare their data systems for cyber threats in addition to physical threats. Until the banking issue is worked out for cannabis, that leaves a large amount of cash laying around all the time creating a physical target threat, and if the system that gets worked out is digitalonly we pose an even greater cyber security Anthony Ruiz from Red Anchor Security threat. says, “I feel the biggest mistake we make is assuming cannabis security is different The incident of a popular point of sale system from other businesses. I would say the in cannabis comes to mind when their servers business is very similar to securing jewelry, crashed last year and threw all dispensaries pharmaceuticals, or even a bank. If we look and vendors on their platform into encryption at cannabis as merely a good to be stolen like mode, not allowing for the access of any money or diamonds, how different do we of the stores’ data. They existed on shared need to adapt? But, if there was one glaring servers making them an easy target, top that risk, it would be the risk of theft. And until the with a rumor of an inside job, and you have banking issue is fixed, the need for physical the biggest cyber attack ever orchestrated in cannabis thus far. security will be a must.” While physical security is required for storefronts, retailers, manufacturers and cultivators, there is still the cyber security threats that exist within the cannabis industry. I personally have experienced being stolen from, by people who work for me. Then watched it happen to almost every company around me. It can happen in many ways, but as the banking issue does exist in cannabis not allowing cannabis companies to freely open 44
The future of cannabis security is going to be a full tactical approach that involves physical security, cyber security, and overall bulletproof standards of practice that inform each employee what the exact protocol is in the event of a security threat, whichever type it may be. GOLDEN GANJA GOOSE
DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350° F. • Wash and dry goose, like you would a chicken or turkey. Salt, pepper and sprinkle thyme inside the cavity, and fill with apple quarters and onions. If they don’t all fit, you can cook them alongside in a small, buttered dish (use cannabis butter). • Mix 1 tbsp salt with 1 cup of water and pour into the bottom of the roasting pan with 2 tbsp of the cannabis butter. Place the roasting rack on top. Pierce the goose skin in several places to let the fat drip out as it cooks. • Put the goose, breast-side down, on the roasting rack and place in oven for 50 minutes. Use the salt, butter and water mixture to baste the goose several times during this period. Add more water to drip pan if necessary. • Turn the goose over onto its back and cook, basting with more cannabis butter as needed, for 50 minutes. Let the goose rest for 5 minutes as you make the gravy. • To make the gravy: Mix 2 tbsp of the fat drippings with 2 tbsp flour in a small saucepan and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add the chicken broth, stirring well after each addition. Add salt, pepper, and thyme, if desired, to taste. Keep warm. • Serve with the cooked apples and onions. CANNABIS EVENTS UPDATE
The End of Cannabis Events As We Know It B. Le Grand
The way that California currently experiences cannabis events is over. The state Bureau of Cannabis Control decided to regulate cannabis events with licenses. Each application is a non-refundable $1,000, and the event license is a $5,000 expense that covers up to 10 events a year. This means all of our industry’s high dining events, local/secret seshes, pop-ups and basically any cannabis event you’ve ever been to that wasn’t at a fairgrounds will now be illegal. The new law states that in order to obtain a cannabis event state permit, you must first acquire local authorization for an event. Additionally, public cannabis events attempting to get licensed or permitted will only be allowed to take place at a fairgrounds or a location in association with the Department of Agriculture. Additionally, no alcohol will be allowed at cannabis events. The new law threatens to put a myriad of events at risk for being shut down or being fined for breaking the law. Many of the small event organizers don’t have the kind of funds required to pay the license fee or to even book a fairground location. Personally, the reason I started The Best of Edibles List Awards was because I didn’t want to go to another cannabis event at a far away fairground 40 plus minutes from Los Angeles. High Times, HempCon, Chalice Cup and High Life Festival that take place in San Bernardino or Victorville will most likely be able to get licensed and continue business as usual. However, another downside for event organizers and consumers is that only cannabis retailers will be able to vend at licensed cannabis events. Manufacturers, cultivators and distributors will not be able to have booths at these events anymore unless they have a dispensary license or delivery service license. This ultimately defeats the purpose of having an event where the consumers get to meet the makers of the brands and see all the new products available. That means 90% of the booths that used to be at the cannabis events will not be allowed to vend and there goes all the revenue that made the event possible. As a consumer, would you want to go to an event that was nothing but dispensary booths? You could just go to the dispensaries. Traditionally, it’s not even the retailers who get booths at cannabis events. It’s the chance for manufacturers to connect with their market. It is yet another way the regulations are pushing out the “little guy.” We can still submit our comments to the BCC to let them know some cannabis events aren’t 20,000-50,000 people turnouts. Some people don’t want to go to events like that. It is oddly reminiscent of Colorado banning all cannabis consumption events. We can only hope that the lawmakers will change their regulatory structure for cannabis events to allow micro events to take place that want to be legal and permitted. The laws are most certainly not going to stop small consumption networking events or pop-ups. As an event organizer myself, I predict that these new laws will just create a black market and drive the events underground. Issue No. 41 I Page 53

TOPICAL CANNABIS

WHAT IS A CANNABIS TOPICAL TREATMENT? One example of a cannabis topical treatment is to apply cannabinoids to the area of someone’s skin to treat an ailment. Often times users apply different types of cream or oil to treat various types of pain.
HOW MANY TYPES OF TOPICAL TREATMENTS ARE THERE? There are 3 popular forms of topicals that can be found at dispensaries right now. They are lotions, salves and a patch that sticks to your skin. It seems these applications are getting more sophisticated. There may also be other forms I am not aware of. IS IT BETTER TO USE A THC OR CBD TOPICAL? This area can vary for different users. Some might find success with one over the other. I always recommend trying both to see what works better for you. However, I highly recommend trying a topical that contains both THC and CBD.
EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
ASK DR. MIKE
WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WITH COLON, PROSTATE OR CERVICAL CANCER, SHOULD THEY USE A TOPICAL OR EDIBLE TO TREAT SYMPTOMS OF THOSE CONDITIONS? These different types of cancer can be difficult to treat with a topical since the issue may be a lot deeper underneath the skin. Consuming an edible, vaping or smoking could be a better treatment for these types of health ailments. IS IT TRUE THAT THERE IS TOPICAL CANNABIS FOR INTIMATE USE? Yes, there are various brands that make a topical cannabis sex lube! These oils claim to heighten the sexual experience through a THC infused sex lubricant.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS WITH USING CANNABIS TOPICAL TREATMENTS? One of the risks that come with using a topical can be an allergic reaction. Depending on what you’re applying the topical to, some major cuts on your body may not react well to a cannabinoid infused topical. I recommend applying a small amount to your skin initially. CAN YOU PUT SALVES AND LOTIONS ON AN OPEN WOUND? Yes! However, please be careful with the type of wound topicals are being applied to. I have personally used topicals for minor cuts and the healing process seemed to heal exceptionally faster. DO SALVES, LOTIONS OR OILS TREAT SCARS? Yes! Some oils help scars without infused cannabinoids. One of them is Tea Tree oil. If you’re able to find any topicals that include vitamin E as an ingredient, it may help treat your scars!

DO LOTIONS AND SALVES HELP EXTERNAL SKIN CONDITIONS OR JOINT AND MUSCLE PAIN? I have heard success stories for both types of treatments! Personally, I have applied the Topicanna brand lotion to an area of my skin that was burned and it absolutely progressed the healing process.

The Eviana Health Corporation, a Canadian healthcare products manufacturer has announced plans to begin harvesting over 1235 acres of hemp crop in Serbia in 2018, an increase of over 915 acres when compared to the 320 acres they harvested in Canada in 2017. The combined bales of hemp straw along with the organic hemp flowers, trim and seeds harvested this year prove the Canadian operation has been successful. Eviana plans to install a Euro Prima herb processing and selection machine in their herb storage and processing facility, located in the Northern Serbian village of Mladenovo to refine and package the hemp. They also purchased a new tractor and plough that have both been delivered to the facility to fully prepare them for the 2018 harvest. The Canadian company delivers customized consumer healthcare products using natural hemp strains of cannabis for cannabidiol based topicals, creams and other cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Different varieties of hemp have different qualities and the cannabinoid content can vary quite a lot. The Serbian hemp being harvested by Eviana is clean and organic with high levels of CBD (5%). The village of Mladenova has a Serb ethnic majority and the population is around 3,360 people. The history of Mladenovo starts way back in the mid thirteenth century when it was called “Bukin” after the Hungarian Count Buky. The village kept that name until after World War II, when the name was changed to Mladenovo, after Doctor Mladen Stojanović, a war hero. The villagers built a statue of Mladen Stojanović in the center of the village to honor his legacy. In the 1700s, Italian farmers and hemp seed strains were brought to Serbia, making hemp a very important crop until the earlier part of twentieth century when The Kingdom of Yugoslavia ratified the International Opium Convention and the Criminal Code of the Kingdom of Serbs passed, both in 1929. Earlier in 2017, the Serbian Green Party introduced a bill in the National Assembly that would legalize medical cannabis in The Republic of Serbia. Issue 41 I Page 62

Tasmanian Hemp Industry Creates Jobs
Patrick Ian Moore
Hemp hasn’t been legalized for very long in the country of Tasmania, but the Tasmanian hemp industry is already growing significantly and anticipating the sudden increase in demand for locally grown hemp crop. Tim Schmidt, the president of the Industrial Hemp Association of Tasmania recently told journalists: "There's been about $2 million invested in the last 18 months in Tasmania, as a result of the development of the hemp industry and about 12 new jobs created." Local Tasmanian food processor Forager Foods is installing a new dehuller to separate the hemp seeds used in food production. The hemp seed has a deliciously nutty flavour and is being marketed by many as the new 21st century superfood. The seed is being tested in a large variety of foods including ice cream, with the Tasmanian artisan ice cream and gelato company Van Diemens Land Creamery trying out two different hemp flavors. Hemp seeds are high in protein, high in fiber and high in omega 3 fats which are beneficial for the heart. The Southern Tasmanian company “13 Seeds” plans on cultivating three times as much hemp in 2018 as it did in 2017. The small business is being bombarded on a daily basis with multiple requests for hemp from local manufacturers hoping to use the seed in the production of bread, beer and more, including clothing and 13 seeds is rolling out more than a dozen food products themselves over the next year. Hemp seed is an incredibly good nutritional source and the people of Tasmania are looking more and more for healthier ways to improve and enhance their diets. The Industrial Hemp Association of Tasmania said it was conscious of ensuring the industry's growth is sustainable and would be looking for Tasmanian Government support in the amount of $150,000 over the next three years. The amount of hemp grown in Tasmania is expected to double in 2018 to about 1500 acres. The Industrial Hemp Association of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) have compiled a new and simplified licensing process which reflects the legislative requirements of the Government's new Industrial Hemp Act and supporting regulations. The citizen-sponsored initiative prohibits growing cannabis in residential zones, authorizes and regulates medical marijuana dispensaries, and limits commercial cultivation sites to industrial and manufacturing zones with a permit issued by the city. Opponents said the measure doesn’t do enough to protect the community, while the supporters said Measure U will provide oversight and transparency. La Mesa rejected a similar ballot measure in 2012, and banned the cultivation and manufacturing of medical marijuana, and the operation of dispensaries.
