Edibles Magazine Issue 32
LETTER FROM THETEXT EDITOR HERE TEXT HERE Greetings my friends,
Edibles Magazine Issue 32
Autumn is officially here, the Equinox occured on September 22. The full Harvest Moon will be on October 5th and you won’t want to miss that. It’s time to start thinking about those Halloween costumes and what infused foods you’ll be incorporating into your Thanksgiving day dinners. We’ve been almost too busy to think about any of that lately - The Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo in Los Angeles was immediately followed by The National Cannabis Industry Association Conference in Anaheim. There was so much to see and so many great people to meet it was difficult to keep track. At CWCBE the Edibles List team got to spend a bit of time with the legendary Reverend Al Sharpton and Keiko Beatie interviewed him (read it in this very issue). Roger Stone was dropped from the show as a keynote speaker and I never noticed if protestors showed up. On September 18th, we celebrated our very 1st Ros-HASH-anah HIGH HoliDAZE Special on the Edibles Show with special guests The Mitzva Herbal Company and Rakefet Abergel. We learned all about Kosher Cannabis, the High Holiday and more. It was a most delicious day and Rakefet recaps the whole experience here so check it out. We’ve got some great infused comfort food recipes to help you enjoy whatever kind of weather might be in your area and reviews of some of the great products we were introduced to at these cool events we’ve been so occupied with as well as articles telling everyone

what’s happening with cannabis from around the world! Some of the great events coming up in the future include our very own Infused Expo, The LA Comic Con, The MAAN Up Veterans Ball and MJ Biz Con Las Vegas. All of us are excited about those to be sure. You can bet we’ll be wearing some sweet costumes at Stan Lee’s LA Comic Con. Meanwhile here in The City of Angels, city lawmakers approved new rules on Monday September 25th to regulate and legitimize the cannabis industry. We’ll see how that goes - no doubt more details will be coming soon. Greg Sestaro’s book “The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside the Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made” has been adapted into a film directed by James Franco and he’s also playing Tommy Wiseau. It’s opening soon and looks amazing. I’ve been obsessed with, "The Room," for a long time, and we’ll be interviewing Philip Haldiman, who played Denny, and reviewing his comic book series “My Big Break” to bring you the full story of what it was like being a big part of such an iconically bad and much beloved film. Remember to tip your delivery driver, smile at your budtender and always know your dose. Medicate well. “Truth is not obliged to stick to possibilities.”

WORLD NEWS
Kingdom of Lesotho Granted Africa’s First Legal Cannabis License Tommy Knowledge
Lesotho is the highaltitude, landlocked kingdom encircled by South Africa, and their Ministry of Health granted the South African medical company, Verve Dynamics, an official license for the legal cultivation of cannabis for medical and scientific purposes, making it the first cannabis production company on the continent of Africa to have been given administrative approval. Cannabis is already the kingdom’s main cash-crop. Right around seventy percent of South Africa’s cannabis is generated in Lesotho, and the continent’s market is growing rapidly. Over 40% of the population of Lesotho lives below the international poverty line of US $1.25 a day. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime conducted a study in 2007 on “Cannabis in Africa”, it showed that an estimated 38.2 million Africans between the ages of 15 and 64 had used cannabis on at least an annual basis, and those numbers have grown exponentially in the last decade. The Lesotho Government is a parliamentary monarchy. The King of Lesotho, Letsie III, serves a largely ceremonial function; he no longer possesses executive authority and he’s basically prohibited from actively participating in political initiatives. The Prime Minister, Tom Thabane, is head of government and has executive authority. Richard Davies, the managing director of Verve Dynamics said in a statement to journalists: “Access to medicinal cannabis on the African continent has taken another major step forward today and Verve Dynamics is honored to be the first company in Africa to have been granted regulatory approval to begin the process of growing and producing high quality cannabis extracts commercially. The Government’s decision to move forward with this historic decision means that Lesotho will play a significant role in developing this industry, both locally and internationally, as well as establishing itself as a pioneer on the African continent with regards to state of the art extraction equipment.” Verve Dynamics is a dedicated Vegan friendly manufacturer of highly purified botanical extracts and specialty ingredients sourced from around the world. Alfred Charles Sharpton Jr. was born on October 3rd, 1954 and is a Baptist minister, television talk show host, American civil rights activist, and a former White House adviser, who 60 Minutes named the "go-to black leader” during President Barack Obama's administration. He’s been accused of being many controversial things, including an FBI informant. Nowadays, he’s a vegan who has joined the cannabis crusade helping to seek justice for the marginalized people who’ve been affected most by the unfair drug laws and the prison industrial complex. While Al does not partake in cannabis recreationally, he believes in the medicinal properties of the plant. Keiko Beatie had the opportunity to interview the enigmatic Reverend Sharpton at The Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo in Los Angeles, and you can read their full conversation right here. Keiko: It’s a pleasure and honor sir. Rev: Thank you. Keiko: I understand what is going on for a lot of people of color and being able to increase the quality of their lives in a positive manner. What do you say to people everywhere about your feelings on Cannabis in the United States?
The other fact is that it has been used in a very negative way, by the criminal justice system. It has interrupted and permanently altered people's lives for what is minor involvement. And I think that we can not afford to be separate and return back to the dark ages of just locking up people and creating criminal
records because they engaged in marijuana. Keiko: And you’re talking about the large amounts of people of color and latinos who are in the prison system right now for just simple non-violent possession? Rev: Simple non-violent possession. Keiko: It’s deplorable. Rev: It is not only deplorable, it’s

Rev: I think that it has been well established that there are many significant health reasons, that cannabis is needed and should not be criminalized. And I think that the United States needs to deal with this in a very mature and reasonable way. One thing about science is science is not against cannabis, it deals in facts. And the fact is that cannabis has proved relief for pain and should be available to those that need it on a legal basis.

TALKIN TOPICALS
ULTRASONICS for Cannabis
Talkin Topicals with Gar Gar Souders, Founder CannaTopics
Hi Gar, I just got back from the emergency room for what they determined to be a severely sprained ankle. It is swollen and already starting to turn purple. The problem is that I play collegiate basketball and want to minimize my downtime. I know that medical cannabis can be beneficial in healing, but what I need is more difficult. I need 1) to be able to test clean after using a product. 2) It cannot affect my thinking or reflexes 3) I don't smoke or vape. If you know of anything that can help aid in my recovery, my teammates and I would be very grateful. Thanks, Sam Los Angeles, CA

Hi Sam, Glad to hear it was only a sprain, and not broken. The problem is that it's still going to cause you a lot of pain and there is going to be swelling and bruising. The good news is that infused topicals can not only reduce the swelling and bruising, but will help with the pain as well. First, by using topicals, cannabinoids do not travel through the bloodstream, so you should be able to pass a simple blood or urine test with no problems. Secondly, infused topicals work with the body's CB2 receptors and do not affect your mental or reflex abilities. You may forget that you used them at all until you realize that the pain is gone. 1:41 PMBy using topicals, there is no need to smoke or vape to relieve your pain, swelling and bruising. In your case, two different products come to mind. The first would be a first aid gel containing a high THC concentration. The second would be a high THC mousse that might penetrate your skin a little more quickly. Ultimately, choose whatever type of product that feels and works best for you. If your local dispensary doesn't carry these products, ask them to get them for you. Dear Gar, I have problems with red, blotchy skin on various parts of my body. Are there topicals out there for this problem? Linda FT. Collins, CO Hi Linda, There are topicals that are made for troubled skin such as yours. Creams containing both THC and CBD are available at your dispensary. Look for a product that has proven to help conditions such as yours. Your budtender may be able to help you select the ones that apply to you. Dear Gar, Can topicals help my age spots? Rochester, NY
Leon
Hi Leon, Topical oils have proven a great way to fade age spots. Find a high THC cannabis oil made with natural ingredients and apply a thin coat daily to the spots. Gar Souders has over a decade of research into the effects & formulations of cannabis infused topicals. He is also a member of several Pro Cannabis organizations. Issue 39 I Page 20

As usual, Shifra Klein’s delicious edibles were a hit. Micro-dosed for safety at just 10mg of THC per item, there is never a trace of that telltale cannabis taste, leaving only delicious melt in your mouth goodness. My favorite was the brownie I designed for them called the Bomb Ass Bamba Brownie made with a chocolate brownie, peanut butter cream, and
crushed Bamba, a popular Israeli peanut crisp snack. Fun fact: Israeli children don’t generally develop peanut allergies and scientists have attributed that fact to the popularity of Bamba with small children, because exposure at a young age is key to protecting against the sensitivity. Edibles List hosted the first ever Ros-HASHanah High HoliDaze Special in the studio with kosher edibles maker Mitzva Herbal Company and me, actress/writer/producer Rakefet Abergel. We covered the meaning of Rosh Hashanah, one of the most holy days of the Jewish calendar. In Hebrew, rosh means “head” and shanah means “year” indicating the Jewish New Year; a time of reflection and celebration that culminates with Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Together the two holidays comprise the High Holy Days. And in this case, “high” has a double meaning! We played a game called “Kosher?” where host Patrick Ian Moore had to guess which animals were kosher to eat and which weren’t. We learned that cute adorable little bunnies are NOT kosher, but chickens, even while wearing sweaters, are! And Patrick even had the right answer to a trick question about caviar, guessing that it would depend on what kind of fish the eggs were from. Alex Klein of Mitzva Herbal blew the Shofar for us; a ram’s horn that Jews sound to call people to prayer. Trippy, right?

Acting and music legend Olivia Newton-John believes Australians deserve easier and more affordable access to medical cannabis. The iconic Australian star of the silver screen originally won the hearts of American audiences playing Sandy in Grease nearly four decades ago and is now battling cancer a second time. The actress first fought breast cancer 25 years ago, and recently revealed to NewsCorp Australia that she medicates with medicinal marijuana on a daily basis to combat the cancer, which came back early in 2017. Newton-John says she will continue to champion the use of the controversial substance in her native country because of the highly beneficial effects she has experienced herself in her own struggles with breast cancer, which has now spread all the way to her to her spine. Newton-John told NewsCorp Australia, "I use medicinal cannabis, which is really important for pain and healing, I will do what I can to encourage it. It's an important part of treatment, and it should be available." Olivia Newton-John said her extreme back pain, caused by the cancer now at the base of her spine, completely disappeared once she began medicating with medical cannabis. The pain was so intense before she began using marijuana, that the 68-year-old actress said she was "limping and walking like a duck and a penguin for a while. I am getting my mobility back to normal all the time, but I have done tests of course to see that things are better, have had my blood work tested, and these things lead me to believe that I am on top of it," she said. Scientific research has proven that cannabis is successful in treating pain. Medical cannabis is legal in Olivia’s adopted home state here in California. The Australian federal government has recently changed the laws to allow medicinal use of cannabis, but obtaining permission to use the herb for medical reasons is still very complicated. Cannabis advocates in Australia are urging the authorities to simplify the process for patients throughout the country. The British-born Aussie performer was first diagnosed with breast cancer 25 years ago and has been active in raising awareness about the disease since then. Advocacy for medical cannabis can now be added to the things she’ll be doing to help those suffering from cancer. Follow Olivia Newton-John on twitter at: @olivianj Issue No. 39 I Page 24

The Good Stuffs Tonics Ginger Apple Kombucha is a very impressive cannabis infused drink, but it's not just a drink. As a lover of cannabis I try to make sure that my entire life is full of healthy smart choices that will positively impact my future, and drinking probiotics is one of them. They are great because I suffer from eczema, and it definitely helps with that. It’s great for digestion, helps prevent urinary tract infections, and improves your
immune system. Who in the world would turn that down? Adding 100mg of THC, and making it taste amazing is just an added bonus to the mix. This drink is also organic and non-GMO for those interested in all natural cannabis infused products, and a little goes a long way with this beverage too. All you need is 1 oz. of it to micro dose on a little over 6 grams of cannabis a day. This low dose is great for beginners and novice alike to see a dramatic difference in digestion. I also love the new packaging, and that it comes in 16oz bottles as well. This really is for those health conscious people out there that understand it matters what you put into your body, and how your body eliminates waste. They also have new lower pricing. Make sure you try this award winning Kombucha as soon as you can.

Mystery Baking Co. Strawberry and Grape Jelly Tanganyika Daniel
I love eating edibles. There I said it. I honestly can’t wait until the day where we have large supermarkets and grocery stores full of cannabis related edibles. Until then I will just have to settle for writing these reviews on unique products like the ones Mystery Baking Company has with their grape and strawberry jelly. I wanted to put it in everything, and I did. I put it in my morning smoothie for an added kick, and I made a sauce with it using honey, teriyaki, and soy sauce. The sweetness reduced the sour tanginess, and after like 45 minutes I was in the best mood ever. Now I put it on Naan bread, sandwiches, and more. I definitely suggest their strawberry jelly, and they have an assortment of other products as well that would be great to add to any adult party. three more times, so my dose should be just over 9 mg. It tastes pretty good, but you can tell immediately that it is strong as the weed taste smacks you in the face, you know this treat is medicated.
I opened it up to a pretty delicious smell during a small writing party and everyone remarked that the room filled with a yummy candy treat aroma. I cut it in half and cut that piece in half
Content, happy, and relaxed. I made my way home, letting the second dose do it’s magic. We will see how I end up sleeping and how relaxed my body feels when I wake up.
Saccharine sweet and chewy, I slowly ate my sliver of the berry crunch treat. It’s not a sophisticated edible, it’s old school junk food with the vibe it was designed for the hungry stoner. It screams munchies, so you do need to be careful about over dosing yourself. I ate it around 8:00 and by 8:25 I was warming and cheering up as well as working on a glass of wine and a plate of cheese. By 9:00 pm I’m feeling mellow and positive; wondering if I want to have one more piece and bump up my dose to just under 20 mg, but I’m going to wait it out like it says for 2 hours. I haven’t wanted to smoke so I know it definitely working on me. By 9:45 I’m not as medicated as I could be so I take the second piece.

Mount Joy Sparkling THC Beverage Patrick Ian Moore
Mountjoy Sparkling Water is a cannabisinfused bubbly THC drink handmade in Sonoma County California with fresh filtered well water and full spectrum cannabis oils. The choices offered in the flavor department are natural, orange and peach. Mountjoy is very refreshing, 100% calorie-free, and contains 12mg of THC in each bottle. Drinks generally can be effective in less than 30 minutes, which is quicker than edibles because they don’t have to be digested the same way.
They also don’t need to be as strong for the very same reasons, so twelve milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol will go further in a beverage like this than it would in something like a high calorie brownie, but it’s still a perfectly modest dose to partake in at any time of day. This cannabis infused drink was delicious and completely hit the spot after smoking some tasty buds. It cured the cottonmouth quick and was fine to keep sipping on afterwards. The wonderful folks at Mountjoy sent us beverages for The Edibles Show on Z420 Television and we’ve been enjoying them on the air with our special guests every Monday afternoon. Each flavor of Mountjoy Sparkling Cannabis water pairs well with all of the comfort food recipes featured in this issue. As every bottle says: refresh, destress, motivate, and elevate your senses. W Vapes Disposable Vaporizer

W Vapes has redesigned their super subtle disposable vape pen and made a few improvements to the product that had already won the prestigious Hempcon award for Best Personal Vaporizer of 2016. Every disposable W Vape pen now contains 500mg of platinum oil ( a whole half gram) extracted from additive-free, single strain, locally-sourced, all-natural cannabis, created through strain-specific, supercritical CO2 extraction. The original terpenes are reintroduced in the post processing ensuring the specific taste and quality you expect. The high is nice, steady and easily maintained with a few more hits whenever needed. They brought some of these beauties onto The Edibles Show on Z420.tv and everybody loved them. I took the Grand Daddy Purple Indica pen home to fully enjoy and was melting into the couch all evening watching documentaries on Netflix. This vaping experience went incredibly well with viewing “Dark Star: H. R. Giger's World”,
the 2014 Swiss film about the surrealist artist behind the creation of the creature in the original “Alien” movie. I highly recommend watching it and pairing it with a W Vapes Indica pen. After that I re-read part of the “Marvel 1602: SpiderMan” graphic novel and thoroughly had a good time doing it before dozing off. The new quartz glass container has a completely clear view so you always know exactly how much product is left in the tank with a secure enforced tip making for no leakage and bigger, better hits. The pen is direct inhale with no button and the “W” illuminates as always whenever you inhale with a battery that is 320mah. It’s an incredibly discreet and effective product ideal for taking anywhere you might be and want to medicate. A variety of strains are available in Indica, Sativa and Hybrid with the lab results posted and available on the W Vapes website. There’s an ancient Chinese proverb that states: “Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are.” Take that to heart and be yourself, and try relaxing with one of these fine little devices. PHARMA-C 420 Pain Stick Review Dr. Sally Burgundy
I deal with trapezius myalgia, which, for me means that the muscles holding my neck, shoulders, and shoulder blades get so tight that they pinch nerves and cause headaches. When it gets really bad, it causes tingling pain and weakness to run down my arms and back. Why did I tell you this? So you know why I use PHARMA-C 420 Pain Stick, and can trust me when I say that it works wonders. The Pain Stick takes the edge off of high levels of pain, and regular use lets me stretch my muscles out more to reduce chronic pain. I was skeptical when I read that “relief usually begins within 5 minutes and can last up to 7 hours,” yet was pleasantly surprised with this powerful 130 mg stick. The effects for me have lasted 1-2 hours at a time, but since it takes effect within minutes, and I can apply it “generously” and “as often as needed,” the length of effectiveness is never a problem.
The Certified Organic/Fair Trade ingredient list is impressive. I’m always trying to cover up the stink with other ointments, but the Pain Stick’s ingredients smell refreshing and relaxing. THC and CBD, blended with other ingredients including Rosemary, Chickweed, St. John’s Wort, Lavender, Chamomile, Marshmallow Root, Lemongrass, and Calendula, create a superstar combination for calming, uplifting mood, alleviating pain, reducing swelling and inflammation, increasing circulation, and softening skin. The Pain Stick allows me to do physical work (lifting and moving) with very little to no pain. My job requires me to be alert and focused, and the Pain Stick keeps my mind clear and my pain low enough to remain engaged and undistracted. I can’t rave about it enough! And don’t just take my word – I have turned friends onto it who use it for problems ranging from osteoarthritis to fibromyalgia to pulled muscles. Check it out for yourself at amazingherbalcreations.com

It is a little greasy, but that is easily forgiven for how well it works. There are ways around greasiness such as wearing
certain clothes or putting my hair up. These very small compromises are trivial compared to the relief of the Pain Stick. (Tip – use it before bed and put a towel down… I fell asleep within minutes without all the tossing and turning that drives my partner nuts!)

WORLD NEWS
Sri Lanka’s First Official Cannabis Plantation
TEXT HERE
Patrick Ian Moore
Sri Lanka is set to launch its first official cannabis plantation to supply the traditional medicine market and also to export the plant to the United States of America, the Sri Lankan Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine said on Wednesday Sept 13th. Rajitha Senaratne is a dentist, politician, Member of Parliament and a well respected cabinet minister. He said the near 100 acre cannabis farm could produce more than 25 tons a year, would be protected by military security and would ensure a regular high quality supply of Sri Lankan cannabis. "Many ayurvedic doctors have complained that they don't get good quality cannabis for their preparations," Mr Senaratne told journalists from the Straits Times. "Good cannabis is a vital ingredient in the preparation of traditional medicine." Senaratne says the traditional herbal medicine market currently depends on handouts from the courts which seize smuggled or illegally grown cannabis. Medical cannabis has technically been legal in Sri Lanka since The Ayurveda Act of 1961. "By the time our native doctors get this cannabis, it is about four to five years old and it has lost its effectiveness," Mr Senaratne said.
Possession, sale, transport, cultivation, using, smoking, or doing anything at all with cannabis is still highly illegal in Sri Lanka and laws are enforced with strict punishments. Going to prison in Sri Lanka for non-violent cannabis related crimes is not uncommon, and many first time offenders are sent to The Welikada Prison. Also known as the Magazine Prison, it is a maximum security prison and is the largest prison in Sri Lanka. It was built in 1841 by the British colonial government, and was home to the Welikada Prison Massacre in 1983 when fifty-three prisoners were killed inside the high-security prison. In November 2012, 27 people died in clashes between inmates and prison guards.

He said the government expected to export the surplus from its proposed farm at Ingiriya, 60 kilometres southeast of Colombo. "I am told there is a high demand in the US and several other countries. Cannabis is used by the pharmaceutical industry in the manufacture of tranquilisers and painkillers." The difficulty in this plan is that exporting cannabis to the United States is still illegal as long as the federal government continues to regulate trade and keeps considering cannabis to be a Schedule I drug.

High Protocol: CannaBDSM at The Folsom Street Fair

Edibles Magazine Issue 39
Every year thousands of local and tourists flock to the streets of San Francisco in their finest leather, latex to celebrate the Folsom Street Fair--the world’s largest celebration of bondage, discipline, sadism, and masochism (often referred to as BDSM, S/M, or kink). The fair is a community gathering in the heart of a city known for innovation, as well as the arts, and LGBT activism, but the activities inside the gates of this street festival would make even Christian Grey himself blush. Adult oriented activities aside, street festivals like the Folsom Street Fair, while visually and socially stimulating, can also take quite a toll on the body, mind, and spirit. Big crowds, hot sun, and concrete can leave a person exhausted and overwhelmed, which can impede one’s desire and bandwidth for kinky play, even when fueled by a seemingly endless supply of over-priced beer. I knew there had to be a better way.
46
This year I teamed up with transgender activist, porn star, and cannabis entrepreneur Buck Angel to create a space nestled right in the heart of the festival that would provide a respite for cannabis users within the chaos of the celebration. Thus, High Protocol was born: a “CannaBDSM” party where people could hydrate, medicate, and even play a little before heading back out into the festival madness. Local cannabis entrepreneurs were invited to showcase their products for attendees, including Oakland Extracts who sponsored a beautiful and educational dab bar throughout the day.
water-based, condom safe THC lubricant and Quim Rock, an intimate oil that both supports vaginal health, and claims to enhance and intensify sensation and climax. Talent Testing, an STI screening service serving the adult film performer population showed up with free condoms and info about safer sex practices, and Buck gave a talk on his new CBD topical products: Buck’s Balm. The THC infused strawberry lemonade was flowing and the pre-rolls were plentiful as Los Angeles based performers Bettie Bondage and Bella Bathory of Femme Domme Fatale took to the stage just after 4:20 to top the day off with heart stopping sideshow burlesque featuring stockings, heels, and power tools. One attendee was heard saying their performance was, by far, the craziest thing he had ever seen at Folsom-but maybe it was just the edibles talking. As the sun set and the fair began to break down, the last remaining guests watched from the safety of their indoor window seating while less fortunate souls scrambled half naked and drunk through the quickly darkening streets. Behind the glass, the vibe was mellow and satiated as we nibbled on CBD chocolates. When the time finally came to lock up and head out in search of burritos, the consensus between attendees and organizers alike was that High Protocol was a grand success. The next installment of kinky cannabis events and entertainment is already in the works. Go to HighProtocolParty.com for updates.

CHEFS OF 420 TEXT HERE
Getting Stoned in San Francisco Two Parties, One Week Darcy Thompson I’ve been working in the Cannabis Industry for four years and I’ve had the privilege to go to my fair share of events. I’ve been to first-time shows that have become the industry standard like Chalice, to events almost a decade old legacy event known as the Emerald Cup, that always have the best weed California has to offer. So when a pretty girl asked me to go to Hempcon, the answer was yes. It was a show friends had been too every year, coming back with with tons of samples but I had just never made it. Known as the bottom of the barrel event, my standards were low.
Edibles Magazine Issue 39
I decided to go on the last day, at the end of the day, to avoid lines. It cost $12 to park, $40 to get in and was cash only. I was like fine, compared to other shows that is still pretty cheap, but paying $52 before you are going to shop, is a chunk of change. This no frills event was inside the Cow Palace. The last time I’d been to that venue was for NorCal High Times, quite the contrast. There was a tiny stage inside, a trickle of people walking around, compared to multiple outdoor stages I’d seen before.
50
A booth in the back asked me if there were more people in the front, but the truth was there was more people in the back, like they wanted to feel the event was better attended and were pooling away from the emptiness by the front door. I was having a good time. The truth is I always try and bring the party and any time there is good weed I’m a happy lady. So I’m walking around dabbing at all the booths that look interesting, getting pretty high, my plan had worked, there weren’t lines. I had brought a few hundred bucks to spend, hoping to get some deals, to find some special strains, like going to the farmer's market instead of the grocery store. I’m cheap, I’m always looking for the deals and we did find them.
Since I’m in the Industry I try and see all the booths at shows if I can, but after an hour or so, I’d spent most of my money. Four to five $5 joints of strains I’d never tried and a few eighths, my favorites were Orange Berry White and Jack Sparrow. I bring a ziplock bag for edible samples, since I get too high if I eat them all at events. I had a few to try but you could get deals as low as $5 for 100 mg bags of gummies. My friend Angie stumbled into a booth that had $30 oz’s of Sour Diesel, that was worth a trip to the atm, since by then I had blown my budget. The best dabs I found were Sour Tangie bho, their deal was three grams for $100. So, went back and bought two of those and a Guava upon recommendation. I was happy to find some hash in the Blue strain family, two grams for $30. That is actually a pretty standard price for hash, the underdog right now of the concentrates out there, for some unknown reason as it is delicious and hits hard. By far the best part of the show was when Dank Dutchess, the genius artisan hash maker from Oakland who plays Mozart to her luscious green cannabis garden on a steel drum, showed up. It had taken us a while to find her and we were content missing the rest of the show, our budgets blown. We found an empty booth to sit where Dutchess began to roll a hash joint fatter than your standard cigar. You hit it the same way and we watched as hardcore cultivators cough and pass the fatty around. I’m feeling pretty good about making it to the party, I’m having fun. So when Bobby Dabs invited us back to their booth to dab, I was stoked. I always like meeting the farmer and trying their goods. We were walking to his booth when security stopped me. “Excuse me, everyone without a vendor pass has to leave now.” I look down at my phone, the time 6:23. I’d only arrived at 3:30, the event listed till 7 pm online, I was shocked to be approached like that. I yelled to my friends who waved me through, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I drove from

Since I work for Ed Rosenthal, an activist with over forty years in the game, he was around before there was an industry. Once the only source of information on Marijuana before the internet, I found out about a private party in San Francisco through Ed’s mail. He had been invited by Jaszmin Hupp, one of the founders of Women Grow, and I thought instantly, I need to go to this party. I asked her for staff tickets and was happy to get the ok from her to crash it free, the tickets listed as $120, far outside my budget. It was Thursday night, a half hour before the end of the party, when I finally arrived at the Clock Tower SF, an 8.5 million dollar suite you can see on the side of the 580. Luckily a nice local that lived in the building let me in and walked me to the right elevator.

I rolled up a Jack Sparrow joint and happily medicated, lounging and taking in this once in a lifetime party. We made our way down the four floors, smoking of course, back to the bottom to grab a CBD mocktail.
It wasn’t till we were there that I realized I was the only one at the party smoking, my first disappointment. I met a women edible maker who gave me some of her chocolates and finished my joint. After chatting up a few people at the party I found many were in tech industry. What Does an Eighth Weigh Anyway?
Patrick Ian Moore
Edibles Magazine Issue 39
What does an eighth of cannabis actually weigh? That’s easy: 3.5 grams, right? Well, let’s take a quick peek into the crazy world of weights, measures, and math. It’s a little more confusing than you might think. There are 453.592 grams in a pound. At 3.5 grams per eighth of an ounce and 16 ounces per pound, that adds up to 448 grams. So where’s the other almost 6 grams go? Stems. Seeds, and samples? Sometimes maybe, but certainly not always. Marijuana arithmetic is peculiar and uses strange quantities not seen in many other products. Like Zac Efron’s character Teddy says in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, “I suck at math. I’m good at weed.” So what’s the explanation? It’s complicated, so I spoke with professional mathematician and comedian George Pete Caleodis and he filled me in on some of the historical details.
52
Let’s start with the fact that one Pound is equal to 7000 Grains. The pound is a unit of mass in imperial and US customary systems. “Grain” is a unit of mass and based on the average mass of a seed of a cereal, barley or wheat. The avoirdupois pound, also known as the wool pound, first came into general use in 1300 AD. It was initially equal to 6992 grains and the pound was divided into 16 ounces. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, the avoirdupois pound was redefined as 7000 grains. Since then, the grain has often been an integral part of the avoirdupois system.
is the founding father of the metric system. He proposed a decimal system of measurement in 1670. Mouton based it on the length of one minute of arc of a great circle of the Earth, or 1852 meters (a nautical mile). However, the metric system wasn’t officially adopted by the French government until 1795. A scientific conference was held in 1798 with representatives from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, and Italy to validate the metric system’s foundation. Most countries use the Metric System, which uses measuring units such as meters and grams and adds prefixes like kilo, milli and centi to count orders of magnitude. In the United States, we use the older Imperial system, where things are measured in feet, inches and pounds. Before the metric system of measurement came into existence, there were a variety of different systems being used, which caused a lot of difficulty in conversion, interfering in international trade and commerce. The metric system is far simpler and seems more efficient than the imperial system of measurement.
Clearly part of the confusion comes from dividing an imperial measurement, the ounce or even pound, into metric units (grams). It’s a problem unique to the United States as well as to the world of cannabis - and those two cultures are pretty set in their ways. No clear solution seems to be on the horizon but it certainly begs the question: What Historians agree that Gabriel Mouton, does your 8th of weed really weigh? Is the vicar of St. Paul’s Church in France, it 54.6875 grains? We may never know. EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

EVENT RECAP TEXT HERE
Putting Disabilites First Last weekend, I spent a day in San Francisco participating in activism at the Dyke March. I appreciated the speeches which spoke about the inclusiveness of the event. Empowevred women taking up space. Radical in many ways, like no corporate sponsorship, this march was organized differently and a noticeable aspect was that it was led by people with disabilities. There was something poignant about it that touched my heart, and I didn’t immediately know why. These women were not afraid; they were celebrating and showing off what others may see as a negative. They were owning up to who they were and there was no shame. I’ll never forget the first time I heard someone praise medicating as an enhancement which blew my mind. Liberal as I am, I’m still fighting against society's brainwashing.
Darcy Thompson
To participate in the current California non-profit system, you must be a medical patient to be on the premises. So if you’re dealing with staff at your local dispensary they must have a medical reason to be using cannabis. They also should have firsthand experience using marijuana to help their ailments and they understand the difference it can make to quality of life. I realized this deeply changed the entire industry and brought a level of compassion that might have not been there otherwise. We put people with disabilities first too. All of this is changing in 2018 where you can legally employ anyone 21 or older in your cannabis businesses. I hope the current industry and all the patients don’t just fade away, I also hope everyone with medical reasons to consume cannabis continue to take up space and be integrated as part of the legal market workforce. Doing business right, being inclusive, and having a diverse staff, is critical to keeping our industry special and different. Let’s hold onto the culture of compassion and caring for the most marginalized who are in need of love and support from our communities. Let’s not lose the soul of the current community and keep celebrating what was once kept hidden. Speak up and keep taking up space and be part of the future...

WORLD NEWS
Canada Now Offers Commercial Cannabis College Certificates, Graduates for 2019 Darcy Thompson
Nagara College, located in an agricultural area in Canada know for it’s wine production, will be the first college program to give a certificate in Cannabis production. Now don’t get to excited, because this school isn’t for everyone like the famed Oaksterdam University in Oakland. You have to already have a degree or diploma in agricultural sciences, horticulture, or a related field to even apply. Responding to the demand for skilled, trained workers that know not only plant pathology but also the strict regulatory requirements rolling out for the legal Canadian cannabis industry. Adding this course onto their two- year greenhouse tech program was a no brainer and students will leave the school with hands on experience. The program is approved by the Ontario Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, it’s like being accredited in the US, it’s going to be a legit course. I think this is awesome. Go Canada. I’ve been wondering when a real college in California was going to realize there is a huge market for information in this multi million dollar industry. According to their website, “There is a tremendous demand for knowledgeable, skilled workers in this highly technical industry,” said Roger Ferrreira, CEO of Beleave, Inc., in Hamilton, ON. “Niagara College having the vision to fill this knowledge gap is commendable.” If you’ve tried to learn to grow your own, you know it isn’t as easy as one may think. There is a lot of science and technique going into it. The few books available now are the foundation of a crop science that is gaining legitimacy as farmers around the world have begun to understand the value of growing marijuana. Can you think of any other crop, any veggie or fruit bringing in $15 / gram retail. When you look at it that way you can imagine the financial loss if a whole batch goes bad. There is a lot on the line to make sure a grow is a success and these students will surely have no trouble getting a job post graduation. Issue 39 I Page 63
