Poetry Night

Meet Karen Waters Karen Waters has been sewing since the 7th grade. She was inspired by her grandmother, a travelling seamstress who would live with one family while sewing clothing for everyone in the household, and then move on to the next family. Karen’s early projects, too, were mainly clothes for herself and others; now she really enjoys craft sewing, including bags and t-shirt quilts for college students.

‘‘

Karen has been teaching sewing for over 20 years. She currently teaches FACS classes at Valley View Middle School in Edina, having previously taught in the Chicagoland area.

I really enjoy watching students as they create their projects and continue to use them for many years,” she says. She and her husband have four children and six grandchildren, and they love to travel, read, take pictures, and mess with technology. —Karen Waters

Preserve a tradition.

Bread for the Senses  In this class, you’ll explore the basic technique for baking white Italian bread. We’ll talk about the origin of bread and its important place in our diet. Instructor Mary DePaulis Brindle learned the basics of baking bread from her Italian grandmother on the Iron Range in Eveleth, Minnesota. Measuring flour by the handful and judging the dough’s readiness by its consistency, she still relies on “the feel” to know what to do with a lump of luscious bread dough. Bring your nose to smell the aroma and your taste buds to enjoy the finished product. You will leave with an artisan, home-made recipe that you can knead, rise, bake and enjoy at home. Mary Brindle

Adorable Spring and Summer Cupcakes  Join the cupcake phenomenon! Grab your friends, family or kids (age 10 or older) and join us to decorate rabbit hole cupcakes featuring a tiny puffy tail and little rabbit feet sticking out of the dirt. We’ll also decorate cupcakes with beautiful sunflowers and tiny lady bugs. Our final design features cupcakes that look like a little BBQ, complete with tiny hot dogs, steaks and kebabs! Please bring one to two dozen pre-baked cupcakes (any flavor), an apron and a container to carry home your decorated cupcakes. Meet Mary Brindle Mary Brindle began baking bread as a child with her Italian grandmother as her guide. Her interest in the tradition was re-kindled when she and her husband Ralph adopted their son Luke in 1984. She currently bakes most of her family’s bread, and also provides baked goodies on order for special occasions.

An Edina resident since 1985, Mary is also a member of the Edina City Council, Edina Morningside Rotary Club, Edina Crime Prevention Fund and the First John Philip Sousa Memorial Band. Mary teaches French Horn at her home.

Food is a wonderful thing! It can break the ice, make celebrations more memorable, draw friends closer, and spark romance! I love sharing and expanding my home cooking skills through Edina Community Ed!

But economic and social realities mean that adult children often feel squeezed between raising children and looking after older parents. The possibility of needing long-term care services—home care, assisted living or skilled nursing care—is real and expensive. Special woodworking project helps young students get a step up on their learning Edina Community Education woodshop member builds walking ladder for students Edina Community Education Services (CES) is an integral part of the Edina Public Schools (EPS) and the broader community. The programs and services offered build skills, promote health and well-being, support families, and expand student achievement. Edina resident Charles Morrill has experienced these factors first hand in his 14 years participating in Edina Community Education programs and recently took on a project that is benefiting special education students at EPS. District Physical Therapist Jan Dahl approached Morrill, president of the Community Education open woodshop, on the idea of building a walking ladder to help special education students during their physical therapy sessions. Within three weeks, Morrill researched the project online and completed the walking ladder, meeting his goal of making the project as inexpensively as possible. As he was putting together the final touches, Morrill said he knew that the paint color had to be fun and durable for the kids, so he selected a powdered milk paint, which is non-toxic, extremely durable, has no odor, and is available in the vibrant colors he knew the children would enjoy.

Now, Oskar and other students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Cornelia use the walking ladder once a week during their physical therapy sessions. Dahl has seen many benefits of incorporating the ladder into the sessions, allowing staff to focus on additional motor skill development.

“The work Charles did on the ladder is beautiful and his thought process all the way down to the type of paint he used showed his loyalty to this project,” Dahl said. “The ladder is a great addition to the students’ physical therapy sessions and has excited many of the students’ parents.”

It is projects like this one as well as the program’s participants that make the CES open woodshop a unique experience, according to Morrill. The program, which offers both morning and evening sessions, has a diverse group of participants. The morning session, which Morrill is a part of, consists mostly of retired men and women, many of whom have been involved in for more than 20 years.

Blake Kelly, mother of Cornelia kindergartener Oskar Kelly (pictured), says that the walking ladder is a preferred method in physical therapy because it

“If we can be helpful towards others and make things of this nature that are appreciated on many different levels, we are happy to do it,” Morrill said.

The mission of Edina Public Schools, working in partnership with the family and the community, is to educate all individuals to be responsible, lifelong learners who possess the skills, knowledge, creativity, sense of self-worth, and ethical values necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing, culturally diverse, global society.
