Gear up for back to school with this fun, theme-based camp that will refresh your reading and math skills during the final weeks of summer. Reading & Math Camp curriculum is based on your students previous grade level with activities geared toward reinforcing reading comprehension, vocabulary and math.

Although most classes run, we reserve the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. We will notify you three business days before the start date if your class has been canceled. Your tuition will be refunded in full. E Late Pick-up Fees. Parents arriving later than 5 minutes after the end of class will be charged $1 per minute. Payment is due at pick-up. E Changes/Cancellations. Cancellations or changes are accepted up to five business days prior to class start. Less than five business days, you will be assessed a $10 fee and any course supply fees and then issued a credit slip for the balance. Cancellations/changes made by phone over the weekend or holidays are received by our office on the next business day and will not be eligible for refunds or credit on classes starting on the day the message was received. Aquatics q Preschool Classes

Meet Kay Zuccaro! Kay Zuccaro has been our Aquatics Supervisor for 15 years, with experience in aquatics for over 25 years in Edina. She graduated from the College of St. Benedict with a degree in early childhood education, and loves kids. Kay is a Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, and teaches water exercise classes. Her mission is to help children and adults feel comfortable in water, build self- esteem and educate them on the importance of water safety. For fun, Kay likes to swim, ski, travel, and cook.

Introduction to Water Skills

 Ages 4+ Children will experience their first swim lesson without a parent. Emphasis is on basic skills, including water adjustment, kicking, beginning underwater exploration and fun. Prerequisite; Must be at least 4 years old.

 Ages 5+ Child will explore elementary skills that can be built upon as they learn to swim. We will work on front and back floating, submerging, and gaining comfort and confidence in the water. Prerequisite: 5 years old or older.

Aquatic Guidelines E Only students on class lists will be allowed into lessons. E Instructors are Red Cross certified. E Red Cross certificates are awarded upon completion of requirements. E Sign up early, swimming classes fill up quickly. E There are no make-ups or refunds for missed classes.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills  Children will practice basic water safety, underwater swimming and swimming while using a combined stroke on front and back. Prerequisite: Passed Level 1 or can float independently on their front and back, and swimming on their front and back using arm and leg actions. Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Stroke Refinement

 Level 3 is one of the most difficult levels to pass, so therefore we have added another class for those students who have been in Level 3 more than 2 sessions. This group will be more experienced than the other level 3 class. We will focus on endurance and refinement of strokes. Prerequisites: Must have taken level 3 for 2 or more sessions, must be totally comfortable in deep water, able to dive, able to do front and back crawl.

 Student will gain endurance by swimming for increased distances, coordinate and refine sidestroke, butterfly and breaststroke and build on water safety skills. Prerequisite: Passed Level 4 or can swim front crawl, back crawl, and elementary backstroke, the start of breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly.

Lifeguard Training  Ages 15+ This class teaches the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course will emphasize victim recognition, surveillance, equipment based rescues, rescue skills, First Aid and CPR. Upon successful completion, students will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate and a CPR For the Professional Rescuer Certificate. Prerequisite: students must be 15 years old on or before the last day of class, swim 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke, and 100 yards breaststroke or front crawl, submerge 7 feet and retrieve a 10 pound brick and swim 20 yards to the shallow end and get out of the pool. Class includes some blended learning which will require a computer with internet access. Supply fee included in tuition. Guardstart  Ages 11-14 This is an exciting new program designed to “prepare” students for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Participants will improve stroke mechanics, endurance, and rescue techniques in the pool. In the classroom, students will develop skills in professional responsibility, communication, and decision making. Prerequisite: Passed Level 4 Red Cross swimming level, ability to swim 25 yards continuously with rotary breathing and ability to tread water for one minute. Further training is required to become a lifeguard. We will focus on Jazz, Tap, Ballet, as well as basic dance vocabulary which helps students and choreographers be on the same page during the rehearsal process. Ballet: Level I

Meet Kyrsten Darby Kyrsten Darby is currently in her third year of teaching 5th grade orchestra in the Edina Public Schools. She travels to all six Edina elementary schools each week, teaching full orchestra and small group sectionals. Mrs. Darby is committed to improving her students as well as her teaching methods and frequently attends music education conferences and clinics. In Edina she has been a leader in technology, creating screencast videos for her students and presenting ways to incorporate ipads into the classroom as an instructional tool and assessment device.

A variety of activities and field trips for Grades 6-9

The Rec Center program offers youth entering grades 6 – 9 a new theme each week and includes daily field trips. Please see the weekly schedule* for details. Program dates are weekdays, June 12 – August 20 (closed July 4 & 5). Youth may register for 1-5 days each week. The Rec Center meets in the cafeteria at South View Middle School and is open from 6:45am - 6:00pm. The bus for the field trips leaves at 10:00am and returns at 3:00pm (unless otherwise noted). There is NOT a stay back option from SURGE field trips. Daily fee is $39 with initial registration and $42/day after initial registration. We recommend that all youth enrolled in the Rec Center have an Edina Pool pass as it is a frequently offered field trip option. If you do not have a pool pass there will be an additional $10 fee for each pool trip.

Club 420 Sailing Camp

 Ages 11-16 The Club 420 sailboat is a 14 ft sporty boat that accommodates three students. This class is intended for the older or more mature student, ages 11-16, both beginner and intermediate. Students will be taught how to rig the boat, land at a dock or buoy, sail all points of sail in varying conditions and more. This has been a very popular course for teenagers. Biking Adventures  Ages 11-14 Join us for a 4-day biking adventure. We leave each day from the Edina Community Center and travel to fun destinations like area bike trails and the lakes while practicing bike safety. Bikers must know directions and be confident in their ability. Due to safety concerns, please make sure your child has a bicycle that is in good working condition and is the correct size. Week 11: August g 19-23 Robotic Engineering  Grades K-3 Working in small teams, students will explore with the PicoCricket Robotic Systems and Legos to build and experiment with robotics while using advanced sensors including light, sound, touch and motion. Developed by MIT Media Lab, the Pico Cricket is a tiny computer that can make things spin, light up, and play music. You can plug in lights, motors, sensors, and other devices, then program them to react, interact, and communicate. This course provides students with a great introduction to programming, engineering and robotics. A variety of activities and field trips for Grades 6-9

August 19, 20 Field Trip: Valley Fair There is no better way to end the summer than with a trip to Valley Fair! Youth will be in groups of four or more. Staff will be stationed in two designated locations within the park to assist groups if needed and to handle mandatory check-in times for each group. Field Trip: Wave Pool Ride the waves at the Wave Pool in Anoka. Tube rentals are available. Enjoy a sand volleyball game, hula-hoop contest, relax under the shade of an umbrella, or visit the snack bar. Bring swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, bag lunch, money to rent a tube and water bottle.

Archery Camp  Grades 4-9 This camp is designed for both beginning and intermediate archers. Participants will use our compound bows and practice from ground level and elevated platforms, then put their new skills to the test on a walk through course. Campers will also learn how to throw spears and study other ancient hunting skills. Program time is about 4 hours per day and the rest of the time is free play, enjoying park facilities and lunch. Campers are bused to Carver Park Reserve Archery Range in Maple Grove. Bus leaves promptly at 9:00 am and returns by 3:30. Meet outside door 3 at the Edina Community Center no later than 8:55 am! Lake Harriet Sailing Camp  Ages 7-17 Campers will have fun learning the basics of sailing including knots, wind, boat rigging, tacking, gybing, and docking. Everyone gets to skipper the boat and trim the sails of a Lido 14 foot sailboat equipped with both a main and a head-sail. Each sailboat will have it’s own coach on board and up to three students. This year, the Countryside Against Hunger Campaign has packed over 70,000 meals and raised over $12,000 to help impoverished youth in third-world countries. • Concord fifth grade teacher, Chris Tower, was recently awarded the National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) Sylvia Shugrue Award for Elementary Teachers. Tower earned the award for his engaging multi-disciplinary science lesson using Concord’s new community garden. • The Edina Education Fund helps support innovation in Edina Public Schools. Driver’s Education Classroom Instruction & Behind the Wheel  Ages 14 yrs 6 mo-18 yrs Flexible Scheduling — Morning, Afternoon & Evening Classroom Instruction Classroom training is 30 hours and is followed by 6 hours of ‘Behind the Wheel’ training, offered at all times of the day. Morning classroom sessions are taught by Barry Becklin, Southview Middle School teacher. Lessons are taught in order, Monday–Friday for two weeks and make-ups are subject to instructor approval. Make-ups for this choice must be scheduled during morning sessions only. Parent meetings are scheduled at 11:00 am the first Tuesday of each session. Afternoon and evening sessions are taught by Safeway Driving School instructors. Each lesson is independent and can be taken in any order. If a lesson is missed, a student can make it up in one of four afternoon and evening sessions this summer. Morning make-ups are not available with this choice. See lesson schedule below. Parent Orientation is available online at www. safewaydrivingschool.com. Behind-the-Wheel Training Lessons consist of six hours of one-on-one private instruction with a responsible, professional driving= instructor. GET OUTSIDE! Edible Schoolyard Enjoy the summer harvest season at the Highlands Produce Garden for a little bit of all things green! We’ll be planting, fertilizing, cultivating, harvesting, composting, and stopping along the way to investigate the diversity of the garden. Resident chef, Stephen Jones, from Salut Restaurant in Edina will stop by to help us harvest and cook our produce.
