Welcome to the new school year! It starts a little earlier, but it ends a little earlier too. We have a lot of great things in store for your family all year long. I am especially excited to unveil our new catalog format for the 2014-2015 School Year! Based on what we’ve heard in the community, we’ve learned that you look for enrichment choices based on where your child attends school. In additon to this, we’ve decided to combine our previous Fall and Winter/Spring catalogs into one full-year resource in attempts to better serve you, our customer. We’re hoping that this change more closely aligns with how your family plans their year, alongside the school district and your childs extra-curricular activities. So hang on to this catalog all year! Pin it to the bulletin board or stick it on the fridge–anywhere where you’ll remember that Edina Community Educaiton is here for you and your family when you’re looking for that something ‘extra’. If you do need an additional catalog throughout the year, stop by our office on Normandale Road, or check out the online version at www. edinaschools.org/communityed. In other news, I’m also excited to share with you a special event on November 21st that we’ve partnered with the Edina Family Center and Adult Enrichment team on, called Salsa & Salsa (see page 43). This “date night” is complete with cooking and dancing, paired with a childcare/activity night for the kids, all under the same roof here at the Edina Community Center! Dust off your dancing shoes and look for an email from us closer to the event. More exciting news to share is that we’ve received a grant from the Minnesota DNR’s “Archery in the Schools” program, to purchase equipment for an after-school Archery Club! Look for more details on our website in early September for this long-anticipated program to launch this fall at South View. As always, we welcome your feedback. We work hard to offer high-quality programming that meets the needs of learners of all ages, stages, abilities and interests. Please call us at (952) 848-3952 to offer your constructive feedback or email comedu@edinaschools.org. We hope to see you soon and hope that your 2014-2015 School Year is off to a fantastic start!

Check out before and after school enrichment opportunities by site! Don’t forget that some classes are only held at the Edina Community Center (ECC) (p. 14). Also, be sure to check out our NonSchool days offerings, starting on page 48.
2
Use this quick reference grid by season (Fall, Winter, Spring) to easily check days, times and prices to see what best fits your families schedule. Class descriptions for each season appear below the quick reference grid, in the order they were listed.

Rows highlighted in orange in the quick reference grid are held at a different location than the ECC.
We have combined our Fall and Winter/Spring catalogs into one, full-year resource to help you plan for before and after school clubs and activities, late start days, no school days, and more. Hang on to it!
You spoke. We listened. We learned that you look for enrichment choices based on where your child attends school. So, we’ve redesigned our catalog with you in mind. Enrichment is now offered by location. If your child attends Highlands, you can now go to the “Highlands” pages and find everything that is available before and after school at Highlands in one place for the entire year. You will also find information about KIDS Club, WISE Guys, and class schedule grids for each season. Don’t forget: some classes are offered only at Edina Community Center, so be sure to check out those pages (14-21) and our Aquatics section (page 9-13) as well. We hope this makes searching and planning for the things you want at your favorite site quicker and easier!
Our commitment to high-quality care and enrichment before school, after school, on school release days and all summer long. Our programming connects, extends, enriches and personalizes school-day learning, keeping our core competencies in mind:

Everything is an invention, even the objects we use on a daily basis. Find out the origins of everyday items like the hand mixer, windshield wipers and conveyor belts and learn to construct them yourself. During this session, students will discuss the difference between an invention and a discovery, learn how inventions solve problems, and find out how inventors get their ideas patented. Each week, students are encouraged to think of what they could invent, or improvements they could make to an existing object to solve a problem. We will introduce your student to the world of ideas, creativity, inventions and patents. Start creating!

countryside kids club Meet Countryside KIDS CLUB Manager, Erica Koller Fully accredited by the Minnesota Afterschool Accreditation Program (MAAP), KIDS Club enriches and extends learning for students in grades K-3 with programming before and after school, on release days, and during the summer. We coordinate with teachers to offer personalized homework support. Our fun-loving and caring staff members help students grow as motivated lifelong learners and well-rounded people with homework support, stimulating clubs and special interest groups, and field trips. Join us every day, or drop in when it fits with your schedule! Learn more: www. edinaschools.org/KIDSCLUB At Countryside KIDS Club, many of our projects and activities focus on growing our students’ global competence, opening their eyes to the world around us. As a part of our program, we have a “Celebration of Culture” program. Every month, we highlight a country for a whole week, and celebrate a Countryside KIDS Club family who is from that country. The family shares photos and stories, and everyone has a chance to ask questions. The kids have really learned a lot about different cultures around the world this way. We have a long history of engaging in service within our KIDS Club program at Countryside. We support our students’ growth as responsible, engaged students by helping them serve our community and reflect on what they have done. In the past, we have organized food drives for the V.E.A.P. food shelf, collected winter coats for different local charities, made winter blankets for a children’s home, made sandwiches for the homeless in Minneapolis, made bookmarks for kids at the Children’s Hospital, and more. Each week we focus on a new social skill with the kids, learning how to communicate and navigate social situations they may encounter. Third graders who have been in our program are able to be leaders and help model and teach the skills to the younger students. We always have a lot of fun and interesting activities going on for the kids to choose from when they are here. Students can choose to participate in a running club, tend the Countryside garden, make structures out of clay, do cooking projects, experiment with science, learn new games in the gym, and much more! Last year the kids even had the chance to meet and talk to Gopher athletes from the University of Minnesota who stopped by to talk about healthy living! Don’t forget: WISE Guys offers out-of-school time programming for students in Grades 4-5. Learn more at www.edinaschools.org/ WISEGuys or see page 7 of this catalog.

NEXT GENERATION | EDINA PUBLIC SCHOOLS EDUCATIONAL COMPETENCIES Edina Public Schools (EPS) has a tradition of excellence that is well documented in Minnesota and across the country. But how do you maintain this legacy given the rapid pace of change happening in the world today? It has often been said that many of the careers today’s students will hold in the future have not even been invented yet, which makes planning and preparing students for success after high school a challenging task.

PROFILE OF A NEXT GEN LEARNER
1) Globally Competent Individual 2) Innovative Thinker and Creator 3) Motivated Lifelong Learner 4) Responsible, Engaged Citizen 5) Effective Communicatior and Collaborator 6) Well-Rounded Person
So instead of thinking only about the specific content students need to learn, EPS is also focusing on key skills and literacies that learners need to be successful in a rapidly changing, global society. As part of its strategic efforts over the last two years, the district has refined these core attributes, or Educational Competencies, into a profile of the Next Generation EPS learner (see below). All district programs and services, including Edina Community Education programs, are committed to providing a variety of opportunities and experiences in which learners of all ages are able acquire these core skills and thrive in a rapidly changing, global society.
STRATEGIC STUDY UPDATES
NEXT GENERATION
BIRTH TO GRADE 5 STUDY Throughout 2013-14, the Birth to Grade 5 Study sought stakeholder input and researched best practices on models of education to advance the district’s strategic goals. In the end, a framework was developed that identified four core strategies and key outcomes. Next year, a team of EPS staff will continue studying ways to refine and implement the core strategies across all district programs in order to promote personalized learning experiences from early childhood through elementary.
SECONDARY ACADEMIC PROGRAM STUDY In June 2013, the School Board approved a framework to advance learning at the secondary level (grades 6-12). Since then, an implementation team has researched action steps to advance the recommendations outlined in the framework. Included in those action steps are several pilot initiatives for 2014-15, as well as future reconfigurations of the district’s secondary program to promote comprehensive middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) experiences that enhance personalized learning opportunities for all students.
As part of the implementation of its Next Generation Strategic Plan, EPS has initiated several studies to help advance the plan’s goals and vision. The Secondary, Birth to Grade 5, Community Education Services, and Facilities Studies, as well as several department strategic planning efforts, all focus on aligning programs and services in ways that promote personalized learning systems for students of all ages. The studies, which are all in various stages of implementation, are looking at innovative ways to first identify the key learning outcomes desired, and then align other resources—such as time, space, talent and funds—to meet those expectations.
