2016 SUMMER REFERENCE GUIDE Haven’t quite figured out what you’re going to do with the kids that week of summer, after your family vacation, but before school starts? This handy and uncomplicated quick reference guide allows you to identify classes and camps available to your child each week of the summer, based on their age. Quickly and conveniently find the perfect activities to ensure your child has a well rounded, fun and memorable experience this summer! See alphabetized class descriptions for details and specific age requirements. Please note: Camps are Monday-Thursday unless otherwise noted. Supervised lunch is available for $5/day each week. Taught by a licensed parent educator, the Edina Family Center offers Individual Parent Education classes for our lifelong learners who are interested in taking their parenting skills to the next level. Worried about cost? Don’t be. We offer this opportunity on a sliding fee scale, based on income. Do you have questions about how to best handle certain scenarios with your child? An enriching pre-school experience to continue the development and enhancement of your child’s learning throughout the summer. The Edina Family Center proudly presents, Book Buddies. Whether your child enjoys art projects, music, games, playing outdoors, or other activities during the summer months, you can find it all and more at Book Buddies! Our “book of the week” sets the stage for what activity we will focus our play and learning on. Over the course of the session, your child will delight in the familiar stories we’re sure they’ve heard at home, as well as discover and explore new and exciting worlds by different authors and illustrators. In collaboration with Edina Public Schools, Kindergarten Camp prepares your already enrolled child for what they can expect as they look forward to their first day of school. The Edina Family Center proudly presents, Kindergarten Camp, a prepatory learning expereince for your already enrolled child, to prepare and excite them for their kindergarten journey ahead. Our licensed staff offers an innovative integrated curriculum of language, literacy, math, science and dramatic play, to prepare your young learner for the next generation. Kids club

Grades 1 3

Fully accredited by the Minnesota Afterschool Accreditation Program (MAAP), KIDS Club enriches and extends learning for students throughout the summer. We offer flexible scheduling so you can join us every day or just now and then. KIDS Club is a caring, fun and enriching place for kids to grow, learn and relax. Learning primarily through play, with the guidance of our caring staff, kids will develop the social skills they need to work well with others, as well as stand up for themselves through a variety of child-led and staff-led activities. KIDS Club kids will also practice healthy habits gaining the necessary information to make healthy life choices. Throughout the summer kids will have the opportunity to explore the Twin Cities through field trips and participate in service and service learning activities. Developmentally-appropriate, choice-based programming is offered before and after school, on release days, and during the summer. The WISE Guys environment, located in the Edina Community Center, includes cozy lounge areas, game rooms, gym and outdoor play areas, and the Homework Zone. WISE Guys is a place for kids to make friends and where adults provide positive role-models for youth. Clubs and activities designed to appeal to a wide variety of learners encourage youth to explore interests and develop skills. SURGE

Grades 6 9

Fully accredited by the Minnesota Afterschool Accreditation Program (MAAP), SURGE enriches learning and grows skills and competencies for students in grades 6-9. Founded in 2001, SURGE is a fully accredited program that offers exciting and enriching programming for youth in grades 6-9. We meet at South View Middle School during the summer. We meet the needs of a wide range of learners with options, activities, clubs and learning spaces ranging from computer labs and media centers to complete homework, structure and unstructured sports activities in gyms, fields and fitness centers, clubs organized around art, science, cooking and service projects, and after-school field trips to nearby parks, ice rinks and restaurants. Ages 8+ Are you ready to start learning to swim? This class is designed for children who are beginner swimmers and 8 years old and older. Level 3 is one of the most difficult levels to pass, so therefore we have added another class for those students who have been in Level 3 more than 2 sessions. Junior Lifeguard

Ages 11-14 This is an exciting new program designed to “prepare” students for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Participants will improve stroke mechanics, endurance, and rescue techniques in the pool. In the classroom, students will develop skills in professional responsibility, communication, and decision making. Prerequisite: Passed Level 4 Red Cross swimming level, ability to swim 25 yards continuously with rotary breathing and ability to tread water for one minute. Lifeguard Training

Ages 15+ This class teaches the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course will emphasize victim recognition, surveillance, equipment based rescues, rescue skills, First Aid and CPR. Upon successful completion, students will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate and a CPR For the Professional Rescuer Certificate. Prerequisite: students must be 15 years old on or before the last day of class, swim 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke, and 100 yards breaststroke or front crawl, submerge 7 feet and retrieve a 10 pound brick and swim 20 yards to the shallow end and get out of the pool. Class includes some blended learning, students will need a computer with internet access. Online Homework (approx. 8 hours) required prior to the start of the class. Supply fee included in tuition. Edina Girl’s Summer Traveling Basketball

Strength Training: Open Gym at ECC

Ages 11-18 Summer Strength Training is a program developed to help improve boy’s and girl’s fitness levels and athletic potential by providing structured and supervised total body strength work-outs in a group setting. All participants are required to complete an equipment orientation that will include assistance in building a training program, how to keep accurate training records and how to use reps with proper form on the equipment. After that, participants will be expected to train independently but trainers are always available for questions and adjustments. In order to achieve optimal effects, students should commit to training at least twice per week with a partner whenever possible. Please note: This program is not intended to be one-on-one personal training. Guidelines for Best Results • Each participant will receive an ID card which will be required to enter the gym. Gym membership and cards are not transferable. Cards will be distributed at the gym during the first two weeks of the session. • Work out anytime between 8:00am - 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. There is a 90 minute limit. • Maximum number of participants allowed in the gym at any one time is 35. • Edina Community Education Services reserves the right to revoke a membership for unsafe behavior. Sail Calhoun: Beginning Optimist

Ages 7-11 Designed for new or less experienced sailors. Students can repeat the course, since we will attempt to group sailors by skill level and advance them accordingly. The 8 ft. Sail Calhoun: Intermediate Optimist

Ages 7-11 This class is designed for students who have taken Beginning Optimist at least once and demonstrated a good comfort level on the water. Students are place one per boat. Introduction to Lego Robotics

Observational Drawings

Grades 2-6 Drawing from observation consists of seeing an object in different perspectives. We will draw items of the artist’s choice (some brought by students) with charcoal, ink, pencil sketch, while learning shadow, cross hatch and reflective light. Artists will also learn art vocabulary and about informative art structures. A favorite animal picture will also be sketched by the young artists from a picture (possibly their pet). Biking Adventures

Ages 11-14 Edina Community Education is partnering with BIkeMN, (Bicycle Alliance of MN) who will provide bicycles and helmets for our use during this 4-day biking adventure. We leave each day from the Edina Community Center and travel to fun destinations like area bike trails and the Lakes while practicing bike safety. Bikers must know directions and be confident and very strong in their ability. We will be biking up to18 miles per day. Grades 4-8 Our focus is on the first LEGO League’s Trash Trek challenge. Students will design, build, program, test and modify multiple robots using the Mindstorms EV3 robotics system. Then use their team’s robot (usually teams of three) to complete various challenges related to recycling and composting. Classroom Instruction and Behind the Wheel Training FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING–MORNINGS, AFTERNOONS AND EVENINGS FOR AGES 14 - 18 YEARS

You may cancel your class registration up to five business days (M-F) before class begins without penalty. Cancellations recieved fewer than five business days before the start of class will be assessed a $10 fee and a credit slip will be issued for the remaining balance. Credit slips do not expire. Edina CES cannot offer refunds or credit slips on or after the first day of class. Participants will be notified if there is a change in the date/location of the class, if the class is canceled or if the class is full. Edina CES confirms registrations via email with participants who share their email addresses with Edina CES.

We ask that you help us by following the guidelines below: · Students enrolled in a camp or class during the summer should be checked in and out of the camp by a parent or caregiver unless otherwise arranged. · If your child will be absent, please contact our office (952-848-3952) and we will notify the instructor. · We request written permission (email is acceptable) from a parent or guardian when a student will be leaving the building on their own. · Please make sure that your emergency contact information is current and that any special needs or allergies are included in your child’s profile.

Weather Refunds are not available due to inclement weather, ie. extreme heat or rain. We provide a back- up indoor location for all outdoor camps and will run the camp indoors as needed.

Prorating We do not prorate classes or camps. Classes are designed to allow enough time to complete course curriculum.

Transportation Transportation between campuses is not available at this time.

Late Pick-Up Parents arriving later than 5 minutes after the end of class will be charged $1 per minute. Payment is due at pick-up.
