WITH

the nearing of a sleek, new, actually working tram system for Edinburgh – after all those years of frustration and disruption – a certain nostalgia seems to have been growing for the clattery old city network, which closed in the mid-Fifties.

“It was a big occasion to go into the city centre. We used to travel by tram into town. It was very exciting when they would break down – they couldn’t just be diverted like buses.” Nicely illustrating this is the recent sale of a former Broughton Street sign for the Edinburgh “tramways parcel express” at a Shapes auction for £350. Older people talk affectionately about yesterday’s trams, such as Dennis McCrone recalling his work on

that service as a teenager sitting behind the driver in the 1930s: “A peaked cap with the word ‘parcels’ on the brim was placed on my head… My large white bag was loaded with 14 parcels for dropping off en route. Back at the depot, having made one shilling and two pence, I was set for my next round.” One-time passenger Maggie MacDonald, from Leith, remembers: “It was a big occasion to go into the city centre. We used to travel by tram into town. It was very exciting when they would break down – they couldn’t just be diverted like buses.”

“A peaked cap with the word ‘parcels’ on the brim was placed on my head… My large white bag was loaded with 14 parcels for dropping off en route. Back at the depot, having made one shilling and two pence, I was set for my next round.” Yes, the old trams could be unreliable and dirty, with those passengers who wore white finding their clothes almost black on alighting; bike tyres could get dangerously stuck in the tracks that criss-crossed the city; the trams couldn’t drive nimbly around errant pedestrians; and there was not much obvious grieving when the decision was finally taken to abandon the noisy double-deck machines in favour of buses. Except perhaps at the very moment the last trams hit the road.

journey These days there’s a certain celebration of surviving staff from the old system – such as one-time driver Charlie Young, interviewed about the new one (see You Tube) after a visit with other enthusiasts to the Gogar control centre – “I was really impressed” Tram Enthusiasts visit Edinburgh’s Tram Project

Then a large crowd watched as the final three – including a colourfully decorated one and a restored horsebox – made their way to a ceremony at the Foot of the Mound on the evening of Friday, 16 November. 1956. With farewells said, the carriages set off on their final journey to Shrubhill depot, and there were not many dry eyes among the crowds of onlookers watching from Princes Street, St Andrew Square, York Place and Leith Walk. So was that the end of the story? Not quite, it seems… These days there’s a certain celebration of surviving staff from the old system – such as one-time driver Charlie Young, interviewed about the new one (see You Tube) after a visit with other enthusiasts to the Gogar control centre – “I was really impressed” – while supermarkets display nostalgic black-and-white tram pictures on their walls, bookshops feature the Fabulous Fifties, tram veterans are entertained at the city’s Council Chambers, and other enthusiasts mount expeditions to Derbyshire. Why Derbyshire? That’s where another notable survivor of the old era can be found – tram No 35. Apart from its many years in

Edinburgh service, this 62-seater streetcar, built in 1948, operated in Blackpool and at Glasgow Garden Festival before being taken in 2008 under the caring wing of the National Tramway Museum at Crich, 200-plus miles south of its original depot.

“It needs quite a lot of work to get it up and running, but the people of Edinburgh can rest assured we are looking after this precious vehicle very well.” “Edinburgh 35 is non-operational at the moment,” says the museum’s Laura Waters, “but visitors can see it in the museum depots where they are able to walk in among the trams. It needs quite a lot of work to get it up and running, but the people of Edinburgh can rest assured we are looking after this precious vehicle very well.”

‘Let Glasgow Flourish’… in Edinburgh? GLASGOW’S coat of arms on a high spot in Edinburgh? Knowing the traditional rivalry between Scotland’s two main cities, clued-up tourists on open-top buses passing at eye level the stone-sculpted wall panel’s exhortation to “Let Glasgow Flourish” must be very puzzled… Why should there be such a ancient-looking acknowledgment of that other auld enemy

holding such a prominent place on the western side of the Grassmarket, 15 feet above the main window of Helio’s Fountain gift and craft shop? Answer? A little research establishes that the crest – featuring a symbols and emblems associated with the life of Glasgow’s patron saint, Mungo – is located atop what was once a branch of the (then) an outwardly-thrusting Glasgow Savings Bank.

IT’S not hard to imagine how crowded these impressive steps are going to get on match days! This sweeping, Graham-built approach from the (forthcoming) tram service to the hallowed gates of Murrayfield rugby stadium has recently appeared virtually finished in all its glory, like a section of some ancient Roman amphitheatre. And there’s a fighting chance it will bear witness to some similar passion…

Just the job

...continued from front page

For the uninitiated, ROAV stands for Remotely Operated Aerial Vehicle and UAS for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. But the company would also be interested to hear from candidates with good computer skills, video or photograph editing skills, report preparation skills, and a full driving licence – and model helicopter flying experience. Cyberhawk… the name instantly intrigues. With its touch of 007 glamour, adventure and futuristic hi-tech spec, it might seem ultra-space-age – developing, supplying and operating metre-long machines that are part-helicopter, part-dragonfly and part-hawk – but it represents a very practical solution for a growing fanbase of international corporate clients. They are impressed, above all, by the idea’s key ability to remove workplace mortal danger to humans. Only five years old, the firm is already a global player in its field, using the tiny ROAVs that can carry video equipment, still and thermal imaging cameras and emission sensors. Based on European units designed for aerial photography – but with sophisticated front-end technology developed here – the flying machines can safely perform otherwise-risky inspections of high objects

like wind turbine blades, flare stacks, industrial chimneys, and cooling towers “whether live or shut down”. The talents of the feather-light machine has attracted some impressive clients, such as ExxonMobil, Shell and INEOS of Cologne, whose operations manager Dr Christoph Breitkopf said of it: “The drone enabled us to inspect the flare safely and efficiently while it was still in operation.”

“Putting up scaffolding is expensive, so we brought in Cyberhawk, which meant the survey took place in hours rather than days.” It even makes archaeology easier. A recent task was to survey the 15th-century Stirling Bridge; to photograph and assess what repair work was needed to satisfy Tom Gaze, Stirling district architect for Historic Scotland, who said: “Putting up scaffolding is expensive, so we brought in Cyberhawk, which meant the survey took place in hours rather than days.”

The inspiration for Cyberhawk came from managing director Malcolm Connolly who, as a former oil and gas man with memories of risking his life in “rope access” exercises (often abseiling), resolved to find a better way of servicing hard-to-reach parts of big structures. Help! There’s WHAT a bird nest in my chimney

does a chimney sweep do when the days get warmer and people are lighting their fires less and less? It seems that about half of their working time is taken up with clearing birds’ nests from the flues, as twigs either block them or tumble from them into people’s sitting rooms. That’s the case at least for the sweepers of Auld Reekie, the oldest established such family business in Edinburgh, headed by Kirk McLenaghan. “It’s a sensitive business,” says the 43-year-old boss, who has followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. “In the olden days when the coal fire was so central to home life my granddad would just throw down the sweeping balls and worry more about the clients’ comfort than the birds, but these days we have to be very aware of the welfare of our feathered friends.” In what way? “Well, we look down first to see if there are any eggs in the nest and, if so, we can’t proceed. The RSPB, neighbours or police wouldn’t let us and neither would the seagulls – which can be pretty aggressive and always keen to have a go at you even when you’re just looking.” What of other birds? “Well, the jackdaws are not too bad; but we have even had to deal with owls, who sometimes like to roost in the chimneys.” Bird-lovers will also be relieved to know that, if Kirk and his crew do find eggs, they are obliged to wait until they hatch and the little ones fly the nest. “That’s just too bad for the customer, I’m afraid, as they then have to do without heating – whether we’re talking coal or gas – for up to eight weeks.” Some birds might not even start building nests until they have dropped down enough twigs that might make a foundation – and in the meantime, whether there is or isn’t, a fire-risk jungle might have been created. The age-old business of chimney sweeping has changed radically in the last half-century of course, with the advent of all kinds of alternative heating systems to coal fires. But – apart from clearing bird nests – Auld Reekie, based in the city’s Ardmillan Terrace, responds to a wider set of challenges – such as erosion, relining, smoke testing, and cowl-fitting to beat dampness. Not forgetting, of course, the lums that are still sooty. “Lang may they reek,” says Kirk, who has also plied his trade in Australia and New Zealand.

New medical centre gets started next to cathedral WORK has begun on the £2.6million reconception of a sensitive part of Edinburgh’s west end – sensitive because it centres on the erstwhile grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral, the Scottish Episcopal Church with its two sky-high towers and elaborate arched doorway on Palmerston Place.

The ground in question is on the opposite side of that entrance – on Manor Place – and the planned building, while modern, is designed to be in visual harmony with the soaring Victorian architecture of the impressive A-listed cathedral, the biggest in Scotland, whose foundation stone was laid in 1874 before being consecrated in 1879. Neighbours are

taking comfort in the idea that, as the new building will be a medical centre, “the area will now be devoted to both body and soul”, according to one. Locals have also generally accepted that the long, low design is quietly stylish and as sympathetic to the architectural context as could have been expected from a contemporary pen.

“The design is based on a holistic approach to health care with a reduction in corridor space and an organic shaped waiting room area that responds to the garden and existing trees.”

firm, CCG (Scotland) Ltd, and is scheduled to be completed within a year, when it will then reaccommodate the group of doctors’ surgeries currently housed in a Georgian corner house at nearby Chester Street. To be known as St Mary’s West End Medical Practice and featuring improved disabled access, the new centre will incorporate the existing Walpole Hall, and a newbuild pavilion with GP and treatment rooms. West-enders keen to see a local element in the construction can appreciate the fact that an Edinburgh company, J. Sives Surfacing Ltd., has been commissioned to simultaneously landscape the church’s one-time “raw” playground adjacent to Palmerston Place, on the other side of Walpole Hall. And handsomely it is doing so, too…

That pen belonged Page/Park Architects in Glasgow, which says: “The design is based on a holistic approach to health care with a reduction in corridor space and an organic shaped waiting room area that responds to the garden and existing trees.” The project director is Karen Pickering. Construction is also being executed by a Glasgow

In and out in 5 minutes. Jiuding!!

You’ve got to love a place that calls itself Coffee Angel, and so it is with Coffee Angel in Edinburgh’s New Town. The coffee is excellent, there’s a good range of cakes and it also has some food options. What I liked best about Coffee Angel is the look and feel of the place; it’s definitely somewhere you could linger the whole afternoon and the friendly and helpful staff don’t look as if they’d mind.

This little chinese takeaway is hidden away off Leith Walk. It was a pleasant, easy and quick experience. We put our order of Mongolia beef and Special Chow mein in 10 minutes before we got there. When we arrived the atmosphere is very fast paced, it is a busy little takeaway, with the phone ringing, kitchen in full operation and customers shouting their orders in. We walked in picked up our meal and that was that. Nothing spectacularly, but very pleasant nonetheless. The food was lovely and ticked all the boxes for me, it was tasty, full of lovely ingredients. It hit the spot. If you are rushing home, and looking to pick up a cheap tasty meal, this is the place for you. Let the staff in Jiuding take care of you. Try the salted chilli chicken, it is also a really big seller and a customer favourite. 30 Albert Street, Edinburgh EH7 5LG

It’s got free wifi and an excellent range of seating: sofas for lounging, tables for working, bar stools for perching and outside seating for that rare thing in Scotland, a sunny day! I really, really loved the place. The only downside I could see was that there weren’t any power sockets for my laptop.

other places. It is an extremely popular chip shop and now I can see why. Everything from the box your food is served in, the bag it arrives in, all the staff in uniform, you can tell that this is a very serious business for the owners and they take a lot of pride in what they do. Generous portions and value for money. I wasn’t hungry afterwards anyway, well fed, yum.

Phuket Pavillion Thai Resturant Reviews Simply Fantastic!!! I ate here recently with my partner, and I honestly cannot put it into words how stunning this meal was. What I write here will really not do it any justice, you need to go along for yourself and try it out. The mixed starter we had was delicious, it had prawns, chicken satay, beautiful fish cakes, it was simply fantastic. For main course we had a Thai Green Curry and The Weeping Tiger, it came out and it was a sizzling hot plate of beef in a Thai Whiskey sauce. I have never seen or tasted anything as mouth watering as The Weeping Tiger. You need to try it for yourself!! You will be blown away. The front of house and business owner is a warm welcoming character, which rubs off on all his staff, it truly is a lovely place to dine. Eating here again is inevitable. 8 Union St. Edinburgh, EH1 3LU 0131 556 4323 www.phuket-pavilion.co.uk

Reviews Love this place. I had special fish & chips which i thoroughly enjoyed and my partner had the chicken shawarma which was devoured in 2 minutes!! We have ordered here regularly now for many months and it continually meets the high standards of food, service and customer service we have come to expect.

...their special fish and chips are a MUST I have sampled many of the items on the menu, but it says it in the name FISH BAR, their special fish and chips are a MUST. Everything is always hot and fresh out of the fryer. Although the burgers are quite something as well, trust me when I say you will not be hungry afterwards, the portions are fairly large.

The customer service is lovely and I have now ordered so regularly, the staff all remember my name and address, there is always a laugh and a joke when I order something other than Fish and Chips.

The customer service is lovely and I have now ordered so regularly, the staff all remember my name and address, there is always a laugh and a joke when I order something other than Fish and Chips. I love these guys. Valletta Fish Bar has been my chip shop of choice for the past 6 months, and I can’t see it changing any time soon. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. If you have been thinking of trying somewhere different, then make Valletta your new local chip shop. You will not be disappointed. 25-27 Brougham Street West End, Edinburgh EH3 9JT

Kebab Express Kebab shop takeaway Reviews We really enjoyed the mixed grill meat here. perfect indian corner to eat tasty, juicy, tender and spicy charcoal meat. 10/10. Portion was VERY generous and prices quite reasonable for what you were getting. The best kebabs in the UK, they use lovely fluffly soft naan breads rather than the dry hard pitta breads & the condiments that go in the kebab are much better than your run of the mill kebab shops. 252 Gorgie Rd Edinburgh EH11 2PL 0131 337 9070

Khublai Khan Mongolian restaurant Reviews I had heard a lot of great reports about Khublai Khan, and as it has two branches one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh, I thought well this must be good to be trading successfully in two cities. The attraction for me, was all the exotic meats on offer ( horse, zebra, camel, wild boar etc ) You get to choose any starter from the menu. I chose the honey bbq chicken wings, which were extremely flavoursome. Everything from the side salad and dressing is cooked and prepared with highest quality of ingredients, the fresh salad was dressed with a beautifully sweet sauce. I everything on the plate. NOW the fun begins, you get to become a chef for the evening. There is a variety of fresh veg, sauces, spices, oils and most importantly meats. You will each pay £20.95 Sunday – Friday but £21.95 on a Saturday in return for a small red token. When you have picked all your ingredients ( I chose kangaroo, cumin, turmeric, rice, asparagus, onions, garlic oil Thai sauce), you bring the bowl up to the chef, who cooks it on the open grill for everyone to see. Don’t forget to bring your red token. It is a truly astonishing experience. Once you are done, go back and do it all over again. Don’t worry, you do not have to be the best cook in the world, there is a chart that give you guidance as to what ingredients go well with each meat. But the experience is about having fun, tasting all the exotic meats, interacting with the food and creating a memorable dining experience. There is nowhere else like it. I had such a great evening. It is not a place I would go to every week, but for something that little bit different, then this is the place to go. Go on try something different for a change! 43 Assembly St. Edinburgh EH6 7BQ 0131 555 0005 www.khublaikhan-edinburgh.co.uk

El Quijote Spanish Tapas El Quijote is one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. The food is truly authentic and my favourites are the Salmorejo as starter (a chilled tomato soup with garlic egg and iberico ham on top, my mouth is watering thinking about the explosion of flavours!) and Presa Iberico which is strips of pork cooked in delicious olive oil and black pepper and salt, I love it! The music in the background is real traditional Spanish music, the atmosphere is very relaxing and the ambience again truly Spanish. If you sit with your back to the window overlooking the street you could almost be in a little hidden bar in the heart of Seville or Granada! I have and will be back again! The combination of simplicity, intimacy and authenticity create a uniquely magical dining experience. Cafe Piccante A.K.A. ‘The Disco Chippy’

Gourmet Grub Breakfast & brunch · Sandwich Shop • Burger restaurant Reviews This little gem looks nothing from the outside, but from the minute we walked in the door we were made to feel welcome. Breakfast menu was extensive and varied and the food itself was freshly cooked to order, well presented, the drinks were hot (take note Mr Costa) and served by a waitress who just couldn’t do enough for us. Once again a small independent establishment outshines a franchise outlet - by a long way! During our 4 night break in Edinburgh we went to Gourmet Grub twice for breakfast. First time we both had the scottish full cooked breakfast which was really nice, good quality food, and much better quality than our hotel breakfast. Second visit we both had omlet, which were both delicious. Good service too, well recommended. 71 Rose St Edinburgh 0131 225 8012 Open 7 days. Family owned, family run!

Reviews This place is definitely unique and the coolest chip shop in Edinburgh! With a live DJ playing the decks on Friday and Saturday nights this place is happening! It is also open very late and has an alcohol license so you can sit and enjoy a beer with your fish supper whilst listening to the funky beats.

Flip Healthy Fast Food

The best thing about this place other than the shiny disco ball?

The best thing about this place other than the shiny disco ball? They sell deep fried chocolate?!?!?! Now wait, don’t diss it until you’ve tried it because believe me it is tasty!!! Great fun for tourists and I think it should be a law for all Scots to have at least tried one. Cafe piccante is about creating an experience for the locals, whilst maintaining a high standard of food. You can even get your picture taken and put up on the wall. It is just another unique addittion to the overall experience, it can be used to capture special moments with friends and family.

Reviews Flipping Friendly!

This place is open ‘till stupidoclock at weekends. Late the rest of the week. Good pizzas & easily one the best fresh fish & chips you’ll taste in Edinburgh. DJ plays the decks at weekends. Half a dozen tables.Love it. This place is about creating an experience as well as enjoying great food. Get your picture taken at the weekends when the decks are on, to capture those special moments.

This is the friendliest takeaway in Edinburgh. The price range is between £1 - £5, from which you can get a range of soups, salads, wraps and sandwiches. The service is second to none, Mr. Flip has a laugh and a joke with all his customers, which makes the whole atmosphere of the shop very homely. It serves healthy fast food, that you can either sit in or takeaway, so it if is a salad, soup or a wrap you after, then go see Mr. Flip. I would recommend the Burrito or one of the Fajitas. They are made with a lot of love, ingredients and of course Mr. Flip! You can be in and out within 5 minutes with a healthy delicious meal, and most importantly smile on your face. 11am-6pm 54 Clerk Street 0131 667 2727 flipfun.co.uk

This is my new favourite curry house. The food was varied in flavour and delicately spiced, particularly the vegi dishes which were excellent. My husband had the tandoori mix grill & loved it. We are keen on Indian food and I have to say this curry house was up there with the best I have tasted. The smell alone could tell you everything you needed to know, that it was a freshly home cooked curry. It is everything that you want from a curry house. Great flavours, great selection, the meal deals are something that I would recommend to anyone. Great price too.

Trying this takeaway for the first time and sampled what they had to offer in the chip shop and pizza range. The delivery time and service were excellent - the food was delivered earlier than expected... especially given it was a Saturday night, when other takeaways sometimes struggle. The thing about Edinburgh chip shops which are always a big let-down are the chips - on this occasion the chips were far better than the other Edinburgh chip shops I´ve used, especially those available to be in Morningside - and the items to go with the chips were perfect too. The kids meal portion was generous - and because the chips were so much better than other local chippies I will probably be ordering any chippies from here in the future. The pizza was pretty good too - the toppings were good and the dough was delicious. Overall then - a great place to order chip shop items from (they have a wide range of other things on the menu that I haven´t tried - like pastas, wraps, burgers etc) and if you´re passing or already ordering a chippy then the pizza is worth a try as well. I like how they have a wide ranging menu and they also include the little items that other places forget to put on their menus like buttered rolls, dips etc - I also enjoyed my generous slice of chocolate truffle cheesecake, well worth trying. They also have some good deals - like any 4 suppers for £13 (with some exclusions like fish and chicken) - so an affordable chippy for a family and they really do have nice chips that aren´t greasy and are soft and fluffy in the centre. Sorry for the longest review in history. 54A Clerk Street, Edinburgh EH6 9JB 0131 667 97 58 / 0131 667 83 83 www.papponitakeaway.co.uk

Fast, friendly and efficient service. The order was ready for collection promptly after I phoned. The food arrived hot and I loved the bag it was delivered in. PreTheatre Downtime Chop Chop Chinese restaurant

Reviews A colleague and I were looking for food after watching the rugby and stumbled on Chop Chop at 5pm on a Sunday (Mothering Sunday to be exact). We had walked past earlier and seen how busy the place was for a Sunday Lunchtime and thought it must be worth a visit - it was! I have travelled a lot, especially in Asia, and found the food here to be really, really, good. The “all you can eat” buffet for two was great value at £20 each, with each dish complementing the others; from a really fresh cucumber salad to beautifully steamed Pork and Coriander dumplings. If I am honest it is difficult for a Chinese restaurant to stand out from the crowd, with most selling very similar food - but Chop Chop is definitely a cut-above. Haymarket

Bar Frizzante is an extremely well priced Italian Restaurant. It is a perfect setting for a meal after the theatre. The service is second to none, starting with the front of house right through to the chefs in the kitchen. After hopefully enjoying a pleasant evening the theatre, relaxing, then come to Bar Frizzante and they will take care of you by serving up a delicious traditional Italian meal and putting a smile on your face whilst you dine, the staff couldn’t do enough.

The passion is there for all to see, it is a family run restaurant and every effort was put into making our evening very pleasant. The father in particular is such a charming character ( and fantastic chef ), the food was fantastic for the price you pay. The mussels we got with our pasta where particularly tasty. Everything we got had a large portion, more than enough to cure my hunger. The house wine was excellent and gave the meal and evening in general the perfect touch. Italians know how to create the perfect dining experience. 95 Lothian Road, Edinburgh EH3 9AW www.barfrizzante.co.uk

Taken my mum here a few times as she is a fan of spicy food, the buisness lunch deal is a great offer, I think between 12 and 2pm mon-fri so grab that if you can,i just stick to the Chicken Korma, the deal comes with rice or naan we just choose one of each and share (the naan bread is huge and tasty) and think you get ice cream or a hot drink with the deal too (forgot you get a starter too which i cant remember the options now ) the staff are attentive and have been with babies/young children they have sufficient facilities for buggies high chairs strange requests etc,my mum will just choose whatever the spiciest dish is and has never complained so i think if you are looking for a quick and cheap lunch, it is worth a try.

Under new management, this little sandwich shop on Lothian Road now has the passion, staff and most importantly the food to make it a really big success. They will be offering outside catering services, and with the new manager on this side of the business, it surely will take off. If you know anyone looking for catering services. Give La Baguette a call.

Absolutely Fabulous! Bonsai is a traditional Japenese style Restaurant. Although it is small, the quality of food is excellent and the portions are more than reasonable - I am left leaving the restaurant full for the rest of the day and into the next morning. I love their menu and full marks to them for listing everything that is vegetarian! Be sure to book a table, this is a busy little place. But it is definitely worth it!! They cater to everyone’s needs, nothing is off the menu. We had one person in our company who had severe food allergies. The waiter, the chef and all the staff made an effort and went out of their way to make their evening very enjoyable. I have no complaints. Gaijin Zushi - Large inside out Sushi Rolls Try one with soft shell crab. It is stunning. It comes with beautifully fresh avocado and black tabiko. Yummy Tori Japanese restaurant

Reviews YummyTori is a fantastic Japanese restaurant located on Lothian Road. My friend and I went for a meal recently and it was absolutely fantastic. We were given the cabbage and special miso dip as a complementary appetizer and it was very tasty. I ordered the prawn tempura which was covered in the most delightful crispy batter, the white fish inside was delicious and the dip really complimented the dish. I also had the katsu chicken, the deep fried crispy chicken was full of flavor and was presented on a lovely bed of cabbage. As a side dish we shared the garlic fried rice, this was bursting with flavor and went really well with the dishes we had. My friend had the teriyaki chicken and she said the chicken was soft and had a tasty tangy sauce and vegetables. She also had the katsu chicken, this is one the most popular dishes in YummyTori and I can see why! We also ordered the YummyTori salad, it was fresh and had a very refreshing dressing drizzled over the top, it went well with the other dishes. For dessert

we had the banana tempura and the mango sorbet. The sorbet was so refreshing and full of fruity flavor The banana tempura was delightful, fresh fruit in a light crispy batter, something I had never tried before; it was extremely enjoyable. I would recommend that everyone try the food in YummyTori, it was an authentic Japanese experience, suitable for families that want to enjoy a relaxed meal in a friendly environment, ideal for young professionals looking for a quick tasty lunch, perfect for large groups seeking good food and good fun. The staff are friendly and efficient and the kitchen is completely transparent so you can watch the chef at work while you dine. They have a wide range of drinks too, suitable for anyone who wants to try something new or different from the bar!

Never fails to please. Fantastic staff led by manager Giri Bimal.. Really good service and dishes quite different (in a better way) than most Indian food... I call it healthy indian! Nothing is too much trouble and there is a wide variety on the menu.. I take people there time and time again and they all rave about it, often returning with other people. There again with party of 8 next Tuesday. Can’t wait! 8 W Maitland St, Edinburgh EH12 5DS 0131 228 2085 www.thekhukuri.co.uk

Arrivederci, Roma. THE rumours have been on and off for months, but now it appears to be true – Bar Roma, one of Edinburgh’s most popular family restaurants since its establishment in 1981, is set to close in September. Owner Mario Cugini, 68, initially blamed the sparking of the rumours on the decision to close on Mondays – “only because my wife and I wanted to spend more time on the golf course”. However, it seems there’s more of a future for them in golf than pasta experiences…

Light bright & girly, great worn with pastels, this is often a whimsical look for summer, which for spring has a cooler palette. Of course florals don’t always have to be worn on the outside; you could start the foundations of your outfit with a fabulous pair of knickers. High end and private designers are utilising to great advantage varying forms of leather. Only last year Makki (a firm favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge) was offering a Carp & Eelskin Combo Clutch. Soft and supple or scaly and hard one thing is for sure, they are definite high impact pieces.

Dress accordingly and please, please.. No all white combo’s just yet.. Frankly if at all.

Eelskin Satchel @ Lilies & Dreams Remember more than anything however, Spring fashion is just that, it occurs in Spring! It might be bright and sunny, but there’s still an occasional chill in the air. Dress accordingly and please, please.. No all white combo’s just yet.. Frankly if at all. But let’s maybe readdress that conundrum if we ever do hit over 10 Degrees? Hello.

My name is Nasreen, I own a beauty salon called Ooh Laa Laa Beauty in Gorgie Road., Edinburgh. We have been opened since 21st June 2012. In Ooh Laa Laa Beauty we offer the latest nail treatments and beauty services using world leading Brands such as CND and Eve Taylor (OBE) Aromatherapy Skin and Body Products and many more. It is run by myself and my daughter Maariya, who is 19 years old also studying Interior Design HND at Edinburgh

A little sweetie This little gem of a shop is a trip down memory lane, brimming with a nostalgic selection of sweets. All the sweets are weighed out in a traditional style. Located on Leith Walk, one of the longest streets in Edinburgh, you are sure to find something to your taste. It stocks many of the old classics we thought had disappeared forever. Sweets such as clove rocks, melt in your mouth Berwick Cookies and the everlasting strawberry Bon Bon’s.

All the sweets are weighed out in a traditional style. Why tell someone you love them with a delightful little Gift Box of their old favourites.

College. Maariya is very creative and passionate in what she does. Always happy to make the clients relaxed and comfortable whilst getting their nail treatments done. She will advise you to suit your needs. Depending on your lifestyle Maariya will assist you with what type of nails enhancements suits you best taking in consideration your work ethics, lifestyle or if you are work at home mum. I have always been passionate about making my family and friends looking their best from a very young age. Wheth-

er, it was a party, wedding or a very special occasion, I was always on hand to help them with their makeup and beauty treatments. I used my creative skills always keeping up with the latest beauty trends. I then decided to travel to Dubai, during my stay there I visited many beauty salons. I was very inspired with the beauty treatments on offer. This encouraged me to take this further, after completing my Beauty Diploma I started doing freelance work, unfortunately due to an injury I had to take time out from this industry, being a single mother of two I had to do something. Being creative I did a course on Creative Multimedia and Arts HND where I had to design a website and I chose to do a fashion and beauty and called it Ooh Laa Laa Beauty this is where I came up with the name as for me this name represents beauty and I guess it stuck. After trying

hard to look for work in Scotland, I then decided to go back to the Beauty Industry. I want my clients to experience something different and exotic. My spa body treatment Arabian Golden Nights consists using the finest Rasul salts to exfoliate the body followed by a Luxurious Gold Body wrap (CONTAINS champagne and caviar) and to complete the ritual choose either the Gold Body Oil or the famous Moroccan Argan Oil. Once treatment is completed to continue with the Middle Eastern experience you will be offered tea and Baklava (Middle Eastern pastry) My aim is to grow Ooh Laa Laa Beauty make any imperfections perfect we take on board our clients suggestions too. I want to make my clients feel that they can sit down and talk to me about anything. We will do our best to make you feel comfortable and relaxed as we are here for you and that’s a promise.

Poor nutrition... 1 2

3 4 5

6

All food is made up of building blocks of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and a certain amount of water and fibre. Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram, this does not matter if it is simple sugars in the form of fruit, or if it is complex carbohydrates like pasta. They both contain 4 calories per gram. Fats contain 9 calories per gram, again this does not matter if it is saturated fats or GOOD healthy fats such as Omega-3 fish oils.

7

8

Proteins also contain 4 calories per gram. Carbohydrates store in the muscles and liver as glycogen. If the diet is balanced properly this will not affect fat storage and will supply the muscles with enough energy to carry out about 90 minutes of aerobic exercise. Isolating foods such as fruits and eating them on their own will indirectly affect the absorption and digestion of other food sources.

Avoid eating fruit and dairy together. The acidity in the fruit will rot the milk in the stomach and slow the digestion process. This will result in people becoming lethargic and not absorbing the correct amount of nutrients. 70% of the human body is made up of water. Drinking a glass of water BEFORE every meal is essential to activating agni, the digestive fire that helps burn food and increase its absorption.

9

Eating food on smaller plates will create a psychological aspect to your eating and help reduce calories and cut out food cravings.

10

All results of any athlete will be 60-70% nutritionally based.

technically minded? No? Don’t worry. Neither are we, so we asked the tech boffins at Netversal for a few pointers Q1 Why my laptop is making clicking noise? Also, it does not load Windows anymore!

A There might be a problem with either HDD controller or HDD itself. Usually the clicking noise comes from the spindle attached to the read write head of the HDD. In this instance a replacement of the HDD is recommended.

have it replaced since most of the laptops have the CR2032 fitted in them and it can easily be replaced after taking the bottom cover off. If after battery replacement the problem still persists then consult your nearest Laptop Repair Centre for further advice.

Q3 The CD/DVD drive of my laptop is not reading discs. Help!!!

A Your laptop’s CMOS battery is weak and need replacement. It should not cost too much to

Q5 There is no sound coming out of my laptop speakers.

A Try adjusting the volume using the function key and the volume buttons on your keyboard. On some laptops there is a potentiometer at the side or on the front of the laptop allowing you to adjust the volume. If the problem persists then the laptop may have audio driver issue.

There are two methods of solving this problem, first one: if the drive is not too old then you can try to clean the laser lens head with a cotton bud, if this does not help then take the laptop to the nearest Laptop repair Centre for further advice.

Q7 For some reason I can’t find some files on my Hard Drive. Is it possible to do something about this?

A Yes it’s possible to restore your lost or deleted data. It’s possible in the case if data is not overwritten. Data process consist of two steps. In the case if your Hard Drive has no mechanical issue the allocation table can be reduilt. You will see folders with your documents. In the end the marked folders can be restored. The process is time consuming.

Q8

Q9

Can I use non original charger with my Laptop?

My laptop is slow can I fix the problem with additional RAM?

A

A

It’s not recommended, but if you have no option, then the voltage of the replacement charger MUST not be higher than the voltage requirements of your Laptop. You can find voltage and amperage requirements on the back side of your laptop. Amperage of the charger must not be less than required.

It depends on the installed system and hardware. Usually 32bit system cannot support more than 2GB RAM, 64bit hardware is able to support more than 2GB RAM. Netbooks usually have only 1GB memory, some of them can manage 2GB. Usually we recommend system cleaning & tuning. It will improve your computer in a cost effective way.

At Leomax our mission is to offer outstanding personal service in a professional and timely manner. We realize your time is important and we can repair your computer at your home or office or provide a pick up/drop off service at your convenience.
