The Capitals represent Edinburgh in the professional Rapid Solicitors Elite Ice Hockey League, with participants from every corner of the United Kingdom, including clubs from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England. Ice hockey is dubbed the fastest team sport in the world and it is UK’s most popular team sport played indoors. The popularity of ice hockey is growing in the UK as the average attendance of EIHL regular season matches climbed over 2000 spectators in 2011/12, and this season Sky Sports has included ice hockey in its weekly programme.

The Capitals team consist of both local and international talent, with a long time captain and fan-favourite Martin Cingel also returning home this season. Another notable signing for this season is defenseman Michael Dobron, a former Czech international with more than 600 matches in the Czech top flight Extraleague. Unlike most EIHL clubs, the Capitals import players are all European; resulting in fans nicknaming the club “Euro Army”. Coached by experienced Slovak forward Richard Hartmann the team is prepared to play fast paced, gritty and attractive ice hockey. The Capitals also have retained last season top scoring League forward Rene Jarolin. The Capitals play their home matches in the Murrayfield Ice Rink, located off the Corstorphine Road and next to Murrayfield Stadium. For the match day satisfaction the rink provides ice hockey fans a cafeteria, snack-stalls, merchandise desk and bar area. The parking is free of charge and the stadium is easily reachable by public transport. Please note there are no card facilities at the ice rink. Seating is tiered and the prices start from adults £14-£16, conc. £10 £12, child £5-£8. Kids prices are from age 5 to 16, under 5s are free. Everest Restaurant Review “Namas Te” the waiter (Baikuntha) greeted us with, as we entered The Everest Restaurant.

To drink, we tried the traditional Nepalese beer known as Khukuri, premium lager beer; which the staff told us was “the essence of Nepal.”

My husband, my sister and I went to The Everest Restaurant for a meal in October and it was absolutely fantastic. First of all the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. We were very excited to try Nepalese food as we never had done before… and it was spectacular. The staff informed us that it was a family run business and that the family all originally came from Nepal. They had an extensive menu of flavoursome food.

The restaurant itself had a really nice, inviting atmosphere, the service was excellent and the restaurant was filled with beautiful decorations and Napalese features.

My sister is a vegetarian and they were able to cater to her needs. I am a meat eater and I must say the quality of the food was outstanding. The chef used specialised Nepalese spices; imbu, jimb and timbu. As soon as we sat down, we were served with popadoms with a large variety of sauces; onions and mango, mixed pickle, mint sauce … a great start to our evening. For starter we shared the chicken momo and mixed choyia served with small chapats. I can safely say that the best started I have ever eaten was in The Everest Restaurant. I had the Everest chicken, which was beautiful, and full of flavour ... the food tasted so fresh! My husband had the Lukla lamb; long slices of lamb stuffed with mince served with a delicious variety of spices. This was accompanied by garlic naan and pilau rice.

Elaine Davidson is the world record holder for body piercing in the Guinness Book of Records and as of March 2012 her piercings total 9,000. Elaine has now achieved a new Guinness Record … “The person holding the piercing record for the longest time”. The former nurse from Brazil, who now stays in Edinburgh, first broke the record in May 2000, when a Guinness World Records official examined her and found 462 piercings on various parts of her body, including 192 on her facial area alone. “People often just want to look at me or touch me – some even want to kiss me,” Elaine says. Elaine never removes the rings and studs, which she estimates weigh a total of three kilos. She insists there is no pain involved in piercing and sleeps soundly with all of her piercing ornaments in place. However, while she is travelling the world, she keeps all her piercing ornaments in place but must remember to take her watch off when going through airport security scanners! A lady of many talents, Elaine also sleeps on a bed of nails, walks on fire and lies on broken glass, and holds a black belt in Judo that she earned in Japan. Elaine also enjoys extreme sports such as “Sky Diving”, “Horse Riding”, “The Trampoline”, loves the Theatre because of the costumes and she loves dressing up. Elaine does not drink, take drugs or smoke cigarettes and she wants people to know this. In some ways this is because she sees her position in the Guinness Book of Records as a responsibility as much as a dedication. However, Elaine does have a soft spot for coca cola. If you’re lucky enough you might spot Elaine on The Royal Mile in Edinburgh!!

The Clothing Bank was the first company in the United Kingdom to offer a (50 pence per kilo) reward to the public for recycling their textile waste. Establishing itself in Edinburgh, it was set up to make recycling for the public as convenient and rewarding as possible, founded on the principles of “Be Green, Be Ethical.” Daniel Taylor, Director, says, “We don’t just accept good quality clothing – we actually want your textile waste. That might sound odd, but the goal of the company to reduce the amount going to landfill. Green is our focus – we offset our carbon emissions, use recycled and eco-friendly products throughout the company and try to work with companies that have similar environmental commitments as we do." A clear example of such ethical decision making has been The Clothing Bank’s choice not to export used clothing and accessories, Daniel says, “We are not against exporting. We just feel that it should be done in a responsible and ethical way. Although The Clothing Bank is a for-profit company, we do not maximise profit at the expense of the environment. The majority of textiles we receive are sent to British companies who turn it into cleaning cloths, carpet tiles and thermal insulation. In addition we work with local groups and individuals that have a need for textiles. We are always keen to support those with innovative ideas in up-cycling and reworked fashion, for example we supply artists, designers and theatre groups, our primary concern is the reuse of textiles." The Clothing Bank run a resale outlet located at 136 Nicolson Street ... combining simple style with very low prices, they have created a truly unique shop. Daniel says, “After preparation and cleaning we are able to resell approximately 10% of our collections. Our staff are chosen for their background in fashion and knowledge of environmental issues, enabling us to create a boutique shopping experience without boutique prices.”

Domaine Arnoux, Côtes du Ventoux, 2010, £9.10 – Ash. “There is something excellent about Grenache based wines. It’s probably their sheer generosity, they present to you absolutely everything they’ve got. This is nowhere more true than in the Southern Rhone. The nose of this Ventoux is full of red fruit jam with some redcurrant and cherry tartness. Berries continue on the palate where the wine is weightier and longer on the finish than you usually deserve for spending under a tenner. While it doesn’t have the complexity found elsewhere in France and therefore it doesn’t engage the mind as much, it definitely engages the heart – it’s a lot of fun. One of the best value wines you will find anywhere. You can drink this with fuller flavoured white meats and it will also work well with most red meat, though the best accompaniment is probably a couple of friends.” Cameleon, Malbec, 2011, £10.70 – Erica. “Malbec has seen a huge boom in popularity recently bringing new interest not only to this once almost forgotten Bordeaux varietal, but to the other wines of its now adopted homeland, Argentina. This example ticks all the boxes and is popular with our regulars because it delivers what is expected of well made malbec. Intense colour in the glass, almost inky black gives clues to the style of wine you’re about to taste. A nose of concentrated black fruit with just a hint of the dark chocolate and coffee flavours typical of the variety. This is a full bodied wine where the big texture delivers big flavour, ripe fruit, nutmeg spice and some toast from the oak. The big, chewy tannins finish up what is a great wine from an excellent producer, which also happens to be organic. Steak has become the classic match for malbec, but try with other roasted and grilled red meats, aubergine bakes or a strong farmhouse cheddar.” Liberty School, Chardonnay, 2009, £14.10 – Jared. “’I don’t like chardonnay’ is a sad and frustratingly common phrase I hear when talking to people about wine. Sad because it’s my favourite grape, common because of the bad experiences people had with terrible chardonnay in the early ‘90s when they frequently had too much oak, alcohol and rich fruit forwardness. This Californian example is part of the fight back, a new wave of New World chardonnays that are produced with the care, elegance and finesse they’ve been using in Burgundy for decades. An inviting rich golden colour, peach, pineapple, butter and coconut are just some of the many flavours you get from the complex nose. It has fantastic presence on the palate, weighty enough to deliver lemon peel and vanilla flavours but with a reassuring streak of acidity to lift the wine and ultimately make you want another sip. If you’ve shunned chardonnay for years, challenge yourself to give it another go, you don’t know what you’ve been missing!”

We made a great team and as the business began to do well, we decided to expand into another branch in Nicolson Street, which is also successful on its own merit”.

As the youngest of four children in a large and supportive family, Sofia Mir was born in 1977 in Manchester. Although much of her childhood is embedded within the family’s Mancunian roots, they decided to relocate to Edinburgh in sight of pursuing business opportunities in the early eighties. With the family moving into a flat above the shop her father initially opened in Edinburgh’s Marchmont area, Ms. Mir began her experience of the practical workings of business on-hand alongside sisters Aisha and Sarah, and brother Imran. In the small Edinburgh seaside town of Portobello, her father’s next endeavor was that of opening up a newsagent. This was to signal the beginning of the family’s growing Edinburgh enterprises. Ms. Mir states her father is still remembered fondly within the Portobello area – “Dad was very passionate about integration, community, education, and of course honest hard work. He managed to build a great reputation as a result of it”. As a health and beauty enthusiast, Ms. Mir decided to indulge her passion for the beauty industry in the form of a beauty salon that she created and managed for four years. However, it was during this period that the family began to build and expand upon their other business enterprises, and as their small empire grew, Ms. Mir was made responsible for handling the property portfolio dimension of the business. Using her invaluable insight into the gritty workings of the property industry, alongside her ambitious outlook and determined vision, the business consequently began to expand beyond Edinburgh and into West Lothian and Kirkcaldy. By the millennium, Sofia Mir had firmly established herself as a striving, hardworking entrepreneur at the heart of a growing business empire. She then began the ambitious project of building her own property portfolio. “I get a real thrill from business, especially in property. After the stress of wheeling, dealing and negotiating, there’s a tremendous buzz when a deal goes through. That was, and is still what remains, as the greatest driving factor in business for me”, she explains. It was this reputable drive and determination for success that resulted in Ms. Mir being hired by a national property developer based in London to work as a consultant. “Working for someone else was a real eye opener” she states. “It gave me a different perspective on business, especially property. I learned so much that I was able to apply to my future business endeavors.” While working as a consultant through most of her early twenties, alongside managing her own and the family’s portfolio, Ms. Mir was successful in managing all three of her roles at the core of each business through sheer drive and determination. However, as the family business experienced another round of growth and expansion, she made the decision to enter full-time into her role within the emerging empire. Ms. Mirs’ entrepreneurial spirit ventured into the technologies industry in 2004, where, alongside her brother, they decided to open up as a technology retailer. Their brother-sister working relationship proved a great success – “I provided my brother with assistance to get up and running.

Ms. Mir made her strong business acumen and sharp-minded skills available to others through becoming a shareholder in a number of ventures, helping business to significantly improve their turnaround. As a successful Asian herself, Ms. Mir holds strong beliefs in regards to assisting other Asian businesses achieve success through using her business insight, and consequently contributing positively to the community. One such example was her investment in a large Edinburgh based Asian cash and carry, Boksh Wholesale, which offered her the perfect opportunity to materialize her belief. Already a successful Edinburgh based business, Ms. Mir played a crucial role in expanding both the wholesale and retail dimension of Boksh Wholesale, which involved venturing into emerging international markets such as Morocco & China. “My dad always taught us that as the world is constantly changing, business methods have to as well. Business is becoming hugely international, but at the same time, I wanted to assist individuals in my community to use modern business methods to improve, and successfully maintain, the businesses they had worked so hard to build. It was a personal way for me to give back to my community”, explains Ms. Mir. However, the family experienced an excruciatingly difficult time when Ms. Mir’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. After 5 years in remission, the family was stunned when Mrs. Mir was diagnosed with liver cancer and required a liver transplant. Ms. Mir’s sister, Aisha Mir, remembers, “It was such an awful time for everyone. Everything happened so fast, especially since it was touch and go for a while. Mum has always been the backbone of the family, and without her we would have fallen apart”. An already tight knit family became closer as they supported the woman who had always supported them in everything they had ever done. Ms. Mir states her mother remained the backbone of the family as she battled the disease. “She was the calmest and most rational one out of all of us!” Sofia puts her success down to her parents instilling a strong work ethic within her, alongside realizing the importance of family support. “It’s not about money – you have to get the right people and do the right thing for your customer, whatever line of business you’re in. If you get that right, the rest will follow”. As for her family, “We drive each other nuts sometimes, but no matter what, we are always there for each other one hundred percent”. Ms. Mir’s passion for the cosmetic industry did not disappear for long. Her latest venture, a cosmetic and laser clinic named Le Dermex, opened its doors in August on South Clerk Street, Edinburgh and offers a wide range of beauty treatments and procedures. “My love for beauty never completely vanished”, Ms. Mir explain. “I always knew that my heart always truly belonged in this industry. Simply put, women just want to look good! I have plans in motion to open up a second clinic, and I’m determined to assist women in realizing their beauty potential.” Her clinic offers a wide variety of services such as laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation and anti-aging injectables, alongside everyday beauty essential such as waxing and manicures. “My focus was, is and will always remain providing the right service for my customers. Burning Fat – A State Of Ketosis. The Truth About Body Transformation. 1) Burning fat can be a complex concept. To burn fat the body needs to know you want it to burn fat. The body expends its energy through proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The body will tend to metabolise carbohydrates initially as they are the most accessible, when we intake carbohydrates the pancreas produces insulin and breaks carbohydrates into simple sugars which in turn provides a rise in blood sugars, we use this to perform day to day tasks. With modern day life we tend to eat too much of the wrong type of sugar and at times when the body does not require them. From this the body finds it difficult to use any of the fat you have taking on board. To burn fat we need to turn the brain into a state of “ketosis” we want to tell the body that it wants to use fat as its main energy source. How to do this? We do this by manipulating the way we eat our other macro nutrients, with carbohydrate manipulation being a key factor in this process. Insulin sensitivity is the process in which we minimise insulin production to keep blood sugars regular and the body can begin to start burn fat as energy. 2) Follow a 6 week diet plan based around carbohydrate and water manipulation. Cycling your carbohydrates enables the body to deplete glycogen levels from Monday-Wednesday by taking in zero to minimal carbohydrates. On these days increasing protein and “good fat” is imperative to maintain a suitable calorie intake. Following this you will have a high, medium and low carbohydrate intake from Thursday, Friday and Saturday respectively. However on these days fat intake will decrease dramatically whilst maintaining high levels of protein throughout. 3) To assist in the fat burning process your training regime should focus on HIIT( High Intensity Interval-anaerobic). We want to a create a higher intensity to your workout by keeping your heart rate at it’s maximum throughout your workout, as it creates a greater post-exercise oxygen consumption. 4) Season your foods with herbs and spices which create capsaicin to create a greater body temperature so that the body has a greater blood flow, the body will then begin to begin more energy. Essentially you are burning calories as you eat.

Biz Beauty Bible We all want to look good and feel good; here are a few tips that the experts in the health and beauty industry have learned over the years! 1. If you have a cold, smear lip balm around your nose to stop that post-sniffle cracking and flaking. (Not very glamorous, but effective.)

2. Brushing on powder is great for dealing with shine, but it can build up and look like a ‘cake-bake’. We like ‘blotting sheets’ which simply lift off the oil, or at a pinch, you can use a Kleenex or even a piece of soft loo paper: simply peel the two layers apart, and press one onto shiny patches. 3. The best beauty tool you’ll ever find is an old mascara wand. When you get to the end of your mascara, clean the brush with an oil-based or foaming cleanser to get rid of every last trace of product, then dry and use for combing brows into place. 4. When you’re testing lipstick colour at a counter, apply to the inner pads of your fingertips, which have a natural rosiness not unlike lips, giving a much better impression of how a shade will appear on your lips. You can also extend the lippie and hold it horizontally in front of your mouth to see what it looks like with your skintone. 5. Light-reflecting concealers don’t just work to conceal dark shadows: stroke the brush or wand along frown-lines, pat – and they’re instantly diminished 6. When you’ve had a manicure or pedicure, avoid soaking your hands/feet in a bath that evening. Hot water softens polish, encouraging peeling – so if you are going to bathe, keep your newly-varnished extremities above the water-line. 7. No matter how great and ‘foolproof’ your fake tan, you will always get better results by thoroughly exfoliating then moisturising first. 8. To whisk away the hard skin on feet, use a foot file with a very light touch, as hard whisking will compact the skin’s layers. And lastly – SMILE, it really does make you beautiful :)
