Bølger (2022 – 24)
Waves for clarinet, soprano saxophone, bass flute, violoncello
Dur. 12′
NOTE
Bølger is a piece about waves: the waves that we hear when we are at the sea, and the acoustic sound waves that constantly interfere and mix with each other in order to form what we call timbre – the specific spectral characteristics that make it possible to recognize the sound of an instrument.
In this piece, the timbres of the instruments are constantly explored, as the piece evolves around very few tones that are extended and bent through different playing techniques. The clarinet is in front and plays through a drum that acts as an acoustic amplifier and a timbral expander. The new acoustics of the clarinet appear as both a disturbance and a force or wave that swallows the instrument.

PERFORMANCE NOTES
Clarinet
The clarinet is played through a floor tom, by placing the bell on the floor tom. The clarinet player has a lead function in the piece, and plays rubato in order to find the many different resonances that appear when playing through the drum.
Violoncello
IV string (C) is tuned down, scordatura to G.
Saxophone
All multiphonics are taken from Weiss.
Bass Flute
Multiphonics are taken from Carin Levine
NOTATION
Triangle head: the instrument is to produce an air sound without pitch.
Diamond head: the clarinet is placed with its bell on the floor tom and played through the drum.
Dashed slurs: indicate gradual transition from one tone or timbre to another.
