PROGRAMME NOTES Saxo Grammaticus is the first known danish writer from about 1200. He wrote - in latin - about the earliest danish history. His Gesta Danorum contains a wealth of histories, myths, poems and some uncontrollable historical facts. I have chosen the all too obvious alikeness between the saxophone and Saxo, because I have enjoyed his histories since my boyhood. However, the music do not refer to any explicit ‘history’ of Saxo. It contains a number of musical ‘histories’ articulated by different harmonies and timings and the relations between the melodic lines of the saxophones and the electronics, one of which is a contemporary fugal design. Architecturally the piece is divided into 5 sections. Each introduces a new instrument: sopranino - baryton - baryton - alto - alto/ contrabass duo, all of which are tuned in E-flat. Two ‘slow’ sections evokes an alternative musical form in five movements, adding some ambiguity to the overall perception.
