A VERY ATTRACTIVE REGION As of 1st January 2010, Aquitaine had the 6th largest population among the French regions, with 3.2 million inhabitants. In eleven years, the population has grown by 11.0 %, i.e. at a faster rate than average for mainland France (7.3 %). It is one of the most attractive and demographically dynamic French regions.

Travel and trade are facilitated by six airports, TGV high speed train links, TER regional express trains, ports in Bordeaux and Bayonne, and a well-developed motorway network. Installation of information and communication technologies (ICT) continues to develop strongly in homes and businesses.

In 2010, Aquitaine was France’s 11th largest exporting region, with 13.3 billion euros of exports and imports worth 11.4 billion euros. Its foreign trade is highly concentrated in a few specialised industries: agrifood, aeronautics and space, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

The Tours-Bordeaux high-speed railway service will reduce the Bordeaux-Paris trip to just 2 hours in 2017 and is expected to attract 20 million passengers. By around 2020, the line will be extended to Spain and Toulouse. In addition, the new Poitiers-Limoges line will improve rail links to Périgueux. The opening of the Pau-Bordeaux motorway in December 2010 completed the Aquitaine highway network.

The ICT industry represents over 3,700 firms and nearly 23,000 jobs in Aquitaine. This is the leading French region for healthrelated ICT businesses, with almost half the country’s total turnover in this sector.
NB : These figures do not cover imports to Aquitaine. The presence of logistics hubs and facilities in this region means it receives imports intended not only for Aquitaine but also for other parts of France. Thanks to the vehicle logistics hub at the Port of Bayonne, the automotive industry represented 10 % of the region’s imports

YOUNG FIRMS CREATE JOBS The 3,545 businesses established in 2006 and still operating in 2009 accounted for 8,739 jobs, including 5,002 salaried positions. Their workforces had grown by 28.7 % since they went into business.

Tourist-related activities employ some 67,000 people, including 38,400 direct jobs, amounting to nearly 6 % of the total Aquitaine workforce. Almost two thirds work in the hotel and restaurant sectors, mainly along the coast, with strong seasonal variations.

The number of engineering students has grown by over 70 % in the past ten years. The Institut d’Optique Graduate School (IOGS) will open a campus in Aquitaine in 2012, with an intake of 100 undergraduates and 50 Master’s degree students.

From CAP (level 3) to BTS (level 5), one in four young people in vocational training choose apprenticeships
Two vocational training centres in Aquitaine were among the four «Investment in the future» programmes selected in the entire country: Aérocampus in Latresne (Gironde) and the «résidence jeunes travailleurs» in Bordes (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). They provide vocational sandwich courses and accommodation for apprentices in the aeronautics industry.

Bordeaux University was chosen to participate in the countrywide «Plan Campus» scheme to establish 12 internationally-recognised university centres of excellence in France. 12
accounted for nearly two thirds of this sum. Aquitaine represented 2.8 % of total French DIRD and 5.1 % excluding the figures for Paris.
