Introduction Welcome to the International Catalogue of FTD Educação. We have eagerly selected the titles presented here favouring diversity in the themes and genres. Two criteria were especially important for our choices: the impact of literature on society and innovation.

Urgent, contemporary issues are the main themes of Mina and Her Tiny Lights: in Defense of Childhood (ages 4 to 8) and A Neighborhood against Silence: in Defense of Life (ages 8 and up). Through fictional narratives, the books address issues such as children’s and young adults’ empowerment, self-knowledge, sexuality and sexual violence.

Written by the journalist and specialist in communication and education Januária Alves, they help children and adolescents develop behaviors to stay safe and learn to seek help when needed.

The illustrations of the children’s book were carefully thought out to give lightness to the work. The young adult book’s illustrations help teenage readers identify themselves with the narrative.

The books, which also include educational videos that can be accessed via QR Code, are part of a large campaign titled Protect Yourself, which was in the running for the Certificate of Excellence granted by the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2016.

Another highlight is the collection Hither and Thither, made up of four illustrated works which, in a playful and thoughtprovoking manner, explore issues in science such as perspective, reflexes, sets and balance. The Tunnel and The Scale were published in 2019, and The Mirror and The Clothesline will be launched in 2020. Written by the renowned architect, visual artist and illustrator Renata Bueno, who has had various books published in Brazil in Europe, these works are aimed at small children and written in capital letters. The perfect harmony between text and illustration awakens children’s spontaneous curiosity.

THE SCALE Right at the beginning of the story, we see a pretty scale, much like those that could once be found in old markets.
