Introduction Welcome to the International Catalogue of FTD Educação. We have eagerly selected the titles presented here favouring diversity in the themes and genres. Two criteria were especially important for our choices: the impact of literature on society and innovation. Urgent, contemporary issues are the main themes of Mina and Her Tiny Lights: in Defense of Childhood (ages 4 to 8) and A Neighborhood against Silence: in Defense of Life (ages 8 and up). Through fictional narratives, the books address issues such as children’s and young adults’ empowerment, self-knowledge, sexuality and sexual violence.

Written by the journalist and specialist in communication and education Januária Alves, they help children and adolescents develop behaviors to stay safe and learn to seek help when needed. The illustrations of the children’s book were carefully thought out to give lightness to the work. The young adult book’s illustrations help teenage readers identify themselves with the narrative. The books, which also include educational videos that can be accessed via QR Code, are part of a large campaign titled Protect Yourself, which was in the running for the Certificate of Excellence granted by the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2016.

Another highlight is the collection Hither and Thither, made up of four illustrated works which, in a playful and thoughtprovoking manner, explore issues in science such as perspective, reflexes, sets and balance. The Tunnel and The Scale were published in 2019, and The Mirror and The Clothesline will be launched in 2020. Written by the renowned architect, visual artist and illustrator Renata Bueno, who has had various books published in Brazil in Europe, these works are aimed at small children and written in capital letters. The perfect harmony between text and illustration awakens children’s spontaneous curiosity.

his books published in various countries. With innovative graphic design, the book tells three stories that take place in the city of Rio de Janeiro and are connected through bonds of affection. It brings the perspective of three generations upon the hardship and beauty of everyday life. The illustrations by Adriano Catenzaro are outstanding. The composition of cutouts and paper collages of different thicknesses, colors and textures draw a portrait of the city of Rio de Janeiro, a complex and fascinating metropolis. Through a QR Code on the back cover, the reader can gain access to an animation in which the book’s illustrations come to life.

In the category Young Adults, the big launch is Kaleidoscope of Lives, by João Anzanello Carrascoza, an award-winning author in Brazil who has had

This scale has two trays on which are set toys, fruit, animals and other objects. Thus, this type of knowledge is presented in a playful way: objects may weigh more, or less. The themes of the book are relevant because they address issues from a mathematical standpoint in an original way.

VERY DIFFERENT PEOPLE Written by the acclaimed author Ana Maria Machado, this story is narrated by two characters, in alternate moments: Andreia and Rodrigo. The two share their discoveries about their own family, “very different people.” To them, everyone has a secret identity: Andreia’s grandmother is a princess; her grandfather, a pirate; her mother, a fairy; and her father can be either a genius or a giant. Andreia and Rodrigo show great familiarity with the universe of children’s literature, referring to Snow White, The Princess and the Pea, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Peter Pan. Fun and poetic, the work draws attention to the changing social roles of women, men and the elderly, and suggests that magic and charm can be found in small acts of everyday life. He introduces us to toys that seem very relevant to our lives: the Tray of Cups, which shakes our ideas, or the Mirrors of Perfection, which point out our desires and weaknesses, among others. One of the best things about the text is its ability to help readers visualize the toys. To do this, the illustrations depict sensations rather than the actual toys. THE VOICES OF ANCESTORS Daniel Munduruku compiles and retells ten tales about indigenous people who live in Brazil. The author invited Indians of different ethnicities to choose the stories and transcribe them as they were originally told. Some tribes chose tales of creation; others, fables; and others try to pass on their traditions. Each indigenous group is depicted with beautiful photos to bring a little of their culture to life. There are also landscapes that show the geographic diversity of the territory where the indigenous peoples live in Brazil. Wilmar D’Angelis, an indigenous person, linguist and university teacher, pens the afterword. For him, “this book offers the readers a chance to be in touch with other ways of talking about the different realities of the world or teaching these differences to the younger generations.”

EVERY DAY IS DOOMSDAY In order to write this book, Rodrigo Lacerda read official reports, mostly from science magazines that present research on pollution and global warming. Some proposals, which he classiďŹ es as eccentric, suggest that citizens share equally the damage resulting from environmental problems, instead of trying to eliminate them. Every day is Doomsday uses a peculiar, good-humored voice to introduce a science magazine journalist sent to cover a UN event that discusses the ways in which we can ensure the lives of future generations. The man is shocked with the absurd ideas proposed by scientists. The resignation in the scientists’ views inspires the journalist to reevaluate his way of life on the planet, his choices and his relationships. To conclude, Lacerda invites the reader to think again about the environmental crisis. MACUNAÍMA – THE HERO WITH NO CHARACTER One of the most exciting books in Brazilian literature, Macunaíma (1928) is a kind of “open encyclopedia” of geography, nature, culture and Brazilian people. In the book, we can find out about folk traditions, indigenous people’s cultures, historical events, as well as humor, poetry and stylistic freedom to invent words, for example. According to writer and university professor Noemi Jaffe, who writes the afterword and the book notes, Macunaíma “is certainly not a quick reading. It’s a book that should be read slowly, back and forth, and reread.” This edition includes 697 glossary entries as well as 540 notes that attempt to enlighten, deepen, and bring theoretical context and criticism to the text. Mariana Zanetti’s colorful and anthropophagic illustrations contribute to this original edition of a modern classic of Brazilian literature.

GULLIVER’S TRAVELS Lemuel Gulliver is a surgeon who loves cruises. Over more than sixteen years, he has several adventures and five of his journeys are incredible: he explores an empire where people never grow to more than six inches tall; a kingdom where the smallest dwarf is nine meters tall; a flying island; an island of sorcerers; a country of civilized horses and wild hominids. In a story narrated in the first person, the main character, Gulliver, talks about his travels in which fantasy predominates, stimulating the reader’s reflection about our own behavior, values and attitudes, not always consistent. A masterpiece by one of the greatest writers of the English language. AMAZING BIRDS Birds are a key element in many cultures around the world. The thunderbird is a Native American legend. The Kamchatka Golden Eagle is a Siberian tale. The nightingale lives on in a traditional Sufi story. The Jewish people tell stories about the bird in Noah’s Ark. Nigerians tell tales about the Iworo bird, the French treasure the blue bird, and the firebird is the bird of the Slavs. From the Roman Phoenix to the Brazilian woodpecker and the Celts’ albatross, in every culture, to value a bird is to - first and foremost - strive for freedom. This book bridges the gap between concept books and longer narrative stories by bringing together words and pictures that will enchant young audiences over and over again.
