MĂŁos pequeninas e grandonas, Ladies and Gentlemen, um meet tablet Editora e um novo formato Pipoca! de livro digital.

We understand that the fun of a good book can also happen through digital devices, and that’s why we decided to bet and start the first publisher of digital e-books for children in Brazil: support for reading may change, but children’s literature remains the same. Well... almost the same as the additional features that an e-book may have – sound effects, storytelling, animations and interactions – do make them richer. Kids today are digital natives and, for them, the use of computers and tablets is just natural, so why not encourage them also to read on these devices? Digital or not, what really matters is that children have access to books that have pedagogical and editorial coordination and that are made taking into consideration the responsibility that producing culture is – specially culture for children.

Pipoca’s books are created taking into account the different developmental levels of children so that the digital resources actually enrich the book, become part of the story and bring elements to further interpretation, pointing out the story itself rather than distracting the reader. Our projects are thought in digital format and we want kids to have fun and find out how books can be a great companion! The history of digital books is still being built but, as stated by Marisa Lajolo, a brazilian PhD in children’s literature, the path is already paved. Some say that digital books are not an option for children because they are not made to be read, that they are not real books. But historically, children’s literature has always been a pioneer in incorporating new languages. The first book produced specifically for children united

two languages: in addition to writing, there was the illustration. Time has passed, and graphic design was also incorporated and made it possible to offer different formats of books. Now, the language this kind of books can incorporate is digital. And this is exactly what we are doing in Pipoca’s books! We do agree that caution is needed regarding the use of technology, and that’s why our books feature age indication. Professionals of the diverse areas of children’s literature still discuss if these age indications are needed because the readers should choose the books, and not the reverse. But we understand that it is necessary to know the logic of children’s thinking in each of their development stages to produce our books using the most appropriate technological resources for these different phases. This is the only

way they can enrich (rather than disturb) reading. Our criteria for age indication are based on the Belarusian psychologist Vygostki’s theories of development and learning. And the way we define the indication is from the textual construction assessments. This does not mean, however, that the books cannot be enjoyed by younger or older children. We are grown ups and still love children’s books! Based on these criteria, we formed the catalog that we present next.

FOR KIDS FROM 3 TO 4

Inside my closet. With mostly regular and some free verses, the rhythm of the poems in this book is natural and enjoyable, and makes reading aloud a good option for calling children’s attention. In general, kids between 3 and 4 years old have already learned the native language and rhythm and rhymes transform the language into play, helping their understanding. When together with fantastic characters who are, at the same time, a little scary and very charming, it’s possible to get into the playful and fanciful aspect of the infant universe. The book includes animation, sound effects, storytelling and interaction.* HTTP://BIT.LY/RACAUG

FOR KIDS FROM 3 TO 4

My dog friend. Simple, short sentences, with a few puns that relate to the playfulness between a dog and his owner, the very words become a constant game in this story. A book that entertains with the complementation between text, illustrations and technological resourses, allowing little ones to understand the challenges presented by the situations created by the friendship between the dog and his owner. This book features animation, interaction and storytelling.*

FOR KIDS FROM 4 TO 6

A gift for Cecilia. Rhymes are not only present in poems! They can also be found in a tale. In addressing the passing of time, children are led to think of themselves in relation to the world – a very interesting theme for those who are in that beautiful process of discovering that everyone is unique. This book brings a linear narrative, slightly broken by some intersections, and use a little more elaborate language to refer to the main character without difficulting the understanding of the narrative. It has animation and storytelling.* HTTP://BIT.LY/MEFP24

The star collector. This is a phase of understanding emotions, and children can become enchanted with the materalization of these deeper sentiments, which is the motto of this book. With syntactic features that reduce the story’s linearity and with intense use of metaphors, the positioning of the text in the book makes the reading flow with the movement of the illustrations, just as emotions flow in us. This book contains storytelling and sound effects.*

Helius. Complicity and sensibility are the theme of this book, and these can be found in words and in relationships. Sensibility can also be found in the fine use of words that can be as light as helius. The complicity between illustrations, resources and writing lives up to these characteristics present in this story. There are figurative and syntactic resources that require a slightly higher reading ability. This book features animation, interaction, sound effects and storytelling.* HTTP://BIT.LY/1MX7MHR

FOR KIDS FROM 5 TO 7

What do you wanna be when you eat? An agile, dynamic, curious and fun story which encourages the thinking of children that are changing from being a small child, but still have fun with the fantastic thought. And just because they are bigger, the book allowed the use of more tools for interaction with the text, as well as sound effects and storytelling.*

˜ A coleçao de Maya FOR KIDS FROM 6 TO 8

Maya’s collection. There are so many ways to construct sentences and a text... One is reducing the linearity of the story to thereby create a mystery about the direction of characters and plot. What is the collection that Maya wants? What are the limits of our desires? Starting a process of thinking more based on argumentative logic than emotions, this is a good issue for children in this developmental phase. The book includes animation, sound effects, storytelling and interaction.*

Esquecidos PARA OS PEQUENOS GRANDINHOS DE 7 A 9 ANOS

The forgotten. There are two features of this book that are directly related to the developmental stage of the children in this age group : the textual construction, which presents breaks, generates good tension and demands attention; and the complexity determined in the narrative, which means that there is a certain challenge to the understanding of the story. Text and illustrations are united with delicacy and fantasy to this complexity. The book features animation, sound effects, storytelling and interaction.* HTTP://BIT.LY/1KW0SJU

FOR KIDS FROM 8 TO 10

Once upon a time‌ a Witch! What if a witch is not bad? And if the princess is... well, let’s not tell the story! But we can assure that children who have passed the stage of strictly following rules (or those who are in this process) have fun with the role reversal of the characters. This grants good laughs and helps to sharpens the human ability to understand humor. The book features sound effects, animation and storytelling.*

FOR KIDS FROM 10 TO 12

Chamomille, the flower girl. There is delicacy in many places, in many ways... One example is the lyricism of poetry, another is the craftsmanship of the illustrations. But delicacy is also a kind of strength! And it is essential for the moments of transition in life. The book addresses these moments with delicacy and strength in its words. It’s a complex story, as are the changes – conflicting and rich – which children of this age are going through . Children with fluent reading achieve a better understanding of the text, as they reach their meaning more easily. The book presents soundtrack.* HTTP://BIT.LY/1BRZIGS

FOR ALL AGES

In the kitchen — savory recipes. Challenges, many challenges is what you will find in this book. We challenge children to build a tower of tomatoes; we challenge them to make a tasty dish, to take responsibility in the handling of ingredients and kitchen tools. But the challenges are not only for children, oh no! We also challenge adults to remain in the guiding position, letting them cook and helping only at times when the help is essential. Are you in? The book presents interactive features.*
