ALCALÁ DE LOS GAZULES Situado en el centro de la provincia de Cádiz, a 70 km de la capital, cuenta con 5439 habitantes. Alcalá está incluido en la ruta del toro, la comarca de la Janda y en el corazón del Parque Natural de los Alcornocales. HISTORIA La historia de Alcalá se remonta al Paleolitico Superior, manteniendo grabados rupestres como la “Laja de los Hierros”, y abundantes piedras y hachas pulimentadas que así lo testifican. No obstante, la primera población estable se dio en la Mesa del Esparragal, donde se halló el “Bronce de Lascuta” (189 a. de Cristo), primera inscripción romana de España, conservada hoy en el Museo de Louvre. Tras la conquista musulmana la población pasaría a llamarse “Qalat at Yazula” o “Castillo de los Gazules”. En 1264 la ciudad es reconquistada por Alfonso X el Sabio, años más tarde pasaría a depender del Señorío de los Ribera, Duques de Alcalá. La época contemporánea se abre para Alcalá con la presencia de los franceses, quienes a su marcha volaron el hasta entonces intacto Castillo, así como el puente romano. En Junio de 1876, Alfonso XII le concede el título de Ciudad en consideración a su progreso en población, comercio e industria. En 1984 se declaró el vericueto de calles de su casco antiguo “Conjunto Historico-Artístico”. MONUMENTOS Uno de los primeros recursos que el visitante encuentra al llegar a Alcalá son las únicas rocas igneas (de origen volcánico) de la provincia de Cádiz. Conocidas como las peñas; tienen mas de 200 millones de años. Cercano a Las Peñas encontramos el antiguo convento del Santo Domingo, edificio tardo-gótico del siglo XVI, con iglesia de cruz latina y tres naves, al que en el siglo XVI se le derrumbaron las naves del crucero y el ábside. De origen romano y cerca del mirador “La Coracha”, es el basamento del Castillo. Estuvo en uso hasta 1811 en que fue volado por los franceses. Hoy sólo se conserva parte de la Torre del Homenaje. En la plaza de San Jorge, se encuentra el edificio del antiguo Ayuntamiento, popularmente conocido como la Casa del Cabildo, un interesante edificio del siglo XVI (Cavallini o Cimabue); la Virgen del Rosario, primera obra conocida del genial Martinez Montañés; el Cristo Yaciente, atribuido a Juan de Mesa; una magnifica sillería coral, obra de Agustín de Medina y Flores en 1742; el órgano, de Francisco Pérez de Valladolid; 4 cuadros de Santas de la escuela de Zurbarán. Muy próximo a la parroquia se encuentra el antiguo Convento de Santa Clara, (XVI-XVII) originariamente convento de monjas de clausura y que hoy alberga las Escuelas Profesionales de la Sagrada Famila. Del primitivo edificio se conservan el claustro de galerías abiertas bajo arcos rebajados, que data del siglo XVII, así como la torre campanario de la desaparecida capilla. Podrá visitar también los depositos romanos de la Salada, junto a la fuente del mismo nombre y a la vía que popularmente se conoce como “la calzada”. Los dos depósitos datan del siglo II a. de Cristo. Junto a los depósitos, situada en la calle Nuestra Señora de los Santos, se encuentra la Fuente La Salada del siglo XVI. En la Alameda de la Cruz, se encuentra la iglesia de San Francisco, popularmente conocida como de la Victoria. Entre sus imágenes destaca la de Jesús Nazareno, obra de José de Montes de Oca. Enclavado en la calle Río Verde se encuentra el Museo Etnográfico, con los enseres, herramientas o útiles que recuerdan las
formas de trabajo que durante siglos fueron el medio de subsistencia de la mayoría de los alcalaínos. A cinco kilómetros de la población se encuentra la Ermita Santuario de Ntra. Sra. De los Santos. Es interesante señalar que en el Santuario se conserva la mayor y más interesante colección de exvotos de Andalucía. Cercano al núcleo urbano de Alcalá existen tres yacimientos arqueologicos, la Laja de los Hierro (grabados rupestres), la Mesa del Esparragal (yacimiento romano) y la necropolis de Monte Bajo; la única puesta en valor turístico de estos yacimientos. ARTESANÍA Alcalá de los Gazules cuenta con numeros productos aresanales de una gran variedad y calidad, se enecuentran entre los productos más apreciados aquellos derivados de profesiones y trabajos tradicionales como el alcornoque y el mundo del corcho, la forja, la guarnicionería, o la propia espartería que junto a los anteriores completan una extensa gama de artículos de calidad. GASTRONOMÍA Sus platos más representativos tienen su base en productos silvestres del campo, aunque tampoco se pueden olvidar los productos de caza. De entre los platos más conocidos, hay que resaltar el gazpacho caliente (parecido a la sopa de tomate). Otros platos muy conocidos son: las berzas, las sopas de espárragos y los estofados. Espárragos y tagarninas son utilizados también para revueltos y otros platos. Hay tres productos gastrónomicos que han dado fama al pueblo durante años: el pan cateto (pan moreno), la torta de pellizco y el queso de cabra payoya. FIESTAS Carnaval El Carnaval en Alcalá de los Gazules es una fiesta que tiene una duración de tres días y se celebra durante el mes de marzo. San Jorge El 23 de abril se celebra San Jorge, las fiestas en honor al patrón. El día grande de San Jorge es el 23 de abril que siempre es celebrado junto con el sábado y domingo más cercano a esa fecha. Feria La feria de Alcalá se celebra en el mes de agosto, normalmente suele ser el último fin de semana del mes, comienza el jueves y finaliza el domingo. Romería La Romería de Nuestra Señora de los Santos es una de las fiestas más populares del municipio de Alcalá de los Gazules, una festividad que data del siglo XVI que se celebra el mes de septiembre. PARQUE NATURAL LOS ALCORNOCALES Alcalá está integrado en el P.N. de los Alcornocales. El P.N. de los Alcornocales también es llamado la “Selva Ibérica”, por su vegetación ricamente autóctona y primitiva. Hay tres grandes ecosistemas a destacar el Alcornocal, el Quejigal y los canutos. Dentro del Parque Natural de los Alcornocales podemos disfrutar de varias rutas o senderos que nos permiten recorrer distintas zonas del parque. A tan sólo tres kilometros de nuestra población ( en el km. nº 1 de la carretera Alcalá-Benalup) se sitúa el jardín botánico “El Aljibe” y el centro de visitantes del Parque Natural “los Alcornocales”.
ALCALÁ DE LOS GAZULES Alcalá de los Gazules is a white hill-top village situated in the centre of the province of Cádiz, 70 km from the capital, in the district of La Janda. It has 5439 inhabitants. Alcalá is in the heart of the Alcornocales Natural Park and is included in the Route of the Bull (Ruta del Toro). HISTORY The history of Alcalá goes back to the Upper Palaeolithic era, as testified by rock carvings such as the Laja de los Hierros, and abundant finds of polished stones and axes. However, the first stable population was the Romans, who settled in La Mesa del Esparragal. The Bronce de Lascuta, the first Roman inscription found in Spain (dated 189 BC), was discovered there in 1867. It is preserved today in the Louvre. After the Muslim conquest in 711 the town was renamed the “Qalat at Yazula”, or Castillo de los Gazules. In 1264 the city was reconquered by the Christian armies of Alfonso X el Sabio. Some years later it passed to the House of Ribera, Dukes of Alcalá. In June 1876, King Alfonso XII gave Alcalá the title of City is consideration of its progress in population, trade and industry. In 1984, the oldest part of the town was declared a Site of Historical and Artistic Interest. PLACES OF INTEREST One of the first sights that the visitor encounters when arriving in Alcalá is a pile of black rocks known as Las Peñas, the only igneous (volcanic) rocks in the province of Cádiz. They are more than 200 million years old. Close to Las Peñas we find the old convent of Santo Domingo, a late-Gothic building from the 16th century. This church has a Latin cross with three naves, which were demolished in the 18th century. Near the scenic look-out point of La Coracha is the base of the castle, which is of Roman origin but completed during the Muslim period. Today only the Torre del Homenaje (the main tower) and some parts of the walls remain. In the Plaza San Jorge is the old town hall, popularly known as Casa del Cabildo, an interesting building dating from the 16th century. As for Alcalá´s religious monuments, the most oustanding is the Church o St. George (Iglesia Mayor Parroquial de San Jorge), which has been declared a monument of Cultural Interest. The Church has a Latin cross plan with three naves. Numerous pieces of great value can be seen; a Visigoth pedestal; a 14th century icon of San Sebastian by Cavallini or Cimabue, the first known work of the brilliant Martinez Montañes, the Cristo Yaciente (Recumbent Christ) attributed to Juan de Mesa; a magnificent choir stall; writings of Augustin de Medina y Flores of 1742; the organ of Francisco Pérez de Valladolid; and four paintings of Saints from the school of Zurbarán. Near the Church is the old Convent of Santa Clara, (16th-17th centuries) originally a convent of cloistered nuns but today a school, Escuelas Profesionales Sagrada Familia (SAFA). Preserved from the original building are the cloister of open galleries under low arches, which dates from the 17th century, and the bell tower of the former chapel. Halfway down Calle Nuestra Señora de los Santos you can visit the Roman deposits of La Salada,, two arched vaults dating back to the 2nd century BC, adjacent to a 16th-century water-trough of the same name. In the Alameda de la Cruz near the Town Hall is the Church of San Francisco, popularly known as La Victoria. There you can see the outstanding statue of Jesus Nazareno, a work by José de Montes de Oca. In Calle Rio Verde is the Ethnographic Museum, a collection of thousands of objects related to old trades, professions and household tasks, as a reminder of how the people of Alcalá lived in days gone by. Five km from the town is the Ermita Nuestra Señora de los Santos, known as the Santuario. Inside the little church is the finest collection of exvotos (pictorial offerings giving thanks to the Virgin) in Andalusia. Near the town of Alcalá there are three archaelogical sites; La Laja de los Hierros (rock carvins); La Mesa del Esparragal (Roman remains);
and the necropolis of Monte Bajo, in whose four burial sites (artificial caves) were found the remains of more than seventy people and numerous items 5000 years old.
CRAFTS Alcalá de los Gazules is endowed with a great variety of quality handicrafts derived from traditional occupations, such as items made from cork, wrought ironwork, saddlery, colourful harnesses for mules, items woven from esparto grass, palm leaves and bulrushes, and dornillos, hand-carved wooden bowls made from ash and used to make spoons and other kitchen implements. GASTRONOMY The gastronomy of Alcalá uses local products as its main ingredients. Its most prized dishes are made with the plants which grow wild in the countryside, and the game which is hunted there. Alcalá´s most famous dish is gazpacho caliente, hearty hot tomato soup thickened with bread. It is also known for its berza (vegetables stewed in meat stock), espárragos (wild asparagus) and tagarninas (the tender stems of the golden thistle). Asparagus and golden thistle are often used as a base for omelettes, scrambled eggs and other dishes. There are three specialties that Alcalá has long been famous for: pan cateto, torta de pellizco, payoya cheese. CELEBRATIONS Carnival Carnival in Alcalá de los Gazules lasts for three days and is celebrated in March. San Jorge In April we celebrate the feast of San Jorge, in honour of the town´s patron. St. Georges´s Day is 23 April but the festival is always hel over the weekend closets to that date. Each day there are two “bull-runs”. The Fair Alcala´s summer feria is celebrated is the last week of August, usually from Wednesday to Sunday. Romería The romería de Nuestra Señora de los Santos (Pilgrimage of our Lady of the Saints) is one of the most popular festivals in the area, dating bank to the 16th century. NATURAL SURROUNDINGS Alcalá is within the Alcornocales (Cork Oak) Natural Park, also known as the “Iberian Jungle” because of its unique ecosystems. Within the Natural Park we can enjoy a variety of paths or trails that allow us to explore its different landscapes. Only 3 km from the town, on the Benalup road, is the Aljibe Visitor Centre with its fascinating botanical gardens. There you can learn about the history and geography of the Park, the walking and cycling routes , and the flora and fauna of the area.
