ienvenidos a Vejer de la Frontera, hermoso pueblo blanco gaditano situado en lo alto de una colina a 190 m sobre el nivel del mar. Gracias a su especial situación, Vejer se nos descubre como un impresionante mirador natural hacia la campiña de la Comarca de la Janda y el mar. Su impresionante Centro histórico ha sido declarado Conjunto Histórico Artístico en 1976 y I Premio Nacional de Embellecimiento de pueblos en 1978. Además, desde 2013 nuestro pueblo pertenece a la Asociación de los “Pueblos más bonitos de España”.

Pero Vejer no sólo es su núcleo urbano. En esta guía os descubriremos su oferta más desconocida, la del “Vejer Rural”, un turismo sostenible en el que podremos disfrutar todo el año del perfecto tándem que hacen deporte y naturaleza: Rutas de Senderismo, Golf, Hípica, Surf, Turismo ornitológico, turismo etnológico, visitas a ganaderías, parapente... sin olvidarnos de las visitas culturales al Acueducto y Molinos de Agua de Santa Lucía, a la Ermita de la Virgen de la Oliva (Patrona de Vejer) en el núcleo Rural de la Oliva, o a la Fundación NMAC en Monteenmedio.

Thanks to this wonderful location, Vejer is a natural viewpoint of the región of La Janda and the Atlantic sea. Vejer’s histrorical centre was declarared Historic-Artistic Ensemble in 1973, and since 2013 belongs to the “Most Beautiful Villages from Spain” Association.

ejer de la Frontera se encuentra situada al Sur Oeste de la provincia de Cádiz, y se extiende sobre la región inmediata a la Comarca de la Janda, al oeste de la misma. Vejer se sitúa a 54 Km. de la capital, por la carretera Nacional A-48. Limita con el Atlántico, Conil, Chiclana, Medina Sidonia, Tarifa y Barbate.
En coche: Autovía A48 Sevilla – Cádiz. Salida 36 Autopista A – 4 Sevilla – Cádiz Crt. Nacional 340 Cádiz – Málaga En Tren: La estación de Renfe más cercana es la de San Fernando Bahía Sur, a 44 kilómetros.
El término Municipal vejeriego, que se halla en las estribaciones de la Bética, muestra una serie de Mesetas y cerros que se elevan visiblemente del resto del territorio, situado a pocos metros del nivel del mar. Entre ellos, las Mesetas de Algar y de la Muela o los cerros de Patria (186 metros), de Vejer (194 metros), de Buenavista (217 metros).... ejer de la Frontera is located in the South West area of the Province of Cádiz, in the west of La Janda County. Vejer is located 54km from the capital on National Highway A-48. It borders the Atlantic Ocean, Conil, Chiclana, Medina Sidonia, Tarifa, and Barbate. The city is built on a low hill, 194 m above sea level, which affords Vejer an impressive natural view.

The Municipal district of Vejer, located in the foothills of the Bética, includes a series of mesetas and hills that visibly rise above the land, which is just a few metres above sea level. Included among the aforementioned are the Mesetas of Algar and de la Muela, and the Patria (186 metres), Vejer (194 metres) and Buenavista (217 metres). Ruta Molinos de Agua / Watermills Route Se trata de una ruta de baja dificultad, que transcurre por un paraje de incomparable belleza. El sonido del agua, la exuberante vegetación, los restos del acueducto y las panorámicas de Vejer desde el mirador hacen de esta ruta un paseo de ensueño. Partimos desde la Iglesia de Santa Lucía y pasamos por los diferentes lugares de interés como son los molinos, el acueducto y las atarjeas. Podemos disfrutar de un maravilloso paisaje hasta culminar de nuevo en la Iglesia de Santa Lucía. The sound of the wáter, the rich and varied vegetation of the area, the remains of the Roman aqueduct and the amazing panoramic views of Vejer you can enjoy from this area will make of this rout an unforgettable experience for you. Ruta El Abejaruco / Abejaruco Route Esta ruta transcurre por el conocido cerro del Abejaruco a través del cual se pueden avistar unos impresionantes paisajes. Disfrutaremos de la arqueología, tecnología, fauna y vegetación de uno de los sitios más históricos de Vejer. El camino comienza en la carretera de Libreros y pasa por diversos senderos naturales. Entre los lugares de interés de la ruta cabe destacar el horno romano y la fuente manantial del Chorrillo, huertas trigales y antiguas eras. Desde el cerro del Abejaruco se divisa el mar, la sierra, la antigua Laguna de la Janda, la campiña, Santa Lucía, la Muela, los Parralejos, el curso del río Barbate y una bonita panorámica del pueblo de Vejer. It is a very attractive place where you will enjoy beautiful landscapes, Roman and Medieval remains and amazing views of Vejer ant its surrounding area: the sea, the mountains, the now drained lake of La Janda and the villages of Santa Lucía, La Muela and Parralejos. You will also be able to see the river Barbate and a wonderful panoramic view of Vejer. Start your itinerary in a path surrounded by canes on both sides next to the road of Libreros. Almost at ground level and coverd with some bars, you will find the clay oven of Chorrillo and some metres ahead the fountain. You will be delighted by wonderful views suchs as the sea, the mountains, wide cultivation fields, the villages of Santa Lucía, La Muela and Parralejos, the river Barbate and a great panoramic view of Vejer. Rural Ruta Ribera de la Oliva / Ribera de la Oliva Route El camino transcurre por un sendero natural. A lo largo de esta ruta podemos observar un precioso paisaje con abundante vegetación así como fantásticas vistas de Vejer y su entorno. Este sendero comienza junto a la depuradora y recorre los sinuosos meandros, desde donde se observan numerosas especies de aves y magníficas vistas de Vejer. El camino se aparta del río en el límite del espacio protegido y continúa unos 500 metros hasta la carretera y de nuevo vuelta al punto de salida. Puedes visitar la Ermita de Ntra. Señora de la Oliva como anexo al camino. Recomendamos no realizar la ruta en época de lluvias debido al desborde de la marisma. Longitud: 9 km Grado de dificultad: bajo Desnivel: bajo Tiempo estimado: 2,5 horas Inicio y fin: Depuradora In the course of this route you can observe a beautiful landscape with lots of vegetation, as well as amazing views of Vejer and its surrounding area. The itinerary goes along a natural pathway. The itinerary starts on a path located next to the water-treatment plant. Walk along this path for approximately 1km until you get to a crossing. Take the way on your left and follow the course of the river for about 5kms. While walking, you will be able to observe numerous species of birds and amazing views of the town of Vejer. This way branch off the river just next to the protected area, continues for approximately 500 metres and leads yoy back to the road and the starting point of this route. Also you can visit the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Olive. Rural Ruta Senderos Arenosos / Sandy Paths Route Route Salimos desde el camping Vejer situado cerca de la Barca, junto al Restaurante Los Arcos. Dejamos el coche a las fueras del camping y comenzamos la ruta por el sendero que lo bordea. Senderos Arenosos es una ruta que discurre entre monte bajo y llanura, entre bosques de pino y campiña. Es una ruta de grandes contrastes y desde donde además de abunda y variada vegetación, disfrutamos de maravillosas vistas de Vejer, la Breña, Sierra Graná y la Vega, por donde discurre el río Barbate. En esta ruta encontramos una amplia ornitología destacando el Ibis Eremita, especie catalogada en situación crítica desde 1994. Recomendable hacer esta ruta en primavera para que su andadura se convierta en una experiencia inolvidable. Longitud: 8 km Grado de dificultad: bajo Desnivel: bajo Tiempo estimado: 2 horas Inicio y fin: Camping Vejer. Sandy Paths is a route that goes through gente hills and plains, between pine forests and Green fields. It is a route with great contrasts, surrounded by a rich and diverse vegetation that allows you to enjoy wonderful views of Vejer, La Breña Nature Reserve. The mountains of Granada (as known as “Sierra Graná”) and the meadow of the river Barbate. During this route you will see numerous especies of birds, the most important of which is the Ibis Eremita, a specie that has been in critical situation since 1994. It is recomendable to make this route during the spring season so that it becomes an unforgettable experience for you. Ruta Las Quebradas / Quebradas Route Esta ruta discurre entre pinares. Alcanza desde las proximidades de Vejer de la Frontera a la carretera de Barbate. Su trazado es cómodo y sin grandes desniveles y nos permite conocer uno de los ecosistemas más representativos de la zona como es el pinar. Añadimos como anexo la oportunidad de adentrarnos en la conocida Cueva de los Quiñones. Corresponde a una antigua gruta en un entorno natural usada por antiguos ganaderos. Esta parte del trayecto es solo recomendada para senderistas en buena forma debido a su grado de dificultad. Longitud: 6 km Grado de dificultad: bajo Desnivel: medio-bajo Tiempo estimado: 1 hora Inicio y fin: Parque Hazas de Suerte This route will take you around one of the most representative landscapes in the Nature Reserve of La Breña: the pine groves. The itinerary, with some gente slopes, goes fron the vicinity of Vejer to the road leading to the town of Barbate. Also you can visit the Caves of Los Quiñones. It owes its name to the person who lived and kept his goats there. This part of the route has a high difficulty level, so it`s only recommended for walkers with good physical shape. Rural Ruta Molinos de Viento / Windmills Route Durante esta ruta podemos observar los siete molinos harineros de viento dentro de un marco paisajístico de campos de cultivos, playas y parque natural. Comenzamos el recorrido en la zona de San Miguel, en el Parque Hazas de la Suerte, donde se encuentran los molinos de San Francisco, San Antonio y San José. Desde aquí atravesamos el Parque Ferial de la Noria y nos incorporamos a la carretera de los Soldados. Bajamos por la Hijuela de Catalina Pérez. Subimos por un sendero que hay junto a la Venta de los Olivos y encontramos los últimos molinos (Cruz de Conil, Santa Inés, Márquez y Morillo) de vuelta al núcleo urbano. Longitud: 6 km Grado de dificultad: bajo Desnivel: medio Tiempo estimado: 2 horas Inicio y fin: Parque Hazas de Suerte This route allows you to see the seven flour windmills of Vejer and enjoy amazing views of cultivation fields, beaches and the nature reserve of La Breña. Start your itinerary at the Hazas de Suerte Park, located in the area of San Miguel, where you will find San Francisco, San Antonio and San Jose’s mills. Then, go through “La Noria” fairground and the path leading to the road of Los Soldados. Go down Catalina Perez’s way and begin an ascent next to the “Venta de los Olivos”. You will find the last four mills (Cruz de Conil, Santa Inés, Márquez and Morillo) on your way back to the town centre. Rural Ruta Hazas de Suerte / Hazas de Suerte Route Esta ruta parte de la pedanía de Vejer, Cantarranas, pequeña aldea de colonización, recorriendo una amalgama de paisajes muy representativos de esta zona de interior como son las vegas, campiñas cerealistas, los montes de vegetación iberoafricana y las mencionadas Hazas de Suerte. Las Hazas de Suerte del Común de Vecinos es una tradición histórica jurídica única en el estado español. Tiene sus raíces en el año 1228 cuando tras la expulsión de los musulmanes de Vejer, el rey Sancho IV, concede a los nuevos pobladores cristianos una serie de tierras o hazas para su sustento. Desde el camino también divisamos un marco paisajístico incomparable protagonizado por las Cuevas de Algar y la Campiña Vejeriega. Longitud: 7 km Grado de dificultad: bajo Desnivel: medio-bajo Tiempo estimado: 2 horas Inicio y fin: Cantarranas The itinerary on foot starts next to the church of Cantarranas (Vejer), on a way leading to the borough of Nájara. Walk along this way and, after going through a wind farm, you will be able to see the lands called “Hazas de Suerte”. The institution of the Hazas de Suerte is a legal-historical tradition unique in the Spanish State. Its origins date back to 1288 when King Sancho IV expelled the muslims from Vejer and granted the new christians settlers a series of lands (hazas) for cultivation. Ruta Buenavista / Buenavista Route A lo largo de esta ruta podemos observar un precioso paisaje natural así como diferentes lugares de interés: diversas fuentes, vistas a la costa, molinos harineros y amplia variedad en vegetación y ornitología. El camino comienza en el recinto ferial de La Noria y transcurre por diversos senderos naturales, incluyendo una antigua calzada de piedra. Llegaremos a la Carretera de los Soldados una vez completada la fase natural de la ruta y desde allí atravesaremos un último tramo urbano hasta llegar al recinto ferial de la Noria, principio y fin de la ruta. Longitud: 6 km Grado de dificultad: bajo Desnivel: medio Tiempo estimado: 2 horas Inicio y fin: Recinto Ferial During this route you can observe a beaufiful natural landscape as well as many places of interest: several fountains, amazing views of the coast, flour windmills, a rich and varied vegetation and numerous species of birds. The itinerary starts at “La Noria” fairground and goes along several natural pathways, including an old Stone road. Once you have walked along the natural pathways, you will get to the “Carretera de los Soldados”. Debemos destacar la importancia del Parque Natural de la Breña y Marismas del Barbate: (cuya titularidad está compartida entre Barbate y Vejer)

Vejer cuenta con 82 Ha. de marismas que están incluidas en el Parque marítimo terrestre de la Breña. Las marismas son fluviales y nos encontramos con una vegetación muy rica (lirios, sauces,...), sirviendo éstas de hábitat a una gran cantidad de aves. Las marismas forman parte de los últimos reductos de la antigua LAGUNA DE LA JANDA. La Breña se encuentra en la parte más occidental de la Cordillera Subbética, allí donde ésta se introduce en el mar, formando uno de los paisajes más hermosos de la costa gaditana.

It should be emphasized the importance of La Breña Nature Park and Barbate Marshes, rich in vegetation such as water lilies, threes… where all cain of birds find their habitat. The Marshes are a part of LA JANDA LAGOON, and La Breña Park is located on the western of the Subbética Cordillera, where it comes into the sea composing one of the most beautiful scenery from Cádiz.

Oferta Cultural de vejer rural
SANTUARIO DE NTRA. SRA. DE LA OLIVA Situada en la carretera Vejer-Barbate, a 5 Km. de Vejer. En esta ermita se puede ver la Patrona de Vejer, la Virgen de la Oliva. Este lugar antiguamente era una villa romana y mas tarde en la época visigoda s. VII, como aprovechamiento de esta, se construyo una basílica visigoda, exactamente en el año 674. Por tanto, la Ermita de la Oliva esta construida sobre el solar de dicha basílica, según fuentes epigráficas.

En ella se encuentra un monumento funerario con inscripción pagana que contiene restos óseos y cenizas del protomártir Esteban, de los santos mártires gaditanos Servando y Germán de las Sevillanas Justa y Rufina. La talla de la Virgen de la Oliva, es realizada por el escultor sevillano Martín Alonso de Mesa en 1596. Esta hecha en pino de segura (madera muy utilizada durante esta época),estofada y policromada.

Rural Porta el niño en el lado izquierdo, mientras que en el brazo, sujeta una rama de olivo, retomando la tradición más antigua. La túnica se recoge también en el mismo lado con pliegues sencillos, que caen pesadamente y que tienden a ensanchar la figura hacia abajo, por lo que asoman brevemente los pies. Este lugar se convierte en cita obligada de todos los peregrinos el día 7 de mayo, que se celebra una romería para recordar la conmemoración de la Virgen de la Oliva como Patrona de Vejer. ACUEDUCTO DE SANTA LUCÍA Se trata de un sistema de conducción de agua situado a 5 km de Vejer, convirtiéndose en uno de sus símbolos mas emblemáticos. Junto a este existen 7 molinos de agua del s. XVI que se utilizaban para moler trigo y obtener harina de los que hoy en día conservamos algunas piezas, como restos de los cubos, y algunas piedras de molino. En este siglo estos molinos eran propiedad de los Duques de Medina Sidonia que cobraban una renta para su uso. A principios del s. XX el Conde de Villariezo hereda Santa Lucia de la casa ducal y crea una empresa eléctrica, que abastecía de luz y agua a la población de Vejer, convirtiéndose en una de las primeras ciudades en contar con otros servicios en domicilios privados. Hoy en día esta empresa pertenece a la compañía Sevillana. El Núcleo Rural de Santa Lucía está declarado Monumento Natural por la riqueza del paisaje. Santa Lucia tiene una exuberante vegetación, debido a la riqueza del suelo y a la cantidad de agua existente, puesto que esta ubicada en la ladera de la Meseta de la Muela.
TORRENUEVA. PLAYA DE EL PALMAR Esta Torre se ha convertido en la seña de identidad de la Playa de El Palmar, situada a sólo 10 km del núcleo urbano de Vejer. Su función era la vigilancia de la costa. Éste tipo de torres fueron muy utilizadas durante los siglos XVII - XVIII, estando colocadas a lo largo de toda la costa gaditana, caracterizando la vigilancia ya que era muy probable la invasión de piratas y bandoleros. Se comunicaba con las otras torres mediante señales de humo durante el día y de fuego durante la noche. La playa de El Palmar ostenta la certificación Q de calidad , hecho éste muy significativo teniendo en cuenta el carácter rural de la misma. Este galardón, otorgado por el ICTE (Instituto de Calidad Turística Española y el Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio, viene a reconocer que contamos, dentro de la categoría de playas rurales, con una excelente carta de servicios (socorrismo, asistencia sanitaria, información turística, accesibilidad para discapacitados físicos, así como un servicio de mantenimiento

NMAC es una referencia cultural en el sur de Europa no solo por su colección, sino también por su programación educativa y cultural. HAZAS DE SUERTE. (CANDIDATA A SER DECLARADA “PATRIMONIO CULTURAL INMATERIAL DE LA HUMANIDAD” POR LA UNESCO Las Hazas de Suerte es una de las tradiciones más arraigadas en Vejer y constituyen un Patrimonio Comunal singular que hacen de Vejer un caso único en España. Hacemos un breve recorrido por su Historia: Debido a la situación fronteriza de Vejer, los pobladores del pueblo estaban en continuo peligro ante las amenazas de las tropas enemigas. Por este motivo a los vecinos del pueblo se les otorgó una serie de privilegios, por concesión de la corona, entre ellos el gozar y utilizar las tierras, aguas, montes, pozos... de la villa. En 1.307 Fernando IV le concede a D. Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán la villa de Vejer, otorgándole la jurisdicción del pueblo y el derecho a respetar los privilegios de los cuales gozaban los vecinos. Durante varias generaciones los Guzmanes respetaron dicho acuerdo hasta que en el siglo XV Juan Alfonso de Guzmán, se considera dueño de todas las tierras y no respeta el comunal de los vecinos. Fue entonces cuando el pueblo encabezado por Juan Relinque se subleva ante la casa ducal de los Guzmanes empezando entre ellos numerosos pleitos. Tras varios años de pleitos se resuelve el problema y se dicta sentencia a favor de los vecinos. En la actualidad el derecho de utilizar esas tierras comunes sigue en vigor y cada cuatro años se realiza un sorteo para el disfrute y beneficio de los vejeriegos.

NTRA. SRA. DE LA OLIVA SANCTUARY Located at Km. 5 on the road from Vejer to Barbate. In this hermitage you can see the patron saint of Vejer, the Virgen de la Oliva. This place was formerly a Roman villa and later in the Visigoth period – 7th centuries – a Visigoth basilica was built. Therefore, the Ermita de la Oliva is built on the site of said basili-
ca, according to epigraphic sources. In the hermitage there is a funerary monument with pagan inscription containing skeletal remains and ashes of the protomartyr Esteban, of the martyrs from Cádiz, Servando and Germán and Justa and Rufina, from Seville. The carving of the Virgen de la Oliva was made by the Sevillian sculptor Martín Alonso de Mesa in 1596. It is

Rural made of Pinus pinaster wood (a wood very much used in those days), dried in an oven and polychrome. The Virgin carries the child on the left, while she holds an olive branch, retaking the oldest tradition. The Virgin’s tunic is also collected on the same side with simple folds, which fall heavily and tend to widen the figure downwards, so that the feet slightly appear. This place becomes a must for all pilgrims on May 7, on which a pilgrimage is celebrated to celebrate the commemoration of the Virgen de la Oliva, Patron of Vejer. SANTA LUCÍA AQUEDUCT This is a system for water conduction, perfected later by the Arabs, becoming one of its most emblematic symbols. Next to aqueduct there are 7 water mills of the 15th century, used to grind wheat and obtain flour. Today we keep some pieces, like remains of cubes, and some millstones. Since those days, the mills were owned by the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, who charged a fee for their use. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Count of Villariezo inherited the Santa Lucía Aqueduct and created an electricity company, which supplied electricity and water to the population of Vejer, becoming one of the first cities to have other services in private homes. Nowadays this company belongs to the company Sevillana. The Rural Nucleus of Santa Lucía has been declared a Natural Monument due to the richness of its landscape. Santa Lucia has exuberant vegetation, due to the richness of the soil and the existing amount of water, since it is located on the slopes of the Meseta de la Muela plateau. Vejer. Its function was the surveillance of the coast. This type of towers was widely used during the 17th – 19th centuries; the towers covered the whole coast of Cádiz; invasions by pirates and bandits were very common. The Tower communicated with the other towers through smoke signals during the day and fire during the night. The El Palmar holds the `Q´ quality certification, which is very significant considering the rural nature of it. This award, granted by the ICTE (acronym of Instituto de Calidad Turística Española) and the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, comes to recognize that we have, within the category of rural beaches, an excellent service menu (lifeguard, health care, tourist information, accessibility for the physically disabled, as well as a daily maintenance and cleaning service) and a magnificent policy of environmental respect, sustainability and accessibility among other requirements. Our beach is ideal for water sports; therefore, it has enabled an area for surfing, also another fishing area, a sports area with beach volleyball net and playground for games and workshops. NMAC Located 5 km from Vejer, the NMAC Montenmedio Contemporary Art Foundation is a unique place in Spain where a dialogue between contemporary art and nature is established in perfect harmony. The objective of the NMAC Foundation is to invite international artists to carry out specific artistic projects that are in tune with the landscape through the study of the region, its history, geography and society. Rural NMAC is a cultural reference in southern Europe not only for its collection, but also for its educational and cultural programming. `HAZAS DE SUERTE´- (CANDIDATE TO BE DECLARED “INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF HUMANITY” BY THE UNESCO) `Hazas de Suerte´ is one of the most deeply-rooted traditions in Vejer and is a unique communal heritage that makes Vejer a unique case in Spain. We make a brief tour of its history: Due to the border situation of Vejer, the villagers were in constant danger before the threats of the enemy troops. For this reason the people of the town were granted a series of privileges, by concession of the crown, among them the enjoyment and use of the town´s lands, waters, mountains, wells.
In 1307 King Fernando IV granted Don Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán the town of Vejer, granting him the jurisdiction of the town and the right to respect the privileges enjoyed by the neighbors. For several generations, the members of the Guzmán family respected this agreement until, in the fifteenth century Juan Alfonso de Guzmán considered himself the owner of all the lands and did not respect the communal property of the neighbors. It was then when the town headed by Juan Relinque revolted before the ducal house of the Guzmán family beginning numerous lawsuits. After several years of lawsuits, the problem is solved and a sentence is passed in favor of the neighbors. Currently the right to use these communal lands remains in force and every four years there is a lottery draw for the enjoyment and benefit of the people who live in Vejer.
