ROAD TRIP No. 18

More golf than you can shake a 9-iron at. When it comes to championship golf, there’s no better destination than Alabama. Come play where the PGA TOUR professionals compete and see why Golf Digest editors picked two of Alabama’s golf resorts among their favorites. For starters there are the 468 holes along the world-renowned Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Stretching from the mountains in the north to the Gulf Coast in the south, America’s original golf trail opened 25 years ago and recently completed a massive renovation of its 26 courses. Then there are the many other impressive courses scattered across the state, designed by the likes of Arnold Palmer and Jerry Pate. Each with its own set of challenges, each with its own rewards. Plan an epic road trip to great golf courses across the state of Alabama.

I’m always blown away when I think about this magazine and the journey we’ve had. Boy, have we seen changes – like just last issue when we unveiled our brand-new masthead representing our evolution from Florida Golf Central Magazine to Southern Golf Central Magazine to, finally, who we are Golf Central Mag. With the digital version, and social media we are nationally branded, sporting our new tag: Turf -TravelPhilanthropy-Lifestyle! We continue to spotlight and cover more charity golf events than any other golf magazine in the country (and probably the world)! I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished over these nearly two decades and I feel mature as we round the bend into adulthood. HA! Back in the early days, we hosted a Golf Networking Soiree’ every month as a chance for our family of readers, advertisers and staff to get to know one another and conjure up new ways that we could all play together as we grow the game. As I mused on those thoughts it occurred to me – why not resurrect this idea for our celebration of 18 years of bringing this magnificent community together. There was only one hurdle: the anniversary was just days away! Classic Golf Central situation! But this is HOW WE ROLL! I began to marshal all our resources – and by that, I mean the loyal friends that have come our way through the years – to put together a NOW DAY SOIREE’. (Check out pages 14-15 for more pictures of the Soiree!) I reached out to Holly G from Golf Insiders Radio Show and asked if she could do the show remote from our event, she was all in. Next I called our old friend and former Golf Bachelor Steve Gunter, owner of the Historic Ballroom at Dubsdread, perfect venue, and awesome host. We not only had a location, we were transported to yesteryear in this classic Old Florida setting with open wood-beamed ceilings and a magnificent stone fireplace, not to mention the five-star service and food that Dubsdread and The Taproom are known for. The last ingredient would be the most important – the people that make up the family that we are! Email and Facebook invites to the close tribe members (plus a phone call or two to those stuck in the last century!). Before you know it, we had A Party Going On – or a shameless plug for Golf Central Magazine and the ever-proud Turf Life brand! Either way, a CELEBRATION planned perfectly on April 26, National Golf Day, Whew!

Tonyia, my daughter, included this.....AWWWE! I am super proud of my Mom’s many life accomplishments. It is remarkable that she has the grit to get through the ups and downs of the marketing industry today. What a feat…18 years of publishing a golf magazine! Do you (Cont. on Pg 15) 6

High Heat’s Fairway Wood and Hybrid Titanium Faces: Unmatched Precision For Lower Scores.

How many times a round do you select a fairway wood, hybrid or iron that fills the gap in your bag and then end up short of the green (and sometimes in a bunker) or on the green but so far away that you do not have a realistic chance for a birdie end up with a bogey? Then you say to yourself if I had only hit that fairway wood, hybrid, or iron better.

You can now change that with High Heat fairway woods and hybrids. They are “game changers” for amateur golfers because with its award winning deeper and lower CG they are easier to get up in the air; and are longer and, straighter. Unlike major brands that only have steel faces in these clubs, High Heat is the only brand in the world with titanium faces that enable amateur golfers to achieve about the same distance no matter where they

hit these clubs on the face, so they end up with more greens in regulation and closer to the hole for lower scores. Gary Van Sickle of Sports Illustrated named High Heat 3 wood and 3 hybrid the “Best,” of their breed and the 3 wood the “Greatest ever made because it is easy to get it up as high as a 5 wood and as long as a 2 wood and longer, straighter and more forgiving than all major brands.” Links Magazine “found High Heat’s fairway woods and hybrids with their titanium faces, to be longer, more forgiving, and the most significant new fairway woods and hybrids in 2017.” Golf Talk Live named them the “Best” in 2017 because “they perform as advertised and with titanium faces High Heat is the leading brand properly serving the needs of amateur golfers.”

The most popular belief for the Junkanoo Festival, is that it developed from the days of slavery. The influx of Loyalists in the late 18th Century brought many enslaved people who were given three days off at Christmas, while the masters celebrated the holiday. The slaves celebrated by singing and dancing in colorful masks, travelling from house to house, often on stilts. Junkanoo nearly vanished after slavery was abolished but the revival of the festival in The Bahamas now provides entertainment for many thousands.

The ‘Spirit of the Bahamas’ - John Waiting‘s Distillery is open every day. They will tempt you with a few samples... Stop on your tour of Nassau definitely puts you in a festival mood. Although not historically proven, it has been told the Lucayan Indians were the original inhabitants of the islands and resided in these caves. Later in time, it has been suggested that Pirates and their bounty found refuge by also hiding in these caves. Today, the caves are occupied by the “Buffy Flower Bat” (Erophylia Sezekomi) commonly known as the Fruit Bat, and is indigenous to the island.

Part of the Fort Fincastle Historical complex in Nassau. It was whew out of solid limestone rock by slaves between 1793 and 1794 and it is said that it provided a direct route from the fort to Nassau City. in memory of

Arnie's Army Charitable Foundation Announces Legacy Program Arnie’s Army was established in 1959 during The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, when an “army” of US soldiers followed the defending Champion, Arnold Palmer, around the course. Today, 58 years later, Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation(AACF) has announced the creation of a Legacy Program to support late golf legend Arnold Palmer’s lifetime mission of philanthropy, as the centerpiece of a nationwide re-branding campaign for the organization. The first three founding Legacy Partners in the new AACF program include longtime Arnold Palmer allies Hertz, MasterCard and Golf Channel/NBC Sports. Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation was established in 2015 to help fulfill Mr. Palmer’s lifelong passion of investing in the well-being and development of children and youth, supporting health and wellness initiatives and strengthening both communities and the environment. Today, the AACF has been entrusted to carry on the legacy of Mr. Palmer in marching toward a better tomorrow. While the iconic Arnold Palmer umbrella logo will still have a place within the organization, the refreshed logo, which features a reflec12

tive silhouette, captures Mr. Palmer as a golfer, and as the giving humanitarian he was for more than six decades. “Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation is celebrating a Life Well Played by driving forward on Mr. Palmer’s unmatched commitment to philanthropy, and a lifetime dedicated to making lives better around the world,” said Kevin Bingham, CEO, Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation. “We are excited to debut a fresh new Foundation logo as part of our nationwide re-branding campaign for Arnie’s Army, as well as unveil our Legacy Program that will help shape the future of the organization.” In 2017, and beyond, programs and

events that encompass the AACF will be supported through the newly created Legacy Program, which is a collaboration of key business partners whose values closely align with Mr. Palmer. The first 3 legacy partners truly reflect the ideals and vision of Mr. Palmer, highlighted by a longstanding partnership with MasterCard, a 35+year partnership with Hertz and Golf Channel/NBC sports, which Mr. Palmer helped establish in 1995. Bingham adds, “By leveraging new marketing assets, financial resources and creative programming, in collaboration with the power of our partners’ brands, the AACF will be positioned to expand our reach nationally and Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 2

continue to exceed our charitable goals well into the future. Backed by our three founding partners, we are seeking to align with additional companies and brands that support the philanthropy initiatives that are synonymous with Arnold Palmer’s lifetime of giving back.” For decades, Arnold and Winnie Palmer dedicated unwavering time and resources through their philanthropic endeavors, especially in Orlando, Florida through the Arnold Palmer Hospital For Children and the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, as well as in Arnold’s hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania through the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve. In creating the AACF, Mr. Palmer’s mission is never ending, and today the Foundation remains laser focused on sustaining the great work that has been established, while expanding the footprint to new communities across the nation. The AACF, which will operate as a united front in support of Mr. Palmer’s vision, represents the charitable components of several high profile events and programs, including golf’s prestigious Arnold Palmer Invita-

tional presented by MasterCard, the PGA TOUR event that takes place in Orlando every March. The non-profit tournament that Mr. Palmer founded was created to support philanthropic events that take place during tournament week, highlighted by Arnie’s March Against Children’s Cancer. Another event that is a core initiative of the AACF is the Arnold Palmer Cup. Now in its 20th year, the Arnold Palmer Cup is an annual Ryder Cupstyle tournament matching top male collegiate golfers from the United States against Europe. The 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup will take place at the Atlanta Athletic Club, from June 9-11. In co-founding the Arnold Palmer Cup in 1997, alongside the Golf Coaches Association of America, Mr. Palmer set out to create a platform for cultivating the next generation of competitive golfers, while driving the growth of golf at the amateur and collegiate levels. Since its inception, the Arnold Palmer Cup has not only become a launching pad for young rising golf professionals from around the world, but it has become a breeding ground

for many of the game’s future stars. In fact, the Arnold Palmer Cup has produced over 100 players who have gone on to earn PGA or European Tour cards, and can proudly claim 178 professional victories, multiple major champions and nearly two dozen Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup members. Bingham concludes, “There is no better way to honor the legacy of Arnold Palmer and take the Arnold Palmer Cup to a new level than by introducing a co-ed format for the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup, taking place July 6-8, 2018 at Evian Resort Golf Club in France. The reality of having men’s and women’s USA collegiate golfers competing side-by-side against their counterparts from around the world will showcase all that is great about the game of golf, and more importantly, it will speak directly to Mr. Palmer’s inclusive vision for the game.” For companies seeking to join the legacy program, please contact C. Kevin Smith at 407.876.3944. For more information on the Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation, or to make a donation, visit www.arniesarmy.org.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard 2017 tournament hosts (L to R) Curtis Strange, Peter Jacobsen, Anika Sorenstam, and Tom Ridge pose with a 13-foot bronze statue of Mr. Palmer. The PGA TOUR tournament is a signature fundraising event for Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation, and the statue, which overlooks the 1st & 10th tees, will be a permanent fixture at Bay Hill Club & Lodge. Host it and they will come! My words here can’t begin to express how overwhelmed I was at the love in the room that night. People from the Golf Attic days, supportive members from my home club at Tuscawilla, original staff members and our newest contributors. The brilliant contrast of our Senior Correspondent Rick Harris, AKA Old Reliable, and our Junior Correspondent 9-year-old Junior Golf World Champion Bella Dovhey. There were Village People, Wise Guys, Golf

Bachelors and world renowned Golf Course designer (thanks, Ron!). As he’s done so many times before Teaching Pro Jay Golden stepped up to the microphone as emcee (or was it Roastmaster?), masterfully drawing anecdotes and golf lies from the attendees. How proud was I when my handsome and charming 9-year-old grandson (and may I say amazing young golfer) Tyler took to the mic for the first time ever. My heart skipped several beats as I watched him, and I couldn’t help but think back to the many times when my son Preston (Uncle P) had teamed up with Jay in a similar way. What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? Where did you grow up?

Huntington, West Virginia

The funniest thing I have ever witnessed on the course is when a guy was teeing off and when he went to swing the entire seat of his pants ripped. He acted as if nothing happened and continued playing that way the rest of the day. It definitely made me laugh all day long,

Which group of people did you associate most with in high school?

What type of music do you prefer?

What is your favorite sport to play? Favorite to watch?

Anything that involves traveling! I hate to be in one place for too long. I love being outdoors, photography, and working out. Then I also love eating and binge watching Netflix

I’ve grown up playing sports my entire life, so most of my friends have always been athletes. Definitely basketball for both, but I only really like to watch men’s college basketball just because it’s so exciting.

What do you feel makes this club special?

The City Beautiful Holds A Historic Gem

Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced that the Granada Golf Course, located in the City of Coral Gables in Miami-Dade County, has been chosen as a featured course on the Florida Historic Golf Trail. “We are pleased to feature the Granada Golf Course as a partner on the Florida Historic Golf Trail,” said Secretary Detzner. “This golf course is the oldest operating nine hole course in Florida, and has been a part of the city of Coral Gables since its founding.” George E. Merrick, a visionary developer, who by 1921 had amassed

Gene Sarazen 1924 3,000 acres of undeveloped land on the outskirts of Miami, set out to create a planned community he called “The City Beautiful” – Coral Gables. As part of that vision, construction of the Coral Gables 9-hole golf course began in 1922. The course was initially built for the residents of Coral Gables and designed under the personal supervision of William Langford of the golf architectural firm of Langford and Moreau. On

January 15, 1923, the headlines from the Miami News read “FORE! The Coral Gables Golf Course Opens Today.” The 9-hole, par-36, Granada Golf Course features four sets of tees playing from 1,600 to 3,000 yards. Owned and operated by the City of Coral Gables, Granada Golf Course is the perfect place for residents, visitors and beginners alike, and Granada’s members take great pride in their facility.

“The City of Coral Gables is honored and proud to have Granada Golf Course chosen as a featured course for the Florida Historic Golf Trail” said Coral Gables Parks and Recreation Director Fred Couceyro. “The course holds a special place in our city’s history as the oldest continuously operating 9-hole course in the state of Florida. With newly renovated greens, tees and fairways, Granada Golf Course provides a wonderful golf experience for the entire family. As a municipal course that provides affordable access to golf, our mission is to create positive memorable life experiences for all of our visitors.” For more information about the Granada Golf Course or the Florida Historic Golf Trail program, visit Granada Golf Course, Florida Historic Golf Trail or Facebook.com/FloridaHistoricGolfTrail. Florida’s golf history, recognized as one of the oldest in the nation, dates back to the late 1800s when a number of early courses were created along with the development of railroads and hotels in the state. The Florida Historic Golf Trail is a collection of more than 50 historic, publicly accessible golf courses throughout the state that can still be played on today. Through the Florida Historic Golf Trail, golfers can play on courses designed by world-class architects and played by famous golfers such as Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Babe Zaharias, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Information about the history and current day contact information for each partner course can be found at FloridaHistoricGolfTrail.com. Find the historic course near you and Come Play on History! C

The Judge: Awaiting a “Jury” of Golfers Very few golf courses have a first-tee experience which has true ‘shock & awe’ value and can then maintain that standard of excellence throughout the round. One of those courses is on Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail. It’s The Judge Course, located in Prattville, on the outskirts of Montgomery. The Judge is actually one of three 18-hole courses at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail - Capitol Hill site. The other two are The Legislator and The Senator. The Judge, The Legislator and The Senator are top-notch venues which are attractive and affordable destinations for golfers planning their next stay-and-play getaway. And, with Alabama’s state

Capital Hill – Judge Hole #1 Many golfing pundits who have traveled up and down the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail feel that The Judge may well be the finest overall test on the Trail. When The Judge was designed, the overall goal was to create a fun and, at times, challenging course. It appears, though, that the overall expectations were exceeded. It’s actually a classic golf experience that will never go out of style. Simply put, if you love to play golf, you will love to play The Judge, regardless of your handicap. When you compare the playability of The Judge to the greens fee, it’s safe to say that golfers continue to get the best deal. When you approach the green on the short par four 18th hole, it’s a refreshing visual image: a raised green, flanked by a series of small waterfalls that serve as terraced ‘stepping stones’ for a bubbling brook, which is complemented by many blooming and blossoming shrubs and flowers. It truly is a beautiful end to a memorable round on a sensational golf course. It was for me and I know that it will be you, but you get to be the ultimate judge and jury…..when you play The Judge. An Island-Life Destination By Mike May

Since 1935, visitors to Georgia’s St. Simons Island have enjoyed one of America’s most luxurious and laid back island vacation destinations – The King and Prince Golf & Beach Resort (201 Arnold Road, St. Simons Island, Georgia; 912-638-3631; kingandprince.com). Located 60 miles north of Jacksonville and 65 miles south of Savannah, it’s conveniently located, just off the I-95 corridor in southeast Georgia. While this Joe Lee-designed golf course is one of the focal points of this coastal getaway, golf is not the only activity that keeps you busy while you are there. If you enjoy

playing tennis, there’s complimentary access to two Har-Tru tennis courts. If you enjoy spending time working out, there’s complimentary access to the exercise facility. If you want some true R & R, the Royal Treatment Cottage provides therapeutic massage treatments. If you enjoy swimming, you are spoiled for choice as there are six swimming pools – one of which is for children and one of which is a heated indoor pool, plus there’s a hot tub. If you enjoy making sand castles and beach walks, there are miles of beautiful beaches which are easily accessible to all guests. If you enjoy gazing out

at the Atlantic Ocean during any meal, the oceanfront dining at the King’s Tavern or poolside at the Ocean Terrace Grille combine great food with great views. And, for those who need to stay connected to the office, there’s compli-

mentary Wi-Fi in all the rooms and in all public areas, plus you have complimentary access to the Business Center. As for the golf course, Lee used his creativity to produce a true seaside spectacle as he designed 18 holes by weaving this course around towering live oak trees, across lakes and over lagoons. While all golf courses have a ‘signature hole,’ Lee actually built a group of ‘signature holes’ – four salt marsh island holes, which are accessed by 800 feet of bridges. The entire golf course underwent an extensive restoration and renewal in 2009. To accomplish the task, golf course architect Billy Fuller – a former course superintendent at Augusta National – was hired to enhance Joe Lee’s par 72-design. Fuller was successful and Lee would be proud of what Fuller’s team accomplished, if he were alive to see the fruits of Fuller’s labor. Not surprisingly, The King and Prince Golf & Beach Resort is one of the 20+ destinations on the Georgia Golf Trail. In fact, The King and Prince is one of the 18 founding members of the Georgia Golf Trail. The front nine features an attractive mix of somewhat short par fours, manageable par threes, and two doglegs (par five 5th and par four 9th). On the back nine, water comes into play on seven of the nine holes. The most imposing hole on the inward half is the Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 2

par five 14th hole – a double dogleg that is influenced by water on every shot, until you reach the green. The group of four salt marsh island holes are holes 12-15. Playing those four holes in par is a noteworthy achievement. The Practice Facility at The King and Prince is a destination unto itself – a 6,500 square-foot putting green, a 3,000 square-foot chipping green, and five target greens. It’s a great place to practice driving for show and putting for dough. The King and Prince Club opened in 1935, it was a golf course and a seaside dance club. On July 2, 1941, the

main hotel building, featuring Mediterranean architecture, opened to the public as the King and Prince Hotel. It was immediately praised for its modern features and magnificent ocean views. In 1996, the King and Prince Hotel was named to the prestigious Historic Hotels of America. In 2004, the historic structure was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Suffice it to say, if you crave an island-life destination, pack your bags for a trip to The King and Prince. Simply put, the atmosphere is what everybody deserves: luxurious and laid back.

A Palmetto State Pearl If you want

a hands-on Southern golf experience that is complemented by rolling hills, loblolly pines, and blooming dogwoods, go play the Mount Vintage Golf Club in North Augusta, South Carolina – just a 20-minute drive from the Augusta National Golf Club in nearby Augusta, Georgia. In many respects, the Mount Vintage

Independent #8 Tee Golf Club (www.mountvintagegolf. com; 803-279-5422) has many of the shared physical characteristics of its more famous ‘neighbor,’ but Mount Vintage is available, accessible, and affordable for outside golfers. Read what Golf Magazine wrote about Mount Vintage: “Nothing matches playing Augusta National……but if you’re looking for a course with a similar look, try Mount Vintage Golf Club.” As soon as you set foot on the grounds of Mount Vintage, the atmosphere is eerily similar to Augusta National’s – clear and simple signage,

well maintained grounds, first-class warm-up facilities, and a clubhouse that predates the construction of the golf course. The pro shop, the grille, and the locker rooms are built in such a way that they form a quasi-amphitheater which provides a cocoon-like setting for the practice putting green and the driving range. There’s also a perimeter patio attached to the clubhouse, complete with rocking chairs, which is a great place to unwind and relax. The clubhouse was originally called The Shaw House and was built in 1840 by Thomas Lewis Shaw. Six

generations of the Shaw family lived in the home before it was moved to its current location in 1995. In 19992000, The Shaw House was restored to serve as the clubhouse. Wings were added for the grille and locker rooms. The cart barn at Mount Vintage grabs your attention -- a traditional, old-fashioned barn that has been transformed from a home for livestock to a safe haven for golf carts. Mount Vintage features three different nine-hole layouts – Vintage, Chester, and Independent. Established in 2000, Mount Vintage has the look of a golf course that was designed by peers of Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie, the architects of Augusta National. Just as Augusta National tugs at your heart strings when you see it, Mount Vintage evokes similar emotions. The late Bryon Nelson referred to Mount Vintage as a “magnificent layout.” Another aspect of Mount Vintage which evokes memories of Augusta National is the presence of many stacked-stone bridges that crisscross the property’s many streams, creeks, and ponds. Those bridges will remind you of the Hogan, Nelson, and Sarazen Bridges at Augusta National. “Customers have told me often

Mt Vintage #3 that our customer service is outstanding,” says Jeff Marks, head golf professional at the Mount Vintage Golf Club. “The staff goes the extra mile to ensure that all guests and members have a first-rate experience every time they visit Mount Vintage Golf Club.” When you play the Vintage, your decision making will be tested because eight of the nine holes have either an uphill or downhill shot at one time or another. Straight-away par fours are non-existent at the Vintage. After you walk off the 9th green at the Chester, you’ll want to return to the first tee and play those nine holes immediately. Overall, the Chester is a memorable blend of dogleg par fours, risk & reward par fives, and captivating par threes. The Signature Hole for Mount Vintage is the 6th hole, a downhill, 537-

yard (from the back tees) par five that has a stream bordering a portion of the left side of the fairway and then crosses the front part of the green, catching any errant approach to the putting surface. Opened in 2008, the Independent is impacted by water on eight of the nine holes. The most scenic hole on the Independent course is the downhill par-three 8th hole. From the tee, a number of bubbling brooks feed to a pond which protects the front of the green. If you don’t swing with commitment, your tee shot will end up wet. Not surprisingly, the 8th hole has been named to PGA.com’s South Carolina Dream 18: Hidden Gems. So, can you envision that Southern golf experience that is complemented by rolling hills, loblolly pines, and blooming dogwoods? The Mount Vintage Golf Club awaits your arrival.

The 25th Annual Jeff Hayden Memorial Envirotron Golf Classic was held at World Woods Golf Club. With the generous support of the Turfgrass industry, the Seven Rivers Golf Course Superintendents Association has raised more than a Million Dollars ($1,000,000) specifically earmarked for Turfgrass Research. Proceeds from the tournament have been used for: renovation of Envirotron greenhouses and weather station at The University of Florida. To purchase field equipment including greensmowers, rotary movers, utility vehicles, top-dresser, aerifier, broadcast sprayer, generator, weed-eater, edger and sod cutter used for research purposes. Purchase of laboratory equipment including computer, microscope, root scanner, FLIR camera and crop circle device. Funded a position for the UF Rapid Turfgrass Diagnostic Laboratory 32

for two years. Contributed to funding of numerous research projects by various Turfgrass Associations includ-

ing FTGA and FGCSA. Co-Funded “effects of Colored Sand Topdressing on Canopy Temperatures” research at various UF locations. Needless to say, the Seven Rivers Golf Course Superintendents Association have been positive stewards of the money raised to make the most positive impacts on the golf course. Glenn Oberlander has been at the helm of this event for 24 years. A great “Thank You” and standing ovation was given and the new chairman Andy Jorgensen steps in to some very “Large Shoes” as he mentioned Glenn’s retirement from 39 years as a golf course superintendent… to enjoy himself with travel… and maybe some golf. If you haven’t had the opportunity to play in this event as a “Turf Life” lover… let’s plan on being involved next year. The event and Envirotron Laboratory is named after tournament co-founder Jeff Hayden, a longtime Superintendent and friend to many in the turfgrass industry who passed away unexpectedly in 2002. SUPERSpotlight: My career has passed thru areas of Hilton head Is., Myrtle Beach, Braselton, Ga. And now Young Harris, Ga. Several superintendents come to mind as I have taken the best knowledge of each superintendent to help me along with my career. Jerry Wells GCS of Wexford Plantation, Hilton Head Is., Gary Snyder GCS of The Haig Point Club on Daufuskie Is., Dave Downing CGCS of Wild Wing Plantation, Conway, Sc. and Mike Brisbois GCS of The Legends at Chateau Elan. All of these men have lead me to a long standing career at Brasstown Valley Resort. I am very proud to have been here in Young Harris, Ga. From the conception of the Resort to where we are now 24 years later and all of this could not have been done without all of the wisdom and instilled work ethic that I have learned from these four Superintendents. Since starting at Brasstown Valley in 1994, I have never forgotten how I have gotten here and the crew members that I have worked with. We were the ones

Steve Gonyea Golf Course Superintendent

that made everything click and helped made the Superintendent shine. So in 1996 I started a seminar/golf outing for golf maintenance staff members only, in Georgia and surrounding states. The Greens Care Appreciation Tournament was born. Twenty-Two years later the tournament still lives on. Many thanks go to all the vendors and sponsors who have supported the Tournament and who have donated many gifts and wearables for the invited maintenance staff members. Plenty of gifts, Bar-B-Q and loud music is a hit in the Brasstown Valley for the day. This is their day to have fun while this time the boss is back at work raking bunkers. In 2004, I wanted to encourage junior golf in our small community that is mostly hunting, fishing and football. TheTri-County Junior Golf Association, that fall, started after school tournaments for kids age 5-17. That year 32 kids entered the season and from that first group of kids, eight kids received scholarships to play golf after High

School in College. Since then a group of three girls have taken 2nd place in State High School 2A State of Georgia and the neighboring town another group of three girls were Class 1A State of Georgia Champions. There are five area courses that give the association free reign when hosting at their facility. I have volunteers from area clubs and golf enthusiasts that help marshal the kids with rulings and scoring. The program is still going strong with an average of 45 boys and girls. Each year new kids come along get excited, learn the game and most of all having fun!

The NEW Almost two years ago, Tom Dempsey, the owner of the 480 acre Saddlebrook Resort & Spa, 30 miles north of Tampa, was not happy with the condition of his two golf courses and extensive practice facility. Over time the 3 areas had slipped into unacceptable shape, and needed considerable attention to get back to the way things were in the heyday. Tom decided it was time to reinvest whatever was necessary to bring both the golf courses and the new Saddlebrook Golf Academy practice facility up to PGA and International Standards. Chip Lewison, an experienced specialist in returning distressed golf

courses back to prime time, was hired to work his magic on the Saddlebrook turf. Course conditions were an issue not only with the Resort’s guests, but also affecting the enrollment at the Golf Academy. In order to get good reviews from guests and return stay and play visits, the golf courses needed to be manicured to the fullest. The same was true of the practice facilities at the Academy. In order to attract new students all the facilities needed to be brought to championship form. Dempsey and Chip sat down, hashed over what Tom wanted and what Chip believed needed to be

done, prioritized, and came up with a game plan. The common goal was to physically and visually improve the 3 areas using additional manpower, new equipment, safe chemical applications and turf. There had to be a new mindset as well, so hundreds of hours were directed towards retraining the staff. In 2016 all the ingredients came together and the noticeable improvements began to show. Greens were reconstructed, irrigation and drainage were improved and tees were leveled. The project is not yet finished and is a work in progress, but the character and totally new look has improved the playability of the courses and practice facility. The management and staff at Saddlebrook know it is an ongoing process, and take great pride in the product they are now providing their guests and students. They are continuing in their plan to make Saddlebrook the best golf and practice facility.

Thanks to the thoughtfullyplanned resort design, the first tees of both courses and the 10th tee of the Saddlebrook Course are located at the center of the resort, as are both finishing 18th holes, a few steps from the meeting and guest rooms, recreational areas, restaurants and shops.

Palmer Course, Par 71, 6461 yards. Don’t be misled by the yardage. While many of the holes provide generous landing area, level ground is rare. The firm verdant fairways are contoured to resemble a New England rolling golf course. The small elevated emerald greens are framed by white-faced bunkers, azure ponds and gently swaying palm trees. Hilly lies and friendly Florida breezes make it a challenge to attain the accuracy needed to find the perfect number to the flag. The Tifeagle bermuda greens are firm, fast and undulating, allowing a well hit shot to hold on the surface. The rough is another matter; the longer bermuda grass grows sideways and entangles the club head when trying to hit the perfect approach. Miss the green and you could be looking at a high number. Several holes require length, but all reward finesse. Enjoy!

Water comes into play on almost every hole and 55 strategically placed bunkers give the course its teeth. The signature 18th hole, a testy par 4, 425 yard enhances ‘the back in time’ sensation. The drive must be played down an emerald ribbon between the stands of towering forests. Right at the landing area are three fairway bunkers awaiting your golf ball. The sunlight glistens softly off the deep pond fronting the Tifdwarf bermuda green. No matter your level of play, the Saddlebrook course provides a relaxing and satisfying golf experience that will keep you coming back.

The last several months have been busy ones for EREF. Our mission of advocacy for the green industry is being put to the test in Florida. Three counties in Florida – Lake, Seminole and Orange – are home to a beautiful natural spring system in the Wekiva River Basin (WRB). The WRB includes Wekiva Springs, an open spring with swimming, canoeing, kayaking and other related activities. The WRB has experienced some nutrient pollution and is subject to oversight by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), who seeks to engage all stakeholders within the WRB to improve future outcomes. The local governments of the three counties have all considered ordinances to limit urban fertilizer use within their boundaries in an effort to reduce nutrient contributions to the WRB. EREF and the green industry strongly oppose most versions of these ordinances as ineffective and as punitive to our stakeholders. In particular, ordinances which do not exempt licensed lawn-care providers and BMP-trained homeowners from the restrictions are simply unacceptable (golf and sports turf have exemptions that appear to be safe for now). Of the three counties, Orange

The Transition:

From caddy, to superintendent, to golf course supply owner, to making beer!

From left to right Glenn Zakany, CEO-President; Tyler Singletary, Head Brewer; Tanner Zakany, Tasting room Manager; Josh Perian, Managing Partner

Glenn Zakany Q & A Question: Where did you grow up? Answer: I grew up in Plantation, Florida which is west Fort Lauderdale. Question: Did you play sports? Answer: I loved sports and played them all, most really well, but unfortunately not great enough for the next level in any of them. Question: What got you into the turf industry? Answer: I guess that would go back to my high school days. A group of us would caddy for the celebrities at the Jackie Gleason Pro-Am (Now the Honda Classic) every February and after caddying for Don Shula my first year I decided to shoot higher for year two. When I heard President Ford was going to play a few months before the tourney, I decided to write him a letter and ask if I could be his caddy? Well a few weeks later I got a letter from the Secret Service asking if they could 42

interview me for the job. Well, I must have passed because I was the guy, at that point they told me I was the only one with enough gumption to ask for the job and the President thought it would be great publicity to give me the opportunity. So, in February of 1975, and after caddying that day with our little group (Jack Nicklaus, Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason and of course President Ford) and watching 40,000 people follow our group all day I was kind of liking this golf thing! To this day, I am still the only one to caddy for a sitting President in a PGA Pro-am that I know of and all at the age of 16. Question: What path got you to the superintendent world? Answer: Actually, my brother Scott heard about the turf grass program at Lake City Community College and I applied along with him and was excepted and spent the next three years in beautiful Lake City.

Question: What were your superintendent jobs before moving into sales? Answer: Upon graduating from Lake City my first assistant job was working for Mike Perham as an assistant superintendent at Boca Del Mar CC. After a year and a half there, I was hired as Superintendent at Fort Lauderdale CC, and of all places back in Plantation! After three years, there I moved to Operation Manager at Pine Island Ridge CC. After a short time, there I was asked by Max Brown if I would come to work at Liquid Ag Systems in a sales position and I accepted. Question: What is it like transforming from Superintendent to sales? Answer: It was hard at first getting out of the mold of running a golf course and into selling to them. But, the one thing that pushed me on that first year was all that I was learning. In one year, I leaned more than 3 years of college and 6 years in the superintendent world. Question: What do you mean by that? Answer: Well, when you are a superintendent you are kind of on your own island, occasionally you get off it and pick up a thing or two, but in sales and working for a well-respected golf course consultant (Max Brown) you pick up this knowledge every day. Seeing how 80 different superintendents do their job vs. a couple was fascinating to me and I was picking up information like a sponge. Passing along helpful practices to other superintendents and helping to develop our product line was very rewarding for me. Question: How did you get started running your own Company? Answer: After a few years working for Liquid Ag, I decided to try it on my own and Liquid Ag, Ag Resources and Golf Ventures were gracious enough to let me be an independent rep for them. So, in 1995, and as they say, (the rest is history) I started G to Z Turf Services, Inc. Then in 2003, Dave Barnes and Butch Gill approached me and we formed the Southeast Partners Company that went statewide and into Georgia. Question: Ok I get all this, but how does any of that get you into wanting to start a brewery? Answer: That is a good question that I am still trying to figure out so let me give it a shot. famous thing that ever happened in President Ford and his caddy, Glenn Saint Petersburg! So, for those that do not know, the very first paid commercial flight in the world took off January 1, 1914 from Saint Petersburg and flew to Tampa on a Benoist XIV seaplane that could take off and land on water. This plane was nicknamed the Flying Boat! At this time, it took four hours to take a ferry across the bay and over ten hours by car (remember in 1914 the car was just invented and there were no bridges across Tampa Bay yet and the roads were not very good) and the Flying Boat could make trip in 23 minutes. There is a my neighbor Bill got me into drinkreplica of this plane in ing craft beer and after many years the Saint Petersburg History Museum of drinking Bud Light it was no easy and the whole story is quite amazing. task. Then I started archives that show some of these helping him brew from time to time historic events from Saint Petersburg and I had the bug. At this time, a from early in the 20th Century. friend approached me to invest in Question: Where do you a brewery he was starting and after find a good brewer? almost agreeing, I thought to myself Answer: It’s kind of funny how close I could do this! So, with a son in law the craft brewery industry is to the (Josh)out of college that wanted golf industry. When people in the to run a brewery and a son (Tanindustry heard about us and with ner) ready to graduate college and us putting some feelers out we needing a job I decided to try this on my own and do it in Saint Petersburg. I am very fortunate that they have a huge passion for this, because it has been quite the process to get this rolling. Finding the right building and location took almost six months. After that, the permitting process and drawing up plans took another six months. And after thinking I bought the perfect building with a limited build out, we gutted almost the whole thing and started over! So, after almost 2 1/2 years in the making, Flying Boat Brewing Co. opened its doors on April 18th, 2017. Question: Where did the name Flying Boat Brewing come from? Answer: Well, as you know we are in Saint Petersburg and we wanted to tie into their rich history, so we Flying Boat Brewery thought why not tie into the most Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 2

had plenty of resumes to chose from. But, unlike interviewing golf course superintendents for a job, interviewing brewer’s is kind of fun. The most important part is tasting their beer along with looking where they want to be in five or ten years and how good a fit they will be. Did I mention tasting the beer! We chose Tyler Singletary from Southern Brewing in Tampa. He had already won some awards, his beer is great, he loved our story and where we want to be in ten years. Question: How many different styles of beer will you have? Answer: Our goal is to have 12 core beers with anywhere from one to three seasonal at all times. We should have all of these in place by late May. Question: Will you be getting out of the turf industry? Answer: Not in the near future! I still absolutely love the golf and green industry and love my job. Knowing that I am creating jobs and helping people accomplish their goals still makes me feel beyond good. I want to stay on this great journey, but just want to enjoy some great craft beer while I am on it! Ok now is your time for a plug and tell us where we can get some beer. We are Flying Boat Brewing Company located at 1776 11th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, Fl, about a mile north of Tropicana Field where the Rays play. 1,909 Holes Played in a Day of Golf! It was a great day for a golf marathon. Some 25 golfers made a day of golf recently at The Legacy Club. What was a stake – The Awareness Cup and Most Holes Played Award! Each golf marathon team played an average of 76 holes of golf for the day, with the grand total of 1,909 holes. Most important was the total dollars raised for Florida Hospital Cancer Institute and Ovarian Cancer Awareness. That amount came to a total for our event at $33,522.00. Both numbers are very impressive, but this golf marathon format is designed to become a series of marathons at several local courses each April. The Joan L. Kidd MD Fight for Life Continuum announced that the Joan L. Kidd MD Ovarian Cancer Awareness Cup has joined forces with Playing for a Cause Golf Marathon and Professional Golf Events for the event to become the Joan L. Kidd MD Ovarian Cancer Awareness Cup Marathon. “Our marathon committee was impressed with the Joan L. Kidd MD Fight for Life Continuum and the work they have developed for Ovarian Cancer Awareness. We have the same goal of bringing needed visibility to Ovarian Cancer Research that plays a critical role in the fight against ovarian cancer”, said Dave Walker, Tournament Chairman of Playing for a Cause. The team of Simcore received the Awareness Cup as the fundraising team with the most dollars raised in the event. and then returning to the starting line. Then it was the golfer turn. Leaving in a golf cart provided by On Top of the World... the golfers were off on an adventure to play 3 separate skills tests. “The Catch” - SNAG golf equipment that is used as part of the programming for the youth players. The frustration on scratch golfers’ faces was pretty amazing, as they found they trying to overpower this equipment, just wasn’t going to work for them. The event title sponsor was E-ONE. One of largest Fire Equipment manufactures in the country, with manufacturing in Ocala/Marion County. The First Tee of Greater Ocala, Executive Director, Jennie Weaver, reported a major success for the event. Donors supported 14 scholarships for new youth players. Special Silent Auction items brought in considerable revenue to the group and all-in-all, this was a very fun event to attend. Have to practice my skills with the SNAG equipment for next year, and maybe have a Golf Central Team involved. Sounds like fun!

The First Tee of Tampa Bay Inaugural Dinner & Charitable Live Auction Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club

hosted an evening of Who’s Who in Tampa Bay, great food and drink, an exciting live auction, and a fireside chat with Gary Koch and PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. Each year more than 60,000 children get hands-on, interactive golf experiences along with introducing them to The First Tee’s Nine Core Values. The evening provided an opportunity for the nearly 300 attendees to listen to the stories of a handful of those 60,000 children, illustrating the “real life” results of the program. The evening started with a casual conversation between Gary Koch and PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. Topics included – Will Tiger ever come back, The New Kids on the Block, Social Media’s impact on the game, The prospect of the PGA Tour creating their own TV Network, Proposed Rule Changes, The PGA Tour’s success in generating millions of dollars for charities locally and throughout the country. Mr. Mona-

han was very gracious in his comments regarding the turn-out at the inaugural event and how important the First Tee Program is in Tampa Bay, and throughout the U.S. Youth participants of the program highlighted the evening’s inspiring moments. Evin Jenkins, Jordan Marin and Jose Sanchez-Bello each shared what the First Tee of Tampa Bay means to them. Learning to play the game of golf is a benefit of their efforts, but the life-long lessons they learn from the program and the mentors they come in contact with will help shape who they will become as contributors to society. A variety of scholarships are provided to young men and women who exemplify the core values of the program. Unique golf experiences at destinations like; Sand Hills Golf Club, Pebble Beach, Kiawah Island, Oakmont Country Club, and Shinnecock excited the crowd during the live auction. Golf memorabilia, upscale local club foursomes, Cuban Cigars and an opportunity to have a character named after you in the next novel by Michael Connelly, were just a few of the unique and creative items available in the Silent Auction. More than $600,000 was raised for the First Tee of Tampa Bay.

The First Tee of Tampa Bay is operated by the Tampa YMCA. They partner with community members such as the Tampa Sports Authority, local youth groups, and several local golf facilities to offer year round programming. The program uses the game of golf to provide young people with the chance to develop life-enhancing values like confidence, perseverance and judgement. The First Tee shows children that golf is more than a game – it’s an opportunity to become the very best they can be. They are looking for more golf instructors, volunteers and supporters which will enable them to expand the programming. The creation of Luke Donald Collection wines began with the longstanding friendship between top-ranked pro-golfer Luke Donald and Bill Terlato, CEO of Terlato Wines. Whether on the golf course or in the vineyard, both men share a passion for excellence. Their friendship has resulted in a line of award-winning wines produced from top vineyards in Napa Valley and Luke Donald Carneros in California. Luke Donald is personally involved in the winemaking process to ensure that each wine reflects his own unique personality and style. Luke Donald Chardonnay is classically Burgundian in style and comes from a lovely sloped vineyard facing San Pablo Bay, the coolest part of Carneros. It is light gold in color with aromas of caramel, apple and citrus blossom, a clean minerality and restrained oak. Luke Donald Red is a traditional Bordeaux-style red blend, made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Sourced primarily from renowned vineyards in the Rutherford and Stags Leap District appellations, it displays classic Napa Valley complexity and balance, along with a lush texture and velvety tannins. Terlato Wines is the leading marketer of luxury wines in the U.S. To learn more about Luke Donald wines, visit www.terlatowines.com/new-wines/california/lukedonald-collection.

growing the game

As an athletic kid who grew up in upstate New York, I became an avid skier during those long, seemingly never-ending months of winter. The concept of snSowboarding emerged in the mid-60’s when a Michigan engineer named Sherman Poppen invented a toy for his daughters by fastening two skis together creating a board that could glide downhill. As the sport became more popular in the 70’s and 80’s, I remember skiing past people on funky looking boards that they strapped on to surf down the mountain. Initially, snowboarders were by no means met with open arms by traditionalist skiers – in fact, there was a sense of hostility between skiers and snowboarders back then. Many ski areas designated separate slopes for snowboarders. As the sport evolved and equipment improved, snowboarding exploded and became an official Olympic event in the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. A decade later, more than 8.2 million snowboarders existed in the USA and Canada – accounting for more than 30% of all snow sports participants. Many were under the age of 18 bringing a whole new generation to the slopes. 54

Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 2

The same phenomenon that happened to skiing is about to happen to golf, if Alex Van Alen has anything to say about it. Indeed, Van Alen may be the Sherman Poppen of golf. Van Alen is the inventor of FlingGolf and founder of PlusOne Sports, a dynamic new sport where players “fling” a golf ball on the course by using a lacrosse-looking FlingStick. A Philadelphia native, Van Alen grew up playing lacrosse in high school and has played golf his whole life. He started putting the two ideas together after buying a Jai Alai basket off E-Bay and throwing golf balls out of it for fun. He quickly discovered he was getting some good distance and able to shape shots. “My holy grail was to come up with something where I could throw a golf ball 200 yards accurately and spin it different ways,” said Van Allen. “After a lot of prototyping, I came up with the FlingStick.” The lightweight, one-half pound FlingStick has a head with a channel that is used to throw and shape shots on the course while a notch in the head is used to glide the ball (vs. stroking) on the putting green and into the hole. The basic techniques are easy to learn (sidearm, overhand, flop shot) and require a certain amount of finesse just like golf. FlingGolf follows the same rules (albeit simplified) and scoring as golf. Throw the ball from the tee marker, mark your ball where it lies in the fairway, and fling your next shot towards the green. A one-stroke penalty is incurred if your ball lands in a bunker, water hazard, goes out of bounds or is lost. Once on the green, simply place the ball in the putting notch and glide the ball towards the hole.

Owners Association formed a partnership in 2016 with FlingGolf to promote the sport throughout the United States. “FlingGolf is an amazing addition to the game of golf. And the FlingStick is just a blast to play with,” said Walt Lankau, former President of the NGCOA. Woodstone Meadows Golf Course at Massanutten Resort in McGaheysville, Va. was recently recognized as the “2016 FlingGolf Course of the Year.” PGA Pro and Director of Golf Operations Brett Mowbray has developed a program that encourages kids, friends and families to have a good time on the course - setting the bar for other courses and resorts to emulate. The resort has exceeded more than 3,000 rounds and $100,000 in added revenue since first introducing the sport in 2015 – not including pro shop, food and beverage sales. “People love FlingGolf and talk about the sport and resort to their friends. It has been seamless to adopt and roll out,” commented Mowbray. “Recently, we hosted a family reunion with 12 golfers and 12 FlingGolfers all playing together.” Developed as a hybrid of golf and lacrosse, FlingGolf has partnered with Major League Lacrosse to build off the lacrosse community’s growing participation in the sport. FlingGolf can be learned in a matter of minutes, plays much faster than traditional golf (if desired) and adds no wear or tear to the course. Tournaments and other competitions are in the works to grow the sport including a FlingGolf event prior to the 2017 MLL All-Star Game in Sacramento, Calif. this summer. “Our biggest challenge is convincing players that the vast majority of courses welcome FlingGolf, said Van Alen.

From the golf course perspective, FlingGolf can be easily integrated with traditional golf. No alterations are needed to the course and FlingGolfers can play side-by-side with traditional golfers. FlingGolfers get to experience the same game, feel included, and learn the essence of golf in a fun, non-threatening way. Golfers who have left the game- due to injury, frustration, or time constraints - may even be enticed to come back! “FlingGolf is growing rapidly across the country and internationally,” said Van Alen. “It brings the snowboard effect to golf courses where new, young players are creating more action, more rounds and more revenue. It’s exciting to watch a whole new generation having fun on a golf course alongside traditional golfers.” Orlando resident and Operations Manager for World Wrestling Entertainment, Jason Imbs and his family are passionate FlingGolfers. Imb’s 12 year-old son, Jake, “lives and breathes lacrosse” according to his dad and found FlingGolf on Instagram about a year ago. Now Imbs along with his brother, son and 10 year-old daughter Addison are hooked on the sport and love playing together as a foursome. “I’ve always enjoyed watching golf on TV and being out on the course – the fresh grass and the peacefulness - but I’ve never had the time to get good enough at golf, said Imbs. “FlingGolf has become such a fun pastime. We play nine holes about once a week and it gives me two hours of quality time with my kids.”

“You feel like a rock star walking around the course with a FlingStick, said Imbs. “People see it and instantly want to try it. I’ve never had any negative reaction.” The future of the fairway is here. There are many FlingFriendly courses in the Orlando area including Dubsdread, Twin Rivers, Grand Cypress and more. Interested in starting a FlingGolf program or buying a FlingStick? Go to www.FlingGolf.com or call Alex at 858-433-5464.

Parkland Buddies

Mike Richards Works with Parkland Buddy Sports This spring, South Florida PGA Professional Mike Richards and his staff administered their third golf program for Parkland Buddy Sports at Parkland Golf and Country Club. Parkland Buddy Sports, Inc is a not for profit organization that offers well-structured sports programs for special needs children and young adults. Regardless of the mental and/or physical diagnosis, the Buddy program welcomes children ages 4 to young adult. The sports programs consist of once weekly (Saturday or Sunday) activities and games. Each player is paired for the entire season with their own “Buddy” who in most instances is a typical student volunteer for an entire season. Every six week the students have the opportunity to learn a new sport from experts in the industry. As stated above the recent program at Parkland Golf and Country Club lasted six-week, from March 4th– April 8th, and featured eighteen individuals. The individuals participating in the program learned all aspects of game including the long game, short game along with a putting course. Richards and his staff have had the honor of working with Parkland Buddies for three years now, and each year they are humbled by those they able to teach. 58

“This program is changing lives, and I am fortunate to be a part of it. I hope that we have the opportunity to make golf an annual program within their curriculum” says Richards.

PGA HOPE- Changing the Lives of Local Veterans On April 17th, the South Florida PGA Foundation’s PGA HOPE Program at Alico Family golf held its final session and concluded with a graduation. Fifteen veterans participated in the 6-week

Skylee Shin and Anthony Muttillo the Skimp Belt Junior Championship at Indian Spring Country Club on the West Course in Boynton Beach, FL. Anthony Muttillo of Boca Raton started off by firing a 1-under-par 70 on the West Course and Indian Spring to give himself a one stroke lead over Boca Raton native James Nieporte. Jeffery Liss of Port Saint Lucie, Alec Quiroga of Davie and Kristian Fortis of Ocean Reef each fired one-over-par 73’s to keep themselves within striking distance of Muttillo. Sunday’s final round featured strong winds gusting over 30 mph with on and off rain throughout the day, making it extremely difficult to score. Liss made a strong final round push, firing a 1-over-par 72. Despite Liss’s strong effort, Muttillo remained smooth on Sunday by firing a 1-over-par 72 to capture the overall boy’s title. Liss would go on to take home the boys 13-15 age division title, while Quiroga would take home the boys 16-18 age division. The girl’s division featured some outstanding play during Saturday’s opening round. Lake Worth native Serina Combs started off round one by posting a 2-under-par 69 to take the early lead in the girl’s division. Jupiter native Sophia Dieter and Doral native Skylee Shin each fired 1-under-par 70’s to find themselves one stroke off the lead. Combs and Shin battled all round on Sunday, but 36 holes wasn’t enough to settle the event. The two ladies would enter a sudden death playoff after each posting a tournament total of 142. During the first playoff hole, Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 2

Shin managed to grind out a par to win the overall girl’s title over Combs and claim her 3rd victory of the year. Miami native Phoebe Beber-Frankel would take home the girls 13-15 age division title, while Combs would claim the girls 16-18 age division title.

Sara Bay Classic winner, Hannah Green

The Symetra Tour Takes On Sara Bay Sara Bay Country Club in Sarasota, Florida, played host to some remarkable ladies of the LPGA Symetra Tour. Founded in 1926 by legendary golf course architect Donald Ross, Sara Bay and their infamous, false front greens. This signature trait of a Donald

Jenny Coleman 60

Ross design, gave the ladies considerable troubles during the 2017 Sara Bay Classic. Just imagine playing golf at this historic venue. Bobby Jones played the course frequently, and Tommy Armour, referred to as “The Silver Scot” was the original head professional of the private club known

as Whitfield Estate Country Club. What an event closing to remember. Hannah Green (Perth, Australia) and Benyapa Niphatsophon (Bangkok, Thailand) battled the final 6 holes, finally coming down to the par 5, 18th hole. Tied at 1-under par beginning the 18th hole, Hannah Green, choose to lay up in a perfect spot for her short wedge shot to the green. Benyapa, Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 2

Shannon Fish

Kristy McPherson after hitting a booming drive, was going for the green on her second shot. The 3-wood hit just short of the green and ran through the green and came to rest on a down slope of thick grass. Hannah Green realizing that her third shot had to be great, focus her thoughts, took a deep breath and hit the 85 yard shot within 8 feet of the hole, forcing Benyapa to play a very tough shot off of the downhill lie. With the gallery surrounding the green to watch. Benyapa took the awkward stance, ready to hit the ball. With a gentle smooth swing, she looked up to see the ball in flight, only to realize that she hadn’t even touched the ball. At the point that the gallery realized what happen, you could only imagine that sound that echoed across the green. Gaining her composure, realizing that she now had to hole-out for any chance of the victory, Benyapa set up over the ball again and this time the ball came to rest on the green 10 feet from the hole. Missing the 10-putt and tapping in for a bogey, Benyapa had opened the door for Tour Rookie, Hannah Green. Having 2 putts to secure her par on the 18th hole and to win the Sara Bay Classic, Hannah created the excitement for the gallery, draining the 8-footer for a birdie and making her mark on as Champion of the 2017 Sara Bay Classic. Become a laser focused putter with

STEADIHEAD

With over 30 years of experience as an LPGA tour player and teaching professional, Bobbi Salmon has focused her golf instruction under one simple mantra: “SIMPLICITY.” The former longtime Orlando resident and inventor of the Steadihead – one of the top putting training products launched at the 2016 PGA Show - is committed to creating better, happier golfers, one less putt at a time. Salmon’s three basic steps for becoming a great putter are: 1. Align Your eyes over the Ball; 2. “See” your intended line; and 3. Rotate Your Head Down the Line. Steadihead provides all three. The high-powered laser device fits comfortably like a pair of lightweight glasses and can be worn alone or over existing eyewear. When you address the ball, the laser indicates when you are lined up with your eyes directly over the ball. However, many golfers struggle to rotate their head in a “steady” motion down the intended line. Steadihead’s laser trains you to “see” that line and rotate correctly down that line. Salmon spent 22 years as a teaching professional at Country Club of Mount Dora and Errol Estates Country Club. She now resides in Palm Desert, Calif. and teaches at Ivey Ranch Country Club. An accomplished playing professional, her career was cut short in 2003 when she was diagnosed with systemic Scleroderma, a rare disease that afflicts 300,000 Americans, causing hardening of the skin and internal organs. With true grit, tenacity and self-management of the disease, Salmon has continued teaching becoming one of the LPGA’s Top 50 Teaching and Club Professionals and is a PGA and LPGA Class A member. “As a teacher of the game, as well as a student, I understand how valuable it is to have another set of eyes to see what you can’t see,” said Salmon. “Steadihead gives you that second set of eyes.” Salmon’s unbridled teaching style and approach to golf focuses more on results than form making the Steadihead a very effective training device. “Steadihead will teach you how to PRACTICE with a focused purpose, LEARN to reinforce proper alignment and stroke patterns, and ENJOY the rewards of rapid improvement and lower scores,” said Salmon. Steadihead comes packaged in a stylish and durable case that clips to your golf bag. It can be used indoors or at the course. The laser safely and automatically turns off and reactivates when you look back down at your ball. For more information or to purchase, go to Steadingheadputting.com. TOURISM. It’s a break for everyone. Our more than 66 million annual visitors aren’t just good for the tourism industry, they’re good for everyone who lives here. Tourists pay over $436 million in sales taxes, they pay to improve our infrastructure and helped build many of the public venues companies and residents enjoy. They are a major reason that businesses not directly associated with tourism are thriving, too.

Over the years, tourist numbers have attracted the great dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities that exist here, and have helped create many other businesses who serve the needs of our growing metropolitan area. The bottom-line is that tourism creates jobs, businesses and a better quality-of-life for everyone. Including you.

golf fitness

If You Don’t Know Squat…You Should! We all know that our legs are important in the game of golf and to our overall health and fitness. Strong legs keep us stable, help our balance and can help us add more power to our golf swings. Strong legs will also help us get through life a little easier while climbing up and down stairs, getting in and out of chairs, and walk-

ing 18 holes, to name just a few. Many PGA and LPGA Touring professionals are now doing Olympic type lifting of weights to develop a stronger lower body and more powerful legs...especially deadlifts and squats. You don’t have to use a lot of weight to get some great benefits. Nearly every time I hear a golf swing instructor talking about “power” in the

golf swing, they describe using “the ground” and the legs to generate that power. Squats are an especially great way to involve nearly all the big muscles in your body while performing what it a very simple exercise. Proper form is critical to getting the most out of squats, and will help to prevent injury.

Key Points: 1. When starting out, only go as far down as you can with the confidence to get back up smoothly. 2. Distribute your weight evenly between both legs and feet. Approximately shoulder width apart. 3. As you squat, move your “behind” back and down, keeping your upper body as upright as possible. Don’t curl down over your knees. 4. Establish a very stable stance with your weight spread evenly from your toes to your heels. 5. Flare your feet out slightly as to not put additional pressure on your knees. Everyone’s hips are designed slightly differently. Place your feet in a manner that is comfortable to you with no pain throughout the movement. 6. From the squat position, push down through your heels as you come up…not through the toes.

Let’s Get Started! Here are 4 variations of the squat. These are simple (but not easy) body weight movements. Using a balance/fitness ball and a wall is a great way to start. The ball and wall add stability and the movement is isolated to your quadriceps. Start with a slight lean into the ball and push back into the ball as you move down. Push down through your heels and come to standing position. Do as many as you can. Try 3 sets of 10.

68

Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 2

This one is a simple standing squat. This will require a bit more stability than when using the ball and wall.

This squat is used by many trainers as an evaluation of your ability to squat and bring your hands and arms above your head. It is challenging, but it will help to develop a much more stable stance and extension in the upper body.

BONUS CHALLENGES

This squat is performed while using resistance from a power band or a weight machine. The “anti-rotation” aspect of this squat challenges your stability and balance big time. Create some resistance from the fixed point (either a band or machine) then, with arms out in front of you, squat while keeping tension in the handle. This is very challenging and will work many more muscle groups. Keep your back as straight up as possible. Push down through your heels to come back up and start again. Test out the amount of resistance before doing many reps. It is very important to perform this one from both sides to balance everything out. This last Bonus Challenge should be performed while using the ball and the wall. Bring your hands and arms up above your head while in the squat position. It is best to perform a continuous movement from down in front to above your head as you squat (Similar to the squat using the driver).

Perform these movements regularly (twice a week) to get the most benefit. Don’t go crazy on the reps the very first time out. You will feel the effects, including muscle soreness, on the second day. Not the next day, but the second day. So take it easy to start and build up the reps. Your strength, stability and balance will love you for it.

MLA Golf – This Alignment Technology is Redefining Putting

MLA Golf has developed a patented alignment technology that will revolutionize your putting. This is how it works…we all have internal guides to compare and analyze sensory information that control pace and direction of putts. MLA Putters worked with Dr. Lennart Högman, Ph.D. Dr. Högman has studied the perceptual process for more than 20 years and has performed studies that have revised the science between the human’s perceptions and the human being’s motor skills. He says: “An alignment system that acts upon multiple line detectors is a key to obtain veridical motion perception and a perfect in-line stroke surface.” The brain consists of 100,000 line detectors that are divided into a number of groups that help us decide what is straight. A simple line, for example, activates a group of detectors. When several groups of detectors are activated, these help the brain to make correct judgments. The MLA putters are designed to take advantage of these guides. MLA’s patented alignment technology activates the maximum number of coordinated detectors for optimal aiming judgment. The TOUR XDREAM putter from MLA Golf pushes everything to its limits. A putter performing at this level will make an impact not only on your game but on your putting as a whole. Perfect weight distribution with all benefits of greater roll and higher MOI including an interchangeable weight system along with the world leading U.S. patented alignment system will make this putter the most important club in your bag. The Tour Xdream is a 100% CNC MILLED and is available at www.MLA.golf.

Srixon Z 565 Driver

Srixon’s new Z 565 Driver is built for distance and control. Three key technologies work together to help golfers hit it farther and straighter off the tee. The new Power Wave Sole is engineered so the entire sole compresses at impact, acting like a spring for faster ball speeds. This is especially impactful on low-face shots. The new Stretch Flex Cup Face uses advanced manufacturing techniques to extend farther around the crown and sole to create a larger sweet spot for more distance across the entire face. Then the lightweight crown design repositions weight lower and toward the perimeter to offer more forgiveness and straighter drives time after time. The performance gains don’t stop with just the club head. The Miyazaki Kaula shaft uses Toray T100G carbon fiber to produce and exceptionally stable shaft profile with a high balance point. This makes the Z 565 driver easy to swing and extremely consistent. In all, the Srixon Z 565 delivers the most advanced innovation and best performance Srixon has ever made to help golfers hit it farther and straighter. www.srixon.com

ShoeTips Now Permitted Under The Rules of Golf

You may recall that we featured ShoeTips in our Product Showcase earlier this year, but they contacted us recently with some very exciting news that we felt we needed to share with you. “We’re very excited to announce the new USGA Equipment Standards decision stating that our newly designed base clips are Permitted under the Rules of Golf,” said Steve Lewis, Founder & CEO of ShoeTips. “Now you can wear ShoeTips on your shoes or display it on the BagTag for any round—whether you’re an amateur or a pro”. ShoeTips is a revolutionary new swing thought reminder system designed to help golfers of all skill levels master their mental game while they play. Golf’s greatest players, instructors and coaches, sports psychologists, writers, and scientific research on performance and the mental game all agree: Regardless of a person’s skill level, if you can focus completely on, and become fully absorbed in the task at hand, with nothing left over for worry or doubt, you’ll achieve a state of peak performance. ShoeTips helps golfers calm their minds and concentrate on the one or two thoughts they want to remember as they prepare to swing—boosting their confidence and enjoyment, and lowering their scores. Using ShoeTips is easy. Before you play, select two swing thoughts you want to remember from the 18 provided. Insert the labels securely into the two base clips and slide the clips easily, and snugly, over your shoelaces. The reminders will be in full view on your shoes as you address the ball. To use them on your golf bag instead, simply insert the base clips through the slots on our enclosed BagTag. Now each time you select a club you can remember what you had wanted to concentrate on and clear your mind of the thoughts that interfere with making a good shot. ShoeTips’ 18 familiar swing thoughts were chosen based on input from golf pros and sports psychologists. The labels are easy to change and organized into 3 categories—focus, relating to your mind, feel, to your body, and technique, to your swing mechanics. Can’t find the tip you want? Write your own custom tips on the reverse side of the labels with an indelible marker. For more information on ShoeTips visit www.ShoeTips.com. ShoeTips is available on Amazon.com for $19.99.
