Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe For most of us it truly is, “The Most Wonderful Time of The Year.” We should all understand and appreciate the depth of those simple lyrics. The “birds” are headed down for the winter to spend some cash on the warm and sunny courses of Florida AND the PGA Show and the Diamond Resorts Invitational, which is a star-studded blast. We will be getting together with our out of town guests for some friendly golf outings along with fairway family times and maybe some sibling rivalry rounds, as well. I’m trying to make a valid recommendation to all the golf industry while we have the opportunity to forage through this annual flock of revenue. Be the best and the brightest, friendly, warm and welcoming. Make your guests happy to be here; you can be fun and professional at the same time – look at how we do it – keep them laughing and make someone’s day. We Floridian’s, as business owners, have a unique situation with regards to all types of travel, hospitality, and the various outdoor leisure activities our wonderful state has to offer. Florida is home the largest and perhaps the greatest collection of golf courses in the world. We’ve been through the recent Hurricanes of Harvey and Irma and it appears we have collectively, for the most Greg Corbo, Dana Gordon and defending part, recovered in time for when Champ Mark Mulder at Tranquilo Golf Club at it really matters – when the Diamond Resorts Invitational Media Day world flocks to our Sunshine state. The only way to get better, get through it, is to surround yourself with people who believe in you. This past year I was reunited with an original Golf Central member, who literally helped me get the magazine started 18 years ago – former Managing Editor, Greg Corbo. For the last few months not only was he working at the prestigious Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., “Corbs” was prospecting every golf media outlet to send leads for feature stories and promotions to share with out readership. Greg has been on the road, in the air and on the Islands, which you can see on both social media sites, Golf Central Magazine, and Turf Life in print on pages 18, 30, 32, and 40. Golf Travel feature the DR, Gorgeous Cart Girl at DRI Media Day Tranquilo, and a Turf Life spread of photos on his Fall experience at Baltusrol. His heart in the camera lens and, his unique styles of putting the experience in words has been a boost for us heading into 2018. There’s comfort in knowing when you’ve worked with someone before, we both know what we’re gonna’ get. I’m very proud to roll with Corbs to all the events we’ve worked since his arrival in early December. We’re Everywhere….. We’re Everywhere!! It makes us more relevant, more present, and just more of what our supporters deserve. Important things are formed; your smile, your hope and your courage can be validated by an old team member. He’ll say, ‘let’s do it to it!” Watching him inspires me to expect more from myself. I’ve enjoyed the high-fives and fist-bumps over the last month – everyone, keep ‘em coming – positive vibes. “Your vibe attracts your Tribe!” Remaining positive in a negative situation is not naïve – it’s Leadership!

TPT Golf Graphite Shafts TPT Golf™ has released a new range of graphite golf shafts. Using ‘Thin Ply Technology’ (TPT) carbon fiber materials and a patented manufacturing process developed by its parent company, North Thin Ply Technology SARL, TPT Golf™ is setting new standards in shaft performance. The patent-pending manufacturing process enables golf shafts to be made with exceptionally accurate fiber placement in a highly uniform way around the shaft. This method creates a spineless shaft and overcomes the inconsistencies sometimes seen in shafts produced by the more-traditional table rolling methods. TPT shafts provide exceptional feel, leading to tighter shot dispersion, low spin and increased distance. North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT) is a serial innovator with a track record of producing performance-enhancing solutions in the high performance sports arena. The Swiss-based company began by developing a process for producing America’s Cup yacht sails, extended its portfolio to products used in the lightweight bodywork of F1 race cars, skis and snowboards, and then moved into materials technology found in satellites and luxury composite watches (Richard Mille). The record-breaking, solar-powered aircraft “Solar Impulse” also relied on NTPT-produced materials for its epic journey. www.tptgolf.com for more information. Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 6

Escape to the
Mountains Balsam Mountain Preserve is a lowdensity, conservation-orientated private retreat set on 4,400 acres in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville. Surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest, the Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Balsam Mountain Preserve was created as a “community within a park.” Of the many wonderful amenities offered, the Arnold Palmer Signature golf course stands out as perhaps the most distinctive feature of the
Boarding House at night community. With elevations approaching 3,800 feet offering dramatic views in every direction and a new state-ofthe-art practice range that will include several pitch-and-putt holes for casual recreation and honing members’ short game, few other courses rival. The soon to be added “golf park” concept is part of the larger new development, The Doubletop Village, currently underway. The Doubletop Village will include a Members’ Grille, Tavern, General Store along with multipurpose activity and event lawns, all designed by leading club architect Kuo Diedrich of Atlanta. A collection of 23 new single-
family turn-key cottages, designed by renowned residential architect Harrison Design, are in the design development stage and reservations will be available this summer. Balsam Mountain has engaged Arnold Palmer Design Company to design

PANAMA Panama is on many
avid golfers’ bucket lists for journeying through the Canal on a cruise ship – not for quality golf and lifestyle, but that is changing. The country has become a hotspot for expat retirees who enjoy yearround outdoor activities, especially golf and a high standard of living that doesn’t break the bank. If you qualify you get more than In the past the only attraction to Panama was going through the Canal - west to east in the AM - East to West in the PM - Average cost for container ships starts at about $400,000

As you venture outside the capital this blend of history and modern resorts and real estate ventures is evident all along the coasts. Panama is unique in that you can actually watch the sunrise over the Atlantic and set over the Pacific Oceans in a day.
Visiting golfers won’t be bored on a weeklong visit or as a retirement destination, and new golf developments are in the planning stages. Some of the highlights are – Club de Golf – Located only 11 miles from the city center – its mature and stately design has hosted the Web.com’s Panama Claro Championship since 2004. The current layout pays homage to the original layout built and designed in 1922 by workers on the Canal. It may surprise some that Panama has a rich history of championship golf, the former course hosted many Panama Open Championships whose winners included legends of the game Arnold Palmer, Roberto de Vincenzo and Sam Snead. This meticulously maintained Jack Nicklausdesign is one of Panama’s newest courses and a modern challenge of well-placed bunkers and menacing water hazards. It also is built to accommodate the today’s long hitters measuring over 3,00 yards from the tips. Lucero Golf & Country Club – The top-rated course in Panama is also one of the most desired expat retirement communities. Located at 3,000 feet in the northern mountainous region of Panama it enjoys more of a moderate year-round climate than Panama City and the surrounding beach communities. The course was designed by Michael Poellot and is known for its dramatic elevation changes offering spectacular and unique views of the Jaramillo and Talamanca Mountain ranges. Other stand out courses include the new private Jack Nicklaus designed Santa Maria Golf & Country Club in Panama City; Vista Mar Golf & Beach Resort, another Michael Poellot-design, managed by Kemper Sports and featuring a wonderful marina and to die for cuisine; Tucan Country Club and Resort - an expat favorite for its laid back atmosphere and welcoming membership; Mantarraya Golf Club, often cited as the best value course in Panama located at the Royal Decameron Beach Resort and is also one of the most scenic as the layouts weaves among water features and mature specimen trees and the BlueBay Coronado Golf & Beach Resort located on the Pacific Ocean only an hour drive from downtown Panama City. Panama has a modern airport that services one of the world’s longest flights from Dubai to Panama City direct. Golfers flying from the South have a much shorter route of only a few hours with reasonable airfare and minimal time change – if any. Copa Airlines flies direct from Houston, New Orleans, Orlando, Tampa, Miami and Washington, DC, allowing you to be on the links day of arrival. 25

Pulte Homes Raises Nearly $100,000 in a Single Day for the Children’s Home Network in Tampa Over $98,000 was raised by the West Florida Division of Pulte Homes at its second annual Building to Make Lives Better Charity Golf Tournament benefitting the Children’s Home Network in Tampa. Proceeds raised will sustain the Children’s Home Network’s Pulte Promise Center, a completely renovated vocational building made possible with the donations garnered from last year’s tournament and named after Pulte Homes. Proceeds will also help cover educational programs and initiatives provided for the children at the Network’s campus. The Pulte Promise Center is now used for continued learning by Kids Village, a residential treatment program, specializing in children ages 6 to 18, who are victims of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. “All of us at Pulte Homes are proud to be partnered with the Children’s Home Network,” Strickler said. “The enormous effort on the part of generous donors and contributors to this event is moving, and we are pleased to join hands with the entire Tampa community to assist these very deserving at-risk children and families through this incredible charity,” Strickler continued. Pulte’s partnership with the Children’s Home Network has resulted in over $175,000 raised within the span of one year.

cart girl
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Long Beach, California. I moved to Orlando when I was 10 years old. What is your favorite sport to play? Favorite to watch?
My favorite sport to play and watch is soccer. My parents were born and raised in Colombia so we grew up watching it! Can’t wait for the World Cup 2018!
Do you enjoy playing golf? Are there any golfers in your family? No golfers in my family but yes, I really enjoy play-
ing golf! The game can definitely be rewarding and maddening at the same time, but there’s something about hitting a good shot that satisfies the soul!
If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? If I had the luxury, I would go to school full time.
What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl?
When a group of golfers had me play a hole with them and my drive was amazing!! It felt so good, they were definitely impressed. You never know the outcome in golf so I was impressed and surprised myself.
What type of music do you prefer? Mmm, that’s a very hard
question! I think it depends on my mood but if I were listening to music while golfing I would listen to reggae because it soothes my soul.
Melissa e Aguirr What hobbies do you enjoy? I really enjoy watching movies, playing video games and of course, traveling!
Favorite comedian? Ali Wong. I watched her stand up on Netflix and I was literally crying.
Favorite type of movie?
I love romantic comedies! I’m a sucker for love.
Favorite charity to support? My favorite charity to support is Smile Train. No child deserves to suffer and face teasing and bullying because of their physical appearance. I want them to feel confident and know they are beautiful.

What would you like to do for a living? Being a golf pro is what I love, especially being at such an amazing place like Reunion, I wouldn’t change it for any profession. Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?
Going to the beach is always an option down here in Florida, but aside from that, going to see a baseball or football game. Whenever I go back to visit my hometown in the winter, skiing is my big addiction.
Tell us about your first kiss?
It was at a school dance in 6th grade, my first “crush” I guess you could call it. I can’t remember a time where I was more nervous.

What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? A golf club, a golf ball, and a pair of sunglasses What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? Golfers not filling in divots. There’s nothing worse than hitting a ball right down the middle of the fairway, only to end up in an unfilled divot.
Name the three most important things to you in this world. Family, God, and Friends.

A graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia, Moore received his turf degree while completing a fall internship at the King and Prince Golf Course, and then graduated with honors. His long career that began as part of the golf maintenance crew in 1995 brought him full circle back to St. Simons Island as head superintendent in 2000 where he has excelled throughout numerous renovations and golf course transformations. In an organization with approximately 400 golf courses throughout Georgia, the Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association selected Chuck

Moore for this year’s honorarium. ‘The Georgia GCSA award is given to an individual who has expressed outstanding dedication, care and commitment to the Georgia Golf Course Superintendent Association, the golf industry at large and his/ her community.’ The association has 735 individual members, one of the largest chapters within the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Chuck states “It’s a great honor for me to be recognized by my peers in the business. It was a total surprise and really gives me satisfaction to know that we, my crew of six, a mechanic and assistant…WE must be doing something right at our Club. I’m just so proud!” Chuck and his team take meticulous care of 90 acres of golf course land located at the north end of St. Simons Island. Chuck’s responsibilities include everything outside of the clubhouse: grasses, bunkers, tee markers, lake banks, trees, woods, fairways, greens, practice facility, iconic marsh island holes and overall property maintenance. According to Rick Mattox, General Manager and Director of Golf at The King and Prince Golf Course since 1990, “Chuck is the finest man I have known in my golf career. Receiving this lifetime honor and being recognized
by his peers that very few people get to experience, he wears the banner of his association with great pride along with his deep love of his family. We are all honored to know and work with Chuck”. photo by Greg Corbo

I’m enjoying a tropical adult rum concoction at Flippers, The Abaco Club’s beachside bar and restaurant, watching the sun go down over picturesque Winding Bay—a riot of pinks, reds and oranges in the sky melting into the many hues of blues and greens that comprise the bay on my first night back at The Abaco Club. It’s been more than a decade since I last looked out over this pristine bay and much has changed under the current owner, Southworth Development, but thankfully much more has stayed the same. Southworth has no intention to overbuild this slice of paradise as happens too often these days. Their goal is to enhance the members’ and guests’ experience with exceptional facilities and services while maintaining the laid back, unspoiled and uncrowded atmosphere that makes this destination so desirable. David Southworth and his partner Joe Deitch are visionaries having created some exceptional resort and real estate properties from the dirt up, but where they really excel is masterfully bringing existing properties to their full potential, which is what they have done and are continuing to do with ongoing investment at The Abaco Club. 36
One of the most obvious changes is that there is life back in the destination as evidenced by the lively and international convivial group at the bar with me. There’s a charming young couple from Scotland, another family from Ireland, members from as far away as South Africa and many more from the Southeast. Lucky readers of Golf Central can easily make it a weekend escape as the property is less than 200 miles from the Florida coast and serviced by a variety of flights from Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Miami as well as direct on Delta from Atlanta. The new
facilities at Marsh Harbour airport (15 minutes from The Abaco Club) feature not only a well appointed commercial terminal but a private aviation side that is constantly busy with planes arriving from near and far. The secret is out on The Abaco Club, a private international sporting club occupying one of the greatest tracks of real estate in the Bahamas. It is self-contained on a private peninsula. There are 2 ½ miles of pristine pinkish, sugar soft sandy beach, forming a crescent around the crystal clear waters of Winding Bay, the championship golf

course occupies the heart of the property and offers fantastic views over the bay and then climbs in elevation to a dramatic finish on a steep hill overlooking the deeper waters of the Atlantic. As varied as the terrain is the accommodation product. There are luxury multi-million dollar homes, charming 2- to 4- bedroom perfectly appointed self-contained cottages and wonderful beachside single-bedroom cabanas. Kristi Hull, Director of Sales, has been with the property since it opened in 2004. “The ownership by Southworth has made my job a lot easier.” said Hull. “The investments they have made by completely renovating and updating the dining facilities, beach toys and golf course, in addition to their dedication to making sure the infrastructure is exceeding the expectations of our home owners, members and guests alike—it has spurred
existing owners to reinvest in their properties, as well, to the betterment of everyone. Currently, the one-bedroom cabanas are being updated that are available for purchase from $400k per unit.” Hull, continued, “While The Abaco Club is private, we allow guests to vacation in our rental units for three visits before joining. Currently you do not need to purchase real estate to be a member and International Memberships Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 6
are a tremendous value with dues starting at $10k per year. Other categories of membership are also available and priced accordingly.” “The rental pool is very popular and for avid golfers one of our most popular rental cottages is Seabreeze—Darren Clarke’s 4-bedroom, home away from home named after his favorite libation. Located at the top end of the property just steps from the Cliff House dining room and picturesque infinity pool, spa and gym. His terrace offers unpanelled views across Winding Bay, Sugar Cay and the azure waters beyond offering the promise of great fishing. It also is a short golf cart ride (there are no cars on property) down the hill to the golf facility.” “Guests of Seabreeze quickly discover, while there is a collage dedicated to the Claret Jug, his trophy for winning the 2011 Open Championship, the photo
he cherishes most is the prominently displayed image of him and his prize Permit catch. Darren loves our championship golf course, but his passion when he’s here is the world-class deep sea and bonefishing.” “Another of our international golf professional homeowners, South African Thomas Aiken, loves to don his scuba gear and discover the abundant sea life in the waters just steps from his home. 37

welcoming lighthouse, the swimming pigs and the gentle green turtles.“ What I was most interested to see on my return was the improvements to the already respected championship golf course rated the top course in the Bahamas since opening and designed by the renowned architectural duo of Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie. I wasn’t disappointed. The routing and design were already world-class but what Southworth did was make the course not only visually more dramatic but also eminently more enjoyable to play by adding large waste areas lining the majority of the fairways. The waste areas are not difficult to get out of but prevent players of all abilities from spending too much time looking for and losing balls in the surrounding scrub and bushes. The course is characterized by elevation changes, especially on the challeng-
That is what makes The Abaco Club so enjoyable—bringing members and guests from around the world. There are so many activities on land and at sea for them to explore their passions and then meet back to share stories of the day.” “Our next major sports facility investment will be a marina facility. We recently purchased 20 acres just outside the property, adjacent to our members’ and locals’ favorite off-property restaurant and bar—Pete’s Pub, and their world-renowned art gallery and foundry. While there is a small marina currently there having our own marina will be a welcome addition for our members and guests that have boats. It will also allow members and guests to more easily take off for fishing expeditions and day trips to the neighboring islands, as well as, sightseeing highlights that include Hopetown and its candy cane-striped
ing closing four holes; lush fairways; stunning views and green complexes that are interesting, diverse and well guarded. And when you do reach the dance floor, you are rewarded with exceptional putting surfaces reminiscent of the undulating greens you’d find on the links courses of Scotland. The course is no “amenity”, it will again play host to the Web.com Tour’s, Bahamas Great Abaco Classic this January 18-24. The tournament will be televised on the Golf Channel and holes to watch are the signature 4th and 17th, both par 3s with spectacular backgrounds that will distract players from hitting exacting shots. The 4th looks out 38

to the turquoise waters of Winding Bay, while the 17th has the deep royal blue of the Atlantic as its backdrop. The tournament and your matches may well come down to the par-5 18th which demands an exacting tee shot to the fairway carved from the coral hillside and features a well-guarded—by deep bunkers— elevated green. Whether you are spending a weekend, a week or longer, you won’t tire of playing the course. Ever-changing wind conditions—velocity and direction—make each round a new experience. The golf facility also features a 3-hole short game course, putting green and driving range, in addition to hosting a variety of competitions throughout the year and offering excellent instruction and clinics by the PGA professional staff. I’m looking forward to returning to The Abaco Club during Daylight Savings. While the weather is great in the winter, visiting in the summer is just as enjoyable, due to the breezes, and the extra daylight gives me more time for having fun in the sun. You can use the wide variety of beach toys to explore above and below the waters of Winding Bay and the private Sugar Cay, walk and sun on the beach, indulge on spa services, work off the exceptional cuisine—especially the coconut French toast—in the gym, read a book poolside above the bay, playing a few sets on the tennis courts and generally have more time enjoy sunsets, cocktails and socializing with my many new friends. An Immersive Experience
From Golf Course to Whiskey Wonderland
Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. (F&R), today announced that it will soon open “Whiskey Ranch,” a 112-acre whiskey wonderland that will serve as the home for the premier artisanal distillery’s second location.
Then and Now Founded in 2010 by Leonard Firestone and Troy Robertson, F&R is 44
currently located in a revitalized preprohibition warehouse just south of downtown Fort Worth, Texas at 901 W. Vickery Blvd. This location will remain open for continued production and innovation, tours, and more. Whiskey Ranch sits on a historic golf course, previously called Glen Garden Country Club, where legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson began their careers. F&R has preserved the famous grounds, maintaining the golf course for charity and private events. When open, Whiskey Ranch will allow F&R to cater to its rapidly growing consumer demand by increasing production of its award-winning TX Whiskey and TX Straight Bourbon, all while maintaining the same quality, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.
Whiskey Ranch will provide a unique and immersive experience. A grand stone entrance and winding paved road leads visitors across a pastoral setting to the front of the property, which was intentionally designed to showcase dramatic views of Downtown Fort Worth in the background. The visitor center, or Ranch House, is the hub of activity at Whiskey Ranch. Guests will be led to a dedicated check-in area before arriving at the Ranch Store, a 2,000-square-foot retail area showcasing F&R products along with local goods from Texas artisans. Handmade caps adorning each bottle of TX Whiskey is an F&R signature, and a cap-making station will allow guests to create their own. The “Barrel Breezeway,” with barrel racks that mimic the rick house on property, leads to the Tavern and the Oak Room. The Tavern is available for tastings and features a large custom bar, comfortable seating, and historic golf memorabilia on display. Around the corner is the Oak Room, with a floor-to-ceiling tiered rock fireplace, sealed concrete floors, oversized round chandeliers with industrial pendant Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 6
lighting and plenty of natural light. The Oak Room is intended for corporate and private events of any kind and can accommodate approximately 175 people. Opening from the Oak Room is a twosided wraparound covered patio with additional seating for 130, called the Back Porch. This area features two outdoor fireplaces and views of the lake and newly designed 18th hole. Also outside is an open courtyard, which welcomes whiskey lovers with lush greenery and a firepit.
What Sets It Apart Whiskey Ranch will be the largest whiskey distillery west of the Mississippi, the only one on a fully functioning 18-hole golf course, and the first with a 50-foot copper column still in full view, along with the world’s first “doubler” designed with site windows for public tours. The site has four deep water wells, which will be used to craft the beloved TX Straight Bourbon. For more information, please visit www.frdistilling.com.

5Great Courses
If you live in Central Florida
you have probably had the thrill of taking visitors to Walt Disney World for their first visit to the world-famous theme park. The look on their faces and the joy in their voices is priceless.I had a similar task in November when I conducted the 2nd Annual Citrus Golf Trail Media Classic in the Sebring, Florida area. Most of the participating media had never been to Sebring, knowing it only as the home of Sebring International Speedway and a lot of orange groves. Their reactions to the golf courses, accommodations and restaurants of the Citrus Golf Trail were similar to those of first-time visitors to the Magic Kingdom. They were surprised, excited and anxious to see the next adventure. The Citrus Golf Trail is located in the center of Florida among cattle ranches and orange groves, offering a glimpse of what the state use to be before the arrival of Walt Disney just an hour away, and the glitzy resorts that dot each coastline. The relaxed and welcoming nature of the folks who live and work here is reflected in THE place to stay for a golf getaway in Sebring – Inn On The Lakes. Set in lush landscaped gardens, this relaxed lakeside hotel offers a true home-away-from-home feel, with a terrific restaurant and bar – Chicanes – that serves a free hot Dinner at Cowpoke’s Watering Hole in Sebring

Inn On The Lakes is where the Citrus Golf Trail Media Classic kicked off its three-day event. Owners Phil and Christine Hatfield welcomed the attendees as if they were long-standing returning guests, of which the hotel has plenty. Your first visit to his property will create a positive and lasting impression. The group then headed for its first golf course, Sun ‘N Lakes, where they were warmly greeted by General Manager Jim Kurtzeborn. Sun ‘N Lakes is a 36-hole complex that has hosted several major events, including the PGA Latinoamerican Qualifier every January and the Canadian Tour. The most highly touted of the two championship tracks is Deer Run, a classic Don Dyer design featuring length and challenging greens complexes. The 18th hole is a beautiful par three that requires carry over water into a large, tiered green. The Par 72 Turtle Run Golf Course is a Charles Ankrom’s design demands accuracy over distance. After a great day of golf at Sun ‘N Lakes, the attendees settled in at one of
the premier dining and nightlife spots in the Sebring area, Cowpokes Watering Hole. Whether you’re looking for a place to sit down for dinner or a nightclub with a unique feel, this is the perfect place to start your night off right. With a combination of entertainment, food, and operating hours that can’t be beat, you’ll get all the elements of the

Brian Stefan (High Heat metalwood) and Berndt Stoertebek (Zero Friction ProDistance GPS Glove) were prize winners perfect night out at one location. This restaurant has been making smiles and filling stomachs for more than 30 years. A classic Donald Ross design awaited the media on Day Two. Pinecrest Country Club was designed by Ross in 1926 and was recently restored so the Ross features were brought back to life. False fronts on many of the greens and bunkers that epitomize the Ross design theory are evident throughout the layout. There are no condos or homes bordering the fairways. This course was routed through beautiful orange groves and natural wooded areas. In the late 50s, Pinecrest hosted the first nationally televised PGA event, the World Championship of Golf. It featured big names like Sam Snead, Gardner Dickinson, Don January and the winner, Dr. Carey Middlecoff. The Pinecrest Hotel was a favorite getaway for celebrities from sports, entertainment and politics before being razed in 2007. Among the frequent guests were Babe Ruth, Al Capone and Franklin D. rant with a delicious story in downtown Avon Park. A retired police officer from Indiana grew tired of playing golf every day, so he decided to get into the restaurant business. In owner David Ailstock’s own words: “We all try really hard to give you a great dining experience. Most of the time we succeed, but if something’s wrong, give us a chance to make it right before you yell at us! We just want a good time too.” Eighteen East consistently offers a good time and great food, including the best burger that will ever pass through your lips. The afternoon round featured a true gem, River Greens Golf Club in Avon Park. Owned and operated by the Rodney Davis family, River Greens places great emphasis on accuracy and strategy, and features a drivable par 4 on the front. The final three holes on each side are as beautiful and challenging as you can find anywhere. And if Master PGA Professional Bob Forward is on property when you visit, be sure to spend a very entertaining few minutes with him. A gourmet meal at Chicanes in Inn On The Lakes awaited attendees following golf. This restaurant never disappoints, whether you are having sandwiches in the lively bar or a full-course meal in the restaurant that overlooks Little Lake Jackson. The final round of golf was played at Highlands Ridge Country Club’s challenging North Course, one of the club’s
two championship tracks. The North is designed by world-renowned architect Dave Harman who patterned it after Kauri Cliffs in New Zealand, which was recognized as Golf Digest’s Best New International Course of 2001. You get a links type feel when you play Highlands Ridge North. The Citrus Golf Trail Media Classic ended with an awards luncheon at the Chateau Elan hotel at the Sebring International Raceway, and a tour of the world-famous track. Chateau Elan features a wonderful dining and entertaining experience. If you’re there for one of the races, you’ll work up quite the appetite watching all those cars race around the track. Quench your thirst with a trip to the Hairpin Lounge. The media ended their trip with a thrilling close up view of a major race team testing for the 12 Hours Of Sebring held every March here. Sebring International Raceway is America’s oldest road racing track, with over six decades of storied history. The Citrus Golf Trail offers tremendous value, with memorable golf at unbelievable prices. Packages include accommodations at Inn On The Lakes, breakfast and a round of golf starting at $99 per day. Go to www.visitsebring. com and click on the golf option. You’ll be as surprised and delighted as the members of the media who competed in the Citrus Golf Trail Media Classic. 51

A Georgia Gem For golf enthusiasts in Georgia who are looking for a refreshing, exhilarating, and energizing golf experience in a natural setting, consider a stay-andplay golf outing at The Creek Golf Course at Hard Labor State Park (1400 Knox Chapel Road, Social Circle, Georgia; phone: 706-557-3006). Despite its negative-sounding moniker, visiting this state park is anything but laborintensive. Instead, it’s relaxing and enjoyable. Located just north of I-20, about an hour’s drive east of Atlanta, The Creek
Golf Course comes highly recommended. The Creek’s geographic locale has prompted Hard Labor State Park General Manager Steve Phillips to say that The Creek is “not close to anything, but not far from everything.” Not surprisingly, The Creek Golf Course is one of the 20+ destinations on the Georgia Golf Trail. The Creek is also affordably priced as Golf Digest Frugal Golfer has listed The Creek as the “4th sweetest deal in the USA.” In addition to being a fairly priced golf experience, the course also
shot to the green. Another memorable hole at The Creek is its Signature Hole – the 14th. Here, the water wheel and bridge that are located on this hole form a backdrop that make it one of the most peaceful and picturesque backdrops in the region. “The Creek at Hard Labor State Park golf course is one of those courses that has it all,” said Doug Hollandsworth, founder of the Georgia Golf Trail. “The Creek was stunning scenery, a great layout, and some tough par 3s. The Creek is just one of those courses you just want to keep coming back to play again and again. Gross admits that taking care of a golf course is a science and Bradburry knows his craft. “Bill is aware of weather patterns and knows when to apply chemicals to the greens and when to roll the greens, which have Champion Ultra-Dwarf grass,” said Gross. “As a result, our greens are true and smooth throughout the year.”

This will be his first Senior Player of the Year Award in the South Florida PGA. Mielke finished in the top-10 in the South Florida Senior Open (T-5), the Florida Senior Open (T-5) and the SFPGA Senior Section Professional Championship (T-7), but his victory at the Naples Beach Club Senior Open in October helped cap off an impressive 2017 season. Mark also finished T-4 at the 29th Senior PGA Professional Championship held at Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. In addition to his individual accomplishments, Mielke was on the winning teams for both the annual Challenge Cup and Senior Challenge Cup matches, having finished with an impressive 6-1-0 record during the two events. Team Golf Season Comes to a Close The 2017 Team Golf season has come to a close with the year ending Fall Championship at Weston Hills Country Club. Fifteen facilities from across south Florida competed in the season ending Championship for a chance to win the overall title. It was a tight race, but after the nine-hole competition the PGA Golden Bears from PGA National Golf Club took home first place. Team coach Steve Cox, PGA and his team of 8 junior golfers capped off a successful season by winning the Fall Championship. “SFPGA Team Golf is an integral dynamic of PGA National’s Junior Development Program. It’s capacity to grow the game is second to none. Congratulations to our PGA Golden Bears on their success and another championship season,” said Steven Cox, PGA, team coach of the PGA Golden Bears. In its fifth season, Team Golf continues to provide a fun and social atmosphere for young golfers to develop their skills at an entry tournament level. Since April, 66 total tournaments were conducted with six separate leagues and over 550 junior golfers participated this year. Over 50 PGA and LPGA Professionals, at both public and private golf facilities, helped form teams and served as the team coach at their facility. Teams are comprised of 6-12 players ages 6-14. Teams can be coed and the tournament format is a two-person scramble, playing 9-holes of stroke play. Leagues are separated by county and were located as far north as Indian River County, as far south as Miami-Dade County and as far west as Naples/Fort Myers. Thank you to all the PGA Professionals, host facilities and families who made Team Golf a success in 2017!

TOURISM. It’s a break for everyone. Our more than 66 million annual visitors aren’t just good for the tourism industry, they’re good for everyone who lives here. Tourists pay over $436 million in sales taxes, they pay to improve our infrastructure and helped build many of the public venues companies and residents enjoy. They are a major reason that businesses not directly associated with tourism are thriving, too.
Over the years, tourist numbers have attracted the great dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities that exist here, and have helped create many other businesses who serve the needs of our growing metropolitan area. The bottom-line is that tourism creates jobs, businesses and a better quality-of-life for everyone. Including you.

Merrick had massed 3,000 acres of undeveloped land on the outskirts of Miami, and set out to create a planned community he called “The City Beautiful” – Coral Gables. The crown jewel of the fledgling city was the Biltmore Hotel, which featured two 18-hole golf courses designed by Donald Ross. Ground was broken on the courses in 1925, and on January 2, 1926, Bobby Jones and Tommy Armour played a 36-hole exhibition golf match against Gene Sarazen and Leo Diegel to open the new MiamiBiltmore links. Jones and Armour won by a slender margin of one up. At the onset of World War II, the fed-

eral government purchased the hotel complex for use as a veteran’s hospital and released 18-holes of the golf complex to a private entity that formed the Riviera Country Club. In 1945, the City of Coral Gables leased the remaining 18 holes of the Biltmore golf course from the federal government at $1 per year. In 2007, golf course architect Brian Silva completed a comprehensive restoration of the course. Working from original routing plans, aerial photos and Donald Ross’ notes, Silva recreated the authenticity of the 1925 layout. Most impressive are the bunkers. Silva identified long-abandoned or grassed-over bunkers, excavated them to their original depth and created a wavy-edged, filigreed look along the top edges. Today, the 18-hole, par-71, Biltmore Golf Course features five sets of tees playing from 5,200 to 6,700 yards. The strength of the championship Donald Ross golf course is its superb collection of par 4s. They range from drive-and-pitch gems to dangerous holes like the 450-yard 17th hole, which calls for a solid drive followed by an unerring approach over water to a bulk-headed green. “The Biltmore Golf Course is honored to be selected as the Florida Historic Golf Trail’s featured course for December 2017,” said Bob Coman, PGA Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 6
Bobby Jones at Miami Biltmore 1928 Director of Golf for The Biltmore Hotel Golf Management, LLC. “Our 1925 Donald Ross designed layout annually hosts the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship, is home to the University of Miami Woman’s Golf Team and is headquarters for the Jim McLean Golf Schools. The Biltmore Hotel is a National Historic Landmark and offers luxurious accommodations and amenities to guests visiting Coral Gables. We look forward to continuing our rich traditions and serving the golfing needs of members and guests in the years to come.”

Founders Club at Pawleys Island– Tried and True!
The Founders Club at Pawleys Island, about 20 minutes south of Myrtle Beach on Highway 17, opened for play in 2008 and attracts golfers because of its unique appeal: sand instead of long, unforgiving rough. The course was designed by Thomas Walker, former lead designer for Gary Player Design, on what used to be the Sea Gull Golf Club, a Gene Hamm design that dates back to 1966. Like much of the surrounding area, the original course was relatively flat. Walker changed the look and feel of the course by moving around over a quarter million cubic yards of dirt. The $7 million renovation project included a new Lowcountry-style clubhouse, overlooking the 18th green. Since Walker’s redo in 2008, Founders Club has received numerous accolades including one of the 30 Best Courses You Can Play in South Carolina by the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel in 2009 and again in 2011. Founders Club was also named Myrtle
Founders Club Golf Course #12 Beach Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association in 2011. As a result of all the renovation work, Founders Club features sloping fairways, bunkers, elevation changes, and mounding, lots of mounding. Overgrown rough has been replaced with waste areas filled with native beach sand, pine straw and grasses. Also sprinkled throughout the course are Lowcountry wetlands, towering live oak and pine trees and azaleas which, when in bloom, add to the beauty of the layout. You won’t find many traditional cart paths out here, instead what you have are waste areas that are in play. Another feature that sets Founders Club apart from other courses in the area are the Emerald Bermuda greens. This unique strain of grass withstands
the summer heat and requires less water than other grasses; it also has less grain. Five sets of tees allow players to choose their level of difficulty. From the Black Tees, Founders Club plays 7,007 yards with a course rating of 74.2 and a slope of 142. Big numbers from the Back tees. Mere mortal golfers will find that the White tees (6,394 yards/71.2 course rating/133 slope) will give them all the golf they can handle and allow them to leave with a little dignity. Seniors move up to just over 5500 yards while the Ladies will enjoy a length of 4,805 yards. Since you know your game better than anyone, picking the right set of tees will maximize your enjoyment. With such a premium on land in the area, there is no formal driving range. Instead there is a hitting net which can accommodate 6 players at a time and a practice putting green where you can also hit some chip shots.
Memorable Holes
Founders Club Golf Course #10 64
Number 2: Par 4, 390 yards (White Tees). Standing on the tee, this long par 4 looks intimidating, with water all down the right side and trees and a waste bunker down the left. The landing area is generous, so take advantage of it. Favoring the left side of the fairway will take the water out of play and give the best angle for approach into a large green with a long, narrow bunker on the right and a small deep bunker about half way back on the left. Keep it on play to the green and you could end up with a low score. Number 3: Par 3, 166 yards (White Tees). Because of the shallow depth of the green, distance off the tee is crucial. It’s all carry over water to an oval green set on an angle. A deep bunker in front Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 6
Founders Club Golf Course #1 guards the right side. If the bunkers behind the green come into play, you weren’t listening when I talked about distance control. The green slopes gently back towards the water. Number 9: Par 5, 493 yards (White Tees). For most, Number 9 is the first hole you see when you enter the property; it’s the one right along the road. Most golfers will comment on the way the sand slopes down into the pond, making it a great looking hole. That being said, if you want to post a low score on this hole, it’s best to avoid the pretty sand and water! This hole can best be described as a narrow strip of grass surrounded by sand – and water. You’ll need to carry your tee shot over a large waste bunker and on to one of these narrow strips of grass – aka fairway. The landing area opens up, however two bunkers on the right and infringing water on the left come into play if you hit it too far. The fairway bottlenecks and then opens back up in the landing area with the right-side waste bunker creeping in and the water on the left. Success so far will leave a short iron into a large green protected front right and in the back by large penalizing bunkers. Par is a good score here. Number 12: Par 5, 491 yards (White Tees). Number 12 looks like a hole straight out of the yardage book of a Scottish golf course with a row of pot bunkers down the middle of the fairway. Most of the time, you want to hit the ball off the tee as far as you can down the middle of the fairway; on this hole it’s not advised! Most players will come up short of the bunkers and have to deal with them on their layup shot. Unless you’re a long ball hitter, you’ll want to hit your layup shot short of the pond and then play your approach shot about 120 yards to a large, receptive green with a deep bunker front left. The fairway is framed on either side by a waste bunker. Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 6
A challenging but doable hole. Number 16: Par 3, 135 yards (White Tees). What makes this hole interesting is the deep pot bunker in the front middle of the green. You’ll play your tee shot over a small waste area on to the green. There’s really no bailout area here and you’re going to need to fly it on, so be sure to take enough club off the tee.
Last Word: Founders Club is a difficult but fair golf course. The waste bunkers and pine straw that have replaced the rough are a welcomed change; it’s easier to find your ball and hit out of a waste bunker than some gnarly rough. In fact, every hole has a sand challenge of some sort. There are only a couple of holes that require a forced carry, even for the ladies. Founders Club appeals to just about any type of golfer, whether you like to grip-it-and-rip-it or play it conservatively. Hit the ball as far as you can every time or layup and lay back and play it more strategically. You can play it differently each time. Some players feel that Founders Club plays tough. If you feel the same way af-
ter a few holes, consider playing one tee forward from where you normally play at another golf course. If all else fails, the PGA professionals at Founders Club are always happy to give you lessons and help improve your game. Start by hitting some balls into the net to get warmed up and then head out for some real-time on-course learning. Whether you’re coming down in the spring as part of a larger group or renting a home in the area during the summer months and just want to get away for a few hours, Founders Club welcomes you as a guest. And, if it’s been raining for a few days – as it’s known to do during the summer – odds are that the course is open and playable; it’s one of the best draining courses in the area. If you play a variety of courses in the area, you’ll find that Founders Club is one of the more unique, challenging and fun courses in the area. The Founders Club at Pawleys Island is a proud member of the Waccamaw Golf Trail. Dancing with the Stars & Practicing Golf My wife Vicki and I are big fans of the incredibly popular TV program Dancing With The Stars. One reason is that the competitors, many of which have never really danced in their lives, are expected to learn a new dance every week. Then they have to perform that dance in front of a live audience, three critical judges and the many millions watching on TV. No pressure right? In a previous article, I wrote about “Deep Practice” for golf. I pointed out that in his book The Talent Code, author Daniel Coyle is quoted as saying, “Greatness Isn’t Born, It’s Grown”. Deep practice, when done properly, works to develop any skill you attempt. This includes the skill of the golf swing to the skill of dancing a dance that you never performed before, to the skill of performing a perfect squat in your workout. A substance called Myelin is the material in the brain that insulates the neurons to speed up the signals from the brain to be able to perform better. The more you practice, make mistakes, and correct them immediately, the more Myelin will develop and speed up your progress. We were watching the show last week and it was the semi-finals. The couples had to perform two dances on the same night to get the highest score to make it to the finals. As I watched the dances, it dawned on me. This is a prime example of how Deep Practice works in developing a golf swing. Where we as golfers miss the mark is that we don’t recognize the mistake, correct it then start over again from the beginning. Usually we don’t even know 66
To develop a skill you must do three things: 1. Attempt the activity (skill). When you make a mistake, Stop! Do not go any further. 2. Make the correction in your mind and start again from the beginning. (This works much better if you have a coach or teacher helping to point out the mistakes) 3. Continue this process every time you make a mistake. Correct it and go back to the beginning. This is critical. what we did incorrectly so we keep swinging away until we hit a straight one. I am sure you have been playing with someone who is playing poorly, then stripes one right down the middle of the fairway. When that happens in my group, I immediately ask what he or
she did to achieve that great shot. The usual answer is, “I don’t know”. Golfers, listen up! In order to effectively and consistently develop a skill, you have to know what you did…good or bad. I will continue to be amazed at the skill that the dancers develop by making mistakes, correcting them and starting over. I can see the Myelin bulging around those neurons now. I request that the next time you practice anything, apply these principles. It won’t be easy, nor will you see results in minutes or maybe even days, but with dedication and commitment, a skill will be born. Deep Practice is also is a great way to a better and more effective workout. Performing ONE repetition WELL is more productive then performing a dozen poorly. For more information about Deep Practice, search YouTube for “The Talent Code” and “Deep Practice” Let the Myelin be with you!
