Going to the 19th Hole Been in the bunker, hit some awesome shots, got lucky on some holes and overall had a great round. I excel on the 19th, even after an exhausting 18. An 18 that challenged every ounce of my moxie, every bit of faith and was a test of strength that is more than anyone could imagine. So, when you start questioning “what is” or “what was” even if you’re just explaining to a friendly, curious, “probably polite” ear, you project more of the same into the future. If you give more thanks than you ask for then you will believe less in your own power and more in others. If you insist that it’s hard and that you are lonely, you’ll find that it is and you are. You can choose to focus what you like about it, who you love in it, and how very lucky and how prolific the whole idea has become. I never get tired of those who see the magazine and are impressed when they ask, “So YOU own this magazine?” in such disbelief that I have to quickly say, “Well I have some crazy amazing dedicated tribe members (writers, photogs, etc).” These include: “Old Reliable” (aka Rick Harris) who is still old and still reliable. After 18 years my brilliant rock and source of stability <laugh> remains Editor in Chief Shannon Coates who elevates us every issue. The magnificent Melahn Cable, our designer, crisp and clean, and always having faith that it’s going to get done. Our Georgia partner, Doug Hollandsworth. Our dynamo, Deb Shuck. The ever-joyful Jenn Jolly. Classy and sophisticated, Elisa Gaudet. Our “rainbow” writer, J.L. Quebbeman. The mighty Mike May. Maker of names, shooter of pics, original tribe member Greg Corbo. The lovely loving Linda Williams. Handsome cry baby, Bob Bolton. Security and super model, Eric Rasberry. Forever respected, Fred Seely. Worldrenowned international travel writer, Dove Jones. Golf and my personal “fitness” coach, Jay Golden, PGA. And who can forget “Gref” (aka wise guy) Greg Wise. To those who aren’t mentioned I’m sorry I didn’t forget you….I actually forgot you…<laugh>. Lastly, without the support of the plethora of prestigious associations who support us by sharing our message with their members we wouldn’t have made it for 19 years. So, to all of you - see you on the 19th hole. I’m grateful and humbled that you have all stuck by my side. The next round is on me… 2009 North Florida PGA Amateur of the Year 6

In Celebration of Golf
By Dove Jones Every champion has an oil painting in the clubhouse Arnold Palmer the first winner of the tartan jacket in 1969
The Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by Master Card & The RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing
Arnold Palmer never won as many majors as Jack Nicklaus, nor did he win as many tournaments as Tiger Woods – but ‘The King’ undoubtedly won more hearts and did more for bringing people to ‘The Game’ and ‘The Game’ to the people than any other golfer. It was easy for Mr. Palmer, although

with Mark McCormick he became the first poster boy for sports marketing and product endorsement, earning more money off the course than playing professional golf, Mr. Palmer genuinely loved golf and he genuinely loved people. Whether on his beloved hometown course of Latrobe CC, or at Bay Hill his winter residence – Mr. Palmer was always visible playing golf with friends. He was also approachable to those “friends” he didn’t know yet – when Mr. Palmer met you he shook your hand and looked you in the eye and made you feel as if you were the most important person in the room. While security has tightened and the merchandise tent has grown, fortunately the event still has the atmosphere of an intimate backyard BBQ. Mr. Palmer always had a twinkle in his eye and an easy laugh – a fierce competitor, he also loved the social aspect of the game. That love of all things golf – competition and camaraderie – defines the API. It may feel like a garden party to the fans, but it is one of the PGA TOUR’s most coveted titles and its past winner list is a who’s who of the game’s top players including – Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Fred Couples and this year’s deserving champion, Rory McIlroy. Mr. Palmer never won his tournament but he was the first winner of The Heritage tournament in the fall of 1969 at the then newly christened Harbor Town Arnold Palmer Invitational

Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, SC. Just as the API celebrates the man that brought golf to the people with his “army,” The Heritage celebrates the game itself and America’s first recognized golf society and course dating back to 1786 in neighboring Charleston. Like the API, The Heritage has an intimate feel and exudes southern hospitality not only in the backyards of the homes surrounding the course but just next door on the decks of boats docked in the yacht basin, and the ‘fleet’ anchored in Calibogie Sound just off the 18th fairway. Over the past 50 years, the tournament has changed sponsors over time but never changed its focus to celebrate the history and traditions of the Scottish game. Its unique motto of “Get Your Plaid On”, a nod to the Scottish tartan, is evident on a wide variety of merchandise and this year even the iconic candy cane striped lighthouse was wrapped in red plaid. Like the API, the relaxed party atmosphere just off the course may mask the fact that the champion’s tartan jacket is as prized as any trophy on TOUR and the winner’s circle starting with Mr. Palmer is a stellar list including – Greg Norman, Golf Central • Volume 19, Issue 1
Sir Nick Faldo, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, David Love III, Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar, to name a few. The pros love spending time on Hilton Head and in Sea Pines as much as the patrons and most bring their families to enjoy the resort for the week. It is one of the rare venues where missing the cut on Friday doesn’t always mean a ticket home just after the round. A few years ago, while the tournament was between sponsors and on the brink of being lost it was the pros as much as local and state support that insured it would see its 50th anniversary and beyond. Best of all these two tournaments while enjoying record attendance still allow spectators to get an up close and personal view of their golf heroes. Both courses are relatively flat and easy to walk with convenient concessions stands and libation stations along the fairways. At The Heritage the neighborhood flavor is accented by local products such as Bloody Point Bloody Mary mix and Island charities manning their benefiting stands. At the API Mr. Palmer is in evidence by his trademark colorful umbrella providing welcome shade over picnic tables and his favorite Ketel One and signature “Arnold Palmer – iced tea and lemonade – being poured throughout the venue. With many tournaments, especially the majors becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to attend, these two tournaments, at least for the time being, are testaments to the fact that golf is an every person’s game to be enjoyed whether watching or swinging from toddlers to grandparents, beginners to professionals. Women's Golf Day– Building Community Before Competition Elisa Gaudet, WGD Founder, talks to the Golf Channel’s Morning Drive about how community has been at the heart of the success of Women’s Golf Day In a few weeks Women’s Golf Day (WGD) will take to fairways, ranges and simulators across the globe for the biggest celebration of women and girls golf in the world. Elisa Gaudet, founder of WGD, is on a mission to spread the word about the third annual event on June 5th. Just this week she spoke with Lauren Thompson at Golf Channel’s Morning Drive to explain how a passion project ended up creating a global golfing community. With gender equality and equal
opportunities for women firmly on everyone’s agenda, not just in golf, WGD was inadvertently launched at the right time and Elisa has found that people were ready to fully embrace the WGD concept, she explains, “Look at everything else that is going on the world, women empowerment, women supporting women, it (WGD) was super timely and what we have created is a community and I think that it is this community aspect that is so powerful, more than the golf.” The community extends beyond the golf course where she Lauren Thompson & Elisa Gaudet

also highlighted the social media coverage of the day which encompassed the community spirit, everyone having fun and celebrating women and girls golf. Elisa believes that one real issue preventing many women getting into golf has been a feeling of intimidation. Elisa spoke about how WGD has always encouraged participants to bring a friend commenting, “Women move in packs!” It has been the mixing of people that have never played golf with those who have which she credits as a “game changer”. “Golf has always been about community, but often women feel intimidated around golf. WGD is breaking down those barriers, getting women onto the golf course and acting as a platform to unite and showcase all the people and venues driving participation and welcoming women and girls part of the global golfing community.” Elisa also touched on her personal battle with breast cancer since the 2017 WGD, talking about how although she found the diagnosis difficult to come to terms with, over time it was the WGD platform and the community that it had created which has helped in her recovery and made her want to tell people her story. The Mantra that Changed Karen S. Carter’s Career
The first time Karen S. Carter golfed, she was as prepared as she could hope to be with all the necessary equipment stuffed in a purple golf bag and the clothes to match. She carried it and her characteristic optimism out to the golf course with the rest of her. It was a business event, her playing partners composed of a combination of her colleagues and clients, out on the Medinah Golf Course in Illinois, which has been the setting of several PGA championships over the years and serves as a doozy of a first course for a beginner golfer like Karen. Still, she was unphased until it was her turn to swing. When she first stood on the tee box and looked out over the fairway, the flag was nowhere to be seen. Intimidation started to set in, her playing partners watching, waiting, for her to take her shot. But she could not make a move. It was not until her dear friend and colleague—who thankfully was a member of her foursome—whispered, “Just take a swing.” Karen’s professional career can be boiled down to a handful of moments just like this, where the helping hand of a boss or colleague has helped guide her down an intimidating, new path. And now, as Dow’s first Chief Inclusion Officer, Karen makes it her mission to ensure all people feel like they have a place on Dow’s team. It is a story all too familiar to Karen, who has spent over twenty years with the chemical company. Born and raised in Witchita, KS, Karen was the baby in the family with two older sisters who have always been there to support her. After her father’s sudden death when she was twelve years old, she was raised by her
18
mother—her hero—who instilled in her a sense of resilience, determination, and her perpetual optimism. Since starting her career with Dow during her freshman year of college, she has not always felt as comfortable in her job roles. That is until the day that a boss of hers went out of her way to make sure she knew she was a crucial part of the team. “I think most people have a ‘defining moment’ in their careers,” Karen said. These “aha!” moments, when everything starts tumbling into place, come in all sorts of ways—a discussion with a friend, a moment of quiet, solitary reflection . . . anything. “I wasn’t looking for mine when I got it,” Karen admitted. “But I knew the instant it happened that what just occurred was something important.” She was still rather new with the company at the time, having interned for a while before making her mark and earning a full-time position in the sales department. One day, one of the leading female executives in her company took her to the Dow executive wing. Karen could hardly believe where she was,
passing by the massive offices until they stopped in the behemoth that was the CEO’s office with an invitation for Karen to take a seat in THE chair. “That might not sound very exciting,” Karen confessed, “but for a twenty-something, young, black female in corporate America, it was perhaps the most exciting field trip I had ever been on.” Reluctantly, Karen sat down in the CEO’s chair, her boss across from her on the other side of the desk and then heard three words that changed her mindset toward her job and eventually shaped her entire career. Karen was told: “You belong here.” Suddenly, Karen knew she had pos-
sibilities, not only with Dow; she had the possibility to do anything that she set her mind to because that barrier—the uncertainty about her place in the corporate world—was no longer the loudest voice in her head. That moment was the catalyst to Karen’s success with Dow and helped elevate her to her current position where she is chiefly in charge of maintaining Dow’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. “It’s not only the right thing to do, but it’s the smart thing to do,” Karen added. “Team Dow must reflect the world we compete in today and will compete in tomorrow.” This move doesn’t come from trying to jump on a corporate trend or fit into any demographics numbers game. Dow, with Karen’s help, knows that employees are more content with their jobs and bring better, more competitive ideas to the table when every person knows they belong and they feel safe to bring 100% of themselves to work 100% of the time. For Karen, there is power in invitation; but there is also just as much to be said for the power of allowing yourself to accept that invitation in the first place. “We don’t always control the invitation,” Karen said, “but we do control the RSVP. And accepting means we are both willing and able.” Even if that means embracing something new and unfamiliar—like Karen did with golf. As someone who has spent her entire career at different levels in the business world, Karen knows firsthand just how much business is done out on the golf course. And even though she wasn’t—and still doesn’t claim to be—a very good golfer, that never stopped her from accepting the invitation to go. “I knew that if I didn’t, there would be something I would miss,” she said. “We must be present in these dialogues, which means we must be present on the golf course.” Like business, golf requires preparation, practice, patience, and perseverance. And when facing a new chapter in life, whether that be applying for a new job you’re not sure you’ll get, moving to a new city you’ve never been to before, or playing golf, it’s important to be open to change. “When one door closes, another one opens,” Karen explained. “But we must be prepared to walk through it with confidence. But even with all of that—even when you step up to the tee box, and you are unable to see the flag—you still have to take a swing.”

Nicklaus Academies Global Growth Continues

force in providing consistent and effective instruction in the majority of developing golf markets. This beautiful game that so many of us take for granted continues to gain momentum throughout the world, especially Southeast Asia. The adult population in this region are fairly avid players with new golf course construction still on the rise, but it is the junior market that is exploding and creating golf’s sustainable growth. From Indonesia to Japan, India to Brazil, Hong Kong to Mexico, the increase in the number of junior golfers entering the game is staggering. And not just entering the game, but excelling on the international stage. High-performance junior development programs abound in China, South Korea, Thailand and more. A good number of these players are finding their way to the United States to continue to learn and excel at the game. By combining personalized, high-level training with tournament support, and certified ESL classes, such as those offered at the Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf at Hawks Landing Golf Club in Orlando (www.nicklausacademyorlando.com), foreign students are picking up valuable life skills that will become useful whether playing in college, competing on one of the professional tours, or in
business and in life. Since every Nicklaus Academy teaches the same philosophy using the same terminology, students are able to seamlessly move from one location to another without missing a beat. Communication between the Certified Nicklaus Instructors using today’s latest technologies allow any Nicklaus Academy student the opportunity explore the world of golf while maintaining consistent training. A recently launched reciprocal program, The Nicklaus Academy Club, provides ‘memberlike’ access and discounts from one Nicklaus Academy to the next. Tour Edge Is On The Rise
Custom Fitting and a New Staff of Tour Players Are Leading Company Into Future

hat do you think of when you hear the name Tour Edge? For many of the cult followers of the 32-year-old US owned and operated company, the words that come to mind would be: top notch performance, underrated quality and outstanding customer service. For some, the word Exotics comes to mind with visions of tour players gaming the epically long 3 woods. Others will conjure up the word Bazooka, the long standing sub-brand that introduced the Iron-Wood to the golfing world. Some might recollect that the majority of their clubs are built in the USA near their Chicagoland headquarters. The real answer is that Tour Edge is all of the above and much, much more. They’ve become a Top 10 manufacturer in every category of clubs and they produce golf clubs for every player type possible, from the complete beginner in juniors and women to the best tour player on the planet. In fact, would you believe me if I told you that Tour Edge has collected the below tour accolades in the last decade?

tours while flying so far under the radar. That is all about the change thanks to their focus on the PGA TOUR Champions Tour this year and their commitment to an affordable custom fitting program designed to introduce fitting to thousands of golfers. Tour Edge hasn’t paid any of the tour players to use their equipment in the past. These players were playing Tour Edge and Exotics because it tested as the best performance enhancing product for their game. That limited what Tour Edge could do to spread the word on all of their tour successes. This year, Tour Edge is on fire on tour with their Exotics line climbing the professional club count rankings with their new Exotics CBX line of fairway woods, hybrids and ironwoods. Tour Edge has recently signed some of the best players in the world to represent
their Exotics CBX hybrid staff. Professionals like Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate , Duffy Waldorf, Tom Lehman, Bart Bryant, Fred Funk, are all on board with Tour Edge this year. This has helped the Exotics CBX line become the fastest growing metalwood on the PGA Tour Champions. The Exotics CBX hybrid is already ranking as the #2 hybrid model on the PGA Tour Champions and these spin killing metalwoods have already been in the bag for a victory and three runner-up finishes after only six events on this year. Twenty-four different players have put Exotics CBX into play since Tour Edge launched CBX last year at end of season. These players, who account for 133 PGA TOUR wins, have put Exotics CBX metalwoods in play on the PGA Tour
Champions in 2018. The majority of these players are not on staff with Tour Edge, they are choosing to play Exotics on their own accord. After six events on the 2018 PGA Tour Champions season,

Exotics CBX metalwoods have been in play for one win, three runner-up finishes, seven Top 5 and 14 Top 10 finishes. Tour Edge is keeping count of these tour statistics on a scoreboard on www.touredge.com. Tour Edge continues to get players on the PGA TOUR to put their clubs in play by choice due to performance characteristics. Two Exotics CBX hybrids were recently put into play at The Masters.
Hot Launch 3 and 48-Hour Custom Fitting Delivery The company’s new HL3 line of clubs (driver to wedge) has taken a major step forward in terms of technology, performance and looks over the last Hot Launch iteration and its mid-tier price point has it testing as the top pound for pound technology and performance set in all of golf. It’s also the only set in golf to provide nationwide custom fitting with a 48hour guaranteed delivery for custom fit orders. Hot Launch 3 by Tour Edge was designed and launched specifically to take advantage of the emerging custom fitting growth segment. Custom fitting is currently experiencing massive industry wide growth. Tour Edge is utilizing Golf Channel ad campaigns and other mediums to introduce the HL3 line and to market the message that every golfer can now afford get custom fit ino top-of-the-line technology. Get Fit, Spend Less, Play Better is the tagline they are utilizing to send this message. The last time Tour Edge had a TV ad was with Rodney Dangerfield some 15 years ago and it is certain that Tour Edge believes it is time that they got some respect with their highperforming golf clubs. “We feel it’s very important to bring new golfers into the custom fitting side of the industry,” said Tour Edge founder and President David Glod. “We are going after the ownership of an open niche - the value price point niche of club fitting, so while everyone is following pricing for custom upwards in this category; we are providing value, performance and technology

within the custom fit experience. No one else is doing that.” Market research supports an emerging trend to customization within the equipment market and that the value segment of this market has been largely un-serviced. 65% of the game’s five million core golfers have been custom fit, according to Golf Datatech. So what about the other 20 million golfers out there who haven’t been custom fit? The average price for a custom fit driver in 2015 was $341. The HL3 driver retail price is $189 and comes with 48-hour delivery anywhere in the continental USA. The average price spent on custom fit irons in 2015 was $772.The HL3 triple
combo set retails for $599 and offers two HL3 hybrids, two HL3 Ironwoods and three traditional HL3 irons in the set. These is unheard of value in the golf industry, especially for products that has all the technology the larger companies are offering and performance that is equal to or better than clubs that cost two to three times as much. Tour Edge is trying to grow custom fitting by encouraging the consumer to go get fit at one of the over 600 locations that has an HL3 fit bag and get sent their order to that same location with Tour Edge’s unprecedented 48-hour guaranteed delivery. To find a fitting center near you, visit the dealer locater on www. touredge.com. Tour Edge is currently experiencing their best start in their 32 year history. A combination of increased investment in television advertising and player endorsement is clearly paying
dividends. The company has also clearly hit a sweet spot with its current product line and all signs are pointing to a very bright future for this company on the rise.

Rainbow Challenge The 18th annual Rainbow Challenge Golf Tournament was held in Palm Springs, California. The event is hosted by the Stonewall Golfers, an organization of gay & lesbian golfers based in the greater Palm Springs, California area. The Rainbow Challenge is the longest-running gay & lesbian golf tournament in the world. The event has four (4) groups of players based on handicaps and prizes were presented to the top two male and female finishers in each group. The stroke play event was split between two courses, Desert Willow and Classic Club. The Escena Golf Club was also host to the registration and
pairings party. During the pairings party, a silent auction was conducted with various prizes available. The money collected benefitted the LGBT Community Center of the Desert and totaled over $5,000. The Center creates a vibrant community in the Coachella Valley by helping LGBTQ people along the way with several programs, providing critical social interaction opportunities for members of the LGBTQ community who are alone, isolated and for money, living at or below the poverty level. This year’s championship event included two rounds of golf, a 1st day

Do you enjoy playing golf?
I do not play golf! I have taken a couple of lessons with Steve Brewer, so maybe one day!
What do you feel makes this club special?
I would have to say the people. I’ve been a cart girl for 9 years, so I have a lot of regulars, but everyone is awesome.
What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl?
One year on my birthday a golfer went in the pro shop and bought me a hat and attached $100 to it and said Happy Birthday go have some fun on him... That was so sweet!
What type of music do you prefer? I listen to anything, but my go to would be country.
What hobbies do you enjoy?
Traveling, Four wheeling, jet skiing, hanging out at the beach
Favorite comedian? Kevin Hart
Favorite charity to support?
ASPCA or Ronald McDonald House
What else would you like for us to know about you?

Where were you born? Did you grow up there?
I was born and raised in Avon, Connecticut. I’m a New England kid at heart still….
High school group you hung out with the most; nerds, jocks, stoners, preppies? I was definitely a jock in high school. What do you do for a living?
I organize and manage professional golf events.
Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?
I try to be very active, love running outside on trails, going to the beach, and relaxing with friends. I also love to go the local karaoke bar. My go to song always is belting out I Want It That Way by Backstreet boys. I mean, it is a classic come on.
Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know. My hidden secret is that
I absolutely love watching the Bachelor. I never miss it on a Monday night. I also indulge from time to time on peach cobbler baby food.
What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, a pallet of
canned tuna, and Snapchat.
What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? People yelling “FORE” for no
reason. I used to drop my club, dive out of the way, freak out, etc. Now, it is like the boy who cried wolf. I don’t even react, which means next time that ball is coming straight for my face. Thanks everyone.
Scott Mancini Name the three most important things to you in this world. First would have to be family. Through
thick and thin, my family has always been by my side. I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today without them. Second are my friends. I value friendship right below family. In fact, a lot of times friends become my family over time. I pride myself on always being there and being someone they can count on, knowing that they will do the same. Lastly, its gotta be coffee. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to do any of the things I do.
What do you fear the most? This isn’t my biggest fear but probably my most obscure. I am terrified of mannequins. There is just something creepy about them.
What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? Definitely my 3 man crushes: Tom
Brady, Derek Jeter, and Justin Timberlake.
(opening a can of tuna) wine (KB says “you mean 3 bottles of champagne?”) You mean Netflix and Chill?
Favorite comedian? Jerry Seinfeld Movies:…comedy, drama, action, romance? Depends on the mood. Comedy for sure. I mean, who doesn’t like to laugh right? But I also enjoy action. I love war movies that are based on true events that took place. I think it is cool to see how actual elements from moments in history played out on the big screen. Favorite charity to support? Well I love working with kids
and am actually a Big Brother in the Big Brother Big Sisters program. So I would have to go with that one.

Sound Solution Master the elusive concept of rhythm and tempo with SwingClick
T
he Masters Tournament has an uncanny ability to produce the best reality TV on the planet. The drama, the story lines and the result can never be scripted and this year proved no different. From the triumphant return of Tiger Woods and the hopes of golf fans worldwide for a Major comeback win (his last the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in 2008), to Rory McIlroy completing the Career Grand Slam, to Phil the Thrill rewriting history and becoming the oldest player to win the Green
Jacket at age 47, to Justin Rose seeking redemption after his heartbreaking second place finish to Sergio Garcia last year. Then came Captain America, Patrick Reed. Reed won the 2018 Masters by a shot over Rickie Fowler and two shots over “stress-free” Jordan Spieth, who freewheeled an 8-under 64 and posted one of the best final rounds in the Master’s 82-year history. Where Reed excelled over the rest of the field at Augusta National was clearly on the daunting Par 5s. For the week, Reed made eight birdies, six pars and two eagles on those holes, which gave him strokes gained alone of 7.95 strokes against the field. That performance was fueled by an exceptional accuracy off the tee box. Reed’s fairways-hit percentage of 78.6 was tied for fifth in the field, and was the best of the final six players. Finding the fairway consistently has 32
everything to do with rhythm. Irrespective of your golf technique, if you lose your rhythm, your hands, body and club are out of sync, resulting in your ball traveling off target. Yet the concept of rhythm has always been one of the most elusive and most difficult golf fundamentals to teach. Enter the Swingclick, invented by former Sunshine Tour Player and golf instructor Mike Quinn. Swingclick is a tempo training device that has identified the key to keeping your rhythm. If you finish your backswing, you create lag time in your swing for your hands, body and club to work in sync. As a result, rhythm has now become something that is quantifiable for every golfer. “The challenge for most golfers is that their transition is too quick and this invariably leads to not finishing your backswing. says Swingclick Managing Director, Mike Quinn. “If you can learn to have a little patience in creating a smoother transition, your results will be more consistent, and you will become a better player.” The Swingclick golf swing trainer gives every golfer the opportunity to “practice-with-purpose.” The portable device straps to a golfer’s forearm just below the elbow and you’re ready to go. While making a full swing, Swingclick makes three clicking sounds: at the top of the backswing, at impact and on the follow-through. On the takeaway, the Swingclick clicks at the top of your backswing giving you a mental cue and the proper feeling of when you have finished your backswing and when to start your downswing. If your
transition is too quick, or you haven’t finished your backswing, it won’t click. CBS Sports golf analyst and threetime Masters Champion, Nick Faldo recently commented, “Rhythm and tempo is the glue that holds the golf swing together.” Amateur great and founder of the Masters Tournament, Bobby Jones said, “Rhythm and timing are the two things which we all must have, yet no one knows how to teach either.” The Swingclick rhythm and tempo trainer solves that problem. Now golfers can learn how to master a repeatable swing with rhythm and tempo. It works for everyone from pros to beginners and can be used on the driving range, on the golf course for practice rounds, or indoors. Swingclick was voted “Best New Training Product” at the 2016 PGA Show. The latest model, Swingclick PLUS, is available for purchase at Amazon and on www.swingclickgolf. com.

freddy's fairway thoughts
Billy Graham
American icon Billy Graham died at 99 in February and, at one time, was an avid golfer. I grew up in Asheville, N.C., right up the road from Montreat, and Rev. Graham was a member of our club, Biltmore Forest. He would drive over, dressed in golf gear, play his round and immediately head home. No socializing, because “socializing” back then was done at the bar. Outside the clubhouse was God’s land, inside belonged to the devil. Therein is the story. Back then, Buncombe County was “dry.” No alcohol. Even though Prohibition had proved that taking away booze wouldn’t work, the strong Baptist influence of the day continued it in our area. The bartender, Brooks Dandy, would go down the mountain to buy whiskey in South Carolina, which also was dry but which had bootleggers who sold the real stuff, not the dangerous moonshine of the North Carolina mountains. Brooks would sell bottles to members but he had a problem: where to hide the booze? Answer: in Billy Graham’s untouched locker. Never got caught, either.
Players stuff
• The Players’ attempt at a driveable par-4 was a dud last year as the redesign on No. 12 didn’t work. It was too risky to go for the green and the layup area was generous. When the Tour comes back in May, there will be less fairway for those who chicken out and the green has been adjusted to accept shots better. • This business of the tournament being the “Fifth Major” never took off and the PGA Tour’s new administration apparently has dropped the matter. It appears the word has spread from on high: let the tournament stand on its own and let’s not try and contrive anything. • The beer flows freely at PGA Tour events, as we all know from the “You Da Man” and “In The Hole” yells as the day wears on, and the Players has finally given up trying to keep the suds-induced noise level down. But, they want to get as many drunks off the course as possible, so this year there will be a big beer garden well back behind the 16th green. • Players ace p.r. guy Alex Urban has a new gig. He’ll take over the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. • How did PGA Tour star Matt Kuchar become such a good table tennis player? “From the time he could do anything, we let him play with little balloons and he developed great eye/hand coordination,’ says dad Peter, who lives a mile from TPC Sawgrass. “That’s what you need in ping pong.” • If you’re coming to the Players, you’ll find that Ponte Vedra Beach is about the same. No new restaurants, same old traffic. Graeme McDowell’s Nona Blue bistro, just outside the gates, is terrific.
Slow play
particularly by a group that plays 2-3 times a week and takes their time. A lot of time. The club’s solutions have been the usual. Probably just like your club: clocks around the course, griping at the group, threats of making them all use carts and the like. None work because none address the problem: it isn’t the group, it’s certain individuals within the group who hold everyone up by screwing around: fishing for balls, telling stories on the tee, not being ready when it’s their turn, marking their scorecard before leaving the green, and the like. Everyone knows the problem people but no one wants to be bossy. On an average, a foursome of them takes at least 4:15, this on a Donald Ross course (Jacksonville’s Timuquana CC) where the next tee is adjacent to the previous green and where the fairways are wide and the woods are thinned. Recently, there were five of us. Two between 70-80, three between 65-70. Four walked, one rode. Only one has a single-digit handicap. The others are in the 15-24 range. The usual time is in the 4:15-4:30 range. I asked if they would participate in an experiment. I asked that they go along with the following: • I would be the “captain” and thus responsible for speeding up the play. If I said anything regarding their pace of play, they promised not to get mad at me. • The tee is sacred. No talk at all. The first one to arrive hits. All others be ready to go. There’s plenty of time for stories as we walk down the fairway. • “Ready” golf is what it means. Hit when you’re ready, as long as no one is in your line of fire. • Make sure at least one other is paying attention when you hit so you’ll have a general idea where your ball went. • Play at your own pace. This isn’t a race, it’s a time to move at a reasonable pace and enjoy the weather, the course and the fellowship. • Putt out, or at least take putts only when they are a true tap-in. I didn’t want to be accused of devious ways to speed up play. We played in 3:53 and no one had problems with the new pace. I only had to speak to two people, both about being ready when it was their turn. Worked for us. It can work for you but there’s a caveat: someone has to be the bad guy and tell people to move along.

Timacuan Golf and Country Club Names PGA Professional Lewandowski As Director of Golf PGA Professional Joe Lewandowski, formerly the Head Golf Professional at Mission Inn Resort, has been named Director of Golf at Timacuan Golf & Country Club. Lewandowski, a native of Long Island, NY, will oversee all aspects of the golf operation at the semi-private facility in Lake Mary. “I have always enjoyed the layout at Timacuan,” said Lewandowski. “It has the reputation of being a great tournament golf course and a popular course for members and daily fee golfers. I am thrilled to be here and hope to build on that reputation.” Lewandowski comes to Timacuan

after four years as Head Golf Professional at Mission Inn in Lake County. There he oversaw member competitions and many high-profile regional and national tournaments over the two highly ranked El Campeon and Las Colinas courses. He also earned a solid reputation as an instructor for both individuals and group clinics. After graduating from Brown University where he played lacrosse, Lewandowski spent seven years in New York City at a large international bank in risk analysis and credit risk. In 2014 he moved to Florida and entered the PGA PGM program as an apprentice head golf professional at Mission Inn, eventually earning his PGA Class A Professional status Joe Lewandowski in 2016. Lewandowski, who lived in Winter Garden, has a one and a half year old son named Otis. There are many reasons why golf’s governing bodies often choose Timacuan to host their tournaments. Timacuan has received rave reviews from the many PGA and LPGA Tour players who have competed in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble during PGA Merchandise Show week each January. “I really enjoyed the golf course,” said Graeme McDowell, the Irishman who won the U.S. Open in 2010. “It is a great layout with a linkslike feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course. And it is in great condition.” Said LPGA Tour star Brittany Lincicome, “This is
a terrific golf course. It is a good test of golf. You have to be able to move the ball around to be successful here.” Timacuan, designed by renowned architect Ron Garl, features two distinctly different nines. The front nine has a Scottish feel, with open fairways, mounding, sprawling bunkers and large greens. The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel featuring stately oaks, tall pines, and several water hazards that demand precision off the tee and to the green.
About Timacuan Golf and Country Club Timacuan is a semi-private golf club located just off I-4 in Lake Mary, 15 minutes north of downtown Orlando. Timacuan has been one of Central Florida’s most popular courses since opening in 1988. It has garnered many statewide awards, being ranked as high as No. 14 in Florida by The Florida Golf Reporter Magazine. Orlando Magazine named Timacuan’s beautiful par-4 second hole as one of the toughest holes in Central Florida. Various membership programs are available. With its spacious clubhouse, Timacuan is also a popular site for weddings, corporate meetings and group outings. Arcadia Municipal Golf course: DeSoto County's Home of Golf The City of Arcadia is probably most well known for being the home of the Arcadia Rodeo, which made its debut in 1929. But, believe it or not, the game of golf has been played in Arcadia longer than cowboys have been riding those broncobusting bulls. As far back as 1917, golfers in Arcadia, led by local civic leader A.C. Polk, were pushing for the construction of a ninehole golf course. The golf course was to serve two purposes for the community: provide a place for local golfers to play the game and help increase tourism. By 1917, a deal had been struck to build a nine-hole golf course. It was going to be built on land donated by Albert W. Gilchrist, Florida's 20th governor. A name had also been selected for this soon-tobe-built golf course -- the Arcadia Golf and Auto Club. One major issue delayed construction on the golf course -- the United States' entry into World War I. In 1919, soon after the end of WWI, local lobbying efforts for the construction of the golf course started anew. In the fall of 1922, ground was officially broken to build this golf course. On Christmas Day of 1922, a few of holes were ready for play. At some point in 1923, all nine holes were complete. Six years later, the rodeo came to town. To this day, the rodeo and golf co-exist in Arcadia. To honor the perseverance of golf purists in Arcadia, it's very appropriate that this golf course is now one of the 53 golf courses on the Florida Historic Golf Trail. Fast forward almost 80 years. In 2001, nine more holes were added and the configuration of the original nine holes was changed to accommodate the additional nine holes. Today, it is called the Arcadia Municipal Golf Course (1769 Livingston Street, Arcadia, Florida), featuring 18 holes and four sets of tees. Right now,
the course, at its longest, measures 5,900 yards, but that may change according to the new director of golf Jeff Gibson. "We have some room to lengthen some of the holes with new tee boxes," said Gibson. The course opens up with three par fives among the first six holes, with each par five measuring less than 500 yards from the tips. On the golf course, the longest par five is the 499-yard fifth, the shortest par four is the 288-yard first, and the five par threes range from 142 yards to 212 yards. The five par threes are the real deal. And, frankly, every hole at Arcadia has character and charisma. At the moment, the condition of the
Arcadia Golf Course - HISTORY - 1943 aerial 52

course is being analyzed and improvements will soon be implemented. "We need to improve our greens and tee boxes," said Gibson. "Within a year, we'll have a nice neighborhood golf course. The City of Arcadia has made a financial commitment to getting the course back to where it needs to be. We must create growing conditions in order to succeed and we will." In addition to improving the life of the turf, Gibson has plans to improve the overall golf experience at his club. "We also have room to improve our driving range, make it lighted, and build an excellent practice facility where you can practice 80 and 90 yard wedge shots," added Gibson. "We want our course to be a better amenity to this community." Today, the Arcadia Municipal Golf Course is open every day of the year, from sunrise to sunset, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If you are not accurate off the tee, the Arcadia Municipal Golf Course can be as tough as the local rodeo. The bogeys can be as painful, brutal and butt-busting as those 'bad-boy' bulls that emerge from the bullpen. Call the pro shop -- 863-494-4223 -- to make your reservations for golf in Arcadia, but not the rodeo.

TOURISM. It’s a break for everyone. Our more than 66 million annual visitors aren’t just good for the tourism industry, they’re good for everyone who lives here. Tourists pay over $436 million in sales taxes, they pay to improve our infrastructure and helped build many of the public venues companies and residents enjoy. They are a major reason that businesses not directly associated with tourism are thriving, too.
Over the years, tourist numbers have attracted the great dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities that exist here, and have helped create many other businesses who serve the needs of our growing metropolitan area. The bottom-line is that tourism creates jobs, businesses and a better quality-of-life for everyone. Including you.

Driven by a love of the profession and a desire to give back to an industry that has given him so much, it’s full speed ahead for Darren J. Davis, CGCS, GCSAA’s 82nd president. Darren J. Davis, CGCS, the golf course superintendent at Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, Fla., was elected GCSAA’s 82nd president during the 2018 Golf Industry Show in San Antonio. This might come as a shock to those who know him well, but once upon a time, Darren J. Davis had no idea what he wanted to be when he grew up. Nowadays, the Certified Golf Course Superintendent at Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, Fla., has a well-earned reputation as one of the most driven and focused turfgrass managers around, one who successfully balances the demands of his full-time responsibilities at Olde Florida with volunteer service in nearly every corner of the golf course management industry. But, when he graduated from Lincoln High School in his home62
town of Tallahassee, Fla., some 30 years ago, Davis wasn’t all that driven, wasn’t quite that focused. “When I got done with high school, I kind of scratched my head and thought, ‘Now what am I going to do?’’’ he says. “I really had no idea.” In his quest to answer that question, he went to a local community college and earned an associate degree. He moved on to Florida State University, thinking a career in civil engineering appealed to him. “I loved being outdoors and I wanted a job that was going to provide me with a good living, so I thought civil engineering was the answer,” Davis says. He thought wrong.
“Within the first two weeks, it was pretty obvious that wasn’t going to be for me,” he says. “I was taking trigonometry, geometry and calculus, and for the most part, didn’t understand the language they were speaking.” But engineering’s loss turned out to be golf course management’s gain. A friend who knew that Davis loved the game of golf and had actually carved a putting green into his family’s backyard using a standard rotary mower suggested he look into work on the golf course. “He told me I had to find a job on the golf course, learn how to build them, how to maintain them,” Davis says. “He thought it would be perfect for me.” Golf Central • Volume 19, Issue 1
He was right, and that friendly nudge was all Davis needed to finally embrace his true passion. His first job in golf at Golden Eagle Golf and Country Club in Tallahassee led him to pursue his formal turfgrass education, which turned into stints at one of America’s greatest golf courses, which resulted in jobs at two Sunshine State standouts and a tenure at Olde Florida that is now in its 26th year. Now, that twist of fate some three decades ago is taking the 50-year-old Davis to what he considers the most important and impactful point of his career: his election last month in San Antonio as the 82nd president of GCSAA. “I get goose bumps thinking about being president for an association that I joined 28 years ago as a kid whose main excitement was getting to flip through the magazine every month,” Davis says. “It’s hard to believe it’s all gone so quickly, but it just gives me chills.” Olde Florida Golf Club is a place that cherishes its anonymity, its perch just a little off the radar. The club has no website. You won’t find signs for it anywhere along busy I-75 located just a few miles away. And the entrance to the club is as nondescript as they come — just a pair of small stone columns affixed with Olde Florida plaques — paling in comparison to the grand entrances you’ll find at some of the club’s golf neighbors scattered throughout the Naples, Fla., area. Considering all that, it’s a little ironic that Olde Florida’s superintendent for all 25 years of its existence, Darren J. Davis, CGCS, is among golf course management’s most visible and prolific communicators, a man as comfortable in front of the camera as he is behind the wheel of a greens mower. For many years, Davis hosted one of the industry’s first widely embraced video products, EPIC Creative’s “Superintendent’s Video Magazine,” and he played a key role in the related instructional video series, “Superintendent’s Video Workshop.” He’s also an accomplished writer, having twice won the Leo Feser Award from GCSAA for the best superintendentwritten story published in the pages of GCM, in addition to regular appearances in Florida Green, the chapter publication of the Florida GCSA, and other industry outlets. In 2007, he even went so far as to earn a bachelor’s degree in communications from Florida Gulf Coast University. More recently, Davis has extended his passion for communications into the social media realm, connecting regularly about what’s taking place on the golf course and his travels on Golf Central • Volume 19, Issue 1
behalf of GCSAA through Twitter (@ DarrenJDavisGCS), Instagram (@darrenjdavisgcs) and Facebook (www. facebook.com/DarrenJDavisGCS). “I’ve been blessed to find a career where I’ve been able to write, take photos and share stories,” Davis says. “Those are all things that I’ve enjoyed doing since I was a kid — things that my dad enjoyed, too, so they’ve always meant a lot to me.
“In our business, being able to communicate effectively — whether through an article, a video or on social media — is a really powerful tool. I’ve found that it can create a great connection with everyone from members at your club to your peers in the industry. It’s something that I fully intend to keep doing throughout my year as president, because it’s something I believe in and something I want to encourage others to embrace more.”
Davis (right) and Rees Jones have developed a closerelationship over the years as they’ve worked together to tweak and improve the layout at Olde Florida. 63

Three Exercises To Create A Shoulder Turn Like The Pros
Isn’t it amazing
when you watch the PGA Tour pros swing a golf club? Yes, there are some differences in their swings, but one major similarity is the way they turn their hips, torso and shoulders, especially through impact. One of the Death Moves in the golf swing of high handicap golfers is when we stand up out of our swing too early. The main reason for this happening is that we don’t keep a proper spine angle and we lack the “feel” of the proper shoulder rotation from back swing through impact and into the follow through. For the past few months I have been concentrating on keeping the proper spine angle through impact and into my follow through. I have created three exercises that, if practiced consistently, will help you to get the “Feel” of keeping the proper spine angle. It is a “Feel” thing which must be developed. You can do all the exercises in your home or office with just a few golf training tools. I am using an alignment rod, a GolfGym® PowerBand, and a Shortee Club with the PowerSWING

Plus attached. The PowerBand and the PowerSWING Plus are going to add resistance to the exercises. Resistance band work helps to “train” the muscles properly and will add strength and flexibility to your swing. Let’s get started. This sequence demonstrates the shoulder turn while keeping the spine angle during the turn. Using another alignment rod as a guide on the floor, turn your shoulders back and through while pointing directly to that rod on the floor. Notice my right shoulder is pointing down toward that rod. (Left handed golfers just flip the rotation) Perform 8-10 repetitions.
using the PowerSWING Plus resistance trainer affixed to the Shortee practice club. Perform a full swing from address to a strong position through impact. The resistance will train your muscles to perform the exercise consistently through repetition. As before, your right shoulder should follow the alignment rod on the floor all the way in the downswing. Perform 8-10 repetitions for best results. (do not hold your breath performing any of these exercises) Work on these exercises at home or in the office. Then, when you take these moves to the range for practice be
The second exercise is using the PowerBand from a secured position in the door frame. The same movement is performed with the shoulders rotating around a very stable stance and spine angle. Follow the alignment rod on the floor with your hands and your right shoulder. Perform 8 – 10 repetitions. It is best to perform this exercise in the opposite direction as well. The Third sequence is performed
sure to swing as smoothly as possible. Create a fluid motion concentrating on maintaining the proper spine angle and the right shoulder following the target line. Consistent practice will erase that dreaded Death Move from your swing for good. Go to https://GolfGym.com for info on the PowerBand/PowerHip Trainer, Shortee practice club and the PowerSWING Plus.
