No Rules, Just Writes

With all the scuttlebutt and questions regarding the USGA rules, violations, and interpretations, I’ll have to wear a coat that says, “I Don’t Care” on the back. Golf is a simple game plagued by complex rules that are ambiguous to say the least. Putting it simply....I LOVE GOLF, playing it, watching it, promoting the golf charities that raise funds for literally EVERY affliction know by man. As an unwritten rule, I try not to overexpose my friends and family in the magazine so as not to look incestuous and self-serving. But, when your granddaughter says she›s taking lessons and going to attend golf camp at Harmony Golf Preserve in the summer, you have to listen, and bend the rules. When I agreed that this would be a good idea, she had a few questions for her mom first. “Am I going to be on the cover? Is it going to cost $100,000 like everyone else pays? Is it like when Bella writes? Am I writing about my accomplishments? Do I need to include Tyler, or is all about me?” I am sooooo proud of Syd, she is amazing at gymnastics, sings at Karaoke all the time, the crowds love her, and so do I. Hi, my name is Sydney. I am nine and I can hit one hundred yards with my driver. This is the way I got to this point. I go to a golf camp and I have met a lot of people there. I have a coach named Mr. Roddy and he is very nice. The first day I was there I could not hit the ball. My dad also helped Mr. Roddy with the camp. I live on hole number five and I love it there. I also have a big brother that is eleven. He won a golf tournament at the age of two. The problem with my golf swing was it was too long. My dad mostly helped me. That is the way I hit one hundred yards with my driver. Sydney Fulghum So proud. This month the man that has been the MOST reliable man in my history of men, Rick Harris, AKA “Old Reliable” turns 88. If you are lucky enough to be in his friend list..... over the years you will have had a crazy Happy Birthday song sung to you, or left on your voice mail, those are keepers. Happy, Happy Birthday to Mr. Rick Harris!! 2009 North Florida PGA Amateur of the Year 6

According to head golf professional George Willard, orchids are grown inside the greenhouse by the maintenance staff. Those orchids are then used to beautify and decorate the resort throughout the year. Another interesting note to share is that the Everglades Superintendents Association conducts its annual golf outing at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club each May. It attracts roughly 130 players to this event which is attended by the many superintendents and maintenance staff who keep golf courses in southwest Florida in tip-top shape throughout the year. “Golfers of every skill-level absolutely love the new course, which is now in line with the rest of our AAA Four-Diamond resort,” said Willard. “The course challenges the best players, but also is truly enjoyable for all golfers.” The overall golf experience at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club is complemented by the presence of a

Golf is Great for the Heart! Meet pro-golfer Zach Johnson’s number one fan: Jaxson, a 7-year-old boy from Des Moines, Iowa, who suffers from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, an incurable heart condition that limits his physical activity and prevents him from participating in high-impact sports. But instead of letting that keep him down, Jaxson developed an intense passion for golf! Last year, global sports entertainment brand Topgolf heard about Jaxson’s passion for golf and wanted

12

to surprise him with an experience he’d never forget – riding alongside his golf idol during the Zach Johnson Foundation (ZJF) Classic! Not only was he Zach’s right hand man at the ZJF Classic, but Jaxson was also announced as a special guest of the 2018 John Deere Classic, where he and his family were granted VIP access to the tournament. We’ll leave it to the pros to take home the trophies, but it looks like new buds Zach and Jaxson scored a major hole-in-one!

Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation

All Participants

I recently traveled to South Florida to participate in the 17th Annual Links for Literacy Celebrity Golf Classic benefiting the Russell Education Foundation. For the past five years, I have enjoyed supporting and playing in this tournament, however, this year I was a little more excited. Jacaranda Country Club hosted the event. Nestled in the heart of Broward County in Plantation, Florida the semi-private golf facility features 36 pristine and picturesque holes of golf. You have your choice of two four-star rated championship courses: East Course or West Course. You can’t go wrong. I played the longer East Course several years ago, and it “beat me up pretty good.” This time around I took a different approach; and it was, all thanks to the tournaments best ball scramble format. The course was well marked, challenging and an overall wonderful golfing experience. Even more incredible, was the fact that each golfer was there to not only play golf but also to support an important cause. In a day and age when few things endure for two decades, Twan Russell’s, Russell Education Foundation (REF) celebrates its twentieth anniversary. The Foundation was established in 1998, by the former University of Miami and Miami Dolphin’s linebacker, Twan Russell, and his late mother, Corliss. Corliss, a middle-school teacher with a huge heart for helping struggling children, launched the Russell Life 14

Skills and Reading Foundation afterschool program to focus solely on reading. The program’s purpose is to equip children for academic success. Today REF continues to provide after school and summer learning services to over 1,000 kindergarten – 5th-grade students in 11 locations throughout Broward and MiamiDade counties. Priority is given to those children attending a school on the Priority Title 1 School List, where children qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. The Russell Reading Rooms pro-

vide safe, engaging environments that motivate and inspire learning outside of the regular school day. Russell Reading Rooms combine academic enrichment, cultural, and recreation activities to guide learning, as well as, engage children in wholesome activities. For more information on the Russell Education Foundation and sponsoring the Links for Literacy Celebrity Golf Classic visit www.russelleducationfoundation.com or email events@ russelleducationfoundation.com

Golfers are Heading for the Hills – in Georgia Many golfers often assume that the best mountain golf along the east coast is restricted to North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The often overlooked state is actually Georgia. Many golfers would be pleasantly surprised to know that two of the finest locations for mountain golf are actually located in the Peach State – specifically Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris, Georgia and Innsbruck Golf Club in Helen, Georgia. And, one of the finest mountain-based resorts is also located in north Georgia – Unicoi State Park & Lodge in Helen. An ideal travel plan for golfers is to stay at the Unicoi and then make the short commute each day to Brasstown Valley and Innsbruck. It’s also worth noting that each of those golf courses is also a part of the Georgia Golf Trail. “There isn’t a better weekend combination than staying at the Unicoi Lodge at night and then spending the days golfing at nearby Brasstown Valley and Innsbruck,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, Georgia Golf Trail. “We have terrific mountain golf opportunities in Georgia.” Nestled among the North Georgia Mountains, Brasstown Valley Resort (Pro Shop: 706-379-4613) is the quintessential mountain golf getaway. Even though Brasstown is located in the mountains, the golf course was built in a valley like setting, which justifies its moniker – Brasstown Valley. Just

a two-hour drive from Atlanta to the south and Chattanooga from the north, Brasstown is easily accessible for golfers from anywhere in the Southeast. At Brasstown Valley, there is a certain clarity to the golf experience. The mountain air is clearer, cleaner, and crisper. The atmosphere is refreshing, relaxing, and re-energizing. The golf course is well maintained, cleverly designed, and entertaining to play. It’s the real deal

-- a fair and fun golf experience. By standing on the practice putting green and admiring the beauty of the north Georgia terrain, it gets you excited about the 18 holes that await you. It all starts with a tee shot from a raised tee to a fairway down below. The carry is not as long as it looks, but it’s a tee shot which you want to hit well since the hang time will be significant. And, it just gets better from there. The golf course winds its way through wildlife preserves, ponds, and streams. At all times, you have spectacular views of the surrounding mountainous terrain.

Innsbruck Golf Club Helen, Georgia

Unicoi State Park & Lodge

Golf course designer Denis Griffiths carved a gem out of those mountains in north Georgia. Just go play Brasstown Valley….and then play it again. The Innsbruck Resort and Golf Club (Pro Shop: 706-878-2100) is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of north Georgia, located on the outskirts of Helen. The 18-hole par-72 golf course was designed by Bill Watts and was rated among Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play back in 2006/2007. It remains one of those Best Places to Play. Some golf pundits have referred to Innsbruck as “Alpine mountain golf at its finest.” Others have referred to the golf experience at Innsbruck as “affordable golf in priceless surroundings.” Both statements are accurate. At Innsbruck, distances Golf Central • Volume 19, Issue 3

don’t mean as much simply because of the large number of uphill and downhill shots that you have from the tee boxes and as you approach the greens. The most memorable shot at Innsbruck will be the downhill tee shot on the 15th hole. The descent from tee to green is significant – at least 150 feet. You won’t need nearly as much club as you think from any of the tees on the 15th. For many of the tee shots at Innsbrook, you are better off hitting your three wood rather than driver, simply because accuracy is more important than distance, especially on downhill tee shots. After golfing at Brasstown and Innsbruck, enjoy the Unicoi State Park & Lodge (Lodge: 1-800-573-9659/Park: 706-878-2201). The list of activities at

Unicoi is staggering. Simply put, at Unicoi, you will rediscover your sense of adventure. Nobody gets bored at Unicoi. The resort features archery, zip lining, fly fishing, tennis, twelve miles of hiking trails, eight miles of mountain biking trails, and a 53-acre lake which is ideal for swimming, pedal boating, fishing, canoeing, paddle boarding, and kayaking. During summer evenings, there are summer twilight hikes as well as a summer concert tour which is held at Unicoi. As for the accommodations, your best bet is to spend the night in one of 100 rooms at the Lodge, though cottages and campsites for tents, trailers or RVs are also an option. It goes without saying that any trip to north Georgia for golf should include a visit to the community of Helen, which has a strong Germanic quality to its architecture and atmosphere. When walking along the main road which goes through Helen, one gets the feeling that an Octoberfest-like celebration will be taking place that day and night. And, in October, it does! I can guarantee you that it won’t be easy leaving north Georgia, but it will be easy coming back. 19

Reynolds Lake Oconee The South’s Ultimate Playground [

\

Just an hour and a half from touching down at Atlanta’s international airport you can be enjoying one of, literally, dozens of energizing activities or just lazing in a hammock overlooking the water at Reynolds Lake Oconee – The South’s Ultimate Playground. Already the Southeast’s, if not the nation’s, leading residential resort community with a plethora of world-class amenities from golf courses and water sports to fine dining and luxurious accommodations, the addition of the Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds (SCSG), tucked into over 100 acres of pristine woodlands, has elevated this beloved lake retreat to a whole new level. The man in charge of Reynold’s newest outdoor experience is Justin

Jones, formerly of Gleneagles in Scotland whose deserved tagline is – The Glorious Playground. The centerpiece of the new sporting grounds is the shooting facility designed by Jones, a recognized international leading authority in the design and management of world-class shooting facilities. The centerpiece of the shooting area is a 20-station, over a mile long, sporting clays course designed by Jones that will challenge all levels of participants and every directional shot. There is also a five-stand shooting range – great for team competitions, an air-rifle range and a sporting clays instructional and games area. No stranger to the global sport

of local hunters, celebrities and titled royalty, Jones has taught them all with the grace and patience that the British do so well. A soft-spoken man, you might never know that here in historic rural Georgia is one of the world’s leading figures in shooting who is as eager to encourage novices

as well as hone expert marksmen. Not only are visiting golfers enjoying experiencing and learning shooting, the membership has embraced the new facility as a favorite family meeting place. In addition to shooting SCSG features fishing, canoeing, hiking, archery, an historic barn for indoor events and an amphitheater for outdoor concerts and performances. It also features prominently as part of the inaugural Reynolds Cup presented by National Car Rental that will be held September 10-12, 2018. This exciting new event will feature two-man teams made up of business leaders from across the country for several days of quality golf competition on the Oconee Course, but also exceptional networking opportunities. The $3,500 team entry fee includes threenight accommodations at the on-site Ritz Carlton, three rounds of championship golf (two competitive, one practice round), gift package, all food and beverage during the event and a Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds experience. Jones isn’t the only world renown Brit that has recently joined the team at Reynolds. After all, above all, it is a golfer’s paradise with 117-holes of championship golf and Nick Bradley, from Great Britain, is keen to assist golfers of all levels in getting the maximum enjoyment out of every distinct course experience. Bradley, whose clients include Justin Rose and Paul McGinley, is in charge of Reynolds’ instruction and custom club fitting from his office at the Reynolds Kingdom of Golf presented by Taylormade. This 16-acre practice facility is one of only two in the country and is equipped with the most advanced golf technology and the Taylormade Tour Trailer to custom build fitted clubs. As everyone knows the most important club in your arsenal is the shortest one between your ears and Bradley is also a respected motivational speaker. His insights into how to maximize your own unique abilities will have you enjoying the game as never before. Just ask the 2014 European Ryder Cup Team where Bradley, who served as a course strategist to Captain Paul McGinley, had their team enjoying a decisive 16 ½ to 11 ½ victory. Reynolds is continuously renovating and updating all their amenities from cottages, dining facilities, water sports equipment, landscaping and especially their golf courses. Currently the award winning, Jack Nicklaus-designed Great Waters Course is undergoing a full renovation and is scheduled to reopen

in the Fall of 2019. But there is still an amazing array of courses to play – Rees Jones’ decorated Oconee Course, 27 holes of Fazio brilliance over the National Course and two Bob Cupp classics – the Landing and Preserve layouts. There is also the Jim Engh-designed members-only Creek Course, should you decide to extend your visit to a lifetime lifestyle.. Just as all the amenities at Reynolds try to offer something for everyone from beginners to experts, the real estate opportunities at Reynolds also offer a wide variety of options and price ranges whether you are jut retired or still raising a young family. Sponsor a Golf Tournament, It Feels Great! In a world of business

where competition is the name of the game, it is always important to give back to the communities you are involved with and support one another. The easiest way to support charitable causes and have fun in the process is through golf events. In June, the city of Azusa hosted the “Kid’s Come First Charity Tournament” which helps build parks in the City of Azusa, provides free Holiday swim weekends, and provides funds to the Gladstone High School and Azusa High School golf teams. It was amazing to see the high school golfers at the event receiving their oversized checks that will help their teams buy golf bags and golf balls for the upcoming season. In the world of golf this a wonderful thing as it helps expand the game to new kids, who will have the opportunity to play a wonderful game for the rest of their

JJ Qualkenbush

lives. My family’s towing company (Jan’s Towing) was grateful to be the title sponsor of the event and it was very fulfilling to help a cause greater than your own. Being the title sponsor was a great experience and we were able to bring

22

an “Aloha” theme to the event, hiring hula girl dancers to entertain the guests, provide tropical flower arrangements, and provide a $1000 Costco shopping spree to one lucky guest. Bringing joy to the guests was great in itself but to see a community come together to support a cause was priceless. The response to the event was incredible, and it sold out. The historic Petwood Hotel played an active role with the RAF in WWII and is a favourite of visiting golfers today

Experience Woodhall Spa Golf Club Bandon Dunes – Streamsong – Sand Hills – All top 100 courses – All in remote locations – All on almost every “must play” bucket list of avid golfers to make the pilgrimage – So why not Woodhall Spa GC? Especially as it’s Hotchkin Course is a solid Top 10 resident on most Great Britain course lists and many Top 100 in the world rankings. To start with its not a true “linksland” course, and somehow many American golfers visiting GB & I have come to believe that playing just the traditional well-known links courses is the only way to justify a trip over the Pond. Secondly, it suffers from being located in a rather secluded, but charming village, Woodhall Spa, in Lincolnshire and not really on a direct path to or from any links courses on traditional itineraries. Sadly, it is their loss, because the scenic journey to Woodhall Spa will reward those who venture there a most rewarding golf experience both on and off the courses. I made my first visit to Woodhall Spa over a decade ago on my quest to play the Top 100 in the British Isles. I was blown away at what a gem the 24

Hotchkin Course was – especially the amazing cavernous penal bunkers. It was difficult but it was fair and I loved every minute of this heathland classic that has also been called an “inland links,” benefitting from the same sandy turf as the more famous coastal courses. And it enjoys the deserved reputation of being known as England’s finest interior layout. Harry Vardon, James Braid, JH Woodhall Spa GC with its iconic ancient tower circa 1440

Taylor and most notably Harry Colt all made their way to Woodhall Spa in the day and since my last visit, Tom Doak, of modern architectural fame is transforming the Hotchkin back to the ingenious layout its namesake, course owner and respected architect in his own right, Stafford Vere Hotchkin (along with most of Colt’s original routing), envisioned 100 years ago. While it doesn’t have close proximity to other top 100 courses or popular links, it is an easy journey over from Manchester or up from the London airports and an excellent start to a golfing adventure. The village of Woodhall Spa is a small quintessential Victorian English village – just what the doctor ordered as a respite from today’s hassles of travel. Recently I picked up my car around 8 am at Heathrow and was at the Club in time for an early lunch before noon – even traveling around London (against traffic) during rush hour. On my departure day I had a leisurely breakfast and was over to Royal Liverpool in time for a 1 o’clock tee off. So Woodhall really isn’t too remote to combine on other links oriented itineraries. The English Golf Union – Home of English Amateur Golf – has its headquarters at Woodhall Spa where it is also home to the National Golf Centre practice facility. juniors to the seniors utilize the facility for practice and coaching so it is perfect for a warm up after a long flight to get the cobwebs out of your mind and the kinks out of your swing. The Hotchkin course sits on a fabulous piece of sandy soil and it is relatively flat, most welcome on a walking round. You won’t miss expansive views while playing – each hole is picturesque itself and you’ll be too busy concentrating on avoiding the devilishly deep and expansive bunkers that give the course its character and teeth. While the fairways are very generous, the wind does get up and is a factor in your shot making. The Bracken Course joins the Hotchkin to make a diverse 36-hole complex. The Bracken is a tranquil parkland course designed by Donald Steel, a decorated English golf course architect, historian and past President of the English Golf Union. He was assisted by Tom Mackenzie, who with current partner Martin Ebert have gone on to perform their magic on Royal Portrush, Turnberry’s Ailsa, Tre-

The greenkeeping staff at WSGC are an exceptionally talented crew, as there are enough challenges in keeping two championship courses in pristine shape when they are similar – let alone when they are created on completely different soil, feature a variety of grasses and unique hazards – most notably water features on the Bracken and protective bunkers and heather on the Hotchkin. Woodhall Spa maintains an active ecology program dedicated to preserving and protecting the ecosystem of the heathland. If two top-rated courses aren’t enough to tempt you to make the journey, history buffs should note that Woodhall Spa was home to the 617 Squadron one of the RAF’s most decorated. Sapphire National Golf Club – Golf, the Way Nature Intended

Golf course designer Ron Garl has created over 250 golf courses around the world and Sapphire National Golf Club is certainly one of his finest. It has received a 4 ½ star golf course rating from Golf Digest. Garl has stated that his goal at Sapphire National “was to design an exciting, innovative and unique golf course that artfully employs the natural characteristics of the mountainous terrain and waterfalls yet adheres to sensitive land design where both the environment and man can not only coexist- but also thrive.” I’ll go along with his statement for the most part although in some parts of the Sapphire National layout, it’s the course that does the thriving! Sapphire National Golf Club is the only 18-hole golf course in the High-

lands, Cashiers, and Sapphire region that is open to the public and doesn’t require a hotel stay. Sapphire National offers players five sets of tees that play anywhere from 6,724 (Black Tees) to 32

4,686 (Red Tees). Choosing the right set of tees is critical to the amount of enjoyment you will derive from Sapphire National Golf Club. The rule of thumb is: Right tees are delightful, wrong tees are frightful! And, in the event your round’s not going well, step back and look at the beauty God has surrounded you with. That’s what I did; come to think of it, I spent a lot of time looking at nature! Sapphire National plays to a par of 70 on bent grass tees, fairways and greens. The front nine features three par 3s, four par 4’s and two par 5s and only one par 5 on the back. As you make your way around this 18-hole championship mountain course, you can’t help but admire the beauty and splendor of the location. Scenic mountain views, dramatic elevation changes

both up and down and lush forests give way to water features and picturesque bunkering throughout the layout. Most Memorable Hole: Number 2: Par 3, 225 yards (Black tees). This is one of the most intimidating par threes you

will ever face. Even though the green is less elevated and more than twice its original size, it is still a challenge to hit and hold off of a tee box that sits over 100 feet above it. The rocks to the left add not only aesthetic value but can also offer the occasional friendly carom; unfortunately, not for me! Avoid the pot bunker on the right side or face a tough up and down. Back right pin placements can be exceptionally challenging. It’s not often that a par 3 is rated one of the 3 hardest holes on a golf course. Favorite Par 3: Number 15, 170 yards (Black tees). In addition to being known for creating replica holes from famous golf courses around the world, Ron Garl loves to throw in the occasional island green. Although it’s not an exact copy of Number 17 on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, it is very reminiscent of it. The island green sits 70 feet below the tee box and the pot bunker on the front left side brings on an added challenge. Find it off the tee instead of the green and your par just became a whole lot tougher. With the lake surrounded by woods, this hole looks like it belongs on a Hallmark card! Favorite Par 4: Number 13, 410 yards (Black tees). Not only is this one of the most famous and photographed golf holes in all of North Carolina, it also rates as the toughest on the inward 9. It’s a dogleg left that requires you to hit a long tee shot to make it to the turn; trees guard both sides of the fairway making it that much tougher. Your approach shot plays up a rise of about 50 feet to one of the smallest greens on the course and is protected on the right side by a beautiful waterfall. There’s Golf Central • Volume 19, Issue 3

also small pot bunkers that sit several feet below the putting surface in the front left and front right of the green as well as another in the back. Par is an outstanding score here. Favorite Par 5: Number 1, 595 yards (Black tees). Nothing like getting the longest hole out of the way quickly. Your first shot of the day – provided you’re not playing in a scramble – requires a decision: try and carry the creek off the tee or not. Your second shot requires some accuracy in order to avoid the two fairway bunkers on the right and one on

the left in the landing area. Success so far means all that’s left to do with your approach shot is to fly the creek and strategically placed bunker that guards the front of a small green and make your putt. Is there a better way to start your day? After your round, be sure to stop by the Sapphire Mountain Brewing Company, conveniently located in the clubhouse. This family-friendly establishment is a full-service restaurant and bar, showcasing over 100 of the area’s finest craft beers. The restaurant and adjoining patio overlook the 8th and 18th greens. The food is outstanding and not your typical clubhouse fare. Appetizers such as Soft Pretzel bites,

which are served with their homemade beer cheese sauce, or Hillbilly peppers, fire-roasted jalapeno peppers filled with fresh cream cheese and wrapped in applewood bacon, served with a smoky coulis. Their “Pub Grub” features an Angry Bird sandwich; it’s grilled chicken with sriracha mayo, pepper jack cheese, jalapeno peppers, lettuce, tomato and onion served on a soft bakery bun. Good thing you’ve got ice cold beers to wash down all those hot ingredients. They may not cool down the fire in your belly, but those craft beers will sure have you feeling good! In case you’re extra hungry SMBC’s Baby Back Ribs or 12 oz Ribeye steak dinner is sure to satisfy the biggest

of appetites. Sapphire Mountain Brewing Company also offers wood-fired pizzas and calzones with that one-of-a-kind wood fire flavor. Their signature pies are handcrafted, rolled and tossed the old-fashioned way and then baked in a wood-fired oven. They offer 12 varieties or you can create your own. Whatever your palette desires, you won’t be disappointed. The golf course at Sapphire National underwent extensive renovations several years ago and now it’s the Brewery’s turn! Renovations and expansions are planned for the Sapphire Mountain Brewing Company that will make it the most happening nightspot in the area. There are also plans to greatly expand the practice facilities. On your next visit, take a look at the pictures of the proposed expansion. And, in case you want to play the course multiple times, lodging is available nearby. No matter the state of your game, Sapphire National will prove to be a worthy adversary. For more information on this breathtaking mountain golf course, visit their website at www.sapphirenational.com. You can also book your tee time online from the website.

a highly acclaimed 36-hole facility, but Daytona Beach has been attracting players for more than 100 years. Here are three things you likely didn’t know about Daytona Beach’s long-standing ties to the game. Donald Ross, who was born in Scotland before later becoming an American citizen, is widely regarded as America’s most important golf course architect. He designed Pinehurst No. 2, Oakland Hills, East Lake Golf Club and Seminole Golf Club, among many other high profile layouts. Ross also left his mark in Volusia County, designing the South Course at Daytona Beach Golf Club and New Smyrna Golf Club. Like many Ross designs, the challenge at the South Course lies in the greens complexes. New Smyrna, which opened in 1953, is the “new” Ross course. Boasting outstanding year-round conditions, it is one of the area’s hidden gems. When it comes to competitive golf, Daytona Beach is, understandably, closely associated with the LPGA Tour, but did you know the area is home to golf’s longest running mini-tour event - the Riviera Open? Riviera Country Club has hosted the tournament since 1960 and future PGA Tour champions are among the event’s past champions, including 7-time Tour winner Bert Yancey,

The Road to the PGA and LPGA Tour Goes Through Ron Garl Bobcat has been recognized as one of the top 50 courses in the nation and also hosts an annual Celebrity Golf Classic tournament. The LPGA TOUR players play from 5,655 yards with a rating of 74. It’s a great test of golf for the ladies. Garl designed the Panther Course to Eaglebrooke

These days its seems that if aspiring golfers want to make it to the PGA or LPGA TOUR, Ron Garl is a name they should know. Or at least be familiar with some of his course designs here in the Central Florida area that are famous for their unique style, design and strategy. In April 2018, The Club at Eaglebrooke was chosen to host the qualifying for the PGA TOUR’s Canadian Mackenzie Tour. Eaglebrooke was designed by Garl in 1996 and has consistently been rated 4 ½ stars by Golf Digest. This par 72 championship layout challenges even the best of golfers and can be played from as far back as 7.005 yards. If you’re just a weekend golfer, don’t let these numbers put the fear of golf into you. Eaglebrooke features 6 sets of tees, making it playable and enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. Number 10 is the most memorable par 5 on the course. This dogleg right features water that is reachable off the tee and flows all the way down the right side to the green. If you favor the left side of the fairway off the tee and appreciate a good risk/reward oppor-

Green Girls Golf Sets Up Shop in the Sunshine State with a Charity Event Sophia Manolis, founder of Green Girls Golf

The Founder, of the innovative idea of Green Girls Golf is Greek-American Sophia Manolis a Jersey Native, who has created a brand like no other. Green Girls Golf Caddies and Event Hostesses for Golf Events has been around for eleven years, it originated in New Jersey and now has branched out to Arizona. The all-female caddies participate and work with all types golf outings offering a whiteglove service. Sophia remains the catalyst for this company which she has hosted and worked for corporate, private, and not-profit events. One of their most memorable events was when they joined Jaws Youth Playbook where they coordinated an outing focusing on promoting youth wellness and health for children. GGG moved on and offered their services for the organization Bright Smile that is an advocate for children with disabilities. In addition, they added to their list of charitable outings was with the Podiatric Medicine Founda44

FL Outing tion (The Foundation provides ongoing education and professional development for practitioners in the field) and then with the Susan B. Yoskowitz Charity at the Crystal Springs Resort every year. Susan B. Yoskowitz Charities goal is to focus on raising funds for a rare form of cancer. “My services specialize in golf outings such as fundraisers, charities and benefits. We can either help you run it or lend a hand in providing staffing for the outing; like event hostesses that can participate in raising money and helping with sponsors or just being a private caddie service for the fellow golfers. “ GGG has planted their flag in the Tri-State and have made a great brand and felt that it needed to

branch out and did so by offering GGG services in Scottsdale, Arizona. This past April they completed their first golf event in Scottsdale for “The First Alarm Golf Tournament” which was part of the 8th Annual for the Goodyear Guns and Hoes. The event was a huge success with the caddies and the participants. Nothing pleases the girl caddies more than working for a good cause. The tournament is meant to support fire fighters in the Scottsdale area. GGG has worked with the Fire Department and the Police Departments from the area who congregate together to put on this annual golf outing every year. The tournament has been running for eight years now and comprised of the police and fire departments from around the valley. The event is meant to raise funds for charities and for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital to Children’s Burn Camps. Green Girls Golf has grown and has set up shop in South Florida and as we mentioned now in South West of Arizona. One of their next target States is Houston, Texas. They are focusing on states that have avid golfers where they can establish a great presence and a brand that would allow GGG to grow and change the world of the golfer and organizations that can make a positive change in society. In addition, they can expand their services for needed events across the country. RUFFINO SPARKLING ROSÉ The Story: Sparkling Rosé is an elegant and stylish Italian sparkling wine made primarily from the Glera grape, which is used in all Prosecco wines, blended with Pinot Noir. The Glera grape gives the wine structure and body, and the Pinot Noir provides the wine with a beautiful rose hue. Its extra-dry style makes it easy to enjoy, and its bright fruit flavors and delicate bubbles make it perfect to enjoy as an aperitif or to pair with a variety of dishes. Tasting profile: Ruffino Sparkling Rosé is fresh and fragrant with notes of strawberry and slight hints of rose petals. On the palate this wine has elegant bubbles and refreshing acidity, offering alluring flavors of delicate red berries and white fruits that linger through the finish. Food Pairings: Ruffino Sparkling Rosé is enjoyable on its own as an aperitif, but also as a food companion, pairing well with a variety of dishes including grilled fish, roasted chicken, and mixed greens salads. Winemaker Notes: Grapes for Ruffino Sparkling Rosé are from highly desirable vineyards in northeastern Italy. The first stage in making this sparkling wine follows traditional still wine methods. A white wine is made from Glera grapes and a second red wine is made from Pinot Noir grapes. These two wines are then blended, creating a wine with a beautiful rose hue and bright flavors. In the second stage, the Charmat method is used to bring about a secondary fermentation before the wine is bottled under pressure, preserving all of the fresh and fragrant characteristics of the wine.

Simpler Things Cocktail Instructions 3 parts Ruffino Sparkling Rosé 1 part vodka ¾ parts lemon juice ¾ parts simple syrup (or spice this up by making blackberry simple syrup) 1 egg white Fresh blackberries Method Dry shake ingredients (except for the rosé), and then add ice and shake again. Pour into a highball glass and top off with Ruffino Sparkling Rosé. Garnish with a blackberry skewer.

Getting Back in the Swing of Things:

the shoulder and surrounding joints. The muscles that most commonly contribute to limited internal or external rotation are the pectoral minors and lats. Restoring proper elasticity to those muscles will have a very positive effect on shoulder range of motion. After injury, many people will naturally feel better after a few days or a few weeks rest, depending on the severity of the injury. While rest makes the injury feel better, it is even more important to take the proper steps to ensure the injury will not occur again because of poor movement patterns by focusing on corrective exercise to build a solid foundation. Unfortunately, many golfers rush back from injury, which can lead to further injuries down the road. The best way to address the injury is to identify restrictions of mobility and stability with a professional and build an appropriate treatment and corrective exercise program that addresses limitations. Do not attempt to play more golf for a day or two or until the pain subsides, as using strained muscles can worsen the injury and lead to even more downtime. These three steps can help recover without stressing inflamed muscles: Basic foam rolling: Foam rolling aids in recovery from the microtears to 50

soft-tissue that occur when playing golf or hitting the gym. But what it also does is make muscles, ligaments and tendons more pliable which improves flexibility, relieves soreness, and reduces the risk of re-injury. Three imperative stretches: Reaching Lateral Side Stretch, Reaching-down Triceps Stretch, and Bent Arm Shoulder Stretch are all necessary to injury recovery by helping tight muscles and joints to become loose, limber and pain free. Muscle activations: When injury causes tissues to tighten, muscle activation focuses on the root of the pain through assessment and correction, which can often be overlooked. Once cleared to play, it is necessary to ease back into training with corrective exercise to restore proper function and preventative care for success long-term. Freddy’s

Fairway Thoughts

First Coast Lauren Waidner of the University of Florida (left) won the First Coast Women's Amateur last month at Jacksonville's Timuquana CC with a birdie on the second extra hole playoff over Hannah Berman (center) of Jacksonville University and Chloe Schiavone of Jacksonville's Bolles School. • You have your choice of two doctors: one does the procedure one week a year; the other does it for over 40 weeks a year. No brainer, right? So, let's ask the USGA to call their pals at the PGA Tour to help set up the U.S. Open courses. Every year...every year!...there's a problem. • One bullet the USGA doesn't deserve is misreading Saturday's weather at Shinnecock Hills. No one anywhere — including the TV guys — predicted the winds. • One bullet the USGA deserves is the handling of Phil Mickelson after he ran over to his errant putt on the 13th hole on Saturday and hit the ball while it was moving. If a kid did that in almost any junior tournament, he would have been hauled off the course by the scruff of his neck. Mickelson can make a fool of himself; that's his business. The USGA should have put a clamp on his ample scruff and hauled him off; now, the kid can say “Phil did it, why can't I?” • The weather disparity between early and late tee times can produce oddities, such as the pair of 66s (Daniel Berger and Tony Finau) on Saturday and the 63 (Tommy Fleetwood) on Sunday. It recalls an unfortunate event at a big club pro tournament in Ponte Vedra when the host pro, who 52

was a shot off the lead, put himself off first so he could get back to the scoreboard. He shot 67 and finished just in time to miss the afternoon winds, which blew everyone out. • Lets leave the “Super Group” pairing idea to others. It was a disaster at the Players, and again at the U.S. Open when Rory McIlroy, Mickelson and Jordan Spieth were +25 the first day. Spread 'em out, just like the old days, so the gallery spreads out. • They'll start construction soon on the PGA Tour's fancy new headquarters in what's now the parking lot for The Players Championship. Site work is underway and the building might be ready for next year's tournament. • The Players move back to March is a big deal for the area's merchants. May is a good month for business anyway; March is very slow. • The Northeast Florida golf community has an annual banquet and the big honor is the Deane Beman Award to a person who has contributed mightily. This time it goes to Anne Nimnicht, the only person who has chaired events in three different PGA Tour categories: she handled the Players, the now-vanished Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, and the Web.Com Championship. • Perry Golf is one of the most respected vendors and boss Gordon Dalgleish says the hot destinations are Southeast Asia and —would you believe? — the Arabian Gulf. • The passing of Hubert Green recalls a pretty good trivia question: when Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson had their famous “Duel in the Sun” in the British Open at Turnberry in 1977, who finished third? It was Green, who said “even my wife left me to watch them.” • Younger and younger. Jacksonville's Chloe Schiavone, just a rising junior, has a full ride waiting to Notre Dame. She and her 12-year-old partner Izzy Pellot of Orlando lost on the last hole of their quarterfinal match this summer in the USGA Women's Four-Ball. And, in the excellent North Florida Women's Amateur last month, 12-year-old Alexandra Gazzoli of Palm Coast, Fla. eagled a 460-yard par-5 with a second shot from 170 and a 15-foot putt. • Best golfer in NASCAR? Denny Hamlin, by far. He's a 2.8 at The Peninsula Club in Charlotte. • The second most expensive clubhouse in Northeast Florida gets underway this fall when Sawgrass Country Club puts $18 million into a new facility. The most expensive is the area’s best known across the street at the TPC. If you ask, they'll tell you it cost $33 million but that's about $11 million short of reality. • One of the best pro jobs has been filled as Stefan Brunt moves back to Ponte Vedra Beach to take the head job at the highend Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, where he'll work under Director of Golf Jim Howard. Brunt was head pro at Sawgrass before going south to the Mizner Country Club in Delray Beach.

Women & Girls Golf is Showcased Around the World

Women’s Golf Day 2018 hailed a huge success after thousands of women take part in WGD events around the globe

Dominican Republic

June 5th saw the world come together for its third annual celebration of women & girls golf – Women’s Golf Day 2018. Events across the globe kicked off in Sydney, Australia, finishing over 24hrs later, and almost a full turn of the globe away, in Hawaii, with golfing communities being strengthened and created all along the way. The 2018 event spanned eight new countries: Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Turkey, Mauritius, Egypt, Uganda, Guadeloupe and Montenegro, taking the total number of countries to have participated in the event to 58 and the number of venues in excess of 900. With thousands of Women enjoying the day of golf and socializing at their golf venues, and millions of golf fans supporting the event across social media, Women’s Golf Day 2018 created a wave of enthusiasm for the

Women’s game like never seen before. Elisa Gaudet, founder of Women’s Golf Day was astounded by the impact of the day and the support shown across the world, “I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved with Women’s Golf Day. The positivity and enthusiasm shown by the golfing community across the world just blew me away. The pictures of smiling faces at events in Uganda, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and so many others could so easily have been the faces I saw at the events I attended in the U.S. The game of golf has transcended national borders and the incredible women involved in the game across the globe showed the world how much we all have in common.” Lauren Thompson from Golf Channel played a prominent part in promoting the day’s events, hosting Morning Drive’s program dedicated to Women’s Golf Day and those people in the

industry making an impact on women. They even included live coverage from WGD events in Dubai and Pinehurst, leading Lauren to comment, “WGD is so fun, I cannot believe it has been 3 years in the running and we always talk about growing the game and how much we need to get more females out there on the golf course and then someone went and did something about it.” Social media support from the golfing world hit a new high with some of the most recognized names and organizations in the game getting behind the day. But the real stars of the show were the women & girls that were out on the courses, ranges, stores and venues that held events across the globe. Natalie Goodall, Assistant Teaching Professional at The Els Club Dubai – “WGD has really helped bring awareness around the region, not just in Dubai but in Abu Dhabi and also in the Saudi regions. It’s becoming really big and it’s so good to see” @EilidhBarbour tweeted “My amazing mum took up golf in her 40’s. She inspired me to try. Now we golf together as much as we can. We catch up, we laugh, sometimes we sing and we ALWAYS have fun. Even in the rain. It’s more than just a sport. As the sun set on the final event in the 2018 day, Elisa reflected on the global movement that she has created. “There’s nothing like WGD in any other sport,“ concluded Elisa, “The communities that we’ve tapped into are truly amazing and to be part of growing and strengthening

Berger & Biondi Capture 2018 Pro-Junior Championship

On June 30th, 28 teams comprised of one PGA Professional/Associate and one junior aged 10-18 competed in the 2018 Pro-Junior Championship presented by Callaway Golf and supported by Skimp USA at Stonebridge Country Club in Boca Raton. At the close of competition Mike Berger of the Club Med Golf Academy and junior Fred Biondi found themselves at the top of the leaderboard. Firing an impressive 57 (-15) they captured the title by four shots to Jon Balyeat, PGA Head Golf Professional at Quail Creek Country Club and junior Tommy Pezeshkan along with Jerry Tucker, PGA Professional at the Jerry Tucker Golf School and junior Alex Vogelsong. Balyeat and Tucker’s team both shot 61 hoping it was good enough to finish first. This event featured some of south Florida’s top ranked junior golfers who teamed up with their golf professional for a fun day of golf. Teams played a 9-9 format with the front nine being a better ball format and the back nine being a scramble.

Pisarri shot a 4-under 68 Thursday on the Cypress Course at Bonita Bay Club Naples to win by a stroke over five PGA Professionals. “It feels special to make history like that,” said Pisarri, a 24-year-old who played on the Coastal Carolina golf team. “I’m a little surprised to have won, but I knew I was playing well.” Pisarri started the final round three shots back, but overcame a bogey at the par-5 eighth hole with five birdies to finish at 9-under 207. He said he’s rather enjoy the game than make a living from it. “I had a lot of expectations when I graduated from Coastal Carolina,” he said. “Now I don’t. My goal is to try and win the U.S. Mid-Amateur so I can play in the Masters and U.S. Open.” Andrew Filbert, the South Florida PGA’s reigning Player of the Year, finished eighth. Defending champion Patrick Rada, the PGA Head Professional at the McArthur Club in Hobe Sound, tied for ninth at 212. Jerry Tucker became the Senior Champion Wednesday when he made a 90-foot putt from off the green for birdie on the first playoff hole to beat Fieger and Gary Keating, the PGA Director of Golf at Shell Point Golf Club. The trio shot 7-under 137. “I just turned 69 and every (win) feels like a bonus,” said Tucker, A PGA Teaching Professional who has been the South Florida PGA Senior Player of the Year six times. “It had about 3 feet of break to the right. I knew it was going to be close and all of a sudden it went in.” The E-Z-GO South Florida Open, run by the South Florida PGA, is presented by E-Z-GO and supported by Antigua, JaniKing, Precise Yardage Books and Turfhound. Bunker renovation project It has been a while since a new golf course has been built in South Florida, this has been the trend for most of the US, however, the new trend is to remodel the existing facilities. Clubs are doing the remodel or renovations for several reasons, some of those reasons are to update their golf course, provide a exceptional conditions to their customers and to remain relevant attracting new members who want to belong to a club that is in sound financial

The golf course went through a major remodel a few years ago headed by renowned architect Mr. Jim Fazio, which included updating the golf course by regressing the golf course with the latest and greatest grasses available. The renovation process also included the complete renovation of all the bunkers with the latest bunker liners and the latest sand available in the area. While the bunkers had the normal wear and tear for their age, Hurricane Irma really did a number on them‌ to the point we had no choice but do a complete remodel. The process started May 7 of this year which happened to be one of the wettest months of the year and not conducive to do a renovation project. We experienced approximatly 30 of rain in 25 days, but we kept moving forward with

the project as fast as we could without creating havoc or major damage due to construction and having heavy equipment running around the course. This process gave us the opportunity to address several things that was wrong with our bunkers. We were able to bring the bunkers back to the original redesigned of 7 years ago by Mr. Jim Fazio, we had the opportunity to redo all the drains, we also had the opportunity to address the external drainage, several areas drained into the bunkers creating major washed outs with any kind of rain the golf course got. We were able to use a synthetic liner to the complete bunker surface; an important process if you want to keep rocks from percolating upwards to the sand surface. We also took advantage of bringing in the new and improved G-angle sand, we used the double washed G-Angle sand. Our bunker renovation project was completed just under two months, considering the rainfall we experienced during the project we are happy the project came in on time and on budget. Creating a Culture of Green Excellence in Coconut Creek, Florida

Coconut Creek, like many other areas in the South Florida region, began as a collection of residential neighborhoods designed within a suburban land development pattern. Having no downtown, historical district, main street, or clear historical reference, it was clear that the community needed an identity; different from the adjacent communities. In 1999, the City began to tackle environmental issues and thus, a “green” movement began. The next step for the City was to analyze the many facets of our local government and to plan a path forward to align the City with this green vision. The City used a ground-swell of community support to establish a green image. The historical success of the events and programs helped the City achieve a leadership status for South Florida. However, the City recognized the need to advance its green efforts for the next decade in a manner that was goal-driven, measurable, and accountable; a need to balance past efforts with new policies and programs, the need to address environmental issues such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions, 62

the need for decision making when determining if budget items impact the environment, and the need to monitor progress. This was accomplished by adopting a 10-year Green Plan. In April of 2011, Coconut Creek became the first, Audubon International Certified Sustainable Community in the State of Florida, and just this spring celebrated their seventh anniversary as a certified community. They created The City Green Plan, which establishes a framework for achieving environmental leadership with the adoption of a City green image, the identification of seven environmental themes, a range of action steps, and a method for annual monitoring. By using this plan, the City is implementing programs and policies for a range of environmental issues and will define sustainability for the community it serves. “Coconut Creek is one of the most unique cities in all of Florida that not only puts green concepts, resiliency and sustainability on its priories but also enacts those ideas in its everyday practice,” says Mayor Joshua Rydell. “It is truly an honor to be awarded the titles and certifications we have and I look forward to the future at leading municipalities in forward thinking concepts”. Coconut Creek, is a well-planned city with a unique environmental consciousness nestled between Miami and Palm Beach. Spotlighted as one of the “Best Cities to Live in America” by Money Magazine, Coconut Creek is home to 60,000 residents and supports a diverse, growing business community. Meet Adam Putnam

More residents and visitors

flock to Florida every day – not only for our world-class golf experiences and beautiful beaches, but also for the lowtax, pro-business climate that allows Florida to be a place where families and businesses can prosper. Thanks to Governor Rick Scott and Florida’s conservative leadership, Florida has cut taxes nearly 100 times over the last seven years, saving Floridians $10 billion. Our state’s next governor must be prepared to build on Florida’s strong economy. However, growing our economy doesn’t happen by raising taxes and creating more government red tape. As the next Governor of Florida, I will continue strengthening our economy by keeping taxes low, slashing regulations, building our workforce and touting all that Florida has to offer, while still protecting what makes Florida great. The next Governor of Florida must also be a proven leader who knows Florida, and no one in this race knows Florida better than me. As a fifth generation Floridian, working on my family’s citrus and cattle farm taught me that business is not just business. It’s personal. I know what ramifications government regulations can have on Florida farms and small businesses. That is why I’m committed to cutting taxes and eliminating burdensome regulations in order to 64

strengthen the economy, create jobs, and put more money in the pockets of hardworking Floridians. I have a track record to prove it. I am the first candidate in the race for Florida Governor to sign the Americans for Tax Reform Pledge, a pledge to Florida taxpayers that I will oppose and veto any and all efforts to increase taxes when I am Governor of Florida. During my time serving in Congress, I championed several tax cuts on American businesses and families. Collectively, these tax cuts saved Americans more than $2.4 trillion. In 2014, as Commissioner of Agriculture, I personally championed cutting taxes businesses pay on electricity consumption, saving Florida businesses $3.1 million each year. I have defended Florida’s farmers against unfair Mexican trade policies that were harming Florida businesses. And I am proud to

have earned the endorsement of the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Floridians deserve a Governor who knows that our strong economy didn’t just happen by accident, it happened by keeping taxes low and cutting red tape. As Governor, I pledge to not take our economy for granted but to continue strengthening the very thing that allows our world-class tourism and businesses to thrive.

TOURISM. It’s a break for everyone. Our more than 66 million annual visitors aren’t just good for the tourism industry, they’re good for everyone who lives here. Tourists pay over $436 million in sales taxes, they pay to improve our infrastructure and helped build many of the public venues companies and residents enjoy. They are a major reason that businesses not directly associated with tourism are thriving, too.

Over the years, tourist numbers have attracted the great dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities that exist here, and have helped create many other businesses who serve the needs of our growing metropolitan area. The bottom-line is that tourism creates jobs, businesses and a better quality-of-life for everyone. Including you.
