After acquiring the Founding Farmer title when I trademarked Turf Life in 2015, I realized the seeds of our success were actually planted way back when I started Golf Central Magazine 1999. And we have grown ever since I had a riveting conversation recently with a publisher who has been through several mergers and acquisitions. Despite the different ways our companies grew, we were able to share a laugh about the business we are in and how we might work together. Now, I don’t generally like using the term “working together” as an expression of what we do when chatting. Instead I prefer to call our discussions, “Growing The Game,” where we are creating awareness and making all things golf turf-rific!!

The demise of print magazines has often been discussed. Interestingly we see it growing. One industry trade journal recently published a survey and found the total audience across magazine media brands, was actually up 5.5% year-over-year. By comparison, web-only audiences experienced double-digit percentage DECLINES to 6.9% in June 2019. So, take THAT web-zines!! I’ve been farming this magazine for a long time and I started out planting seeds. This may sound like a lot of work, but growing awareness was a lot of fun. Now I have advanced to cultivating the magazine, working together, and growing fun alliances. As much as I’ve learned about publishing this piece relates as much to my “farming” as it does to life itself. The Learning Game: When there is ease and simplicity in your life, it’s because earlier you learned a lot. When there is resistance and obstacles in your life, it’s because there’s even more to learn. And learning even more, is pretty much the main reason you’re there. Class dismissed.

7 Bunker Basics to Improve Your Sand Game When you find yourself in a bunker, you may feel a wave of dread wash over you. It’s never an enviable position to be in. But take a deep breath and remember—sand traps are just an inevitable part of the golf game. Even the top players spend their fair share of time in the sand. While we all want to hit that championship-caliber shot out of the greenside bunker for an easy up and down, the majority of golfers should be striving to consistently get the ball somewhere onto the green from the sand. Previously only available to residents, Bella Collina is offering a limited-time membership opportunity to a select number of applicants. Experience the benefits of membership at this legendary 18-hole, Par 72 Nick Faldo course featuring dramatic elevation changes, open fairways and sweeping dunes set against a stunning Tuscan-style setting. It may not seem like it at the time, but hitting quality bunker shots is easier than you think. With continued practice and confidence in your technique, you will start seeing better results and a big improvement in your bunker game! Are you ready? Below are 7 bunker-busting tips to get you out of a sandy situation: • Get your head in the game. Envision where you want the ball to land. Push out any negative thoughts and clear your mind going into the shot. • Stabilize your lower body. By squatting with knees bent, feet wide apart and toes pointed outward you create hip action and a better bunker swing. This also keeps your hands positioned lower to the ground. • Ground your feet. Dig in to ensure that your swing connects underneath the ball. Remember, in greenside bunkers there is no clubface-to-ball contact. The sand will carry the ball onto the green. • Adjust your grip. Maintain consistent pressure but approach with softer arms and a slightly weaker grip. This allows for earlier release, helping the ball go higher and stop faster. • Prepare your swing. Play the ball slightly forward of the center of your stance. Open the clubface—but only slightly. Then, place your weight on the foot closest to the flagstick. • Follow through. Make a full swing, allowing the club to throw some sand. This will get your ball onto the putting surface, and you out of the bunker. • Practice makes perfect. Make sure you consistently practice these difficult shots to get you in the right mindset during the game. If you don’t practice bunker shots regularly, don’t be surprised if your shots don’t consistently land close to the hole. With a little practice, you should expect to get your ball out of greenside bunkers with relative ease. When you’re ready to test out these tips, Bella Collina is the perfect place to develop your sand trap strategy. Masterfully crafted with large and strategically placed bunkers scattered throughout, Bella Collina was designed to constantly challenge golfers of all skill levels. Throughout Bella Collina’s course, you’ll find a total of 79 bunkers of various shapes and sizes. This design feature requires golfers to employ course management skills and strategic planning to navigate the multitude of diabolical hazards placed between the golfer and the green. Remember, your ability to skillfully execute a quality bunker shot will lead to a better score for your entire game. Give these tips a try and we know you’ll be master of the bunker shot in no time!

Simply Serene and Sensational There are many public-access golf courses in the U.S. that have creative names such as Osprey Point (Florida), Threetops at Treetops (Michigan), The Schoolmaster (Alabama), and Covered Bridge (Indiana), but one Georgia golf course is actually named after an amphibian. It’s called The Frog. Located in Villa Rica, Georgia, just off I-20, The Frog (golfthefrog.com; 770-459-4400) is less than a 45-minute drive from the HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport. This golf course is relatively young as it opened in 1998. It was designed by acclaimed golf course architect Tom Fazio. While The Frog – a par-72 layout -- is a young course, it doesn’t have the look of a young golf course and it may well be one of Fazio’s most attractive creations. Frankly, brilliant is an accurate way to describe Fazio’s work at The Frog. Surrounded by thousands of mature, loblolly pine trees, this park12
land-style golf course reminds visitors of what it must be like to visit another well-known Georgia golf course which is dominated by loblolly pines – Augusta National Golf Club. That’s a strong and accurate comparison. The Frog is an 18-hole championship public-access golf course which deserves that ‘championship’ label as it has hosted many notable golf events such as the Georgia Open, CEO Jaguar Tour, and the John Smoltz Celebrity Players Tournament. At The Frog, walking is allowed and encouraged, as the distances from greens to tees are minimal. Not surprisingly, The Frog is one of the 20+ golf courses on the Georgia Golf Trail. “The Frog is a great example of the first-class golf courses that we have on the Georgia Golf Trail,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, The Georgia Golf Trail. “The Frog is a wonderful destination, which will bring you back time and time again.” The Frog’s opening nine holes are
played in the rolling hills. On the back nine, you transition to a nearby valley. In many respects, The Frog has the ‘hills-and-valley’ layout characteristics of two other terrific southeastern U.S. layouts -- the Maggie Valley Club & Resort in Maggie Valley, North Carolina and the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, North Carolina. Today, The Frog features bent grass greens, expansive bunkering, and a handful of strategically placed lakes, ponds, and creeks that add to the intrigue of playing The Frog. The Frog is fun, fair, and, at times, stern, but not overtaxing. At The Frog, there are five sets of tees – Green, White, Blue, Gold, and Black. The Green tees are 5,336 yards and the Black tees measure 7,018 yards. While the course has many tees, general manager/director of golf Buster Inman encourages golfers to play The Frog with a creative mindset. “I think it’s a great idea to play this golf course from a variety of tees,” Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 6
admitted Inman. “For me, I play 15 of the holes from the Gold tees and three holes from the Blue tees -- 10, 12, and 17. That’s the Buster 18. Here, you can create your own golf course.” It’s also worth noting that The Frog has attained status as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. In fact, expect to see wild turkeys and deer grazing in the rough, especially late in the day. It’s so peaceful and quiet at The Frog that you hear crickets chirping, squirrels scampering, and bugs buzzing. The sounds of rustling leaves are also ever-present, especially in the fall. After visiting The Frog, it’s easy to see that Inman’s staff is working diligently to keep this well-manicured course in tip-top shape throughout the year. “When you have 100 acres of grass to cut on a regular basis, sometimes daily, plus bunkers and ponds to monitor, it takes a team effort to keep a golf course in great condition,” added Inman. “This effort starts with a dedicated superintendent. Matt Findley takes on this enormous task and does a great job. It's not just about using the correct herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers, it’s about building a team that takes pride in its work. From the Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 6
The Georgia Golf Trail Presented by mechanic that keeps us going every day to the course setup individual to all the others who cut grass and rake traps, we all have to work together to maintain our golf course in great condition.” At The Frog, you rarely see airplanes overhead and there are no roads in the area where you can hear passing cars. If this course was ever renamed, an appropriate title might be Serenity. As for the origin of this course’s name, Inman says that when the course owners first surveyed the property from the air, it looked like the shape of a frog. As
you would expect, a metal frog statue appears near the first tee -- a great photo opportunity for all visiting golfers. Suffice it to say leaving The Frog will never be easy, but it will be a joy making a return trip. Ribbit! Hoiana Shores #17
Hoiana Shores In Vietnam To Welcomes First Golfers Hoiana Shores Golf Club will welcome its first players starting on 23rd September 2019, to preview the completed, 18-hole design from architect Robert Trent Jones II. The golf course will be the first facility within the new Hoiana Integrated Resort to welcome the public. The 985-hectare, US$4 billion Hoiana complex is the most ambitious resort development ever undertaken in Vietnam. Its first operational phase, which is nearing completion, will eventually integrate more than 1,000 rooms, suites and villas (managed by Rosewood Hotel Group), 4 kilometers of pristine beach, a suite of beachside pools and restaurants, a stand-alone
beach club, an entertainment facility managed by Suncity Group, and a wide array of retail partners. “Hoiana Shores Golf Club will indeed be the first component of this larger development welcoming both domestic and international tourism to our shores,” said Steve Wolstenholme, Group COO at Hoiana. “As a group we intend to showcase the vibrancy and economic potential of not only Hoi An and Central Viet-

nam but this region in general.” “It all starts with the golf,” said Ben Styles, Vice President of Golf for Hoiana. “And so we are particularly excited to announce that Hoiana Shores Golf Club will welcome its first golfers from September 23rd. The Grand Opening event will occur in early 2020, in concert with the unveiling of other Hoiana Phase 1 facilities.” Until that time, the newest (and the most anticipated) golf course in Vietnam — arguably the most active course development market in the world — will be available for limited “preview play”, whereby all proceeds from visiting golfers will be donated to local charities. “It’s our intention to further highlight the ability of golf and tourism to benefit a community,” Styles explained. “Starting 23 September, those proceeds will benefit our local community directly. “Golf occupies a very exciting place in Vietnam right now and I’m so proud and honored to be a small part of the development and evolution of the game here. What we have tried to achieve at Hoiana Shores GC — with help from the design team at Robert Trent Jones II— is something specific and nuanced: a traditional links that proudly builds on local traditions, which, if we are honest, is what all great golf courses do.” Come September, visiting golfers will notice no flags flapping in the ever-present, seaside breeze at Hoiana Shores GC. The pins will instead be adorned with red lanGolf Central • Volume 20, Issue 6
Hoiana Shores #11 terns, the likes of which illuminate Hoi An’s famous Old Town at night. “There’s a reason why it’s called The City of Lanterns,” Styles noted. Hoiana Shores Golf Club began construction since late 2017, under direction of experienced, Hong Kongbased course builder Linksshape, led by Australian, Stuart Stone. “It’s been an amazing experience to be entrusted with this extraordinary piece of land,” Stone said, “almost the dictionary definition of what ‘linksland’ should be.” Hoiana Shores GC has also been developed in full accordance with strict sustainability principles laid out by the U.K.-based GEO Foundation. “In Southeast Asia, there are no other golf developments at this stage of construction that are going through this program,” said GEO Executive Director Sam Thomas. “All others are in the planning or design stage. I think it’s fair to say that, if they continue on this path, Hoiana Shores will be first past the post, the market leader in this regard.” While the greens at Hoiana Shores are grassed with Tif-Eagle Bermuda, all the fairways and tees at feature the Zeon Zoysia, a relatively new, droughttolerant turfgrass strain specially developed to provide firm, fast conditions in equatorial regions like this one. This choice was both sustainable and strategic: Many “tropical links” are built entirely on sand; several more feature the flamboyant contour associated with links golf — but few if any have delivered the requisite bounce and roll that links design requires. Zeon zoysia will, which is something of a game-changer. “It’s an upright grower where you can cut back on water and get it right — firm Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 6
and fast,” explained Rob Weiks, Golf Course Superintendent at Hoiana Shores GC. “It’s less grainy than bermuda, way less than the paspalum. It frankly freed up the architects and shapers to manufacture some wonderful shapes and contours — a lot of created architecture that could not be rushed. It is a great luxury to pile the sand up, shape it, then let the wind shape it again. It’s one reason the landforms out here are so compelling.” “Let me give you and example of how that process worked, because it’s pretty unique and required real patience,” Stone added. “On holes 16 and 17, for example, where the wind is coming right off the sea, our fine shapers carved out the shapes, and then we let Mother Nature further shape it. Then the team came back, refined it and finalized it. Ultimately, we created truly
windswept areas there that were quite different from the original shapes.” Six of the 18 holes at Hoiana Shores come into direct contact with the beach. According to Styles, this illustrates both Hoiana’s vision and ambition. “It speaks volumes about our ownership group — to allow so much interaction with the shoreline. That’s a rarity. The beachfront could have been otherwise developed,” he said. “But this decision will ultimately pay off, as this part of the course is uniquely unforgettable… There is nothing quite like playing those holes — playing shots from the beach itself! It is proof you are playing a proper links. There aren’t many courses in Asia that serve up that type of experience.” Golfers looking to make a booking in this period may contact Hoiana Shores GC at reservations@hoianashores.com.

“Nothing says more about the exclusivity of a golf course community than its residents. At Boca Grove Plantation, we’re especially proud that our touring professional, Gary Player, has chosen our community for his first American home.” This statement is the lead-in to an advertisement for Boca Grove Golf & Tennis Club in May 1984. This was during the time that Boca Grove hosted the Quadel, the original PGA Seniors Classic. The event was held at the club during development in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Arnold Palmer won the Quadel the first two years, with the final year appropriately dominated by Player. Through the years Boca Grove has become a true hidden gem in the heart of Boca Raton. With just 444 front doors, the members pride themselves on their friendly neighborhood vibe. Although the crown jewel of the property continues to be its Karl Litten designed golf course, their tennis program is second to none with high ranking tennis pros such as Kevin Anderson, Tennys Sandgren, the Bryan Brothers and Martina Navratilova playing on the imported Italian red clay stadium court just this season. A lot has happened in the past couple of years, with one more big thing in the works, that has created a renaissance at Boca Grove. After the course redesign by Jim Fazio in 2011, the clubhouse was renovated in 2017. 2018 brought a new Tennis Center with pickleball courts, an exciting Sports Bar, new guardhouses and signage. That summer, the club completed a bunker program adding to the beauty and challenge of course. We even had the return of Gary Player to our hallowed halls, he came to play in May 2019. Lunch was spent sharing stories of the past and visions of the future. In April 2020 the club will break ground on a brand new, state-of-the-art sports and wellness center complete with second story fitness center with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the resort style pool, children’s splash pad and play areas as well as a full service dining facility for fast, fresh and healthy options. Rumor has it Gary Player and original General Manager Jim Applegate will be on hand for a special member event to commemorate this latest chapter in the history of this prestigious, members-only golf and tennis club where understated elegance in an intimate setting is the key to what makes Boca Grove the epitome of superior living. The time is now! Be part of the renaissance. Escape everyday every day.

Pinehurst No. 4 Reaches National Stage In 2017, Pinehurst hired world-renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse to build a 789-yard short course called, The Cradle. After this fun and inviting course opened to critical acclaim, the resort’s leadership brought Hanse back
to reimagine the property’s course No. 4. Hanse set out to revive its original sandy, scrubby and rugged aesthetic. Hanse, designer of the 2016 Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janerio, envisioned No. 4 as a “companion course” to its famed sibling, No. 2. Recognizing the seamless connection, the United

States Golf Association named the two courses hosts of the 2019 U.S. Amateur. Hanse knew it, now the golf world is taking notice. Although No. 4 will be a natural counterpart to No. 2, it will not be a duplicate. In fact, Hanse believes No. 4 features the most interesting topography on the entire property. “It is a companion in the landscape, but it is not a tribute in the features. The greens are different, the approaches are different and we wanted to take

advantage of the landforms, which are much more dramatic than those on No. 2,” says Hanse. Hanse equated re-designing No. 4 as a chance to “play in the sand” as nothing in golf compares to the Sandhills region of North Carolina and its underlying soil. His team restored No. 4 back to its original landforms by recreating the hole corridors and reconnecting the elevations and natural features. With a gleaming lake as the centerpiece and natural ridgelines defining corridors, golfers are now treated to a brazen blend of sand, native wire grasses and wider fairways. Golfers of all skill levels will surely appreciate Pinehurst’s

PGA Tour Players And Thousands Of Others Pitch In To Assist Hurricane Dorian Survivors Professional golfers and thousands of people from around the world are coming to the aid of those affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, helping The Abaco Club on Winding Bay’s relief fund to top the $1.4 million mark. Two of those players, Darren Clarke and Thomas Aiken, have homes at the club, and both have helped spearhead the effort with pleas to assist the Bahamians that are their neighbors and friends. “The Abaco Club on Winding Bay is my home,” said PGA Tour Champions player Clarke, who was the 2011 Open Champion and 2016 European Ryder Cup Captain. “To see all this devastation in Marsh Harbour, the northern Cays and Grand Bahama is truly heartbreaking. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world and will be again, but we need help right now for the people still there. We need water, fuel and nonperishable foods. Please help, no matter how big or how small it will make a difference. Thank you.” Aiken, a South African who is playing on the European Tour this year echoed Clarke’s sentiments. “Please help these amazing people that I have gotten to know so well over the last decade while we have lived in Abaco and had the honor of calling this place our home. #Abacostrong -- definitely the strongest people I know! For those of you that have had the pleasure of visiting Abaco, you already know that not only is it the 26
beauty of Abaco that captures you, it’s the beauty of the people that capture your heart. So please, give with your heart to heal the wounded souls of this beautiful paradise.” Rafa Campos, who won the Web.com Tour (now the Korn Ferry Tour) 2019 Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at The Abaco Club, has pledged to contribute $100 for each birdie he makes this week when he tees it up in his first PGA Tour event, The Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. On his Instagram page, Campos said: “Abaco, Bahamas is a very special place since @theabacoclub was where I won my first professional golf tournament this past January 23, 2019 while playing the @kornferrytour 2018-2019 season. This W helped me accomplish my biggest professional goal -- be a @pgatour Member. It’s devastating to see our island brothers go through the destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian.” Campos wrote that he will challenge other PGA Tour players to follow his lead and contribute to the effort via a relief fund created by the club. ‘We’re very grateful to Darren, Thomas and Rafa for highlighting the urgency of the situation being faced by the people of Great Abaco,” said Southworth Development Founder and CEO David Southworth. “We were very proud to have Darren and Thomas as members and residents at the club, and to have Rafa as our 2019 champion. We’re equally proud of their humanitarianism.
We thank them all, and want to wish Rafa very good luck in his first PGA Tour event. We hope he birdies every hole.” As of today, the fund created by the club has raised over $1.4 million for the relief effort, not including another $1 million pledged in matching funds by Joe Deitch, chairman of Southworth Development, an affiliate of which owns The Abaco Club. Members of The Abaco Club and other Southworth clubs and communities have contributed over $900,000 to date. “Money alone will never restore our Abaco neighbors’ lives to what they once were,” said Deitch. “But peoples’ contributions can certainly play a role in helping them piece their lives back together. These people are our family, and we’re committed to doing everything we can to help them in their time of urgent need.” People wishing to contribute to the Abaco relief effort can do so at its GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme. com/f/abacodorianrelief. Contributions will be distributed by the AbacoWinding Bay Relief Fund, a charitable organization created expressly for this effort with 501(c)3 status applied for and pending. All funds received from this GoFundMe campaign will be used to provide assistance specifically to the people of Abaco in the form of food, shelter, medical aid and supplies, and assistance in the island’s clean-up and rebuilding efforts. Where Golfers Gather for Great Golf
Golfers dream about playing Pebble Beach, hope to play St. Andrews, and pray for a tee time at Augusta National. Those dreams, hopes, and prayers may never come true, but every golfer who craves a memorable golf getaway must travel to northern Michigan to play Boyne Golf. Located 90 minutes north of Traverse City, Boyne Golf is now one of America’s most appealing golf destinations – especially in the late spring, summer, and early fall.
30
Boyne Golf is best described with seven words: “ten golf courses, three resorts, one destination.” Boyne Golf may well be the standard by which all U.S. golf resorts are now measured. When you consider the key components of any stay-and-play golf getaway, Boyne Golf checks all the boxes: firstclass accommodations, terrific weather, delicious food, genuine hospitality, and a cluster of championship golf courses. All ten golf courses at Boyne are well designed and maintained with meticulous attention to detail. Another bonus to the Boyne Golf experience is the daylight. At Boyne, you can play at least 54 holes on many summer days. Boyne Golf has three destinations: Bay Harbor Golf Club, Boyne Highlands, and Boyne Mountain. Each locale is strong enough to stand on its own as a desirable golf destination, but when they are
bundled together, Boyne Golf rises like cream to the top of anybody’s wish list. The Bay Harbor Golf Club features 45-holes of golf -- three nine-hole golf courses (Links, Quarry, and Preserve) and the scenic 18-hole Crooked Tree Golf Club. The Bay Harbor Golf Club is set along a attention-getting stretch of Lake Michigan. At Bay Harbor, there are many views of Lake Michigan, but the best lakeside views are from the tee of the par-three 8th hole of the Quarry and along the fairway of the par-five 7th hole of the Links. When you play golf at Bay Harbor, you must stay at the Inn at Bay Harbor, one of America’s most iconic hotels. With each of the hotel’s 111 rooms, you get unobstructed views of Little Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan. This property also has 22 modern lakeside cottages. The specifics on Boyne High-

lands are impressive – four 18-hole golf courses. Those four courses are The Heather, Arthur Hills, Donald Ross Memorial, and The Moor. The Heather opened in 1966 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The Heather was named the 2019 National Golf Course Operators Association’s Course of the Year. The two biggest memories from the Arthur Hills Course are the intentional alignment of the white pine trees that line the 5th fairway which is why the 5th should be called ‘White Pine Boulevard.’ At the 10th, because of the configuration of the white pine trees that surround the putting surface, there’s a stadium-like feel as you approach the raised green of this short par four. Donald Ross Memorial is a creative collection of some of Ross’s finest holes from his classic golf course designs. In all, the 18 holes are replications from 14 of Ross’ courses. Some of the more well-known holes at Ross Memorial are the 6th hole at Seminole Golf Club (the 1st at Ross Memorial), the 14th at Scotland’s Royal Dornoch Golf Club (the 10th at Ross Memorial), and the 18th at Inverness Club (the 7th at Ross Memorial). Do you want to replicate Bob Tway’s bunker shot when he holed out from a greenside bunker on the 18th at Inverness to beat Greg Norman to win the 1986 PGA? You can at Ross Memorial. In all, the 14 courses used at Ross Memorial have hosted 14 U.S. Opens, 11 PGAs, eight U.S. Ama-

teurs, and five Ryder Cups. Members at Boyne Highlands often rate The Moor as their favorite. Twists and turns are a common theme at The Moor, especially the front nine, which has four left-to-right doglegs. Accommodations at Boyne Highlands range from private cottages to rooms inside the lodge. The cottages are have that ‘home sweet home’ feeling. Obviously, Boyne Highlands is an ideal location for a golf buddy trip.
Boyne Mountain features two 18-hole courses -- The Monument and Alpine -- along with the charming Mountain Grand Lodge & Spa, a family friendly destination. The Alpine course is affectionately referred to as a place where a good walk is made better. You get that feeling even if you use a golf cart. The mountain setting and the views of Deer Lake will bring you back to Alpine. Golf historians always enjoy playing The Monument course. This course was designed by borrowing the design tendencies from great golf course architects like Donald Ross, Dr. Alister Mackenzie, Pete Dye, and Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The course also pays tribute to some of America’s most accomplished and memorable golfers. When at Boyne Mountain, look for Jerri Lee Richards, Boyne Mountain’s unofficial Vice President of Fun. Richards is Boyne Golf’s most energetic cart girl and most passionate advocate of Boyne Mountain. And, she has been for nearly 30 years. “My career has been such a joy,” admitted Richards. “I’m happy to serve the golfers.” Again, you don’t have to dream, hope, or pray about visiting Boyne Golf, you just have choose dates, reserve tee times, and go play. 31

A Trend Setter for Social Justice Willie Black and John Everhart at Rogers Park in 1952
While civil rights issues and racial matters were major topics of discussion in the 1960s in the U.S., one Florida golf course had already made tremendous strides of its own in the areas of racial segregation and social justice – before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. The roots of progress in civil rights in Florida can be specifically traced to, of all places, the Rogers Park Golf Course in Tampa. The land in Tampa where the Rogers Park Golf Course (7911 North Willie Black Drive, Tampa, Florida; 813-3561670) was built was once the private property of African-American businessman/philanthropist Garfield Devoe Rogers. Prior to the golf course being built, this property had been used for years by the local African-American community in Tampa for picnics, baseball games, and general recreation activities -- often after church on Sundays. Rogers eventually donated the land to the City of Tampa for a park and golf course. The land was officially named Rogers Park in 1951. Later in 1951, Tampa Mayor Curtis Hixon agreed to allow a local group of local African-American caddies, who were based at the Palma Ceia Country Club, to build a nine-hole golf course at Rogers Park. This golf course construction project was led by Willie Black of Albany, Georgia, who had experience building golf courses in Georgia. The crew working on this project didn’t have access to modern machinery so it 34
was a labor-intensive effort – removing trees and shaping the land by hand. In 1952, the project was completed and the nine-hole course was opened for play. Black was appointed as the club’s first head golf professional. By 1961, the golf course was expanded to 18 holes. In 1963, the golf course was desegregated and its doors were open to everybody “interested in challenging Old Man Par.” “We have the finest race relations here of any municipal course in the United States” stated Black, back in 1966. Over the years, the course has been refurbished and revamped with public funds. Back in 1976, golf course designer Ron Garl was hired to oversee a $400,000 renovation project. In 2000, the Tampa Sports Authority oversaw a $4 million renovation. In 2001, a new maintenance compound was completed, followed by a new clubhouse in 2002. And, in November 2014, the original Rogers Park Golf Course site became the fourth golf course in Florida to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Not surprisingly, the Rogers Park Golf Course is one of the 53 golf courses in Florida that is part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail. Today, the 18-hole Rogers Park Golf Course -- a par of 71 layout -- is under the leadership of Director of Golf T.J. Heidel, whose personal philosophy on golf is in sync with the
mission of this golf course. According to Heidel, he believes in teaching the game of golf to people of all ages as you are never too young or too old to play golf. And, his teaching philosophy is to “keep it simple.” With five sets of tees, Rogers Park plays from 5,000 to 6,800 yards. Located only 20 minutes from downtown Tampa, the 160-acre golf course is surrounded on three sides by the Hillsborough River. Not surprisingly, water hazards are present on eight of the 18 holes. As you would expect, Rogers Park GC is home to the First Tee of Tampa Bay, which began in 1991 as Urban Junior Golf at Rogers Park Golf Course. In addition to the driving range, the Rogers Park GC features a three-hole short game practice area -- an ideal place to introduce new players to golf. If you book a tee time through this course’s website (http://www. rogersparkgolf.net/welcome), you can also secure tee times at two other public golf courses in Tampa -- Rocky Point GC and Babe Zaharias GC -- both of which are also members of the Florida Historic Golf Trail.

As home to the Audubon Golf Trail, Louisiana is more than great food, festivals, and music – it’s great golf too.” Golf addicts can get their fix in many places, but Louisiana offers so much more than the average golf destination. Off the course attractions include riverboat casinos and exciting racetracks, the Mighty Mississippi and the French Quarter, live music venues and Culinary Trails, world-class saltwater and freshwater fishing, historic plantations and Mardi Gras museums. And just like so many of the outdoor activities, Louisiana golf courses are designed to show off the intrinsic natural beauty of the state while offering a variety of challenging and interesting experiences, all at a great value. The vast variety of lodging options, from plantation homes and B&Bs to historic hotels and luxurious casino resorts, enable golf travelers to experience Louisiana like no other. And the six golf resorts on the Audubon Golf Trail provide the best of both worlds. Louisiana’s Audubon Golf Trail members have undergone a rigorous screening process to ensure a compilation of 18 first class courses with high standards of customer service and top-quality maintenance. Since the inception of The RSM Classic in 2010, RSM and the Davis Love Foundation have generated more than $13 million for charities that support education and organizations that support children and families in need. Our winemaking team has passionately crafted this debut vintage with these virtues in mind. The Spirited Flavor of Bourbon Oak Aging Heavily charred Bourbon oak barrels impart nuanced layers of caramel, vanilla and toasty oak to the wine’s naturally intense dark berry character. The result is a robust, deliciously complex and silky smooth Lodi Zinfandel. Wine Description: Intense and full-bodied with red fruit, blackberry and spice. Resort Launches Collection of Luxury Villas for an Indulgent Tuscan Holiday in Italy’s Maremma Region The Argentario Golf Resort & Spa, set in the Monte Argentario nature reserve, has launched a collection of luxury villas on the property that are available to rent for an indulgent holiday in the unspoiled region of the Maremma in south west Tuscany. Whilst the new properties offer guests privacy and independence, all villa guests have open access to the nearby design hotel, a majestic giant dragonfly-shaped property just 200 metres away, and all of its state-of-the-art facilities as well as all the activities on offer at the Resort for the entire length of their stay. The spacious open-plan villas feature achingly-stylish surroundings thanks to elegant furnishings and unique design items curated by Milan-based interior designer, Andrea Fogli, whilst expansive private decked terraces, perfect for sundowners and al fresco dining, boast sweeping views over the Resort’s Two Hills Lodge villas feature the ‘Lagoon Bay’ design concept and comprise
of five bedrooms, four bathrooms, striking double-height living rooms, home theatres with 3D televisions whilst their huge outdoor spaces enjoy panoramic views over the Argentario Polo Club, golf course and Orbetello Lagoon. Both the Maremma Cottages, one named ‘Olive Trees’ and the other ‘Horse Track’ to reflect their different interior designs, comprise an openplan living space, three bedrooms and two bathrooms and a wooden terrace with outdoor hot tub. The fifth property, known as Locker Cottage, is a haven of privacy and tranquillity. Set amongst ancient olive trees, this three-bedroomed independent villa reflects the style of an old Tuscan country house but with glamorous and eclectic touches such as the huge 200 m² terrace and the extra large Turkish bath. When tired of cooking, guests can enjoy gourmet meals created by local chef Emiliano Lombardelli in the stylish Dama Dama Restaurant, named after the fallow deer that occasionally
roam around the resort. The cuisine is based on the flavours and colours of the local land with dishes prepared using produce from small, carefully-selected local farms and, at certain times of the year, some that come directly from the hotel’s vegetable garden and orchard. For a less formal dining experience, the Club House Restaurant, overlooking the 18th green of the golf course, serves healthy, authentic Tuscan dishes. For those looking to fully relax and unwind, Argentario’s extensive Espace Wellness Centre and MediSPA is the ideal retreat. This 2,700 m² area includes a fitness centre with Technogym equipment, bio-sauna with chromotherapy, Kneipp circuit, heated indoor swimming pool with saline water, six massage cabins and tanning showers plus numerous other services. Anytime access to the par 71, 6,218 metre golf course that weaves in and out of cork-oak woods, natural Mediterranean vegetation and an ancient olive grove, provides the opportunity for golfers to enjoy some challenging Argentario Golf Course

Horse riding and fishing trips can easily be arranged by the hotel as well as outings to the nearby sandy beaches of the famous Silver Coast and its crystal-clear waters. Whether it’s for a summer vacation by the sea under the Tuscan sun or for a relaxing autumn or winter break when the weather is temperate and sunny, the villas are an ideal destination for families and groups of friends who love the Tuscan way of life and its gastronomy, enjoy indulging in a spa day, take pleasure in nature and are keen on sporting activities. Close to Argentario, there are hilltop villages, charming seaside ports, vineyards and olive groves to explore whilst the nearby cities of Rome, Pisa and Sienna are all within easy distance – by car or train - for those who prefer art and culture. And the Winner Is – GOLF
Both teams came prepared to play hard at the 2019 Solheim Cup
Having missed one of the great Open Championships at Royal Portrush this summer I was eager to get back to the UK for some quality competition this fall and two weeks in I couldn’t have scripted a better two events – The Walker Cup and the incredible Solheim Cup. While the two events couldn’t have been more different in many ways – men versus women, amateur versus professional, small intimate crowds versus the largest crowds ever for the Solheim – both shared more than just the Team aspect – not a dollar changed hands to the participants and it enhanced rather than diminished the excitement. Both, too, were wonderful events for the spectators, again in different but equally pleasing ways and did much for the future of both the men and women’s amateur games. First up was The Walker Cup, arguably one of the best events in the celebration of all that is good in golf. This biannual competition between amateurs from the United States against a team from Great Britain and Ireland has been formally held since 1922. However, its start dates back to 1921 when the United States brought a team to informally compete against an English team at Royal Liverpool, known as the spiritual “home of amateur golf.” 50
So it was fitting that this year’s Walker Cup returned to its roots at Royal Liverpool for a week of quality competition, but more importantly quality camaraderie. It has become my favorite golf event to attend, as much for the off course action as the shot making. The crowds this year were excellent for Walker Cup under superb conditions on the weekend were around 5,500 on the Saturday and slightly larger on the Sunday. But what makes the Walker Cup unique is that due to the intimate crowd size the spectators are allowed to follow the matches down the fairways and stand close in to the greens as they progress. The other great tradition is that clubs that have (or will) host a Walker Cup send a few members along as ambassadors. There are dinners, cocktail parties and golf outings where old and new friendships are solidified and formed over a common passion – amateur golf. Bobby Jones, perhaps the greatest amateur of all time and certainly in the modern era competed in five Walker Cups and the inaugural event in 1921, as playing captain in two of them and only lost once in 10 matches. Royal Liverpool, or Hoylake as it is more often called, looks benign, as it is relatively flat on first glance. However, and I may be a tad biased here as I am a
member, it is truly one of the great tests of golf once you are out challenging the layout. The bunker placement is genius to capture shots not perfectly placed, the juicy rough bordering the somewhat narrow fairways has an appetite for wayward balls and the diabolical interior out-of-bounds on No 1 and No. 16 has ruined many a round. In a stiff breeze it’s as challenging as any championship links, as the lads found out early in the week when the wind blew 35 mph with even stiffer gusts, but also like any links layout it becomes a bit defenseless to the Suzann Pettersen holed the final putt to insure Europe winning back the Solheim Cup

modern game in calm conditions as in Sunday’s final round. The GB & I team got off to a fast start in Saturday’s opening session finishing a point ahead, but the American team members, under Captain Nathaniel Crosby came off the first tee in all of Sunday’s matches like triple crown winners out of the start gate winning 8 of 10 matches to retain the trophy with a final score of 15.5 to 10.5. Regardless of the final score no one in attendance left feeling they had witnessed anything but the best the great game has to offer. The only downside to The Walker Cup is that the actual competition is only two days, it feels like its over as soon as it starts and leaves you wanting more. This year’s event was also sadly not televised for the first time in the modern era and only daily highlights were shown, which really didn’t give the sense of just how special this event is to the average golf public. The good news is the next Walker Cup is scheduled for May 2021 (out of hurricane season) at venerable Seminole Golf Club, in Juno Beach, FL. The USGA guarantees the event will be televised and hopefully the R & A will work out the broadcast issues in time for the September 2023 playing at the storied Old Course, St. Andrews. Better yet, start making plans now to attend in person. As anyone that made the journey to Scotland to attend this year’s Solheim

Supporters of Harry Hall followed him step for step proudly carrying the Cornish flag like a battlefield standard. Cup will tell you, Scotland is truly “The Home of Golf.” And the European Team may lobby to have it also be the permanent home of the Solheim Cup when played on this side of the Pond as they are 3-0 on Scottish soil (1992 Dalmahoy 11.5 – 6.5, 2000 Loch Lomond 14.5 – 11.5, 2019 Gleneagles 14.5 – 13.5). As intimate as the crowds were at Hoylake, the opposite was true at Gleneagles. As witnessed in the successful 2014 Ryder Cup, The PGA Centenary Course is a perfect viewing layout offering stunning views of the Perthshire glens and across the action on the holes themselves. Record crowds approaching 100,000 were on hand to see what turned out to be one of the most thrilling, heart pounding decisions in any team competition. It came down to the last putt, in the last match, on the final 18th green. Before start of play an announcer on Solheim Cup Radio had commented that it would be an amazing and appropriate finish if Suzann Pettersen, this year a captain’s pick, holed the winning putt to regain the trophy. What a prophecy as indeed, Pettersen, a bit of the European women’s Ian Poulter in team events, nailed her 8 footer to cement a European victory. With a half hour to go it looked for all the world that the US had the third consecutive win for Captain Julie Inkster in the bag, in reality it was really Europe’s to lose. They had lead the closing two team matches 1 up coming into eighteen on Friday only to half those matches, several others held large leads on Saturday only to see a reversal or half occur and at one stage on Sunday the board was decidedly blue in seven matches 51
Hard to concentrate on the demanding 14th tee shot with spectacular views across the estuary to Wales before the US mounted a stirring come back that just fell short. In fact on Saturday with definitively Scottish – nae wind, nae rain, nae golf weather – that should have favored the Euros, the Americans put in a gutsy performance to start Sunday all square. Not all those 100K attendees were European; it was wonderful to see 100s if not 1000s of American women taking to the links of Scotland like ducks to water. From all corners of the country East Lothian, Fife, The Highlands and Ayrshire the courses were full and no women’s hire clubs were to be had. And according to many club managers I spoke with the visiting women also took to the 19th holes as seasoned professionals sampling the local whisky, gins and brews in record quantities as well. As much fun as the hospitality was for the adults enjoying the action, the two events were wonderful for encouraging the future of the game in abundant youth attendance. At the Solheim I was reunited with Rosie Boyce and her supportive dad, John. I featured them in a piece last year from the Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham. Rosie (now 14), I am pleased to say, if anything, is even MORE mad keen on her golf and is becoming quite an accomplished competitive player as well. Sadly, she had to leave the Solheim on the Friday for a match on Saturday that she handily won 8 and 6. But not before she was able to proudly borrow her golf hero, Charlie Hull, caddie’s bib for a photo. At the Walker Cup 52
The 18th at Gleneagles saw matches finish there and even the winning event putt! and even the Solheim Cup the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed and pre/post on course competition the players are still interactive with the fans. As the men’s tournaments become more corporate in nature with millions on the line both in terms of purses and sponsorship fees, its great to know that there are still events that are affordable, accessible and best of all featuring a standard of golf rival to none. Make it a golf goal this year to attend one.

book, “GOLFERS 911: Emergency Medical Guide.” GOLFERS 911 is written by successful businessman and real estate executive, Mason Delafield of Delray Beach, FL and edited by Ronald Brown, MD, FACOG practicing cardiologist at Carolina Health Span Institute in Charlotte, NC. Both men, who are avid senior golfers, saw a need to publish GOLFERS 911 to educate and inform golfers about what to do in a medical emergency on the golf course. “When we’re on a golf course, we are often in a remote environment confronting a variety of hazards every time we play- bunkers, water, alligators, snakes, etc.” explained Delafield. “Selfishly, GOLFERS 911 is a guidebook intended to give me – and other golfers – a better chance for survival in a medical emergency.” With a red laminated cover
and conveniently tabbed sections, GOLFERS 911 is a 4”x 6”, 64 page guide that fits easily into your golf bag. Individual chapters cover a variety of emergency situations such as fainting, cardiac arrest, choking, seizures, lacerations, head injuries, insect bites and more. Professional medical illustrations displayed throughout
According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, 95% of cardiac arrests that happen on the golf course are fatal. Without administering CPR or using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), 92% die before making it to the hospital. GOLFERS 911 makes the content easy to understand and to apply. “GOLFERS 911 provides valuable medical information and actions with which most of us are unfamiliar, “ Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 6
said Delafield. “Carrying GOLFERS 911 in your bag and being familiar with the contents can help golfers be proactive and jump into action before first responders arrive. It could even save a life!” Golf courses are the 5th most common place for cardiac arrest. Ninety-six percent of those victims are male - average age 66. According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, 95% of cardiac arrests that happen on the course are fatal. Without administering CPR, 92% die before making it to the hospital. GOLFERS 911 provides and illustrates the latest and most essential emergency medical techniques such as HandsOnly CPR. HandsOnly CPR takes less than a minute to learn. You don’t need to be certified and mouthto-mouth is no longer required. Knowing this technique alone can save lives both on and off the course. “GOLFERS 911 is something of real value to golfers – and these days that not easy to find!” said George Peper, Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 6
Editor, LINKS Magazine and heart attack survivor. “Everyone one of us should have a copy of this guide in our bag.” GOLFERS 911 can be purchased individually for $14.95 and can be customized and ordered in quantity. GOLFERS 911 makes a unique and
thoughtful member appreciation gift for clubs, practical tee gift for tournaments and an eye-catching point of purchase item in any pro shop or retail store. SunnilandSUPERSpotlight: Dick Gray I’ve been in the turf business
since 1967 when I left Purdue University Graduate School before getting my master’s degree. Forty years later, I received it from Texas Tech (I’m a slow learner). With that, a bachelor’s degree in botany from Wabash College and 52 years of experience. Though, that still doesn’t seem like enough knowledge for what we, as superintendents, are required to coach and produce on a daily basis. I’ve threaded two fertilizer companies, a microbial company and 14 golf courses onto this run and the sales experience from those three businesses has probably contributed as much, and possibly more, to my knowledge base than the 14 golf courses. Here’s how: sales is really problem solving and when you call on as many experts in the field as a salesperson does, you learn an awful lot about problem solving. Not all superintendents solve problems identically. Not all superintendents think alike agronomi-
Dick Gray cally, not all think alike philosophically. And all of this information learned from a client base of superintendents can be transformed into knowledge. For that reason, I feel confident about my choice of using Sunniland as my
source of both product and information. I’ve never had a question about product quality, the agronomic information is invaluable, the price is always competitive and the service is as timely as an atomic clock.

Golf Courses Are Aflutter For Monarchs
to visit and interact with the space, as well as the opportunity to increase the local community’s understanding of how golf courses are maintained. The scope of these habitat improvements is confirming Audubon International’s initial vision, as well as those of the supporters providing multiple contributions and grants such as the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the USGA.
Audubon International’s Monarchs in the Rough program, designed to increase butterfly habitat on golf courses, is taking flight. As of October 2019, Monarchs In The Rough (monarchsintherough.org) has grown to 520 courses across 45 U.S. States, Puerto Rico, six Canadian Provinces, and two Mexican States. With each participating course planting at least 1 acre for the migratory species, more than a square mile (640 acres) has been established as new habitat. This truly continental effort is a network of reserves working toward the same goal: recovering North America’s favorite insect – the Monarch butterfly.
More courses still needed!
Golf course management teams join in for habitat conservation Golf course superintendents, general managers, owners, management companies, builders and others are really taking this initiative under their wing. A recent Audubon International survey demonstrates that member courses have already planted an additional 160 acres, above and beyond those required for program sign-up, on their own initiative. This is a wonderful development because golf course management is clearly being inspired to increase plantings once their employees became comfortable with installing and maintaining the native plantings. The Monarchs In The Rough project plantings also serve as demonstration sites, which encourage golfers and other property visitors to change their practices at home. The influence of Monarchs In The 62
Rough is already reaching beyond the boundaries of golf courses and is resulting in broader community involvement to save butterflies. In addition to the new habitat for butterflies, these plots provide diverse natural areas that improve water quality, reduce inputs, build soil health, bolster beneficial insects that control turf pests, provide cover for birds, and otherwise add to the aesthetics of golf properties. Additionally, there are also countless numbers of outreach and education opportunities available such as visits by Master Naturalist groups, birders and butterfly watchers, collegiate course field trips, guest lectures
While these early results are fantastic – now is not the time to let up! More habitat is still needed and Monarchs in the Rough has funding for milkweed seed and educational signs for an additional 150 golf courses over the next year, particularly in the 28 priority U.S. States that are west of Mississippi River plus Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Anuvia Plant Nutrients to Reopen Mosaic Plant City Facility as Second Florida Location
Walt Precourt, Mosaic Senior Vice President, Strategy and Growth
Anuvia Plant Nutrients has entered into a long-term strategic relationship with The Mosaic Company to help meet the increased demand for its biobased sustainable and environmentally friendly plant nutrients. The companies have signed a long-term lease arrangement which provides significant benefits to both parties and the surrounding community. Anuvia will utilize a portion of Mosaic’s shuttered Plant City phosphate production facility and repurpose existing infrastructure to increase its production capacity to up to 1.2 million tons. Currently, Anuvia’s Zellwood facility produces 80,000 tons annually. In addition, as production increases, the company plans to add approximately 135 new employees with an average salary of $70,000. It will be the Zellwood-based company’s second Florida location and is expected to be operational by second quarter 2020. This expansion is in response to 64
increased demand for Anuvia’s biobased sustainable and environmentally friendly plant nutrients. “In the three years since the Zellwood plant went online, the market has been receptive to our products and its unique benefits,” says Anuvia Plant Nutrients CEO Amy Yoder. “And now in response to the increased demand, we are increasing our production capacity. It is gratifying that farmers are realizing the performance and environmental benefits Anuvia products bring to crop production.” “Mosaic has been looking to partner with successful, innovative companies and this arrangement which includes an equity position is an excellent fit for us,” says Walt Precourt, Mosaic Senior Vice President, Strategy and Growth. “Both companies are committed to operating safely and sustainably while
providing customers with high quality crop nutrient solutions. We look forward to exploring opportunities to further expand our relationship.” In agriculture, Anuvia products stand out because of their ability to help farmers increase productivity as well as the far-reaching environmental benefits which include improving soil quality, reducing nutrient loss and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. get the right genes in the right seed varieties, and these genetic bundles can provide extraordinary benefits to turf managers,” says Bruce Jump, turf seed product manager for WinField United Professional Products. “Spring green-up, brown patch and dollar spot resistance, traffic tolerance and drought tolerance are just a few of the attributes that provide a high return on investment and reduce turfgrass inputs. The Turf Tech Tool provides turf managers access to these benefits by allowing them to select the best turf seed based on data and individual and regional needs.”

The Turf Tech Tool filters nearly 20
million data points and about 1,500 seed varieties from the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP). After users input and rank desired turfgrass seed attributes, the algorithm searches all species, all years, all attributes and all state trials to find top-performing turfgrass varieties for one attribute 66
